PRESIDENT’S REPORT With one of the stranger finishes to a season ever, I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy as we head into the unknown for season 2020/21! There is every chance our 2020/21 season will be pushed back due to football but if that means that the recent pandemic has ceased then we cannot complain as life will hopefully be back to normal. It has now been two seasons without a senior premiership which is something that I feel we need to address from the top down. It is certainly not due to a lack of effort and our committee, coaches and captains who put in a great deal of effort through the season to give us the best chance for success. I feel that we are a victim of our own successes in recent years, often playing against other club’s higher teams. Having said that, our lack of recent success is something we need to rectify. We need to strive to be better and put measures in place to ensure we add to that premiership list in 2020/21.

Thank you as always to our faithful sponsors who contribute to the club financially and continue to support us, especially through the tough times we now face. Special thanks to our two major sponsors in Paul Money Partners (Paul & Liam Money) and LSA Partners (Marty Anderson) who continue to support us and have for a very long time. Thanks to Paul, Liam, Marty and all our sponsors for their dedication to our club and to Liam and his sponsorship committee for their work this season.

Our transition period entered a second season with the departure of more players due to retirement and seeking to spend more time with family. Whilst that hurt us in some areas, it also gave us the opportunity to have some young players in the higher grades such as Dillon Pote which will only hold us in good stead for the future.

Well done to Andy Villani who captained the club for a second season and did a great job leading from the front. Andy’s job was made even harder with the birth of Mia over the off-season so well done on juggling that extra responsibility AV! Well done to Andy and Dillon Pote who both made the Barclay Shield Team of the Year for 2019/20 which is just reward for great individual seasons.

Well done to all our captains in Mathew Doyle, Scott Gibbs, Tom Money, Matt Newell and Robin Parsons who did a great job leading their respective teams. All teams were in the finals mix with our bottom four teams reaching a semi-final and Matt Newell’s 5th XI reaching the grand final. Whilst it was not our weekend in the grand final, we had a raft of young players come through the ranks which was great to see and puts us in a good position to push for success in the future.

Thank you to the best coach in the DVCA Luke Rosbrook who led us once again this season. Luke does a lot of work behind the scenes as well as at training, whilst also juggling being a leading teacher and having three children. It is no easy task, but Luke goes about his business with a minimum of fuss so thank you Rozzi for all your hard work. Luke was ably assisted this season by Steve Villani who joined us after a year in Italy. We thought Steve may have mellowed over this time but if anything, he returned even more intense and even hungrier for success. Well done Steve and thank you for your leadership this season.

Thank you to our coach Jeff Callaway who worked with all of our batsmen in learning and getting better at the craft. Thank you for your guidance and dedication to our batting group.

Thank you to Scott Gibbs who took it upon himself to help with the coaching of our players. Scott is a magnificent Riverside person and we are lucky to have someone of his calibre in our ranks.

Thank you to my hard-working committee who as always did a magnificent job in managing the club. It was another big year for Riverside and the club relies on everyone’s work in co-ordinating functions, stocking the bar, running the canteen and a hundred other things that usually go unnoticed and unthanked.

Thank you to: Chris Salm, David Hyland, Martyn Anderson, Brett Money, Paul Sinclair, Steve Bowler, Matt McMaster- Smith, David Hoobin, Matt Newell, Nathan Hoobin, Aidan Amenta, Brett Lewis, John Miles, Kym Ellks, Wissam Ali & Luke Morgan. Special mention to Brett Money who does an amazing amount of work at the club, and away from the club which takes the pressure off everyone else. I could not think of a more deserving winner of the David Hyland Award for best clubman.

A couple of special thankyous; To Marty Anderson our treasurer who puts in countless hours for Riverside. We are all lucky to have you Martyn and we are glad you survived America and quarantine. Thank you, Marty.

Thanks to Nick Ellks for co-ordinating our private functions yet again. The club relies on these functions in order to keep operations (and the bar) ticking over so thank you Ellksy.

A big thank you to Kym Ellks who again has done a magnificent job coordinating the canteen and the afternoon teas this season. Kym is the first to arrive (usually before the sun is up on a Saturday) and the last to leave (not before telling Nick & Harry to behave) and we would be lost without you Kym so thank you once again for all your efforts. A very special thank you to April Anderson, Kristy Doyle & Jaymee Money who helped with the co-ordination and organisation of our Pink Stumps & Gracie’s Gift Day where we once again managed to raise a phenomenal amount of money for our cancer charities, RCD Foundation and the McGrath Foundation. We have now raised around $141,000 in three years for these charities which I am extremely proud of. It could not be done without the support of our players, supporters and the wider community so thank you for getting behind this day.

A great sign of how magnificent our club is was $5,000 Draw Day. With our usual chef Paula out of action the players took it upon themselves to step up to the plate and do the cooking for the day. It was a wonderful indication of our community and what makes our club the best. Thanks to Tom Money for MCing the day as always.

Thank you to Matthew Fleming, the president of the Diamond Valley Cricket Association. Matthew’s task is a thankless one and even more so this year with the unprecedented conclusion to the season which he handled very well. Thanks to Luke Morgan who organised a terrific Roast of Joey Fleming which was a great night and is one we will look to replicate in the future. A tremendous effort once again Joey.

Well done to Steve Gleeson and his junior committee on their season. They do a great job bringing rough the next crop of Riverside cricketers and are a very important part of our club.

Well done and thank you to Elliot Smale and Shane Doyle on running our Junior & Master Blast Program this year featuring an unbelievable amount of kids. It was fantastic to come down on a Sunday morning and see guys like Jeff Morgan helping out with Whatmough Park chock-a-block full of kids and parents all the way from Kalparrin Avenue to the river. The club is in great hands thanks to your efforts Elliot & Shane!

To my aunty Paula Money, who has been ill in recent times; I hope you are feeling well and that you recover to cook for us again next season as it just isn’t the same without you!

