Update No.144 - Don’t Blame the Weather Prems dip out but Reserves, Thirds, Fourths & Juniors did us Proud

Farewell to the UK Lads - Elliot, Cameron and Alex The three leave for home in just a few days. Theiy have contributed hugely to the Club, EDCA and ACA in their time here with their coaching and willingness to complete the many tasks assigned to them. And playing – Elliot for the Prems, standing in for Ben Horne, kept outstandingly, Cam added a bit of pace and spite to the Thirds’ attack (when he wasn’t spraying them) and Alex hit a superb ton for the Reserves and kept very efficiently. Above all, they seem have enjoyed themselves immensely – thanks indeed guys, don’t forget us,keep in contact and come back to NZ, and Parnell, sometime in the future – you will always be welcome.

Men’s Premier Grade - The Big, Disastrous Weekend

Saturdays 10 &17 Feb. Hedley Howarth Trophy at Onewa Domain.

TAKAPUNA 204/8 dec. W O’Donnell 36, E Herd 33 PARNELL 69/10 Brad Rodden 40*, E Herd 4/34, M Jones 4/22 & 64/3 Brad Rodden 34 RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st Innings points to Takapuna

ACA’s WEBSITE REPORT ON DAY 2 – DAY 1 HAVING BEEN WASHED OUT COMPLETELY: Takapuna put in a dominant display with both bat and ball to ensure a first innings victory over Parnell at Onewa Domain. All of the Taka top six made it to double figures as the batsmen shared the runs about without anyone going onto that big score. Will O’Donnell (36) top scored for his side while Elliott ‘Powerhouse’ Herd was at this destructive best smashing 33 off just 16 balls including four sixes. Tail enders Shane Setia (29) and Ross ter Braak (26*) added some valuable runs as Taka posted 204/8 declared. The Parnell reply started in disastrous fashion, losing both Ben Rae (LBW) and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter (run out) in the second over of the innings. The collapse was on and by the 15th over Parnell found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 27/6. Spinners Matt Jones (4-22) and Herd (4-34) were the chief destroyers for the home side, both bowlers showing superb control and variation on a turning track. Brad Rodden (40*) was the only Parnell batsman to make it into double figures as they were bowled out for 69. Asked to bat again Parnell opened up with Rodden this time and he once again top scored with 34. The Parnell top order showed some grit this time round ensuring it was just a first innings loss they suffered at the hands of Taka’s spinners.

That is how Auckland Cricket, rather kindly, put it. The fact is that, lying 3rd in the Table before start of play, and the top 4 to procede to play off for the Championship, our Prems only salvaged 2 bonus points from this game allowing East Coast Bays to catch us and win on the countback on the basis of having had an outright win earlier in the season.

OUTCOME: • Auckland University, Papatoetoe, Howick Pakuranga and East Coast Bays play off for the Hedley Howarth Trophy • Parnell, Cornwall, Takapuna and Grafton United compete for places 5-8 and the dreaded possibility of relegation.

OUR PREMS’ DRAW FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON: 24 Feb. & 3 Mar. vs. Cornwall at Shore Road Reserve 1. 10 & 11 March vs. Grafton United (& for the James Russell Trophy) at Victoria Park 1. 17 & 24 March vs. Takapuna (& for the Ken Robertson Cup) at Shore Road 1.

Sunday 18 Feb. Jeff Crowe Cup Semi Final at Shore Road Reserve

PARNELL 201/10 (47.5) Jesse Simpson 54 (89), L Rodrigues 5/40 (8) CORNWALL 205/2 (36.5) RESULT: CORNWALL WON BY 8 & WILL MEET TAKAPUNA IN THE FINAL ON 4 MARCH

A good, old fashioned thumping – we did not bat well, only Jesse stuck it out on a good batting track. Most of our batsmen got starts – Ben Rae 23, Andy Lane 16, James Bevin 27, Dave Goddard 28 but no one carried on. Brad Rodden was run out afor 18 hafter doing the “hard yards” – he faced 58 balls. Brad was the only batsman to shape up on Saturday and, on Sunday, his dismissal spoilt our chance of a decent total. Then Guptill-Bunce batted superbly, ably supported by Dhadwal, and took the Semi Final from us.

