[William Flintoft played football for Melbourne 1909-12 and St Kilda 1913, and served as President of the Melbourne Football Club 1947-49. He played for the Melbourne Cricket Club 1909 to 1927, and served on the MCC Committee from 1937 until his death in 1951. During WWI he served in the First Australian Imperial Force as a Second Lieutenant in the 58th Battalion, and saw action in Egypt, France and Belgium. [Fred Baring was a successful cricketer playing Sheffield Shield for Victoria, and managed 30 first-class matches 1911-29; he came close to playing Test cricket for Australia having been named in the squad to tour South Africa in 1914-15, but the tour was cancelled due to World War I.     Major D. G. M. MURPHY AM [1914 – 2005] Major Murphy was President of the Club 1954-55 Douglas Gordon Murtagh Murphy was born in Elsternwick, Victoria, on 17 August 1914 – son of Murtagh Robert Murphy and Kathleen Mary (née Bell). He had two siblings, Peter, and Margaret. He was educated at Tocumwal Public School, Ivanhoe Grammar School, and at Hay War Memorial High School (NSW). He was awarded a Scholarship to Sydney Teachers College, Sydney in 1930, and completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney in 1938. We thank the History Interest Group and other volunteers who have researched and prepared these Notes The series will be progressively expanded and developed. They are intended as casual reading for the benefit of Members, who are encouraged to advise of any inaccuracies in the material. He initially served in the Infantry including Darwin Mobile Force; and later transferred to Signals (including in 3 Division in Melbourne in 1942) before appointment to staff positions.

The Cricket Section’s transformation from a section of the Old Boys Club closed to all but old boys of DHS to the present DHS Rhythm is probably a microcosm of the changing country in which we live. In the late 1960’s the Old Boys Club was opened to cater for ‘selected’ members that would strengthen the sporting sections and over time the economic benefits of accepting all and sundry as members became a reality and the stage was set for the Cricket Section to respond to the changing economic and social times and thus ensured its survival. Not surprisingly, since DHS is probably the greatest cricketing school in the world, Old Boys cricket has always been strong and were perennial contenders for the League Title through to the late 1990’s with players like Barry Richards, Vince van der Bijl, Dale Benkenstein, Chris Wilkins, Darryl Scott, Neil Harvey, Dave Orchard, Kenny Cooper, Ian Tayfield, Bomber Warman, Kevin Robinson, Kurt Donaldson, Geoff Griffin, Pat Schultz, Peter Dodds, Dennis Gamsy, Colin Wesley, Richard Dumbrill, Barry Moody, Grayson Heath gracing the team over the years amongst a host of other fine players ensuring their constant competitiveness for league honours.
