Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 9 LIFE MEMBERS PRESENTATION MARCH 2015 In a special function at the Papatoetoe Sports Centre one Saturday last February the 13 living Papatoetoe Cricket Club Life Members and close family members received a framed photograph of the old pavilion. Club stalwart Dave Dowling-with expert guidance from brother Tony and Richard Tremberth - used wooden floorboards, complete with sprig marks, recovered from the old clubrooms before demolition as frames for each picture. These were presented to each Life Member in a moving ceremony hosted by our President-Nigel Hurst. It was a poignant occasion for all Life Members and all will treasure these as a memento of golden days, long ago. Well done to all involved-a wonderful tribute to our Life Members.

10 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 Sydney Graham Gedye “Gedge” 1929-2014

Graham moved to the Papatoetoe Club for the 1956-57 season after ten seasons with the Railway Club playing in the City and Suburban competition at the Auckland Domain. He had been a leading player at the Domain, captaining the City and Suburban Rep side and being selected as 12th man for Auckland against the West Indies in 1955. Graham and Roger Harris soon formed an opening partnership lasting 16 seasons and renowned as “the Old Firm” – remarkably they had been born in the same nursing home in Otahuhu four years apart. Graham totalled 8339 runs for Papatoetoe Premiers over 16 seasons including ten centuries. Graham was heavily involved in club administration, as Club captain in 1965-66, committee member from 1966-68 and convenor of selectors from 1966-72, the first two years as sole selector. As a fully qualified coach he continued for many years to coach club players with skill and enthusiasm. He was also a mentor to many of our more recent Premier Captains and players, passing on his knowledge and experience. Graham toured Australia with three successful Papatoetoe club teams, in 1959, in 1968 as Manager and 1971 as Captain. Graham was elected a Life Member in 1974. Graham completed a successful representative career after 45 games for Auckland including three centuries culminating in a late call up for four tests opening for NZ against South Africa in 1963-64 and Pakistan in 1964-65 scoring two half centuries. Graham was an outstanding all round sportsman, representing the Auckland Rugby team in seven games at fullback in 1954, playing club rugby for Manukau Rovers. He was also an A grade table tennis player, low handicap golfer and after cricket was heavily involved in lawn bowls culminating in his election as a Life Member of the Homai Club. Graham’s family were very supportive, his father Arnold was scorer for the Premier team, wife Betty was a good mother and home maker to their family and son Roger inherited Graham’s love for cricket. Graham was an outstanding Papatoetoe club man and will be well remembered for his contribution to the club and to cricket over many years.

18 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2014

Another year has once again seemed to have gone by quickly; it has been a pleasing time both on and off the field for the club once again as our teams continue to strive for results and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with playing for Papatoetoe. Once again our clubs day to day running has been handled well by our club manager Simon Poole (Life Member), his passion and commitment to Papatoetoe Cricket is second to none. Again Simon’s dogged approach to registration and the subsequent subscription collection sees us with a huge success rate in this area and the envy of many clubs in Auckland. Garry Wood, our Director of Coaching and Development has once again excelled in this area and the results and accolades we have received both from Auckland Cricket, local schools and parents alike are a result of his commitment, dedication and hard work. This coupled with Garry’s commitment to helping with our running of the club especially around policy procedures and structure is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Pankaj Chhiba for overseeing our financial position and always being available to help and guide us in this area whilst juggling his own busy schedule. The work and guidance provided by Gary Troup is unbelievable, his work in obtaining that all important funding that we are constantly seeking in helping in the day to day running of the club along with his passion for all things Papatoetoe makes him a great man to have on our side. The work of these mentioned gentlemen along with Megan’s continued help makes the running of our club and the Chairman’s role a pleasure to be involved in. The decision to head toward a smaller management committee and a separate cricket committee this year has worked reasonably well although it may require a little further tweaking, initial responses and feedback have been positive, however from a succession planning view a slightly larger management committee is probably required. To the PSCCT –Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust Board, thank you.A Special thanks to also to Justin, Andi and Tarryn from the Trust staff for always being there to help with our needs and requests on a daily basis. The Choose Sport Initiative has once again been a positive factor for our club providing real support with the Club’s efforts to recruit new members and I thank Justin, his staff and the board for their support. Like all organizations funding continues to be a major source of revenue (sadly), and as mentioned we are very fortunate to have the guidance and expertise of Gary Troup within this field- we are grateful for his commitment in helping us with this process and the successes we have achieved are down to his passion and commitment. To all of our sponsors and Charitable trusts and especially Auckland Cricket who continue to support us, thank you so much. Moving forward it would be unwise of us as a club to think we can continue to think we can rely on continued funding and grants from charitable trusts-so on going planning and good management is imperative moving forward and we believe our budget for the coming year reflects this. Results on the playing field were once again encouraging, and no doubt mentioned in greater detail in various reports, but I must comment on the outstanding achievement of our Premier Reserve side for a fantastic season and the results they achieved throughout the year.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 19 Sadly the club had a couple of judicial incidents during the year that did not reflect well on what we as a club represent and expect Following the official ACA review we conducted our own investigations resulting in further sanctions for those involved in the incidents in question, Papatoetoe Cricket has a proud history and high values and we will not see these be compromised by any individual or team. After 2 years in the role Gareth Shaw has decided to relinquish the Player/Coaching role at our Premier/Reserve level. The structure and management he has provided has seen us produce some excellent results and the continued development of the players under his guidance see us enter an exciting time for cricket at our club, and I look forward to the season ahead. Thank you Gareth for your commitment, passion and enthusiasm you brought to the club throughout your career and more recently your coaching and we wish you well for your future endeavours. I am pleased to report that that we have been able to appoint another of our great stalwarts and servants to our club on the field to the Player/ Coaching role in Bhupinder Singh. Bhups’ planning is well under way for the coming season and we are enthusiastic with the direction and involvement he has proposed as we are sure he will continue to develop and build our senior structure both on and off the field. To all our volunteers, coaches, mangers and parents thank you all very much for your efforts during the season, but we still require more of you, and I encourage you all to get involved in your club in the upcoming season and beyond. We will all need to help out, be in large or small contributions to make sure our club continues to perform and function efficiently.

