DAY 2. – Saturday, 9 December:

Grafton United resumed at 29/1. Mike Ravlic and Josh Fisher (1 & 2 above), opened our attack. Josh had captured the one with his last ball the previous Saturday and much rested on him and Rav as Dean van Deventer had a strained side and was unable to bowl.

Variath had been joined by GU’s professional, Nick Hendrie, from KwaZulu Natal Inland with 28 1st Class games under his belt for 1651 runs at 33.88 and currently in top form. They had taken the total to 81 when Rav had Hendrie caught behind by Fossie and jubilation.(1 above) One ball later, even greater scenes of rapture – Rav snared GU’s second pro, Ian Cockbain lbw first ball – photo 2 says it all - until,

in the ensuing congratulatory melee, our Skipper sprained his ankle (1.) and Dr Bevin immediately had to render professional advice (2.). Advice taken, Skipper limped from the field, ice applied and his services lost for the day & several weeks to come. The value of removing Cockbain cannot be underestimated – a 30 year old who has 7 seasons (50 1st Class games – 2352 runs at 30.15, 4 x 100s, highest 151*) for Gloucestershire. A breakthrough not to be sneezed at – 81/3 BUT now 2 bowlers short.

Brad (1. above) struck bowling Variath – 111/4 but Parikh and Parsons stuck.Elliot tried, unsuccessfully, to stump off Mitch’s offies

Josh returned to break the partnership – another catch to Fossie, to dismiss Parikh 143/5 and, so, into the tail. No - 17 old Dylan Taylor from Rangitoto College batted most maturely. He lost Parsons, skittled by Rav – 172/6 – but with another youngster, Stobart, worries mounted.

200 up, 225 – both batsmen looking more & more confident. 230 -Taylor smacked Mitch over long on for 6 – Mitch flighted one, Taylor went to sweep, missed & the Umpire answered the pleas. Lbw for 68 (as above), A very crucial moment - Taylor’s was a fine knock – 238/7.

This now had to be the tail but Stobart continued to stick. James Bevin had a few overs (1,) but Josh (2.) had to come back & it was he who removed Snedden at 273 (Fossie’s 3rd catch) and Hassan, lbw, at 289. The end – still no – number 11 stuck, 300 up, only 39 needed!

Then Josh struck for the 5th time and was all over – Stobart, after 145 balls and 47 runs, was clean bowled, First innings points to Parnell, the James Russell Trophy retained, and Josh Fisher’s second 5 for this season – 5/97

James Russell Trophy & Luncheon

James Russell (in later life & who played with distinction for both Clubs not in cricketing attire!) and the James Russell Trophy As mentioned above, Parnell managed to retain the James Russell Trophy - a challenge trophy between the two oldest cricket clubs in . James Russell was one of the founders of Parnell CC in 1858 and, due to the exodus of men from Auckland in 1861 (Otago gold rush and Maori Wars), was instrumental in the founding of the United CC. Russell, Parnell’s Secretary, became Secretary of United which, in time, became Grafton United CC. Parnell CC continued to play games through the 1860s and 70s and reformed in greater strength in the mid 1880s. Russell was a good cricketer. Parnell’s opening bat in all it’s earliest games then, in the very first interprovincial game, Auckland vs Wellington, March 1861, he took 10 . In the return game Russell took 6 wickets in the match. He kept wickets in later years and continued to play until about 1873. A remarkable man, a lawyer by profession, Russell was a founding member of many of Auckland’s most notable clubs and institutions including Auckland Law Society, Auckland Racing Club, the Northern Club, Auckland Golf Club and the Remuera Bowling Club. Cricket, obviously, continued to be of prime interest to him being President of Auckland Cricket Association for the decade to 1901/02 Most fitting that Parnell and Grafton United Cricket Clubs compete for the James Russell Trophy.

