Absolute star, and MVP, on the day was captain Sam Brake-Howard who lead the bowling and fielding effort with 4/39 off 10 overs and 2 catches in the field including a massive diving effort to dismiss the Howick Pakuranga captain. Sam followed this up by anchoring the batting innings with 18 n.o. off 88 balls after coming in at number 8 with Parnell in a deep hole having lost many quick wickets. Parnell won the toss and elected to bowl on a damp pitch – good toss to win. Parnell had Howick Pakuranga 7/36 with only Howick Pakuranga captain Josie Penfold scoring with 39 runs before being caught spectacularly by Sam Brake- Howard. Shriya Naidu bowled fantastically, being very difficult to get away and was rewarded with 3/14 off 7 overs. Lexy Basset, in only her second game for the Premiers, bowled superbly with 2/22 off 4 overs. The wicket had played awkwardly all day with balls skidding on and nothing much had changed when Parnell went into bat. Parnell were on life support at 6/15 but Shriya Naidu, who came at No 4, and scored 14 off 61 was joined by Sam Brake-Howard who jointly dug in and eked out the runs still with plenty of overs remaining. When Shriya was dismissed with score on 47 there was still of plenty of work required. Renee Macmillan with 2 runs off 15 and then Shannon Carr 7 n.o. off 34 balls supported Sam to the winning score. The game was full of tension and excitement, right to the end. A great day of cricket and a big, big day for Parnell Womens cricket. The win was the first for the Premier Womens team this year and was built on grit and determination. Going forth there is belief Parnell can win in this division and the confidence from this win is priceless. SUPERB BOWLING FIGURES Shriya Naidu 7 overs 3 mdns 14 runs 3 wkts Sam Brake-Howard 10 1 39 4 Lexy Bassett 4 0 22 2 Rav Pratap 4 0 5 1 Craig Speakman captured some of the major moments: . 1. Sam who, with Shriya broke the back of Howick Pak’s innings. 2. Olivia behind the stumps took 2 catches Ravindra chipped in with a wicket – one of Sam’s 2 catches, and that celebration! . 4 shots of Lexy Bassett bowling – 2/22, a great effort in just her 2nd Premier game 1. Shriya Naidu batting – her 61 ball 14 was crucial. In at 7/3 ( soon to be 15/6) & took the score to 47 when she was 7th out 2. Sam batting on her way to 18* and the winning of the game 3. Shannen Carr who joined Sam at 55/8 and held on with her to gain the win 1. Sam the heroine – 18* off 88 balls saw us home, photo shows her being acclaimed appropriately! 2. And a hug from her Granny – Brenda Howard, long time stalwart of Suburbs New Lynn CC and many years their Premier Scorer, pre-dating Ian Donnelly (amazing that someone could pre-date “Donners” – bet Brenda would have had no problem with on line scoring!!) EDITOR’S NOTE: One of the most pleasing aspects of this season is how these Premier Women players have become part of the Club, despite the adversity of being winless in previous weeks. They regularly join with the other teams back at the Clubhouse and their presence is a joy to us all. Now a win and best wishes to the Team for further successes before the season ends. Mens’ Premier Grade Draw for the Remainder of the Season 10 & 11 March vs. Grafton United (& for the James Russell Trophy) at Victoria Park 1. 17 & 24 March vs. Takapuna (& for the Ken Robertson Cup) at Shore Road 1. Men’s Premier Grade Saturdays 24 Feb. & 3 March Parnell vs Cornwall at Shore Road Reserve 1. CORNWALL 321/9 dec. M Guptill-Bunce 54, S Crooks 98, B Barnard 55, F de Villiers 34, Josh Fisher 5/88, Dean van Deventer 3/51 PARNELL 336/8 Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 33 (77), Ben Rainger 67 (93), Mitch McCann 24 (66) Andy Lane 28 (61), Brad Rodden 40 (102), Dean van Deventer 61* (80), Josh Fisher 50* (53) RESULT: MATCH DRAWN - 1st innings points to Parnell Dean van Deventer 61* and Josh Fisher 50* - unbroken 9th wicket stand of 95 to gain 1st innings points DAY 2: Fine, after a week of high humidity and frequent showers – nightmare conditions for a groundsman. To the latter’s credit the pitch was hard with good bounce, as it had been on Day 1. Resuming on 44/0, Ben Rainger and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter played sensibly and with some aggression. The score mounted til Ben was struck on the helmet. After treatment at the crease he continued but, shortly after, was caught for 67 with the total 97. From there we failed to establish any further genuine partnerships. Flynn went at 113, Mitch at 139 and, whilst Andy and Brad looked promising, Andy departed just 38 runs later – 177/4. Then Jesse caught without scoring and, worse , Brad was lbw - 212/6.