HK&HD Cricket Association Annual Report 2008-09 IN RECOGNITION The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association would like to thank all volunteers, players, supporters, members, patrons, local councils, affiliates, employees and kindred bodies for their hard work and dedication. The continual success and growth of a non-profit sporting organisation can only occur as a function of the community support and goodwill that is extended by so many. Countless hours were contributed in ensuring that no stone was left unturned and no job was too complicated. It is with great pride we recognise those responsible for the grass-roots success of the game we love, the game we play with pride, respect and joy, and the game we will leave in better shape for the next generation; the national summer sport, Cricket. Furthermore, we would like to recognise and thank the following member/clubs for their affiliation with the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association; Affiliated Member / Club Girls Teams U/11-16 Teams Senior Teams Kanga Players CricHit (Girls) In2Cricket (Boys) In2Cricket (Girls) Asquith Rugby League - - 3 0 0 0 0 Beecroft - - 1 0 0 27 1 Berowra - 5 7 0 0 76 15 Castle Hill RSL 1 6 5 0 0 40 6 Galston-Glenorie - 2 2 0 0 32 0 Glenhaven - - 2 0 0 0 0 Berowra Masters – O40 - - 1 0 0 0 0 Hornsby Masters – O50 - - 1 0 0 0 0 HK&HDCUA - - - 0 0 0 0 Hornsby District 1 7 6 0 18 55 3 Kenthurst / - - 6 0 0 0 0 Upper Hills - 7 - 0 0 21 2 Kissing Point - 5 6 0 0 35 1 Ku-ring-gai Chase - - 1 0 0 0 0 Mt Colah - 3 2 11 11 0 11 Normanhurst-Warrawee - 7 7 0 0 21 0 Pennant Hills - 5 - 0 0 0 0 Pymble - - 1 0 0 0 0 Redfield College - 3 - 0 0 0 0 St Ives - - 6 0 0 0 0 Thornleigh - 2 1 0 0 27 2 West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook 3 25 11 110 8 0 0 CONTENTS OFFICE BEARERS 5 MEETING ATTENDANCES 6 EXECUTIVE REPORT 8 FINANCIAL REPORT 15 JUNIOR COMPETITION REPORT 17 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 19 REPRESENTATIVE COMPETITION REPORT 22 IN PARTNERSHIP 25 AWARDS 28 SPECIAL EVENTS AND SCORECARDS 32 HKHDCUA REPORT 38 HK&HDCA COUNCIL REPORTS 39 OBITUARY (MR. The 2008/09 season continued to be one of progression and consolidation. The hard-working Executive initiated many projects, with some requiring further development in the season to come. We extend our sincere thanks to the respective councils (Hornsby Shire, Ku-ring-gai Shire and The Hills Shire), for the ongoing commitment and hard work of their staff. Additionally to the NSWDCA and Cricket NSW, the efforts and support is truly appreciated here, at the grassroots level of our sport. Our relationship with the Northern District Cricket Club (NDCC) continues to improve in many key areas and it is extremely pleasing to see many of our former representative players move into the higher grades of the SCA competition. Particularly impressive was the rise to prominence of David Lowery (Kenthurst/Upper Hills) with his maiden first-grade century after only a few games in the top grade. NDCC are to be applauded for embarking on the development of an extensive off-season junior cricket academy, “Young Rangers”, to facilitate the ongoing development of our highly talented younger players. This change in direction will evolve to encompass all of our junior players in the years to come. The 2008/09 season has seen many highlights, amongst them being: Congratulations to the Asquith Rugby League (ARL) A-Grade, for winning a 4th successive A-Grade premiership. This equals the second longest winning streak of consecutive A-Grade premierships in the 83 years of competition held within the Association. Congratulations to the West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook (WPH-C) who won the “Reg Vernon Trophy” (Senior Club Championship) for the sixth consecutive season, an Association record. Barry McDonald (WPH-C) was awarded the "Cricket NSW 2008 / 09 Sydney North Volunteer of the Year", for his tireless work for his Club and the many years of service to the HK&HDCA. Kissing Point who reached the final of the Michael Clarke Twenty/20 Open Age Knockout Competition. The U13 IDCA who won their competition, winning four of the five games they played. The continued support and commitment of our major sponsor, Kookaburra Sports. The HK&HDCA truly appreciate the ongoing support and involvement of all our Patrons, including our two ladies of the game, Lisa Sthalekar and Denise Annetts. Seven clubs shared the senior competition spoils, with three of our smallest clubs experiencing the sweet taste of victory in their respective divisions. Berowra appears to be the big improver, with three premierships. Whilst Normanhurst-Warrawee (2) and WPH-C (4), shared the spoils in the junior competitions. Normanhurst-Warrawee won the “Jonathon Myers Memorial Cup” (Junior Club Championship). Murray Macdonald and his merry band of workers are to be congratulated as they took on the onerous task of overseeing the purchase and delivery of covers to all of our turf grounds. Our A-Grade, Colts, Masters and Representative players will all vouch for the value of this substantial financial outlay, as it appears more “turf” games were played than in the previous season. Warren Jackson has done a tremendous job in a short period of time as the incumbent Representative Secretary. The recent Representative trials at the SCG nets for the U/14-16, organised by Warren, were a great success (attendees: U14 - 37; U15 - 51; U16 - 28). Finally, to our respective Executive Officers (Graeme Kurtz / Benjamin Gussey) and the large number of volunteers, I sincerely thank you for your amazing levels of enthusiasm, drive, energy and commitment as our Association would not prosper without your efforts.

I met Christian Berglund in my first week at Loughborough University in 1990. Our shared interests, cricket, golf and ale mostly, made friendship easy as did his ability to make me laugh. Usually intentional, occas- ionally not, he was one of the funniest men I’ve ever met. He must have been because to this day I still think of him and chuckle. Of those still polluting the earth I must make special mention of one, a chap universally known as Spiller.

  • Relegation Heartbreak for Macc; Alderley Get Their Trophy
! ! Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER: WEEK 22 – SEPTEMBER 17 ! Relegation heartbreak for Macc; Alderley get their trophy ON the day chairman David Humpage handed Alderley Edge the ECB Premier League trophy they had clinched a week earlier, the principal drama was played out at Macclesfield in their key relegation battle against Nantwich. Watched by probably the largest league crowd of the season, the game was vital to both clubs, desperate to retain their premiership status, the Dabbers enjoying a slender six points advantage at the toss. Needing to force the pace, Macc did well to total 200-8, John Birchall 35, James Cross 32, Jimmy Warrington 4-66. Ryan Brown (47) apart, Nantwich failed to put down any anchors after tea and with the whole season coming to a climax, they were in trouble at 143-8 with eight overs left. Amid several stoppages to clear up the complicated points situation, Ben Johnston (29) and Jimmy Warrington (21) showed great skill by holding out against aggressive bowling and fielding to add 30 runs in a crucial unbroken partnership to close on 173-8, Rob Porter 4-48. This meant Macc pocketed 12 points and Nantwich six, the teams finishing level on 242. So the Dabbers stayed up having won five games to their hosts’ four. After finishing second to champions Hyde last season, this has been a disappointing campaign for Ray Doyle’s team, but the loss of Liam Livingstone to Lancashire and an ankle injury which laid low star bowler Jimmy Warrington until July were major setbacks. Macc have relied too much on all-rounder John Birchall and Aussie batsman Nick Bertus.
