Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.169 – Midwinter Issue ******* I.C.C. Cricket World Cup 2019 CRUNCH TIME!!!! Go Black Caps!!! GO LOCKIE, LOCKIE!!! Lockie Ferguson – for Parnell and for the Black Caps – PACE,PRECISION,PERFORMANCE New Zealand, the “Black Caps” – unbeaten until yesterday needs another win to clinch aSemi Final place. Lockie, our leading wicket taker to date with 15 wickets is a key figure. Pace is proving the deciding factor in this CWC. Mike Wood, for England, destroyed Australia’s middle and lower order with speeds of up to 150kph/94mph. then Mitchell Starc then cleaned out England with pace. Lockie averaged 146kph at the beginning of the Tournament – next best being Rabada at 141 . Here is hoping that he, Trent Boult and the rest of our attack can overcome the Pakistanis!- Lockie to Faf du Plessis – ball of the Tournament? Perfect yorker, beat him by sheer pace! Photo: cricketworldcup.com Sami, for India, used the yorker to capture his hat trick – why is it used used so seldom? BLACK CAPS’ SUNDAY (Sat. night) 12.30am vs AUSTRALIA Lord’s, London WEDNESDAY (3 July) 9.30am vs ENGLAND Chester-le-Street, Durham If qualified: SEMI FINALS 1. 1st vs 4th 9 July at Old Trafford, Manchester – 9.30pm 2. 2nd vs 3rd 11 July at Edgbaston, Birmingham – 9.30 FINAL 14 July at Lord’s, London – 9.30 Note that Semi Finals and Final have a reserve day What a marvellous Tournament so far. The NZ vs West Indies game had everthing – Guptill and Munro dismissed in the vey first over. Williamson and Taylor effected an amazing recovery and we ended with a defendable total. Williamson’s 146 truly remarkable. The West Indies reply – Boult an early wicket but Gayle and Hetmeyer looked invincible – but Lockie came on again, two quick wickets and we were coasting home. More wickets fell – 167/7 – the win inevitable – but Brathwaite was still there. And, as he had done vs England in the final over of the T20 World Cup, Brathwite took over – his 100 came up, just 5 to win off 3 balls. Neesham bowled, Brathwaite hit – a skier to long on, a certain 6 – except that Boult took an astonishing catch right on the boundary. Another win to the Black Caps! Comment has been made of the Black Caps consolling Carlos Brathwaite after the game and, overall, the CWC seems to be played in excellent spirit. So many of the players have been teammates in the IPL and Caribbeean League and are “good mates”. Last night in the England vs Australian game, Maxwell was caught off Wood – no snarling, aggressive sendoff from Wood , but a beaming, joyous smile from him for having put one over a good mate. Great to see the Sporit of Cricket adhered to! Lasting images from the West Indies game thanks to the CWC websites GO THE BLACK CAPS SATURDAY & WEDNESDAY!!! News from England’s Summer JAMES BEVIN OXFORD vs CAMBRIDGE 28 May 2019 at Lord’s OXFORD 227/9 (50) CAMBRIDGE 171/10 (43.4) RESULT: OXFORD WON BY 56 RUNS James was selected to play for Oxford to play in this annual match vs Cambridge at Lord’s. Marvellous experience – earlier in the season James had scored a century for Oxford but the thrill of playing a Lord’s far supassed that. James made 0 but Oxford won the game and he is pictured above , in the Long Room, holding the coverted trophy. An annual encounter (except for the War years) dating back to 1827. JOSH FISHER Josh (batting and bowling above) has joined Acton CC which plays in the Middlesex League. Josh is playing for both of Acton’s 1st XIs – Saturday and Sunday – and, last Sunday top scored with 68.His bowling wasn’t needed as Acton had a comfortable win. The day before, Josh sored 20 batting down the order and took 1/45. His Dad, John, say that Josh is having a great time and “can’t believe the amount of spin over there. Said he will have the sponners down pat when he returns for the coming season”. OF THE UK LADS FROM PAST SEASONS - 2017/18 - ALEX GRIMES, CAM WILLIS, ELLIOT FOSTER and JOE KINGHORN-GRAY Alex & Cam in Marbella Elliot Joe ALEX GRIMES, who was out here for the 2017/18 season, is scoring well for Appleby Frodingham CC – 97 (bowled reverse sweeping!!), 121, and, last Saturday, 73. Alex tops his Club’s batting stats with 527 runs at 52.70 and SR of 90.12. Alex’s work profile is on this link https://www.zestoptical.com/pages/meet-the-team.He is still ‘keeping and recently, when his team was short, called on CAM WILLIS to make up numbers. The two keep in contact and, recently, Alex and a cricket/work colleague had a holiday in Malaga as guests of Cam. Apparently Cam is not playing this season, concentrating on his rugby. ELLIOT FOSTER Elliot, also here in 2017/18, says he started the season well in Edinburgh for Royal High Corstorphine CC, ‘keeping and he hit two 80s. However his season has been curtailed by a hamstring injury. Elliot is at Loughborough University doing his Masters in Business Psychology which he expects to complete later this year. He also mentioned that JOE KINGHORN-GRAY has moved from RH Corstorphine CC to take up the position of Head Coach of Heriot’s CC. 2018/19 – HUGH TEESDALE and ZAC ESSENHIGH (no news, as yet, of Jack Marston or Jack Crace) Hugh bowling for Parnell Zac – for Cricket Wales U15 Boys vs England Women’s Senior Academy HUGH TEESDALE is still turning out for North Middlesex CC and last Saturday took 1/7 off 7 overs – tight bowling and he can be seen in action on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDe_l3ny9Xg&t=13869s . An amazing innovation and one to be considered by Parnell – cost according to Hugh could be up to 1500 pounds stg . “Good for fine sessions” says Hugh. His teammate, Joe Cracknell (Suburbs NL opener who scored 50 in the Jeff Crowe Cup Final), has hit a couple of big 100s and has just made his debut for the Middlesex 1st XI. ZAC ESSENHIGH turned 14 on 3 May and, after winning 2 tennis titles on his return to Wales in April, was selected for the Penarth CC Men’s 2nd XI which plays on Saturdays. Also, with games on Sundays, for Cricket Wales Under 15. For Penarth 2nds Zac was opening both the batting and the bowling. Full weekends and much travelling to the Cricket Wales games. Zac has scored consistently 20s, 30s and a couple of 50s – seldom dismissed as, having opened, he has carried his bat through to the winning of the game. Last Saturday two further promotions – Zac made his debut for Penarth 1st XI and for Cricket Wales’ U17 XI – very much the youngest player in both teams. In addition to all this cricket, Zac is back at school and is in the middle of exams.
