Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.112 : 26 Nov. Winning Cricket & Sun!

Heroes of the Weekend:

Callum Douglas – 118* Lalit Bose – 219 off 113 balls Karun Phorgat – 6 for 43

1 & 2: Callum Douglas and Lalit Bose – for our Thirds vs. Grafton United, Callum scored 118* on his Parnell Senior debut and Lalit hit a colossal 219 off only 113 balls.Their 2nd partnership of 292 falls just short of the Parnell Lower Grade Record for that wicket – 297 set by R Bracefield and J Wallace in 2013/14. Callum comes to us from the King’s College 1st XI, for whom he scored a ton last month, and he has previously represented Parnell in EDCA Age Group teams and Under 17s. Lalit arrived a fortnight ago from UK having recently graduated from Durham University. He represented the University in a 1st Class match, vs. Warwickshire, in 2015 but his real claim to fame is that in 2012 he hit a century for his school, Harrow, at Lord’s vs. Eton.

2: Karun Phorgat – the smile says it all, a 6 for for the Reserves. Karun, “Special K” to the Reserves for whom he is the spearhead, is originally from India but has played Premier Grade cricket in Melbourne. This is his first season with Parnell and is making his mark with his enthusiasm and, particularly, his quick . He is the Reserves leading wicket taker with figures of 4/37, 4/50, 4/31 and 1/58 before getting this first 5 for!

Men’s Premier Grade: Trophy – Major 2 Day Championship Round 4. 26 Nov & 3 Dec. Parnell vs. Howick Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore Pk 1.

PARNELL 154/7 dec. (36.2) Tim McIntosh 46 (97), Tom Talbot 18 (30), Ben Horne 55 (51) M McClenaghan 2/50 (8), B Walsh 3/18 (6) To be continued next Saturday For full details of Day 1. go to https://www.crichq.com/#matches/454981/2nd_innings

DAY 1. Another good toss for Skipper Dave to win and Howick Pak. were asked to bat first. Without Black Caps’ de Grandhomme and Munro and Aces’ Grobelaar they still were still able to field another Black Cap, and IPL star, Mitch McClenaghan, and be lead by former Ace Andrew de Boorder and current Aces’ squad members Glynn Phillips and Shawn Hicks.

Nevertheless, reputations meant nothing to our attack – Phillips was bowled by Josh with the total at 14 and he then had de Boorder caught behind for 10 and the total 33. Ganesh then took the ball and dismissed Hick for 16 – 66/3. Howick Pak then continued to make heavy weather of batting. continued to fall – another two to Josh who finished with the excellent figures of 4/29. Ganesh picked up 3 and was most economical whilst Rav did the hard yards and the Skipper wove a spell. A couple of outstanding catches helped – Tim McIntosh held one low in the slips and ‘keeper Ben held another stunner. Only sad factor was that, having had them 8/108, the last 2 wickets added 43 runs but to dismiss no. 2 on the Table for just 151 would have been an acceptable outcome at the time of the toss.

McClenaghan, back from injury, opened their attack and snared Ben Rainger early. Tom Talbot joined Tim, displayed his shots and hit a confident 18 before being caught behind off Botadra, the other opening bowler. Enter Ben Horne who took to their attack and he and Tim quickly brought our score from 41 to 133. This was when Tim was bowled by Walsh trying to lift the rate further – very commendable object to gain the lead before stumps. However, Ben followed only 4 runs later and we then lost Mitch, Tom Hills and Jesse all in a final scurry for the six 1st innings points. An excellent day for Parnell dampened, in the eyes of our Coach, somewhat by the opposition capturing those wickets in the closing stages. Those last 5 wickets gained Howick Pak. 1.25 bonus points and keeps them in the Trophy hunt. Having gained the lead just before stumps, we declared rather than push for more batting points (0.01 per run) or gift further bowling points (0.25 per wicket). Ball is in Howick Pak.’s court – Day 2. should be fascinating with both sides seeking an outright

Our attack - Josh 4/29, Ganesh 3/20 and David 2/27 – restricted HP to only 151, great work!

