CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The 2014-15 Season was an outstanding one for the Parnell Cricket Club and this Report will thank the many who contributed to these successes:

Shore Road Development The redevelopment of Shore Road is almost complete. The major drainage works and corrections, and initial grass seeding are now finished. The second seeding is to commence early spring and, as planned, we should be back on our home ground in January 2016. A second artificial pitch was slightly delayed due to the consent process but has now been laid. Construction of the new seven lane outdoor net complex is well underway and is scheduled to be operational by October this year.

Thank you to Desley Simpson, Kit Parkinson and the Orakei Local Board for their ongoing support of Parnell Cricket and our community.

Results Parnell Cricket Club has once again enjoyed some great successes in the 2014/15 season, arguably the highlight being our victory in the Premier Grade Two Day Championship securing the Hedley Howarth Trophy – an achievement not seen since the summer of 1965/66. To Ian Trott and David Goddard – congratulations and thank you for your leadership and commitment. To the team – fantastic, well done.

6. We were also recipient of a number of awards at the Auckland Cricket Prizegiving:  Ian Trott for Coach of the Year . This is the second time Ian has received this accolade in his eight year tenure at Parnell.  Tim McIntosh – received the Laurie Schnauer Trophy , Player of the Year as nominated by his peers and also the ACA Award for most Premier Grade runs.  Spirit of Cricket Award to our Premier XI - for the team deemed to have played in the true spirit of cricket. Parnell was the inaugural winner in 2009/10 and, in the six years that it has been awarded, we have won it no fewer than three times!  Rod Smith – WN Carson Memorial Cup for outstanding work as a volunteer administrator.  Four Junior teams won their ACA Championships: Boys: Year 6A – Parnell Fleming and Year 6 – Parnell Ryder Girls: Junior Hearts U12A 2014 – Parnell Roses and Future Hearts U14A 2014 – Parnell Diamonds

Representation  secured an Aces’ Contract and, late in the season, bowled outstandingly well in the last few games.  was again selected for Hong Kong and received the further honour of being appointed Vice Captain for the forthcoming World T20 Qualifying Tournament Others selected for provincial representation were:  Auckland Under 17s: Will St John Auckland Under 19s: Henry King and Ben Rainger

Membership Parnell Cricket is in very good heart financially but there is a challenge in that our playing numbers are down both in Junior and Senior Teams. Junior numbers for this season were at 570, down from 650 in the previous year and the priority for the upcoming season is to return to mid six hundreds. Plans are underway to focus on our traditional feeder schools – Kings, St Kentigern, Victoria Ave and Parnell where we have seen a drop off in cricket numbers. Strategies are being looked at to address the social senior competition. Either relaunching the business house competition or further develop our association with Last Man Stands.

Peter Badley Parnell CC Memorial Trust With the excellent financial result achieved this year, the Board has resolved to repay $60,000 to the Peter Badley Trust (via the Remuera Parnell Sports Community Trust). These funds were granted by the Peter Badley Trust to complete the construction of the Centre. The Board had felt that when it was financially prudent to do so we would repay monies lent to ensure the Peter Badly Trust capital base is maintained for the future betterment of cricket development at Parnell Cricket. This has been noted in the audited accounts.

Thank Yous To our key commercial partners Insight Ascot Radiology and Players Sports – thank you for your valued contribution which enable us to offer the best cricket experience for our players. Thank you to our team Steve Hurdley, Bryan Haggitt, Ruth Thiekle, Ian Trott, Jonathan McInroy, Simon Herbst and all our Junior Coaches for their day to day management of Parnell Cricket. There is an extraordinary amount of work and effort that goes into running a club of our size and the management of the TJC. Your commitment and energy are much appreciated by the Board and Parnell Cricket members.

Thank you to the many volunteers across Parnell Cricket who contribute hours of time and effort to ensure the success of our Club. We are very grateful for your commitment and energy.

Retiring Board Members This evening there are four board members retiring – Bryan Haggitt, Tom Bassett, Phil Horne and me. Bryan Haggitt – what can I say except Bryan is one in a million, he has the most extraordinary knowledge of cricket and Parnell Cricket Club and is the legendary author of our newsletter. The good news is even though Bryan is retiring from the Board he will still be a key member of the team. Tom Bassett – Tom was shoulder tapped to take on the Junior Chair role in the terrible circumstance of Paul Buntings passing. He took it on and has given so much time and effort to the club, highlighted by being awarded the NZC Volunteer Award for the Best Youth Initiative for the Parent Coaching Manual - a practical resource for Volunteer Coaches. From Junior Chair he took on the role of Treasurer and in true engineering style has set up the most efficient accounts template for PCC and reporting model for the TJC. Phil Horne. I asked Phil to sit on the PCC Board a few years ago now – his knowledge has been absolutely invaluable as has his ability to connect to the cricket community. In addition Phil just gets in and helps – as our players will know his fielding sessions are infamous!

