Women’s Premier Grade – Pritchard Cup, Limited Overs Championship Manager Geoff Mills Reporting on the Team’s 1st Win: The Parnell Womens Premier team have had some frustratingly close loses lately but this Saturday it all came together with a brilliant win over Howick Pakuranga. Absolute star, and MVP, on the day was captain Sam Brake-Howard who lead the bowling and fielding effort with 4/39 off 10 overs and 2 catches in the field including a massive diving effort to dismiss the Howick Pakuranga captain. Sam followed this up by anchoring the batting innings with 18 n.o. off 88 balls after coming in at number 8 with Parnell in a deep hole having lost many quick wickets. Parnell won the toss and elected to bowl on a damp pitch – good toss to win. Parnell had Howick Pakuranga 7/36 with only Howick Pakuranga captain Josie Penfold scoring with 39 runs before being caught spectacularly by Sam Brake- Howard. Shriya Naidu bowled fantastically, being very difficult to get away and was rewarded with 3/14 off 7 overs. Lexy Basset, in only her second game for the Premiers, bowled superbly with 2/22 off 4 overs. The had played awkwardly all day with balls skidding on and nothing much had changed when Parnell went into bat. Parnell were on life support at 6/15 but Shriya Naidu, who came at No 4, and scored 14 off 61 was joined by Sam Brake-Howard who jointly dug in and eked out the runs still with plenty of overs remaining. When Shriya was dismissed with score on 47 there was still of plenty of work required. Renee Macmillan with 2 runs off 15 and then Shannon Carr 7 n.o. off 34 balls supported Sam to the winning score. The game was full of tension and excitement, right to the end. A great day of cricket and a big, big day for Parnell Womens cricket. The win was the first for the Premier Womens team this year and was built on grit and determination. Going forth there is belief Parnell can win in this division and the confidence from this win is priceless.

Craig Speakman captured some of the major moments:

. 1. Sam who, with Shriya broke the back of Howick Pak’s innings. 2. Olivia behind the stumps took 2 catches

Ravindra chipped in with a wicket – one of Sam’s 2 catches, and that celebration!

. 4 shots of Lexy Bassett bowling – 2/22, a great effort in just her 2nd Premier game

1. Shriya Naidu batting – her 61 ball 14 was crucial. In at 7/3 ( soon to be 15/6) & took the score to 47 when she was 7th out 2. Sam batting on her way to 18* and the winning of the game 3. Shannen Carr who joined Sam at 55/8 and held on with her to gain the win

1. Sam the heroine – 18* off 88 balls saw us home, photo shows her being acclaimed appropriately! 2. And a hug from her Granny – Brenda Howard, long time stalwart of Suburbs New Lynn CC and many years their Premier Scorer, pre-dating Ian Donnelly (amazing that someone could pre-date “Donners” – bet Brenda would have had no problem with on line scoring!!)

EDITOR’S NOTE: One of the most pleasing aspects of this season is how these Premier Women players have become part of the Club, despite the adversity of being winless in previous weeks. They regularly join with the other teams back at the Clubhouse and their presence is a joy to us all. Now a win and best wishes to the Team for further successes before the season ends.

Dean van Deventer 61* and Josh Fisher 50* - unbroken 9th wicket stand of 95 to gain 1st innings points

DAY 2: Fine, after a week of high humidity and frequent showers – nightmare conditions for a groundsman. To the latter’s credit the pitch was hard with good bounce, as it had been on Day 1. Resuming on 44/0, Ben Rainger and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter played sensibly and with some aggression. The score mounted til Ben was struck on the helmet. After treatment at the crease he continued but, shortly after, was caught for 67 with the total 97. From there we failed to establish any further genuine partnerships. Flynn went at 113, Mitch at 139 and, whilst Andy and Brad looked promising, Andy departed just 38 runs later – 177/4. Then Jesse caught without scoring and, worse , Brad was lbw - 212/6.- and 110 still needed. Further trouble, Skipper Dave was lbw – 221/7. Enter Harry Miller on Premier debut to join Dean and together they took the total to 241 when Harry was caught – Brian Barnard’s 4th catch!! At 241/8 desparate measures were needed – Josh joining Dean and, finally, a partnership. Through positive batting they soon established some ascendency over the attack and driving strongly took the initiative. Runs came freely and whilst the situation was tense both batsmen kept their cool. Dean’s 50 was achieved, Cornwall’s total was passed, much to the relief of the large crowd of supporters, and we batted on till Josh reached his 50. Great effort on the part of Dean and Josh, an unbroken partnership of 95. Maybe, Josh gets a lift in the batting order? Craig’s photos below emphasise the value of partnerships:

