Men’s Premier Grade T20 Championship

Our Prems at Colin Maiden Park last Saturday, 21 December – victorious in their two T20s that day and unbeaten in all 11 games so far this season. Here enjoying Chairman Craig Presland’s shout! A notable day – Parnell, in Round 3 in the morning, fielded 3 Black Caps plus another 4 who had played 1st Class cricket. Then, when 5 of the “All Stars” had departed to join the Aces, the remainder defeated Ellerslie by no fewer than 91 runs.

T20 CHAMPIONSHIP: Round 1. as previously reported, Parnell 143/8 beat Cornwall 95/10 by 48 runs on 11 December:

Round 2. Thursday, 19 Dec.. PARNELL vs EDEN ROSKILL at Shore Road 1

EDEN ROSKILL 122/9 (20) V Puppala 27 (21), JK Kumar 27 (25), Josh Fisher 1/15 (3), Ollie Pringle 3/24 (4) Fanie de Villiers 1/31 (4), Keegan Russell 0/17 (3), Nikith Perera 0/17 (2), Aniket Parikh 2/15 (4) PARNELL 125/2 (17.1) Andy Lane 52* (47), Ben Horne 63* (50) RESULT: Parnell won by 8

Andy and Ben – unbroken parnership of 119 took us to victory

Round 3. Saturday, 21 December, 11am PARNELL vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY at Colin Maiden Park B (no. 1). PARNELL 130/10 (20) Corey Anderson 60 (51), Brad Rodden 23 (15), Andy Lane 13 (13), B Hawkes 3/22 (4), N Stobart 3/33 (4) AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 98/10 (20) G Clark 34 (35), C Ansell 23 (27), Josh Fisher 0/22 (4), Ollie Pringle 3/12 (3), Will Somerville 4/16 (4), Fanie de Villiers 1/12 (3), Aniket Parikh 0/19 (4), Mark Chapman 2/12 (2) RESULT: Parnell won by 32 runs

Three Black Caps - Corey Anderson, who has just joined us, Will Somerville and Mark Chapman along with Ian Trott, our former coach

And our 1st Class contingent – Ben Rae (Canterbury) with Auckland Aces Ben Horne and Aniket Parikh plus Skipper Brad Rodden (Otago)

For once our Aces (except for Lockie) were with us but we still started disasterously with Ben Rae, Mark Chapman and Ben Horne were back in the hutch with only 17 on the board. Never fear – Corey Anderson and Skipper Brad came to the rescue adding 51. Then Andy L. ane joined Corey and they took the total to 118. At this stage 150 seemed on the cards but Andy and the Corey were dismissed with no addition – 118/4 becoming 118/6 and, worse, our remaining 4 wickets tumbled for just another 12. Onlookers left more than a trifle nervous! At the break, comments were made that “our bowlers will need to do well!” And they did – aided by some exceptional catching. First, ‘keeper Ben Horne snaffled a snorter from Dench off Ollie – 1/8 and then, at 21 and 27, took two more behind the stumps to dismiss Anand and Vodnala. University’s Durham CCC pro, Graham Clark, settled in and was joined by Connor Ansell (who impressed more that the pro). Score started to mount, Will Somerville came on – 4 singles off his first over. Then in Will’s second, with the total at 65, Ansell carted the ball towards mid and

Josh Fisher rushed in from the boundary and dived headlongto take an outstanding catch. University’s spell was broken – one run later Low being caught by Ollie at deep, forward square leg off Will. Ollie came back to have Stobart caught behind – Ben’s 4th catch, Will dismissed Clark for his 4th wicket and Chappie then tidied up the last of the tail. As said – “catches win matches!” One final note – welcome to Cory Anderson who, in just his second knock for the Club, hit 60 most timely runs. Corey, we very much look forward to you scoring heaps more for Parnell, the Aces and, hopefully, for the Black Caps, too!

