Weekly Update – 24 October 2009 Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.174 – Black Caps Pipped Again Unbelievable – Deja Vue – Black Caps Pipped Again! Call it what you will, the Tie at Eden Park on Sunday, in the series deciding 5th T20, was the most extraordinary coincidence. Again, NZ lost fewer wickets to England, the winner of the “super over”. But who makes the rules by which these games are played? Consider these logics: CRICKET IS A GAME BETWEEN TWO TEAMS – OBJECT TO SCORE MORE RUNS/TAKE MORE WICKETS THAN THE OTHER TEAM • Why then not award the game, when tied, to the Team that loses the fewer wickets – on this basis NZ would have won the ICC CWC (lost only 8 wickets to England’s 10) and yesterday’s T20 (T11) – NZ lost 5, England 7 wickets. • But why, in the ICC CWC, was England able to contest the “super over” – it had lost all 10 wickets. Should have been end of story! • Or, if a “super over” has to be bowled, then wouldn’t it be more logical for the batsmen to be those who were not out or still to bat? Once out means OUT? And bowl only a bowler who hadn’t used his T20 quota. In the interest of fairness and logic! Having got that angst off my chest, what a remarkable game yesterday! Talk of coincidences – and quite extraordinary that the game even took place. We had waited all day Saturday for the forecast rain which, most thankfully, held off. And Sunday morning was fine – when the rain did come, around 11am, it came! The whole of Auckland was blanketed – not too heavy but steady and the wind had dropped. Congratulations to the crowd that still came to Eden Park – last Wednesday, pre-sales indicated a 14,000 attendance but further sales, including walk-up, stalled due to the appalling weather forecast. But 9,000 still turned up in the hope of play. And play we got – amazing! Great credit to the Match Officials and Eden Park Groundstaff – absolute minimum of mucking about, skies started to clear around 3pm and, by 3.30 “FIRST BALL 4.00PM” came up on the Big Screen. Covers came off, a quick sweep of the outfield and we had a T11 – and what a game! “Super Over” – Chris Jordan to bowl the last ball ball. Another win to England but …….! ANOTHER MARVELLOUS GAME OF CRICKET AT NEW ZEALAND’S NATIONAL STADIUM ROLL ON THE TESTS! Another Outstanding Weekend for Parnell Teams Men’s Premier Grade – Hedley Howarth Trophy, Two Day Championship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Cornwall at Cornwall Park 1. PARNELL 369/9 dec. (87) Ben Rainger 40, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 95, Aniket Parikh 107, O Shepperson 4/80 (12) CORNWALL 169/10 (59.3) S Nair 51, L Dasent 48*, Fanie de Villiers 42/5 (15), Josh Fisher 48/4 ((14) & following on 123/3 (34) A Dhadwal 87* RESULT: Match Drawn – 1st Innings points to Parnell Fanie de Villiers leading the Team from the field after taking 5/42. Don’t forget Josh Fisher – at one point he had 4/14 Cornwall was then asked to follow on. Our very solid start, 369 on Day 1., continued with a top perfomance in the field on Day 2. Cornwall beginning at 20/1 lost it’s 2nd wicket at 54 and was soon 94/7. Main destroyer to this point was Josh Fisher who had taken 4/14. Pressure continued with our pace attack of Josh, Ganesh, Ollie and, particularly, Fanie bowling well though Marra and Dasent – former St Peter’s lad – dug in for a time. It was Fanie who cleaned up finally and gained his second 5 For in the space of 3 weeks against his former clubmates. Following on, Nair was snared early by Ollie but the Dhadwells stuck and though Jack Parsons and Andy Lane captured wickets, and Flynn bowled a solitary maiden over, the match ended in a draw with Cornwall still 77 in arrears. Fanie Josh Two shots of Harry Miller – he took 5 catches in Cornwall’s 1st innings, 2 in the 2nd Women’s Premier Grade – Prichard Cup – One Day (50 over) Championship Round 2. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Cornwall at Thos. Bloodworth Park 1. AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 382/4 (50) K Gurrey 149* (105), A Peterson 121 (98), J Prasad 53 (46), Jess Barker 2/41 (6), Gemma Lord 1/59 (8), Sam Brake-Howard 1/50 (7) PARNELL 91/10 (28) Steph Carr 23 (35), A Eastwood 6/24 (10) RESULT: Auckland University won by 191 runs A superb opening partnership of 257 between Gurrey and Peterson scuttled all Parnell hopes. Facing a massive total our girls, apart from Steph, faded but they still came back to the Club with a smile after the game. We wish them well for next Saturday when they meet Takapuna – a very tough start to the season having to meet the 3 top teams first up. Olivia Lobb – contracted to ND Shriya Naidu selected for ND squad Yaz Khareem selected for Akld Hearts A Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – President’s Cup, Two Day Major Championship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Papatoetoe at Shore Road Reserve 1. PAPATOETOE 118/10 N Deol 35, Prasant Dhanjee 5/24, Ed Bartlett 1/43, Giacomo Lamplough 3/34 Razin Bharde 1/7 & 141/10 P Luthra 30, Ed Bartlett 3/44 (10), Simon Walker 1/13 (4), James Hook 1/20 (6) Razin Bharde 2/31 (5), Shiran Chaturanga 3/6 (5) PARNELL 345/7 dec Matt Vercoe-Curtis 58, Will Ormiston 180, Brad Gordon 52, James Hook 29 R Sayed 6/123 RESULT: Parnell won outright by an innings and 86 runs Captain