Parnell Club

Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.122: 4 to 19 March 2017 The Race for the Championship – the Hedley Howarth Trophy

One game to go this Season - Parnell meets Takapuna at Onewa Road over the next two Saturdays. The two top teams – there can only be one winner. The Onewa pitch – bereft of grass, shades of Mumbai. It should be an absorbing battle! Some extraordinary cricket last Saturday (Day 2. of Round 2. - following the total washout of Day 1.). First, TAKAPUNA rolled EAST COAST BAYS by an innings and 48 runs. ECB were bowled out for just 55 – congratulations to Elliot Herd who took 8/32 off 6 overs. Elliot’s match figures were a scarcely believable 14/60. Takapuna’s outright gained them 11 match & 7.19 bonus points – 18.19 in all. Then at Shore Road ………………

Hedley Howarth Trophy – Two Day, Major Championship Top Four 11 & 18 Mar. Parnell vs. Papatoetoe at Shore Road 1. PAPATOETOE 128/10 (36) L Clark 26, A Sayed 38 FOW 5/1, 5/2, 47/3, 47/4, 47/5, 66/6, 67/7, 97/8, 128/9, 128/10 Mike Ravlic 15. 3. 42. 4 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 7. 1. 24. 0 Josh Fisher 11. 1. 45. 3 Lalit Bose 2. 0. 8. 2 Hamish Robertson 1. 0. 7. 1

PARNELL 457/10 (97) Tim McIntosh 74 (98), Ben Rainger 22 (37), Mitch McCann 63 (62), Tom Talbot 25 (24), Lalit Bose 69 (29), Dave Goddard 22 (20), Schalk Conradie 40 (24), Josh Fisher 123 (44 balls, 42 mins), AS Sohal 5/57 (9) FOW 56/1, 167/2, 174/3, 220/4, 272/5, 275/6, 289/7, 383/8, 457/9, 457/10 RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st Innings points to Parnell. Points: PCC 13.07, Papatoetoe 3.78

Josh Fisher - 123 off 44 balls (100 off 35) in just 42 minutes – 17 x 4s, 7 x 6s. This has to be an all time Club record.

First, Rav bowled superbly to pick up his 300th Premier for Parnell in just 5 seasons Ganesh, a “backside view” &, for once, wicketless

Lalit – 2 quick DAY 1. Complete washout – deluge meant not one ball was bowled DAY 2. Extraordinary, unbelievable – words don’t do justice to the cricket played last Saturday at Shore Road. First our bowlers – Papatoetoe, sent in to bat, floundered - 5/2 thanks to Rav. A wee recovery but Lalit, given the ball for once, struck twice and then Josh struck. Two stands of 30 and 31 stalled momentum but Rav came back, took 2, Josh skittled Bhupinder and Hamish diddled no. 11 – 128/10.

What a batting feast! First , classic Tim - 74 & an opening stand of 56 with Ben then Mitch’s 63 off 62 balls – 10 x 4s & a 6

Lalit – set the real pace with 69 off 29 balls, no fewer than 7 x 6s & 3 x 4s Schalk - 42 off 24 with 6 x 4s (4 by reverse sweeps) & a 6. Then came Josh ….. !!

Then we batted – chasing 129 for 1st innings points. A solid, steady start from Tim and Ben with the latter looking very good until he lost his wicket at 56. 87/1 at tea and, after the break all hell let loose. The lead gained, the hunt was for batting bonus points. News came through that Takapuna had ECB is appalling strife which upset Papatoetoe, too. They needed points and were prepared to buy wickets at almost any cost. And it did cost – just look at the figures – Mitch stroked the ball superbly for his 62 and he and Tom Talbot, back after injury, had 100% strike rates. But that was nothing to Lalit’s onslaught – 238 SR for his 69 with 7 sixes. Lalit was dismissed, 5th out at 272. Hamish missed out and Dave, after a brisk cameo, left at 289/7. Enter Josh, no. 9, to join Schalk – sheer bedlam with Schalk reverse sweeping 4s at will and Josh clearing the boundary with the most remarkable display of clean straight hitting. In the final sesson of play – tea to stumps – 350 runs were scored, quite staggering! And a very vital 4.57 batting points secured. Paptoetoe must be congratulated for their very positive attitude and reaped 2,5 bowling points by capturing our 10th wickets just on stumps. Josh Fisher – 123 off just 44 balls in only (according to the scorebook) 42 minutes. His ton came up from 35 balls. The fastest ever 1st Class century recorded is PGH (Percy) Fender’s 103 in 35 minutes (balls 40-46, Surrey vs Northamptonshire, 1920). Josh’s innings must surely be the fastest ever in the Club’s history though there have been some amazing innings over the years. Dave Houpapa’s 119 vs an Auckland XI (60 odd balls) at our 150th Jubilee comes to mind but that was a T20.

