Weekly Update Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.112 : 26 Nov. Winning Cricket & Sun! Heroes of the Weekend: Callum Douglas – 118* Lalit Bose – 219 off 113 balls Karun Phorgat – 6 for 43 1 & 2: Callum Douglas and Lalit Bose – for our Thirds vs. Grafton United, Callum scored 118* on his Parnell Senior debut and Lalit hit a colossal 219 off only 113 balls.Their 2nd wicket partnership of 292 falls just short of the Parnell Lower Grade Record for that wicket – 297 set by R Bracefield and J Wallace in 2013/14. Callum comes to us from the King’s College 1st XI, for whom he scored a ton last month, and he has previously represented Parnell in EDCA Age Group teams and Auckland Under 17s. Lalit arrived a fortnight ago from UK having recently graduated from Durham University. He represented the University in a 1st Class match, vs. Warwickshire, in 2015 but his real claim to fame is that in 2012 he hit a century for his school, Harrow, at Lord’s vs. Eton. 2: Karun Phorgat – the smile says it all, a 6 for for the Reserves. Karun, “Special K” to the Reserves for whom he is the spearhead, is originally from India but has played Premier Grade cricket in Melbourne. This is his first season with Parnell and is making his mark with his enthusiasm and, particularly, his quick bowling. He is the Reserves leading wicket taker with figures of 4/37, 4/50, 4/31 and 1/58 before getting this first 5 for! Men’s Premier Grade: Hedley Howarth Trophy – Major 2 Day Championship Round 4. 26 Nov & 3 Dec. Parnell vs. Howick Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore Pk 1. HOWICK PAKURANGA 151 (62.1) B Walsh 32 (85), R Botadra 36* (86) Mike Ravlic 14 2 49 1 Josh Fisher 10.1 2 29 4 Tom Hills 5 2 17 0 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 10 3 20 3 Dave Goddard 18 6 27 2 Mitch McCann 5 3 4 0 PARNELL 154/7 dec. (36.2) Tim McIntosh 46 (97), Tom Talbot 18 (30), Ben Horne 55 (51) M McClenaghan 2/50 (8), B Walsh 3/18 (6) To be continued next Saturday For full details of Day 1. go to https://www.crichq.com/#matches/454981/2nd_innings DAY 1. Another good toss for Skipper Dave to win and Howick Pak. were asked to bat first. Without Black Caps’ de Grandhomme and Munro and Aces’ Grobelaar they still were still able to field another Black Cap, and IPL star, Mitch McClenaghan, and be lead by former Ace Andrew de Boorder and current Aces’ squad members Glynn Phillips and Shawn Hicks. Nevertheless, reputations meant nothing to our attack – Phillips was bowled by Josh with the total at 14 and he then had de Boorder caught behind for 10 and the total 33. Ganesh then took the ball and dismissed Hick for 16 – 66/3. Howick Pak then continued to make heavy weather of batting. Wickets continued to fall – another two to Josh who finished with the excellent figures of 4/29. Ganesh picked up 3 and was most economical whilst Rav did the hard yards and the Skipper wove a spell. A couple of outstanding catches helped – Tim McIntosh held one low in the slips and ‘keeper Ben held another stunner. Only sad factor was that, having had them 8/108, the last 2 wickets added 43 runs but to dismiss no. 2 on the Table for just 151 would have been an acceptable outcome at the time of the toss. McClenaghan, back from injury, opened their attack and snared Ben Rainger early. Tom Talbot joined Tim, displayed his shots and hit a confident 18 before being caught behind off Botadra, the other opening bowler. Enter Ben Horne who took to their attack and he and Tim quickly brought our score from 41 to 133. This was when Tim was bowled by Walsh trying to lift the rate further – very commendable object to gain the lead before stumps. However, Ben followed only 4 runs later and we then lost Mitch, Tom Hills and Jesse all in a final scurry for the six 1st innings points. An excellent day for Parnell dampened, in the eyes of our Coach, somewhat by the opposition capturing those wickets in the closing stages. Those last 5 wickets gained Howick Pak. 1.25 bonus points and keeps them in the Trophy hunt. Having gained the lead just before stumps, we declared rather than push for more batting points (0.01 per run) or gift further bowling points (0.25 per wicket). Ball is in Howick Pak.’s court – Day 2. should be fascinating with both sides seeking an outright Our attack - Josh 4/29, Ganesh 3/20 and David 2/27 – restricted HP to only 151, great work! Tom Talbot (left), Tim McIntosh and Ben