Update No.122: 4 to 19 March 2017 the Race for the Championship – the Hedley Howarth Trophy Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.122: 4 to 19 March 2017 The Race for the Championship – the Hedley Howarth Trophy One game to go this Season - Parnell meets Takapuna at Onewa Road over the next two Saturdays. The two top teams – there can only be one winner. The Onewa pitch – bereft of grass, shades of Mumbai. It should be an absorbing battle! Some extraordinary cricket last Saturday (Day 2. of Round 2. - following the total washout of Day 1.). First, TAKAPUNA rolled EAST COAST BAYS by an innings and 48 runs. ECB were bowled out for just 55 – congratulations to Elliot Herd who took 8/32 off 6 overs. Elliot’s match figures were a scarcely believable 14/60. Takapuna’s outright gained them 11 match & 7.19 bonus points – 18.19 in all. Then at Shore Road ……………… Hedley Howarth Trophy – Two Day, Major Championship Top Four 11 & 18 Mar. Parnell vs. Papatoetoe at Shore Road 1. PAPATOETOE 128/10 (36) L Clark 26, A Sayed 38 FOW 5/1, 5/2, 47/3, 47/4, 47/5, 66/6, 67/7, 97/8, 128/9, 128/10 Mike Ravlic 15. 3. 42. 4 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 7. 1. 24. 0 Josh Fisher 11. 1. 45. 3 Lalit Bose 2. 0. 8. 2 Hamish Robertson 1. 0. 7. 1 PARNELL 457/10 (97) Tim McIntosh 74 (98), Ben Rainger 22 (37), Mitch McCann 63 (62), Tom Talbot 25 (24), Lalit Bose 69 (29), Dave Goddard 22 (20), Schalk Conradie 40 (24), Josh Fisher 123 (44 balls, 42 mins), AS Sohal 5/57 (9) FOW 56/1, 167/2, 174/3, 220/4, 272/5, 275/6, 289/7, 383/8, 457/9, 457/10 RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st Innings points to Parnell. Points: PCC 13.07, Papatoetoe 3.78 Josh Fisher - 123 off 44 balls (100 off 35) in just 42 minutes – 17 x 4s, 7 x 6s. This has to be an all time Club record. First, Rav bowled superbly to pick up his 300th Premier wicket for Parnell in just 5 seasons Ganesh, a “backside view” &, for once, wicketless Lalit – 2 quick wickets DAY 1. Complete washout – deluge meant not one ball was bowled DAY 2. Extraordinary, unbelievable – words don’t do justice to the cricket played last Saturday at Shore Road. First our bowlers – Papatoetoe, sent in to bat, floundered - 5/2 thanks to Rav. A wee recovery but Lalit, given the ball for once, struck twice and then Josh struck. Two stands of 30 and 31 stalled momentum but Rav came back, took 2, Josh skittled Bhupinder and Hamish diddled no. 11 – 128/10. What a batting feast! First , classic Tim - 74 & an opening stand of 56 with Ben then Mitch’s 63 off 62 balls – 10 x 4s & a 6 Lalit – set the real pace with 69 off 29 balls, no fewer than 7 x 6s & 3 x 4s Schalk - 42 off 24 with 6 x 4s (4 by reverse sweeps) & a 6. Then came Josh ….. !! Then we batted – chasing 129 for 1st innings points. A solid, steady start from Tim and Ben with the latter looking very good until he lost his wicket at 56. 87/1 at tea and, after the break all hell let loose. The lead gained, the hunt was for batting bonus points. News came through that Takapuna had ECB is appalling strife which upset Papatoetoe, too. They needed bowling points and were prepared to buy wickets at almost any cost. And it did cost – just look at the figures – Mitch stroked the ball superbly for his 62 and he and Tom Talbot, back after injury, had 100% strike rates. But that was nothing to Lalit’s onslaught – 238 SR for his 69 with 7 sixes. Lalit was dismissed, 5th out at 272. Hamish missed out and Dave, after a brisk cameo, left at 289/7. Enter Josh, no. 9, to join Schalk – sheer bedlam with Schalk reverse sweeping 4s at will and Josh clearing the boundary with the most remarkable display of clean straight hitting. In the final sesson of play – tea to stumps – 350 runs were scored, quite staggering! And a very vital 4.57 batting points secured. Paptoetoe must be congratulated for their very positive attitude and reaped 2,5 bowling points by capturing our 10th wickets just on stumps. Josh Fisher – 123 off just 44 balls in only (according to the scorebook) 42 minutes. His ton came up from 35 balls. The fastest ever 1st Class century recorded is PGH (Percy) Fender’s 103 in 35 minutes (balls 40-46, Surrey vs Northamptonshire, 1920). Josh’s innings must surely be the fastest ever in the Club’s history though there have been some amazing innings over the years. Dave Houpapa’s 119 vs an Auckland XI (60 odd balls) at our 150th Jubilee comes to mind but that was a T20. INDIVIDUAL CLUB CAREER MILESTONES REACHED ON SATURDAY OR IN RECENT WEEKS Jocelyn, our Scorer, has advised the following achievements: TIM McINTOSH 9000 runs Tim passed this mark on Saturday with his 74 & now has 9047, MIKE RAVLIC 300 wickets Achieved with his 4th & final wicket last Saturday – in just 6 seasons DAVE GODDARD 2000 runs and 200 wickets Achieved in the previous game vs ECB Jocelyn has sent the full season’s stats to date and there are some sensational aspects – see the batting Strike Rates! COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTED JUBILANTLY: After day one being completely washed out, day two started by our skipper Landie winning the toss (He has more luck than a ch.....n) and electing to bowl. This became a one man show with Billy Sanger returning the most amazing figures 14.3 overs 3 maidens 9 wickets for 23 runs Billy was on a hat trick on two occasions. An outstanding performance in any cricketing parlance! He was well backed up by: Karun Phogat with 1 for 13 off 6 overs and Henk Conradie with 5 overs 4 maidens 0 wickets for 3 runs and Hibiscus Coast were all out for 66 runs in the 28th over. Parnell batting: The idea being to get quick runs and set them a chase in the hopes of getting an outright. Flynn MacGregor-Sumpter a quick fire 35 off 36 Sam Varcoe 18 off 30 balls, he did rotate strike well with Flynn going well.. Henk Conradie sent in with the express purpose to have "a go" scoring 16 off 14 balls. James Mulvey chipped in with 23 off 19 balls Simon Wood kept the tempo going, scoring 25 off 18 balls with two large 6's. Billy Sanger was given the honour of upping the anti after his bowling success scoring 18 off 19 balls. Our innings closed at 137 for 6 wickets in the 23rd over. Hibiscus Coast 2nd Innings: They battled away to save an outright defeat with their innings held together by their skipper R Lakmal who scored an unbeaten 62. They ended the day on 128 for 9 wickets and leaving us no chance of a chase. Once again Billy Sanger came to the party with figures of: 13 overs 1 maiden 30 runs 4 wickets and giving him match figures of: 27.3 overs 5 maidens 53 runs 13 wickets K Phogat added to his season tally with 14 overs 3 maidens 58 runs 2 wickets. Will St John after a rather "slow start" to his day, add to the bowling attack in the 2nd innings with figures of 6 overs 1 maiden 3 wickets for 17 runs. Simon Wood bowled the last over, delivering some "floaters and bangers" of well disguised spin! In closing, another exemplary performance by "this team" • It was very good to have K Phogat back in the side after an absence this latter part of the season due to work commitments • Our slip catching (outstanding catches by Sam Varcoe and Flynn M-S) and our out fielding was top notch.

