RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st INNINGS WIN TO PARNELL

Parnell used it’s “get out of jail” card on Saturday. The first day was wet and damp and play got under way only with difficulty. Put into bat we failed dismally to end with just 97/8 – enough said about that!

DAY 2. Brilliantly fine, our overnight batsmen, Will St John (a 17 year old on debut) and Prasant Dhanjee put their heads down, played straight and between them added 20 invaluable runs for the 9th . Then came Rav – a bit bolder and, with Will, added a further 38 to our total before Will was caught in the slips. 58 runs for the last 2 – gold (and just a pity the Black Caps tail hadn’t batted as sensibly in Adelaide!).

Tom Talbot - on the 1st Day was looking good when he lost his wicket Will St John – played out time on Day 1. & went on to score 25 himself and help add 58 runs for the last 2 wickets!

Then Takapuna’s turn. Ganesh had Ter Braak caught by Mark Chapman (just back from great deeds in Dubai) at 11 and then had Harley caught behind at 37. Takapuna had reached 62/2 at lunch and were looking comfortable but,

after the break, Will St John turne their innings on it’s head by taking 4 wickets in the space of just 12 runs. Making good use of the stiff breeze to get movement, his medium pacers were deadly. Backed by Rav’s and Ganesh’s accurate and hostile attack from the other end, Will was the perfect foil. Prasant then nabbed a wicket, Rav came back and, with Ganesh, cleaned up the tail to give us a 1st innings lead of 18.

Tim and Sam Varcoe made a steady start to our second innings till Sam turned for a further run, was sent back and was run out. Jesse took over with a vengence hitting his 51* off only 34 balls and overtaking Tim who, as usual was rock solid. Takapuna seemed more than happy to call the game off at 6.00 pm.

An outstanding result for Parnell and huge credit to debutant Will St John for both his and . Will, a Parnell lad all his short career, has been appointed of the King’s College 1st XI for 2016 and, last season, represented Auckland U16s.

Sunday, 6 December 2015 CORNWALL vs. PARNELL Cornwall Park 1.

CORNWALL 141/9 (50) S Nair 40*, Mike Ravlic 10 2 18 3 Ganesh Ratnasabapaty 10 2 43 2 Tom Hills 10 3 21 2 Prasant Dhanjee 10 1 24 1 Mark Chapman 4 0 14 0 Tim McIntosh 5 0 12 0 Ben Horne 1 0 7 0 PARNELL 142/3 ? Jesse Simpson 94*, Mark Chapman 19

RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 7 WICKETS

Great, tight bowling backed by superb fielding, despite the state of the outfield, earned us a well deserved win

Our Premier team returned to Cornwall Park for their third game there this season and one has to ask why such scheduling particularly when the Cornwall outfield leaves a great deal to be desired and is far inferior to that of Orakei Domain. And what about the usual “home and away” concept? “Home Games” are cherished by players – for Cornwall to host all three games this season seems strange and a trifle unfair.

But the cricket itself - brilliantly fine, Cornwall won the toss and batted. They were soon in trouble, and always behind the clock, due to the pin point accuracy of Mike Ravlic and Ganesh. Wickets fell regularly as Rav kept up the pressure – he bowled his 10 overs straight for the superb return of 3/18. And Ganesh was almost as parsimonious and dangerous. Tom Hills, in his first game back from injury, came on as first change and there was no let up. Tom gained a lbw thanks to the batsman offering no shot and then skittled the newcomer.

Prasant came on and was even harder to get away – Cornwall’s first 50 came after 15 overs (3.33 per over) for the loss of 6 wickets. 24 overs later the second 50 came up – 105/8 off 39, a drop in the rate per over rate to 2.69. Quite superb bowling all round! Cornwall was starved of runs and frustration enabled us to snare a run out. Our bowlers figures speak for themselves!

Our chase – early hiccups, 65/3 with Tim and Ben out early. Chappie got to 19 but was run out but Tom Talbot (11) and Jesse rescued the situation. Jesse, in scoring 94*, continued his very fine form of the day before.