THE LUNCHEON In Parnell President Rod Smith’s absence overseas, Past Presiden, Bryan Haggitt, hosted a Luncheon for Parnell and Grafton United dignitaries and stalwarts to mark this meeting of the oldest cricket clubs. Some Thirty odd attended including who played with distinction for both Clubs. Mark grew up at Parnell, joining at a very young age, made his 1st Class debut for NZ U23s but shortly after moved to Grafton United to further his bowling prospects. Mark’s batting prospered, his bowling didn’t but he hit 5 Test centuries and captained NZ to it’s first Test win over England, a side lead by Geoff Boycott. Mark addressed us and reminisced over his experiences playing for both Clubs. John Sparling, Patron of Auckland Cricket attended and other former Test cricketers present were Ross Morgan (Parnell) and (Grafton United and now Parnell’s Director of Cricket). A particular welcome was given Israel Vaeliki, a partner in James Russell’s old Law firm of Jackson Russell. Israel is a keen cricketer and a member of Auckland University CC. Representing Grafton United were President Stu Wilson and also Nick Albrecht, a Past President and current member of Auckland Cricket’s Board.and a number of other past players and administrators.

AT THE LUNCHEON

Wednesday, 13 December PARNELL vs. TAKAPUNA Onewa Domain 1. TAKAPUNA 152/9 (20) W O’Donnell 22 (13), E Herd 47 (22), Mike Ravlic 2/39 (4) Josh Fisher 1/23 (4), Jesse Simpson 2/21 (4), Mitch McCann 0/14 (2) Hamish Robertson 3/26 (4), James Bevin 1/28 (2). PARNELL 153/3 (16.4) Ben Rae 79* (53), Brad Rodden 43* (19), RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 7 WICKETS

A gloriously fine evening but with a stiffish wind over on the Shore. Onewa Domain – the pitch green with grass, unlike on our Prems previous visit at the end of last season. Takapuna, usually a very capable batting side, never really got started. ‘Keeper Elliot Foster picked up catches from 3 of the first 4 batsmen to fall and the other was a mighty catch on the boundary by Andy Lane to remove Will O’Donnell. Only Elliot Herd’s clean hitting near the end took advantage of the extremely short boundaries – he hit 5 sixes in his 47. Josh Fisher’s one handed take on the boundary was a major talking point as it not only saved what looked like a certain 6 but got rid of Herd as well. 153 to win but James and ter Braak were sharp – Ben Rainger was lbw, Mitch McCann caught and, Andy Lane was picked up when spin came on. But Ben Rae was still there – returning after 3 seasons away and a recent back operation – he seemed totally at home and, with Brad Rodden, stroked us to victory. Ben hit 8 fours and 4 sixes, Brad, only 1 four but 5 sixes – a display of marvellously mature batting. At 56/3, the loss of a further wicket could have been disasterous but there was no panic, singles came, balls played on merits and, when opportunities arose, the ball was hit with great power and timing – a superb display earning a very dominant 7 wicket win.

1. Hamish Robertson made a good return to the Prems 2. Josh, having taen the boundary catch 3. Rav – note the batsman is already on the move

1. & 2. Ben Rae is back and in top form immediately Brad Rodden – controlled power

Ben 79* and a 7 wicket win – greeted with acclamation by his Team Mates!

Takapuna CC’s Mystery Solved – KH Robertson’s Ball

Takapuna CC recently found a mounted ball amongst archival hoardings – inscribed “KH Robertson for 2 hat tricks in an innings for Parnell, 1943/44”. Why did Takapuna have it?? Our Pressies learned of this last Saturday and hot footed back to Shore Road with the news that Taka would return the Trophy to Parnell, obviously the rightful holder. Obvious occasion – Takapuna vs Parnell Prems’ T20 on Wednesday. Come the Day: Onewa Domain - the Trophy is produced, our Chairs confer - Takapuna’s Suzy Martin and our Craig Presland. Enter “Sherlock” Speakman – “Mystery?? No - elementary – in 1950, KH Robertson became Takapuna CC’s inaugural President – just look at your Honours Board.” “Sherlock” Speaks explained that Robertson played for Parnell in lower grades through the 1940s, was a leading administrator (Secretary and Treasurer) until moving to the Shore. “I assume the Robertson family gifted Takapuna CC the ball after Ken’s passing. As your founding President it is fitting that the ball remain with you.” Logical decision, Takapuna must retain the ROBERTSON BALL in recognition/remembrance of their inaugual President. Perfect outcome on a most pleasant evening at Onewa Domain.