Peter Boyd Chairman Papatoetoe Cricket Club

20 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is hard to believe another season has come and gone but what a season it has been. Firstly I would like to thank the Committee for their tireless work in keeping our club running smoothly through what can only be described as difficult times. Not that long ago a Saturday for most people was a day off. In modern times it has become in reality another working day. Young people have far more choice as to how to spend their free time and a day in the field is not as enticing as it used to be. To Peter Boyd and his hard working team thank you for giving up your time to ensure the future of our club remains in good stead. Our club manager Simon Poole works tirelessly to keep the day to day problems in check. Thank you Simon you are a valued member of our Papatoetoe family. The Black Caps this past season have set the imagination of the New Zealand public on fire. We as a club need to cash in on this and make ourselves the club of choice for those riding the wave of popularity the National team has set in motion. Perhaps Open days early in the season with Premier players and Coaches being available to provide a bit of expertise. We need to get our Premier players known within the community. Perhaps this would be one way to achieve that. This year we celebrated much success on the field. Our Premier Team in the capable hands of Gareth Shaw and Bhupinder Singh remained in the top grade, a fantastic achievement when you look at their age and experience. A definite plus for us as we move forward. Well done men-pre season training starts now! Our Reserves led by club stalwart VJ Soma proved the depth in our club by grinding out a season that culminated in winning the Two Day Championship, a fantastic result for a promising group of young men. The B2 team captained by Rajeev took out everything that was on offer, another wonderful achievement. Our U/18 team also had success taking out the One Day Blue title. Many thanks to Ossie for his outstanding work with these young men. In the junior grades our Year 6B team won their title well done boys. To all who coached or captained a side please know your contribution to our club is very much appreciated. On a more sombre note this season saw the sad passing of club legend Graeme Gedye. It was tremendous to see so many past and present players attend his farewell. I remember Gedge well. As a young man turning up to the nets for the first time I was introduced to him, standing behind the nets casting an eye over the players for the impending season. Walking into bat in the first net and facing a tall left arm fast bowler he decided after two

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 21 deliveries I should move down to the third net before an ambulance was called. I have been grateful to him ever since. Graeme Gedye fiercely competitive on the field a gentleman off it. His frankness and honesty coupled with a loyalty so often rare these days will be missed but fondly remembered. His partnership with fellow life member Rodger Harris is in itself legendry. When if ever, has there been two men open for their club, province and country. Our Life members are a treasure that all club members need to acknowledge and know. They are often at the club on a Saturday supporting the various teams. This past season they were honoured with a special presentation. Dave Dowling a few years ago decided to remove some of the old floor boards when the old club was demolished. Over the next few years he had them made into picture frames complete with stud marks. Into these frames he placed a black and white photo of the old club house and on Waitangi day this year he presented his gift to them. A very moving and emotional day for all concerned. Thank you Dave your vision is now a reality. The fact that every Life member attended shows the loyalty they have and what the club means to them. They had no idea why they were invited but I know each one greatly appreciated your efforts as we all did on that very special day. As we move forward to the next season of cricket I hope that you all reflect on what has been an outstanding season on and off the field. The challenge as we move forward is to identify areas where we can improve as a club. I would like to thank Justin and his wonderful team for keeping the beer cold and the chips hot. We have a tremendous facility and should all be proud of it. I wish you all a warm and safe winter. Here’s hoping the All Blacks can go one step further than the black Caps. See you all in October.

Yours In Cricket Nigel Hurst President

22 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 CLUB MANAGER’S REPORT

Once again it was a mixed season for the Papatoetoe Cricket Club during 2014/15. Successes at both Senior and Junior level were offset by problems like decreasing Junior numbers, retention of Senior players and judicial appearances before ACA. All must be rectified if Papatoetoe is to remain a Premier club into the future. Our Premier side maintained its Premier status for another year-finishing sixth at season’s end. It is still a relatively young side developing nicely for a top 4 spot next season. Unfortunately Premier Coach Gareth Shaw has decided to stand down after two seasons in charge, citing increased pressures at work as the main reason. It has been a pleasure working with Gareth who has assured me that he will still take an active part in the Club in the future where possible. Good luck to Bhupinder Singh next season as he takes over the role of Senior Coach. Our Premier Reserves were unbeatable by season’s end, winning the ACA President’s Cup in the Two Day Championship. It is remarkable to think that only two years ago this side was in the Bottom Six Championship- winning the Major title so fast is a remarkable achievement. Congratulations must go to Vijay Soma and his team who held their nerve on the last day of the season to win the title. Justifiably some of these players will be challenging for Premier spots next season. As significant was the Senior B2’s domination of their grade throughout the season to win promotion. This was a major goal for the Club this season-for after finishing 2nd in this grade for the last three seasons we needed to reduce the gap between Reserves and the third side. Under Rajeev Rajagopal’s strong leadership the side won the trifecta of One Day, Two Day and Overall Championships. Hopefully this side will once again strive for promotion to Senior A next season. Senior B3 White under Kevin Henderson and B3 Red under Hetu Shah had contrasting season. Kevin’s side finished a creditable third in both competitions and should be proud of their accomplishments. Hetu’s side consisted mainly of Year 11 players and played some exciting close games but did suffer with unavailability in higher grades which often left them short-handed. Next year is your real chance to establish spots in higher teams and further develop your games. The 4 One day sides had mixed results. Our 2A side was banned for most of the second half of the season for two judicial complaints against them. Whilst I don’t want to go into the rights and wrongs of what occurred it is becoming an increasing trend in One Day Cricket in Auckland for problems to occur between sides in the One Day Grades. This needs to be sorted out quickly. 2B just missed on a Top 4 berth to finish 5th whilst 3B finished third, unluckily just missing out on a finals berth. Our Premier Women’s side was a brand new side with the entire side from last season retiring or leaving for other clubs. While this was unfortunate it didn’t deter Gary Wood. With help from Nickie Maro and Daniel Lynch, they started afresh with a very young side. It was a struggle for most of the season but through sheer perseverance they finally achieved a win in the penultimate game of the season. Give this side two or three years development and they will be challenging for titles. Congratulations to Ossie’s Under 18 side who won the ACA U18 One Day Blue Championship. This side has been together for a number of years and will develop important club players for the future.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 23 Now to our Junior teams who totalled only 7 last season, half of what they should be and were only a few seasons ago. In Year 6B Bairds Mainfreight once again won the Championship under the watchful eye of Fiona Macree, 6B Sodhi under Mark Rawnsley made the Top 6 and 6B Sodhi under Jana Gamage won the Minor Championship in the same grade. It was a pleasure to attend the ACA Prize Giving and hear Papatoetoe being read out so often. We all know finances are a major issue in South Auckland and our problem is how we attract more youngsters to the Club in spite of this. To all coaches, parents and supporters thank you for all your efforts this season. Without your help cricket games just wouldn’t take place. Cricket is a game that requires a great deal of parental help to run smoothly. Hopefully your support will continue next season. Special thanks to the newly formed Management Committee who have certainly made my role as Club Manager much easier to function smoothly. Times are tricky, funding is becoming much harder to source. This is where Gary Troup’s expertise is invaluable- for without it would be like looking for the proverbial ‘needle in a haystack’. Gary Wood is tireless in his Director of Coaching role, fostering cricket at all-and I mean all-schools in the local community. Finally thanks to Chairman Peter Boyd whose leadership and guidance has been pivotal these last three years. Thank you guys. New challenges await Papatoetoe Cricket in the 2015/6 season-hopefully we are up for the challenge. See everyone next season.