We were delighted that a number of current members across the club have put their names forward to stand for the Board. I would like to thank Craig Presland, Venu Bhamidipaty, Greg James and Dominic Drumm for stepping up and putting themselves forward for Board roles.

7. I am standing down as Chairman of the Board this evening. I can do so in the knowledge that Parnell Cricket is in great shape, and the few challenges we have will be met by a committed team of volunteers and management. We are a terrific club because we are a family of volunteers and it is the family connection we need to continue to foster. I started my association with Parnell as a mother and then a volunteer – and it has been a wonderful association for our family. Cricket is a great team sport that fosters friendships that last lifetimes not only for players but parents. To my fellow Board Members thank you very much for your support over the years and for your contribution to Parnell Cricket Club.

OBITUARY

R.J. (ROGER) BOOKER died May 2015

Roger Booker was an essential force in the Eastern Districts CC Senior Team of the mid 1950s – the equivalent of our Premier side today. Roger was a cheerful, optimistic cricketer – an opening bowler of brisk pace, he was our attack’s spearhead prior to Johnny Hayes returning from Canterbury. Roger took a long run and, characteristic of fast bowlers then, had a massive drag and was forever ripping the toe from his right boot. This despite him wearing a steel cap on that boot.

An excellent club man who participated regularly in working bees at Hobson Park, Roger was Club Captain in 1955-56, just prior to his departure for the Bay of Plenty where he became Headmaster of a Te Puke school.

ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP Semi Final, New Zealand vs.

A momentus two months with games right around the country. The Black Caps, led by Brendon McCullum, were invincible at home, succumbing only to Australia in the Final at the MCG.

For six weeks the Black Caps stunned their critics – Guptill hit an astonishing double , Taylor ran into excellent form, Southee humiliated England and Vettori did the same to Australia at . Anderson showed mouch more than just promise and the Skipper was just outstanding with his aggressive, challenging leadership.

Previously unheard of in an ODI – Boult the bowler and McCullum setting him a field with 3 slips and 2 gullies

Corey Anderson hitting out Elliott has hit a 6 to gain the win with aball to spare

No one who had the good fortune to be at Eden Park for the Semi Final, New Zealand vs. South Africa will ever forget the occasion. De Villiers and Miller enabled South Africa to set a most commendable target and we set chase. McCullum led the way, Taylor held on, some stumbles but Anderson came to the rescue along with a truly sensational effort from Elliott who hit Steyn for 6 off the penultimate ball – the capacity crowd at Eden Park roared and rocked, quite magnificent! And cricket found a great many more supporters!

8. HOSTING OVERSEAS VISITORS – FEBRUARY 2015

From Australia – the Australian Over 60s

New Zealand Over 60s vs. Australia Over 60s Thos. Bloodworth Park hosted two games against the Australian O60s lead by Stirling Hammet – vs. Parnell and then an international. For NZ, Parnell stalwarts Roger Harvey and Mike Simpson made their international debuts, Rod Smith resumed his (he represented E. Malaysia vs. Brunei a wee time ago) and evergreen Ross Morgan came back as a youthful 74 year old. The result was not broadcastable!

At the conclusion of the international, following a formal Dinner, the Aussies insisted on singing their song.

And the Hong Kong CC:

19. JUNIOR CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Spirit of Cricket Healthy Most pleasingly a friendly and cooperative spirit accompanied each of our junior teams throughout the 2014/15 season. It is always a great delight to see and hear boys and girls beaming with pride and squealing with joy while they go about their cricket. Especially important is respect for the spirit of the game and for teammates and opposition alike. I am thrilled to report that our youngsters represented the Club, without exception, enthusiastically and with great politeness.

Club Mantra – Equal Opportunity An initiative of your junior committee last season was the Club Mantra. Equal opportunity for all. This underpins what we are striving for amongst the juniors at Parnell cricket. At its heart is the goal of ensuring that all players have an opportunity to have a go, regardless of ability. Coaches were encouraged, and indeed instructed, to embrace the Club Mantra. It is difficult for coaches to apply this mantra in all cases as it is not built in science and instead entails delicate and determined choices. There is still some way to go to achieve perfection, to the extent it is possible, in this area but the Club made huge strides forwards. Junior sports in general have identified a direct correlation between this philosophy and each of the boys' and girls' enjoyment in games and in these respects I think we saw the benefits of the Club Mantra in the smiles on their faces.

Team Selections The philosophy of equal opportunity for all comes at the cost of not winning games that might otherwise be won. Your junior committee is well aware of that but considers that players' welfare and opportunity both to develop and to shine is more important than winning games. This same thinking underlies the basis on which we select teams (representative teams excepted). A conscious effort is made to ensure that all teams are of equal strength and also are truly "club" teams and not merely composites of boys and girls from the same school. The Club considers this is in the best interests of all. It gives the lesser skilled players the opportunity to learn off the better players and elevate their own skills. It puts the better players under pressure to perform. Without mixing up talent amongst the teams, pressure on the better players would be absent as these boys and girls may rely on other quality players to recover any failure on their part.