Ben Rainger and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter - 97 for the 1st wicker

COACH “VICAR” ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: What a memorable day for the club "3rd 03 2018" congrats to the Senior Ladies team on their first victory of the Season and all the other teams that recorded wins. PCC V Takapuna - Recap of Day 1, Feb 23rd PCC 248 all out, Takapuna 56 for 4 wickets DAY 2: Resuming their innings Takapuna were bowled out for 116. PCC bowling: Hamish Robertson: 19 overs 3 wickets for 59 runs Sam Peterson: 2 wickets for 22 runs off 11 overs Simon Walker: 3 wickets for 17 runs off 8 overs We asked Takapuna to follow on needing 134 runs to avoid an innings defeat. We bowled them out for 181 leaving us 50 runs to win outright. Bowling: Simon Walker bowled another fine spell taking 3 wickets for 18 off 10 overs and doing what every fast bowler is asked to do; knocking the top order over. Hamish Robertson once again, bowled a long spell of, at times, unplayable left arm orthodox spin, collecting 2 for 60 off 15 overs. Razin Bharde also added to his seasons wicket tally, taking 4 wickets for 40 runs off his 14 overs. Another good spell of off-spin bowling, Razin is looking better with each over he is bowling now, after a slow start to the season. Good to have spin twins in the side this time of the year!! Takapuna's 5th wicket partnership added 84 with main contributor being former Black Cap Paul Hitchcock scoring 50 runs. PCC second innings: We knocked the runs off in 10.4 overs. Will Ormiston taking early control scoring 20 off 19 balls. Cam Ropey ending up 18 with Simon Walker earning promotion to No 3 to assist in finishing off the score in a hurry, scoring 8 off 8 balls. We closed the day with an outright victory by 8 wickets. Great effort all round lads; with Man of the Match going to Simon Walker for his bowling and his contribution with the bat. Bring on Cornwall next week. The Vicar signing off

And the win is achieved! MANAGER TOM BASSETT REPORTING Last Saturday, on Bloodworth 4, we hosted top-of-the-table Cornwall Green, unbeaten in both T20 and Limited Overs comps this season. Captain for the day, Ella Lambert, lost the toss and Cornwall elected the bat. The Cornwall openers set out very steadily putting on 44 for the first wicket at just under four an over.

However, a smart runout by Petra Beuvink and Ella Lambert gained the first wicket, which Ella quickly followed up with the second by clean bowling the Number Three Bat. At the drinks break, the Cornwall run rate had dropped to just over three, due to tight bowling and excellent ground fielding by the Prem Reserve players. The team knew that Cornwall would be looking to impose their innings after the break, but three quick wickets kept them in check: tight bowling and three catches to Isabel Mills, Alice Foster behind the stumps, and Anudi Thilakaratne. A late flurry lifted the Cornwall total to 138 off 35 overs: the target for Parnell, 139, at just under four an over. It was a great all-round bowling effort by Parnell with Ella Drumm (2 for 19 off five overs), Ella Lambert (1 for 19 off six), Hetali Patel (1 for 21 off six), Isabel Mills (1 for 21 off five) among the wickets. The Parnell chase started poorly with a wicket in the first over. But Emma Irwin and Anudi settled down to accumulate runs: very sensible batting without much risk, and took the score through to 49 in the twelfth over, right up with the run rate. After Anudi fell lbw, Hetali joined Emma to score a run-a-ball 40 run partnership. When Hetali was bowled the equation was 49 off 16.4 overs. Ella Drumm joined Emma and together they accelerated the scoring: it was smart cricket – good defence, waiting for the bad ball to score, good running between the wickets. In the 29th over it was all over: Ella hit the last ball over cover for six to go past the Cornwall total. Emma had anchored the innings and the run chase with great skill and composure to be there not out at the end for another 50. A great five wicket win to Parnell Prem Reserves, and great excitement to complete the match so well with an excellent all-round team effort. All this next door to the Prem Women, who were also completing a great day of their own with their win over Howick-Pakuranga on the Bloodworth Number One. This week we play (now) top-of-the-table North Shore at Devonport Domain.

