Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.135 - 2 to 6 Dec. Summer at Last! On the Big Stage – Parnell Players in the Limelight: Lockie Mark Ben 1. LOCKIE FERGUSON somewhat surprisingly, Lockie was not chosen for the 1st Test. Your Editor had a hunch that he could have been in for Southee and Henry in for de Grandhomme (on the basis that Henry was just about as likely as de Grandhomme, given recent form, to score 20 – well “Dutchy” proved your Editor wrong and congratulations to Blundell, too – century on Test debut was a superb effort!). Man of the Match was deservedly Neil Wagner but Ross Taylor’s 93 shouldn’t be forgotten – he did the “hard yards” along with Nicholls. And last, but not least, Boult at 11 keeping his end intact for so long. And Raval, just sticking there early on in the innings ………….. great team effort to win! 2nd Test – will Lockie be called up? Your Editor hopes so - will add another dimension to the NZ attack. 2. FORD TROPHY – LIMITED OVERS (50/50) – Auckland Aces vs. C.D. Stags - 5 wicket win with 9 overs in hand vs. Canterbury - 7 wicket win with 7.3 MARK CHAPMAN 2/27 off 5.5 overs then 24 off 37 balls 0/33 (3), 1 catch on boundary & 55* (59) BEN HORNE 1 catch ‘keeping and 23* off 21 balls 1 sharp catch off Nethula LOCKIE FERGUSON - 10o 2m 30r 1w – tight & threatening From Wednesday’s game, Auckland vs Canterbury – Colin Munro stole the show – 174* (118) & shared in 139* partnership with Chappie. Lockie at full steam McClenaghan from the other end - a top attack Chappie bowling Ben behind the stumps – Stokes bowling – 0/39 (7) after scoring 34 Junior Field Day - Parnell vs Auckland University Sun. 3 Dec JUNIOR CHAIRMAN< JEREMY BOUCHER REPORTS: Over the weekend participated in our annual rep contest vs University (AUCC) playing for the Stephen Fleming and the Auckland Aces bats. The Stephen Fleming Bat is awards to the Club who wins the most A Rep fixtures and the Auckland Aces Bat is awarded to the B Rep victor. The games were played in sparkling sunshine and some of the best weather that we’ve seen in Auckland in recent weeks across grounds ranging from Colin Maiden Park to Glover Park. We fielded 2 sides from Years 3 all the way through to 7 a total of 10 sides playing cricket on the day. The results on the day were what one might call a mixed bag. I’ve included a little bit of commentary from the games that were posted onto Criq HQ as of Tuesday night. If scorers / coaches / managers can make sure the games are uploaded then I can include some sort of commentary for all teams. Year 7 saw good wins for both Parnell teams with University batting first in both games and Parnell knocking the runs off easily. o In 7a the bowling performance was strong with Denny, Meyer and James bowling a combined 14 overs for 26 runs! The University opener got away with a retired 50 but contributions thereafter weren’t significant. Our batters then proceeded to knock those runs off with about 13 overs to spare with Kharel (32), Khushal (29*) and Denny (46*) all contributing strongly. o In 7b, none of the University batters got to a retirement hampered by strong bowing from Woodfield (5 overs 3 for 15 runs) and Barker (5 overs 2 for 10). Our batters then knocked those runs off with over 8 overs to spare with Fulton (35), Dew (42) scoring well. - Year 6 saw two incredibly tight games both go the way of University. o In 6a University posted their 159 for 7 with only one batsman retiring but plenty of contributions in particular from their tail which wagged painfully. Our batters then fell 8 runs short from the full 30 overs in a tense run chase. The University team were pretty happy with this result as apparently last year we won this fixture on the last ball of the game!!! o In 6b Parnell batted first and posted 143 for 8 with Willby (34*) and Nathan (35*) both contributing strongly. Fielding 2nd we never really managed to get our bowling into a threatening space with just the two wickets coming from the ball and 4 other wickets coming from run outs. University knocked off the total with 2 overs to spare. - Year 5 saw both games go down to the wire but go to Parnell. o 5a saw a strong bowling and fielding performance from Parnell restrict the University side to 112. Parnell should have knocked these off comfortably but the combination of ‘out