Parnell Club Incorporated - Established 1858

Update No.135 - 2 to 6 Dec. Summer at Last!

On the Big Stage – Parnell Players in the Limelight:

Lockie Mark Ben 1. somewhat surprisingly, Lockie was not chosen for the 1st Test. Your Editor had a hunch that he could have been in for Southee and Henry in for de Grandhomme (on the basis that Henry was just about as likely as de Grandhomme, given recent form, to score 20 – well “Dutchy” proved your Editor wrong and congratulations to Blundell, too – on Test debut was a superb effort!). Man of the Match was deservedly Neil Wagner but ’s 93 shouldn’t be forgotten – he did the “hard yards” along with Nicholls. And last, but not least, Boult at 11 keeping his end intact for so long. And Raval, just sticking there early on in the innings ………….. great team effort to win! 2nd Test – will Lockie be called up? Your Editor hopes so - will add another dimension to the NZ attack.

2. FORD TROPHY – LIMITED OVERS (50/50) – Aces vs. C.D. Stags - 5 win with 9 overs in hand vs. Canterbury - 7 wicket win with 7.3 2/27 off 5.5 overs then 24 off 37 balls 0/33 (3), 1 catch on boundary & 55* (59) BEN HORNE 1 catch ‘keeping and 23* off 21 balls 1 sharp catch off Nethula LOCKIE FERGUSON - 10o 2m 30r 1w – tight & threatening From Wednesday’s game, Auckland vs Canterbury – stole the show – 174* (118) & shared in 139* partnership with Chappie.

Junior Field Day - Parnell vs Auckland University Sun. 3 Dec

JUNIOR CHAIRMAN< JEREMY BOUCHER REPORTS: Over the weekend participated in our annual rep contest vs University (AUCC) playing for the and the Auckland Aces bats. The Stephen Fleming Bat is awards to the Club who wins the most A Rep fixtures and the Auckland Aces Bat is awarded to the B Rep victor. The games were played in sparkling sunshine and some of the best weather that we’ve seen in Auckland in recent weeks across grounds ranging from Colin Maiden Park to Glover Park. We fielded 2 sides from Years 3 all the way through to 7 a total of 10 sides playing cricket on the day. The results on the day were what one might call a mixed bag. I’ve included a little bit of commentary from the games that were posted onto Criq HQ as of Tuesday night. If scorers / coaches / managers can make sure the games are uploaded then I can include some sort of commentary for all teams. Year 7 saw good wins for both Parnell teams with University first in both games and Parnell knocking the runs off easily. o In 7a the bowling performance was strong with Denny, Meyer and James bowling a combined 14 overs for 26 runs! The University opener got away with a retired 50 but contributions thereafter weren’t significant. Our batters then proceeded to knock those runs off with about 13 overs to spare with Kharel (32), Khushal (29*) and Denny (46*) all contributing strongly. o In 7b, none of the University batters got to a retirement hampered by strong bowing from Woodfield (5 overs 3 for 15 runs) and Barker (5 overs 2 for 10). Our batters then knocked those runs off with over 8 overs to spare with Fulton (35), Dew (42) scoring well. - Year 6 saw two incredibly tight games both go the way of University. o In 6a University posted their 159 for 7 with only one batsman retiring but plenty of contributions in particular from their tail which wagged painfully. Our batters then fell 8 runs short from the full 30 overs in a tense run chase. The University team were pretty happy with this result as apparently last year we won this fixture on the last ball of the game!!! o In 6b Parnell batted first and posted 143 for 8 with Willby (34*) and Nathan (35*) both contributing strongly. 2nd we never really managed to get our bowling into a threatening space with just the two coming from the ball and 4 other wickets coming from run outs. University knocked off the total with 2 overs to spare. - Year 5 saw both games go down to the wire but go to Parnell. o 5a saw a strong bowling and fielding performance from Parnell restrict the University side to 112. Parnell should have knocked these off comfortably but the combination of ‘out you are out’ cricket and the first hard ball rep game got the better of most of our middle order who will have learned plenty from their day out. The Parnell innings was anchored by Nelson (30*) who guided the team home with 6 overs to spare but with no wickets in hand! Bashford was also notable with his blowing performance of 3 overs 2 for 6. o 5b saw another tight game result in a raucous win for Parnell. The celebrations on Glover Park at the end of their game were exciting to say the least. University scored their 152 for 9 off their full 30 overs with Parnell knocking that total off with only a few balls to spare and only 1 wicket in the bag. o Year 4 both our teams were given a strong contest by University with the scoreboards reflecting their supremacy with all facets of the game. The winning margins are wide and reflect how good the University teams were on the day. Our teams will have learned plenty from the outings, many of whom have little rep experience. With luck and good practice we’ll be stronger for the experience. In Year 3 we lost the A Rep fixture but won the B Rep fixture. Margins of victory were similar for both sides. We’ve not put a lot of work into selection at this young age group so we’ll see how we go vs Grafton this weekend! For these players it is definitely their first taste of Rep Cricket – much to learn. The scoreboard looked like this at the end of play.

