! 2015 NEWSLETTER: WEEK 14 - ULY 18 Leaders Toft tie with bottom club Cheadle CHEADLE moved off bottom place in the ECB Premier League when they claimed 16 tie points from a thrilling game against leaders Toft at Kingsway. Toft’s advantage is reduced to 15 points, while Neston sink to the foot of the table. Cheadle were put in and totalled 183, Greg Dixon 81, 4-67. Toft did not enjoy their usual fluency and needed a good knock from skipper Toby Drummond, 44 to give themselves a chance after slumping to 70-6. Fine bowling by Aussie Matt Fotia, 4-43 put Toft behind, but with one ball left they needed two to win and their last batsman Jimmy Lomas was run out going for the second – by star turn Fotia – leaving them on 183 all out. Chester Boughton Hall failed to close the gap, losing by three to old rivals Hyde at Werneth Low after running up 207, Jack Williams contributing an unbeaten 77 at number 8, while Jason Whittaker took 5-78. For Hyde, Harry Dearden was bowled by Alex Kegg for 99, then Rob Brierley and Jason Whittaker, both 33, helped their side over the line at 208-7. Kegg finished with 4-59. Alderley Edge and Nantwich both won to move in to second and third places respectively. Alderley’s victory was by eight wickets at Grappenhall chasing their hosts’ 224-9, Warwick Abrahim 42. In Alderley’s reply of 226-2, their top scorer with an unbeaten 70 was Sam Perry, star of the club’s talented Cheshire Under 15s cup-winning team. Alan Day scored 63 and skipper Adam Worrall 55 . Against Neston at Whitehouse Lane, Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone struck 165, the highest Premiership innings on record by a county contracted batsman. With 16 fours and 11 sixes off 107 deliveries, Livingstone and Steve Rimmer, 54, added 140 for the second in a tally of 266-4. Neston, who need to pull their socks up after collecting only 31 points from the last seven games, were all out for 88, James Fennah 33. Their batsmen had no answer to the pace of Jimmy Warrington, who took 7-49. National club championship quarter-finalists Bowdon continued their upsurge with a five wickets win at Bramhall. They replied with 201-5, Simon Marshall finishing with a tantalising not out 99, David Lamb 3-63. This followed Bramhall’s 199-9, skipper Nick Cantello 87, Matt Tully 3-77. Marple stay on the fringe after losing by five wickets at Macclesfield, the losers’ total of 163 being highlighted by 63 not out from wicket-keeper Mark Makin, Jack Ward claiming 5-63. Macc responded with a confident 164-5, Peter Barron 69. Field day for Parkinson brothers URMSTON’s charge up the First Division continued with an overwhelming 156-run victory at Christleton - by courtesy of the Parkinson brothers. Urmston declared at 295-3, Callum Parkinson, 129 and Calum Turner 88 putting on 170 for the second wicket. Bowling Christleton out for 139 (Tom Norris 37), Lancashire leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson had the remarkable figures of 13.4-5-32-8. Leaders Sale were held to a draw at Oxton. This allowed Timperley to step up their title charge with an 83-run win at Davenham after piling up 218-8, Craig Grindley 51. Davenham were all out for 135, Ian Grindley 4-27. Sale emerged with a 14 – 7 points draw from a tricky visit to Oxton after posting 233-7. Oxton replied with 180-8, Mark Debrabender 44, Rick Halkon 4-72. Oulton Park raced to a nine wickets win at Middlewich after their hosts had closed on 192-6, Jamie Williams 61, Andy Davies 51. Oulton responded with 193-1 from just 33 overs, Iro de Silva 77 not out, Martyn East 53, Danny Leech 52 not out. Cheadle Hulme beat Tattenhall by 19 runs at Grove Park after posting 176, David Brock 4-25, Dave Shewring 4-47. Tatters mustered 157, having no answer to the skills of Ifti Naseer, 6-53 and Rana Malook, 4-63. Weaverham won by three wickets at fading Didsbury, replying with 168-7 to their hosts’ all out 166. A close call for Warrington IF Warrington finish the season as unbeaten Division 2 champions, they will have no closer game than Saturday’s at Alvanley, where they scraped home by one wicket with four balls remaining. Alvanley posted 215-9 on groundsman Ian Charles’ flawless batting