Billy Sanger – Hero of the Day! 9/23 and 4/30 Match figures of 27.3 3 53 13 Outstanding!!!

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTED JUBILANTLY: After day one being completely washed out, day two started by our skipper Landie winning the toss (He has more luck than a ch.....n) and electing to bowl.

This became a one man show with Billy Sanger returning the most amazing figures 14.3 overs 3 maidens 9 wickets for 23 runs Billy was on a hat trick on two occasions.

An outstanding performance in any cricketing parlance! He was well backed up by: Karun Phogat with 1 for 13 off 6 overs and Henk Conradie with 5 overs 4 maidens 0 wickets for 3 runs and Hibiscus Coast were all out for 66 runs in the 28th over.

Parnell batting: The idea being to get quick runs and set them a chase in the hopes of getting an outright. Flynn MacGregor-Sumpter a quick fire 35 off 36 Sam Varcoe 18 off 30 balls, he did rotate strike well with Flynn going well..

Henk Conradie sent in with the express purpose to have "a go" scoring 16 off 14 balls. James Mulvey chipped in with 23 off 19 balls Simon Wood kept the tempo going, scoring 25 off 18 balls with two large 6's. Billy Sanger was given the honour of upping the anti after his bowling success scoring 18 off 19 balls. Our innings closed at 137 for 6 wickets in the 23rd over.

Hibiscus Coast 2nd Innings: They battled away to save an outright defeat with their innings held together by their skipper R Lakmal who scored an unbeaten 62. They ended the day on 128 for 9 wickets and leaving us no chance of a chase.

Once again Billy Sanger came to the party with figures of: 13 overs 1 maiden 30 runs 4 wickets and giving him match figures of: 27.3 overs 5 maidens 53 runs 13 wickets

K Phogat added to his season tally with 14 overs 3 maidens 58 runs 2 wickets. Will St John after a rather "slow start" to his day, add to the bowling attack in the 2nd innings with figures of 6 overs 1 maiden 3 wickets for 17 runs. Simon Wood bowled the last over, delivering some "floaters and bangers" of well disguised spin!

In closing, another exemplary performance by "this team" • It was very good to have K Phogat back in the side after an absence this latter part of the season due to work commitments • Our slip catching (outstanding catches by Sam Varcoe and Flynn M-S) and our out fielding was top notch. • Commending Razin for the amount of work he puts in off the ball, he is a true hunter in the field; young cricketers should take heed of this!!

Congrats to all, now for the last hurdle!

Skipper Pete won the toss, batted and the openers got us off to a sound start by each scoring 20s. Will Ormiston capitalized on this and was outstanding in scoring 118*. The rest chipped in usefully and the innings was closed at 60 overs., 8 down and Will undefeated. By stumps the Lions were 55/4 – Pete had taken 1 wicket, Gavin 2 and Conor Austin, on debut, 1. A very good days work against the 2nd side on the Table. [Sorry Will – I have no photo of you, your knock deserved better recognition! Ed.]

SKIPPER ELLIOT HUMPHRIES REPORTING: Another lost toss from the skipper meant we were inserted to bowl. Simon Walker continued his good form by takin 3 early wickets to leave Birkenhead 25/3 after the first 10 overs. From there the skipper was introduced to do some damage. The pacers tied up one end

while the skipper took 6 wickets, skittling Birkenhead for 120. Ashwin supported well with 1 wicket, while Sam and Dan also bowled well keeping the run rate down.

From there, the batsmen did their jobs, pushing the lead past 60 by the close of day. The pick of the Batters was Ryan Humphries (the second best Humphries) who scored a quickfire 58 from 27 balls. Scott Hillman also contributed with 31 and Ankur scoring 30 to leave the side in a commanding position at 195/5.

As the last day of the season approaches, the boys will be looking to go out on a high and record a big outright win

Simon Walker – 3/29 Elliot Humphries – 6/24 Seen at Shore Road Last Saturday

Shortly before start of play in the Prems’ game, a group arrived, surveyed the scene and one or two notables were spotted by the paparazzi. Ish Sodhi, presumably debating the merits of spin vis a vis pace with Sir Richard. A great deal of attention surrounded that long forgotten Parnell batsman of yester year – Mark Turner – but he was off in a flash and avoided futher interviews. Photographer Craig – did you, or anyone else, capture the moment for archival records? Photos of any quality would do – could always be buffed up. Question to Mark – was Sir Richard persuaded to do the “harakeke run”?