And some superb fielding! A magnificent catch by Ben Rainger off Rav’s bowling, another athletic catch by Tim, now a 36 year old youngster, Tom Hills kept his head to secure a smart run out and Tom Talbot and Chappie’s ground fielding was class, as always.

CraigSpeakman – returned from New Plymouth to see the conclusion of the game and to take these stunning photos:

Tom Talbot – back in form, copybook style and most effective!

Jesse Simpson – look how closely he watches the ball in these two shots, and the runs come.

Mark Chapman – home from Dubai and back in Parnell colours. Umpire Roy Goodyear watches – did he teach him his OD strokes?

Cricket Express T20 Competition

Wednesday, 2 December 2015 CORNWALL vs. PARNELL Cornwall Park 1a.

CORNWALL 161/7 (20) T Nidamanuru 75 (35), Mike Ravlic 1/30 (4), Will St John 2/54 (4) Jesse Simpson 1/21 (4) PARNELL 143/6 (20) Tim McIntosh 52 (37), Tom Talbot 56 (43), S Karnik 2/26 (4) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 18 RUNS

You Editor missed this game being enroute back from Adelaide. But rumours indicate we played untidily in the field – Corwall got away to a flyer, runs coming at 10+ an over, Then we pulled things back and to hold them to just 161 was a good effort. Tim and Tom gave us every chance with excellent knocks – particularly great to see Tom return to form! But wasn’t enough and we will have to make up for lost ground in the remaining 2 games.

Will St John – expensive early but came back well Tom Talbot – an elegant 56 Tim – 52 off 37 – a real T20 player!

Wednesday, 9 December 2015 PARNELL vs. GRAFTON UNITED Orakei Domain 2a.

GRAFTON UNITED 128/7 (20) PARNELL 129/5 (12) Tim McIntosh 39, Ben Horne 51 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 5 WICKETS

Tom Hils relishing being back from injury Ben Horne – a rollicking 51

Last eveing, back at Orakei, Grafton won the toss and, in overcast conditions, chose to bat. Fours came readily on the fast outfield but so did the first 3 wickets wickets with Ganesh and Rav on the attack. Grafton then made a stand, the spiners came on – Chappie and Tim. A couple of sixes – only Jonathan McInroy’s quick thinking (and hand) prevented your Editor being decapitated. But a snap stumping by Ben off Chappie brought some control back. Ben handed the gloves to Charles Bevin and bowled himself – another successful move. Tom Hills castled one round his legs and we were left to chase down 129.

To have any chance of going through to the next round, we needed a top run rate as we had lost the Cornall game a week ago. Tim and Ben Horne took up the challenge with a hiss and a roar – runs flowed from the outset with a succession of beatifully timed cricket shots. No slogging, just exciting shot making. Both were dismissed trying to force the pace but a comfortable win was assured. Jesse Simpson continued to force the pace, Chappie hit a well timed six but skied one but the win came on the first ball of the 13th over which was called wide . NEXT WEDNESDAY, 5.30PM START AT DEVONPORT DOMAIN vs. NORTH SHORE – A MUST WIN!

SHORE ROAD RESERVE UPDATE:

From the above you will see that we will be back playing again, shortly, at Shore Road Reserve. The contractors have done tremendously well and the Reserve is looking a picture. The Outdoor Nets have been handed over but minor work is still to be done. Protective coverings need to be put in place, for safety and to save wear on the balls.

Premier Reserves

28 November PARNELL vs. HOWICK PAKURANGA Orakei Domain 2.

PARNELL 141/8 (35) Ryan Turner 39 (67) EDEN ROSKILL 99/1 (16.4)

RESULT: DRAW – ABANDONED DUE TO RAIN (Earlier reduced to 35 overs each)

Stu Wood (XXL 1) puts some weight behind the ball Welcome back Ton Urry Walshy has tweeted from London – “Get the ‘keeper back Tom”

XXL 3 reporting: The Reserves were back in coloured clothing in the weekend and facing stiff opposition in the form of Howick Pakuranga at the Orakei Domain. After some heavy overnight rain starting on time was not an option. After some thorough work from assistant groundsman Chey Barnes a revised start time and number of overs was established. Each side would get 35 overs to bat.

