Weekly Update Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No. 100: February 2016 NZ Cricket Awards – Thursday, 25 February Parnell’s Bryan Haggitt was awarded NZ Cricket’s Volunteer of the Year for 2015 by Sir Richard Hadlee NZ CRICKET’S “VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR – 2015”: Bryan Haggitt was presented with this Community Award last Thursday. The citation for his nomination read: “Bryan Haggitt has shown a huge amount of passion and commitment towards the Parnell CC as a player and administrator since joining in 1954 as a 12 year old. His contribution to the club, NZ’s oldest having been founded in 1858 and currently with over 750 players, has been extraordinary over the past 60 years or so and includes the following: Committee member (1964/65, 1996/97 to 2007/08) Hon. Treasurer (2003/04) Hon. Secretary and Board member (2008/09 to 2014/15) President (2007 to 2011) Life Member since 2011 Bryan is a past winner of the Auckland CA Carson Cup as Club Administrator of the Year (2010/11), as well as PCC’s W J Dinnison Cup for Prowess, Sportsmanship and Club Spirit (inaugural winner in 1957/58). In addition he has been the collator of all club playing results and statistics, and publisher of the PCC annual report since 2006, a very fine publication that covers the playing results of the junior and senior sections of the club, PCC representative players over that season, club finances, club officers and bearers going back to 1884, aggregated club playing records and statistics going back to 1894/95 etc., (please see 2014/15 version attached). Bryan has performed the role of Manager of the PCC men’s premier team since 2008/09, a role that he still holds. He has organised and led Parnell CC’s Adaptive Cricket Day in conjunction with St Kentigern Boys School over the past 5 seasons, this introducing and developing cricket skills for special needs children across Auckland. As well as this he was the lead organiser of PCC’s 150 year anniversary celebrations. Finally, and possibly the most impressively in recent years, Bryan produces a PCC Newsletter that is sent to all club members most weeks over the season (please see latest version attached). This keeps the junior and senior club members informed of the latest results, upcoming fixtures and events, coaching opportunities etc. while also reflecting on the club’s very strong history by providing quiz questions based on past club photos which he holds. Bryan is a wonderful club historian while also having a good eye for the future. He has quite simply been an extraordinary club member for some 60 years. He still contributes significantly attending most monthly PCC Board meetings as Life Member. He would be a very worthy winner of the NZC Volunteer of the Year Award, and his nomination by PCC is strongly supported by Auckland CA. Footnote: Bryan was away from Auckland for the period 1965-78 whilst working for the NZ Insurance Co. In that time he played for a number of cricket clubs and had several administrative roles: 1965-66 Fiji Imperial Colts CC Suva Cricket Assn (Hon. Treasurer) 1966-68 Invercargill Old Boys CC (Club Captain) Wanderers CC (organiser/captain) Southland Cricket Assn (Committee) 1968-71 Nelson Toi Toi United CC (Premier Captain 1970-71) Ramblers CC (Hon. Secretary/Treasurer) Nelson Cricket Assn (Committee) 1971-72 Johannesburg Wanderers CC 1972 London Aorangi CC 1973-75 Kuching, E. Malaysia incl. representing Sarawak vs Brunei 1973-78 Hong Kong Hong Kong CC 1977 Manila, Philippines Nomads CC Returning to Auckland and Parnell in 1978, Bryan captained a PCC One Day social team from 1979-83 and from 1988-2000 he managed his son’s Parnell junior team ie. from Grade 2 through to U-18.” [Bryan responds: “Reads like a funeral eulogy but at least I am still here to thank the Club, and particularly Chairman Craig, for nominating me! Also, very grateful thanks to so many Club members who have since contacted me with congratulations. I can say that I very much appreciate the award but know so many others who do so much for the game but remain unrecognized.”] Other NZ Cricket Community Awardees were: Secondary School Boys’ First XI Player: Rachin Ravindra of Hutt International Boys’ School Best Female Initiative: Cricket Wellington Club of the Year: Cornwall Cricket Club NZ Post : Community Development Officer: Sam Ward, Southland Cricket Outstanding Contribution to Cricket: Mark Benefield, Ellerslie CC Sir Jack Newman Award: Peter Burke, Burnside West Christchurch University CC Sam Ward, 2 Wellington Cricket reps, Mark Benefield, Sir Richard, Rachin Ravindra, Ian Dee of Cornwall CC, Peter Burke, Bryan Haggitt NZ CRICKET’S CRICKET AWARDS Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for Player of the Year: Kane Williamson Test International Player of the Year: Kane Williamson ODI International Player