There are always exceptions to this philosophy, as in Grade 7 this season where for the first time in my living memory we fielded 3 premier teams. The decision to do so was made with the aim of increasing the number of boys who were able to benefit from the extended playing time and opportunity to apply their skills against better quality players. While this undoubtedly weakened the playing strength of our Grade 7 premier teams, all 3 teams performed well with 2 of them qualifying for the championship round and the third narrowly missing out on doing so.

Player Numbers Player numbers were down this season by about 70. That has occupied the thoughts of your committee all season. Much effort has gone into identifying the reasons for it. No single factor explains it nor was player number reduction evident only in one or two grades. Nevertheless, the committee has worked earnestly to redress the issue for next season and hopefully this will result in past year player numbers being restored.

Getting the Basics Right One of our 2 principal efforts to restoring player numbers has been to endeavour to get the "on field" experiences right. The Club Mantra delivers a big part of this, team selection processes, particularly for premier and representative teams are also a big factor. Likewise grading as between A and B grades. Consultation with members on these issues has been wide and policies have been, and continue to be, refined which we hope will rid parents and children of any bug bears about them next season. These endeavours will be communicated to members in advance of next season so that members can obtain clear expectations about them.

In school pro coaching Our second principal effort at restoring player numbers is greater direct liaison with our key catchment schools – Kings, St Kents, Victoria Ave Primary, Parnell District School, Remuera Primary, Remuera Intermediate, St Michaels, Meadowbank Primary and many others. We are doing so by utilising our strong professional coaching team and providing coaching directly into the schools, working in with the sports directors there. Dominic Drumm has played a lead role in this. Big thanks to him for his efforts.

Professional Coaching We remain blessed with quality professional coaches, led by the peerless Ian Trott. In addition Jonathan McInroy and Simon Herbst will be well known to all Parnell members by now, the Club having been most fortunate to have benefitted from their expertise for an extended period. Others in turn have supported them, notably Joe Gray now back in his native Scotland and our many youth coaches.

20. Rep Cricket Cricket World Cup curtailed the rep program to only two full club fixtures. These were against University, won 7 matches to 2 by Parnell and against Cornwall, won by Cornwall 5 matches to 3. Pleasingly, against Cornwall Parnell won the 4A, 6A and 7A fixtures, and only narrowly losing it in 5A.

Ground shortages due to the rescheduled club games on account of the CWC Auckland games meant no other games were possible, other than the Grade 2 and 3 annual fixture with University, for the Bert Sufcliffe cup also won by Parnell.

Our representative convenor this season was Catherine Sandelin. The role this season was anything but straight forward and she was painstakingly patient and dedicated. A big thank you to you.

Special Mention Special mention is made of the following. First, Emma Irwin (aged 10) was selected for the Eastern Districts under 15 girls' team. This team played in a tournament against the other Auckland areas prior to Christmas. Emma was subsequently selected in the Auckland under 15 girls' team, the only Parnell player to do so. Likewise, congratulations to Will St John, selected in the Auckland under 17s and Ben Rainger and Henry King, selected in the Auckland under 19s.

Secondly, centuries for Jack Coman (117) for EDCA in the year 11 District Tournament and Tom Lindberg.

Thirdly, winners of the Auckland Grade 6 premier competition were Team Ryder, coached by Craig Presland.

Fourthly, winners of the Auckland Grade 6A competition were Team Fleming, coached by Jamie Sandelin.

Fifth, the under 15A girls won an ACA pennant for the pre-Christmas competition – coached by Andrew Barker.

Finally, winners of the Buxton Trophy and the Bloodworth Trophy respectively were James Hari and Nikkith Perera. The Buxton Trophy is awarded in Grade 8 to a player who has demonstrated the true meaning of team spirit, fair play and commitment. It is awarded to a top cricketer who has always been a role model for his peers and younger cricketers alike. The Bloodworth Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding cricketer in Grade 8.

Eastern Districts Parnell, University and Grafton together comprise a district, Eastern Districts, that annually participates in tournament play against other Auckland Districts. The others are Central, made up of Cornwall and Ellerslie, Western, Northern and Southern. The tournaments begin in Grade 7, extending up to under 18s and are played over the Christmas holiday period. They provide an excellent opportunity for leading cricketers to develop their games to the next level.

Historically Parnell players have had a significant presence in Eastern District teams, which have in turn featured well. This year was no exception.

District play does create a tension between competitive cricket and developing boys and girls. Parnell's view is that tournaments need to strike a balance between the two. Our representatives on the EDCA Committee are James Dudson and Murray Davis. A great vote of thanks to them for their tireless efforts here in what is a hugely time consuming and challenging job.

Girls Cricket There has been a huge resurgence in girls cricket at Parnell this season, led by Dominic Drumm. He has established a 3-5 year strategic plan for junior girls development. At its heart is targeting girls in our catchment area schools. To that end Dominic has been unrelenting in his efforts to advance girls cricket both generally and at Parnell. His enthusiasm is infectious and fully deserving of the success he has achieved.

