Relegation – It's Going to Be Tight ! Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 14 - JULY 23 ! Relegation – it’s going to be tight THE scrap to avoid relegation from the ECB Premier League looks like going to the wire, Saturday’s rain-free programme - which produced all 18 definite results - creates a tight situation at the bottom with only three points separating eighth-placed Bramhall from Macclesfield, in 11th. Only Urmston, now 33 points adrift at the foot, look in real trouble. They were thrashed by 184 runs on the ground of leaders Alderley Edge, who maintained a 44 points advantage after rattling up 277-9, Khalid Sawas 64, Adam Worrall 60. Lancashire’s leg-spinning discovery Matthew Parkinson took 4-88 including the wicket of his Red Rose colleague Jordan Clark for 51. In reply, Urmston mustered just 93, Clark 5-41. Down Below, Neston recorded their second successive victory, by 32 runs at Nantwich, where they were second best until late in the game. Neston mustered 178, David Hurst 70, Ollie Griffiths 4-46 and Nantwich were coasting in response at 131-4. That is when medium pacer Matt Stewart stepped in, dismissed host skipper Ray Doyle for a sound 61 and went on to help bowl the Dabbers out for 146, with a smart 4-28. He was aided by Simon Mugava, 3-56. Skipper Nick Cantello was the star of Bramhall’s three wicket win against Toft with an unbeaten 110 to carry his side’s reply to 211-7. Toft had totalled 208-8 pre-tea, Morgan Clark 93, Ifti Naseer 3-72. Missing from this game were Lancashire starlets Rob Jones and Danny Lamb, both on Test match duty with England at Old Trafford. Macclesfield were comfortably beaten at Chester Boughton Hall despite posting 230-6, Ollie Marsden 78, Nick Bertus 56, Ash Davis 4-55. With a typically classy 116, Warren Goodwin led Chester’s charge to 231-2 after tea, helped by Rick Moore’s 55. Bowdon did admirably to win by 35 runs at Hyde after posting 251-8, Pat Ashling 67, Danny Williams 51, Dan Cranmer 4-76. Despite the ever-consistent James Duffy’s 83, Hyde were bowled out for 216 by Chris Ashling, 4-65 and Matt Tully, 3-50. Cheadle moved into mid-table with a five wickets home win over Timperley, Greg Dixon spending the whole game on the pitch. After fielding in Timpers’ 207, he hit an unbeaten 115 after tea when Cheadle coasted to 208-5. Rare win for Cheadle Hulme CHEADLE HULME recorded their second win, by three wickets, chasing Warrington’s 171-8 at Walton Lea, Alex Read 5-44, Sulman Malik 57. But the Grove Park men stay 11th, 39 points above wooden spoonists Tattenhall, who were again bowled out cheaply, this time for 95 by Weaverham (Kevin Waterhouse 4-25, Rob McMillan 4-28) who went on to win by five wickets. Didsbury made it 10 wins to dent Sale’s promotion hopes. Sale were bowed out for 142 and Didsbury responded with 143-2, Mike Marfani 69 not out, Simon Normanton 60 not out (and 3-44). Grappenhall stay second after a tight, two wickets win at Marple chasing 194-5 (Jim Morgan 76, Paul Wood 68). Teenager Albert Pennington, 57 and Gaz Burns, 55 knocked off the runs after recovering from 55-5. Oulton Park lie third after a one wicket home win against neighbours Davenham who scored 189-8, Givon Christian 79, Matthew Parkinson 4-83. Danny Leech 55 and Martin East 54 helped knock the runs off. Bollington won by six wickets at home to out-of-form Oxton, whom they dismissed for 144, Gayan Fernando 57, Jack Dickinson 4-28. Skipper Rick Hough top scored with 66 in Bolly’s response Record 9-17 for Dufty NORTHWICH’s Andrew Dufty produced a remarkable bowling performance at Stockport, taking 9-14 from 15 overs in a total of 104. These were the best-ever figures by a Northwich 1st XI bowler and fifth best in all-time League records. Earlier Northwich had scored 212-9, Sam Stoneley 59. Widnes’ ninth win was at the expense of Congleton, bowling out their visitors for 64 (Ben Scowen 41 not out), Ben Hewitt 5-10. Second placed Upton beat Christleton by nine wickets while Alvanley moved up to third with a five wickets home victory over Middlewich, In the return game between the New Boys Barrow beat Lindow by nine wickets, Bart Ryan-Beswick taking 6-35 and Iro De Silva 3-20 and 54 not out. • Alderley Edge Take Lead, Now Only 3 Points Separate Top 4 ALDERLEY EDGE Have Deposed Toft and Taken the Lead in the ECB Premier League for the First Time
! Cheshire County Cricket League ! 2015 NEWSLETTER: WEEK 15 - ULY 25 / 26 Alderley Edge take lead, now only 3 points separate top 4 ALDERLEY EDGE have deposed Toft and taken the lead in the ECB Premier League for the first time. They did so with a four wickets win over Bramhall, while Toft were held to a losing draw by Grappenhall, Hyde trounced Marple and Nantwich won a thriller at Chester Boughton Hall to leave just three points separating the top four clubs. Consistent Alderley replied with a comfortable 187-6 (Richard Wilkinson 65, Alan Day 60, Rupes Kitzinger 4-41) to Bramhall’s 185-9, Dan Lamb 75, Charlie Reid 3-38. Match of the day was a close and low-scoring affair at Chester where Boughton Hall were restricted to a modest 170, which would have been 64 less but for a stubborn 10th wicket stand between Alex Kegg, 40 and Harry Killoiran 37 not out. Their colleagues had no answer to the pace of in-form, Jimmy Warrington, who took 8-68. The Dabbers replied with 174-9, but only after a match-winning last wicket stand of 12 between Lancashire’s Liam Livingstone who wound up with 93 not out and the aforementioned Jimmy Warrington, a vital 0 not out. Jack Williams claimed 4-54 for CBH, now rank outsiders for honours. Champions Hyde made it seven wins in eight in a one sided game at Marple, bowling the home side out for 61, Dan Woods continuing his superb form with 7-26. Hyde knocked the runs off in 8.4 overs at 65-2.

