Parnell Club

Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No. 100: February 2016 NZ Cricket Awards – Thursday, 25 February

Parnell’s Bryan Haggitt was awarded NZ Cricket’s Volunteer of the Year for 2015 by Sir

NZ CRICKET’S “VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR – 2015”: Bryan Haggitt was presented with this Community Award last Thursday. The citation for his nomination read:

“Bryan Haggitt has shown a huge amount of passion and commitment towards the Parnell CC as a player and administrator since joining in 1954 as a 12 year old. His contribution to the club, NZ’s oldest having been founded in 1858 and currently with 750 players, has been extraordinary over the past 60 years or so and includes the following: Committee member (1964/65, 1996/97 to 2007/08) Hon. Treasurer (2003/04) Hon. Secretary and Board member (2008/09 to 2014/15) President (2007 to 2011) Life Member since 2011

Bryan is a past winner of the Auckland CA Carson Cup as Club Administrator of the Year (2010/11), as well as PCC’s W J Dinnison Cup for Prowess, Sportsmanship and Club Spirit (inaugural winner in 1957/58).

In addition he has been the collator of all club playing results and statistics, and publisher of the PCC annual report since 2006, a very fine publication that covers the playing results of the junior and senior sections of the club, PCC representative players over that season, club finances, club officers and bearers going back to 1884, aggregated club playing records and statistics going back to 1894/95 etc., (please see 2014/15 version attached).

Bryan has performed the role of Manager of the PCC men’s premier team since 2008/09, a role that he still holds.

He has organised and led Parnell CC’s Adaptive Cricket Day in conjunction with St Kentigern Boys School over the past 5 seasons, this introducing and developing cricket skills for special needs children across Auckland. As well as this he was the lead organiser of PCC’s 150 year anniversary celebrations.

Finally, and possibly the most impressively in recent years, Bryan produces a PCC Newsletter that is sent to all club members most weeks over the season (please see latest version attached). This keeps the junior and senior club members informed of the latest results, upcoming fixtures and events, coaching opportunities etc. while also reflecting on the club’s very strong history by providing quiz questions based on past club photos which he holds.

Bryan is a wonderful club historian while also having a good eye for the future. He has quite simply been an extraordinary club member for some 60 years. He still contributes significantly attending most monthly PCC Board meetings as Life Member. He would be a very worthy winner of the NZC Volunteer of the Year Award, and his nomination by PCC is strongly supported by Auckland CA.

Footnote: Bryan was away from Auckland for the period 1965-78 whilst working for the NZ Insurance Co. In that time he played for a number of cricket clubs and had several administrative roles: 1965-66 Fiji Imperial Colts CC Suva Cricket Assn (Hon. Treasurer) 1966-68 Invercargill Old Boys CC (Club ) Wanderers CC (organiser/captain) Southland Cricket Assn (Committee) 1968-71 Nelson Toi Toi United CC (Premier Captain 1970-71) Ramblers CC (Hon. Secretary/Treasurer) Nelson Cricket Assn (Committee) 1971-72 Johannesburg Wanderers CC 1972 London Aorangi CC 1973-75 Kuching, E. Malaysia incl. representing Sarawak vs Brunei 1973-78 Hong Kong Hong Kong CC 1977 Manila, Philippines Nomads CC

Returning to Auckland and Parnell in 1978, Bryan captained a PCC One Day social team from 1979-83 and from 1988-2000 he managed his son’s Parnell junior team ie. from Grade 2 through to U-18.”

[Bryan responds: “Reads like a funeral eulogy but at least I am still here to thank the Club, and particularly Chairman Craig, for nominating me! Also, very grateful thanks to so many Club members who have since contacted me with congratulations. I can say that I very much appreciate the award but know so many others who do so much for the game but remain unrecognized.”]