This season we have fielded the following girls' teams: Girls under 10 softball, girls under 12 hardball and a girls under 14 hardball team. Younger girls play in the mixed grades 1-5 teams with the boys, giving the boys ample encouragement to perform.

Structure and Organisation The Club is structured by grade, to each of which is appointed a Grade Coordinator. It is these people who are predominantly the face of the Club. Their tasks are enormous and I would hope for the most part gratifying. These are volunteers in the extreme. Their role commences before the season starts, with communications to members around enrolments and then team selections. Their role is not finished until after prize giving at the end of the season. In between there is a lot of hard work, instant demands, criticism aplenty and a job that has this season been done magnificently by all. The Grade Coordinators were Grade 2 Janeen de Zoysa, Grade 3 Jeremy Boucher, Grade 4 Kyria Warren, Grade 5 Kate Wilson, Grade 6 Andrew Bell, Grade 7 Michele Sang, Grade 8 Phil Lindberg and Grade 9 Adam Mercer. Thank you to you all.

Coaches and Managers The Club cannot survive without its volunteer parents who play these vitally important roles. It is the coaches who are at practices week after week, usually first to arrive at games and last to leave, who plan during the week and mentor the boys and girls all while trying to develop each member of their team. It is a tireless task and the Club is greatly indebted to you. All coaches' efforts are appreciated but there are four whom I wish to make special mention for their "over and above" contributions. These are Murray Davis, James Dudson, Phil Lindberg and Craig Presland. There is huge talent and goodwill amongst these 4. Likewise managers play an invaluable role. A big thank you to each of you.

Acknowledgements Last season marked retirement for many of our long serving administrators and coaches now having completed their stint with Parnell Cricket. These include, Mike Benfell, Linda Benfell, Ian Mayhew, Leanne Mayhew, Richard Humphries and Donna Marris. A very big thank you from Parnell Cricket to each of you for your tireless and wonderful contributions. 21. Cricket in General/CWC One cannot comment on the season just finished without making mention of the Cricket World Cup and what it has done to in general.

The swagger and charisma of Brendan McCullum, guile of and , forthrightness and composure of and throughout the CWC has been inspiring. Cricket now generates a sparkle in the eyes of youngsters all across the country. There can be no greater joy to a cricket lover to observe that and to witness the swell of enthusiasm that now accompanies the game of cricket in New Zealand. To the Black Caps, our huge congratulations and heartfelt thanks.

Finally, a big vote of thanks to my committee, Tom Bassett, Paul Bracewell, Murray Davis, Dominic Drumm, James Dudson, Greg James, Rick Osborne, Catherine Sandelin and Jonathan Tierney. You have been a great pleasure to work with.

Ian and Donna lead a nomadic life. Donna has a daughter, Gayle, here in NZ and their son, Jonathan, remains in England.

ADAPTIVE CRICKET DAY

On 19 March we again ran a most successful Adaptive Cricket Day. This was in conjuction with the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Cricket, Sommerville Special School and the Pegasus Unit of Pakuranga College. Unfortunately the date couldn’t be fitted into the NZ Blind Cricket Association’s calendar but, hopefully, they will be back next year.

Most importantly, we again received huge help from Saintt Kentigern School and our own coaches, Jonathan McInroy, Simon Herbst and their assistants who gave their time gratis for the day.

As can be seen from the photos, some 80 special needs and blind youngsters took part with the help of 30 St Kentigern Year 8 lads who assisted with the various skill stations. The blind contingent set up in the TJC which was ideal and also took part in “table cricket”. Our own coaches, Jonathan and Simon , ran the skill stations outside and, with the St Kentigern boys, many of whom are Parnell lads, manned and assisted at the field stations. For many of the Sommerville students, this was the first time that they had been able to take part in any form of the game and the Saint Kentigern boys were hugely helpful in teaching the very basics of batting, bowling and fielding.

Special thanks to Duncan Grant of Saint Kentigern and to Brian Windler who very kindly donated the sausages for the sizzle. And to all others who were involved in this thoroughly enjoyable Day.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

PREMIER GRADE Captain: David Goddard Coach: Ian Trott

The Hedley Howarth Trophy Spirit of Cricket Award

Winner of the Hedley Howarth Trophy – the Major Two Day Championship, Finalist in the Championship and winner of Auckland Cricket’s Spirit of Cricket Award

Back row: George Harper jnr, Tom Talbot, Jocelyn Goodger (Scorer), Blue Hamel, Sam Varcoe, Mike Ravlic, Tom Hills, Mark Chapman, James Walsh, Bryan Haggitt (Manager) Front row: Kirk Bunting, Ian Trott (Coach),, David Goddard (Captain), Ben Horne, Tim McIntosh Absent: Sam Fasier, Jono Bennett, Ganesh Ratnasabapathy, Guy Harper, James Bevin 36.