Both bats had been in the Parnell trophy cabinet for a number of years so it was both painful to handover the A Rep bat and pleasurable to retain the Auckland Aces Bat. We will come out fighting for both bats again when we turn out in 2018! Some photos below of the winning 7A rep side after their game.

Our 7A Rep Brendan Meyer posing with his counterpart from University after the presentation. Both boys spoke eloquently and were a credit to their clubs.

If you have photos from your rep games from this weekend, please share them with either , Bryan Haggitt or myself so they can be included in the weekly update. Special thanks go to Megan Jaffe Ray White in Remuera who as you will have seen from Phil’s notes have come on board as a new sponsor at PCC. With their help we’ve managed to minimize the cost of kitting our Rep players out in some great kit. We are grateful for their support and remind our membership of the bonus payable to PCC for all homes sold through their organization. As Bryan says, please support our sponsors so it is easier for them to support us. Welcome feedback

Men’s Premier Grade Hedley Howarth Trophy - Two Day Championship, Round 5. Day 1

2 & 9 Dec. 2017 . PARNELL vs. GRAFTON UNITED at Shore Road Reserve 1.

James Russell Trophy

PARNELL 339/10 Brad Rodden 134, Andy Lane 47, James Bevin 43, M Snedden 3/31, J Parsons 4/70 GRAFTON UNITED 29/1 To be continued next Saturday, 9 Dec. at 11 am.

Two shots of Andy Lane – coming in at 3. He saw off the new ball Skipper Dave Goddard won the toss and chose to bat on a fresh pitch. GU bowlers bowled with spirit and made the most of the early life in the track. Wickets fell – 55/3 after 20 overs - and Andy was joined by Brad Rodden.

And Andy and Brad battled through to lunch – note an air of relief on their faces as they come in for the break!

Andy was dismissed for 47 but Brad continued with a succession of marvellous shots - see his cover drives above

After Andy, it was James Bevin (1 & 2 above) who then helped Brad carry on with more and more confidence

Brad’s 100 - congrats from James And from the boundary

Water needed? Thanks Jacob But Jacob, this is cricket, not baseball

The lower order hit out – a 6 to DvD Josh forcing one to cover

O Our Tail played some impressive shots, too - Rav hits a crashing 4 and Elliot thumps one past point before the innings ended at 339

Then onto the Field and on attack. Rav bowled with fire as did Dean

But Grafton’s opener held out – that is until Josh came on and, in the final over of the day, got one through the batsman’s defence. Body language says it all – jubilation from the bowler and fielders, mortification from the batsman. Postscript - Josh, you would have passed the DRS test but only just!!

CONTINUING ON SATURDAY, THE JAMES RUSSELL TROPHY AT STAKE – SHOULD BE A GREAT DAY’S CRICKET

2 & 9 Dec. PARNELL vs. NORTH SHORE Devonport Domain 1. NORTH SHORE 195/10 Razin Bharde 5/41 (20), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 3/42 (16)

PARNELL 75/4 Simon Wood 42 To be continued next Saturday, 9 Dec. at 11 am.

Photographer Craig wasn’t around so 2 photos from his archive: Raz tweaking (his 1st 5 for…!!!) and Simon in classic style

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING ON DAY 2.: A quick update: We lost the toss and North Shore elected to bat scoring 195 all out Wicket takers: Razin Bharde getting 5 for 41 off a long spell of 20 overs and Ganesh Ratnas taking 3 for 42 off 16 overs.

Batting for the last 1.5 hours of the day we got to 75 for 4. Losing Simon Wood (for a very well played 42) off the last ball off the day to an excellent catch at backward point. Contributions of 15 from Will Ormistan and Tom Talbot respectively, Tom and Simon put on an excellent partnership of 47 runs both unfortunately getting out in the last 3 overs 0of the day.