Tom Talbot (left), Tim McIntosh and Ben Horne, with sound, confident batting countered the threat of Black Cap Mitch McClenagha

Editor’s Note: Howick Pakuranga started the game in 2nd place (30.46) to us (34.36) in the Hedley Howarth Trophy. This despite us having 3 x 1st innings wins to Howick Pak’s 1 win. By close of play on Day 1. we had extended our points lead from 3.90 to 10.68 (ie 6 + 2.50 bowling + 1.54 batting = 10.04 but Howick Pak. earned 1.25 in capturing 5 wickets in 7 overs when we went from 133 to 154. Our lead could have been greater if we had not lost those late wickets – crucial, perhaps, when we reach the “business end” of the season. Remember Bonus Points will be a deciding issue in the Championship and we don’t want to be runner-up for a third time in four years!

Below, the Hedley Howarth Trophy points table at start of Day 1. At the end of play Parnell now has 44.40 points to Howick Pak.’s 33.72

To be continued next Saturday

SKIPPER TOM LANDRIGAN REPORTING ON ANOTHER OUTSTANDING DAY: The Reserves started their first home Two Dayer of the season last weekend at Shore Road No. 1. We won the toss and bowled first. We bowled and fielded brilliantly to have Eden Roskill all out for 106 within 35 overs. We were led by Karun who once again proved his dominance in the grade with figures of 6-43 off 14 overs – outstanding effort. Tom Urry also chipped in with 3-18 off 7 overs. After a tough start batting we saw ourselves 3-2 within 3 overs – Sam Varcoe and Simon Wood rebuilt nicely until Woody was out for 33. Varcoe was out for 44 a short time later which brought the Conradies to the crease. Some aggressive batting from the twins (including some towering maximums) saw them put on a 100 run partnership at a touch over 10 runs per over until Henk was out caught on the boundary after which we declared our innings at 206-6. Both Schalk and Henk scored their respective second 50’s for the season. Day Two will resume with Eden Roskill 20-0 overnight still 80 runs behind to make us bat again – the boys will be desperately pushing for a second outright in as many rounds.

Our pace attack Karun – 6/43 Tom Urry 3/18 And Billy Sanger

Celebration – a wicket to Tom Urry and a spinner -

Senior B2 Grade: Two Day Championship 26 Nov. & 3 Dec.. Parnell Thirds vs. Grafton United at Shore Rd 2a.

PARNELL 370/3 dec. Lalit Bose 219 (113), Callum Douglas 118* GRAFTON UNITED 150/10 To be continued next Saturday – scores to be confirmed

Highlight of the day was Lalit’s onslaught on the Grafton attack – devastating, as Craig’s photos below indicate. And batting right through, Callum’s 118* - a wonderful effort on his Senior debut for the Club. Skipper Jame Mulvey won the toss, elected to bat and Callum and Ben Aveyard opened. A sound start but Ben was then in a disputed decision – a bump ball? Player umpires – difficult and, to avoid dispute though still in doubt, Ben walked. Enter Lalit and the rest is history. Callum gave superb support and their 292 partnership for the 2nd wicket fell just 5 short of the Club record set in 2013/14.

1B Grade: 26 Nov. Parnell Kings vs. Ak Indian SC at Parrs Park 2a.

AISC 193/10 (37.5) Aaron 4/26, Arul 2/44, Sundar 2/22 PARNELL 195/9 (36.1) Abrar 100*, Sundar 21, Roy 16

RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 43 RUNS

CAPTAIN ROOPESH REPORTING: On a beautiful day for Cricket, Kings won the toss and decided to put the opponents to bat first. Pressure was on Kings as the opponents were unbeaten in the competition.

