Papatoetoe were unlucky but, really, it was our largess that allowed them every chance of winning – 18 wides and two 5s from overthrows! Exceedingly disappointing - just fortunate that the visitors failed, in the end, to take advantage! Wonderful game though! Tim McIntosh showed, yet again, his class, Ben Horne looked in excellent touch. Ben Rainger got a start and came back kicking himself after being stumped. But, from there, only the Skipper reached double figures – just. Papatoetoe got a sound start, stuttered in the 70s and then Money and Anand added 91 and looked to have taken the game. New lad Mitch McCann, from Te Puke, came on with his offies. Twenty three needed off 24 ball – Mitch then dismissed Money and then had Anand stumped. 17 still needed off 17 – Rav back on and Sohal left, another catch to Dave. Tense – 13 now required off 7 balls. A single - last over 12 off 6. Mitch – offies – first ball, Aujla drives, superb lofted hit over long off – 6! Equation alters drastically, 6 off 5. All quiet under the marquee – more scrambling, Aujla is caught behind the stumps by Ben. Another smite and Billy Sanger spills a catch at long on but saves a bounday – now 4 from 2. A single – 3 from 1 – all or nothing - another swipe, a mix of bat, pads, ball somewhere but not far, the batsmen scamper, Ben gathers the ball but holds it rather than attempt a run out and it is all over. Parnell just 1 run ahead and a most fortuitous winner! Ben and Tim – a sound start but the middle slipped and it was not a good day in the field. But well done on holding nerves when it came to the crunch! ######## Invitation to Members and Friends from President Rod Smith to a DINNER To be held in the Logan Campbell Room of the Northern Club, 19 Princes Street, Auckland, Friday, 28 October 2016, 7.00 for 7.30pm To celebrate Ian Trott’s 10th Season as Head Coach of our Premier Grade and Jocelyn Goodger’s 20th Season as our Premier Grade Scorer RSVP/Tickets - $80 pp, to [email protected] or phone Manager Steve Hurdley, 520 5933 Dress: Men – Jacket and Tie Payment can be made by direct credit to Parnell CC’s ASB a/c 123030 0637452 00 & please record Dinner & your name ######## Early Season Programme Premier Grade (Saturdays except for : Sunday play Highlighted, Wednesday T20s in red) 15 October vs Waitakere Te Atatu Domain 1a. KUMEU 86 Henry Glogau 4/20 (9) PARNELL 125/2 (25) Matt Vercoe-Curtis 21 rtd, Blue Hamell 28 rtd, Simon Wood 15 rtd, James Mulvey 15*, Henry Glogau 15* RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 8 WICKETS CAPTAIN TOM LANDRIGAN REPORTING: Lost the toss and we were put in the field. Kumeu collapsed being all out for 86. Standout performer was clearly Henry Glogau, a leg spinner who has come to us from the Karori CC, who had the outstanding figures of 9 overs, 3 maidens, 4 wickets for 20 runs. Henry also secured a run out. The remaining wickets were shared between the other bowlers apart from a second run out by Razin. Due to the low score posted by Kumeu, I decided to retire most of our batsmen in order to give them all time in the middle. It was decided once we passed Kumeu's score that we would continue until the 25 over mark. However the team was impressive in all facets of the game - even though the batters didn't have the opportunity they would have wanted. Very sadly, Razin’s Dad has died and Razin, last Monday evening, returned to India to be with his folks. Our sympathy and condolences go to Razin and his family. Henry Glogau, ex Karori CC - leggies, 9 overs 3 maidens, 20 runs 4 wickets! Blue Hamel and Elliot Jaffe with the ball – and Umpires Glynn Hammond & Jayath Batawangala NOTE – UMPIRES! Having deemed the the Premier game on 1a. could not start until 1.30pm, due to the likelihood of damage being done to the grass block beside it, the Umpires with nothing else to do, went over to the practice game on 2a. This Reserves’ practice game, with no grass block, got underway right on time at 11. Umpires Glynn Hammond and Jayath Batuwangala offered their services which were accepted with alacrity. Great that Jayath and Glynn made themselves available – a perfect example of the Spirit of Cricket in action! Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.