Razin and his Day 2 men – unfortunately Will Ormiston, Giacomo and Prasant were absent – exams. Day 1 had been quite outstanding and impossible to emulate however our Reserves put in a very professional performance to clinch the outright. First, our batsmen took the score on to 345 – Brad Gordon looked in excellent touch till run out and James Hook also batted very well. All that whilst light drizzle fell and we all held our breath that the Umpire didn’t bring us off the field. The declaration came as the drizzle stopped and our bowlers didn’t have to worry about a wet ball. Neither Prasant nor Giacomo were available for Day 2 but Ed, Simon and James were equal to the task. Wickets fell regularly, Razin chipped in taking 2 and Shiran Chaturanga tidied it all up with a superb 5 over spell in taking 3/6. Great start to the 2 Dayers – keep up the good work! Women’s Premier Reserve Grade – T20 Round 2. 9 November Parnell vs Mangere Pukapuka MANGERE PUKAPUKA 75/8 (14.2) R Kairua 30, R MacMillan 2/10 (2), A Drake 1/14 (2), P Beuvink 2/15 (3), H Patel 1/11 (2), A Wijffels 2/8 (2) PARNELL 76/3 (12) A Drake 28 RESULT: Parnell won by 5 wickets A very solid win to the Team and wonderful to see it carrying on it’s success of last season! Men’s 3rd Grade – PCC “Thirds” – Two Day Chmpionship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Grafton United at Orakei Domain 1 GRAFTON UNITED 134/10 (52.2) Simon Walker 3/22 incl. hat trick (8), Mehul Chhagan 1/26 (9), Angus Olliver 1/14 (8), Callum McCarthy 1/2 (5), Harry Prince 2/15 (8) Cam Rope 2/49 (12) & 201/10 (45.2) T Drumm 59, F Dudson 30, K Patel 24, Alex Knapman 2/40 (12), Kelly Haldane 2/25 (6), Tim Johnston 1/37 (7), Cam Rope 3/45 (12) Harman Minhas 2/19 (3) PARNELL 152/10 (49.5) Absar ul Hasan 70, Quin Sorensen 22, K Patel 4/25 & 184/4 (28.3) Luke Trimming 59, Absar ul Hasan 31, Quin Sorensen 31, Luke O’Toole 42* RESULT: Parnell won outright by 6 wickets A certain sense of revenge for our lads as they had fallen 6 runs short to the same opposition in the previous game, a One Dayer, the week before. Moreover, Grafton United had fielded several lads who had grown up through Parnell Junior ranks – Josh Brazendale, Shannon Wimilaratne and Flynn Dudson who had scored 24, 61 and 75. This time these lads scored only 9 & 0, 0 & 0 and 30 as they lost outright. Simon Walker’s hat trick in Grafton’s first innings set the scene and Absar’s 70 crucial in our gaining a first innings lead which wasn’t achieved until early on Day 2.lead. By then Alex Knapman had replaced Simon (elevated to the Reserves) and he was just as effective. Fast induckers rewarded Alex with two wickets in the opening over. Drumm and Dudson staged a recovery adding 70 but from there wickets fell steadily and we were left to score 184. Luke Trimming and Absar knocked up 84 for the 1st wicket in only 13 overs and then Quin and Luke O’Toole carried on the good work. Quin left at 146 but Luke saw us through hitting his undefeated 42 off only 26 balls. A very satisfactory outright win by 6 wickets. Men’s 7th Grade – PCC “Fourths” aka “Prunes” – Two Day Chmpionship Round 1. 2 & 9 November Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore HOWICK PAKURANGA 141/10 (42.2) K Webster 40, James Partridge 1/29 (10), Alex Knapman 4/35 (13) Lance Pooley 4/42 (10), J Baron 1/15 (5) & 151/8 (62) R Greenwood 26, T Gadkari 46*, Sam Noland 2/19 (6), J Penrose 1/27 (11 Rudi Bisschoff 4/35 (18), Lance Pooley 1/18 (5) PARNELL 207/10 (58) J Dohnt 29, J Baron 26, A Kumar 50, M Araujo 26 Wes van Wyk 28 C Attwood 3/31 RESULT: Match Drawn – 1st Innings points to Parnell Another excellent result even though an outright wasn’t gained.

  • Annual Report 2018
Annual Report 2018 th 138 Annual Report of the Otago Rugby Football Union 1 | P a g e Otago Rugby Football Union Inc. th Notice is hereby given that the 138 Annual General Meeting of the Otago Rugby Football Union Incorporated will be held at Taieri Rugby Football Club, Peter Johnstone Park, Reid Avenue, Mosgiel on Wednesday 27th March 2019, beginning at 7.00pm. Richard Kinley General Manager 2 | P a g e President’s Report This is my third year as President of the ORFU and from an overall perspective of Otago Rugby, this year would clearly be the most satisfying. While there remain a number of challenges in our game right across the board both at provincial and at a national level, there are many positive aspects which we should all enjoy and continue to celebrate. Of the 33 clubs in the province, I managed to visit 28 of them and every one was an absolute pleasure. In addition, the many secondary school games, weight grade fixtures, tournaments, representative fixtures, meetings, prizegivings, sponsors functions and a host of other events, has made this season a most enjoyable experience. One aspect that I would like to comment on is the secondary school rugby scene. Richard Kinley and I took the opportunity to meet with the Chairman of the Canterbury Secondary Schools Rugby Council during a visit to Christchurch. While I will not go into the details of the meeting, it became very evident that the current systems we have in place for administering and managing the game at this level in Otago are very sound.

  • Weekly Update – 24 October 2009
Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.
