February 2009 will be a significant month in the history of Golden Oldies Cricket, being 25 years since the very first Air New Zealand Golden Oldies World Cricket Festival.

The first Festival was held in Auckland, 18-26 February 1984, with thirty four teams from six countries taking part.

Biennial Festivals since have travelled the world with events being mounted in Brighton, , Vancouver (twice), , , Sydney, Cape Town, Rotorua, Sunshine Coast, and Colombo. The 13th and most successful Festival (from a numbers point of view) was held earlier this year in Queenstown with a ‘sold out’ 58 teams taking part!

Golden Oldies in New Zealand will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a special fixture involving three of the original teams that took part in the 1984 Festival. The ‘Cricket Society’, ‘Counties Crocks’ and ‘Onehunga Mallers’ will join a ‘Secretariat Invitation XI’ in two matches at Waikaraka Park, Onehunga, Auckland on Sunday 22 February.

Look out for a ‘special anniversary’ issue of the Golden Oldies Cricket email newsletter which will review the matches and feature stories and memorabilia from that first World Festival 25 years ago.