Hyde on the other hand, reached 147-7 Dave Fitzsimmons 63) before Aussie paceman Aaron Smillie mopped up the tail to 151 all out with a 6-51 return. Usually intentional, occas- ionally not, he was one of the funniest men I’ve ever met. He must have been because to this day I still think of him and chuckle. Of those still polluting the earth I must make special mention of one, a chap universally known as Spiller.

2012 season: September 15 Newsletter URMSTON & WIDNES RELEGATED Nantwich complete title hat-trick NANTWICH completed a richly-deserved hat-trick of ECB Premier League championships on a momentous final day at Toft when they chalked up their eighth victory in nine completed games since the season’s halfway mark. They finish 12 points clear of Hyde, who also won their final game, at Marple. Receiving the trophy from League chairman David Humpage after the close of play, Nantwich skipper Andy Newton told a large crowd: “It has been a wonderful run-in for us to win this trophy a third time. We have done it in a different way, with some different players, but it’s been just as satisfying”. Amid rumours that he intends to stand down rather than try to top the hat-trick records of Bowdon (2002-03-04) and Oulton Park (2005-6-7), the Dabbers’ popular skipper said he planned to go on holiday to Portugal to contemplate. His team looked in trouble when they were reduced to 70-6, Jonny Kettle 26, by Toft’s young spinners, but a chancy 29 – the top innings of the day - by paceman Jimmy Warrington and Sam Hunt’s useful 21 helped them limp to 126. For Toft, Jimmy Lomas claimed 6-82 and Rob Jones 3-25. On a poor wicket shorn of all grass and with crumbling dust, Toft were reduced to 7-5 by Nantwich’s pacemen. England junior Jones, 28 and Ed Stubbs, 21, put up mature resistance, but were eventually were no match for the varied attack of Chris Connolly, who wound up with 5-27, left-arm spinner Ollie Griffiths, 2-9 off 12 accurate overs and the league’s top wicker-taker Warrington, 2-15 as they fell to 80 all out.

  • First Wash-Out Since 2007 the League on Saturday Suffered Its First Complete Wash-Out Due to Rain - Not a Ball Bowled - Since June 30, 2007
Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 20 – SEPTEMBER 3 WIDNES CHAMPIONS, UPTON UP; URMSTON DOWN; TATTENHALL DOWN; MIDDLEWICH OUT First wash-out since 2007 THE League on Saturday suffered its first complete wash-out due to rain - not a ball bowled - since June 30, 2007. At this late stage of the season due to many logistical complications, there are no plans to re-arrange the programme. It’s been a wet summer, the previous dampest Saturday being on April 30 when 10 games were cancelled or abandoned. Last season, May 2 saw 16 games washed-out. On August 9, 2008 16 games were cancelled and two played, but on June 30, the previous year, all 18 games were cancelled without a ball bowled. With seven points allotted all round and 50 still available from the last two fixtures on September 10 and 17, the main ECB Premier League upshot is that Urmston are relegated back to the First Division whence they came so spectacularly on the last day of the 2015 campaign. Macclesfield remain marginal favourites to go down with them, but the clubs immediately above - Nantwich, Neston and Timperley - are all in danger and Macc are due to host Nantwich on the last day. At the top of the table, Alderley Edge’s difficult game at Chester Boghton Hall was off which means that, with a lead of 23 points over Bowdon, they still have some way to go before claiming their first Premiership title since 2008. Especially as their last two fixtures are tough ones: home to Hyde and away to closest challengers Bowdon.

  • Can Hyde Retain Title?
Cheshire County Cricket League 2015 NEWSLETTER: WEEK 17 – AUGUST 8 / 9 Can Hyde retain title? HYDE are beginning to believe they can retain the ECB Premier League title after a remarkable run of victories have elevated them into second place in the table. Since their last defeat at Alderley Edge on May 23, Hyde have won nine out of 10 games and revenge over Alderley on Saturday by six wickets was their fifth 25-pointer in a row, similar to the late run which earned them their first championship in 2014. Alderley were restricted to 228-9, the in-form Alan Day scoring 64 and teenager Steve Perry 55, Danny Woods taking 4-57. Danny Berry was in fine form with 98 in his side’s reply, aided by Khalid Sawas, 49 and Harry Dearden, 44 as the Werneth Low men romped home at 230-4. Hyde still trail Toft by 19 points, the leaders hammering Macclesfield by eight wickets at Booth’s Park after bowling their visitors out for 209, Rob Keen 88, Rob Jones 5-42. Aussie Jake Hancock was in imperious form after tea, hitting an unbeaten 104, out of 210-2, he and Henry Hughes, 59 adding in an unbroken 160 partnership in the leaders’ 210-2..