Batsmen goes for a wild swing the very first ball from Aaron. Intensions were very clear from the openers - go hard out at the bowlers. But he was up against an experienced campaigner like Aaron. Batsmen skied a slower one and was a easy take for Chak's calibre. Arul at the other end kept mixing his deliveries and was rewarded when the batsmen hit one straight to Sundar at point. The next two batsmen made sure they don't lose any more wickets till the break. They were compact and didn't take much risk. Scoring rate was just over 5. Roopesh's trick of getting Abrar to bowl after drinks paid off when the batsmen's off stump was disturbed by an in-dipper. Long standing partnership was broken. Just when Kings were looking to tighten the screws, opponents started to slog everything that was pitched up. They scored 35 quick runs. Aaron came in to bowl and got the much needed wicket. Vignesh was bowling a tight line and was hardly giving away any runs. He got his wicket when the batsmen tried to clear the boundary, only to find the safe hands of Chak. Aaron's wonderful form with the ball continued when he took two more wickets in his final over. Sownder bowled beautifully and had all the batsmen in trouble but was unlucky not to get a wicket. Sundar and Arul cleaned up the tail. Opponents were restricted to 193.

Kings had a disastrous start when Chak was caught behind in the first over. Abrar looked solid as usual and Praveen was rotating the strike with ease. In no time the pair added 40 runs together. Praveen was in two minds, when he was caught at point trying to cut the ball. Sownder was promoted up the order to repeat his last week's magic but his stumps were rattled by an in-swinger. Kings were struggling at 46 for 3. Roy joined Abrar in the middle and kept the opponents at bay. Abrar made batting look easy when he smashed couple of boundaries in an over. Roy supported Abrar well with one's, two's and an occasional boundary. Abrar's crisp cut through the point area bought his first half century of the season. Roy tried to clear the long on boundary but didn't have enough elevation and was held easily. Great partnership came to an end. Abrar and Roopesh added 20 runs together before the later nicked one to the slips in the last over before drinks. Half way through, Kings were 116/5 and the game was evenly poised. First ball after drinks Arul hit a full toss straight back to the bowler. Abrar was the lone man standing amidst the constant despair from the other end. He stamped the authority on the bowlers and was driving, punching and cutting the ball to every corner of the ground. Sundar looked confident and smashed 4 boundaries to take the pressure off Abrar. With 29 needed, Sundar went for an expansive drive through covers and missed the ball completely - got his middle stump off the ground. Vignesh hit a huge six over mid-wicket but didn't last long. Just 16 needed to win the game, Aaron's eye lit up when he saw a juicy half volley and went to clear the long on boundary but ended up as an easy catch. Abrar couldn't believe his eyes on the other end. 15 required with one wicket in hand. It was a tense moment in Kings camp. AJ ensured he gave full support to Abrar by not fishing outside off stump. Abrar was cool as cucumber and kept the strike most of the times. Opponents were happy to give single to Abrar of the first ball of an over and AJ had to survive 5 balls. When the ball flew of an edge of AJ's bat, Kings team had their hearts in the mouth. 5 runs to win and Abrar was on strike. Abrar finished it off in a grand style by launching the bowler over long-on for a big six, and completing his century. This ranks as one of Abrar's finest performances till date.

Best Performer for Kings: Abrar [Not surprising – great work Abrar! To win by 1 wicket and bring up your ton is storybook stuff! Editor]

PARNELL 121/10 AISC 121/1 RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 9 WICKETS

ELLIOT HUMPHRIES REPORTING After winning the toss against one player, the 4ths decided to bat. Stacked with quality batsmen 300 was on the cards. However, both openers were soon walking back to the sheds. Gavin Poole and Luke O'Toole began to consolidate but both fell while in the 20's. From there the collapse was on. Wickets tumbled and the skipper promoted to 11 was left stranded on 0*. In the end we were skittled for 121. Things still managed to get worse as the opposition chased it down within 20 overs only 1 down. Gav took the only wicket hobbling in off 5 steps while being sledged from the sidelines.

Presidents’ Grade: 26 Nov. Parnell vs. Hibiscus Coast at Glover Park 4A

RESULT: PARNELL & HIBISCUS COAST TIED

A TIE – extraordinary. All blame, of course descended on Gormo who, when umpiring, called ONE SHORT in the concluding stages and so “caused” the Tie. But what about the buffer who neglected to ground his bat? Did he run out of puff? The pitch is 22 yards and, to score a run, that ground must be covered! Made for an interesting rehydration discussion – many Reports were expounded but have never since materialised on your Editor’s desk. The only conclusion to be reached, therefore, is that Gormo be nominated “Umpire of the Year” – at least we know he is impartial in his judgment.

