2.0 Current Freight Rail System and Services in Florida
Investment Element of the 2010 Florida Rail System Plan 2.0 Current Freight Rail System and Services in Florida 2.1 Overview The Florida rail system is comprised of 2,786 miles of mainline track, which are owned by 15 operating line-haul railroads and terminal or switching companies, as well as 81 miles owned by the State of Florida. Florida’s rail system includes 2 Class I Railroads (CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Corporation), 1 Class II (Florida East Coast Railway), 11 Class III (Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway AN Railway, Bay Line Railroad, First Coast Railroad, Florida West Coast Railroad, Florida Central Railroad, Florida Midland Railroad, Florida Northern Railroad, Georgia and Florida Railway, Seminole Gulf Railway, and South Central Florida Express) and 1 railroad specializing in switching and terminals (Talleyrand Terminal).9 The largest operator in the State is CSX Transportation, which owns more than 53 percent of the statewide track mileage. In 2008, Florida’s railroads carried nearly 1.6 million carloads – 19 percent less than in 2006 – and approximately 83 million tons of freight, representing a 25 million ton (23 percent) decrease from 2006.10 During that year, railroads handled freight equivalent to roughly 5.0 million heavy trucks.11 Nonetheless, railroads continue to support thousands of jobs throughout the State and assist Florida’s industries to remain competitive with international and domestic markets for fertilizer, construction rock, consumer goods, paper products, processed 9 U.S. Class I Railroads are line-haul freight railroads with 2007 operating revenue in excess of $359.6 million (2006 operating revenues exceeding $346.7 million). -

B.C.D. 00-35 EMPLOYER STATUS DETERMINATION SEP 1 4 2000 Cape Cod Central Railroad, Inc. (CCCR) This is a determination of the Railroad Retirement Board concerning the status of the Cape Cod Central Railroad, Inc. (CCCR) as an employer under the Railroad Retirement Act (45 U.S.C. §231 el sea.) (RRA) and the Railroad Unemployment Insurance Act (45 U.S.C. §351 el sea-) (RUIA). Mr. John Kennedy, President of CCCR, provided information regarding the railroad. CCCR runs excursion trains on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The train operates solely within Massachusetts and uses 23 miles of track which begins in Hyannis and ends in Bourne. The operation began May 28, 1999 and is seasonal, with the number of employees ranging from five employees in the winter months to as many as twelve part-time seasonal employees during the height of the season. CCCR does not own, control, or lease any track. The track used by CCCR is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation & Construction, which leases the tracks to Bay Colony Railroad Corporation (BA 3112). CCCR does not interchange with any other railroad. According to Mr. Kennedy, CCCR’s operation is smaller, but similar in service to the former railroads that operated the same tourist service over the past twenty years, identified as the former Cape Cod & Hyannis Scenic Railroad and the former Cape Cod Railroad. Keolis Downer Awarded the Transport Contract in Newcastle
PRESS RELEASE Paris, 12 December 2016 Keolis Downer awarded the first multimodal transport contract in Newcastle, Australia Keolis’ Australian subsidiary, Keolis Downer, has been awarded a 10 year contract to operate and maintain a new integrated public transport system in Newcastle. The contract will generate total revenue of around €312 million (AU$450 million) and will start in July 2017. This is the first multimodal contract to be tendered to the private sector in Australia and includes operations and maintenance for buses, ferries and a new light rail system. Through this new contract Keolis strengthens its presence in Australia and its position as a leading multimodal operator. Keolis Downer today welcomes the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s announcement that it has been awarded a 10 year contract with Transport for NSW to operate an integrated public transport system for the city of Newcastle, located north of Sydney (360,000 inhabitants). A first in Australia Newcastle Transport is the first multimodal transport system to be contracted to a private operator in Australia and integrates network planning and design, with the operation and maintenance of the city’s buses, ferries, future light rail (in 2019) and interchange. This integrated transport solution will deliver better services for residents and visitors and will play an important role in the revitalisation of the city. Keolis Downer will use its unique expertise in network design to build a transport offer that meets the local community’s needs. This will encourage people to use public transport, connect them to business areas and reduce the use of individual cars. -