Simon Poole Club Manager

24 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 COACHING DIRECTOR’S DEVELOPENT REPORT 2014/2014

The 2014-15 season has seen another exceptionally busy time for the Club personnel involved in the coaching and development work that the Club continues to do. The two major issues that the Club confronted at the start of the season were; 1. How to field a competitive Premier Women’s team for the 2014-15 season? 2. The introduction of the Auckland Cricket Blitz Premier Women’s Cricket The 2014 off season saw the loss of all of the 2013-14 Premier Ladies squad either to retirement or to other clubs. The Four players who arrived to play for the Club from Samoa were: Matile Tuailagi, Marita Paulo, Pepe Iopu and Lagi Talea. These players would also assist by coaching in the extensive Schools and Junior Club Coaching program the Club undertook during the season. Specific objectives for the Club included: t 5PNBJOUBJOUIFTUBUVTPGUIF$MVCTUPQXPNFOTTJEFJOUIF"$"QSFNJFSHSBEF o This was achieved t 5PBTTJTUBOEGPTUFSUIFBEWBODFNFOUPGBOVNCFSPGQSPNJTJOHZPVOHFSQMBZFSTJO the group by providing the opportunity to play and train with current international players o This was achieved with limitations. t 5PIFMQUIFUFBNQFSGPSNUPBIJHITUBOEBSEPOBDPOTJTUFOUCBTJT o Progress was definitely made so was achieved t 5PQSPWJEFBEEJUJPOBMDPBDIFTUPUIF$MVCTDPBDIJOHQSPHSBN o This was achieved with limitations. t 5PBTTJTU4*$"o4BNPBO*OUFSOBUJPOBM$SJDLFU"TTPDJBUJPOXJUIUIFEFWFMPQNFOU of their women’s cricket playing program and assist with the overall strategy of game development t #ZBEEJOHUPUIFQPPMPGFYQFSJFODFEDPBDIFTJO4BNPB From Papatoetoe Cricket’s view this was a successful initiative as the significant objectives were achieved. From SICA perspective the outcomes may take a little longer to become apparent as the experiences will need to transfer to the squad where the individual players will need to train and perform consistently at a higher level. The other outcome to SICA will be in the benefits to the internal coaching initiatives as the four coaches should add real value to strengthen local programmes. The third area is that of personal growth for each player and that will be very much an assessment of whether the experiences have benefited each of the players in a positive way.

The BLITZ In 2015 Auckland Cricket introduced the Cricket Blitz after school competition. The concept was to provide stronger links into local schools through the provision of after-school competitions and coaching. This involved 130 plus teams from various schools across Auckland entering into a limited over competition based on the model The Blitz Girls Marita, Lagi, Matile and Pepe

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 25 Papatoetoe Club had been running for the previous three years. Of the teams that entered 30% are in the Papatoetoe catchment area or close by in the areas the Club’s school coaching program has been serving. The Blitz proved to be a huge soaker of Club resourcing man hours. This included servicing six grounds over three nights and up to seven games a night which really stretched the Club’s resources at times. Although ACA will contribute towards the servicing of those games it was hard to focus on much else during that time and the Club will need to have a good look to assess the real value to for next season.

Senior Coaching Over the off season a new initiative was initiated for the top end Premier and those viewed as potential players by the Premier Coach, Gareth Shaw. This saw two squad’s started early in June with the focus on individual, technical and tactical improvements. A top squad of 12 players was named with a view to take those players to a higher level with a goal of producing competent and competitive Premier level players who are capable of producing consistent performances that win matches for the top side and/or go on to achieve success at representative levels. This squad worked with Gareth Shaw, Neil Ronaldson, Bhupinder Singh and Phil Horne to raise the bar over the next season or so for that group. A highlight was the input from New Zealand legend, Martin Crowe, over a number of the sessions on batting and game plans. A second group of players was invited along to train with the same coaches and run a similar program. These were identified as aspiring potential Premier level players and were offered a chance to work hard over the winter to work towards raising the level and depth of the next tier down from Premiers. Although the Premiers started the season with high hopes various things didn’t go their way although they still managed to finish sixth with a young, relatively inexperienced side. However, a highlight of the season was both the Reserves and Senior B sides winning their respective grades which points to the success of that time well spent with the next tier of players. While the Club is highly unlikely to have the services of Crowe this winter the players will still have a number of highly experienced and qualified coaches to build on the work done over last season. The Club is very keen to have David Hooper back to coach and play in this environment given his good work last season around those teams.