Thanks to my dad Paul, uncle Philip and brother Liam who I rely on for advice and support on a variety of issues across the season. My job is made easier by the support of you so thank you.

It would be remiss of me not to thank my wife Jaymee for all her work at Riverside and for allowing me to do the job that I do. She does it with a smile, rarely complains and understands that Riverside is not just a cricket club but a family. Thank you Jaymee.

It is with a great deal of sadness that I will be stepping down as president of the club after four seasons. It has certainly been a trying time and a great personal test but I feel I have done a reasonable job in leaving the club in a good position and given the job everything I have to give. I have had a lot of support over those four years and could not possibly thank everyone individually but thank you for having me and accepting me as the president and for helping Riverside to be the magnificent club that it is. As Gibbo always says, “we aren’t just the best club in the world, we are the best club in the universe”. The main highlight of my four years is no doubt the A Grade premiership in 2017/18. If I could bottle the feeling when Salmy hit that ball through the field I would. Having tasted that success I am hungry for more and I hope that our current crop can take us there again because we deserve it.

The other highlight for me has been the growth of Pink Stumps & Gracie’s Gift Day over the past three years. It is one that is close to my heart and I am so proud of the day that it has become. A lot of planning and organisation goes into it but the end result is what matters and I hope this day continues into the future for the sake of families going through what my family had to endure.

Thank you once again for all your support and I look forward to seeing you all at Riverside for season 2020/21.

COACH’S REPORT

The season started with the annual pre-season players meeting which was well attended as usual. This was an opportunity to welcome new players and returning players to the club, introduce the themes for the season and structure of the coaching group. After an extensive review from the previous season we came up with a structure we felt would best suit our developing group. I was to retain the role of Head Coach. Jeff Callaway would continue in his role as Batting Coach. Scott Gibbs was to be introduced as a Batting Coach/Coaching Advisor and we welcomed Steve Villani back to the club after a year in Italy, in the role of Senior Development Coach. The ultimate goals were to win premierships across all grades but ultimately it was to develop our playing group and continue to build a great environment where players felt they could come and be part of something much more than just a cricket club.

Some of our goals for the season included the following; • Introduce batting development groups for the preseason • Outline clear training times for the season • Clear focus on bowlers per net • More sessions to have an individual batting focus (8-10-minute hits) • Extended time for players batting in pairs • Fielding needs to improve!

Pre-season started with a specific batting focus in the weeks leading up to our official first session. These sessions were run by Jeff and Scott at Cutting Edge. The groups included a mix of our best batting talents and several guys that had been highlighted as up and coming players. The sessions focussed on batting development including skill set training, game development and the mental preparation. From the feedback we received from the playing group involved these sessions were excellent and gave many an opportunity to be best prepared for the pre-season and season proper.

Our club pre-season started on Tuesday the 6th August at Cutting Edge and was met with great enthusiasm and energy. We were scheduled to train on Tuesdays and Saturdays with our Saturday sessions dedicated to an hour and a half. Our sessions were extremely well attended and gave us a real outlook of what to expect for the season ahead. The competition for spots was at an all-time high and the separation between our playing group so tight. There wasn’t a great deal separating our 2nds right through to our 4ths.

The season brought forward many opportunities for several players across all the grades which is exciting as a coach because you want to see players get an opportunity and reward for hard work. It also gives us a chance to see who will rise to the challenge.

Unfortunately, the reality was that we were not able to maintain a settled side in our tope two grades which inevitably led to us struggling to find consistency and get the desired results. I look at this season in comparison to the 2017/18 season. In 2017/18 we fielded only 14 players in total in A Grade compared to that of this year, 20 players. In that same season in B Grade we fielded only 20 players, compared to that of this season of 30. This makes it very hard for the captains and playing group to gain any real momentum and cohesion. Saying this, we finished 5th in both grades indicating to me that if we can iron out this flaw from the previous two seasons, we will put ourselves back in the premiership race in both grades. This in tow will bring about a greater spread of talent across our whole club which will allow players to develop further and gain real success in their teams. It kills me to see so much hard work not being rewarded with ultimate reward in the shape of a premiership!

Congratulations to the following guys who debuted in A Grade this season. Dillon Pote who anchored our batting all season and had an outstanding year. Cameron Drake who came into the team to complement our spinning brigade and contributed to a great standard with the ball. Ben Jurkovic who through persistence and results was rewarded with an opportunity and experience in A Grade. Finally, Lachlan Woolcock who came in and had an immediate impact with the ball. These guys now have a taste of what it means to play at the highest level for the club and should continue to push for higher honours in the future.

For some perspective players who played in each grade throughout the season and ladder position at the end of the season.

• 20 players in A Grade (5th) • 30 players in B Grade 20 (5th) • 28 players in D Grade (4th) Semi-Finalist • 33 players in F1 (4th) Semi-Finalist • 30 players in F2 (2nd) Runner Up Grand Finalist. • 30 players in G2 Grade (4th) Semi-Finalist

All semi-finalists lost to the eventual premiers. A few results either way throughout the season allows a potential easier path to the Grand Final. I would like to extend my thanks to the following for the season just gone.

Steve Villani Thanks to Steve for his guidance and support throughout the season. He worked extremely hard this year to come back into cricket after a year in Italy. On top of that to take on the role in which he did and do it to the level he did shows just how much of a talent he is. The guys who worked with you throughout the year will be better for it and the initiatives you brought to the table from a coaching and management perspective made our trainings so much better. Thank you again for all that you did.

Scott Gibbs Thanks to Scott for leading the D Grade boys in a development role this year. Gibbo could clearly be playing a lot higher though came to the club with the idea to do this role to best support our up and coming players. To have someone of Gibbo’s ability and expertise to lead a group like this is invaluable. Thanks also for your coaching and guidance of our playing group throughout the year. Our players hopefully understand how lucky they are. Jeff Callaway

Thank you to Jeff in his second year as Batting Coach this year. His ideas and support around how cricket should be played and the time in which he has spent with a number of our playing group in their batting and cricket development is truly appreciated.