Horne, with sound, confident batting countered the threat of Black Cap Mitch McClenagha Editor’s Note: Howick Pakuranga started the game in 2nd place (30.46) to us (34.36) in the Hedley Howarth Trophy. This despite us having 3 x 1st innings wins to Howick Pak’s 1 win. By close of play on Day 1. we had extended our points lead from 3.90 to 10.68 (ie 6 + 2.50 bowling + 1.54 batting = 10.04 but Howick Pak. earned 1.25 in capturing 5 wickets in 7 overs when we went from 133 to 154. Our lead could have been greater if we had not lost those late wickets – crucial, perhaps, when we reach the “business end” of the season. Remember Bonus Points will be a deciding issue in the Championship and we don’t want to be runner-up for a third time in four years! Below, the Hedley Howarth Trophy points table at start of Day 1. At the end of play Parnell now has 44.40 points to Howick Pak.’s 33.72 TEAM P W L T D WKTS TAKEN RUNS FOR PTS BONUS PTS TOTALPOINTS 1 Parnell 3 3 0 0 0 29 911 18.0 16.36 34.36 2 Howick Pak, 3 1 0 0 2 34 996 12.0 18.46 30.46 3 Takapuna 3 2 1 0 0 41 684 12.0 17.09 29.09 4 Papatoetoe 3 2 1 0 0 35 822 12.0 16.97 28.97 5 Akld University 3 1 1 0 1 28 996 9.0 16.96 25.96 6 East Coast Bays 3 0 3 0 0 39 1083 0.0 20.58 20.58 7 Suburbs NL 3 1 2 0 0 27 634 6.0 13.09 19.09 8 Cornwall 3 0 2 0 1 25 673 3.0 12.98 15.98 Men’s Premier Reserve Grade: Two Day Minor Championship Round 2. 26 Nov. & 3 Dec. (39.5) Simon Wood 33, Sam Varcoe 44, Henk & Schalk Conradie 50+ each To be continued next Saturday SKIPPER TOM LANDRIGAN REPORTING ON ANOTHER OUTSTANDING DAY: The Reserves started their first home Two Dayer of the season last weekend at Shore Road No. 1. We won the toss and bowled first. We bowled and fielded brilliantly to have Eden Roskill all out for 106 within 35 overs. We were led by Karun who once again proved his dominance in the grade with figures of 6-43 off 14 overs – outstanding effort. Tom Urry also chipped in with 3-18 off 7 overs. After a tough start batting we saw ourselves 3-2 within 3 overs – Sam Varcoe and Simon Wood rebuilt nicely until Woody was out for 33. Varcoe was out for 44 a short time later which brought the Conradies to the crease. Some aggressive batting from the twins (including some towering maximums) saw them put on a 100 run partnership at a touch over 10 runs per over until Henk was out caught on the boundary after which we declared our innings at 206-6. Both Schalk and Henk scored their respective second 50’s for the season. Day Two will resume with Eden Roskill 20-0 overnight still 80 runs behind to make us bat again – the boys will be desperately pushing for a second outright in as many rounds. Our pace attack Karun – 6/43 Tom Urry 3/18 And Billy Sanger Celebration – a wicket to Tom Urry and a spinner - Senior B2 Grade: Two Day Championship 26 Nov. & 3 Dec.. Parnell Thirds vs. Grafton United at Shore Rd 2a. PARNELL 370/3 dec. Lalit Bose 219 (113), Callum Douglas 118* GRAFTON UNITED 150/10 To be continued next Saturday – scores to be confirmed Highlight of the day was Lalit’s onslaught on the Grafton attack – devastating, as Craig’s photos below indicate. And batting right through, Callum’s 118* - a wonderful effort on his Senior debut for the Club. Skipper Jame Mulvey won the toss, elected to bat and Callum and Ben Aveyard opened. A sound start but Ben was then in a disputed decision – a bump ball? Player umpires – difficult and, to avoid dispute though still in doubt, Ben walked. Enter Lalit and the rest is history. Callum gave superb support and their 292 partnership for the 2nd wicket fell just 5 short of the Club record set in 2013/14. LALIT’S ONSLAUGHT: AND CALLUM DOUGLAS – 118* IN CLASSIC STYLE: Programme Till Christmas Premier Grade (Saturdays except for : Sunday play Highlighted, Wednesday T20s in red) 26 Nov.

I guess the summer of 2019-20 will always be remembered as the season that ended early due to Covid- 19. Looking back now at March it all happened so quickly and it was with a sense of great disappointment that we had to cancel all our end of year prizegivings, miss out on the last two weekends of cricket and lock up the Indoor Training Centre for all of April. Now we can only hope that everything has settled down enough to allow us to enjoy a full season in 2020-21 and that all our members are healthy and safe. However, it was still another great year for Suburbs.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.