For many, expectations for 2014/15 weren’t great – our Prems had been runner-up in all three championships the previous season but for the new, Will Brittain, Kirk Bunting, Ben Horne and Angus McLean – scorers of 3012 runs at an average of 31 in 2013/14 – had all departed. A huge shortfall! Tip Friday, after one season with us and the Aces, had also headed to Otago.

David Goddard, our new Skipper, was not at all dismayed. David, with Coach Ian, rallied the troops. Bowling was our strength – Lockie Ferguson and James Walsh bowled with pace and venom backed up by Mike Ravlic’s accuracy and movement off the track. Ganesh Ratnasabapathy developed well as the third/fourth seamer and Tom Hills and Jono Bennett, when fit, chimed in as well. Our spin progressed – Tim McIntosh, having taken 50 wickets in the Lincolnshire League, added bite and bounce, Mark Chapman’s left armers gave variety but it was Skipper Dave Goddard’s coming of age that really made a difference. Nobody collared his offies – not in the T20s, the One Dayers or in the 2 Day Championship. His 44 wickets at only 13.55 was quite outstanding – a brilliant foil to Lockie, Walshy. Rav and Ganesh.

The other outstanding feature, as it has been for some seasons, was the fielding. George Harper needs top commendation for taking the gloves through till Christmas. Then, in the New Year, Ben returned and showed what a superb ‘keeper he is and raised the bar even higher. From George’s sterling job, Ben created the gold standard – we were blessed!

In the slips, Tim McIntosh’s “buckets” held 22 catches – a Club record beating Kirk’s 19 taken in 2013/14. Tim’s presence all season made up for the departure of Angus McLean and Kirk’s early season unavailability. The Captain, too, was outstanding as was Chappy and George. Above all, the slip/gully cordon gave our quicks superb backing and added hugely to their effectiveness.

The batting - was patchy most of the season. Very dependant early season on our openers. Then, in the last weeks, innings of sheer brilliance from Mark, Tim and Ben. In between there was a certain shakiness which, at times, caused some fraying of the nerves. The talent was there but it was not always realised that occupation of the crease was paramount and impetuosity only led to trouble. Sam Varcoe excelled in the first half of the season and, once “in”, showed great stickability. Sam’s two centuries were invaluable to our success especially his ton against Suburbs NL when, having been put into bat, he and Tim put on over 200 for the 1st wicket. An opener through and through, Sam’s form fell away a little towards the end of the season - being shunted down the order on occasion rather unsettled him. However, this was great season for Sam – almost 600 runs at 35, quite outstanding!

Tim McIntosh – what a joy to have him all season! 978 runs culminating in his 168 in the final game against AUCC. Our gain was the Aces’ loss – Tim’s skills are undiminished and his experience and knowledge of the game was a vital factor in Parnell’s success. A true professional, one hopes that Tim regains an Auckland contract – he certainly deserves one as he gives wholehearted support to whatever team he plays for. Winning the Laurie Schnauer Trophy was fitting recognition of the respect that Tim earns. He is exploring coaching opportunities for the future and we wish Tim well in setting up clinics and in seeking other coaching options.

In the middle order, Mark Chapman was a tower of strength and his 130* against Takapuna in the penultimate game was a Championship winning knock – chasing 202 for victory nobody else topped 15! Tom Talbot didn’t quite realise the runs of the previous season but always looked the part. Here is hoping that, for both Mark and Tom, they fulfil their potential in 2015/16.

Then, post Christmas, Ben Horne and Kirk Bunting returned. Ben’s ‘keeping was truly inspirational and Kirk added wonderfully safe hands in the field. Neither scored as well as hoped, that is until the final game when Ben’s 184 was sensational.and, with Tim, sealed the Premiership. A ton of talent was obviously there but a certain brittleness remained. Tom Hills’ figures don’t show the value of two crucial knocks that he played to get the side out of strife and Ganesh, too, put his head down a couple of times to save the day. George Harper, Dave Goddard, Jono Bennett and James Bevin all promised heaps more runs but only Blue Hamel, dismissed just once in his 4 innings, fulfilled anything like expectations. Again, roll on 2015/16.

A final word about the new captain – Dave Goddard did a superb job. And whilst he didn’t score the runs expected of him he often sacrificed his wicket when trying to up the run rate and, then, several times, had to put his head down to fight his way out of a desperate situation. Mention has been made of his bowling – Dave instinctively knew when to bring himself on and he was a true game breaker. Unlike most bowler captains, Dave knew when to bowl and when not to – a priceless attribute!

And the Coach – Ian Trott’s contribution to the Team over the past 8 seasons has been immense. Ian, for the second time received Auckland Cricket’s Coach of the Year Award – fitting recognition of the amazing work that he does for the Team and the Club. Phil Horne, not as readily available this season, still gave invaluable help with warm-ups and his input of good cricketing sense.