2 & 9 Dec. PARNELL vs. NORTH SHORE Devonport Domain 1. NORTH SHORE 195/10 Razin Bharde 5/41 (20), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 3/42 (16) & 144/5 PARNELL 170/10 Simon Wood 42, Sam Fastier 55, & 98/4 Callum Douglas 27, Will Ormiston 43, RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st Innings points to North Shore

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING ON DAY 2.: DAY 1, 2nd December, ended with North Shore scoring 195 in their first innings and Parnell in reply were 75 for 5 wickets.

DAY 2, 9th December Sam Fastier was already at the crease at the end of day one and was joined by Alex Grimes. Sam soon got into his work taking 10 off the first over of the day. Alex hit a boundary but, the centurion from the last game, was out adjudged LBW to the spinner (the score at 84 for 6) this left us with a fair bit of work to do to with the remaining batsmen BUT we felt we were certainly of the game. Hamish Robinson joined Sam and they combined well, pushing the score along 129 before an awful LBW decision went the way of the home side, Hamish being given out LBW when hit high on the thigh pad and going down the leg-side. This partnership had put together a well grafted 45 runs.

William St John joined Sam and they worked hard to keep us in the game putting together another good partnership of 33 runs. Sam was eventually caught behind for a very well played 55, leaving William St John battling away with Razin Bharde. William was out LBW for a very valuable 16 runs with the total at 170 for 9 and the first innings was soon wrapped up with Ganesh Ratnas out caught behind from the first ball he faced. Razin had worked hard for his 7 not out.

North Shore batted again and after 35 overs (tea break) they were 109 for 3 wickets.

The game had, up to this point, delivered no more than a little over 3 runs per over. They held a lead (at tea) of 134 and evidently had decided to set us a total of around 175 runs. They continued to bat a further 6 overs, eventually declaring leaving PCC a target of 170 off effectively 20 overs remaining in the day!!

Interesting declaration to say the least, based on the run rate for the game as mentioned above. We were not deterred and decided to give it a go. Callum Douglas showed some real class taking 12 off the first over and he and Will Ormiston continued this momentum talking 49 runs off the first 7 overs of the innings with some positive aggressive batting and excellent running between the wickets. By the end of the second over of the innings North Shore had dispatched 5 fielders to the boundary in a very defensive one day field setting. Exactly what they planned as a side bewildered us and poses the question, what were they trying to do to make a game of it as such??

Callum was first out for 27 caught on the square leg fence for a high quality innings full of excellent shots all around the ground for 27 runs of 17 balls. We decided to throw 4 wickets at the chase, giving William Ormiston the opportunity to show his fine attacking form with a quick 43 runs off 43 balls. Sam Fastier came and went also sacrificing his wicket to the cause scoring 4 runs. Tom Talbot followed in the same vain running well to keep Will Ormiston on strike. Tom went for 10 runs leaving Joe Gray and Simon Wood to close up shop with us scoring 95 off 17 overs, not before Joe smashed a rather large 6 in his last innings for the club this season.

Joe you have been outstanding, bringing energy, positivity and an all round great attitude to the side along with some determined batting and bowling. WE will miss you and send you off wishing you a wonderful last week in NZ and all the very best for Christmas and the year, 2018, ahead. I for one sincerely hope that you will make it back to Parnell CC in the not too distant future?

The lads of this side played an excellent brand of cricket over the two days, never giving up at any stage or feeling that this game was out of our reach.

Congratulations men it was a disappointing outcome, no doubt, for all of us but, we went down kicking and fighting all the way.

What more can a coach and the Parnell Cricket Club ask for?