Ryan Turner lost another toss and PCC were asked to bat on what proved to be a difficult wicket. Turner provided the bulk of the scoring, progressing to 39 before he was dismissed. Wides were the next biggest contributor and helped the home side through to a modest total of 141/8.

Howick Pak made batting look a little easier, helped by a few missed chances as they moved to 99/1 off 16 overs. At this point the weather gods intervened and a heavy downpour ended any chance of any more play in the day. As not enough overs had been completed the match was abandoned, a lucky escape for the PCC lads. Shared points being a great result in this case.

5 December PARNELL vs. HOWICK EDEN ROSKILL Keith Hay Park.

EDEN ROSKILL 190 Ben Rainger 6/14 PARNELL 191/1 Justin Rosenberg 110*, Simon Wood 52*

RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 9 WICKETS

XXL 3 reports: The Reserves played Eden Roskill on Saturday at Keith Hay Park. After a flowing, structured warm up, Skipper Ryan Turner lost yet another toss and the boys were asked to have a bowl.

Roskill got off to a quick start and it was left to Stu Wood and Tom Urry to put the breaks on. They did a good job and Razin Bharde continued the good work. Rising star Ben Rainger showed all his class and cleaned up the innings finishing up with a cheap six wicket bag.

Needing 191 to win the fall of an early wicket didn’t help the cause. Stu Wood caught sweeping with the total on 10. Simon Wood joined Justin Rosenberg and the pair set about their work. Rosenberg was sublime and at times explosive, making powerful deposits all around the ground. Wood plodded along at the other end and together the two reached the total the 37th over, securing a well fought 9 wicket win. A good result for the PCC lads.

Thirds – 2B Grade

28 Nov. & 5 Dec. PARNELL vs. NORTH SHORE Devonport Domain

PARNELL 119 Ettienne van Vuuren 38 & 171/2 dec. Matthew Vercoe-Curtis 97, Thomas Landrigan 35 NORTH SHORE 90 Gavin Poole 5/6 (7), Elliot Jaffe 2/23 (14), James Nuttal 2/17 (4) & 55/7 Christian Wylie 3/21 (6), Peter Hickman 1/5 (5)

RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st INNINGS POINTS TO PARNELL

Skipper Peter Hickman reporting: The 3rds travelled to Devonport for a 2 day game against North Shore. Winning the loss and elected to bat, a bowled favoured pitch caused our batsmen trouble, being all out for 119. Pick of the batsmen were Ettieene Van Vuuren, who scored a valued 38 under pressure. Gavin Poole and Matthew Vercoe-Curtis where the next best, scoring 15 and 12 respectively.

At the end of play on day one we had North Shore 57 for 4, Gavin Poole taking 3 wickets and Elliot Jaffe taking 1. Going into day two we knew we had our work cut out so we took 6 pace bowlers, we only needed to use 4. We bowled them out for 90, taking a lead 29 into the second innings. Gavin went on the complete his 5 for, finishing with figures of 5 for 6 from 7 overs. The other wickets were taken by Elliot Jaffe who finished with 2 for 23 from 14, Peter Hickman with 1 for 31 from 11 and James Nuttal 2 for 17 from his 4 overs. A fantastic effort from all involved. Credit also to Matthew Vercoe-Curtis who had no wickets for 11 runs from his 5 overs.

Our second batting effort was considerably better than our first. Declaring at 171/2, with a lead of 199. Matthew Vercoe-Curtis top scored with a fantastic 97, only to be caught on the boundary 3 short of his ton. Thomas Landrigan finished with 35, a innings which supported Matthew immensely.

The second bowling effort had the intention of winning outright, we came close, play drew to a close needing 3 more wickets. Wickets of the second innings were taken by Christian Wylie, who finished with 3 wickets for 21 runs off 6 overs. James Nuttal who took 1 wicket for 14 from 5 overs, Peter Hickman with 1 wicket for 5 runs from 5 overs and Gavin Poole who took 1 for 10 from his 3 overs. Overall a good first innings win and some very valued bonus points going further into the 2 Day Competition.