Jocelyn Goodger completed her 19th season as scorer for Parnell Premiers. It is truly wonderful to have Jocelyn scoring for our Prems – totally reliable, always accurate and, with total ease, she is able to combat with humour any belligerant banter from other teams’ scorers. Should be noted that Joce, unlike a couple of other scorers, coped with cricHQ but also kept a conventional book as well – just amazing! Thank you Jocelyn – you are irreplaceable!

Dave Keane, our groundsman, did a superb job. The Shore Road pitch, tired and long overdue for relaying, played remarkably well due to Dave’s hard work. His wife, Carol, was in charge of the outfield mowing and lowered the cut – a move hugely appreciated by the fielders. Very sadly, Carol suffered a stroke early in January following an operation to remove a brain tumour and has been able to work since. This right at the time we had to re-locate to Orakei Domain. Dave had to take over a pitch block only just into its second season of use after relaying. That umpires and captains rated his efforts 3.9, only fractionally under top rated Colin Maiden’s 4.2, speaks volumes for Dave’s expertise and hard work at a particularly difficult time. The worst rated block received a 3.

Thanks indeed to Manager Steve Hurdley who, with Dave Keane, shouldered the major task of moving gear to Orakei Domain. Operating from two locations had obvious difficulties – just like a camping holiday. But thanks to their efforts, games at Orakei went ahead with little disruption and we were able to main our standards of ground protection and presentation – covers, sightscreen,

37. marquee and pickets etc. Steve must also be complimented in arranging meal parcels for Carol when she returned from hospital – she and Dave were very grateful.

And the catering – despite Orakei’s lack of facilities, we were able to maintain the high standard of lunches and meet Club is the Hub obligations. Many thanks to the mothers who prepare and serve the lunches – Janine Ravlic, Sue Talbot, Amanda Goddard, Ann Chapman and Lynne Horne . The food is always complimented upon by the umpires and visiting players. Walshy helped by providing two Coca Cola umbrellas which gave much needed shade.

Recent seasons have seen a large group of supporters at the games – hugely appreciated by the players and Club officials. Paul Sylvia scarcely misses a game, The Horne, Chapman, Talbot, Ravlic Varcoe and other parental families set up camp around the grounds. And other Parnell old timers take the odd look at the games. Their presence is often unannounced but Jill and Derek Thomas, Grant Barnes, Geoff Cooke, Bob Pearce and Brian Kilby are just a few that look in from time to time. Their presence is a tribute to the players and the excellent cricket they provide.

Finally, that the Auckland Umpires awarded the Team the Spirit of Cricket Trophy was a fitting accolade for a truly sensational season for Parnell. This award was only instituted six years ago and Parnell has won it three times – great credit to our captains Doug Winger, Will Brittain and, now, Dave Goddard. And, of course, Ian Trott, coach throughout this whole period.

I would be remiss to start without first acknowledging the achievements of the 1st team. The premier team taking out the 2-day championship was nothing short of remarkable. Hats off to Ian Trott & David Goddard for steering the team to the heights that were achieved this season gone. It was a pleasure watching your season unfold and you have set the benchmark for what the club should strive to achieve every season in all aspects – training, playing, commitment and team spirit.

While the 2nd XI couldn’t match the feat, it was a season that I feel has set the foundation of the team for the seasons to come. The 2014-15 season started with more than half the team being new to Parnell. The team floated mid-table for much of the season and that’s exactly where we finished.

The season started on a good note and we put together a few positive results before we threw away a few games for a good position. The ‘rotund’ Wood brothers (as Bryan affectionately named them) were amongst the new faces to the club and integrated exceptionally. Simon presented a composed, calming presence with Stuart acting as the puerile, boisterous foil in every sense. With the return of Justin Rosenberg (what a super cricketer) to regular cricket and Chey Barnes, our top order had the potential to match the top order of any other side in the competition. Unfortunately, we never seemed to all click together consistently with many games only seeing a good innings from either one or the other of the top 6. The fact that we couldn’t manage to have more

38. than 1 batsmen make a score of more than 50 during the whole season goes to reflect the lack of application while stressing the importance of carefully constructing an innings and partnerships. Catches may win matches, but partnerships win premierships.

The bowling on the other hand compensated for our batting and often was the reason we won games. The evidence is in the highlights column at below which is dominated by bowling performances. The young Joe Gray and seasoned Rudi Bisschoff led the way all season and I could not speak highly enough of the efforts both put in and are predominantly the reason the team finished as high as we did. There were several outstanding bowling performances from both of them. Jono Bennett was also great in the few games he played for us. Nelu de Silva had a few cameo games and performed well before starting school cricket. Pete Legget was an important member of the team before work intervened and he was not available regularly. The availability of talented young cricketers such as Jack Leggat, Henry King, Matt MacCormack, Jack Driscoll at the end of the university year helped greatly with boosting our stocks with each playing a big part in the team putting a few good wins together. I look forward to them contributing to Parnell again next season, though I have no doubt that as they develop, they will be Premier level players. Blue ‘Yung Fiji’ Hamel was simply wonderful, put together several wonderful innings & always put his best foot forward. Blue always maintained a positive attitude and willingness to do whatever was asked of him without once complaining, even if it meant he wasn’t given a bowl, taken out of the attack too early or batted lower in the order than he deserved. Going forward, I expect big things from Blue and have no doubts that he has all the qualities to be a premier all-rounder with some hard graft in the offseason.

