Friday Evening, 3 Nov: 4.30 to 6.30pm Grade 1 Muster

“Hey Daddy – you are in the photo!!” IF ANYONE NEEDED REMINDING OF THE VALUE OF MEMORABILIA THEN JUST LOOK AT THIS! The rain stayed away and some 60+ five year olds made their cricketing debuts – for many of them the start of a lifetime love of the game. Great to see the parental, and grandparent support and the following photos tell the story of a most enjoyable evening and the return to the Club of a great many Dads and Mums who previously played for Parnell. This time introducing their youngsters to the game that they had enjoyed so much.

Grade 1s last Friday – a great turnout, Joe Kinghorn-Gray, the young professional coach from Edinburgh, welcomed the mass of 5 year olds, parents and grand parents and introduced his co-coaches Max Smith, Elliot Foster, Alex Grimes and Cameron Willis

Weather improved as the evening went on and Max Smith’s group showed their throwing skills by knocking over the 2 storied

Catches win matches - Elliot Foster instucting your Editor’s grandson (wearing the (maroon shirt – note: such practice shirts are available from the Club Office – email [email protected]). And – on the right Cam Willis with his charges.

The BBQ team lead by Sam who did a brilliant job in feeding the masses and (right) young Sean Fletcher with his Dad, Andrew, who played for Parnell and EDCA a wee time ago, and his Grandad, Angus who is President of the Cricket Society

. 1 & 2 - Flynn McGregor-Sumpter, in for Ben Rainger on exam leave, hit 69 With Aces, Chappie & Ben Horne, back for Saturday only, Mitch, standing in as Skipper, won the toss & elected to bat to give the two some batting practice. Not all went to plan – Ben lost his wicket immediately. HP’s pace attack is impressive – Grobbelaar plus new Aces contract players Danru Ferns & Jamie Brown plus Botadra. Mitch McClennaghan was also at the ground practicing but not playing – not chosen?

1. Mark Chapman, who played on Day 1. to be replaced by Callum Douglas (2. above) for Day 2.

Only time for 4 overs on Day 1. before the heavens opened – Chappie had time to make 9 & was undefeated with Flynn – 20/1. Day 2. Fine, no rain - Flynn resumed with Callum. HP attack was in force but Callum looked good till he was caught off Ferns at 40

1. & 2. Andy Lane Flynn soldiered on, joined by Andy, and the two proceded to dominate the HP attack on a good track. Flynn, looking more and more confident and Andy, very assured, kept the score moving well till Flynn misjudged and was – 145/2, a 105 partnership.

1. Another of Andy – a superb 94* 2. Jesse Simpson Andy carried on untroubled but Brad Rodden, for once, didn’t get going. With only 48 overs allowed us on the day (52 in all) before the compulsory declaration – runs had to come quickly. Stand in Skipper Mitch scored 14 of 15 balls but was caught when trying to hurry things along. Jesse arrived and from there all interest was whether Andy would reach his ton. Sadly he was 6 runs short – a ton would have been hugely deserved as he had batted exceptionally well against a top attack.

In the field defending 225/5 – Rav in action: Photos 1, 2 & 3. – he bowled very well but without luck (photos per Jim Allnatt)

1. Dean van Deventer 2. Josh Fisher Allotted 51 overs, Phillips & Walsh, both Auckland A batsmen, made a solid start and kept up with the clock. That against Rav and Dean then, first change, Josh, snared Phillips caught behind at 34. Josh then removed Walsh at 87 & Winn – 119/3. Invaluable wickets – all 3 have caused us major problems in the past. Dean, back in the attack dismissed Morrison for 50, who’s previous scores had been a 145, 59 & 87, followed quickly by two more – 140/6. Great 3 wicket spell from Dean. Neal, a big lad who hit big, had joined Jones – the chase was still on.

Hit around earlier, Skipper Mitch made the brave decision to bring hinself back on. Immediate success – Neal was very smartly stumped by Elliot off Mitch who, 1 run later, bowled Jones – 179/8. The ‘keeping in this game was remarkable – no byes in the game despite 413 runs scored off 103 overs – congratulations to HP’s Andrew Morrison who took a stumping and our Elliot Foster, also a stumping & 2 catches.

179/8 – HP, finally, put the shutters up – Rav was given the final over and, another big man, Danru Ferns took no chances & was undeterred by the umbrella field set by Mitch.