Women’s Premier Reserve Grade – Limited Overs

2 December PARNELL vs. TAKAPUNA Orakei Domain 1. PARNELL 123/8 (25.3) Emma Irwin 20, Isobel Mills 29, L Stydom 5/31 (5) TAKAPUNA 124/4 (22.5) L Strydom 34 RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 6 WICKETS MANAGER TOM BASSETT REPORTING: Second round of the Limited Overs comp saw Parnell Premier Reserve Women host Takapuna at Orakei. Takapuna won the toss, and asked Parnell to bat. Parnell started steadily getting to 112 for 3 after 20 overs. However, Takapuna kept the pressure up and Parnell lost its last five wickets in just over five overs adding only 11 runs. Some dubious umpiring calls caused some consternation inside and beyond the boundary. Crucially the team did not bat out the full 35 overs: and thus had a small target to defend. Main contributors were Emma Irwin at the top of the innings (20), Lexy Bassett (17) and Izzie Mills who top scored with 29. With a strong on-shore breeze, Parnell bowlers had trouble keeping a good line, and gave a lot of wides to Takapuna in its chase. Eventually Takapuna reached 124 in the 23rd over to win the match, only four wickets down. Pick of the bowlers was Izzie who backed up her top score batting with three late wickets. So a setback for Parnell Prem Reserve Women after the previous week at Kumeu. Lessons to be learned about batting out the allotted overs, and adjusting bowling to suit conditions. Thanks to Glenn Beuvink and Jonathan McInroy for umpiring duties. And thanks again to Dave for the well-prepared grass track. This week we host Howick Pakuranga at Melville.

Men’s 4TH Grade 2 Day Championship – Parnell “Thirds” 2 & 9 Dec. – PARNELL THIRDS vs. PAPATOETOE Colin Maiden Park PAPATOETOE 246/7 dec. (60)

PARNELL 117/1 (20) Luke O’Toole 50* RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st innings points to Parnell

Luke – continuing good form CAPTAIN/COACH RUDI BISSCHOFF REPORTING: Thirds played against Papatoetoe. The wicket was a good one, thanks Dave. We lost the Toss and Papatoetoe decided to bat. We would have bowled first had we won as the wicket looked like it had a bit in it. Bowlers bowled well, but drop catches ( 5 or 6) didn't help. Hamish picked up 3 wickets and the other bowlers spread the rest between them. Papatoetoe made 246/7 off 60 overs. Our openers started will and Rowan made 18 before getting out. Luke O'Toole & Jack Coman are still in with O'Toole having made his 50*. PCC were on 117/1 off 23 overs at close of play on Day 1. We need another 130 off 37 overs with 9 wickets in hand. So well set for a 1st innings win, should batsmen get partnerships going and look for their tons.

Men’s Senior 7th Grade 2 Day Championship Parnell “Fourths”

2 December PARNELL FOURTHS vs EDEN ROSKILL at Keith Hay Park 3a.

PARNELL 239/ 9 dec. (60) Pillarisetti 88, Josh Milne 25, Wes van Wyk, 37. EDEN ROSKILL 31/2 (20) To be continued next Saturday, 9 Dec. at 11 am. CAPTAIN JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING: After finding ourselves down four men on Thursday night, Ashwin came to the Fourth’s rescue finding three others and himself to play for us. We lost the toss and were sent into bat and were in early trouble 3 for 39. But a fight back by Van Wyk & Pillarisetti saw us through to the 48 over when we were 162 and Van Wyk was out for 37. Wickets fell on continued basis but runs become easier to get as they brought on their 10th bowler - yes their wicketkeeper / captain who decided he’d have a bowl as well. We finished our innings 9 down for 239 which we thought was respectable. We started well taking two wickets before the end of the day and only allowing them to score 31 run off the first 20 over, with the last 6 overs of the day being maidens. So we head into the second day’s play with a further 208 run for them to get off 40 overs to defend but only 8 wickets in hand, we aim to roll these guys early and take full control of this game.

Men’s One Day Grades

Grade 1B Parnell “Kings” 2 December – PARNELL KINGS vs TAKAPUNA at Onepoto Domain TAKAPUNA 217/10 (38.5) Arul 4/39, Aaron 2/28, Sowndar 2/40 PARNELL 218/8 (37.5) Chak 43, Ajit 37 RESULT: PARNELL KINGS WON BY 2 WICKETS