Sunday, 6 December PARNELL vs. EAST COAST BAYS Thos. Bloodworth Park 1.

EAST COAST BAYS 234 (38.4) Hamish McLean 3/48 (9), Elliot Jaffe 4/37 (6.5) PARNELL 236/6 (43.3) Matthew Vercoe-Curtis 64, Josh Milne 46, Kelly Lunow-Haldane 42

RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 4 WICKETS

Skipper Peter Hickman reporting again: On Sunday we ‘went toe to toe with a superb opposition’ and came out on top. We took on a strong East Coast Bays team which were second on the table only to PCC. Electing to bowl first the opposition posted a good but ‘below par’ score of 234. Wickets taken by Elliot Jaffe with 4 for37 from 7 overs, Hamish Mclean with 3 wickets for 40 from his 9 overs, Peter Hickman with 1 wicket from 6 overs and Gavin Poole with 1 wicket for 47 from his 5 overs, and James Nuttal with 1 wicket for 41 from 9 overs. In reply we had a solid batting effort, 3 players stood out, with Matthew Vercoe-Curtis scoring 64, Josh Milne making 46 and Kelly Lunow-

Haldane making 42. Other players added smaller knocks but these 3 deserve special credit. Credit also to Kelly who turned the chase well in our favour, sending their opening bowler for 20 runs in one over to make the run rate under 1 and ball.

Matthew Vercoe-Curtis – 97 & 56 last weekend Elliot Jaffe – decisively cleaned up the tail, 4/37

Gavin Poole – 3 succesive 5 fors prior to this game Pete Hickman, the Skipper

Pete concludes : In conclusion the 2 day win gave us some much needed points after the first day was rained out, and the One Day win leaves us remaining top of the One Day table moving into next year. Credit to all the players who played over the past fortnight, we showed why our goal of promotion is more than achievable. One Day 1A Grade

5 December PARNELL vs. GRAFTON UNITED Orakei Domain 2.

GRAFTON INDO KIWIS 167 Elliot Humphries 4/26, Mark Murphy 5/14 PARNELL 168/8 Scott Hillman 44, Rob Samuel 33

RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 2 WICKETS

Manager Richard Humphries commenting: I bet Whitney Houston’s mother, “Cissy”, had no idea that she would feature prominently at Orakei last Saturday afternoon. A glorious warm sunny day, a good grass wicket, full size field, and fast outfield, all meant a great game of cricket, with the ODPs winning again.

Grafton batted first, amassing 167 all out, with our Capt Mark Murphy unselfishly giving most of our team, who wanted to chance their arm, the opportunity to do just that. Grafton said thank you, and were blasting along, until Elliot Humphries came on and took 4, and then the wily skipper cleaned up the rest with a great 5 wicket bag, and all in front of his energetic young son, Harry.

Our reply was consistent, starting with Scott Hillman and Rob Samuel contributing well. But then Cissy Houston’s influence disappeared. You see, she was the founder of the all- female group, “The Sweet Inspirations”, whose claim to fame was the song of the same name. There was a festival at Orakei, and a great live band was belting out famous R&B songs all afternoon, including this song, which was proving fortuitous. We were creaming them!

But then the festival finished, the songs stopped, and 10CC stopped loving cricket, well, our cricket anyway. Wickets disappeared with the music, we were now out of tune. Ravi Pal helped a little with 17, until Tom Richards provided the encore, confidently holding his nerve and closing out the game.

One Day 3A Grade

5 December PARNELL vs. WAITAKERE

WAITAKERE ACS 243 (39.3) Sowndar 4/51, Hari 4/29 PARNELL KINGS 225 (35.2) Abrar 106, Mani 27

RESULT: WAITAKERE WON BY 18 RUNS

Captain Chak Arunachalam reports: The weather this Saturday was great, but unfortunately our team lost. Waitakere ACS won the toss and batted first. They were all out for 243. Chasing the total we lost wickets regularly and couldn't get a good partnership going. But Abrar from one end played really great and scored 106. But unfortunately he ran out of partners and he was the last man out trying save the match. We were all out for 225 with 5 overs to spare.