What about a 10 wicket win – just as meritorious as an innings win, why not 2 points? 2. Bonus Points are still hugely important – we have missed several already this season – 226/10 vs Cornwall in Round 1., just 4 more runs would have earned an additional point Round 2. – 225/5 vs Howick Pak. & having them 188/8 – 5 more runs & 1 more wicket would have given us 2 additional points. Bonus points are crucial to winning the Championship and players must be very aware of them and to take advantage at every opportunity.

All Other Senior Grades – Men & Women Very Sadly Cancelled Due to Rain Last Saturday

As dismal as it could be – Prem Reserves packing the marquee away in pouring rain after the Umpires had, very sensibly, abandoned play.

ONE BIT OF GOOD NEWS IN ALL THE RAIN & GLOOM: the previous Saturday, 28 October, only advised to me last Friday evening, our WOMEN’S PREMIER RESERVE TEAM played when few others had ventured out and, more importantly still, had a very significant WIN over CORNWALL. Full details still haven’t filtered through but this win is a most encouraging start to our Girls’ season!

However, Our Juniors Did Get Started Last Saturday Morning

Junior games are underway – better late than never! And very fortunate to beat the weather – all Senior games down for the afternoon were washed out. Our Prems, at Lloyd Elsmore Park, got in just 4 overs but, fortunately had a full day on Sunday. Thanks to Greg James & Phil Horne for these photos.

Just one performance reported to your Editor and many thanks to Carrie Nelson the emailing the following fantastic details:

YEAR 5 PARNELL WATLING vs. GRAFTON UNITED TAYLOR Thomas Nelson, bowling for Parnell, 3 overs 6 wickets for 3 (gross) runs

AND, YET ANOTHER PLEA FROM YOUR EDITOR – PLEASE SEND ME REPORTS OF YOUR GAMES – A QUICK EMAIL TO [email protected] IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED PLUS PHOTOS. PHOTOS ARE SO EASY TO TAKE ON CELL PHONES SO PLEASE SEND PICTURES OF YOUR “MAN OF THE MATCH” OR TOP BATSMEN & BOWLERS. HOW ABOUT THE WHOLE TEAM? KIDS LOVE TO SEE PHOTOS OF THEMSELVES!

On the Big Stage New Zealand Black Caps vs. India 1st T20 India won by 53 runs 2nd T20 NZ won by 40 runs 3rd T20 India won by 6 runs - India 67/5 (8) NZ 61/6 (8) rain affected

White Ferns vs. Pakistan 1st T20 NZ won by 15 runs

Superb effort by the White Ferns yesterday, following their ODI series win. Shame that the Black Caps didn’t pull off the Final – another 6 run loss.

Tribute to Craig Speakman our Photographer Over recent times, Craig has acquired a new Canon camera and is taking some truly wonderful cricket shots. Many, many times he has captured the fall of a wicket – a catch being taken, shattered stumps, leg stump cartwheeling or a stunning shot of a classic cover drive. Our players love the dozens of photos that Craig posts on Facebook. And he sends the pick to be included in Updates. In so doing he is creating a magnificent achival treasury. Some of his photos are truly outstanding. Great fun comparing some of Craig’s shots with some of the all time classics – as can be seen below:

Off spinners both – Jim Laker (left) at the Oval where he wreaked so much damage &, on the right, our Skipper Dave Goddard.

And the similarity ends – their follow throughs differ considerably. Note the tightness of Laker’s action, he must have exerted huge purchase on the ball. Dave, on the other hand, relying on flight and drift in the air – as his 6/57 vs. Cornwall attests.

Walter Hammond’s classic cover drive and Ben Rainger doing a good job to emulate him

Two other all time classics – G Beldham’s posed photo of Victor Trumper (also at the Oval) and the grace and power of Keith Miller. The shot of Miller was, reputedly, the favourite cricket photo of Australian PM, Robert Menzies.

And a couple of Craig’s classics this season – Andy Lane straight drives for 6, all timing &, likewise, Ben Horne hits with nonchalent ease.

But your Editor’s favourite amongst Craig’s collection – Lalit Bose driving, note the power and control! That was last season vs Ellerslie – at Michaels Ave, a game we lost.

Thanks Craig – wonderful photos, please keep snapping the shutter and sending through your photos!

Players Past - Their Sons are now Playing for Parnell

A couple more past players at the Grade 1. Opening last Friday:

1. Jonny Davison on the right – since his cricketing days he went mountaineering with great success 2. Steve Gallaugher, with bottle in hand, a Premier stalwart of a few years ado – it was he who was showing his lad his Prem photo on Page 1 of the Update

Grade 1s assemble again this evening from 4.30 – wonderful to have past players back at the Club and to welcome their sons and daughters, a new generation of Parnell players.