PAPATOE TOE 289/9 (50) T Hickson 132, R Lilii 74, A le Marquand 4/64, G Lord 2/63 PARNELL 108/10 (32.2) S Naidu 24, H Patel 20 RESULT: WIN TO PAPATOETOE

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade

Saturday 17 February PARNELL vs WAITAKERE at SHORE ROAD RESERVE 1,

WAITAKERE 154/10 (34.3) Rudi Bischoff 1/24 (6), Sam Petersen 1/31 (7), Hamish Robertson 4/41 (10) Razin Bharde 3/25 (8) 39/5 (10) PARNELL 178/7 Cam Gibbons 55*,..Tom Talbot 29, Sam Fastier 29 RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st Innings points to Parnell

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: We got on the field at last!! Two weekends of rain seems like a month out of the game? Tough on batsmen who all need time at the crease to keep up momentum.

We won the toss (at last) and decided to bowl

Waitakeri scored 154 all out after 34.3 overs with only one substantial partnership of 60 runs.

PCC :

Rudi and Sam Petersen opened; Sam has recently moved up from Wellington and a welcome addition to our ranks of pace bowlers which are looking a little depleted at present. Rudi taking 1 for 24 off his 6 overs Sam taking 1 for 31 off his 7 overs

Hamish Robertson and Razin Bharde then settled into long spells and the spin twins taking 7 wickets between them Hamish taking 4 for 41 off his 10 overs and; Razin taking 3 for 25 off his 8 overs It has been a very successful season for Hamish in the Reserves and must be knocking hard on the door of the Prems? Great to see Razin getting amongst the wickets again, adding so much to the side, along with his outstanding efforts in the field. Fielding generally has been good of late with Cam Gibbons leading the way along with Will Ormiston who has a great pair of hands in the slips and quality fielding in the outfield. Add to this the balnce of the side are all contributing to the fielding effort.

At this point I take the opportunity to farewell Alex Grimes who has been an outstanding team man contributing in every area of the game. His keeping in the initial part of the season and, subsequently he bowled a few leg spinners, once he had, unselfishly, handed the gloves on to Harry Miller. Add to this his batting, scoring the Reserves only 100 (before Christmas) to- date. Thank you Alex it has been so good having you in the side

Our turn with the bat:

With regular opener Callum Douglas now at Otago Uni we opened with Harry Miller and Will Ormiston. We lost both openers early before Cam Gibbons steadied the ship. Cam, along with Tom Talbot 29 and then with Sam Fastier also 29 producing partnerships of 41 and 61 respectively. Alex Grimes chipped in with a well played 22 to see us past their total and a mu ch needed first innings win. Cam Gibbons (ex NZ U19 opener) past his half century and ended up 55 not out. A really good patient innings ensuring we got home. Welcome to Parnell Cam..

We declared at 178 for 7 wickets and put Waitakere in to bat for the remaining 10 overs of the game. Securing 5 wickets in that short time which will help the bonus points situation as the season progresses into the last rounds.

Our bowling in this innings: Rudi and Hamish opened, with Hamish again in the wickets.

All in all a good day at the office

Premier Reserve Women – T20 Champs.

17 February PARNELL vs HOWICK PAKURANGA at Lloyd Elsmore Park 7a.

HOWICK PAKURANGA 94/0 (20) PARNELL 67/6 (14) Emma Irwin 14*, Lexy Bassett 52* RESULT: WIN TO PARNELL

No report received but obviously a most impressive win to Parnell. Congratulations to opener Emma Irwin for carrying her bat and supporting Lexy who knocked off the runs needed with ease. Late last week Tom Bassett alerted me to the great news that these girls had actually played, and won, their game on 3 February. This was the only game played in that Grade, and, I believe, the only Senior game that took place. Men or Women, on the day. Congratulations to both sides, Parnell and Kumeu, in agreeing to play under such adverse conditions.

Men’s Fourth Grade - “Thirds”

Saturdays 10 & 17 February PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA at Onewa Domain 2a.

PARNELL 214/10 (43.1) Christy O’Brien 68, TAKAPUNA 130/10 (34) Cam Rope 2/?, Simon Walker 2/? RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st Innings points to Parnell

Two views of Mohan Wali

And two views of Simon Walker

And Cameron Willis, too

Sid Kumar, 15 year old debutant, batting and bowling

Ashwin had success with his leggies Day 1., as with all grades, was washed out. Day 2 – fine and the Thirds batted first reaching a reasonable total of 214 thanks particularly to new captain Christy O’Brien’s very competent 68. A number of others chipped in to support him but no one else reached 30. Takapuna, in reply, lost wickets early. Our attack of Mohan Wali and Simon Walker, opening, followed by Cameron Willis, Cameron Rope and Sid Kumar proved too hostile, restricted their scoring and made regular inroads. Rory O’Brien’s spin added variety and Ashwin’s leggies captured a . A 1st innings win was easily secured. A special welcome to Sid, a 15 year old ACG Parnell College student, who bowled very creditably on his debut for Parnell. Coached by Simon Herbst, Sid shows considerable promise as a pace bowler and is a very welcome addition to our Thirds.

