Update No.143 - Yet Another Washout But Chappie Debuts for Black Caps

Mark Chapman (right) as a lad at Hong Kong CC meeting Brian Lara on the left. Photo provided by Greg James For NZ on Wednesday vs England, Mark came to the when de Grandhomme fell 1st ball – 121 /3 with just 6.1 overs remaining. He hit 20 off just 13 balls, including 2 sixes, enabling NZ to reach 196/5 and, eventually, win by 12 runs – a very signiicant contribution. A large crowd gathered in the Mike Simpson Lounge to view the game, including Lockie Ferguson and Ben Horne. Roy Goodyear, Chappie’s coach whilst at King’s College, flew to Wellington to see him debut first hand -Roy wasn’t disappointed. Very best wishes to Chappie for tomorrow’s game vs Australia at !

Yet Another Washout

10.30 am Saturday, 10 Feb. Parnell Premier Reserves packing away the covers, play already abandoned. A vital game for our Reserves, who are bottom (8th) on the President’s Cup Two Day Championship. They are playing Waitakere (7th) – a “must win” for both sides with the prospect of relegation to the Lower Tier looming. Just hope Day 2., 17 Feb. is fine!!

The last three weeks have been tragic for the game – Senior Club grades being almost completely washed out, Junior games severely disrupted, if they got underway at all.

Incidentally, last Saturday, despite a brand new cover being used along with new hessian, the pitch itself was absolutely saturated.

The weather forecast for next weekend is also dismal, another tropical storm on it’s way. Global warming, yes – but due to our cows farting? And why haven’t all the carbon taxes that we are paying rectified this situation?

Men’s Premier Grade - A Big Weekend Ahead

Saturday17 Feb. Hedley Howarth Trophy Last Day of Round 7. End of Round Robin. Parnell vs.Takapuna at Onewa Domain. We lie 3rd, Points are carried forward to the Top 4 playoff . Tomorrow – a need to stay in the Top 4 and reduce AUCC ‘s lead (6 points) and Papatoetoe’s (3) over us.

Sunday 18 Feb. Cup Semi Final - Parnell vs Cornwall At Shore Road Resrve – play commences 11 am Obviously another “must win”! Supporters, please come down to Shore Road and give support. Should be a great game – Cornwall are always competitive to say the least!

One Faint Ray of Light – Premier Reserve Women

3 February PARNELL vs KUMEU at Madill’s Farm

KUMEU 66/7` (18) P Beuvink 2/7 (3), E Farrell 1/12 (3), E Drumm 2/3 (1) PARNELL 67/6 (14) E Irwin 11

RESULT: WIN TO PARNELL

Late last week Tom Bassett alerted me to the great news that these girls had actually played, and won, their game on 3 February. This was the only game played in that Grade, and, I believe, the only Senior game that took place. Men or Women, on the day. Congratulations to both sides, Parnell and Kumeu, in agreeing to play under such adverse conditions.

New Zealand Over 60s Representatives

With these games becoming more frequent and gaining greater significance, it is essential to record Parnell representation. Craig Speakman is setting up the statistical register and, to date, Parnell members selected for National honours are:

2016 Gary Rudolf, Simon Payton, Rod Smith, Roger Harvey 2017 Gary Rudolf, Simon Payton , Rod Smith 2018 Gary Rudolf, Simon Payton, Rod Smith, Roger Harvey

Congratulations to these players who’s longevity in the game is most enviable! Long may they continue to take the field for New Zealand!!

Black Caps & Visually Impaired Players at the TJC

Black Caps with the VIP Players & Saint Kentigern boys came to support, too

Mitchell Santner turned his arm over and the Press had a field say – Brian Waddell being interviewed, tables turned on him! On Wednesday, fresh from their win vs England the night before, some Black Caps came to the TJC to support and held a group of visually impaired cricketers – see the photos below. “Blind Cricket” has beenplayed previously in the TJC and, some seasons back, they played regularly on Sundays on Thos. Bloodworth Park. The Thanks Black Caps and very best wishes for your game tonight vs Australia at Eden Park!