I guess the summer of 2019-20 will always be remembered as the season that ended early due to Covid- 19. Looking back now at March it all happened so quickly and it was with a sense of great disappointment that we had to cancel all our end of year prizegivings, miss out on the last two weekends of cricket and lock up the Indoor Training Centre for all of April. Now we can only hope that everything has settled down enough to allow us to enjoy a full season in 2020-21 and that all our members are healthy and safe. However, it was still another great year for Suburbs.

Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.

Heroes of the Weekend: Callum Douglas – 118* Lalit Bose – 219 off 113 balls Karun Phorgat – 6 for 43 1 & 2: Callum Douglas and Lalit Bose – for our Thirds vs. Grafton United, Callum scored 118* on his Parnell Senior debut and Lalit hit a colossal 219 off only 113 balls.Their 2nd wicket partnership of 292 falls just short of the Parnell Lower Grade Record for that wicket – 297 set by R Bracefield and J Wallace in 2013/14. Callum comes to us from the King’s College 1st XI, for whom he scored a ton last month, and he has previously represented Parnell in EDCA Age Group teams and Auckland Under 17s. Lalit arrived a fortnight ago from UK having recently graduated from Durham University. He represented the University in a 1st Class match, vs. Warwickshire, in 2015 but his real claim to fame is that in 2012 he hit a century for his school, Harrow, at Lord’s vs. Eton. 2: Karun Phorgat – the smile says it all, a 6 for for the Reserves. Karun, “Special K” to the Reserves for whom he is the spearhead, is originally from India but has played Premier Grade cricket in Melbourne. This is his first season with Parnell and is making his mark with his enthusiasm and, particularly, his quick bowling. He is the Reserves leading wicket taker with figures of 4/37, 4/50, 4/31 and 1/58 before getting this first 5 for! Men’s Premier Grade: Hedley Howarth Trophy – Major 2 Day Championship Round 4.

Enter Chappie (what joy to have our Aces back!), the pace was upped further. Ben Rae left at 113, but Chappie hit 5 sixes in his 20 ball 48. Wickets fell – 6/159 but Jesse and Dean stopped any rot developing, played many spectacular shots (Dean 4 x 6s) and were unbeaten at the end of 20 overs and a cracking total of 232. A hard act to follow. GU opened with their two pros - Nick Hendrie and Ian Cockbain (seasoned 1st Class batsmen for KwaZulu Natal and Gloucesteshire) – and started briskly – run a ball. No success for our pace attack, Mike and Dean but Jesse’s left arm spin got immediate results having both Hendrie and Cockbain caught – 2/47.