9 December PARNELL vs. HOWICK PAKURANGA Melville Park 4a. PARNELL 220/5 (50) Emma Irwin 89* (87), Hetali Patel 73 (90), A Thilakaratne 21 (16)

HOWICK PAKURANGA 224/5 (33) C Stevens 90 (99), Erin 63 (67) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 5 WICKETS

A marvellous opening stand of 153 by Emma and Hetali was, sadly, not supported by our other batswomen. Great shame that Emma did not get more of the strike as she scored just better than a run a ball, remained undefeated and, surely, deserved a century. And well batted Hetali! Then, despite some very effective bowling from Jess and Hetali Howick, Pak got home at a canter. A loss but, still, huge promise!

Men’s 4TH Grade 2 Day Championship – Parnell “Thirds” 2 & 9 Dec. – PARNELL THIRDS vs. PAPATOETOE Colin Maiden Park PAPATOETOE 246/7 dec. (60) & 111/4 dec. CAPTAIN/COACH RUDI BISSCHOFF REPORTING: Thirds continued the 2nd Day vs Papatoetoe with hope of a 1st innings win having been 117/1 after 23 overs. That was not to be as our batting order once again struggled and with the scoring coming to an absolute halt, putting way too much pressure on the lower order to come out and suddenly smash balls a round. PCC was all out for 200. Very disappointing display after being in such a good position. Luke O'Toole (68) and Jack Coman (37) the batters that stood out. Never the less, Papatoetoe went in to bat and set PCC 158 to chase in 15 overs. R Bisschoff (8 - 3 - 19 - 2), S Walker (7 - 1 - 34 - 2). A very tall task, but the players opted to go for it. Rowan (38) batted well. We lost quick wickets and ended getting 71/6 at end of play. A disappointing loss. But the boys will work hard at training over the next week to prepare ourselves for the next game. Next week it's back to the One Dayers and a different approach.

CAPTAIN JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING ON DAY 2. We returned to Keith Hay Park for Day 2 - Eden Roskill 31/1 and we in the hope to take early wickets and roll them cheaply. However this was not meant to be as we dropped early chances. It was not till the 11th over of the day when Partridge took a one handed screamer off Humphries to remove their opener. We continued to bowl tightly even as Eden Roskill tried to push the run rate trying to hit out at every thing. Chances galore and a number put down. For all that, Eden Roskill never really had much chance of getting to our total as wickets tumbled. Their innings ended with three wickets falling in the final over of Eden Roskill’s innings. With the game so far advanced and no chance of an outright, we went into bat for our second innings changing the batting order to give everyone a run. After early wicket fell Humphries entered and some great defence carried us through to the close of play. This was not our best win of the season but a win is a win after all.

CHAK ARUNACHALAM REPORTING FOR SOWNDAR, SKIPPER OF PARNELL “KINGS”: Hope you had a good weekend, it was a lovely Saturday, better than Sunday. We played against Grafton Indo Kiwi Gujaratis at Madills farm 1a. We lost the toss yet again and were asked to bowl first. Arul and Aaron opened the bowling and it was terrific. Arul was unplayable with his pace and movement away from the right handers. He was unlucky not to get a wicket as in 5 overs he gave away just 10 runs in his first spell. Aaron was equally good and with the pressure coming from the other end got the first breakthrough with the batsman getting strangulated down the leg and Chak finishing the formalities. He also got the second wicket with the batsman trying to go over the top only to be caught at mid off. Sowndar and Ashwin came in for the second spell and they were terrific as well. Sowndar knocking the stumps off twice with his inswingers and Ashwin with his pace and variations got a couple of wickets as well. Runs were too hard to come and some brilliant kept things in check. Arul and Aaron came back to finish off the formalities as Grafton was dismissed for 67 in 24overs. In reply Parnell chasing a small total wanted to finish the game quickly to get a good run rate, started off well with Abrar scoring 10 in the first over and Chak scoring 8 in the second. But they both got dismissed in a hurry to score runs, but Sowndar and Roy finished it off and the game was over in just 7.4 overs. A big victory boosting our chances to get promoted in the second half of the season.