Schools Coaching The schools program started up in term three yet again with a focus on four areas of coaching ; t "XBSFOFTTTFTTJPOT o These included class by class sessions, 10 Have A Go days, Counties Manukau Sport cluster days. t (FOFSJDTLJMMTFTTJPOT o These included PE classes in alignment with the school curriculum t 4RVBEDPBDIJOH o Schools who entered teams into the Club or ACA Blitz competition, cluster group field days o Saturday sides t $PNQFUJUJPOTVQQPSU o ACA Blitz o NZ Players Association Hooked on Cricket

26 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 o ACA girls Quik Hit o Cluster field days o Intra school lunchtime competition David Hooper, our English coach delivered the majority of these sessions with the assistance of the four Samoan players that were down in New Zealand to play in the Premier Ladies side. The main coaching focuses for the Club sides were their practices each week. Most of these sides now have a qualified coach and they were assisted by Dave, Simon, Bhupinder and Jack Shimmin in running the many practice sessions involved. Sam Robinson, Jack and the Samoan girls also run an interactive session each Friday evening for the midgets. During the season eleven aspiring coaches including the four Samoan women players attended a NZ Cricket ‘Foundation’ coach course run by the Garry Wood at the Club. A further 12 teachers attended an in-service course at Rongomai School. One target agreed to with Auckland Cricket in the 2013-14 season review was for the Club to work towards a memorandum of understanding with local secondary schools. ACA see that as a critical area in keeping that critical age group in contact with the sport. At the moment one MOU has been signed off with Sancta Maria, one is very close with Papatoetoe High School and three are in progress with De La Salle, Mission Heights and Ormiston College. These involve providing coaching support to school team or in school programmes ( PE, Options etc.), access to competitions, and access to Saturday club teams as well as preferred access to the Indoor Centre in exchange for the school fostering and promoting cricket as a sport in the school and Papatoetoe Cricket Club as the preferred Club to play for. None of these sides are traditional secondary school 1A sides, but the opportunity is to foster cricket in those schools, and get some of those boys playing for the Club through their school years. One very good example is that of club President, entering a team from De la Salle into the Club’s Wednesday afternoon competition three years ago, then successfully getting an under 15 boys club team up and going from those boys and this year under the guidance of parent and staff member, Ulu Hakeagatoa, entering a First XI in the College Sport school competition for the first time in many years. Bairds Mainfreight Primary School BMPS was once again a major user of our coaching resource. However the investment in the school and the support the Club gets from Headmaster, Alan Lythe, Deputy Principal, Fiona McAree-Ngaau and parent Martin Kaipo ensure that this model is still both a work in progress and an exemplar for what is possible if committed staff are in a school and get Club support even in areas where other codes are more often the sport of choice. In the season of 2014-15 Bairds Mainfreight Primary School students received over 200 hours of coaching throughout the school from the Club. This did not include the ACA run program that also ran in the school for the year 6 students. During term One the entire junior and middle school had a coaching session each Friday for the whole term. On the park during the season the Saturday side were undefeated in their grade and won their section in the ACA Saturday morning competition for the second year running. The school won both the boys and girls competitions at the Otara cluster field day to both progress to the ACA regional finals. By running this program essentially the Club has a whole school supporting a team. The level of participation is across the whole school from year 1 student’s right through to the school leavers in year six. This is also effectively the recruitment and succession plan for that team. This is a significant exemplar of the work the Club is doing in South Auckland schools where Cricket is not a sport of choice. Garry Wood Coach and Development Manager Papatoetoe Cricket Club

28 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 PREMIER COACHES REPORT

The 2014/2015 season for the Papatoetoe Premier side was one of mixed fortunes but most crucially saw us retain our top 8 club status after a lot of hard work. Going into the season the team had high aspirations of competing for some silverware across all the three competitions. The players had a wonderful preseason training programme which kicked off in June with many of the team wanting to keep the momentum going after finishing the previous season very well. We were extremely fortunate to have the services of Martin Crowe to help our batting group. The players got enormous benefit from his sessions and it is a tribute to the club and their willingness to invest in our players that they gained Martin’s expertise. In light of Martin’s recent health issues it was a huge privilege that he gave us his time and we couldn’t be more grateful. The preseason finished with a fantastic trip to Waiheke Island to play a inter squad trial and a good time was had by all. I would like to thank Paul O’Brien who did a wonderful job organising the trip. Unfortunately the season did not start well, with the side taking a month to register our first win in the Jeff Crowe Cup against Eden Roskill. This was primarily a result of the team failing to put decent totals on the board for the bowlers to defend. Rain also unfortunately hurt us in 2 games where we had to share the points after being in a strong position. As a result we did not progress to the finals stage of the One day competition. The side started the 20/20 competition strongly with a win against Ellerslie. After a further two wash outs we progressed to the major championship quarter final where we were beaten by Cornwall. The side started very well in the Hedley Howarth two day competition. A dramatic opening game against Takapuna saw the two sides tie on first innings. Batting second we managed to tie the scores 8 wickets down thanks to a rear guard action led by Luke Istead. However, from this position Takapuna managed to claim the last two wickets without a further run being scored to share the first innings points. Rather than dwelling on what could have been, the team set to work on bowling Takapuna out cheaply a second time and managed to chase down the runs 7 down late in the day. It was a terrific turnaround to win outright and these points were to prove vital later in the season. Again poor performances with the bat saw us drop the next two games before disposing of Birkenhead after Navdeep Aujla claimed 11 wickets to dismiss them cheaply. A strong team batting performance led by Steve Money’s 80 saw us pass Birkenhead’s total and gain crucial first innings points. Further losses followed over the next few weeks which resulted in the side missing the top 4 split and were forced to fight relegation in the last few months of the year. However, a strong performance with the bat against Suburbs where the side scored 321, our highest score of the year, showed that we were moving in the right direction with our batting. We were unable to pick up wins in the first two playoff games which forced us into a show down with our local rivals Howick Pakuranga in a virtual relegation match. Under immense pressure the side on the back of a superb individual performance by player of the year Luke Istead were able to rise to the occasion scoring an imposing 399/9 d. It was a wonderful day with the bat and saw Luke Istead score his first premier century. Luke then led the team to victory taking a 5 wicket haul to kill of Howick chances and see them relegated to the minor division next season. Despite it being a tough year on the field it was a great way to finish the season and the side is in a good position to build on this next year knowing that we have retained our top 8 status.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 29 There were some wonderful individual achievements this season. Luke Istead was the stand out player with both bat and ball and cemented himself as one of the top young players in Auckland club cricket. He swept all the awards at the Papatoetoe prize giving!! Nav Aujla continued to perform well with the ball and is pushing for higher honours. It was also great to see Ollie Pringle selected for the Auckland A side which won the national tournament. I would like to thank a few people for their help this year. Firstly Bhupinder Singh who led the side well on and off the field. John Lee again did a great job as manager; the boys certainly love having him around, and Brett Patterson who gave up his time to score. Again Vijay Soma and Neil Ronaldson played a huge part in helping me out with trainings and coaching. We have some great young talent within the club which was evident with both the Premier Reserves and Thirds winning their respective competitions. This puts the club in a great position and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this team.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 31 2014/15 PREMIER WOMEN SQUAD The lead up to the season saw the loss of all of the 2013-14 Premier Ladies squad either to retirement or other clubs. In an effort to maintain Premier status and to provide a pathway for the good young players emerging from the Club’s existing U15 grade Papatoetoe Cricket entered into an agreement with Samoa International Cricket in mid-2014 for SICA to send four members of the National Women’s team who were domiciled in Apia down to Auckland to play in the Premier Women’s team for the summer of 2014-15. The rest of the squad were a mixture of the existing Club Te Ulu ladies First Grade team and the under 15 squad from the previous season. This meant the team was always going to struggle at this level due to the inexperience of the players but it was hoped that it would be a valuable learning curve for the future. Dan Lynch coached the side until Christmas when he accepted a job offer in Melbourne and made an outstanding contribution to the squad with his patience and keenness for them to improve. After Christmas the coaching duties were shared around between Garry Wood, Paana Purotu and Apira Ravarua.