The Juniors

Match Report – Parnell Cricket Club vs Grafton United Cricket Club November 20th 2016 - Hosted by Parnell CC at Thos. Bloodworth Park., Martyn Wilson Field and Orakei Domain Jeremy Boucher, Junior Chairman, reporting:

Our first PCC Representative game took place in great early summer – sunny and windy - conditions on the 20th November. Our teams played home games from Orakei through to Bloodworth with the 6a game taking place at the St Kents ground. The 1st Rep fixture is always a bit of a lottery in that there normally hasn’t been much team training or much of an opportunity to build a strong team dynamic. Coaches are faced with trying to bring all the players together into a team unit in record time and at the same time as their weekend club coaches are trying to do.

Despite those challenges, it is pleasing to report that PCC had a strong 1st outing against what is ordinarily a good strong set of opposition teams, coming away with a 6 - 3 victory. I take this opportunity on behalf of the parents of those players involved and on behalf of the club to thank those volunteer parent coaches who stood up to lead / coach for the Rep teams this year. A big thank you to you all. Without your effort and passion, we wouldn’t be able to participate in this programme. Some more detailed commentary is below but the headlines behind the 6-3 victory are that PCC did well in all grades with the exception of Grade 3 where we lost convincingly to a very strong set of GUCC players. Our 6B team also had a loss on the Bloodworth field where GUCC performed well.

Grade 7

Result: PCC won by 34 runs. - PCC won the toss and elected to bat scoring 240/8 (exactly a run a ball), with 8 boys scoring over 20 runs each (top six were Sam Clegg 36, Jonty Willis 31, Cole Osborne 26, Cameron Fletcher 25, Josh Olliver 25, Tom Lindberg 25). - GUCC’s first 4 batsmen accumulated 150 runs but the PCC bowling was tight at the start and, even though we didn't take many wickets, it meant GUCC were strangled and the equation of 72 from 6 at the end was too much. - GUCC reached 206/6 (Jonty Willis, Harry Cullen-Hieatt, Tom Lindberg, Cole Osborne, the best of the bowlers). Outstanding fielding by Jack Wright contributed to 2 run outs. - Player of the Day was Jonty Willis for his all-round contribution.

Grade 6 A Result: PCC won by 6 wickets with 1.5 overs to play. - GUCC batted first and scored 126/5 from their 30 overs - PCC responded in a measured fashion to ease home in the 28th over with 6 wickets to spare. 127/4 (28.1 overs) Our top scording batsmen were Pawan Kharel and James Nelson who both retired on 33 and 30 respectively. Our bowling was also strong with Jeremy Ooi taking 2 for 16 from his spell. - Player of the Day was Pawan Kharel

Grade 6 B Result: GUCC won by 36 runs - GUCC batted first and set a strong 141/5 off their 30 overs. Cbe Derber was our best bowler with figure of 2 for 13 but it wasn’t enough to keep the GUCC total down to a respectable level. - PCC then stepped up to bat but the RRR was too much for our team to contend with. Credit should go to our players for batting out their full 30 overs and Tom Harrison retired on 30 runs, but ultimately managed a total of 115 / 9, falling short of the required total.

Grade 5 A Results: PCC won by about 60 runs. - PCC batted first posting 170 / 3 off our 30 overs. Dylan, Jack R, Charlie, Ashan and Jack H all scored 25 or more and the batting was generally of a high standard. The team played straight early, conserved wickets and then attacked well in the final 10 overs. We felt 135 would be a competitive total on the Martyn Wilson field so we were happy going into the interval on our 170 / 3 total.

- GUCC started solidly but struggled against the quality bowling and all-around fielding display. Several bowlers took multiple wickets, with Alexander at one point having a chance for a hat-trick. Tim, Astin and Jack R all bowled with good pace, and our spinners and medium pacers were accurate and took regular wickets. The , Charlie, took a memorable diving outfield catch also, and Fred pulled off a nice caught & bowled. GUCC ended the match about 7 or 8 wickets down, and about 60 runs short of the target. - Player of the Day was Jack Ricketts for his excellent all-around performance.