Thank you to Brett Money who was instrumental in the organisation around the players availabilities and in support in assisting selection in the lower grades. Your time and effort with this preparation is something that goes unseen by many but not unnoticed. Your work with the board and assisting getting training set up is much appreciated. To Xavier Youngman. Thank you for taking guys and getting them moving and fielding. Your initiative to coach these guys and go out of your way for the betterment of our playing group is priceless. I look forward to having you involved further in the coming seasons.

To Tom Money and Nick Ellks. Thank you for your Net Captaincy throughout the season. With so much on your plates you put your hand up to do again what is sometimes a thankless task but essential in the smooth running of training. Thank you for your patience in sometimes an unpredictable role. Thank you to everyone else who assisted with this role throughout the season.

A massive thankyou to our Captains. Mat Doyle, Scott Gibbs, Tom Money, Matt Newell and Robin Parsons. Your leadership and contributions to the teams, training, selection and many other areas is outstanding. I have had the privilege of working with you for a number of years and am extremely grateful for everything you do for the teams and our club. Thank you to everyone else that assumed a captaincy role throughout the year. In particular, Cam Lea.

To the president Tim Money, committee, playing group and general supporters. I am lucky to be able to lead such a great club. We are true leaders in the DVCA on and off the field. We are the template for other clubs in how to succeed and be more than just a cricket club.

To my wife Krystal, my kids Maple, Easton and Delilah. Thank you for allowing me to stay involved at such an involved level in the game. I wouldn’t be able to do this without you and your support. I love you all very much.

Regards Luke Rosbrook Coach

st 1 XI (DVCA Barclay Shield)

Cricket is a simple game. In our game all we have to do is make more runs than the opposition to win. As players we have a real tendency to overcomplicate and overthink things, making it a much more complex game than it actually is. We can get caught up in having too many focuses, setting excessive goals, having too many themes that end up (in my opinion) being detrimental to an individual’s performance. As a batsman how many times do the thoughts “don’t get out, don’t get out” run through your mind? Why do we pre-determine to leave the last ball of an over rather than look to score off it? As a bowler why do we try and bowl three different balls an over and take a every over, rather than bowl six balls the same and bowl a maiden? We know that at our level of cricket batsman get themselves out, they can’t help themselves. Think about how many times a bowler got you out this season…

Therefore, my aim this season was to strip it right back and have a simple game plan on the back of three basic themes: • Plan (How are you going score? How are you going to get the batsman out?) • Intent (Play with intent. Look to score, back up, walk in with purpose, hit the crease hard) • Execute (Execute your plan) *This is key.

Every Saturday I reminded the players of these three themes and they were our focus for the year. Plan, intent, execute. Simple and positive.

The last two seasons have been a bit of a disappointment in terms of not making finals, however they have once again been a success in player development. In two seasons we have had ten debutants. Six last season and four this season. The debutants this season were Dillon Pote, Cameron Drake, Lachlan Woolcock and Ben Jurkovic. So, what happened in season 2019/20 I hear you ask? Read on and I will explain how the Riverside Cricket Club started building towards the 2020/21 premiership.

If you look at the ladder it says that we finished fifth which is correct. This suggests that we were the fifth best side in the competition. It is probably a fair reflection of how we played throughout the year and our lack of consistency, however I believe that is not a fair reflection of the talent and potential we had in the side. But you just can’t rely on talent and potential. You have to rely on taking your chances when they come your way and capitalising on them, something we did not do well this season. In saying that, I firmly believe that if we had have snuck into finals we would have given it a good shake. We played some fantastic cricket over the last couple of weeks of the season and were a side in form and a side, no doubt, that other sides in the finals did not want to play. It is easy to say this once the season has concluded but I really do think that we could have done some damage.

So, what happened in season 2019/20 I hear you ask again? Basically, our best cricket was good enough to beat anyone but we didn’t play our best cricket for long enough or take our chances which cost ourselves a couple of games that we should have won. Specifically, Heidelberg in round 1 and Plenty in round 4. Against Heidelberg we made 8/165 batting first and they passed us eight down with eight overs to go. The disappointing thing about this game is that we dropped six catches which you cannot afford to do when only defending 165. I remember saying after the game that I hoped this result did not come back to bite us later in the year. It did.

Taking on Plenty we batted first and made 295 thanks to a magnificent century from Steve Villani who was controversially run out just after the tea break for 102. I’d say you would win 9/10 games if you make 300 but unfortunately for us this was the 1/10 games you lose. Even though we made 295 we probably left about 50 runs out there and then coupled with a very bad day with the ball in hand, Plenty were able to chase our total down with five in hand and seventeen overs to spare! Again, in the changerooms afterwards I said that I hoped this result did not come back to bite us, instead it haunted us.

Therefore, after four rounds we were 2-2 with two very big games leading into Christmas against quality opposition in Epping and Diamond Creek. We could have easily been 4-0 and realistically probably should have been 3-1 as a minimum but it just wasn’t to be. The two games that we did win in rounds two and three were both very good wins in tough, wet conditions against Lower Eltham and Bundoora. In particular the Lower Eltham

game where we lost overs due to rain, made a bold decision to declare and in the end were good enough to defend our 8/201. We could have easily batted our overs out and taken the three points for a draw but we did not want three, we wanted six. As a result we dangled a carrot in front of Lower which they took and we were able to dismiss them for 186, claiming their last six wickets for seventy runs.

Epping amassed a very good total of 4/287 against us in round 5 which after the days play we were confident in chasing down as the previous two weeks scores of 300 had been made on a very fast Whatmough deck. Our chase was tracking well and we were 4/171 with plenty of overs left before a collapse for the ages took place. We lost 6/25 to be all out for 196. 2-3 heading into the last game before Christmas against premiership favourite Diamond Creek away.