The team at Keith Hay Park The team was always faced with difficult circumstances as all the other sides had three to four very good players and so each match was full of tough situations. Another issue was the Cricket World up which necessitated playing most of the games after Christmas on Sundays. The players coped with these adverse circumstances really well and ended up winning two games over the season including the last 50 over game against Eden Roskill. This match included the outstanding individual performance of the season from Tetiare Mataora of 5 wickets for 27 runs against Eden Roskill. Several key measures were met that meant the season was a success despite the win/loss record. They included; t "GVMMUFBNFBDIQMBZJOHEBZ t 5XPXJOTPWFSUIFTFBTPO t 'VMMUVSOPVUTBUQSBDUJDFT t /PUCFJOHCPXMFEPVUGPSUIFMPXFTUUPUBMPGUIFTFBTPO5IBUVOFOWJBCMF record went to Auckland University with its two NZ players plus several rep players who only managed an innings total of 26. t 5IFEFWFMPQNFOUPGUIFZPVOHFSQMBZFSTJODMVEJOH5FUJBSF.BUBPSB ,PJUBJ Mataora, Atina Ravarua and Maalu Ravarua

32 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 All Rounder of the Year: Tetiare Mataora, an outstanding prospect, at Keith Hay Park

All the Samoan players contributed on the field well for most of the time at some stage or another. In the absence of any established leadership options Marita Paulo was appointed captain and led the side well displaying character and pride and was also equal top wicket- taker. All proved to be very capable fielders with Matile Tualagi and Lagi Talea both being superb fielders and Lagi probably having the strongest arm in the side, so day in day out we were one of the better fielding teams although there were times when the concentration levels of some of the younger members of the team drifted. Matile was the top run-scorer for all games with 223 runs and equal top wicket taker with 19 wickets for the season. One notable highlight was the selection of two regular members of the team for the Cook Island team to go to the South Pacific Games in PNG in July, well done to Tito Ine and Mirioni Rivaia. Once again thanks to Nickie Maro for her boundless enthusiasm and tireless support.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 33 PAPATOETOE MEN’S PREMIER RESERVE 2014/15 SEASON

As I sit here and pen this end of season report for the Papatoetoe CC Reserves, I still can’t quite believe we are 2 day champions. Championship winning teams statistically have 3 or 4 batsmen scoring 600+ runs or 2-3 bowlers taking 40+ wickets, this season we had no individual stand outs, which suggests winning the 2 day championship was all the more a fantastic effort from a squad of players who fought for wins in mostly tough conditions over the course of the season. If we look back, grinding out 1st innings wins on tough wickets at the top end of the season set the Reserves up for a charge at the title at the back end. We had a barnstorming 6 weeks which resulted in us picking up the 2 day title on the last day of the season. For me, the most pleasing aspect of the season is that even though we have picked up a title, many of the squad involved with the Reserves have still not fulfilled the promise and potential we as a coaching group can see. Once you all start to understand your games and further more mature with this season’s experiences, you will all start to reach new levels and push for higher honours. The next couple of years could well be very exciting times for our great club and for me that’s even more exciting than winning a 2 day title. A few highlights this season should be mentioned. Youngster Christie O’Brien notched up his first senior men’s grade hundred. Christie is amongst a group of youngsters still at school or just out of, who are pushing the more senior men at the club. Jamie Hayes also shared in the spoils with a hundred with Christie at Devonport, both have bright futures and I hope to see more scores from both of them next season. Nathan Hattingh also looks to have finally worked out how to bat long periods of time, he finished the season well for us and himself, with a couple of big scores, one being a maiden Senior men’s hundred. Nathan has still

34 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 much potential to deliver on, he has a great work ethic and is now starting to develop the temperament to play men’s cricket. On the bowling side, the on-going development of Sam Saini has been great to see, 37 wickets for Sam is great return for the season and his 6 for 30 at Takapuna was a season changing performance for the Reserves. I also need to mention the contributions when we fortunate enough to be graced with the presence of Abhishek Patel and Abdullah Syed- they were a level above our opponents, and the likes of Sam Saini ,Sam Robinson and Kieran O’Brien learnt from them over the course of the season. Kieran O’Brien needs to be mentioned- his work ethic and competitive streak was great for the team. His hard work was rewarded with a Premier call up which is what he wanted all season. I could go on, but need to keep this relatively short- the last part of end of season reports always ends with the “thanks you’s” for all those who contributed to the team over the season. I have read many end of season reports and for me the “thank you’s” and the “recognition” is what I value the most, so here it goes… First and foremost, Gareth Shaw’s contribution, input, experience, wisdom, plans, and structure has set this club on the right footing for many years to come. It he has given his heart and soul to developing 20-25 players all capable of playing Premier cricket. Gareth over the last 4 years playing and coaching has worked terribly hard on nurturing the current crop of youngsters and he leaves his post I think slightly too early as the real fruits of his hard work will be upon this club very shortly. Gareth, I am sure I speak on behalf of the whole squad, you will be missed, but the legacy you leave will see this playing group through to greater heights over the next few years. Gareth Shaw- a true Papatoetoe Legend. Special thanks from me also must go to Paul O’Brien and Brendan Austin. These two gentlemen were a great help in setting up trainings and running the front of house duties for me. Not an easy job with our crop of youngsters with their constant demands and special attention requirements- for this, I am indebted to you both. I must also pay thanks and congratulate Rajeev, Captain of the newly promoted 3rd team. Rajeev has developed the next level of players for the Reserves with a handful of them playing for us this season. He leads by example and sets very high standards for his young chargers. Well done this season Rajeev, look forward to working with you next season and hopefully you taking the thirds to the next level. To end with, I must add, to all those involved this season with the Reserves, it has been an honour and a pleasure to pull on the red cap with you all. Winning a title was unexpected, but let’s take it and build on this for next season. Titles are far few and between for some, so winning one for the Papatoetoe CC must be treasured. See you all at pre-season, don’t stop working hard and you will reap the rewards in 2015/16.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 37 PAPATOETOE B2 REPORT