Day 1. Suburbs fielded a team lacking Luke Dudman and Reese Young who had played gainst us the previous Sunday in the Cup Semi Final. We lacked Lockie Ferguson, back with the Aces, Henry King, returned to Wellington and George Harper and Tom Hills (both at the Test in Christchurch?). However, Sam Varcoe returned to bolster the top order and Billy Sanger came up from the Reserves to add to our pace attack. Ganesh drew first blood trapping Hodson lbw but it was Billy who created the most havoc by having Barry and then Basset-Graham caught by Tim and Ben. 3/86 and, immediately after, Ben young Mitchell Murray (last year’s King’s College star) off Dave. The rout continued – a great throw from Tom Talbot had Solia runout and at lunch 5 were down for 112. After the break, and despite the heat, Rav came into his own. Rav had a really superb spell taking 4 whilst Dave wove a spell with his offies at the other end. The innings was tidied up in no time at all. Whilst Ben went lbw early, Sam and Tim carried on in very positive manner. Sam looked in top form – hooked one classicaly for 6 and was progressing at almost a a ball before he was adjudged lbw. Tim continued his great form – some splendid drives – straight and through the covers - until he was surprisingly caught behind off Dane Watson. Jesse took over and, with Tom Talbot, secured 1st innings points and continued on confidently till he was the third lbw victim. Tom, meantime, batted attractively and remains along with Ben Rainger – ready to continue on Day 2.

Day 2. Dave declared at our overnight total. Several changes to both sides by agreement – Ganesh and Billy Sanger had both sustained side strains and were replaced by Tom Hills and Tom Urry and George Harper returned. SNL lost Bassett-Graham early – well caught behind by Ben off Rav, but solid batting by Solia and Barry removed their deficet. Whist our Skipper made inroads with his offies their score mounted. Parslow stuck and was well aided by Montgomery. Rav didn’t have the success of the 1st innings but gave David huge support. Tom Hills was very unlucky and, like Tom Urry, went wicketless. But it was Dave Goddard who really bowled well – always in control throughout a very lengthy spell and was aided by Tim’s catching at slip, one a real beauty at full stretch. Then, at 237/8 the declaration came leaving us 33 overs to score 194 – 5.88 per over needed. George Harper opened with Tim and, undaunted by the task, they counterattacked scoring at a great rate. Tim scored at just better than a run per ball but George, with some superb straight drives, was the more dominant and, if the rain hadn’t come in the 9th over causing the game to be abandoned, an outright win to Parnell had looked assured.

20 & 27 February PARNELL vs. AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY Shore Road Reserve

AUCC 155 Matt Ansell 88, Rudi Bisschoff 2/19 (10), Stu Wood 3/46 (15), Razin Bharde 2/35 (12) & 76/4 Rudi Bischoff 1/36 (8), Stu Wood 1/16 (7), Billy Sanger 2/15 (6) PARNELL 312/9 dec. Ben Walker 33 (53), Chey Barnes 116 (187), Justin Rosenberg 93 (128) RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st innings points to Parnell

Day 1. If it hadn’t been for University’s Matt Ansell, Parnell would have had a truly great day with the ball. However, Matt opened and scored more than half of University’s runs. For us, Rudi, Stu and Razin bowled admirably – excellent figures for all. Then our batting – some enigmas! Ben Walker, who played a game for us about 4 seasons ago and scored 90, was a last minute drafting. Ben scored 33 but Ryan Turner, opening, failed and neither Wood brothers troubled the scorers. Chey then rescued the ship with by far his best innings of the season. Chey finally found a partner with stickability – Rudi who dug his toes in and, together, they have so far put on 50 for the 6th - 135/5 at stumps, 21 needed for the lead!

Day 2. Chey carried on in style – hitting his second ton for the Club, the first being his 104* way back in the 2009/11 season. Justin backed him admirably till he was stumped just 7 short of his . The declaration came, AUCC lost wickets from the start and an outright win by an innings looked a distinct possibility – until the rain came! All the same, AUCC may well have been displaced by us at the top of the Two Day table

20 & 27 February PARNELL vs. SUBURBS NL PHANTOMS Eastdale Road

PARNELL 133 Ettiene van Vuuren 28, James Nuttall 26 & 211/7 dec. SUBURBS NL PHANTOMS 143 James Nuttall 2/30 (8), Pete Hickman 3/47 (9) & 107/4 RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st innings points to Suburbs New Lynn

Day 1. A disappointing batting effort, saved only by Etti and James, didn’t leave the bowlers much scope. However, they responded well and had Suburbs on the ropes. Pete and James especially, and it was an excellent effort that very nearly saved the situation. Day 2. An all out assault on the SNL attack enabled Pete to declare and, after the opposition made a sound start, our bowlers started to make inroads and gain the ascendency. An outright was looking a distinct possibility but the rain came.

