Update No.174 – Black Caps Pipped Again

Unbelievable – Deja Vue – Black Caps Pipped Again!

Call it what you will, the Tie at on Sunday, in the series deciding 5th T20, was the most extraordinary coincidence. Again, NZ lost fewer to , the winner of the “super ”. But who makes the rules by which these games are played? Consider these logics:

CRICKET IS A GAME BETWEEN TWO TEAMS – OBJECT TO SCORE MORE RUNS/TAKE MORE WICKETS THAN THE OTHER TEAM

• Why then not award the game, when tied, to the Team that loses the fewer wickets – on this basis NZ would have won the ICC CWC (lost only 8 wickets to England’s 10) and yesterday’s T20 (T11) – NZ lost 5, England 7 wickets.

• But why, in the ICC CWC, was England able to contest the “super over” – it had lost all 10 wickets. Should have been end of story!

• Or, if a “super over” has to be bowled, then wouldn’t it be more logical for the batsmen to be those who were or still to bat? Once out means OUT? And bowl only a bowler who hadn’t used his T20 quota. In the interest of fairness and logic!

Having got that angst off my chest, what a remarkable game yesterday! Talk of coincidences – and quite extraordinary that the game even took place. We had waited all day Saturday for the forecast rain which, most thankfully, held off. And Sunday morning was fine – when the rain did come, around 11am, it came! The whole of was blanketed – not too heavy but steady and the wind had dropped. Congratulations to the crowd that still came to Eden Park – last Wednesday, pre-sales indicated a 14,000 attendance but further sales, including walk-up, stalled due to the appalling weather forecast. But 9,000 still turned up in the hope of play. And play we got – amazing! Great credit to the Match Officials and Eden Park Groundstaff – absolute minimum of mucking about, skies started to clear around 3pm and, by 3.30 “FIRST BALL 4.00PM” came up on the Big Screen. Covers came off, a quick sweep of the outfield and we had a T11 – and what a game!

“Super Over” – Chris Jordan to bowl the last ball ball. Another win to England but …….!

ANOTHER MARVELLOUS GAME OF CRICKET AT ’S NATIONAL STADIUM ROLL ON THE TESTS!

Another Outstanding Weekend for Parnell Teams

Men’s Premier Grade – Hedley Howarth Trophy, Two Day Championship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Cornwall at Cornwall Park 1.

PARNELL 369/9 dec. (87) Ben Rainger 40, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 95, Aniket Parikh 107, O Shepperson 4/80 (12) CORNWALL 169/10 (59.3) S Nair 51, L Dasent 48*, Fanie de Villiers 42/5 (15), Josh Fisher 48/4 ((14) & following on 123/3 (34) A Dhadwal 87* : Match Drawn – 1st Innings points to Parnell

Fanie de Villiers leading the Team from the field after taking 5/42. Don’t forget Josh Fisher – at one point he had 4/14 Cornwall was then asked to follow on. Our very solid start, 369 on Day 1., continued with a top perfomance in the field on Day 2. Cornwall beginning at 20/1 lost it’s 2nd at 54 and was soon 94/7. Main destroyer to this point was Josh Fisher who had taken 4/14. Pressure continued with our pace attack of Josh, Ganesh, Ollie and, particularly, Fanie bowling well though Marra and Dasent – former St Peter’s lad – dug in for a time. It was Fanie who cleaned up finally and gained his second 5 For in the space of 3 weeks against his former clubmates. Following on, Nair was snared early by Ollie but the Dhadwells stuck and though Jack Parsons and Andy Lane captured wickets, and Flynn bowled a solitary maiden over, the match ended in a draw with Cornwall still 77 in arrears.

Fanie Josh

Two shots of Harry Miller – he took 5 catches in Cornwall’s 1st innings, 2 in the 2nd

Women’s Premier Grade – Prichard Cup – One Day (50 over) Championship Round 2. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Cornwall at Thos. Bloodworth Park 1.

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 382/4 (50) K Gurrey 149* (105), A Peterson 121 (98), J Prasad 53 (46), Jess Barker 2/41 (6), Gemma Lord 1/59 (8), Sam Brake-Howard 1/50 (7) PARNELL 91/10 (28) Steph Carr 23 (35), A Eastwood 6/24 (10) RESULT: Auckland University won by 191 runs A superb opening partnership of 257 between Gurrey and Peterson scuttled all Parnell hopes. Facing a massive total our girls, apart from Steph, faded but they still came back to the Club with a smile after the game. We wish them well for next Saturday when they meet Takapuna – a very tough start to the season having to meet the 3 top teams first up.

