4 Academy Awards: Notes

Players may be nominated for representative cricket in Essex or Cambridgeshire if they are considered ready to perform at such a level. However, playing at this level relies on commitment as well as talent. If you feel you would like to be considered or if you feel you or your parents cannot make this commitment, please speak to your manager.

Highest batting average min. 5 innings/Lowest min. 10 overs. Because young players play so few matches we don’t insist on 5 ‘completed’ innings before they qualify with an average. This is not the case in senior cricket. Please note that a more accurate picture of performance can be gained the more overs bowled or the more innings batted. A low minimum has been chosen to involve as many players as possible in the statistics. Overall batting and bowling awards are made by managers in consultation with coaches and others. There are no definitive criteria.

Club caps awarded to any established Academy player taking 5 in one match (including 5 stumpings and/or catches by a keeper), scoring a century, playing at County level or being a first choice selection for the senior SWCC teams or village teams with whom SWCC have a formal arrangement. From 2009 Club caps will be awarded to girls for taking 3 wicket/catches, scoring 50 in a match and for County or adult selection.

Players’ Player may be awarded on the basis of Player of the Match nominations over the course of a season or a vote amongst other squad members.

Academy records have been compiled since 2003. There may well be superior performances before that – just let us know.

The Alfred Adams Batting Award. Alfred Adams scored 279 by batting all day against Bishop’s Stortford for SWCC on the Common on 11 July 1837. At the time it was the highest recorded individual score in the country. Fiona Harris was the first woman to play competitively for SWCC in 2002. She still plays for SWCC when she can. John Smith first played for SWCC in 1946 and retired in 1963 at the age of 35. He is the tallest of the team in many of the clubhouse photos of the 1950s and 60s. John passed away in 20??

Josh Bysouth was an u13 Academy player when he died in a car accident with his Grandfather in 2012

Academician of the Year is awarded to the academy player who has made the strongest commitment to his or her own development and to the work of the Academy and Club. It may be related to the “Clubman of the Year” award for each age group.

Jack Petchey Awards were given for outstanding personal achievement 2006-2015. The club withdrew from the scheme in 2015 – it did not recognise youngsters under the age of 11 and the criteria for awards became unduly restrictive. It was replaced by the SWCC Outstanding Achiever Scheme sponsored by???????

We currently do not issue individual medals or trophies, preferring to issue certificates. This maximises involvement and keeps costs low. However, sponsors for individual trophies shown on the previous page are always welcome. WEDCB = West Essex District Cricket Board CYCA = Cambridgeshire Youth Cricket Association. 5 Academy Awards 2005-2015

Squad 2015 under 16

Manager Alec Turner Coach Elliott Wilson / Matt Gouldstone Michael Turner Vice Captain Jack Ormsby Review of season: We always knew it would be hard to emulate the success of the 2015 squad but inspired by the success of the previous year, and the talent of the U16/15/14 squad, we knew we had as good a chance as any. The season got off to a bad start with the 1st match conceding 38 extra runs! I think it is fair to say we played below par and the team struggled to put in the crucial performances when needed, dropping catches at crucial times and not scoring enough runs to put the opposition under pressure. However there were some individual good performances with some great bowling by seamers and spinners alike.

In what was one of the best bowling and fielding displays I have witnessed in a long time from any level of cricket at the AAPF and has to be the magic moment of the season! The bowlers; Jake Thompson, Alexander Thomas, Ryan Deamer and Jack Ormsby all bowled absolutely brilliantly, restricting the opposition to 54.in 20 overs. Squad 2015 under 15

Manager Paul Gadd Coach Matt Gouldstone Joe Barrs Captains Rotated Review of season We played in the CYCA and WEDCB U15 leagues. The WEDCB league was hampered by other teams cancelling games and bad weather so in the end we could only play 3 games; we ended up second in the league, having won all 3 games and having comprehensively beaten Harlow, who came top thanks to playing most of their games. The CYCA league was a very competitive league and we managed to get all but one game in, only losing to Granta, and then only by one run in one of the matches, and finished level on points with Granta but second because of the results of our games with them; the highlight was beating a strong Cambridge St Giles team by 6 wickets with more than 4 overs to go

Squad 2015 Senior Girls (under 15) girls can play 2 years above the age group so played in an under 13 league

Manager Jo Borgeson Coach Niraj Odedra,Jo Borgeson Captain Evie Borgeson Vice Captain Victoria Hill Review of season: The under 15 girls had a disappointing season, only managing to play three games due to both weather and unavailability of players. The games which were played were as always enjoyable to watch. The girl’s batting has really improved this year with everyone hitting boundaries and running the important singles. Their fielding is always good, taking catches where possible and making several run outs with accurate throwing. Notable performances came from Charlotte Livermores' consistent batting and Millie Sparrows' fielding. Several of the squad stepped up to play in an Essex based under 21 tournament where they contributed to a convincing win against Hutton and a defeat against an extremely strong Harold Wood Team.Special thanks to our coach Niraj, and the SWCHS year 10 rounders team. Hopefully next year we can continue to see improvements and get more match practice.

Manager Kevin Wendelken Coach Kevin Duers Captains S. Matthews / A Whitehead ( Alternate matches ) Review of season: This season, with a very small squad (not in stature!), we managed to improve with nearly every game. After a slow start in the U15’s WEDCB Cup vs a depleted Epping side, the players produced some good performances and really started to “gel” as a squad and play together as a team. Literally, with a little more luck, we could have easily won 7 of our 8 matches and we culminated with two well-deserved wins in the last two fixtures of the season. Well done to the squad, with a special mention to Adam Whitehead for his season’s performances!!