Grade 5 B Result: PCC won by 5 wickets. - Grafton batted first and scored 151 / 5 from 30 overs. Finn Priddy took 2 for 12 with some excellent straight bowling and received a certificate for his bowling performance. Luca Roberton and Ben Wigmore also really troubled the batsmen with their bowling and both took wickets. - PCC then chased down the total comfortably with 2 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hand. Zac Nathan, Tom O’Donnell and William Lawrence-Vaivai all batted very well in chasing these runs down - Player of the Day was Zac Nathan for this 31 runs.

Grade 4 GOLD

Result: PCC won by 114 runs. - PCC scored heavily with 167 runs in total from their 25 overs. Batting was excellent with a strong middle order partnership between Oliver Kittle and Sam Bashford proving to be particularly destructive with 75 runs from 5 overs! Sam Bashford (37 no), Oliver Kittle (31 no) and Tom Boucher (18 no) were the pick of the batsmen. - GUCC played well against our strong bowling attack but couldn’t score the runs as our bowlers really did excel. Harry Waite (3 overs for -9 runs) Marco Alpe (3 overs for -8 runs) Tom Boucher (3 overs for -3 runs) and Oliver Kittle (2 overs for -1 run) all deserve special mention for negative runs from their spells of bowling. - Player of the Day was Marco Alpe for this terrific bowling and strong wicket keeping.

Grade 4 RED

Result: PCC won by 54 runs. - PCC scored 130 runs from our 25 overs with Tom Nelson and Varnan Pasupati scoring strongly as part of the effort. Varnan Pasupati (28no), Sam Jancys (22no), William Barclay (15no) and Tom Nelson (11no) were the pick of the batsmen. - GUCC started strongly but the bowling was too strong for them. 7 players conceded an average of 3 runs an over and Sam Jancys delivered an excellent spell of 3 overs for 3 wickets and -3 runs. Perhaps best of all was the quality of the fielding with some excellent catching from Fletcher Muthu (2), a diving effort from Guy at Gully and a splendid fully stretched catch from Varnan. There were 5 run outs (Ishan deZoyza 2, and 1 r/o each from Fletcher,Tom and Varnan) in total. GUCC scored 76 runs in total. - Player of the Day was Sam Jancys for this bowling spell and contribution with the bat.

Grade 3 GOLD Result: GUCC won by 36 runs. - PCC scored a total of 72 runs with all batsmen contributing but not contributing strongly enough. Freddy and Aidan top scored with a partnership of 24. - GUCC responded by scoring a total of 108 runs to win comfortably. Our bowlers managed to take only the 4 wickets through the day illustrating plenty of room for improvement at this level.

Grade 3 RED Result: GUCC won by 63 runs. - PCC scored a total of 84 runs with all batsmen contributing but not contributing strongly enough. Koby and Joshua equal top scored with runs of 15 each. Rohan did well with a total of 12 runs. - GUCC responded by scoring a total of 147 runs to win comfortably. Our bowlers managed to take only the 5 wickets with 2 of them coming from Oscar. Onwards and upwards

MERV WALLACE DAY – Sat. 17 December

Luncheon to Celebrate “ Day” To be held in the Mike Simpson Lounge, 32 Shore Road, Remuera, Saturday, 17 December 2016 – gather from 11.00am for Noon.

Merv, if he had not died 9 years ago, would be celebrating his 100th birthday on 19 December 2016. Merv joined Parnell CC as a 15 year old in the 1932-33 season. Almost immediately he became a mainstay of our batting, quickly attained selection for Auckland and then NZ. For NZ he toured England in 1937, when he topped the batting averages (1641 at 41.02), and again in 1949 when he scored 970 in May and, overall, 1722 at 49.20. Merv captained NZ vs. South Africa in ‘53/54. In March 1956 he was Coach to the NZ team that won it’s first Test after 26 unsuccessful years. All that is nothing compared to his contribution to the Parnell CC – for 60+ years as player, captain and then Patron – Merv was superb. A brilliant coach and mentor to the young, we treasure our memories of Merv and take this opportunity to celebrate his “Ton” with Vonnie, Adele and Greg and other members of the Wallace family.