Presidents’ Grade

Our Pressies won on Saturday for the first time this season. This tanks to a century by Greg Olliver. No other details available.

ACA Grade Winner Years 9/10P Limited Overs Blue Pool – Parnell Gold

Auckland Cricket has advised that Parnell Gold has won this Grade, the Competition finishing on 28 November.

Manager/Coach Adam Mercer reports: A great start to the season for this group who have been together now for three years.

Highlights were  Christian Smyth's tremendous 102 , with 50’s from Max Smith, Jack Orell and Sam Hill along the way.  Best bowling figures were consistently from Luca Mercer, James Speakman and Ashwin Aran.  The real key to this success however, was their indomitable team spirit. All players contributed with plenty of guts and enthusiasm to every aspect of the game, and simply enjoyed playing cricket with mates

Well done boys, you have earned it.

GRADE 3. PARNELL JAGUARS vs. PARNELL PUMAS - WIN TO PARNELL JAGUARS Phillip Asworth describes the Jaguars first win if the season: The weather behaved itself for another great local derby of cricket. What a game it was with the Jaguars coming from behind to record their first win of the season.

The first two partnerships by the Jaguars were very solid with Aidan and Mac scoring the highest partnership of the year with 31. Some nice shots by Aidan to score 14. This was followed up by a great all around bowling and fielding performance with very few extras conceded. This allowed the Jaguars to have a 10 run advantage at the half way point. In the Jaguars second innings a great partnership of 27 by Rohan and Ben allowed them to post a competitive score of 96. Ben has his eye in this week and scored 3 lovely boundaries to top score on 17. The third partnership by the Pumas scored 39 runs which brought their total up to 85 so only 12 runs were required by their last pair of batsmen.

The challenge was on and the last 4 overs by the Pumas was just magnificent. Fantastic wicket to wicket bowling by Rory (2), Will (0) and Aidan (6) gave the Pumas a chance as the Pumas still needed 4 runs off the last over. Up stepped Rohan de Zoysa who bowled 6 great balls to grab a wicket as well as force a couple of run outs with his tight bowling to allow the Jaguars to take the win. The Jaguars only conceded 20 extras compared to 63 by the Pumas which says a lot about how important tight bowling is. It was a great team effort with everyone contributing therefore a tough decision for this weeks man of the match but it has to go to Rohan for that fantastic last over. Thanks to Andrew for scoring and very neat it was too (attached). [Some amazing stats have been provided – will be published when space permits – Ed.]

GRADE 4. PARNELL VETTORI 222 vs. AUCC SPITFIRES 49 - Win to Parnell by 173 runs Darryn Melrose reporting on their game last Friday evening: A nice summers night was the setting for Team Vettori to meet the AUCC Spitfires out at Colin Maiden. It tested the parents time management to be able to navigate the Friday night traffic but thankfully everyone made it with time to spare. Team Vettori has won every game so far this season so the quest was on the keep the wins coming.

And win they did, recording their biggest score to date: scoring 222 runs, with just 49 runs against.

George Wilby was awarded the player of the day with a fine bowling performance with two maiden overs and two wickets. The top runs were scored by Xavier Melrose (49) and Ashan Weerasinghe (46) - who also ended his bowling spell with –5 runs scored against. Maiden overs were also bowled by Zac Nathan and Sam McLeod. Spurred on by a half time fizzy drink, the team fielded brilliantly with two run outs and six catches, including one by Max Richardson who is having a great season with these. Many thanks also to our two guest celebrities who played for us…

GRADE 6. PARNELL ‘RATNAS’ 200/4 (28) vs. SUBURBS NEW LYNN 114 - PARNELL WON BY 86 RUNS

Phillip Lindberg reports: Parnell Ratnas played Suburbs New Lynn on Saturday. Parnell scored 200 for 4 off 28 overs and then bowled out Suburbs NL for 114. Included in this was a Hatrick to Connor Laycock who bowled the first 2 middle stump and then a superb catch by Sebby Ricketts made it 3 from 3.