- and 110 still needed. Further trouble, Skipper Dave was lbw – 221/7. Enter Harry Miller on Premier debut to join Dean and together they took the total to 241 when Harry was caught – Brian Barnard’s 4th catch!! At 241/8 desparate measures were needed – Josh joining Dean and, finally, a partnership. Through positive batting they soon established some ascendency over the attack and driving strongly took the initiative. Runs came freely and whilst the situation was tense both batsmen kept their cool. Dean’s 50 was achieved, Cornwall’s total was passed, much to the relief of the large crowd of supporters, and we batted on till Josh reached his 50. Great effort on the part of Dean and Josh, an unbroken partnership of 95. Maybe, Josh gets a lift in the batting order? Craig’s photos below emphasise the value of partnerships: Ben Rainger and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter - 97 for the 1st wicker Josh Fisher (left) & Dean van Deventer – a punishing, unbroken 95 partnership for the 9th wicket brough us home Men’s Premier Reserve Grade Saturdays 24 Feb. & 3 March PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA at Orakei Domain 1, PARNELL 248/10 Will Ormiston 40, Cam Gibbons 53,..James Bevin 27, Christy O’Brien 53 50/2 Will Ormiston 20, Cam Rope 18* TAKAPUNA 116/10 Hamish Robertson 2/59 (19), Sam Petersen 2/22 (11), Simon Walker 3/17 (8) & 181/10 Simon Walker 3/18 (10), Hamish Robertson 2/60 (15), Razin Bharde 4/40 (14) RESULT: PARNELL WON OUTRIGHT BY 8 WICKETS COACH “VICAR” ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: What a memorable day for the club "3rd 03 2018" congrats to the Senior Ladies team on their first victory of the Season and all the other teams that recorded wins. PCC V Takapuna - Recap of Day 1, Feb 23rd PCC 248 all out, Takapuna 56 for 4 wickets DAY 2: Resuming their innings Takapuna were bowled out for 116. PCC bowling: Hamish Robertson: 19 overs 3 wickets for 59 runs Sam Peterson: 2 wickets for 22 runs off 11 overs Simon Walker: 3 wickets for 17 runs off 8 overs We asked Takapuna to follow on needing 134 runs to avoid an innings defeat. We bowled them out for 181 leaving us 50 runs to win outright. Bowling: Simon Walker bowled another fine spell taking 3 wickets for 18 off 10 overs and doing what every fast bowler is asked to do; knocking the top order over.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.174 – Black Caps Pipped Again Unbelievable – Deja Vue – Black Caps Pipped Again! Call it what you will, the Tie at Eden Park on Sunday, in the series deciding 5th T20, was the most extraordinary coincidence. Again, NZ lost fewer wickets to England, the winner of the “super over”. But who makes the rules by which these games are played? Consider these logics: CRICKET IS A GAME BETWEEN TWO TEAMS – OBJECT TO SCORE MORE RUNS/TAKE MORE WICKETS THAN THE OTHER TEAM • Why then not award the game, when tied, to the Team that loses the fewer wickets – on this basis NZ would have won the ICC CWC (lost only 8 wickets to England’s 10) and yesterday’s T20 (T11) – NZ lost 5, England 7 wickets. • But why, in the ICC CWC, was England able to contest the “super over” – it had lost all 10 wickets. Should have been end of story! • Or, if a “super over” has to be bowled, then wouldn’t it be more logical for the batsmen to be those who were not out or still to bat? Once out means OUT? And bowl only a bowler who hadn’t used his T20 quota. In the interest of fairness and logic! Having got that angst off my chest, what a remarkable game yesterday! Talk of coincidences – and quite extraordinary that the game even took place. We had waited all day Saturday for the forecast rain which, most thankfully, held off. And Sunday morning was fine – when the rain did come, around 11am, it came! The whole of Auckland was blanketed – not too heavy but steady and the wind had dropped.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.

  • From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 The Hedley Howarth Trophy is Ours at Last! Our victorious Premier Team at Orakei Domain last Saturday Auckland University CC defeated by an innings and 168 runs and over 21 points clear of 2nd placed Takapuna CC, Parnell, as part of Eastern Districts CC, last won the 2 Day Championship in 1965/66 and, in Parnell’s own name, way back in 1948/49. The ‘48/49 Team was exceptionally strong as it contained Merv Wallace, Bert Sutcliffe and Johnny Hayes. These three were selected, that season for NZ’s 1949 tour of England. Wallace started the tour in exceptional form and almost scored 1000 in May. Sutcliffe then scored over 2600 runs for the season, a total only exceeded by Don Bradman as an overseas tourist. Hayes, the fastest bowler in the side, was injured early on the tour and it wasn’t till some years later that he fulfilled his great promise. The 1965/66 Team, captained by Ross Morgan, contained Geoff Rabone, Terry Jarvis, and Bob Sutton. The first three all played for NZ and Sutton, a fast left armer was exceedingly unlucky not to have made the Test side. 1965/66 - Eastern Districts, 2 Day Champions 1. 2.