Managers Steve Temblett, Duncan Pluck, Coach Steve Oakey Tom Rodda, Simon Cooke Captain Louis Temblett Vice captains Harry Cooke/Bertie Scott/Adam Oakey Review of season : A successful season across the board – CYCA U13D League champions, WE U13A League Champions; and Peter Coe Cup Group 2 winners and Quarter-finalists (a first for SWCC!) – the U13s also reaches the Semi-finals of both WE & CYCA Cup competitions. The U13s were only beaten once in all CYCA & WE league matches and were unbeaten in the Peter Coe Cup group matches. All players in the 26 person squad played at in at least one match through the season, and all who played showed great teamwork, commitment and spirit. Captain On rotation Vice captain On rotation Review of Season: This year the we played in two leagues, the CYCA and Bardfield Village League. We have had a hugely successful season coming second in the CYCA league, only losing three out of twelve matches and tied one. In the Bardfield Village League we played 8 matches and only lost one. We still have the final to play in this league for the Hugh Craig Cup which will take place on the 13th September. We had a large squad of 25 players who came regularly to training of which 22 played matches, 3 chose not to play but enjoyed coming to training. Under the encouragement and guidance of Nigel our coach this year the boys have developed into a strong squad and as they boys got to know each other they built a great team spirit. Manager Grahame Wood – West Essex Coach Tony Wiseman Dan Burnstone - CYCA Captain Various Vice Captain Various Review of season Another great season of cricket for this group. Winning the West Essex league, 2nd in a strong CYCA league and 3rd in the Terriers league. Knocked out of the cup in the first round against a strong Granta side (we hope for a kinder draw next season!). We were joined by some excellent new signings and all players showed great improvement in the first season of hard ball cricket whilst enjoying their cricket and having fun along the way. Well done all!

Squad 2015 Crocus

Manager Annette and Paul Coach Kevin Duers Leeman Dan Thomas Captain Vice Captain Review of season The Crocus team continues to play in the Essex Disability and Community Trust League which is organised by Essex County Cricket Club. The four teams that are in the league currently play kwik cricket tournaments throughout the year, indoors during the spring and then moving outdoors for the summer. This year the Crocus team has increased considerably in numbers and now has about 10 enthusiastic players whose strength and technique has greatly developed over the season. This year we have won two out of the five tournaments and narrowly missed, by two runs, winning a third. The other Essex Teams are Harold Wood, Springfield Lions and Basildon Spitfires Thanks must go to Kevin Duers for coaching the team and encouraging them so much. Also thanks are due to Daniel Thomas for his great commitment to the team, coaching throughout the year and running a lunch time session at the County High School. He has also brought on board Matt Lewis, who has helped immensely with training sessions throughout the summer. Thank you Matt! Thanks must also go to all the parents and grandparents who have supported the team this year, particularly those who have helped with transport whenever needed.

Manager Daniela Karsten Coach Mark Hughes Captain Rotated Assistant Cameron Taylor,Kiran Barve,Gavin Robert, Coaches Emma Borgeson,Jo Borgeson, Anthony Gerard Review of season Our u11 girls have competed in the West Essex u9 Terrier league. Despite not recording any wins, their enthusiasm and active participation in training and matches and visible improvements across the squad, have been great to see. Many have been able to successfully transition from soft ball to hard ball. Enthusiasm and determination of this team to play cricket epitomised in a game against High Roding on a day of showers, thunder and lightening. They displayed an undying will to play despite the weather conditions and competed well.

Manager Matt Clare Coach Steve Atherton Vince Taylor, Matt Latham Steve Livermore Captain Rotated Vice Captain Rotated Review of season A fantastic season overall with every one of the 40+ boys playing a part. Whilst league results have been mixed, it has been all about development this year and the group’s skill levels have improved steadily over the three months which has been great to see. On their day, this group is a match for anyone and their performances have been characterised by great team spirit, which will take them a long way. Above all, the boys have had much fun and formed new friendships whilst playing plenty of good cricket.

Squad 2015 under 9

Managers James Legg & Darren Cox Coaches Niraj Odedra & Matt Rowlandson Captain rotated Review of season - There was a flourishing U9 squad in 2015 with over 40 boys in total participating in both Sunday training and matches. There was plenty of competitive cricket with one team playing in the West Essex Terrier U9 league and one in the CYCA U10 league. It is a testament to the depth and talent in the group that everyone was able to participate in these matches and we ended up joint second in the U9 league and won the U10 league despite playing a year up. Six of the boys also competed in the Epping U9 tournament and finished runners up out of 7 teams. We also entered 4 teams into the Rainbow tournament which was unfortunately rained off but we look forward to clear skies for the re-scheduled date end of August. Thanks to all the boys for the effort put in this year and their love of cricket – there was huge improvement in the standard of cricket through the season – and those that gave their time on Sundays to help and coach especially Niraj Odedra, Matt Rowlandson, Tom Rodda, Duncan Pluck and Andy MacDowell.

Manager Jack Toroff, Phil Coach Nigel Tegg Wheeler, Darren Diggons Captain Vice Captain Review of season Competitive cricket starts at u9 in the West Essex League and u10 in the Cambridgehsire league. We decided our u8s needed to get matcg practice and have previously organised a couple of Saturday morning friendlies against Wenden – the only other local team that has such young players. We organised 4 such fixtures this year and, although we didn’t win any (we actually tied one!), the experience was invaluable for next year.