It has been a very successful season for the B2 squad. We had set targets to achieve for the team before the start of the season - to win both the one day and two day titles. We managed to win both titles emphatically, thereby winning the overall championship and promotion to the B1 grade. The championship win was possible because of the sustained hard work of the players who stayed positive and hungry for success till the very last over of the season. We won every game this season except for one 1st inning loss against the second placed Suburbs but I would blame the very many dubious umpiring decisions that went against us for that loss. There have been numerous high quality individual performances. David Hooper was outstanding with both bat and ball while he was with us in the first half of the season, and he was excellent in the field too. Gagan had yet another successful year and played a crucial all round role in the success of our team. Pratik Lawande had a fantastic second half of the season with the ball. Sahildeep was unlucky not to get more favourable conditions most of the time- but whenever he bowled on grass-wickets he was successful. Prabhash also had success with bat and ball. Ketan scored two fifties in six innings towards the end of the season which is commendable. Akshay and Jith showcased class and good batting technique on a few occasions, Avnit turned the ball the most and Sam got snatched away by the Premier Reserves not long after the season started. Pratik Patel joined us late in the season but jelled well in the team and had a good knock against Kumeu. Paramveer, Aue and Balkar played a few games for us this season and are the next rung of talented players with potential and I am sure they will play a big part for the team next season. Thomas Parima played the innings of the season with a

38 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 century against Suburbs. I had a good season with the bat and ball, and good players in the side meant that my job as a captain was much easier. We knew that we had the best players in the grade as it has been the case for the last 2-3 years but the problem has been the inexperience and lack of self-belief and consistency as a team. This championship win will be a huge boost to their confidence and vast majority of our players are very young who can only get better from here. There is of course plenty of room for improvement. Our fielding/catching and running between the wickets have been below par and we are also conceding too many extra runs. Our batsmen also need to stay in the crease longer, play with a positive frame of mind and be aiming for big individual scores. We will have to address these issues to progress to a higher level of cricket. I acknowledge the support received from Simon, Garry, Kevin, Vijay and Paul.

Thank you everyone. Rajeev Rajagopal B2 Captain

40 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 PAPATOETOE B3 White

This season saw us promoted into B3, a newly established grade owing to better numbers across the two day spread. With most of our key players being retained we were able to finish third in both sections of the championship. This is the best overall return for this side in its seven year history. In the one day championship we won four from seven, with one washout. Unfortunately we saved our slip-up performances for the two sides who finished higher. Along the way our batting in particular was a standout feature. Highlights were a tense one wicket win over the second Suburbs side and a spectacular turnaround against Varsity where Ramandeep Kahlon and Tejinder Singh put on a 178 run stand after a shaky start – a game we went on to win comfortably. In the two dayers, we experienced similar frustrations to last season. Time and bad weather were a factor in us registering only one outright win from seven, despite being in strong positions in every round. In fact we registered the most wins by any side despite finishing third. The comp started off with a disappointment, in seeing our third innings declaration mowed down by Suburbs’ first team. That was to be our only loss, but it took a further three rounds to register our best result against Birkenhead – a game highlighted by Jagroop Baath’s 10 wicket haul. We also beat leading side Grafton in a reduced one innings match which was satisfying after being mauled by them earlier in the summer. Ultimately we found ourselves unable to challenge at the business end as the winners skipped clear, but third was a fair reflection on our competitiveness. Thanks again for the hard work and loyalty of our guys this season. Both the youth and experience in the side is starting to work well together. I think we are well positioned to push for a title next season.

44 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 PAPATOETOE 3B ALLSTARS

This year saw us welcome a few new players on a full time basis and also welcome back a few from previous seasons who were available to play more games during 2014/15. It was with pleasure that we welcomed Matthew Down (Matt) to the side this year after many years playing for Eden Roskill. We were also lucky enough to have Anthony Layzell (Lazy) play a full season for us and it was good to see him contribute most weekends with either the bat or ball. We even managed to get Ifti to play more than his customary one game a season and take a number of stunning catches in the outfield as a result of some regular game time. This year followed much the same pattern as last year with us finishing the Round Robin top of the table after only losing a handful of games. We then lost our first playoff game to Parnell after having them 90 for 5 at drinks as they posted 200+ to see us lose by 60 odd runs. In our second playoff game which was played in light rain most of the day we battered first and racked up 240+ with Massive getting his highest score of the season (92), We then bowled out Waitakere in the final over for a win by 6 wickets just in time before the rain got heavier. So our season came down to our final game against Suburbs at home, We battered first and watched as Apples took Suburbs apart to get us through to 230+ off our 40 overs and end up 119*. After getting an early wicket we then had to watch as there No’s 2&3 put on a hundred run partnership to see them cursing at drinks needing 33 runs off 20 overs with 9 wickets in hand, Up stepped Lazy who proceeded to pick up his best figures of the season with the ball (4 for 8) to see Suburbs start to get a bit nervous as they lost 6 wickets for 10 runs, Sadly out fight back wasn’t to be and Suburbs ended up getting home with 3 overs to spare and 2 wickets in the shed and a place in the final. As is the custom with the 3B All Stars we decided to have a champagne breakfast for the playoff game and having never lost a game after a champagne breakfast I am proud to say that this is one record that we have kept intact!!! To finish off I would just like to mention a few highlights for the season, First Matt picking up 31 wickets in his first season for both the 3B’s and the Club, Darron (D) finishing the season with 44 wickets. Secondly we had 4 100’s scored this year, 2 x Apples (107 & 119*) and the other 2 100’s were first’s at senior level for both Gagey (105) & Lazy (104*) Congratulations to you both on managing to get across the line. Massive I’m sure your time will come next season after the past 2 years of getting so close!!! On a sad note we lost Jamie (Jigger) towards the end of the season with a serious knee injury, after he had to borrow Harry’s boots for a game on grass (Thanks Harry) the prognosis is that we will hopefully see Jigger back in the second half of next season, although maybe as a batsman initially. Thank you all again for your support during the 2014/15 season, it has been a thoroughly enjoyable one and I hope to see you all again next year where we can hopefully go one better and get across the line.