Connor Laycock with the hat trick ball – congratulation!

[Note that the full name of Connor’s team is PARNELL RATNASABAPATY – named after our outstanding young Premier opening bowler, Ganesh Ratnasabapaty. Ganesh, a former Auckland Grammar 1st XI quick, has overcome a nasty knee injury which prevented his advance 2 seasons ago but he is back and showing excellent form this season – bowling with extra pace, accuracy and hostility! – Ed.]

GRADE 9/10 - Sat. 5 December PARNELL 236/3 vs. EAST COAST BAYS 113 - Win to PARNELL by 126 runs Highlight - Samson Chandulal 114*

Ruth Thielke reports: Quick update from the Gd 9/10 team currently playing 20/20 Comp. They are all grade 9 players with no grade 10s. Last Saturday they played ECB and scored 236/3. Samson Chandulal scored 114* his maiden ton! ECB were bowled out for 113. The lads also beat Cornwall in the second match (they play 2 matches on a Saturday afternoon). Last week of pool play this week and then on to semis & finals the week after. Great cricket played with fantastic spirit by these guys every week!

Samson Chandulal – 114*, may he hit many more!

Sunday, 6 December Field Day vs. Auckland University CC

An outstanding day for our Juniors! PCC won 7 matches to 2 overall with both the Fleming Willow and Auckland Aces Willow retained by PCC.

The Fleming and Auckland Aces Willows – the Trophies retained by Parnell on Sunday 6 Dec.

A very impressive performance all round.

GRADE 3A: Parnell Red 131 beat AUCC 66 by 65 runs Tom B (19 runs scored, 7 run conceded, net runs 12 ), Ishan D (14,3,11), Sam J (17,8,9), Varnan P (16,8,8), Marco A (10,8,2), Sam B (4,3,1), Guy L (0,0), Harry W (5,6), Oliver K (4,6), Brayden N (2,11).

That was a fantastic game of cricket. The boys supported each other extremely well and played with a positive spirit. We should be very proud of the team cohesion and the commitment in the field, where there were hard catches attempted and awesome fielding exhibited. Well done Boys. Thank you to the parents for the positive feedback. It was a lot of fun and very satisfying to see how well the boys performed and followed instructions. The bowling was exceptional (with 3 boys conceding under 3 runs per 2 overs, 2 under 6 and 4 under 8 and 1 conceding 11).

The batting was good but can be improved . Five boys got into double figures and the others got less than 5 runs per 4 overs ( about 12-14 balls faced). I truly believe that heavy bats impede proper stroke play. I would like the boys to get used to plastic bats (Orange Kookaburra plastic bat about $15, Players Sport) and use them for the next games. This will stop cross bat strokes, heavy reliance on the bottom hand and make the boys move their feet to the ball.

The MVP of the day was established by working out the greatest contributor to the team effort by taking the runs conceded while bowling from the runs scored. This was the fairest way of establishing the MVP as a number of players did very well and there was not a single event that changed the course of the game. Tom Boucher was awarded the MVP, congratulations Tom.

GRADE 4 Parnell 4A 87 beat AUCC 81 by 6 runs Top scorer and player of the day was Ashan Weerasinghe on 29 runs. Other batsmen to perform well were Jack Ricketts (21 runs) Charlie Dickinson (20 runs). Some good bowling from DJ Hawkesby (4 wickets) with Jack and Ashan also taking two wickets each.

Parnell 4B 73 lost to AUCC 80 by 7 runs Another close game. Run scoring was spread evenly between several players however Fred Gilbert and Finn Priddy put in great all round performances and took 3 wickets each.

Jacqui Sinclair has also sent me 4 great photos but I can’t copy them across –will be in the next issue.

A very good and timely message from Greg Hurvitz on Facebook – thank you Ian Trott for forwarding it to me.