Men’s Fourth Grade - “Thirds”

Rory O’Brien at full steam in his innings of 60* - Back & Front views Unfortunately the 3rds went down on first innings over the past couple of Saturdays at home (Shore Rd #2 artificial) to Birkenhead. We were put in to put on a scorcher and Birkenhead got off to something of a flyer before we were able to hold them back with Rory O'Brien being the most effective with 3 wickets. Elsewhere, Sidarth Kumar (young all-rounder) made his debut with a couple of wickets also. Eventually, we were unable to bowl them out in 60 overs and we were left with a chase of 301/7. We started promisingly that evening with Josh Milne and Absar Ul Hasan getting us through to 40 for the first wicket, before Gary Benipal was removed for a first ball duck. I came out the crease and hit 40 before hitting a catch back to the bowler 5 minutes prior to stumps. On the most recent Saturday, we lost Absar early before before Luke O'Toole came in with a quick cameo of a score in the 20s. Rory O'Brien was the mainstay however getting his highest score and first 50+ for the season (60 not out). Another debutant (Liam Kelly) also contributed alongside Rory with a good start (in the 30s), before eventually Rory ran out of partners and we were bowled out for 218 in 50.5 overs. We started the second innings promisingly, with Rory O'Brien opening the bowling with an early wicket, before Elliot Jaffe claimed 3 to leave them 20-4 early on. They then went into full defense mode and we were unable break the shackles. Leaving the game at 78-4, Birkenhead the first innings victors.

Men’s Senior 7th Grade 2 Day Championship - “Fourths”

Fourths v Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club, Senior 8th Grade at Madill’s Farm / Ti Rakau Park. - 2a Suburbs New Lynn 203 all out (60) Humphries 3/47 (20), Lim 1/20 (3) Parnell: 144 all out (48) Van Wyk (39), Bergman (24), Strange (20) Suburbs New Lynn 237/ 7 (44) Pooley 3/37 (9), Hay 1/18 (5)

Day One: We started the game with a couple of players down so we had 3 three fill ins, Suburbs batted first and we took early wickets and then a few calls went against us, and tensions grow between the teams. Humphries bowled 20 overs straight to restrict the run and took 3 wickets in the process at the other end Van Wyk bowled 15 over straight and held up his end for 58 runs4. As the innings continued the wicket fell and tension grow with the teams getting into a heated exchange over run out and LBW calls. In the 60th Over we finally dismissed the last batsman with the score on 203.

Grey Snr & our fill in Bergman opened the batting but it was not long before Grey was back in the sheds after trying to pull a wide ball, with another fill in Peplae following shortly after with the score on 15. This saw Van Wky join Bergman at the crease and they formed a good partnership of 30 before Bergman was out for 24 with the score on 44, Lim followed shortly after for 1. At the close of Play on day one Van Wyk & Hillman had carried the score to 74 with the loss of 4 wickets. During the week we were advised that our ground had changes to Ti Rakau Park due to the Round the Bays being held at Madhill Farm. Van Wyk and Hillman returned to the crease to continue their partnership, tension had carried over from the previous week and were still high between the teams, Suburbs started with some tight bowling and it was not long before Hillman was bowled for 15 with Van Wyk following shortly after for 39 with the score on 105. This is when it all boiled over and the Spirit of the game was brought into question, with Van Wyk being given a send off by Suburbs. Pooley came to the crease faced some tight inswing bowling that caught him in front and was given out LBW another send-off followed, after which the captains spoke and tensions subsided. Wickets continued to fall however a 10 wicket partnership between Strange & Noland of 30 carried us to 144 all out 59 runs short. Konara started perfectly taking wicket with the first ball of the innings, Hay followed this up shortly after taking a wicket for himself. Konara was struck down in his second over with a ankle injury so Pooley took over and took 3 vital wickets, Haran chimed in with a wicket. this saw them 6 down for just over 100. The rest of the day we bowled without luck trying a number of different combinations however their batsman rode their luck with a number of shots going past our fieldsmen. The game was called off just after 5:30 with Suburbs on 237 and the result put to bed. This game is one that got away I believe with our players letting some unsportsman like behaviour from our opponents bring us down, we have played hard all season and not allows ourselves to be brought down to other teams bad behaviours. A special mention needs to go out to Van Wyk for his 15 over of seam on day one and backed up by his 39 runs. Also Strange batted well in the later stages of our innings having a epiphany of how much better you can bat when you lift your front elbow, “Good on you Logan” keep up the great work.