Coaches: Paana Purotu and Apera Taupa Ravarua Keeper’s: Tea Williams, Kapa Marukore & Rhonda Thompson It was challenging at the start of the season for me, to try and accommodate players for the Emerging Hearts and the Premier Teams, working with Garry Wood. The Emerging Hearts Team was difficult to get 11 players for every Saturday, because they have other commitments to attend to, and it falls back on me to look for subscriptions. The girls and ladies enjoyed the season; they were only disappointed when games changed to Sundays because of the World Cup. Good news is that I have met with the Mangere Pukapuka Ladies Manager, Captain and some of their senior players. They’re very happy to join and play together with us for 2015/16 season. Looking forward to working with them for 2015/16 season. Nickie Maro

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 53 PAPATOETOE YEAR 9/10 PREMIER

Another tough and challenging season playing the best Year 9/10 teams in Auckland. We started with the 20/20’s. It was very competitive as the teams we played were tough, but we knew that when we started the season. Games were very close at this level, and as a coach I was very proud of how our boys played as a team and the way they supported, encouraged and respected each other on and off the field. Most of the team were strangers in the beginning, but as the season went on, they became good friends, just boys wanting to play cricket. The only disappointment was that I hardly got to meet any parents, or see any of them at any games. Our team captain Gurjap Singh, always led by example with both batting and bowling. The team continued to be competitive every game. Our fielding was always improving but our batting often let the team down. Our boys just needed to stay out there and bat their overs instead of throwing their wickets away. During the Christmas break, we had two boys, Sean Hakeagatoa and Osika Kaufononga selected to play in the Year 9 Christmas District Tournament Team. The composite team were called the Barbarians, and were made up from boys from Papatoetoe, Howick-Pakuranga and Suburbs. This team were only put together in the last week, with just two training sessions before the actual tournament. They managed to beat and upset some top teams like North Harbour and placed fourth out of eight teams at the end of the tournament. Well done boys. The second half of the season, the boys improved further. They played three two-day games, won two and lost one. We ended up playing Cornwall in the finals and once again, didn’t score enough runs, leaving us with second place. I would like to make a special mention about Avinder Gill picking up a six-wicket bag against Suburbs in the two-day game. I would also like to thank our senior boys, Gurjap, Avinder, Paramjot, Gursharn, Jaskeerat, Sukjap,

54 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 Sean and Osika for being great ambassadors of the game in the way they represented the club week after week. To finish off, I just want to encourage these boys to keep on playing cricket at any level, and hope to see some of them in the Premier team or maybe even in the NZ side one day. They all have individual talents and can keep on improving. Thanks for a wonderful season, Ulu Hakeagatoa

56 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 PAPATOETOE YEAR 8 PREMIER REPORT

Ronnie: Ronnie is a medium pace swing bowler and a middle order batsman with the ability to bowl some outstanding deliveries but this season he’s lacked the line and length in club level. At district level he bowled a much better line and length, impressing many people when he bowled 3 maidens in a row. He’s a hard-working, fit young cricketer that deserves to grow with his game, taking 6 wickets at club level and scoring 130 runs. Upinder: Upinder is a slow-medium line and length bowler that took 10 wickets this season with the ability to swing the ball in. He has deceptive pace, a great in-swingers and very accurate when he’s at his best. He missed a few after Christmas games due to him being away but his contribution in the field and with the ball made up for it as he is one of our best out- fielders. He’s a mature and sensible cricketer that plays the game with great spirit.

Harmeet: Harmeet is a great young spin bowling talent we picked up this year from the lower age group. He has the ability to bat down the order and keep his wicket while he is the best spin bowler in the team picking up 17 wickets. He’s got good variation as a spinner, he can bowl a very good quicker delivery that has a hint of swing in it too. He’s contributed a huge amount to the team with his all round performances as he is an exceptional fielder. Sunveer: Sunny is an exceptional cricketer that can come in the middle order and destroy the bowling and can be relied upon to bowl a few handy out-swingers. He joined 8Prem Best Bowler Harmeet Singh the club this season and moulded into the group really well. He’s got the ability to make the ball fly off his bat no matter where on the bat he’s hitting. He can bowl a few great out-swingers when it’s his day. He’s got potential that can be harnessed after a bit of experience with the game. Otherwise Sunny is a great addition to the team we always enjoy having him around. Sukhdev: Sukhdev is also a new player with good experience from the Counties Manukau club. He’s an opening batsman and wicketkeeper who can be extremely brutal at times when he wants to. He’s a great boundary hitter that gave us great starts on a number of occasions and can play really big innings. He is an outstanding wicketkeeper when he’s fit and well, giving 100 % effort through his athleticism. He is another great addition to the team that we value greatly. Abhay: Abhay’s season went well this year without really excelling with the bat- but a few good scores were put up by him whilst he was going through a rough patch of ducks. His keeping improved from last year and he’s been well rested as keeper because of how Sukhdev also helps 8Prem Best Keeper out with the gloves. He’s been a good player this year but Sukdev Singh Sukh he just needs to improve on a few little things. Overall for him it was a learning curve which will make him a better player this following season. Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 57 Dhir: Dhir is another spinner in our bowling line-up who has contributed well. He bowls the ball reasonably quicker than most spinners, giving the batsman less time to react to him. He played a few good knocks down the order which saw him open in a game against Auckland University. Taking 10 wickets Dhir was our 3rd leading wicket taker. He showed great talent this year with bat and ball and should be proud of what he’s achieved whilst looking to strive for more. Sandy: Sandy is a left arm medium pace bowler who showed in trainings that he can hit the ball extremely hard. He has the ability to bowl a few crazy deliveries that surprise everyone on the field- and at trainings. He’s shown that he’s got a great talent but sadly couldn’t showcase his full potential ion the field. Sandy was our 4th leading wicket taker this season. He is extremely hard-working, and is always looking to train to be better. He might have not gotten the results that he wanted this season but he can definitely give us something special in the coming seasons. Aryan: Aryan is a spin bowler that has taken wickets but not with his best balls . With only 2 wickets and 50 runs he didn’t showcase his true ability this season. We expect him to give us a greater performance this next season if he does decide to continue. Harvir: Harvir has been an absolute rock for his team this season, especially when he got into form he was unstoppable, scoring 2 centuries and taking 4 wickets. His contribution was invaluable. He scored a mammoth total of 433 runs this season, rotating up and down the batting order, showing that runs can be scored by batting from anywhere in the order. His performances this year exceeded his performances from previous seasons-not necessarily with the ball but definitely with the bat. He is calm, cool and collected and continues to amaze everyone Also the co-captain. Ross: Ross was challenged this year due to his age, being the youngest wasn’t easy but he showed some good fight, scoring 140 runs and taking an outstanding 7 catches. The highlight for his season must have been when he hit a six at 8Prem Best Batsmen the end of a Papatoetoe VS Howick Pakuranga 2 day match Harvir Singh Birl to lessen their point total. A valuable player and in spite of his age Ross has done well. Ritap: Ritap’s performance was extraordinary as he was the leading run scorer for this group and MVP for his tournament. He scored an astounding 475 runs whilst taking 12 wickets, being the second leading wicket taker behind Harmeet. His performances pre-Christmas was fantastic as he scored 3 50’s and 1 century in the 50 over format. Sadly he was an in and out player for his club in the second half of the season as he played for his Auckland Grammar Colts team. He was able to attend a few games after his colt’s matches but this would only show a bit of his talent as games would be nearing the end. Ritap, Sukhdev,Harmeet and Harvir were the key players for success in this Papatoetoe side showcasing their maturity and talent this season.