Mid afternoon, James Nuttall headed for the Airport and home – best wishes James, thanks for your coaching work here, have a good northern summer and we look forward to having you back at Parnell next season.

One Day 2B Grade

26 February PARNELL KINGS vs. ONE DAY PREMIERS Madill’s Farm PARNELL KINGS 330/8 (40) Roopesh 89, Hari 75, Abrar 50 PARNELL OD PREMS 129 (25.1) Chak 2/25, Roopesh 2/10 RESULT: PARNELL KINGS WON BY 201 RUNS

Skipper Chak reports: It was a Parnell Derby last Saturday as we played the 1 Day Premiers side at Madills Farm. 1 day premiers won the toss and elected to bowl first. We lost 3 quick wickets early on but some brilliant batting from Roopesh Abrar and Hari took our total to 330 for 8 in 40 overs. On reply we took wickets at regular intervals and they were short of players as well and were bowled out for 129 in 25.1overs overs.

Mark Chapman – “Mankaded” by

The week before last Mark, playing for Hong Kong vs. Oman, was dismissed in this manner. Apparently no warning was given to the batsman as is custom (but not mandatory under the Laws). This in rather the same manner as in the World Under 19 Tournament when a Zimbabwean batsman was run out by a West Indian bowler. Following that latter incident, I included details of how Vinoo Mankad had warned Aussie opener Bill Brown in an earlier game and then, in the Test, ran him out when he again backed up early. If a batsman backs up early then he is cribbing ground and if he is run out he deserves to be out. However, my concern is that it is very easy for a bowler to deceive a batsman by appearing to bowl and to entice the non striker to leave his ground – ie an entrapment. That would “not be cricket” and hopefully the umpires will be aware of any such sharp practice and deal with it firmly. Deliberate entrapment must not be condoned and I have sympathy for Mark as I believe he may have been a victim of this bad practice. From ESPN cricinfo – Mark went in to bat on ’s dismissal – here is the ball by ball sequence: Anshuman Rath st †Sultan Ahmed b Amir Ali 11 (32m 17b 1x4 0x6) SR: 64.70 7.2 Amir Ali to Chapman, no run, front-foot block by the new batsman. 7.3 Amir Ali to Chapman, no run, comes down the track but blocks again. 7.4 Amir Ali to Chapman, no run, tries to glide it this time through point but can't manage to get a single. 7.5 Amir Ali to Chapman, FOUR, sweeps hard now towards square leg, fielder is there but he fails to grab properly. 7.6 Amir Ali to Chapman, 2 runs, tries to sweep again but top edge goes behind the keeper,a double nevertheless. End of over 8 (6 runs) Hong Kong 69/2 (112 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 8.62, RRR: 9.33)

 o MS Chapman6 (5b 1x4) o Babar Hayat51 (25b 8x4 1x6)  o Amir Ali1-0-6-1 o Aamir Kaleem1-0-6-0

8.1 Aamir Kaleem to , 1 run, pushes down the ground towards long off. 8.2 Aamir Kaleem to Chapman, 1 run, flicks this towards fine leg this time. 8.3 Aamir Kaleem to Babar Hayat, FOUR, comes down the track and lofts over extra cover, wonderful shot. 8.4 Aamir Kaleem to Babar Hayat, 1 run, a mere block resulting in a quick single. 8.5 Aamir Kaleem to Chapman, 1 run, OUT, Kaleem has Mankaded here! Chapman was backing up a bit maybe unintentionally, the bowler starts to bowl but notices this and doesn't hesitate at all to make full use of the situation. It might just be the turning point of the game. MS Chapman run out 8 (8m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 114.28 8.6 Aamir Kaleem to Babar Hayat, no run, a front-foot block this time.

Hong Kong lost the game. I have not seen any film footage nor have I spoken to Mark but I repeat my concern that entrapment is not within the spirit of the game. On the other hand constant early backing up by the non striker to steal short runs is cheating and should be dealt to harshly. Another situation where only the umpires can decide – one hopes that they are watchful, decisive and fair! Ed.