strip, led by Mike Rowlands, 51 and Stephen Charles, 49, against Aussie paceman Nathan Green’s 4-82. Warrington lost wickets regularly after tea, many to smart catches, Stephen Charles 5-41 and eventually needed 20 when injured opener Mal Agar came in at number 11 to join Nathan Green. Agar stuck to his job despite a smashed finger while his colleague patiently knocked off the runs to close at 218-9 from 49.2 overs. On this form Alvanley will not be relegated from the League, nor do they perhaps deserve to be with such excellent facilities for a small village club. Bollington won by four wickets at Bredbury St. Mark’s who are battling hard to retain their status. They replied with 181-6 to their hosts’ spirited 177-8, Chris Nuttall 66 not out, Sabir Mallie 4-63. Upton moved into third place with a two wickets home win against Mobberley, who were bowled out for 141, Matt Ingram 5-32. Ben Kant top-scored with 53 in Upton’s reply of 142-8, after being given some tense moments by the consistent Abdul Aqeel, who took 6-45 from 25 tight overs. Irby remain 32 points adrift in bottom placed after losing their 11th game, at Stockport. They mustered just 125, Dave Newman 37, Mike Eley 5-44 and the Cale Green men replied with 129-4, George Barber 48 not out. Congleton eased away from the danger zone with a 25 runs home win against Widnes after posting 171, Max O’Sullivan 60, James Menzies 5-70. Widnes were bowled out for 146, new England Over 50s batsman Phil Catterall 46, John Copeland 4-25. Brooklands played well to win by 55 runs at Northwich following an innings of 211-5, Dave Madden 72, Jack Bagshaw 67. !Northwich got to 156, Mark Walker 36, A.J. Hart 4-35. End of The Phone-in THE Saturday evening Phone-In by which method clubs have reported their 1st XI results to the League for many years, is being phased out. After games next Saturday, July 25 and starting the following week, August 1, 1st XIs will no longer be required to report their scores and other match details on the League’s dedicated results telephone line 01606 888745. This is because results are now widely available on the League website and the Competition Secretary and the 1st XI Results secretary, Mike and Wyn Talbot-Butler, wish to reduce the administrative post-match pressure on home captains and scorers. Clubs are welcome to phone in if they wish to notify the League of any notable events or performances they would like to be included in the Newsletter. In return for this post-match concession, home clubs are asked not only to post their basic score lines and results on the website by 10 p.m. on a Saturday as required by rule, but also the FULL SCORECARD by 10 a.m. on Sunday. If clubs will do this they will provide most, if not all, the information required to compile the front page, the results pages and the League table for the Newsletter. It has to be said that part of the reason for the change is the much-reduced quality of phoning-in, many clubs using mobile phones in crowded bars with information difficult to record. Home clubs should continue to complete both sides of the official League result sheet and submit it to the Results secretary ASAP and not later than the following Wednesday If any clubs have queries or problems with the above, they should contact [email protected] or call 01606 883715.

Umpires Quiz: by Alistair Davies LAST WEEK: The following took place in a recent 3rd XI league match between Alderley Edge and Wilmslow: the bowler delivered a front-foot no ball and was immediately called. The ball went on to hit the stumps and ricochet over the boundary behind third man. How many runs would be scored? ANSWER: Even though a No ball has been called, the ball is not dead; the batsman cannot be out Bowled, but as the ball goes over the boundary four No ball runs are scored, along with the allowance of one for the No ball. So five runs are scored in total. THIS WEEK: The team batting second have scored 150 - 6 and need one run to win. A fair is hit and (a) the batsmen run and complete two runs; (b) the ball crosses the boundary with the batsmen not attempting a run. What !total should be entered into the scorebook in the two alternate cases?