Ish, Sir Richard and others “Turns” and Annaliese

Mark and Annaliese – very best wishes to you both for your forthcoming wedding and for the future from all of us at Parnell Cricket Club

Junior News

MESSAGE OF THANKS FROM CHAIRMAN CRAIG PRESLAND TO COACHES IAN TROTT, SIMON HERBST, JONATHAN McINROY, HENK & SCHALK CONRADIE, HAYDEN STOREY & LALIT BOSE:

Confirming the results of our 4 junior rep fixtures this season (grades 4 to 7)

• PCC v Grafton United CC, Nov 2016: Parnell won 6 matches to 3 • PCC v Auckland University CC, Dec 2016: Parnell won 7 matches to 3 • PCC v Howick Pakuranga CC , Feb 2017: Parnell won 5 and a half matches to 3 and a half (one match was tied) • PCC v Cornwall CC, March 2017: Parnell 4, Cornwall 4

Apart from Grafton these clubs all have more junior players than us, Cornwall about double. I was particularly pleased with the Cornwall result played last Sunday. As you may know both clubs decided to play for the Crowe Morgan Cup for the first time, this being awarded to the overall winner, and the honours were shared (going back 5 or 6 years ago I can recall being whitewashed 8 to nil). What a great way to start with this new trophy, Martin Crowe would have been pleased looking down upon Cornwall Park last Sunday afternoon with approx. 200 boys, girls and parents at the prizegiving, it was just over 12 months ago that he passed away. It was also great to have Ross Morgan attend having travelled up from Whangamata and now around 75 years old (over 13,000 Men’s Prem runs for PCC and almost 700 wickets). For those of you new to PCC our rivalry with Cornwall CC goes back over 130 years, one of the longest and I would suggest most keenly contested across all of NZ cricket. To me these results above are a reflection of the excellent junior coaching and systems that we have in place at PCC, grades 1 through to grades 9/10. There is no doubt that our pro coaching (junior and senior) sets us apart from other clubs in Auckland, along with the TJC itself. We were the only club in Auckland this season to field 9 prem grade teams across grades 6, 7 and 8, this providing our players with the opportunity to play a higher standard of cricket, and with a longer duration, in the afternoons when conditions are usually superior to those in the morning (8.30am starts, wet pitches, dew on the outfield etc). In addition I have heard nothing but positive feedback in relation to how the players have conducted themselves during these rep games (parents too!), playing within the right spirit of the game, very little dissent shown, accepting the umpire’s decision, applauding the opposition etc. That is also a reflection of your effective coaching.

CORNWALL FIELD DAY – SUNDAY, 19 MARCH – for the CROWE MOGAN CUP:

A highly successful day by all accounts – 4 games each, rather a fitting result. A further game, outside this contest, played on Shore Road no. 1.between the Grade 8s, was won by Cornwall quite convincingly by 8 wickets.

In their hey day – Ross Morgan and Martin Crowe

The contest was for the Crowe Morgan Cup which honours the memory of Martin, who died 12 months ago, and the evergreen Ross. Martin, who did so much for NZ and Cornwall cricket, and Ross, a Life Member of Parnell and who played 20 Tests for NZ, were the pre-eminent schoolboy cricketers of their eras – Ross being selected for Auckland at just 16, Martin when a 17 year old. Highly appropriate that our youngsters today compete for a Cup that honours them.

AT THE FIELD DAY – OUR VICTORIOUS GRADE 5A TEAM at Waikaraka Park &, then, at Cornwall for the Prizegiving:

ALSO VICTORIOUS – OUR GRADE 5B TEAM:

Back: Coaches Mike Roberton & Julz Nathan Middle: Zac Nathan, Christian French, Sam McLeod, Tom O’Donnell, George Wilby, Zach Freeland Front: George Sinclair, Finn Priddy, Luca Roberton, Blake Hayes, William Lawrence-Vaivai Thanks to Jacqui Sinclair for the photo & this following Report: The boys all bowled well with Tom ODonnell taking two wickets and William Lawrence-Vaivai one wicket and a runout off his one over. They then easily chased down Cornwall’s score of 111/6 with the loss of only one wicket. Top run scorers were George Wilby (29 not out), William Lawrence Vaivai (26) and George Sinclair (25 not out). A big thank you to Mike Roberton and Julz Nathan for the time they have given to coaching this team over the season and the great team spirit they have built amongst this talented bunch of boys.