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – President’s Cup, Two Day Major Championship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Papatoetoe at Shore Road Reserve 1.

PAPATOETOE 118/10 N Deol 35, Prasant Dhanjee 5/24, Ed Bartlett 1/43, Giacomo Lamplough 3/34 Razin Bharde 1/7 & 141/10 P Luthra 30, Ed Bartlett 3/44 (10), Simon Walker 1/13 (4), James Hook 1/20 (6) Razin Bharde 2/31 (5), Shiran Chaturanga 3/6 (5) PARNELL 345/7 dec Matt Vercoe-Curtis 58, Will Ormiston 180, Brad Gordon 52, James Hook 29 R Sayed 6/123 RESULT: Parnell won outright by an innings and 86 runs

Captain Razin and his Day 2 men – unfortunately Will Ormiston, Giacomo and Prasant were absent – exams. Day 1 had been quite outstanding and impossible to emulate however our Reserves put in a very professional performance to clinch the outright. First, our batsmen took the score on to 345 – Brad Gordon looked in excellent touch till run out and James Hook also batted very well. All that whilst light drizzle fell and we all held our breath that the Umpire didn’t bring us off the field. The declaration came as the drizzle stopped and our bowlers didn’t have to worry about a wet ball. Neither Prasant nor Giacomo were available for Day 2 but Ed, Simon and James were equal to the task. Wickets fell regularly, Razin chipped in taking 2 and Shiran Chaturanga tidied it all up with a superb 5 over spell in taking 3/6. Great start to the 2 Dayers – keep up the good work!

Women’s Premier Reserve Grade – T20 Round 2. 9 November Parnell vs Mangere Pukapuka MANGERE PUKAPUKA 75/8 (14.2) R Kairua 30, R MacMillan 2/10 (2), A Drake 1/14 (2), P Beuvink 2/15 (3), H Patel 1/11 (2), A Wijffels 2/8 (2) PARNELL 76/3 (12) A Drake 28 RESULT: Parnell won by 5 wickets A very solid win to the Team and wonderful to see it carrying on it’s success of last season!

Men’s 3rd Grade – PCC “Thirds” – Two Day Chmpionship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Grafton United at Orakei Domain 1 GRAFTON UNITED 134/10 (52.2) Simon Walker 3/22 incl. hat trick (8), Mehul Chhagan 1/26 (9), Angus Olliver 1/14 (8), Callum McCarthy 1/2 (5), Harry Prince 2/15 (8) Cam Rope 2/49 (12) & 201/10 (45.2) T Drumm 59, F Dudson 30, K Patel 24, Alex Knapman 2/40 (12), Kelly Haldane 2/25 (6), Tim Johnston 1/37 (7), Cam Rope 3/45 (12) Harman Minhas 2/19 (3) PARNELL 152/10 (49.5) Absar ul Hasan 70, Quin Sorensen 22, K Patel 4/25 & 184/4 (28.3) Luke Trimming 59, Absar ul Hasan 31, Quin Sorensen 31, Luke O’Toole 42* RESULT: Parnell won outright by 6 wickets A certain sense of revenge for our lads as they had fallen 6 runs short to the same opposition in the previous game, a One Dayer, the week before. Moreover, Grafton United had fielded several lads who had grown up through Parnell Junior ranks – Josh Brazendale, Shannon Wimilaratne and Flynn Dudson who had scored 24, 61 and 75. This time these lads scored only 9 & 0, 0 & 0 and 30 as they lost outright. Simon Walker’s hat trick in Grafton’s first innings set the scene and Absar’s 70 crucial in our gaining a first innings lead which wasn’t achieved until early on Day 2.lead. By then Alex Knapman had replaced Simon (elevated to the Reserves) and he was just as effective. Fast induckers rewarded Alex with two wickets in the opening over. Drumm and Dudson staged a recovery adding 70 but from there wickets fell steadily and we were left to score 184. Luke Trimming and Absar knocked up 84 for the 1st wicket in only 13 overs and then Quin and Luke O’Toole carried on the good work. Quin left at 146 but Luke saw us through hitting his undefeated 42 off only 26 balls. A very satisfactory outright win by 6 wickets.