Day one did not start well as we quickly found ourselves 3/11 early on. An 82 run partnership between Dillon Pote and Nathan Chrimes got us back into the game at 3/93 but then similar to the week before a monumental collapse saw us lose 7/40 to be dismissed for 133 in the 63rd over. We managed to take one wicket and Creek were 1/15 overnight requiring another 119 runs to win off 80 overs. In what was arguably our best bowling performance for the season, we executed our plans brilliantly. It took Creek 85 overs to chase down our total of 133 for the loss of seven wickets. Even though we lost the game and found ourselves sitting 9 points out of the four we took great belief from that game knowing that we could mix it with the best. If we could get our batting and bowling to both fire at the same time we would be a huge threat after the break.

Post-Christmas we knew we basically had to win every game to make the finals. If we didn’t we needed to rely on other results which is something you never want to do. We had games against Macleod, Lower Eltham, North Eltham, Rosanna and Bundoora. All very winnable games if we played somewhere near our best.

Things started off well with a good win against Macleod at home. We made 223 with the top five all chipping in S Money (27), Hoyne (25), Pote (48), S Villani (56) and Chrimes (41). However, once again we had a calamitous collapse and lost our last five wickets for five runs! Luckily for us we had 40 too many runs on the board. A superb individual bowling performance by Luke Morgan (6/46) saw us dismiss Macleod for 183.

Round 8 saw us take on Lower Eltham again in a one-dayer away. Both sides were vying for fourth spot and it basically looked like whoever won the game was a massive chance to play finals. Unfortunately we did not turn up with the stick that day. We were embarrassed and bowled out for 111 which could have been a lot worse were it not for a well made 28 from Seany and 38 from Potey. Our season was on the line and we needed to respond in a big way with the ball, which we did. Lower were cruising at 2/80 before a fantastic spell from debutant Cameron Drake (1/18 off 8) saw them collapse to 5/91. Unfortunately, it was not enough and Lower managed to chase the runs 7 wickets down. Another game that would come back to bite us.

This meant there were three games remaining. We were now at the stage where we absolutely could not drop another game and had to rely on other results which made things tough. In a heavily rain affected match in round 9 against the Pirates (North Eltham) we scrapped our way to a total of 179. Both sides needed 6 points as both were in range of the four. For us to get 6 points we would need to dismiss the Pirates within 46 overs and for them to get 6 points they would obviously need to chase down the runs in 46 overs. If neither of these scenarios did not occur then it would be a drawn match and both sides would walk away with 3 points (no real help to anyone). It was a seesawing 46 overs with both sides being ‘in front’ at various stages. The scene was set for a grandstand finish and that’s just what we got. With two overs remaining North Eltham required 11 runs and had four wickets in hand. Enter Chris Salm. Salmy put his Superman cape on and took 3/0 in the penultimate over! Therefore, the equation for the last over was we needed one wicket and they needed 11 runs still. They decided to call off the chase, shut up shop and I unfortunately could not take the 10th wicket. Both sides shook hands and walked away with three points.

Two rounds to go and somehow we still found ourselves in the hunt for finals as a couple of results had gone our way. We played Rosanna away in round 10 and put on a clinical display with both and bat ball managing to chase down their total of 117 with 6 wickets in hand and 5 overs remaining. This was a memorable win for a couple reasons. 1) Lachlan Woolcock and Ben Jurkovic both made their A Grade debuts and were presented their caps by club legends Mark Doyle and Scott Gibbs.

2) Lachy took a wicket with his very first ball, dismissing Sam Sheehan with a beautiful outswinger that crashed into his off stump. What was even better was the fact that Sammy cried “oh no” as he realised he had been beaten all ends up and his woodwork was about to be destroyed.

Coming into the last round against Bundoora we needed a hail Mary. We needed to win and to win well, along with two other results to go our way. Bowling first we were able to dismiss Bundoora for 110 off the back of three wickets each from Seany and Drakey. We were able to chase these runs down only losing three wickets. Chrimes (47) and Pote (36) being the main contributors. We won and we won well, however only one of the other results went our way. Hence, we finished 5th and rued a season of missed opportunities. Missed opportunities that I know will drive this group to bigger and better things in 2020/21.

Congratulations to Steve Villani for winning the A Grade batting award with 280 runs @35. It was Steve’s first season back after spending 18 months abroad in Italy and it did not look like he’d missed any cricket at all. Also, a massive congratulation to Dillon Pote on making the Barclay Shield Team of the Year. Dillon amassed 346 runs @31.45 as a 19-year-old in his first season at the club. Dillon batted at 3 and made that spot his own. A truly fantastic year and I look forward to seeing “Choccies’s” Riverside career flourish in the years to come.

2nd XI (DVCA B Grade)

The 2019/20 season presented itself as a season where opportunities would be available to a number of players given the depth of our playing group. This was evident in the B grade side with 28 players being used throughout the season, with Kyle Mahony and Ryan Russell playing their 1st B grade games with the club. Player availability challenged selection each week with injury, work and general availability ensuring our playing XI rarely remained settled.

Inconsistent sums up our season. After a promising start to the season winning the first 3 games, we were not able to consistently string wins together. Despite the inconsistencies as a team and individually, there were some fantastic individual performances throughout the season. • Ben Money’s of 231 against Macleod was a pleasure to watch and his near flawless innings ensured we would not see him in B grade for the remainder of the season as he moved into the A grade side. • Connor Gedge making his first hundred opening the batting in a one day game against Rosanna. I’m sure this will not be his last. • Cameron Drake’s impact with ball week after week saw him play an important role in which he was well rewarded with an A grade debut. Time and again Drakey was able to peg things back or take a wicket when needed. • Lachie Woolcock’s consistency with his bowling, in which 1/3 of his overs bowled where maidens saw him rewarded with an A grade debut.

