Minor Counties Cricket Association Unicorns Championship Final 2015 A GUIDE TO CUMBERLAND CRICKET Cumberland CCC were formed in 1948 and have played in the Minor Counties since 1955, mostly with a conspicuous lack of success. There have been odd moments of triumph but many days of despair, many games where the County has batted twice and fielded once and the game has been over on the second afternoon. In a county where it seemingly always rains and where the sheep population far outnumbers the cricketers that is hardly surprising. To be a cricketer or cricket follower in this far flung and remote though beautiful outpost is a triumph of optimism over adversity.

Gleeson is a one-club man, playing for his native Blackpool where the great Harold Larwood was pro in 1938. His rapid progress since playing for Cumberland was recognised when he was chosen to make his first-class debut for Northants recently. has been ever-present in the Championship and impressed with bat and ball and his Richmondshire teammate Mike Layfield , a talented all round sportsman came in for his debut at Cambs and may also feature. Work commitments have ruled out Scott Lees from the Championship season so far after he was ever-present in 2014. Lees was brought up in the harsh school of League cricket but now plays his cricket in the leafier surroundings of Southport & Birkdale. A tax advisor by day, Lees is a talented all rounder who played for Lancashire under 19s alongside Bulcock and spent last winter playing club cricket in Melbourne. wise, Cumberland have a wealth of talent if they all fire at the same time, though that is something of a Spinner Chris Hodgson rarity. Jon Miles made his county debut at 16 and came through the ranks at Barrow. Nowadays the stylish left hander plays in the League after completing a Masters Degree. The highly rated Michael Slack is another newcomer and will be playing on his home club ground. Another product of the Development Team he tried his luck at Durham and is now at Penrith as he develops as a talented all rounder. Josh Tolley ’s pedigree is impressive- he just failed to win a full-time contract at Northants and has settled for being a self employed entrepreneur and pro at Crompton in the Central Lancashire League. He won a Village Cup at Lord's while playing for Woodhouses and also played for the successful Bamford Fieldhouse side. Tolley's opening partner is Lytham's Will Hale who has swiftly adapted to Minor Counties cricket and who scored a fine hundred at Bedford School. Neil Longhurst has long been one of the most respected batsmen in the Yorkshire Leagues and helps oversee cricket at Worksop College, where Joe Root was a pupil. And wicketkeeper is the hugely talented Liam Parkinson who broke the County scorer Geoff Minshaw Lancashire Second Eleven record for most dismissals in a match at Southport three years ago and has not been selected since. Liam is the captain of Grappenhall and is awfully posh. County Treasurer Eric Carter is the unsung hero of the County; he has umpired in the North Lancashire League for over 40 years and has witnessed many of the world’s best batsmen while maintaining a steely eye on the finances for what seems nearly as long. His specialist subject is mileage claims. Chairman Steve Sharp is recognised as one of the finest batsmen to emerge from the county and his unbeaten hundred at Lord’s in the one day final of 1989 was one of the best ever played by a Cumberland player. President Alan Wilson captained the County in their first ever List A game against Derbyshire in 1984 and had also been a stalwart of the Minor Counties, recently completing a three-year stint as President. To complete the squad is stalwart County scorer Geoff Minshaw who last year completed his hundredth County game as scorer Batsman Jon Miles under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Minor Counties Cricket Association Unicorns Championship Final 2015 TON-UP TOBY IS A CUMBRIAN NOW Minor Counties careers often begin in the most bizarre of circumstances. That was certainly the case for Toby Bulcock, who was just celebrating a win for his club Elton at Flixton in a Bolton Association game when he fielded a phone call from an unknown number. n the line was Mike Latham, who had been Ocharged with finding a player at the last minute after a late withdrawal for Cumberland’s game against Herts at Long Marston in 2011. “I’d met Mike earlier in the season at a game at Baxenden, my hometown club,” Bulcock explains. “I knew Mike from him presenting the cricket programme on BBC Radio Lancashire and he was always out and about watching games and scouting potential players for Cumberland. He asked for my number just in case an opportunity came up and a few months later here he was on the ‘phone.” Bulcock had represented Lancashire through the age groups and had completed a successful season as captain of the Under 19s side. He was also in his second year as professional at Elton where his performances had the eye. “I’d played for Baxenden, Accrington and Rawtenstall and was ready to make the next step in my career and take on bowling in spin partnership with James Beaumont, and the responsibility of being a club professional,” Bulcock since that game has never missed a Cumberland match. says. “For whatever reason, I never got a chance with In 2012 he was the leading wicket-taker in both the Lancashire after the Under 19s which was disappointing Championship and Trophy in the Minor Counties and so when I got the call to play for Cumberland I jumped at played a major role in the County defeating Wiltshire in it.