Men’s 7th Grade – PCC “Fourths” aka “Prunes” – Two Day Chmpionship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore HOWICK PAKURANGA 141/10 (42.2) K Webster 40, James Partridge 1/29 (10), Alex Knapman 4/35 (13) Lance Pooley 4/42 (10), J Baron 1/15 (5) & 151/8 (62) R Greenwood 26, T Gadkari 46*, Sam Noland 2/19 (6), J Penrose 1/27 (11 Rudi Bisschoff 4/35 (18), Lance Pooley 1/18 (5) PARNELL 207/10 (58) J Dohnt 29, J Baron 26, A Kumar 50, M Araujo 26 Wes van Wyk 28 C Attwood 3/31 RESULT: Match Drawn – 1st Innings points to Parnell Another excellent result even though an outright wasn’t gained. HP had got off to a goood start on Day 1 reaching 131 for just 3 down. Then Alex, just arrived from Scotland and making his debut for Parnell, changed ends and, in tandem with Lance, cleaned out the remaining 7 batsmen for only another 10 runs. Solid top order batting secured an eventual lead of 66 and then the possibility of an outright. At 83/8 this seemed inevitable but wasn’t to be as stout resistance came from Attwood (8* from 91 balls) and Gadkari – batting no. 10 who’s 46* took 96 balls! This unbroken stand of 68 thwarted us despite a long spell from Rudi who had replaced Alex (elevated to our Thirds).

One Day Grades – Saturday 9 November 1A Grade - Parnell Kings vs GraftonUnited Tigers at Madill’s Farm PARNELL 228/9 (40) Ankit 60, Aldrin 47 GRAFTON UNITED 170/10 (31) Karthik 4/24. Aaron 3/27 RESULT: Parnell Kings won by 58 runs PAVAN GURURAJA reporting: Second game of the season against the Grafton Tigers at Madill’s Farm. King‘s lost the toss and was put to bat by the Tigers. Aldrin and Mani opened the innings. Aldrin started the innings with a on the covers and got off to a steady start. Mani played some good shots and was out for 16. Chak joined Aldrin, but shortly dismissed by a quicker delivery. Aldrin followed him and was out for a well-made 47. Ankit played sensibly putting away the bad deliveries and rotating the strike. Karthik and Roopesh fell for the spinners trap and lost their wickets. Ankit and Pavan played well to steady the innings, which was capitalised by Arul, Aaron and Sowndar to finish the innings. Kings made 228 and lost 9 wickets. Ankit was out for a well-made 60. Kings got of to a good start with an early wicket. Aaron bowled in the right areas to keep the batsmen guessing and awarded with 3 wickets at the end. Opponents came back strong and built good partnerships. Kings still managed to get regular wickets by disciplined bowling and awesome fielding. Sowndar, Karthik, Roopesh and Aldrin all bowled very well to restrict the opponents to 170. Karthik bowled exceptionally well to finish 4/24.

Bert Sutcliffe’s 67 Year old Record Broken – Otago’s 7th Wicket

OLD RECORD: 1952/53 182 for 7th wicket Bert Sutcliffe 385 and Alan Gilbertson 29 Otago vs Canterbury NEW RECORD: 2019/20 190 for 7th wicket Nathan Smith 114 and Michael Rippon 98 Otago vs Northern Districts

Otago Daily Times – 11 November: It takes a mighty effort to remove the likes of the incomparable Bert Sutcliffe from a page in the almanack. But that is exactly what Nathan Smith and Michael Rippon managed on Saturday.

Bert Sutcliffe at , date unknown.PHOTO: THE EVENING STAR/ALLIED PRESS FILES The pair combined to set an Otago first-class seventh-wicket record for the province with a stand of 190 at the . They eclipsed the previous mark of 182, posted by Sutcliffe and Alan Gilbertson, at in December 1952. Records come and go but this one had stood for 67 years. And what made it so special was that was the innings in which Sutcliffe went on to score 385.

It is still the highest first-class innings in New Zealand and part of the game's folklore.

Smith had double the reason to celebrate. He brought up his maiden first-class hundred during the mammoth partnership.

"It was a pretty special moment ... because family were down as well, so it was nice to celebrate it with them," Smith said.

"I was [extremely nervous]. I'd never been there before, so it was about calming myself down for a good period of time and just trying to watch the ball, really.

"I tried to keep it nice and boring and play nice and straight." The 21-year-old right-hander reached the milestone with a lovely on-drive back past the bowler for four. He was eventually undone on 114 while playing aggressively in search of an extra batting bonus point for his side.

Rippon's knock of 74 not out was a career-best as well. Poor weather has probably robbed him of the opportunity to push for a maiden hundred, though.

