Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 The Hedley Howarth Trophy is Ours at Last! Our victorious Premier Team at Orakei Domain last Saturday Auckland University CC defeated by an innings and 168 runs and over 21 points clear of 2nd placed Takapuna CC, Parnell, as part of Eastern Districts CC, last won the 2 Day Championship in 1965/66 and, in Parnell’s own name, way back in 1948/49. The ‘48/49 Team was exceptionally strong as it contained Merv Wallace, Bert Sutcliffe and Johnny Hayes. These three were selected, that season for NZ’s 1949 tour of England. Wallace started the tour in exceptional form and almost scored 1000 in May. Sutcliffe then scored over 2600 runs for the season, a total only exceeded by Don Bradman as an overseas tourist. Hayes, the fastest bowler in the side, was injured early on the tour and it wasn’t till some years later that he fulfilled his great promise. The 1965/66 Team, captained by Ross Morgan, contained Geoff Rabone, Terry Jarvis, and Bob Sutton. The first three all played for NZ and Sutton, a fast left armer was exceedingly unlucky not to have made the Test side. 1965/66 - Eastern Districts, 2 Day Champions 1. 2. It largely flew under the radar with the other events last week – the Black Caps, Parnell’s capture of the 2 Dayers and Colin Munro’s monumental 281 in this game including 23 sixes, a World record! But it was a sensational effort on Lockie’s part in CD’s second innings that fully justified him, finally, being included in the Aces line up. Despite Lockie’s absences from Parnell’s Prems (he still took 20 wickets at 11.95 for us), our Prem bowlers have still succeeded wonderfully well. But to opposing sides the threat of Lockie turning up has been a very real worry to them. His speed is exceptional and he is feared! A dream end to a marvellous season. This time, unlike some other instances tis season, the batting stood up after the bowlers had perfomed superbly. Tim played the rock, totally assured and Ben, at the other end, continued in his blistering way. A rain delayed start cut an hour off play but it didn’t deter the batsmen. With the pitch playing so well they totally dominated the morning session until Ben was bowled middle stump forcing the pace. Tom Talbot hit two quick fours but Tim was finally caught behind and University, to their huge relief, left the field following Dave’s declaration. A sound start took the score to 31 when Walshy struck for the first time, further consolidation but a few experimental bowling changes, aided by some brilliant catching, saw the score go from 96/2 to128/5. First Chappie removed Dench and then the prized wickets of Rowland, Umasuthan and Ellison fell to George Harper and Kirk Bunting. Kirk, 2 wickets ….!! Then Walshy, backed up by Rav, returned to wreck further havoc and, finally, Skipper Dave took the final two wickets to close the season with an outstanding innings victory.