Tom Hills and George Harper Jr came down from the prems, looked a class above the rest and played themselves into form. George’s ton (123 ) against the then top-side in the competition, was simply outstanding and a joy to watch, but most importantly gave George the confidence boost he needed at that particular moment in the season. Playing against Cornwall in the first play-off, I saw one of the most outstanding bowling spells with Tom Hills taking 9-41 to bowl Cornwall out for a modest total. Unfortunately, we collapsed with the bat – a theme that was consistent throughout the season – and were dismissed cheaply for less than a 100. My disappointment in the team for not being able to back up Hillsy’s performance with the bat was somewhat explicitly relayed to the team.

Attendance at training and fielding practice was not a particularly strong point for us this season and will need to be addressed. If we see the majority of the core members of the team back next season, and with a few changes and adjustments, I have no doubt we have a very real shot at challenging for the title and promotion.

It would be iniquitous to finish without acknowledging the huge efforts and help that the team has received this season. On a personal note, it was wonderful to be back playing cricket again after so many years out of the game and I thank the club for the warm welcome I received when I arrived and the faith entrusted in me to lead the team. Bryan Haggitt & Ian Trott deserve unreserved gratitude for their contribution and moral support both to me as well as the team. Ian was often stretched thin with trying to run two teams and made a real effort to support the Reserves whenever he could. Phil Horne made himself available in his own time to help us with warm-ups, which was hugely appreciated. Last and perhaps most importantly, to the players – a sincere thank you for your efforts, support, patience and understanding. It has been a pleasure to share the dressing room and field with you all. I look forward to seeing you all back again after the winter break for what I’m sure will be a fantastic season for us.

THIRDS – TWO DAY 1B GRADE Captain: Josh Milne

Peter Hickman At Eden Park – ICC CWC Elliot Jaffe

39. Elliot Jaffe, on behalf of Skipper Josh, reported “that the 2014/2015 season was a much improved one for the team this year, with a fantastic 3rd place result in the one day competition as a result of many close games both win and loss giving us the most bonus points in the competition. The team also finished 5th in the two day competition, being on the losing side of a few close matches but a great effort none the less.

The first half of the season was a tough one with a lot of players not available, meaning we struggled for wins during this part, which was a main reason for a poor result in the two-day competition. The second half of the season was much more positive with players being available post Christmas and we enjoyed a very good spell of games in the one day competition.

Thanks to all of the 30 players who played games in the thirds this season it was a great one and we look forward to the next!”

[Elliot sums up the season well and the positive attitude of the Team. The loss of Tim Konara as a regular player and captain was huge but Josh stepped into the breach and did extremely well both as captain and player. The side started by punching well above it’s apparent weight but had the misfortune to have several close misses. Then the batting grew in confidence – Luke and Josh started to score consistently and with dominance The return of past regulars, particularly Ben Gresson and Tom Horrocks helped hugely plus those dropping down from the Reserves. Luke and Ben scored centuries and oungsters were encouraged and developed – Elliot Jaffe and Peter Hickman hit stunning innings of 91 and 82 respectively, Scott Hillman an excellent 47. James Nuttall added experience.

The departure mid season of Mohan weakened the pace attack which was always makeshift and seldom the same week to week. However, Prasant Dharjee excelled when he played as did Peter Legget. Peter Hickman, Ben Gresson and Christian Wylie had their successes as did Giacomo Lamplough in his one game before returning to Hong Kong. Since then, Giacomo has been selected for the Hong Kong national team. Last, and most importantly, Elliot Humphries bowled his left arm spinners superby all season – 101 overs for 26 wickets at only 18.50 – a great return for the mainstay of the attack. – Editor]

ONE DAY 2A GRADE – PARNELL FEARLESS Captain: Abhishek Bhalla

This was our 1st season with Parnell Cricket Club. It was season with mixed results. We finished season in our 2a grade ranked 5th with 7 wins in total. We managed to win only 1 game in the first half of season and it was only in second half that we register our other 6 wins. The difference between winning and losing games came down to our fielding where we dropped 4 catches on average per game throughout the season. We did played couple of nail bitters (both away games) against Eden Roskill where we won by 6 runs in the last over defending 316 and chased down 240 against Cornwall winning by 1 wicket. The highlight of season was a win against Eden Roskill where we chased down 243 in 22 overs thanks to a 27 ball 95 by Maninder Singh that included 13 sixes. All and all, a disappointing season but one can only learn from mistakes. We will surely be back next season and try to put things right and win the grade for Parnell. Team Awards - Best Batsman – Maninder Singh (546 runs, 40 x 4’s, 43 x 6’s) Best Bowler – Abhishek Bhalla (28 wickets) Captain’s Prize – Jagroop Singh On behalf of my team, I would like to thank the Club and the Club Manager for all the support given through the season.