Presidents’ Grade 9 December– PARNELL “PRESSIES” vs TAKAPUNA at Thos. Bloodworth Park 1. TAKAPUNA 249/5 (35) Greg James 1/42 (7), Roger Harvey 1/44 (7) PARNELL 116/10 (31.4) Chris Laycock 50 (72), Mark Tapper 29 (50) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 133 RUNS

JOHN NICOL REPORTING (UNDERSTANDABLY BRIEF): “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” - Winston Churchill Takapuna, last year’s champions, were put in to bat. Though not in the first over this time, Takapuna's opening bat was dropped in the slips (Nicol) off Monteiro in the 4th over and went on to score a century. Some brutal hitting in the middle and later stages saw all bowlers go for 6 or more an over. One particularly well hit ball stopped on the chest and dropped (Nicol). It all resulted in Takapuna setting an imposing total. Good bowling throughout the innings by Takapuna saw Parnell contained early on (46 runs behind at drinks) and dismantled later. Laycock saw off the openers to face a first change bowler who was even quicker. The tail-enders were subjected to very accurate right arm inswingers. Only 3 batsmen got past single figures including 3 ducks (of which 2 were golden). Onto the next game with enthusiasm.. Photographer Craig was on hand to record the debacle:

1. Seam isn’t upright, Gormo 2. Roger returns, temporarily, to the fold and 3. Flights one up with all the guile of yesteryear

PARNELL 139/5 (35) DJ Hawkesby 28*, Morgan Tapper 20*, Ashan Weerasinghe 32* GRAFTON UNITED 111/8 (35) Charlie Dickinson 2/? RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 28 RUNS Grafton won the toss and elected to field. Parnell batted strongly, scoring 139/5 in 28 overs, at 5 runs per over. Excellent performances in particular by opener DJ Hawkesby (28*), Morgan Tapper (20*), and a man-of-the-match knock by Ashan Weerasinghe (32* off 23 balls). At the change of innings, the team felt it had a par score. Grafton plays its Rep team together in G6 Premier cricket, so they are a well drilled side who know each other well. Parnell knew not to underestimate them and were very focussed on the bowling and fielding effort. Parnell bowled excellent line and length, and fielded well, as evidenced by quality catching and tidy ground fielding throughout. Parnell’s bowling attack was able to build pressure from over 10, and take wickets regularly, and Grafton was unable to lift its run rate enough to challenge Parnell’s total. All the bowlers performed very well, with six of the bowlers ending with Economy Rates at 3 or better, and many chipping in with valuable wickets at key times. Notable mentions to Charlie Dickinson who got 2 for, and captained the team well in the field, and to Jack Hernon, who kept wicket for 28 overs, effected a run out with Tim Hamilton, took a difficult catch off Bruno Duder’s excellent left arm leg spin, and all without conceding a bye! Parnell conceded only 7 extras in the match, which pointed to an excellent overall effort with the ball. Grafton is a good side, and the match was played in an excellent spirit and was closely fought. Grafton ended up with 111/8, at 4 an over. A hard earned but well-deserved victory for Parnell.

Visited the TJC – NSW Under 14 Team

Having just flown in last Saturday morning, this Aussie side, enroute to a Tournament in Rotorua, had an afternoon in the TJC and then watched the closing stages of our Prem game vs Grafton United.

Quiz - Remarkable Cricket Grounds

Earlier this week Rod Eddowes quizzed me as to the whereabouts of a lovely cricket ground he had just visited. Your Editor failed the test despite having played on 3 other grounds not too far distant. So, readers, your turn:

QUESTION 1. Where is this lovely Oval, above, that Rod visited?

And on the same subject of magnificent grounds, one of our fellow Parnell administrators - on the Pressies email list (though he hasn’t, yet, turned out for them) and has a lad who is fully occupied on Saturday afternoons – told me that he is pictured batting in this book of “Remarkable Cricket Grounds”

QUESTION 2. a) Who is the batsman above? b) What ground is he at? c) What does his lad do on Saturday afternoons? Answers to Editor, Bryan Haggitt - [email protected] No prize, just your name up in lights!