Our batting was led by experienced players Elliot Smale (322 runs) and Xavier Youngman (263 runs). With both Elliot and Xavier scoring hundreds throughout the year. They were a terrific example for the younger players to bat around and watch. It was great to see Nathan Bragg return after the Christmas break and his innings of 116* included some of the cleanest hitting you will see. Ben Jurkovic’s inclusion into the side was well deserved and the way Ben fights and scraps with every ball being a contest is a great example for all. Ben’s determination to bat within his own limitations and make the bowlers bowl to him saw Ben become the 3rd player to make an A grade debut from the B grade side this year. Along with Cameron and Lachie, I’m sure we will see these 3 players play many more A grade games.

Wickets were shared amongst a left handed dominant bowling attack. Lachie (14 wickets), Jacob Bowden (14 wickets), Elliot Smale (13 wickets) and Brett Lewis (12 wickets) shared the majority of the bowling workload. James Hartigan’s role at the end on the season was tremendous with Jim taking 9 wickets in 4 games at an average of 4.6, this would see B grade keep its season alive going into the last rounds. The experience of Cameron Drake and Luke Morgan saw them contribute greatly for the games they played. It was great to see the development of Jacob Bowden with improvement throughout the season. A tall left hander with pace and swing, I’m glad he’s on our side as he will be a handful to bat against as he continues to develop.

This year the B grade side was fortunate to have experienced players come through the side at various times. Thank you to Steve Villani, Daniel Hoyne and Scott Gibbs who were able to pass on some great in-game knowledge to our players which was fantastic. Thank you to both Elliot and Xavier whose experience and ideas where always welcomed.

Congratulations to the teams and players who made finals and while the premierships eluded us this year the effort and commitment throughout the club for the year cannot be faulted. A big thanks to our Coach Rozzie whose work throughout the season and preseason ensured we were at our best week in week out. Finally thank you to all the players who played B grade this season, the commitment, effort and respect you show for the game, the club and for one and other fantastic. The culture created by the players of our club made for a fun and enjoyable experience whether game day or training.

3rd XI (DVCA D Grade)

Our season started with a club focus in D grade to develop our younger players and help them be ready to play at a higher level when the opportunity arrived. Our vision was to have at least 8 spots in our team for player development that was to be over seen by myself, Nick Ellks and one other seasoned player (most likely Harsh Dhillon, Cam Lea and James Hartigan).

We had the aim of making D Grade as professional as possible and as close to a B Grade standard in all aspects. From Preparation During the week, to planning on match days, our warm ups, our intensity, our game plans and match awareness. I strongly believe we were able to produce this most weeks and given our results from a home and away perspective I think we achieved these goals. Our Semi Final was all of this for the first 95 overs. Having dismissed Banyule for 145 and for us to be 1/40 and in control only for some very ordinary and let’s be honest, piss poor and very soft outs which completely ruined what should have been a pretty comfortable albeit hard working run chase. The gains we made during the year went by the wayside on our most important weekend. Losing 8/23 on a very flat wicket to a solid & discipline attack (solid, not great) was really unforgivable.

If the players in that final truly believe they are potential A grade players then this is a reminder that Talent, Hitting Balls and Effort doesn’t win you games on their own. You need to be able to tough out, grind out and have a fierce determination to get the job done yourself and not leave it to the next batter. It was 145 to get in 95 overs, not 275 off 80. 5 of our top 6 out Caught behind and 4 of those playing expansive shots outside off stump, just isn’t good enough when you need 105 off 65 overs with 9 wickets in hand. Hopefully lessons were learnt from this disappointing day as I firmly believe it cost us the Premiership. We were easily the best and most talented side in D Grade this year. But enough of me lamenting what could have been. I thoroughly enjoyed Captaining this team as we saw some fantastic cricket in all aspects of the game this year, and I have no doubt the development of our players was evident on match days.

From a batting view, Kyle Mahoney, Ben Jurkovic, Ryan Gleeson, Alex Merrifield, Ryan Russell, Dempsey Mills, Harry Ellks and Calin Skiba, all showed that they have the ability to bat well and although not all had the seasons they had wished for at the start of the season they definitely made in roads. Batting at local level is a difficult thing at times for younger guys as we all want to produce results here and now, week after week but the reality is we only get maybe 10 really good opportunities a year to put runs on the board. Becoming a good and consistent player sometimes takes years because of this. These guys along with all of the club’s young batsman though need to keep putting in the work and do it year after year for 6/7 years before they will really reap the rewards for their efforts. Patience is key and a willingness to keep training and doing the work. Sean Money, Nathan Bragg and Dan Hoyne are perfect examples to follow.

Bowling wise, the improvement was also there to see - Cameron Drake(finished in A Grade), Ryan Gleeson (15 wickets from just 40 overs), Joel Ramsey, Nathan Hoobin and Dempsey Mills were all fantastic and were perfectly backed up By Harsh, Jimbo and Myself. We genuinely bowled well in most games throughout the season. My only criticism was occasionally we dropped a fraction short and wide. As finals approached this was the reason Hoobs squeezed in and unfortunately Harsh and Rambo missed out. But the way both of them took missing out was first class and I couldn’t be prouder of them. In Rambo we have a young man who will continue to charge in and give his all and on the back of a serious shoulder injury, I think had a great season none the less, bigger and better things will come your way.

We had some great individual performances during the season and some of these were: • Ben Jurkovic’s 50 odd with a broken finger and partnership with myself of 135 v Laurimar in rd 3 and then Followed up with 129no against a quality Lower Eltham attack. • Ryan Gleeson’s 85 v North Eltham and 6/14 v Greensborough • Alex Merrifield’s match winning 86 v Plenty, along with Jimbo and Rambo’s batting in that game to help us win 9 down. • Kyle Mahoney’s 73 v North Eltham & 84 v Greensborough • Nick Ellks 83 v North Eltham & 69 v Lower Eltham • Glenn Smyth 77no v Lower Eltham • Jimbo’s heroics with 50no v Laurimar

• The fact that we only have 1 bowling stat mentioned here is a credit to the bowling group that we had and the consistency they showed each and every week. Wickets were shared in all but one game. Special thanks to them all, Hoobs, Drakey, Harsh, Rambo, Millsy, R2, RG and others that chimed in across the season.