CHAK ARUNACHALAM REPORTING FOR SKIPPER SOWNDAR We played against Takapuna at Onepoto domain on Saturday. Having lost the toss we were asked to bowl first on a nice sunny day. Aaron and Arul opened the bowling, though they were disciplined in their line and length, wickets were hard to come and the batsman played well scoring quick runs. Arul got the first breakthrough with the batsman nicking one to the keeper. Sowndar and Abrar then replaced the opening bowlers, but the scoring didn't stop, Sowndar with his in swingers knocked the stumps over to get the 2nd wicket for the team. But the batsman at the other end kept scoring, a few dropped catches aiding him. Also we lost Sundar to a freak injury as he broke his thumb trying to stop the ball which was hit fiercly at short cover. After the drinks break though Abrar got the wicket of the well set batsman courtesy of a brilliant catch by Sowndar. A couple of good catches from Vignesh and Aaron got the team back in the game. Then came Arul who bowled brilliantly at the death and got 3 quick wickets troubling the batsman with his pace. Aaron then finished off the tail as we dismissed Takapuna for 217 in 38overs. On reply Abrar and Chak opened the batting for Parnell and were treated with some nasty , Abrar lost his cool and his wicket as well. But Roy and Chak kept things steady scoring at a good pace without losing cool. They both batted brilliantly and had a good partnership going on, rotating the strike well and scoring boundaries off bad deliveries. Just before the drinks break both of them got dismissed putting the team in a spot of bother, but Ajit eased the nerves playing some wonderful shots and had good partnership with Arul and Sowndar to get the team close to victory. Ajit got out with just a run to score and in the end we won with 13 balls to spare.

Presidents’ Grade 2 December– PARNELL PRESSIES vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN WARRIORS at Avondale Racecourse 5a. SUBURBS NL 230/9 (35) Neil McCullough 3/43 (7), Chris Laycock 2/30 (70) PARNELL 199/4 (35) Phil Lindburgh 83 (51), John Nichol 72* (66) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 31 RUNS MARK SMITH BACK REPORTING: The toss was lost and we were put in to field. Robbo continued his luckless season being dropped at (Lee) on his first ball. An exact repeat of last weeks opening ball. The opening batsmen rode their luck with big hitting, but tight bowling from Robbo and O'Gormon (both 1/33, 7 overs) slowed them down and once dismissed the run rate dropped markedly. MacCulloch 3/43 (7 overs), Laycock showed his all round skills 2/30 (7 overs) and Lee found his hands with 4 catches (plus 1 more drop). A good overall effort against the leading team in the competition. Openers, Rod Smith and Lee, faced some tight accurate bowling, surviving at the expense of the runrate. After 15 overs, Parnell was on 35, while SLCC were on 92 at the same stage. Enter Lindberg, still smarting from a first ball duck in his previous match, with support from Nicol. Their combined heroics were not enough to overcome the huge deficit, Lindberg 83 off 51 balls (SR 163), Nicol 72 NO off 66 balls. Tragedy turned to farce as 9 of the SL field dropped to the boundary, leaving only the bowler and the keeper in close. The 30m circle was and is a great addition to cricket. A pity it is not universally applied. Looking forward to the return match.

James Russell Trophy Luncheon 9 December in the Mike Simpson Lounge -11.30am for Noon

During Men’s Premier Grade Parnell vs. Grafton United A reunion - Parnell and Grafton United are the two oldest cricket clubs in and competing again in Men’s Premier Grade. Back in 1861, the Otago Goldrush and the Maori War had caused an Exodus from Auckland. The existing clubs – Auckland, Parnell and West End called a Meeting and formed the United CC – now Grafton United.

James Russell, then Secretary of Parnell, and a main instigator, became Secretary of the new club so, today, our Clubs are competing for the James Russell Trophy.

All Welcome – particularly stalwarts of Parnell and Grafton United $20 per head - Wives/Partners welcome RSVP, for catering - to Bryan Haggitt [email protected] James Russell

James Russell – 1840-1905

James Russell was a remarkable man. A 19 year old, he opened the batting for Parnell CC in it’s first game on 17 March 1858 and continue to do so till 1861. One of 6 Parnell players who travelled (by steamer) to in 1860 to play the very first interprovincial game. Russell took 10 wickets in the match enabling Auckland to win by 4 wickets. By 1861 his fellow Parnell opener, John Kissling, had joined the new Bank of NZ and left for Otago where he set up 6 branches and agencies in just 6 months. Russell, as Parnell’s Secretary met with Auckland CC’s John Varty and the United CC was formed. No formal competition in those days – just games against visiting ship crews and the Military. Russell continued to play cricket well into the 1870s but took a great and active interest in all sport and social matters. An inaugural member of the Auckland Racing Club, The Northern Club, the Auckland Golf Club and the Remuera Bowling Club becoming President of most of these institutions including Auckland Cricket Association for the decade 1892-1902. A lawyer by profession, like his 3 brothers, he joined Samuel Jackson in partnership and that firm, Jackson Russell, continues today. In 1902 he retired to England and died 3 years later but not before his 2 daughters had married into the English aristocracy. It is fitting that Parnell and Grafton United now compete for the James Russell Trophy.