Men’s One Day 1A Grade - Parnell “Kings”

Saturday, 3 March PARNELL “KINGS” SUBURBS NEW LYNN “TIGERS” at Eastdale Reserve

SUBURBS NEW LYNN 277/10 (39.4) Aaron 3/46, Sowndar 3/62, Arul 2/44 PARNELL “KINGS” 252/10 (39.4) Roopesh 51, Aaron 49*, Karthik 33

RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 3 WICKETS

CHAK ARUNACHALAM REPORTING ON BEHALF OF SKIPPER ROOPESH: We played against Suburbs New Lynn Tigers at Eastdale reserve this Saturday and there was drama right at the start as we were allocated wicket no2 but on arrival we saw it was not prepared. The home team checked with the club and it was not prepared as it was too damp but unfortunately no one was notified. They contacted ACA and an alternate artificial wicket was provided in the same ground but it was a very small ground. But we were eager to play and the game started a few minutes late. We won the toss and elected to field first. Aaron and Arul started the proceedings and boy they started brilliantly Aaron with his inswingers and Arul with his outswingers were toying with the batsman who struggled and Aaron got the first breakthrough. Sowndar came in next and got a wicket in his first over, but then things started to change as the ball lost its shine the batsmen used the smaller boundaries to their advantage and kept scoring at a good pace compensating for the slow start. Soon the run rate went above 6, but we regrouped and managed to dismiss them for 277 right in the last over. On reply Abrar and Chak started cautiously and kept up with the runrate but Abrar trying to up the ante was caught at slips and and AJ who came in next was dismissed soon after. Chak who got a start was run out going for second run. Roopesh and Karthik put on a decent partnership and Roopesh got to a run a ball 50, but with the RRR climbing up we lost a few wickets trying to go for the big shots. We needed a massive 100 runs of the last 10 overs and in came Aaron who smashed the ball to all parts of the ground, he showed no mercy on the bowlers and came very close but unfortunately he couldn't find support at the other end and was left stranded on 49 as we were all out for 252.

Saturday, 3 March PARNELL vs SRI LANKA at Orakei Domain 2a

SRI LANKA 183 Johnny 100, Mark Robinson 3/16 (6), Keith Monteiro 2/21 (6) Neil McCulloch 2/27 (5) PARNELL 163/10 (35) Mark Andrews 51, Greg James 23 RESULT: HOWICK PAKURANGA WON BY 8 WICKETS

MARK SMITH BACK REPORTING: We were looking forward to a game against Sri Lanka Legends, at Orakei, on grass. Although light on the batting front, we had a strong bowling contingent available, all salivating at the prospect of seam, spin and bounce, on grass. It was not too be. The groundsman had not marked out the grass pitch and we were put on the artificial. The opening bowlers James and Monteiro were not put off, getting 3 wickets in the first 3 overs. Robbo , in his new role as first change bowler, had his usual pace with swing and destroyed the middle stump of 3 batsmen. After 8 overs, Sri Lanka were 7 down, the PCC tails were high, what could go wrong. Sri Lanka then played their trump card - Johnny strode out hit the ball everywhere and walked back in with his 100. Sri Lanka had 183 runs on the board. Robbo 3 w 6 overs 16 runs Monteiro 2w 6 overs 21 runs Macculloch 2w 5 overs 27 runs

In reply, a relaxed confident start turned into a problem with 15 overs gone and only 60 runs. Wickets fell regularly. Full time 163 runs, 20 runs short. Mark Andrews top scored with 51 runs. A 23 run cameo in the tail by Greg James was not enough.