Wicket Keeping is a difficult job at the best of times and this year we were so lucky to have Tommy Hewett do the job in our Grade. Tom’s Level of keeping is easily B Grade Standard if not better and we are blessed at this club to have Hoynie and Johnsy as role models for Tom to learn from. Although frustrated at times during the year from a Batting Point of view the standard of Keeping Tom displayed never waived in the slightest. It was a pleasure to watch. Tom’s batting is equally important, unfortunately a lack of runs early cost him opportunities later in the season and we agreed with a few games to go that it was more beneficial long term to get more batting time in the middle at his age. Your work ethic and willingness to learn will hold you in good stead for years to come Tom.

Nik Martin also did a great job behind the stumps as well and his semi-final display was faultless, Nik is a natural in all aspects of the game and hopefully we see much more of it over the next few seasons. Thanks for your efforts Nik. I’d like to really thank the Senior guys that played such an important part in the season from a playing point of view first but also a leadership point of view. Nick Ellks, Harsh Dhillon, James Hartigan, Cam Lea and Cameron Drake. Thank you for the selfless way you guys went about playing in our team this year. Your support and experience was greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Luke Rosbrook and Steve Villani for all your support and guidance as Club Coaches. Your job is the most difficult of anyone in the club on field wise and I thank you both immensely.

To Barrel and Committee for all your great work in running the club. Everyone who’s not on the committee owe you all a debt of gratitude. Special mention to Barrel for the 4 years of unbelievable service as our President and To BT who’s work ethic in his roles around the club shouldn’t be unappreciated or taken for granted, thanks heaps BT. Huge huge thanks to Kym Ellks for everything you do on match days. We all love you and thank you so so much. To Ellksy and Cam who stood in as Skipper when I was out, thanks for keeping us on the same path for the whole season.

And finally, to all the guys who represented the club in D Grade this year, thanks for all of your effort both at training and on match days. It was a privilege and a pleasure to lead you all on field.

Let’s keep striving to be Better players, Better teammates, Better Clubmen and most of all Better People. That’s what makes a great Club.

4th XI (DVCA F1 Grade)

The 2019/2020 was a very enjoyable time for all involved in the F1 side (or the fourths as we like to refer to it when discussing our cricket careers in social circles). We were able to make the finals once again, culminating in a tight loss to eventual premiers in Diamond Creek. The side fielded 33 different players throughout the year including a mix of youth and experience. There was many entertaining (and very much appreciated) cameos from a number of club legends (both new and old) to ensure we fielded a strong and competitive team each week. Some great memories and highlights from the year included:

- The bowling attack was very well led throughout the year by Josh Rae (20 wickets), Josh Money (14 wickets) and Wissam Ali (23 wickets and winner of the bowling average). - The leading run scorers were Glenn Smyth (238 runs in 4 innings) and Alex Merrifield (237 in 5 innings). Chooka and Al went on to play the majority of the year in higher grades on the back of some great performances. - The development of young players in Josh Rae, Cal Skiba and Luke Jurkovic. Josh works hard on his game at training and is a player to look out for next season and into the future. Cal who is a young player on the rise did very well making 216 runs for the year. Cal put his hand up to open the batting and did a wonderful job. Luke Jurkovic is another young bloke to look out for. He bats, bowls and fields well and is another player with a promising future at Riverside. - Some notable individual batting performances were from Chooka Smyth (83* vs Rosanna and 77* vs Old Paradians), Al Merrifield (a blazing 92* vs Diamond Creek) and Aiden Amenta (88 vs Mill Park, including the greatest late cut ever seen in a game of cricket). - The weekly Wissam Ali show. Wizz had a great year with the ball and is a real competitor who showed increasing maturity as a bowler throughout the year. - The cameo performance from Luke Edmonds in perhaps one of the most entertaining debuts of all time was a stand out against Rosanna. After a few seasons off and reluctantly taking the ball, Luke took 3 wickets (and probably should’ve had 2 more!) to dismantle the Rosanna side. It’s not often you win a game where you drop 10 catches, but we did it!

Finally, I just want to say thank you to everyone at the club for making Riverside the great place it is. Thank you to Rose, AV, SV and BT for supporting me as captain throughout the year. It would be remiss of me not to mention the support from our scorer Richie Mitchell. Richie is a great asset who genuinely loves the club and gives his time to us each and every week. Thank you Rich!

5th XI (DVCA F2 Grade)

In F2 we had a great home and away season, with 7 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses setting up a finals appearance finishing 3rd on the ladder. Throughout the season we had some very good wins and some great individual performances. The close games that we won this season were the ones we lost last season, which made all the difference as to where we finished on the ladder. This all came down to the experience that the younger guys learnt over the past 2 years and from the training improvements from this season.

In round 1 Banyule batted first and made 6/120 from their 35 overs, Callum Bragg 2/5 off 6 overs. In reply we made 4/122, M. Newell 42. This was a good win to start the season, as Banyule always seem to have strong teams.

In round 2 we took on Lower Plenty, batting first we set a score of 9/192, S. Bowler 40 and S. Merrifield 35 with the rest all pitching in. we kept Lower to 8/119 from their 68 overs, W. Mills 2/23 off 10 overs and C. Melville 2/23 off 7 overs. This was another very important win as Lower Plenty were a finals team last season.

Round 3 saw us take on Lalor Stars who played off in last season’s grand-final. Losing the toss and being sent in to bat we made 5/148, M. Amenta 76. Lalor’s batting proved too strong for us as we only took 1 wicket defending our score, Lalor finished 1/149, C. Bragg 1/13 off 4 overs

Round 4 saw us taking on Rosanna which was a game I was confident of getting the win against. Rosanna won the toss and batted first and we bowled them out for 86, M. Newell 4/7 including a hattrick. Aidan always tells me I just bring myself on to clean up the tail. In reply we made 4/124 dec. J. Miles 33 and M. Amenta 28n.o. in Rosanna’s second innings they put up more of a fight and we only took 1 wicket for 95 runs.