of the Year: Martin Guptill T20 International Player of the Year: Martin Guptill Winsor Cup (Bowling): Trent Boult Redpath Cup (Batting): Kane Williamson International Women's Player of the Year: Suzie Bates Domestic Women's Player of the Year: Amy Satterthwaite Bert Sutcliffe Medal – Outstanding Contribution: Rex Smith, Chair of Auckland Cricket, Cornwall CC stalwart Men’s Premier Grade - Hedley Howarth Trophy 20 & 27 February PARNELL vs. SUBURBS NEW LYNN Ken Maunder Park 1. Suburbs fielded a team lacking Luke Dudman and Reese Young who had played gainst us the previous Sunday in the Jeff Crowe Cup Semi Final. We lacked Lockie Ferguson, back with the Aces, Henry King, returned to Wellington and George Harper and Tom Hills (both at the Test in Christchurch?). However, Sam Varcoe returned to bolster the top order and Billy Sanger came up from the Reserves to add to our pace attack. Ganesh drew first blood trapping Hodson lbw but it was Billy who created the most havoc by having Barry and then Basset-Graham caught by Tim and Ben. 3/86 and, immediately after, Ben stumped young Mitchell Murray (last year’s King’s College star) off Dave. The rout continued – a great throw from Tom Talbot had Solia runout and at lunch 5 were down for 112. After the break, and despite the heat, Rav came into his own. Rav had a really superb spell taking 4 wickets whilst Dave wove a spell with his offies at the other end. The innings was tidied up in no time at all. Whilst Ben went lbw early, Sam and Tim carried on in very positive manner. Sam looked in top form – hooked one classicaly for 6 and was progressing at almost a run a ball before he was adjudged lbw. Tim continued his great form – some splendid drives – straight and through the covers - until he was surprisingly caught behind off Dane Watson. Jesse took over and, with Tom Talbot, secured 1st innings points and continued on confidently till he was the third lbw victim. Tom, meantime, batted attractively and remains not out along with Ben Rainger – ready to continue on Day 2. Day 2. Dave declared at our overnight total. Several changes to both sides by agreement – Ganesh and Billy Sanger had both sustained side strains and were replaced by Tom Hills and Tom Urry and George Harper returned. SNL lost Bassett-Graham early – well caught behind by Ben off Rav, but solid batting by Solia and Barry removed their deficet. Whist our Skipper made inroads with his offies their score mounted. Parslow stuck and was well aided by Montgomery. Rav didn’t have the success of the 1st innings but gave David huge support. Tom Hills was very unlucky and, like Tom Urry, went wicketless. But it was Dave Goddard who really bowled well – always in control throughout a very lengthy spell and was aided by Tim’s catching at slip, one a real beauty at full stretch. Then, at 237/8 the declaration came leaving us 33 overs to score 194 – 5.88 per over needed. George Harper opened with Tim and, undaunted by the task, they counterattacked scoring at a great rate. Tim scored at just better than a run per ball but George, with some superb straight drives, was the more dominant and, if the rain hadn’t come in the 9th over causing the game to be abandoned, an outright win to Parnell had looked assured. • Weekly Update – 24 October 2009
Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.174 – Black Caps Pipped Again Unbelievable – Deja Vue – Black Caps Pipped Again! Call it what you will, the Tie at Eden Park on Sunday, in the series deciding 5th T20, was the most extraordinary coincidence. Again, NZ lost fewer wickets to England, the winner of the “super over”. But who makes the rules by which these games are played? Consider these logics: CRICKET IS A GAME BETWEEN TWO TEAMS – OBJECT TO SCORE MORE RUNS/TAKE MORE WICKETS THAN THE OTHER TEAM • Why then not award the game, when tied, to the Team that loses the fewer wickets – on this basis NZ would have won the ICC CWC (lost only 8 wickets to England’s 10) and yesterday’s T20 (T11) – NZ lost 5, England 7 wickets. • But why, in the ICC CWC, was England able to contest the “super over” – it had lost all 10 wickets. Should have been end of story! • Or, if a “super over” has to be bowled, then wouldn’t it be more logical for the batsmen to be those who were not out or still to bat? Once out means OUT? And bowl only a bowler who hadn’t used his T20 quota. In the interest of fairness and logic! Having got that angst off my chest, what a remarkable game yesterday! Talk of coincidences – and quite extraordinary that the game even took place. We had waited all day Saturday for the forecast rain which, most thankfully, held off. And Sunday morning was fine – when the rain did come, around 11am, it came! The whole of Auckland was blanketed – not too heavy but steady and the wind had dropped.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.