Men’s Senior 7th Grade 2 Day Championship - “Fourths”

Saturdays 10 & 17 February PARNELL vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Onewa Domain 2a.

PARNELL 269/9 (45) Hamish Grey 30, Tim Konara 52* TAKAPUNA 130/10 (34) Peter Hickman 5/? RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st Innings points to Parnell

ACTING SKIPPER ELLIOT HUMPHRIES REPORTING: The 4ths were raring to go against the top of the table Suburbs Titans. After taking them down in the one dayer the boys hopes were high for another good performance. Batting first we got off to a flyer with 30 runs coming off the first two overs mainly thanks to extras. Hamish Grey pushed on to 30 before tragically being run out. Contributions from Wes Van Wyk and Lance Pooley get the score ticking over before Tim Konara exploded at the end scoring a quick fire 52 not out guiding the boys to 269 for 9 after the 45 overs.

Suburbs came out swinging, looking like they were trying to chase it down within 20 overs. Peter Hickman back from injury took a few early wickets to put the pressure on Suburbs, He was well supported by Tim at the other end. A Continual flow of wickets meant Suburbs were never in it falling 130 runs short. Peter Hickman taking 5 wickets and Tim with his 50 were the standouts on the day.

Sunday, 18 Feb. – Junior Field Day vs. Howick Pakuranga

A highly successful day for Parnell as we won 8 of the 10 games played. Unfortunately I have had no report of the Field Day except for the photo above, of the Howick Pakuranga and Parnell captains anf the two trophy bats, at the Prizegiving.

Hertfortshire Seniors vs. Auckland Over 60s

Win to Hertfordshire, 200, Auckland 180 - details approx

Yesterday we hosted this large touring party (some 30 in all, players, umpires and wives) and the Auckland team led by Rod Smith. A very competitive game was played on Bloodworth followed by a BBQ dinner in the Mike Simpson Lounge. Some of the Hertfordshire players had played at Parnell previously, with the Forty Club some 5/6 sesons ago. Duncan Elder, leading the Hertfordshire Team, recalled, when playing for North Middlesex in the early’80s, that Craig Presland was a team mate. Craig, our Chairman, was able to attend the Dinner, caught up with Duncan and swopped stories of old times. Hertfordshire are touring NZ – we wish them fine weather – and return for a further game at Shore Road on 7 March.

VSL News – Message from Peter McDermott Fingletoads to UK The Fingletoads Cricket Group are planning another trip to England in May next year coinciding with the Cricket World Cup that commences 30th May 2019.

The tour is along the lines of the previous tours the Fingletoads have undertaken in the United Kingdom and will be based on the following draft preparations.

We will be visiting some of our favourite p-laces in the Midlands and Southern Counties and will be limited to 36 people including escort/s (probably Dianne and me).

The tour will feature visits to some wonderful villages in England with delightful local Clubs hosting the group at iconic village and country cricket grounds.

The tour is open to players over the age of 50 and wives and partners are welcomed. The tour is inclusive not exclusive and players of all ages (over 50), ability, agility and experience are welcomed.

Our teams play for the love of the game, play to the best of our ability but emphasise total enjoyment with friendly competition against like- minded teams. Though we compete as best we can on the field major features of the tour including renewing old friendships, creating new ones and enjoying the great social opportunities that arise at the Clubs that host us and the places where we stay.

Umpires, supporters and family members are welcomed and in the past have been important members of the touring groups.

Prices to be advised and will not include international travel, nor travel from Bath at the conclusion of the tour. We will prepare international travel prices as optional extras if required and if we have enough people travelling to London together will organise a group travel arrangement. Internal travel is per an airconditioned luxury coach. Games will be at leading village and club fields that are typical of country cricket in England.

Most of the destinations, hotels, clubs and fields are known to us and provide an outstanding England touring experience. Some are still to be confirmed but arrangements are coming together really well.