you are out’ cricket and the first hard ball rep game got the better of most of our middle order who will have learned plenty from their day out. The Parnell innings was anchored by Nelson (30*) who guided the team home with 6 overs to spare but with no wickets in hand! Bashford was also notable with his blowing performance of 3 overs 2 for 6. o 5b saw another tight game result in a raucous win for Parnell. The celebrations on Glover Park at the end of their game were exciting to say the least. University scored their 152 for 9 off their full 30 overs with Parnell knocking that total off with only a few balls to spare and only 1 wicket in the bag. o Year 4 both our teams were given a strong contest by University with the scoreboards reflecting their supremacy with all facets of the game. The winning margins are wide and reflect how good the University teams were on the day. Our teams will have learned plenty from the outings, many of whom have little rep experience. With luck and good practice we’ll be stronger for the experience. In Year 3 we lost the A Rep fixture but won the B Rep fixture. Margins of victory were similar for both sides. We’ve not put a lot of work into selection at this young age group so we’ll see how we go vs Grafton this weekend! For these players it is definitely their first taste of Rep Cricket – much to learn. The scoreboard looked like this at the end of play. Both bats had been in the Parnell trophy cabinet for a number of years so it was both painful to handover the A Rep bat and pleasurable to retain the Auckland Aces Bat. We will come out fighting for both bats again when we turn out in 2018! Some photos below of the winning 7A rep side after their game. Our 7A Rep Captain Brendan Meyer posing with his counterpart from University after the presentation. Both boys spoke eloquently and were a credit to their clubs. If you have photos from your rep games from this weekend, please share them with either Phil Horne, Bryan Haggitt or myself so they can be included in the weekly update. Special thanks go to Megan Jaffe Ray White in Remuera who as you will have seen from Phil’s notes have come on board as a new sponsor at PCC. With their help we’ve managed to minimize the cost of kitting our Rep players out in some great kit. We are grateful for their support and remind our membership of the bonus payable to PCC for all homes sold through their organization. As Bryan says, please support our sponsors so it is easier for them to support us. Welcome feedback Jeremy Boucher - Juniors’ Chairman Men’s Premier Grade Hedley Howarth Trophy - Two Day Championship, Round 5. Day 1 2 & 9 Dec. 2017 . PARNELL vs. GRAFTON UNITED at Shore Road Reserve 1. James Russell Trophy PARNELL 339/10 Brad Rodden 134, Andy Lane 47, James Bevin 43, M Snedden 3/31, J Parsons 4/70 GRAFTON UNITED 29/1 To be continued next Saturday, 9 Dec. at 11 am. Two shots of Andy Lane – coming in at 3. He saw off the new ball Skipper Dave Goddard won the toss and chose to bat on a fresh pitch. GU bowlers bowled with spirit and made the most of the early life in the track. Wickets fell – 55/3 after 20 overs - and Andy was joined by Brad Rodden. And Andy and Brad battled through to lunch – note an air of relief on their faces as they come in for the break! Andy was dismissed for 47 but Brad continued with a succession of marvellous shots - see his cover drives above After Andy, it was James Bevin (1 & 2 above) who then helped Brad carry on with more and more confidence Brad’s 100 - congrats from James And from the boundary Water needed? Thanks Jacob But Jacob, this is cricket, not baseball The lower order hit out – a 6 to DvD Josh forcing one to cover O Our Tail played some impressive shots, too - Rav hits a crashing 4 and Elliot thumps one past point before the innings ended at 339 Then onto the Field and on attack. Rav bowled with fire as did Dean But Grafton’s opener held out – that is until Josh came on and, in the final over of the day, got one through the batsman’s defence. Body language says it all – jubilation from the bowler and fielders, mortification from the batsman. Postscript - Josh, you would have passed the DRS test but only just!! CONTINUING ON SATURDAY, THE JAMES RUSSELL TROPHY AT STAKE – SHOULD BE A GREAT DAY’S CRICKET Men’s Premier Grade Points at End of Round 4.