Sky TV Visited the Club

First, Tom Urry posed for the camera:

Then it was Scotty Styris’ Turn:

Good to see Scott Styris back at the Club – here being interviewed by Sky Tv. Scotty explaining who RE Foster was – an England batsman who scored 287 on Test debut vs. Australia at Sydney, 1903/4. Foster also captained England at soceer. ’ 290 broke Foster’s record for a visiting batsman in Australia.

Adelaide and What Could Have Been

To the west – the grass embankment and, in the distance, St Peter’s Cathedral. Adelaide is one of the World’s great cricket grounds

The Toss – for once won by Brendan McCullum

The South Stands named after four Australian Football stars and, to the east, the Riverbank Stand. And which flag is which?

North – the Chappell Stand, the Sir Donald Bradman Pavilion and the Sir Edwin Smith Stand

Our spinners were a great deal more effective than given credit for – and almost won the game for us

The members’ hospitality area was filled to over-flowing

Author David Jenkins launched his book “The Eric Freeman Story” – on the stage are Freeman himself and Greg Chappell. The launch was very successful, judging from the queue to buy, and copies can be obtained if you contact David by email - [email protected]. Early next year, at North Shore CC, David will be launching his biography of Barry Sinclair.

And we so nearly had them – but the horse bolted!

Quiz

A good time to reintroduce the Quiz to see just how good memories are, to find whether grudges are harboured or just to remind our cross Tasman cousins that we have been rather “hard done by” over the years.

New Zealand played it’s first Test in 1929/30 and by WW 2. had played a total of 14 Tests.

QUESTIONS: 1. NZ played it’s very first Test, vs. England, in 1929/30. What season did NZ first play a Test against Australia?

a) 1930/31 b) 1938/39 c) 1945/46 d) 1948/49 e) 1953/54 Or f) 1973/74

2. By 1970 NZ had played 107 Tests in total against 6 different countries. How many of these had been played against Australia?

a) 40 b) 17 c) 9 d) 16 e) 12 Or f) 1

3. Umpiring controversies have been rife in NZ/Australian Tests and ODIs. Back in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, 1980/81 season, Australia were 9 down for 261 in their 1st innings. Almost immediately no. 11, was caught behind off a short ball from . Given “not out” and no ball called, that no. 11 then lasted 61 balls, Doug Walters completed a century and 60 added for the 10th wicket. Eventually NZ was set 193 to win (in 143 minutes + 20 overs in the last hour) but the Test was drawn with NZ 128/6. Just 65 short - that “not out” decision off Lance Cairns’ bowling was a crucial call:

a) Who was the Australian no. 11 batsman? b) Why did Umpire RC Bailltache call “no ball” to Lance Cairn’s ball – because i) Back foot was over the line? ii) Front foot was over the line? iii) Too many fieldsmen behind square leg? Or iv) The ball was intimidatory

4. In 1987/88, in the 3rd Test (another Boxing Day Test at Melbourne), Australia needed 247 to win with a minimum of 92 overs left on the last day. Wickets fell, 23,859 spectators were at the ground, Wisden reported that TV quiz shows were cancelled, Then, at 227, the 9th wicket fell – the last pair together, 4.5 overs scheduled to be bowled. In the penultimate over an LBW appeal was turned down, the final over was played out and the Test ended in a draw. Australia 230/9, 17 short of victory, NZ one wicket short.

Who a) were the two not out Australian batsmen? b) survived the LBW appeal in the penultimate over? c) bowled the penultimate over? d) had figures of 5/109 and 5/67 in the Test?

Last Words

The 3rd Test at Adelaide, in your Editor’s opinion: the was nothing wrong with the  pink ball (if the batsmen couldn’t see the seam then it was about time the bowlers had a turn!)  pitch – high time a more sporting surface was prepared!  DRS – just the application of it’s technology

Only drawback to Day/Night Tests in NZ would be the dew. Adelaide was perfect, great crowds, great atmosphere. However, on the playing side, the batsmen on both sides showed extraordinary lack of patience.