National Provincial Over 60s Tournament

A great turnout of Over 60s for the National Tournament at Petone last week. Several Parnell members – Rod Smith, Simon Payton and Mark Smith representing Auckland and Roger Harvey and Gary Rudolp for Northern Districts. The media release below sums up a most successful Tournament and announces the NZ Over 60 Team.

Successful National Provincial Over 60’s Cricket Championship held in Petone.

The third National Provincial Over 60’s Cricket Championship has just been completed at the Petone Recreation ground in Lower Hutt with the Canterbury team defending their title they won last year. All six provincial teams enjoyed a great week of cricket and friendship with Otago and Canterbury going through the round robin stages undefeated in first and second place. Wellington, Northern Districts, Auckland and Central Districts completed the finishing order. In the final Otago batted first and scored 162/7 in their 40 overs with Paul Facoory getting 43, Lindsay Hewitson 25 and Steve Pringle 21. This set a target of 163 for Canterbury to win and although Otago bowled very tightly Canterbury got their in the 35th over with Danny Langrope 42, Jeremy Wilson 40 and Phil Harris 30. The top run scorer for the 4 day tournament (noting that batsmen must retire when they score 40 runs) was Gary Rudolph from Northern Districts with 128 runs and the top wicket-taker Roger Harvey also from Northern Districts. At the final dinner the NZ squad which covers the two teams that will go to the Australian Over 60’s tournament in Penrith, NSW in November was announced. The squad is: Gus Klien, Peter Meads, Murray Browne, Simon Payton, John Davidson and Rod Smith Auckland; Gary Rudolph, Roger Harvey, Gavin Chatfield and Cliff King Northern Districts; Bruce Hooper-Smith, Gordon Kuggeleijn, Peter Nixon, Allan Pond and Kim Whittington Central Districts; Ewen Chatfield and Murray Riley Wellington; Andrew Nuttall, Danny Langrope, Jeremy Wilson, Lance Ryan, and Phil Harris Canterbury; John Cushen, Frank Skinner, Bevan Guthrie, Paul Facoory, and Owie O’Connell Otago.

Next years championship will again be held in early February 2019 at the Petone Recreation Ground in Lower Hutt.

VSL News – Message from Peter McDermott Fingletoads to UK The Fingletoads Cricket Group are planning another trip to England in May next year coinciding with the Cricket World Cup that commences 30th May 2019.

The tour is along the lines of the previous tours the Fingletoads have undertaken in the United Kingdom and will be based on the following draft preparations.

We will be visiting some of our favourite p-laces in the Midlands and Southern Counties and will be limited to 36 people including escort/s (probably Dianne and me).

The tour will feature visits to some wonderful villages in England with delightful local Clubs hosting the group at iconic village and country cricket grounds.

The tour is open to players over the age of 50 and wives and partners are welcomed. The tour is inclusive not exclusive and players of all ages (over 50), ability, agility and experience are welcomed.

Our teams play for the love of the game, play to the best of our ability but emphasise total enjoyment with friendly competition against like- minded teams. Though we compete as best we can on the field major features of the tour including renewing old friendships, creating new ones and enjoying the great social opportunities that arise at the Clubs that host us and the places where we stay.

Umpires, supporters and family members are welcomed and in the past have been important members of the touring groups.

Prices to be advised and will not include international travel, nor travel from Bath at the conclusion of the tour. We will prepare international travel prices as optional extras if required and if we have enough people travelling to London together will organise a group travel arrangement. Internal travel is per an airconditioned luxury coach. Games will be at leading village and club fields that are typical of country cricket in England.

Most of the destinations, hotels, clubs and fields are known to us and provide an outstanding England touring experience. Some are still to be confirmed but arrangements are coming together really well.

We are seeking expressions of interest from past and current Fingletoads and for those who wish to join the Fingletoads for this tour (and possibly future tours to follow). The Fingletoads is a spin-off from the Auckland University Cricket Club and is open to any interested cricketers, supporters, officials, wives, partners and family who enjoy the thought of touring in a relaxed friendly group enjoying true Village Cricket and the delightful regions and Clubs that will be visited.