We are seeking expressions of interest from past and current Fingletoads and for those who wish to join the Fingletoads for this tour (and possibly future tours to follow). The Fingletoads is a spin-off from the Auckland University Cricket Club and is open to any interested cricketers, supporters, officials, wives, partners and family who enjoy the thought of touring in a relaxed friendly group enjoying true Village Cricket and the delightful regions and Clubs that will be visited.

The Fingletoads have previously toured Australia (several times), USA (California a number of times and the East Coast), India, South Africa, Argentina/Peru/Chile, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and England (several times) and also Italy and France. There are currently approximately 200 people on the Fingletoads mailing list with players drawn from principally New Zealand but including regulars from USA, Barbados, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The tours are organised and managed by Dianne and Peter McDermott of Vintage Sport and Leisure Ltd (VSL) based in Orewa, north of Auckland. The tours are generally not-for-profit but VSL direct costs are included in the price. Our established networks ensure we get excellent fixtures at great venues at very reasonable cost. Our hotel bookings are managed by the VSL Office in London who negotiate very good rates at very well- chosen hotels that suit the requirements of our teams.

This tour will sell out - if you wish to join the Fingletoads on an enjoyable and relaxed cricket tour of England please let us know by contacting Dianne McDermott - [email protected]

Quiz

No one can through with answers but last week’s Update came out very late. I put a bit of thought into this Quiz and the info it will reveal is most interesting, so I will give it another run – please have a go – I am most interested to hear from you:

With all this wet weather and washouts – one of your Editor’s few opportunities to get to Eden Park to see the Aces was thwarted last Sunday. Yours truly, instead, enjoyed the Winter Olympics and the sterling efforts of our Snowboarder and Speed Skater – dramatic viewing of some amazing athleticism, skill and stamina. And didn’t our Kiwis do well – medal opportunities were offering and not an Aussie competitor in sight. Then the mind turned to the need to produce an Update with no play to report. Good time to browse, turn up some obtuse issues, facts and figures in the hope of testing readers:

QUESTION 1. A current Parnell Premier player is related to AEJ COLLINS – name that Parnell player:–

Who was AEJ Collins? Note that, in 1899, AEJ Collins scored 628 in a school house match - extract from Wikipedia:

AEJ Collins - a studio photo of Collins after scoring 628 and, later, of him in the Clifton School 1st XI Photos from ESPNcricinfo Arthur Edward Jeune "James" Collins (18 August 1885 – 11 November 1914), typically now known by his initials A. E. J. Collins, was an English cricketer and soldier. He is most famous for achieving what was, for 116 years, the highest-ever recorded score in cricket: as a 13-year-old schoolboy, he scored 628 not out over four afternoons in June 1899. Collins's record- making innings drew a large crowd and increasing media interest; spectators at the Old Cliftonian match being played nearby were drawn away to watch the junior school house cricket match in which Collins was playing. Despite this achievement, Collins never played first-class cricket. Collins's 628 not out stood as the record score till January 2016 when an Indian boy, Pranav Dhanawade scored 1009 in a school game. Collins joined the British Army in 1902 and studied at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, before becoming an officer in the Royal Engineers. He served in France during the First World War, where he was killed in action in 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. Collins had been mentioned in despatches and also represented the Royal Military Academy at cricket and rugby union.

The Question, again, is . What is the relationship of AEJ Collins to a present Parnell cricketer?

QUESTION 2. The following all have two things in common: JULIUS CAESAR, JN CRAWFORD , DR JARDINE, AV BEDSER, .PBH MAY, JC LAKER, GAR LOCK, & SM CURRAN What are the two aspects in common?

QUESTION 3.> Of, the following England Test captains, who were actually BORN in ENGLAND? Sir Pelham WARNER, DR JARDINE, FR BROWN, MC COWDREY, ER DEXTER, DB CLOSE, AW GREIG, Nasser HUSSAIN, AN COOK QUESTION 4.> Several current Parnell Premier and Premier Reserves players have played or has a parent or close relative who has played 1st Class or even . Please name a) the Parnell players who, themselves, have played 1st Class cricket b) those, and their relative(s), who have played 1st Class or Test cricket

QUESTION 5. Who, of the following Australian Test cricketers, never played cricket in New Zealand? FR SPOFFORTH, CG MACARTNEY, AF KIPPAX, SJ McCABE, Sir Donad BRADMAN, RR LINDWALL, KR MILLER, WJ O’REILLY, N O’NEILL, RB SIMPSON, AR BORDER, DK LILEE, JR THOMSON, IM CHAPPELL, SK WARNE, RT PONTING, SB SMITH
