Photo provided by Greg James For NZ on Wednesday vs England, Mark came to the wicket when de Grandhomme fell 1st ball – 121 /3 with just 6.1 overs remaining. He hit 20 off just 13 balls, including 2 sixes, enabling NZ to reach 196/5 and, eventually, win by 12 runs – a very signiicant contribution. A large crowd gathered in the Mike Simpson Lounge to view the game, including Lockie Ferguson and Ben Horne. Parnell Premier Reserves packing away the covers, play already abandoned. A vital game for our Reserves, who are bottom (8th) on the President’s Cup Two Day Championship. They are playing Waitakere (7th) – a “must win” for both sides with the prospect of relegation to the Lower Tier looming. Just hope Day 2., 17 Feb. is fine!! The last three weeks have been tragic for the game – Senior Club grades being almost completely washed out, Junior games severely disrupted, if they got underway at all. Incidentally, last Saturday, despite a brand new cover being used along with new hessian, the pitch itself was absolutely saturated. The weather forecast for next weekend is also dismal, another tropical storm on it’s way. Global warming, yes – but due to our cows farting? And why haven’t all the carbon taxes that we are paying rectified this situation? Men’s Premier Grade - A Big Weekend Ahead Saturday17 Feb. Hedley Howarth Trophy Last Day of Round 7. End of Round Robin. Parnell vs.Takapuna at Onewa Domain. We lie 3rd, Points are carried forward to the Top 4 playoff . This was the only game played in that Grade, and, I believe, the only Senior game that took place. Men or Women, on the day. Congratulations to both sides, Parnell and Kumeu, in agreeing to play under such adverse conditions. National Provincial Over 60s Tournament A great turnout of Over 60s for the National Tournament at Petone last week. Several Parnell members – Rod Smith, Simon Payton and Mark Smith representing Auckland and Roger Harvey and Gary Rudolp for Northern Districts. The media release below sums up a most successful Tournament and announces the NZ Over 60 Team. Successful National Provincial Over 60’s Cricket Championship held in Petone. The third National Provincial Over 60’s Cricket Championship has just been completed at the Petone Recreation ground in Lower Hutt with the Canterbury team defending their title they won last year. All six provincial teams enjoyed a great week of cricket and friendship with Otago and Canterbury going through the round robin stages undefeated in first and second place. Wellington, Northern Districts, Auckland and Central Districts completed the finishing order. In the final Otago batted first and scored 162/7 in their 40 overs with Paul Facoory getting 43, Lindsay Hewitson 25 and Steve Pringle 21. This set a target of 163 for Canterbury to win and although Otago bowled very tightly Canterbury got their in the 35th over with Danny Langrope 42, Jeremy Wilson 40 and Phil Harris 30. The top run scorer for the 4 day tournament (noting that batsmen must retire when they score 40 runs) was Gary Rudolph from Northern Districts with 128 runs and the top wicket-taker Roger Harvey also from Northern Districts. At the final dinner the NZ squad which covers the two teams that will go to the Australian Over 60’s tournament in Penrith, NSW in November was announced. The squad is: Gus Klien, Peter Meads, Murray Browne, Simon Payton, John Davidson and Rod Smith Auckland; Gary Rudolph, Roger Harvey, Gavin Chatfield and Cliff King Northern Districts; Bruce Hooper-Smith, Gordon Kuggeleijn, Peter Nixon, Allan Pond and Kim Whittington Central Districts; Ewen Chatfield and Murray Riley Wellington; Andrew Nuttall, Danny Langrope, Jeremy Wilson, Lance Ryan, and Phil Harris Canterbury; John Cushen, Frank Skinner, Bevan Guthrie, Paul Facoory, and Owie O’Connell Otago. VSL News – Message from Peter McDermott Fingletoads to UK The Fingletoads Cricket Group are planning another trip to England in May next year coinciding with the Cricket World Cup that commences 30th May 2019. The tour is along the lines of the previous tours the Fingletoads have undertaken in the United Kingdom and will be based on the following draft preparations. We will be visiting some of our favourite p-laces in the Midlands and Southern Counties and will be limited to 36 people including escort/s (probably Dianne and me). The tour will feature visits to some wonderful villages in England with delightful local Clubs hosting the group at iconic village and country cricket grounds. The tour is open to players over the age of 50 and wives and partners are welcomed. The tour is inclusive not exclusive and players of all ages (over 50), ability, agility and experience are welcomed. Our teams play for the love of the game, play to the best of our ability but emphasise total enjoyment with friendly competition against like- minded teams. Though we compete as best we can on the field major features of the tour including renewing old friendships, creating new ones and enjoying the great social opportunities that arise at the Clubs that host us and the places where we stay. Umpires, supporters and family members are welcomed and in the past have been important members of the touring groups. Prices to be advised and will not include international travel, nor travel from Bath at the conclusion of the tour. We will prepare international travel prices as optional extras if required and if we have enough people travelling to London together will organise a group travel arrangement.