From Ithe day I joined the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s elite panel in 2008, two years after I stood in my first international at the Oval, I trained for every game, and in particular Test matches, in pretty much the same way and certainly with a bit more professionalism than when I played for England back in the 1980s when warm-ups usually consisted of a few laps of the outfield and some stretches with the physio Bernard Thomas, who was the equivalent of a modern-day strength and conditioning coach back then. Two days before the game started, I would go down to the ground, dump my gear in the umpires’ 17 GUNNER: MY LIFE IN CRICKET room, wander over to the nets and stand at one end during each team’s practice and just observe. When you think about it, it’s an obvious thing to do. The international game moves so quickly these days that when I began a new series in a different country there were invariably bowlers and batsmen who I had not come across before.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.112 : 26 Nov. Winning Cricket & Sun! Heroes of the Weekend: Callum Douglas – 118* Lalit Bose – 219 off 113 balls Karun Phorgat – 6 for 43 1 & 2: Callum Douglas and Lalit Bose – for our Thirds vs. Grafton United, Callum scored 118* on his Parnell Senior debut and Lalit hit a colossal 219 off only 113 balls.Their 2nd wicket partnership of 292 falls just short of the Parnell Lower Grade Record for that wicket – 297 set by R Bracefield and J Wallace in 2013/14. Callum comes to us from the King’s College 1st XI, for whom he scored a ton last month, and he has previously represented Parnell in EDCA Age Group teams and Auckland Under 17s. Lalit arrived a fortnight ago from UK having recently graduated from Durham University. He represented the University in a 1st Class match, vs. Warwickshire, in 2015 but his real claim to fame is that in 2012 he hit a century for his school, Harrow, at Lord’s vs. Eton. 2: Karun Phorgat – the smile says it all, a 6 for for the Reserves. Karun, “Special K” to the Reserves for whom he is the spearhead, is originally from India but has played Premier Grade cricket in Melbourne. This is his first season with Parnell and is making his mark with his enthusiasm and, particularly, his quick bowling. He is the Reserves leading wicket taker with figures of 4/37, 4/50, 4/31 and 1/58 before getting this first 5 for! Men’s Premier Grade: Hedley Howarth Trophy – Major 2 Day Championship Round 4.

  • Australia V England
AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND DECEMBER 28, 2019 BOXING DAY TEST FACT SHEET - DAY 3 Australia and New Zealand have only met in Tests at the MCG on three previous occasions. The MCC library fact sheets for each of the first three days of this match will highlight one of those contests. Today's sheet reviews the Third Test of the 1987/88 series. ‘The 1987/88 New Zealand tour’ The New Zealanders embarked on the two-month tour in mid-November less than three weeks after returning from the World Cup in India, faced with a challenging itinerary of 19 matches, including three Tests, three first-class matches and 10 one-day internationals. The touring party, however, was an internationally-hardened and settled combination, despite the absence of the recently-retired Jeremy Coney and Bruce Edgar. The party comprised 12 of the World Cup squad, bolstered by the inclusion of star pace bowler Richard Hadlee, who had been unavailable for the World Cup, and left- arm spinner Evan Gray as a like-for-like replacement for Stephen Boock. ‘Third Test Match, December 26-30, 1987’ New Zealand entered the match needing a win to square the series, having lost at Brisbane by nine wickets and drawn at Adelaide. Both sides made two changes to their line-ups from Adelaide, the visitors substituting Ewen Chatfield and Philip Horne for Evan Gray and Martin Snedden, while Australia were unable to consider injured pacemen Bruce Reid and Merv Hughes, replacing them with Test debutant Tony Dodemaide and Mike Whitney, whose only two Test appearances had been in England six years earlier.