Round 4. Saturday, 21 December, 3pm PARNELL vs ELLERSLIE at Colin Maiden Park A (no. 2). PARNELL 168/6 (20) Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 91 (57, Andy Lane 15 (17), Brad Rodden 29 (21), ELLERSLIE 77/10 (17) D Patel 26 (28), S Venville 21 (26), Josh Fisher 4/19 (4), Ollie Pringle 1/8 (3), Keegan Russell 1/18 (3), Aniket Parikh 1/22 (4), Fanie de Villiers 1/7 (2), Ben Horne 1/3 (1) RESULT: Parnell won by 91 runs

Colin Maiden Park A (no. 2) - Skipper Brad leading Parnell from the field having defeated Ellerslie by 91 runs, 2nd win of the day. BUT NOTE THE CONDITION OF THE OUTFIELD _ CONTRACTOR HAD SANDED THE FIELD 2 DAYS BEFORE! ACCORDING TO AUCC, THE CONTRACTOR DID THIS WITHOUT CONSULTING THE GROUNDSTAFF – TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE PLAYERS FOR WHOM THE FIELDS ARE PROVIDED – SHAME, ONLY BLOT ON A GREAT DAY’S CRICKET

Flynn McGregor-Sumpter – his 91 was outstanding – his 3rd 90 this season (photo from Thursdays T20 vs Eden Roskill) The Aces’ contingent (apart from Ben Horne) departed, required for the Dream11 Super Smash at Seddon Park vs Northern Knights, and they were replaced by Flynn McGregor-Sumpter, Keegan Russell and Harry Miller. First a comment about Colin Maiden Park’s A Field – it was a disgrace. Despite two Men’s Premier Grade games being scheduled for this ground pre-season, the contractor, Ventia, saw fit to sand the ground last Thursday. The ground was just a sandpit – not fit for junior schoolboys yet alone two Premier Men’s Grade T20s. Photo below tells the story – we expect better from the ground contractor! Flynn celebrated his recall in sensational fashion – his 91, at a of 160 dominated our innings. Particularly strong on the drive, the Ellerslie bowlers had no answer to Flynn and Ben Rae, Andy and Brad played only minor supporting roles. In reply, the Ellerslie batsmen crumpled – Josh opened up with a fiery spell bowling their prolific scoring pro, Hassan Azad who opened, first ball. Note that 25 year old Azad has played 24 1st Class games for Leicestershire – 1659 runs at 50.27 and including 4 centuries. A major blow for Ellerslie – Ollie chimed in removing the other opener and Keegan, very smartly, threw down the wicket to run out first drop. Wickets fell rapidly- 0/1, 5/2, 10/3, 18/4, 18/5. Dipesh Patel put up some resistence – he pulled three 4s off Keegan’s first over - but the fightback was brief and the innings ended with Harry effecting a stumping off Ben Horne’s bowling

Last Saturday – Jeff Crowe Cup Round 4.

Round 4. 14 December PARNELL vs PAPATOETOE at Shore Road Reserve 1.

PAPATOETOE 184/10 (46.4) L Clark 38 (69), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 3/23 (6), Aniket Parikh 3/42 (10) PARNELL 185/6 (44.5) Ben Rae 77* (120), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 25 (31), Brad Rodden 41 (60) RESULT: Parnell won by 4 wickets

Keegan Russell taking his 4th catch in Papatoetoe’s innings and Ben Rae, a sparkling 77*

NOTE: OUR MEN’S PREMIER GRADE TEAM IS UNBEATEN THIS SEASON IN ALL THREE FORMATS: Hedley Howarth Trophy 3 x 1st innings wins (Takapuna leads Table: 53 to our 45 points having had an outright) Jeff Crowe Cup 4 wins (Parnell is defending Champion and leads the Pool 2. Table T20 Championship 4 wins in Pool 2. Overall winner goes on to represent Auckland in the National CCC in April. BUT THE SILVERWARE IS NOT YET IN THE CABINET – DON’T SLACKEN OFF!

Our Premier 5 Pronged Pace Attack Much of our success this season is due to our pace attack. The arrival of Fanie de Villiers, only 26 but a highly experienced cricketer having played in his native South Africa, India, England and, here in NZ in Marlborough and at Cornwall, has added immesurably to our attack. Already blessed with Ollie Pringle’s contribution and Ganesh is having a bumper season (5/9 vs Cornwall), Josh Fisher is producing some breathtaking spells just as others tire (his 4/14 vs Cornwall for instance!). And not to forget young Keegan Russell who shows great promise.

Two views of Ollie Pringle bowling – Ollie has taken 21 wickets at 13.95 each (plus scoring 230 runs @ 38.33)

Two shots of Fanie deVilliers – 26 wickets at 17.65

Three of Josh Fisher – 19 wickets at 21.37 – and on Sunday, vs Ellerslie with the very first ball of the innings, bowled their pro, Hassan Azad, Leicestershire CCC’s star bat – 1659 1st Class runs @ 50.27

And Ganesh – 11 wickets at 13.91 each and Keegan Russell – 8 wickets at only 15.76 And, in the New Year, there will be more oportunities for our spinners, Aniket (already 11 wickets at 22.82) and Nikith

‘KEEPERS: Harry Miller has 20 catches 2 stumpings, Ben Horne 13 catches and 1 stumping – outstanding work!