Kings were keen to win the game and seal the top spot for the grade. After losing the toss on a flat wicket, Kings were forced to bowl first. Opponents got off to a good start and didn't lose a wicket until the 12th over. Kings were bit edgy in the filed, allowing the batsmen to take quick singles and two's. First wicket was a brilliant run out by Abrar and Chak. This gave Kings the much needed break through. But couldn't get quick wickets to pull things back. Sundar was introduced into the attack and got the opener to nick one through to the keeper. The very next ball, batsmen had his stumps shattered. Sundar was on a hat-trick for the second time in the last two games. Batsmen survived the scare and managed to put bat to ball. Opponents slowly accumulated runs and added around 50 runs for the fourth wicket. Abrar cleaned up the batsmen when he tried to heave over mid-wicket. Next over, Chak got rid of the well settled batsmen when he pulled straight to Sowndar at deep mid-wicket. Kings managed just one more wicket - Arul took a regulation catch at slips of Abrar's bowling. Opponents set a challenging target of 242 on a ground where boundaries were hard to get. It wasn't a greatest of starts for Kings as Arul was caught behind in the first over without scoring a run. Next over, Abrar was held at point. Opponents took a beauty at slips to see Roy walking back early. Kings were 3 down for literally nothing on the board. Sowndar and Vignesh were promoted up the order but didn't go as expected. Kings kept loosing wickets at regular intervals and none of the batsmen other than Sundar made an attempt to stay in the middle. Sundar batted with elegance and scored all over the ground. Pity that he didn't have a batting partner he could trust and was left alone with an unbeaten 47. Kings were bundled out for 170. Some quality cricket this season, Roopesh & his boys are confident and up for the Kings have to come back strong in the next game and play all the cards right to emerge on top. Having played challenge. Best Performer for Kings: Sundar.

MESSAGE FROM DIANNE McDERMOTT BARBADOS!!!! The trip of a lifetime!

If you have ever watched a televised cricket match from the West Indies and thought to yourself, one day I would love to go there – this is your chance!!!! The Fingletoads have travelled to Barbados before for a Vintage Cricket Carnival, and because of the many requests for us to return there, we have entered two teams in the Golden Oldies Cricket Festival in Barbados in May. The hotel we are booked into - The Radisson, is the Festival hotel and is idyllically placed on the edge of the most beautiful little beach. With an extended pier at the end of the hotel that hosts live music and drinks each evening; the open sided restaurant where breakfast is served; to the marvellous positioning enabling easy access to St Lawrence Gap to enjoy all the restaurants and bars there; the cbd of Bridgetown where Duty Free shops abound; Hole Town – home to spa resorts and the incredible homes of the rich and famous; this truly is the destination that has something for everyone! We have two teams entered for the Festival – one is touring; assembling in Los Angeles and playing what will be a great fixture and fabulous day at Woodley Oval with our longtime friends The Hollywood Golden Oldies. Anyone who has been with the Toads through Los Angeles before will know how incredibly hospitable this team is and how much they love hosting us. They have some special catering, after match entertainment arranged and most importantly – they are organising for some of their older players to be there to catch up with everyone. From there we head to Miami where a fixture against the Miami masters is scheduled. A fantastic opportunity to visit this diverse and colourful City with it’s great architecture, amazing shopping and restaurants and of course, the plastic pink flamingos! The touring team then heads to Barbados where we are joined by a number of travellers either cruising, or flying in for the ten days there.

Whichever appeals to you – the full tour; part tour or even just the Festival week – take this opportunity to travel to Barbados for what really will be the trip of a lifetime. The full final itinerary is attached and details all prices – however, I am only an email away if you require special pricings to suit your dates.

Peter and I will be leading the team with fantastic support from Rex & Jan Hooton and Geoff & Sandy MacLeod-Smith. Others committed are:-

David Miller (Christchurch, NZ) Peter McDougall (Sydney, Australia) Carl Duncan (Melbourne, Australia) Tony and Sandy Bateman (Vancouver, Canada) Greg and Margaret Schumacher (Reporoa, NZ) Andrew and Sharon Welch (Taupo, NZ) John Steer (Auckland, NZ) Graeme Young (Rotorua, NZ) Dan Healey (Auckland, NZ) Roger Carroll (Auckland, NZ) Tony Walsh (Christchurch, NZ) Tony Adcock (Christchurch, NZ)

Those joining us in Barbados:- Jai and Maria Jadhav (Canada) Dave and Rani Mann (Canada) Bob and Lena Adie (Canada) Matt Josephson (NZ) Keith and Pauline Rawlings (NZ) David and Karun McNamara (Australia) Craig and Maren Harford (NZ) Chris and Karen Ford (NZ) Lingard Goulding (Ireland)

We now also have a full time broker working with us – Sarah is bonded through Flight Centre and so there is full TAANZ protection on all she does, but more importantly – she has full access to incredible fares through Flight Centre. She has already done most of the bookings I am aware of for this trip and she has managed to find some fantastic options and routes for those who have booked. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Please let me know if you would like her details.

I have rooms on hold at all the hotels until the end of January, so please let me know if you are interested in joining us and I can help with any queries you might have, any advice you might need and also, encouragement to be part of the teams going to this fantastic destination!