Round 5 we won the toss against Whittlesea and batted first making 9/144 from 66 overs with the runs shared around, S. Bowler top score with 35. We were one player short the first week and we had a very important last wicket stand in this game between C. Melville (12 n.o.) and W. Mills (7) as we only won this game by 1 run. We managed to bowl Whittlesea out for 143, W. Mills 5/29 off 12 overs, M. Newell 4/55 off 17. It was a very good bowling display from Wes Mills and Noah Gleeson bowling from one end in 5 over spells that won us this game. Two boys who just bowled in good areas all day and Whittlesea found it hard to score freely off them, unfortunately for Noah he didn’t take a wicket finishing with 0/35 off 10 overs.

In round 7 we took on Lower Eltham, another finals team from the previous season. Lower won the toss and batted first posting a score of 3/170, A. Newell 1/25 from 6 overs. We got off to a good start losing our first wicket at 51, M. Newell 27, S. Bowler 24, then we lost wickets at regular intervals falling short, making 9/130 in reply.

Back after the Xmas break for round 8 we were taking on Rosanna again, batting first we were bowled out on the last ball of the innings for 122, S. Merrifield 25, B. Xerri 23. Knowing Rosanna wasn’t a strong team we were confident of defending our score and were able to keep them to 7/76 from their 35 overs, W. Mills 2/6 off 7 overs, J. Devine 2/10 off 7.

Round 9 we were back playing against Lower Plenty and were able to bowl them out for 116 from their 35 overs, D. Hoobin 3/13 off 4.5 overs and J. Devine 3/16 off 7 overs. In the run chase we didn’t get off to a great start losing our first 4 wickets for 32 runs, but with M. Amenta (20 n.o.) at the crease and joined by N. Bragg (67 n.o.) we got the job done, finishing 4/120 from 28 overs.

Round 10 finished in a draw against Lower Eltham due to rain interruptions. Lower Eltham won the toss and sent us in to bat. At the tea break the rain came and the rest of the day was called off. Retuning the following week we resumed batting and faced our full allotted overs finishing with 7/291, M. McMaster-Smith 148 and B. Ryan 57. Lower Eltham finished on 3/147 from 34 overs. We played for the draw as this guaranteed us a finals spot.

Round 11 saw us up against Heidelberg again and as we are playing against their thirds they had dropped a couple of players from the seconds (B grade) to give their younger players experience in the higher grade. Their bowlers that were dropped down proved too strong for us as we finished on 7/118 from 35 overs, M. McMaster-Smith 51, including breaking the most runs in a season record in this game. We only managed to take 2 wickets defending our total as Heidelberg passed us finishing on 2/123 from 29 overs.

Round 12 was my 300th game and one I won’t forget for all the wrong reasons. Taking on top of the ladder Lalor we won the toss and batted first, bowled out for 47, M. Amenta 26 the only one to get a start. Lalor then went on to pass our score none down in 4 overs.

The semi-final against Banyule was played at Whatmough no. 2 even though we finished 3rd for the season, due to Banyule having their top 3 sides in the finals as well. Banyule won the toss and batted first and we bowled them out for 181 off 65 overs, M. Newell 4/25. I thought all our bowlers bowled well and we kept them to a score we could chase down, although I knew we would have to bat well. We managed to survive the first 3 overs before returning the next day to continue our chase. We lost a couple of early wickets on that second day, before a good 50 run partnership between Matt Amenta and Harry Elks (21) got us back on track. When Harry went out we lost another quick wicket and that brought Tom money to the crease to Join M. Amenta for a 30 run partnership. Matt Amenta (57) was the next wicket to fall which brought me out to the crease. Tom and I had a good partnership going when Tom told me he could feel his hamstring about to give out. Tom (31) was the next wicket to fall, Simon Merrifield (11 n.o) joined me (36 n.o.) at the crease and we were able to see us through to the grand final.

In the grand-final we were up against Lalor, who have been the team to beat the past 2 seasons, having also made last season’s grand-final. We won the toss and batted first, struggling to score as Lalor’s bowlers were bowling in good areas consistently. Matt McMaster-Smith (33) and M. Amenta (14) were the only ones to reach double figures on our way to 65 from 53 overs. Lalor has a strong batting line up and I thought our bowlers bowled well even though we only took 1 wicket. It took Lalor 30 overs to chase down our runs. They are an aggressive batting team and like to score quickly, so I thought this was a great effort, especially from our young guys, A. Newell 1/15 off 6 overs, W. Mills 0/7 off 7 overs, C. Melville 0/16 off 7 overs and J. Devine 0/10 off 3 overs. The experience these boys would’ve gained from this grand final will be invaluable.

I would like to take this chance to thank a few people. Matt Amenta for collecting the money each week, Simon Merrifield, David Hoobin, John Miles and Steve Bowler for the on-field support and for setting up the grounds and umpiring and all the boys in the team who umpired at square leg and scored without complaint each week. Thanks to Rosy and S.V. for their support and guidance over the season and to Scott Gibbs for coaching the boys, their batting and bowling improvements were visible in F2 over the season. A big thankyou to Brett Money for all the work you do chasing up players to fill spots and for getting as much team balance as possible for the lower grades, the lower grade team selections aren’t as simple as you might think. Lastly thanks to all those that came out to support us in our grand final.

6th XI (DVCA G2 Grade)

G2 had a really good season winning some tough matches especially the last two season games against the top two sides, which we had to win to get into the finals. We had some excellent contributions with both bat & ball especially the Junior players. We had 6 players whose total runs for the season was over 100 with special mention to Matt McMaster-Smith who scored 624 runs and young Will Hewett (Jun) who contributed 102 runs. Then with the ball Noah Gleeson 15 wickets with a 4/24 being his best and his dad Steve Gleeson taking 12 wickets with a nice 4/20 along the way.