"It is pretty cool to break a record but it is also nice to put ourselves into a good position for the rest of the game," Rippon said. Northern Districts had reduced the home side to 107 for six when the pair came together. Black Caps left-armer had bowled some tremendous spells and the Volts were badly in need a decent partnership.

"We were not looking good. But I guess it was about breaking it down and achieving small goals over by over and ball by ball," Rippon said.

"The more time you spent in the middle, the easier it got."

Initially, the pair found batting tough.

"The ball was reversing and Neil Wagner was coming in hard and he bowled a really good spell," he said.

"Joe Walker was getting some nice turn and it wasn't easy.”

Volts coach Rob Walter said for the pair to "keep going and going and put together 190 was a hell of an effort".

"I've been very vocal in my thoughts about him [Smith] as a batter. I think technically he is as strong as anyone in the team, so to have him walking out at No7 adds real strength and depth to your batting line-up.”

"And it is awesome to see a young guy get a first-class hundred early in his career and in tough conditions and in conditions that tested his technique," Walter said.

"I want to allow him to progress and gain experience at the rate that he is meant to.

"If he continues to do things like he did [on Saturday] then the journey will take care of itself."

AND FROM YOUR EDITOR: Yes, congratulations to Nathan Smith, a 21 year old born in who chalked up his first 1st Class . And Michael Rippon, a 28 year old, born in Capetown and, being on a Dutch passport has represented the in ODIs since 2013. Rippon, an all rounder, bowls left arm “chinamen” and, before coming to Otago, played 1st Class cricket for Western Province and Sussex. Michael was schooled at Rondebosch Boys’ High as were Ian and Jonathan Trott – in fact Ian Trott played hockey with his father. And Michael has been coached by Ian. In addition to his 98, Rippon with his “chinamen” took 9 wickets in this game against ND 4/60 (25.1) and 5/33 (27). – Records are made to be broken and, I am sure, Bert and Alan would both have been amazed that their 7th wicket record lasted as long as 67 years. Bert Sutcliffe remained a staunch Parnell man all his life and your Editor played 3 seasons with Alan Gilbertson, for Old Boys’ CC, Invercargill, in the mid/late 1960s. Alan was a real gentleman of the old school - he was in his 40s when I knew him but he was still an excellent batsman and still an outstanding fieldsman at cover – a great deal faster to the ball than most half his age. I once asked “Gilbey” what it was like to bat with Bert and for his comments on their record partnership – his reply was “after the 5th or 6th ball of the over one put head down and ran like hell to the other end”. Essential that Sutcliffe retained the strike and he was so dominant at the crease that he did so with ease. Alan’s 29 was 2nd highest score in Otago’s total of 500.

AND, FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION WHO BELIEVE OUR ONLY GREAT BATSMEN HAVE BEEN AND , I have just purchased this book, written by Bill Francis, from Ronald Cardwell’s Cricket Publishing Company, a great read. The title, rightly, highlights the fact that Stewie Dempster’s record in his 10 Tests – notwithstanding Steve Smith – still puts him SECOND ONLY TO BRADMAN.

BUT READ ON:

Ray Robinson, the Australian journalist and author, in “Green Sprigs” (1955), considered BERT SUTCLIFFE COMPARABLE TO BRADMAN

It is all very subjective and totally dependant on what period of a batsman’s career is considered. Over his whole career Bradman’s record is incomparable – no one comes within light years of his 94.99 average. Sadly, Dempster only played 10 Tests in all but averaged 65.72.

BERT SUTCLIFFE: just look at some of his 1st Class or Test accomplishments: • 197 & 128 for Otago vs MCC, March 1947 just back from serving with J Force • 58 & 32 on Test debut vs England – week after his 197 and 128 vs MCC • 2627 runs for NZ in England, 1949 Season – second only to Bradman for a touring cricketer • 230* for NZ vs India, 1955 • 355 for Otago vs Auckland, 1949/50 • 385 for Otago vs Canterbury, 1952/53 – for many years, until beaten by , the highest by a left hander • 44 centuries including 8 of 200+ • 58 century partnerships incl., for the 1st wicket for Auckland with DD Taylor, 220 and 286 in the one match vs Canterbury 1948/49

Remember, in an earlier Update, I had pointed out that Bert Sutcliffe, in his first 10 Test innings had scored more runs (617) than Bradman (607). And his two innings immediately before his Test debut he scored 197 and 128 for Otago vs MCC. Very good reason for Ray Robinson to make his comment!

POSTSCRIPT For Parnell CC, Bert’s club: 1938/39 to 1948/49 2675 runs 60.75 average 8 centuries 179* highest score