LEADING BATSMEN This Season: Ben Horne 329 runs 54.83 average Brad Rodden 428 53.50 Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 345 43.13 Ollie Pringle 230 38.33 Ben Rainger 242 30.25 Career Milestones: Ben Horne has now scored 4000 runs and Ben Rae 3000 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy has taken 141 wickets but scored only 122 runs!

Huge thanks to Jocelyn Goodger for the Premier statistics – her very full stats will, hopefully, be posted on Facebook.

Round 1. 21 December PARNELL vs GRAFTON UNITED at Keith Hay Park. GRAFTON UNITED 71/10 (13) Prasant Dhanjee 3/11 (3), Ed Bartlett 2/9 (3), Jack Parsons 2/15 (2) PARNELL 72/6 (44.5) Will Ormiston 18 (26), Razin Bharde 14* (19) RESULT: Parnell won by 2 wickets Pitch was difficult, uncovered and rain overnight meant a delayed start and reduced to 15 overs. Our bowlers showed their maturity and we were left to chase 72 to win. Only Will stuck around as wickets tumbled but Skipper Razin saw it through to a win off the last ball.

Round 2. 21 December PARNELL vs EDEN ROSKILL at Keith Hay Park. EDEN ROSKILL 120.8 (20) A Garud 49 (44), Sam James-Everton 2/23 (4o 1m), Jack Parsons 2/12 (3) PARNELL 116/6 (20) Giacomo Lamplough 48* (51), Quin Sorensen 30 (25) RESULT: Parnell lost by 4 runs Sad to lose by such a small margin especially with plenty of wickets in hand. Still, time to reflect and to achieve better in the New Year.

Round 8 PARNELL KINGS vs GRAFTON UNITED GOLD PARNELL KINGS 222/9 (40) Chak 41, Aaron 37 GRAFTON UNITED GOLD 223/6 (39) Sowndar 2/41, Karthik 1/29 RESULT: Parnell lost by 4 wickets CHAK ARUNACHALAM REPORTING: On a bright sunny day, Arul won the toss and chose to bat first. Chak and Mani opened the innings and were off to a good start. Chak started off with a massive six and couple of crispy cuts to upset the bowlers rhythm. Mani on the other end rotated strike with occasional boundary. Chak was unlucky to have adjourned lbw for a well made 41. Karthik and Mani steadied the innings until half way. Soon after the break, Mani got out and Kings were 101/2. Quick dismissals of Karthik, Roopesh and Pavan left Kings reeling at 120/5. Sai and Arul batted sensibly and kept the scoreboard ticking but boundaries were hard to come by. It was Aaron's destructive that took Kings over 200 and posted a respectable target of 223. Aaron hit 4 humongous sixes and was unbeaten on 37 off just 13 balls with a strike rate of 284.62. Opponent's intentions were quite clear from the ball one as they went after Aaron and Arul's bowling. Aaron got the first break through for kings when he had the batsmen nick one to Arul at slips. Pavan, Sowndar and Roopesh joined the party and took a wicket each. Opponents were reduced to 92/4 but put on a massive 100 run partnership for the fifth wicket to take the game away from kings, thanks to couple of drop catches. Shuffling the bowlers around didn't help much, as the sloppy work in the field continued for kings. In the end, opponents reached the target with an over to spare. Couple of catches, run outs and few half chances went begging. To win a game at this level, catching/fielding is as important as batting/bowling. Two weeks of break should give Kings an opportunity to work on their fielding skills and come back strong in the new year. National Boys’ Under 19 Tournament – Auckland Again the Winner

Auckland successfully defended it’s title in the National Tournament held early this month at Lincoln. Won by Auckland in 2018/19 under the captaincy of Parnell’s Harry Miller, Parnell was represented this season in the Auckland Team by Nikith Perera and Nathan Robinson and, in the Northern District Team, SS Dhambagolla.