58 Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 Team comparison from last year The team we had this year was amazing, they showed much more fight and skill than in previous years. With experienced players to lead the way this team created chances for victory and took them winning many more games than the previous years. The team matured well and became more aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Overall the team that was produced this year was an outstanding one in comparison to last year’s providing great entertainment for the parents and coaches. As a coach and a father I am very impressed and proud of my boys effort and commitment to cricket- they have done me proud. I am very proud of Ritapraj Gill and Preetpal Singh for their selection into Year 8 Manukau District Team. Harmeet Singh and Tanin Khurana selection for the Year 7 Team. I hope next season we will have more boys fighting to be chosen for Manukau Districts.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 59 PAPATOETOE 7A

Year 7 A team showed tremendous improvement in their performance in the season that has just gone by. It was a wonderful year for everybody training, playing as well as watching the world cup matches. This year the team was not run by one coach but by the collective effort of Onkar Singh, Patwinder Matharu and myself. Over all the team won 50% of matches played. Each and every player has shown improvement with Abhijeet emerging as a reliable opening batsman. He was awarded the best batsman of the season and awarded the ‘Burnside Cup’ for being the most outstanding junior player. Harjot’s overall performance with bat, ball and fielding cannot be ignored. He too performed very well. Samirs spin bowling always comes handy to the team and he batted well too. Tehann has always brought his postitive attitude and sportsmanship spirit in the team. Balwinder ( Bobby) took 19 wickets in the season and was awarded the best bowler. Pahul

being the youngest member of the team did very well, he has the potential to be a good batsman in the future. Veron did a wonderful job of being the wicket keeper of the team without whom we wouldn’t have been able to perfom that well. Adrian’s batting has always been a pleasure to watch. Rest of the team: Shail, Guryash, Jasdeep, Ayush and Param have also contributed positively in the matches. As we cannot ignore the contribution of the club management we would like to thank Simon Poole, Garry Woods and Bhupinder Singh for their support and guidance. Team is not run by one person but its by the co-operation and support of the families. We would like to thank the family support throughout the season. The coming season is full of high expectations and brilliant performances. The players need to work on their fitness and fielding. We would like to wish them all the best for the coming season.

Papatoetoe Cricket Annual Report 2014 - 2015 61 PAPATOETOE Bairds Mainfreight Year 6

The Papatoetoe/BMPS team couldn’t wait for the 2014/15 season to begin. We were fortunate to have 5 players who had played last season-half a team already! We ended up with 18 players- including 4 girls. We decided to go with this, as usually a few players drop out over the season-not this year. We had an average of 15 children turning up to every game. Part of the success was the children’s love for cricket, and the ability to train at school. The other thing that made it work was having the same 4 adults turning up each week to drive the children to their games. The team had training at school every Thursday afternoon, and then on Fridays at Papatoetoe Sports Centre. This allowed the new recruits to get some much needed coaching. We also trained straight through the summer-no break for us! As was the case last year, it was apparent that the team were going to have a great season- it had to be, it was Cricket World Cup Year. Opposition teams commented on the BMPS/ Papatoetoe skill level as well as their great sportsmanship. These qualities, the training and some natural talent all meant great wins for the ‘Mighty Ducks.’ It was hard leaving 5 players out each week, as it meant batting pairs changed regularly, and of course it meant that these eager players didn’t get to play. They still turned up every week! By Christmas time the team were unbeaten-due mainly to the team’s great fielding skills. We also had a few players who quickly worked out how to get a good 4 and 6! Training over the holidays worked in the team’s favour, as we started back after Christmas strong, and with a determined attitude to win the championship. We were back to zero points, so we couldn’t take this for granted. The second half of the season was great to watch. The game was getting faster, the skills were getting better every week, and the team were working well together. The results were there in the score book-fewer wides and more runs. Some weeks the team won by almost 100 runs. The team enjoyed the win, and were always humble and respectful to the opposition. Our team’s biggest challenge has been a lack of parental support. Again, the team has been fortunate to have Martin Kaipo as coach, umpire and taxi driver. We also had Metua, Jane and Engi who have been amazing taxi drivers for the team. Their help and support has been incredible! What a season-6B champions for the second year! Looking ahead: To have a cricket ‘club’ during winter to keep the players involved in the game, and to begin training with potential new players. An on-going goal is to get more parents involved-helping with transport, scoring, umpiring, etc, so that the team is sustainable when the adult helpers move on when their children leave the BMPS/Papatoetoe team. To work with the Yr 7 students to keep them involved in cricket, and to help them be part of a Yr7 team at Papatoetoe for the 2015/16 season. Fiona McAree