Abhishek Bhalla

ONE DAY 2B GRADE – PLO Captain: Mark Murphy

The side made the top 4 for the first time in a few years. Unfortunately our season came to a premature end with the final in sight. A game against AISC was called off due to poor sportsmanship. Both sides were defaulted for the finals week.

Simranjeet Singh was superb with the ball and captured 28 wickets during the season. Mark Murphy and Satpal Singh gave great support again

Rob Samuel and Mark Murphy again led the batting stats

ONE DAY 4B GRADE - PARNELL KINGS Captain : Aaron Samuel Joseph

This side had an outstanding season and had captured the Grade championship until a dispute arose with the other finalist. Never- the-less games against other sides had been played in good spirit and some superb cricket played. The stats tell the story – several centuries and some excellent bowling. We welcome the “Kings” back for 2015/16 and look forward to seeing more excellent cricket from them in this coming season.

TREASURER’S REPORT TO 2015 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Overview I can report that overall a very good season financially for Parnell Cricket Club. The Club ran a Net Operating Profit of $ 45,753, with excess of Income over Expenditure (after Depreciation) of $ 33,897. This is an improvement of approximately $ 17,000 on the previous season, itself improved on the previous two seasons. This was achieved by driving Cricket Activities Income greater than budgeted (principally TJC and Catering), and in spite of falling membership. Expenditure was also below budget with savings on Asset, Staff and Communications costs. Specific comments on Income and Expenditure included below, and detailed Auditted Accounts attached. Particular thanks to our principal sponsor, Insight+Acsot Radiology, who are a highly valued partner of the Club. Insight+Acsot Radiology have been a partner now for three years, and its ongoing support has been a fundamental element in the Club’s strong operational outcome. The Club is also very grateful for the ongoing support of Player Sports, Brittain Wynyard, Vintage Sports Tours and Rod Eddowes Insurance again this season. And to Kumeu River Wines and Doolans Brothers Newmarket for their sponsorship this season. The Club extends its grateful thanks also to Pub Charity, NZ Community Trust, Four Winds Foundation and Infinity Foundation for the trust grants awarded to Parnell during the season. The grants from these organisations have invaluably supported our coaching programmes and supply of balls during the season. The Club is also very grateful to Auckland Cricket for the ongoing funding support provided through the Club-is-the-Hub Scheme. While overall this is a pleasing result, and puts the Club in a strong position for the coming season, I expect there will be pressure on external funding sources, specifically those from Trust grants, reduced ACA funding due to lower membership, and uncertainty about the sustainability of Catering and TJC revenue streams. A particular concern is the reduction in revenue from Junior Coaching programmes, perhaps partially linked to falling Junior membership. Given operating result, in part driven by strong revenue from TJC operations, the Board decided to extend the loan facility to RPSCCT. Presently the RPSCCT holds loans from PCC, the Peter Badley Trust and EDCA which were provided for development of TJC. The Board has resolved to increase the PCC loan by $ 60,000 to enable RPSCCT to pay the PBT the outstanding amount of its loan, and recapitalise the PBT. For the coming season the outgoing Board is recommending no increase in subscriptions. This would be the second year of no increase, hoping this will help to drive membership to previous levels and halt the worrying reduction, particularly in Junior numbers, over the last five seasons. A very pleasing result. And thanks to all who helped achieve this. I take the opportunity to congratulate our Premier Men’s team for winning the 2014/15 Hedley Howarth Trophy for the ACA two-day Major Championship. This is a fantastic result after the 70 odd year wait since the previous. Congratulations to Coach Ian Trott and Captain Dave Goddard, and particularly pleasing also that the team collected the Spirit of Cricket Award for the way it conducted itself during the season. Looking Forward The falling membership is a great concern: one less Senior team (twelve to eleven) and Junior numbers down by over 80 to 570 (down 12 %). Four years ago Junior numbers peaked at 720. This directly has a huge impact on one of our critical income streams. As mentioned at the AGM of each of the last two years I consider the greatest risk to the Club is still the lack of volunteers coming through, who are prepared to get involved in the administration of the Club. I note that this last year we underspent the budget by $ 10,000 on comms with wider Stakeholders. This is my last report as Treasurer. As advised to last year’s AGM I am not available for re-election to the Board. I have enjoyed my time, initially on the Junior Committee and latterly the Club Board, as an administrator and Junior coach for the Club. While the marriage of the Junior and Senior sections of the Club six years ago was a very positive step, I do regret that after bringing the two sections together we have not been able to lift the Club’s operations to the next level: Membership is falling, and faster than our neighbouring and associated EDCA clubs. It is my opinion that we must strive to re-engage and connect more effectively with our Membership and other stakeholders. I strongly believe that this will be best achieved by promoting strong management, and enabling and freeing volunteers to connect with membership and concentrate on governance of the Club.