Auckland Grammar School’s Development Tour to Sydney and Melbourne – December 2019

THE TEAM - PARNELL MEMBERS IN BOLD Back: Cameron Fletcher, K Lowe, Josh Irwin (Captain), M Raniga, B Tomlinson, M Stewart, O Hulme, Jack Wright, Mr IS Trott (Coach S Mathur, W Jones, J Stephan (Vice Captain), U Gutpa, J Todd, Robbie Jones, Will McLachlan, J Seabrook Not in photo: Tour Manager: - J Doolan, Director of Sports Development: - D Askew

COACH IAN TROTT REPORTING: Games were played against 3 schools in Sydney. & 2 in Melbourne.

1st. St Ignatious College batted 1st & set a total of 229 - we chased & ~ unfortunately 1 run short at the end. Josh Irwin excellent 115 - out in the last over, need 12 to win in this last over.

2nd Cranbrook, we batted 1st on a very new wicket ~(only laid in `May) reached 158 in 40 overs. Boys bowled well & got them out for 105.

3rd.Knox College, we batted 1st with Robbie Jones opening & got a good 40 with Josh Irwin making 44 well set. Reached 224, bowled well & fielding was exceptional, good catches & 4 run-outs. They only managed 202 in 50 overs, so a good win.

Travelled at "Sparrow's" to be at airport @ 2 a.m. & then travelled to Melbourne & played 2 x 20/20's in a day. In the 1st, we batted 1st with all the "juniors' having a game & Jack Wright got a a good 20 n.o. including the only 6 of our innings! Unfortunately we lost at the end of the 19th over. The afternoon game the opposition got 149 & Josh Irwin got a 5 wicket haul, for very few runs, & in the chase we were 8/2 after 4 overs & Josh Stephan 83 n.o & Josh Irwin 61 n.o. saw us home. What was so good about the chase - was the fact the boundaries were not the feature - the running between wickets was supreme & a real pleasure to watch. Such understanding & communication is to be admired at any level. Good end to a very long day!

2nd day fixture vs Scotch College 1st XI batted 1st & managed to reach 152 in 75 overs. A 5 session fixture was how the game was figured - 1 session short of normal playing time. They batted on & reached 280/8. We batted once more & in our 2nd innings we batted for 30 overs & it fizzled to a draw.

Scotch College - what a great school to be playing at/on. The Black Caps were scheduled to play at this venue before the Melbourne test. The quote of the tour - to sum the place up was by Josh Irwin "This is King's on Steroids !!"

The tour was a success in so many ways as the Team came to understand what it will take to play at a higher level & they also were billeted on some nights so became aware of another aspect of touring & were a credit to the school & country . Looking forward to getting the next one planned & organised. Many thanks to all those who helped & organised- the fund raising was of such importance to the whole, enabling some who might not have made the trip otherwise. Very grateful to all.

Last Word From Our Pressies – They Had a Win! PRESSIES A WIN - a Jubilant Skipper, Chris Laycock Reports: 14 December 2019 PARNELL vs EDEN ROSKILL vs Eden Roskill at Shore Rd 2a Our hunger for a win this week saw the hatching of a more pro active batting plan, but rather than putting that into action I lost another toss and we took the field. Robbo, with figures of 3-20-7 and Evan (0-22-7) kept ER to a modest 2/64 at drinks nicely backed up by Neil (2-27-5) Keith (1-26-3) and Gormo (2-23-5) in our most disciplined bowling session this season. Smithy (1-20-3) shared a bowling slot with our international import Lee (0-27-4) Other than Neil and I shelling a couple of tough catches, we held on to them, 7 of them, a couple of them pretty special, Smithy taking full advantage of his imposing stature and AJ celebrating his own awesomeness having conquered his boundary catching hex. Eden set us a fairly comfortable 164 having lost 9 wickets. AJ and I chalked up another 50+ opening stand and at drinks we were 1/59 a little short of where we had planned to be but quietly confident in our batting intent to follow the drinks break. With 80 needed from the last 10 overs I got stuck in and mustered up a solid 77 in a bit of a captains knock (if I must say so myself) Neil continued his fine form at the end of the innings scoring a tidy 23 off 18 balls. Greg who declined a bowl and took a more supportive role in the field (due to corporate season fatigue) assisted Neil in bringing our first win home with one ball up our sleeves. Happy Christmas friends and followers, more good cricket after Santa’s been.

Message from David Moir in Dunedin

Hi everyone After countless years watching innumerable cricket teams warm up with rugby and soccer balls, at last...... see above! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. David

[David Moir was the very successful captain of the Parnell Juniors from 1955/56 to 1958/59, he later served on the Parnell Committee, coached many teams and, as a school teacher, taught many with Parnell connections including Tony Burt at Hamilton Boys.