The Fingletoads have previously toured Australia (several times), USA (California a number of times and the East Coast), India, South Africa, Argentina/Peru/Chile, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and England (several times) and also Italy and France. There are currently approximately 200 people on the Fingletoads mailing list with players drawn from principally New Zealand but including regulars from USA, Barbados, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The tours are organised and managed by Dianne and Peter McDermott of Vintage Sport and Leisure Ltd (VSL) based in Orewa, north of Auckland. The tours are generally not-for-profit but VSL direct costs are included in the price. Our established networks ensure we get excellent fixtures at great venues at very reasonable cost. Our hotel bookings are managed by the VSL Office in London who negotiate very good rates at very well- chosen hotels that suit the requirements of our teams.

This tour will sell out - if you wish to join the Fingletoads on an enjoyable and relaxed cricket tour of England please let us know by contacting Dianne McDermott - [email protected]

Quiz

With all this wet weather and washouts – one of your Editor’s few opportunities to get to Eden Park to see the Aces was thwarted last Sunday. Yours truly, instead, enjoyed the Winter Olympics and the sterling efforts of our Snowboarder and Speed Skater – dramatic viewing of some amazing athleticism, skill and stamina. And didn’t our Kiwis do well – medal opportunities were offering and not an Aussie competitor in sight. Then the mind turned to the need to produce an Update with no play to report. Good time to browse, turn up some obtuse issues, facts and figures in the hope of testing readers:

QUESTION 1. A current Parnell Premier player is related to AEJ COLLINS – name that Parnell player:–

Who was AEJ Collins? Note that, in 1899, AEJ Collins scored 628 in a school house match - extract from Wikipedia:

AEJ Collins - a studio photo of Collins after scoring 628 and, later, of him in the Clifton School 1st XI Photos from ESPNcricinfo Arthur Edward Jeune "James" Collins (18 August 1885 – 11 November 1914), typically now known by his initials A. E. J. Collins, was an English cricketer and soldier. He is most famous for achieving what was, for 116 years, the highest-ever recorded score in cricket: as a 13-year-old schoolboy, he scored 628 over four afternoons in June 1899. Collins's record- making innings drew a large crowd and increasing media interest; spectators at the Old Cliftonian match being played nearby were drawn away to watch the junior school house cricket match in which Collins was playing. Despite this achievement, Collins never played first-class cricket. Collins's 628 not out stood as the record score till January 2016 when an Indian boy, Pranav Dhanawade scored 1009 in a school game. Collins joined the British Army in 1902 and studied at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, before becoming an officer in the Royal Engineers. He served in France during the First World War, where he was killed in action in 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. Collins had been mentioned in despatches and also represented the Royal Military Academy at cricket and rugby union.

The Question, again, is . What is the relationship of AEJ Collins to a present Parnell cricketer?

QUESTION 2. The following all have two things in common: JULIUS CAESAR, JN CRAWFORD , DR JARDINE, AV BEDSER, .PBH MAY, JC LAKER, GAR LOCK, & SM CURRAN What are the two aspects in common?

QUESTION 3.> Of, the following England Test captains, who were actually BORN in ENGLAND? Sir Pelham WARNER, DR JARDINE, FR BROWN, MC COWDREY, ER DEXTER, DB CLOSE, AW GREIG, Nasser HUSSAIN, AN COOK

QUESTION 4.> Several current Parnell Premier and Premier Reserves players have played or has a parent or close relative who has played 1st Class or even . Please name a) the Parnell players who, themselves, have played 1st Class cricket b) those, and their relative(s), who have played 1st Class or Test cricket

QUESTION 5. Who, of the following Australian Test cricketers, never played ? FR SPOFFORTH, CG MACARTNEY, AF KIPPAX, SJ McCABE, Sir Donad BRADMAN, RR LINDWALL, KR MILLER, WJ O’REILLY, N O’NEILL, RB SIMPSON, AR BORDER, DK LILEE, JR THOMSON, IM CHAPPELL, SK WARNE, RT PONTING, SB SMITH