Grade 3s – Bert Sutcliffe Memorial Cup – Sunday, 4 March Parnell CC vs Auckland University CC Colin Maiden Park

Some great photos from a great day’s cricket – many thanks to the various contributers – One game each, Parnell won Cup on countback

Richard Walker, AUCC Manager, advises: The Bert Sutcliffe Memorial Trophy is a traditional fixture established in 1997/98 originally played for between AUCC and Cornwall by Years 2 and 3 Reps. Then in the 2009/10 season Cornwall decide not to have Rep teams at those younger grades so we switched to playing Parnell, then in 13/14 we mutually agreed to drop Year 2 Reps and since then it has been played for by Year 3 only. The results for all seasons are on our website at http://aucc.co.nz/bertsutcliffememorial.php . With Phil’s prior agreement we replaced the actual cup for this season’s fixture as the original one was in a very poor state, the silver plating having completely fallen off and the base metal had become stained and tarnished. We engraved it with just the fixtures between PCC and AUCC.

BERT SUTCLIFFE, Takapuna Grammar, Parnell, Auckland, Otago, New Zealand, was possibly the greatest batsman NZ has produced. Google him and see his outstanding record especially his great tour of England in 1949. Parnell was his first Club.

VSL News – Message from Peter McDermott Fingletoads to UK The Fingletoads Cricket Group are planning another trip to England in May next year coinciding with the Cricket World Cup that commences 30th May 2019.

The tour is along the lines of the previous tours the Fingletoads have undertaken in the United Kingdom and will be based on the following draft preparations.

We will be visiting some of our favourite p-laces in the Midlands and Southern Counties and will be limited to 36 people including escort/s (probably Dianne and me).

The tour will feature visits to some wonderful villages in England with delightful local Clubs hosting the group at iconic village and country cricket grounds.

The tour is open to players over the age of 50 and wives and partners are welcomed. The tour is inclusive not exclusive and players of all ages (over 50), ability, agility and experience are welcomed.

Our teams play for the love of the game, play to the best of our ability but emphasise total enjoyment with friendly competition against like- minded teams. Though we compete as best we can on the field major features of the tour including renewing old friendships, creating new ones and enjoying the great social opportunities that arise at the Clubs that host us and the places where we stay.

Umpires, supporters and family members are welcomed and in the past have been important members of the touring groups.

Prices to be advised and will not include international travel, nor travel from Bath at the conclusion of the tour. We will prepare international travel prices as optional extras if required and if we have enough people travelling to London together will organise a group travel arrangement. Internal travel is per an airconditioned luxury coach. Games will be at leading village and club fields that are typical of country cricket in England.

Most of the destinations, hotels, clubs and fields are known to us and provide an outstanding England touring experience. Some are still to be confirmed but arrangements are coming together really well.

We are seeking expressions of interest from past and current Fingletoads and for those who wish to join the Fingletoads for this tour (and possibly future tours to follow). The Fingletoads is a spin-off from the Auckland University Cricket Club and is open to any interested cricketers, supporters, officials, wives, partners and family who enjoy the thought of touring in a relaxed friendly group enjoying true Village Cricket and the delightful regions and Clubs that will be visited.

The Fingletoads have previously toured Australia (several times), USA (California a number of times and the East Coast), India, South Africa, Argentina/Peru/Chile, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and England (several times) and also Italy and France. There are currently approximately 200 people on the Fingletoads mailing list with players drawn from principally New Zealand but including regulars from USA, Barbados, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The tours are organised and managed by Dianne and Peter McDermott of Vintage Sport and Leisure Ltd (VSL) based in Orewa, north of Auckland. The tours are generally not-for-profit but VSL direct costs are included in the price. Our established networks ensure we get excellent fixtures at great venues at very reasonable cost. Our hotel bookings are managed by the VSL Office in London who negotiate very good rates at very well- chosen hotels that suit the requirements of our teams.
