Established 1967 President's Report It is my pleasure to report on another highly successful and buoyant year for the Australian Cricket Society in 2020-21. Despite all the challenges of lockdowns and the nation’s roller- coasting battle with Covid-19 we have been able to complete a dozen functions in the last 12 months, albeit the majority by ‘Zoom’, allowing us to make another substantial donation to our gold charity partners the Ponting Foundation. Among the Zoom guests were Test offspinner Ashley Mallett, authors David Frith, Dan Liebke, Craig Dodson and Wes Cusworth and leading Australian women Annabel Sutherland and Rachael Haynes. We were also pleased to hold our annual dinner, which Covid- 19 had precluded from being held in 2020. Cricket’s fraternity and friendships were never more important than in July when our dinner guest, Test fast bowler James Pattinson was in touch on the Wednesday, telling me that a personal issue precluded his attendance for the Friday.     CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

    Major D. G. M. MURPHY AM [1914 – 2005] Major Murphy was President of the Club 1954-55 Douglas Gordon Murtagh Murphy was born in Elsternwick, Victoria, on 17 August 1914 – son of Murtagh Robert Murphy and Kathleen Mary (née Bell). He had two siblings, Peter, and Margaret. He was educated at Tocumwal Public School, Ivanhoe Grammar School, and at Hay War Memorial High School (NSW). He was awarded a Scholarship to Sydney Teachers College, Sydney in 1930, and completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney in 1938. We thank the History Interest Group and other volunteers who have researched and prepared these Notes The series will be progressively expanded and developed. They had four children: • Diana Margaret (b.1944) who became a teacher. • Derek James Murtagh (b.1946) who became a stockbroker, barrister and businessman in both Hong Kong and Australia. • Susan Mary (b.1948) • Douglas Robert Murtagh (b.1951) who became a barrister and later Queens’s Counsel in Brisbane Douglas joined the Army and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1939. He initially served in the Infantry including Darwin Mobile Force; and later transferred to Signals (including in 3 Division in Melbourne in 1942) before appointment to staff positions.

    Bill Alley 1919-2004 • Played 1st Grade for Petersham and 12 matches for NSW • Professional boxer, winning his first 28 fights • Played County cricket for Somerset • Umpired 10 Test matches Bill Alley was a “legend” as a cricketer. Strangely for this left hand batsman and right arm medium pace bowler, his legendary status was earned in England after a solid grounding playing 12 times for New South Wales scoring three centuries. William Edward Alley was born at Hornsby on 3 February 1919 and went to school at Brooklyn near the Hawkesbury. His first job was on an oyster farm. He joined the Northern District Club and made his 1st Grade debut in 1938-39. After five seasons transferred to Petersham. In his early days with Petersham, he travelled to Sydney each Saturday morning returning on the paper train later that night or early Sunday morning. He was also an outstanding boxer who won his first 28 fights when he turned professional. A mishap in the nets while practising with Petersham where he sustained a broken jaw put paid to his boxing career however, and he thereafter concentrated on cricket. In his first season in 1943-44 with Petersham he scored 1,413 runs which remained the Sydney 1st Grade record for 63 years. He scored six centuries that season including tons against University (141*), North Sydney (119), Wests (100) and Mosman (111*) in successive matches. His best score was against Randwick when he hit 230 not out including 12 sixes and 21 fours with his first 100 coming in 59 minutes.