Our Season consisted of 13 games (Incl. the Semi Final) – 7 Wins 1 Draw & 5 Losses. We had 29 different players playing for this team of which 8 juniors played. It must be noted that most games we had at least 4 Junior players playing each week.

Rd 1 Riverside - 4/208 def Banyule - 3/147 We won this game mainly on the back of the 122 struck by James Dixon followed up by some tight bowing with the 3 wickets shared around.

Rd 2 Riverside - 6/340 drew Hurstbridge - 6/289 Batting first our large total was down to MMS with a great 138 assisted by Ben Ryan (55) Toby Hewitt (58) and Dennis Maley’s (41 n.o.) which he had to retire hurt after injuring his leg. Our bowling was steady with contributions from Chris Sullivan (2/29) and MMS (2/36) and a run out and young Will Hewett picked up his first senior wicket as well.

Rd 3 Riverside – 6/151 def by Bundoora Park – 7/167 We held this team to a reasonable total having 6 juniors in our team. Bowling first we had great returns from Jake Bohan (u/14 player) 2/11 along with Wes Mills (J) 2/20. We fell 16 runs short but again great efforts from MMS (68) Steve Gleeson (29)

Rd 4 Riverside – 8/243 def Research – 9/239 Again, bowling first Research batted their allotted 68 overs on our home ground of Greensborough Park with the outfield being quite quick we held them to a reasonable total with good bowling and fielding with the main wicket takers being MMS (3/25) & Steve Gleeson (3/41). Coming back the following week we got to their total off 58 overs with Paul Bohan (82) & Steve Gleeson (69 n.o.) and MMS chipping in with a (29) at the top of the order.

Rd 5 Riverside – 7/298 def Plenty – 280 Batting first on the small Simms Road ground we had a fantastic opening stand of 202 with MMS finishing on 134 with his batting partner Will Hewett (J) making 55. Then we lost 5/21 but late resistance got us to the 298 with Dennis Maley (20) and Robin Parsons finishing with 25 n.o. Coming back the following week we struggled to get early wickets but then got them at regular intervals with Aaron Rae (3/17) and MMS 2/24 being the main contributors but the run out of their captain by Mick Rowley finally turned the game our way.

Rd 6 Riverside – 4/156 def by Epping – 8/158 Having been put into bat we lost our first wicket in the first over and really struggled to get any momentum in our innings but a determined MMS (60) James Dixon (47) & Mick Rowley (27) got us to a competitive total. Our bowling was very tight and we dropped a few catches. The game went down to the last ball which unfortunately did not go our way. MMS (3/42) and Jake Bohan (J) (1/16) were the best of our bowlers.

Rd 7 Riverside – 4/110 def Lower Eltham – 8/109 This win was set up by some great bowling especially from our junior players – Noah Gleeson (4/24) Aaron Rae (2/14) & Jake Bohan (1/18). Our batters then went about knocking off the runs and this was done mainly with MMS making a fine 67 n.o.

Rd 8 Riverside – 8/151 def by Research – 6/153 With our gun opening batsman MMS falling for 3 it was left to the middle order to accumulate the runs and we had 6 batters who made between 21 – 33 with best being Mick Rowley (31) and Toby Hewett (32). Although we bowled well they had one batsman who held their innings together, our best bowler Noah Gleeson (1/1 off 3 overs) pulled up injured so it was left to our other bowlers who unfortunately couldn’t get that important breakthrough.

Rd 9 Riverside – 6/89 def by Hurstbridge – 8/188 Travelling out to Hurstbridge we put them in and we were hit by a Sub District player who took us to all parts of the ground, he made 131 out of 166 before we got him but the damage was done. The shining lights for us was Noah Gleeson (4/34) Wes Mills (0/9) and Connor Melville (1/25) all junior players. We then struggled to make impact a cameo from James Dixon with a quick fire 31 but we then batted the overs out to end a hard day.

Rd 10 – Lower Eltham couldn’t field a team so we won on forfeit

Rd 11 Riverside 1/125 def Epping 9/124 Playing against the 2nd team on the ladder and a game we had to win, we bowled first and held them to a good score of 124. Main wicket takers were Jake Bohan (2/12) Noah Gleeson (2/18) and Steve Gleeson (2/19). Having changed the batting line up (no MMS) we lost an early wicket but James Dixon (68 n.o) & Steve Gleeson (44 n.o.) plundered the attack to see us home in 25.3 overs.

Rd 12 Riverside – 3/105 def Bundoora Park – 9/103 Again another must win game – we bowled first with great results Steve Gleeson (4/20) Toby Hewett (2/14) Noah Gleeson (1/13) and Wes Mills (1/20). Again losing an early wicket before a fine partnership of 73 between MMS (55) and Mick Rowley (28) which were the back bone of the innings before two junior players Will Hewett (5 n.o) and Connor Melville (10 n.o) saw us home to get the points.

Semi Final 140 def by Bundoora Park 4/175 With higher grades getting into finals there were 3 players dropping down from F2 which changed our team slightly and Steve Gleeson lead the team for this game. Bowling first on a large ground we held them to about 2 runs per over up until tea but they were only 1 down. After tea saw us get a couple of more wickets and we probably gave them about 20 more runs than they should have got (Extras of 25 didn’t help). Wickets were shared between all the juniors with Wes Mills, Noah Gleeson, Connor Melville & Will Hewett getting 1 wicket each. There bowling was very accurate and we were facing the same low run rate and we were 2 down at tea. Straight after tea we lost our 3rd wicket. Then Steve Gleeson (48) started to take on the bowlers and had a 54 run partnership with MMS (49) but Steve injured his quad and had to have a runner. We then lost MMS and Steve tried to push the runs along but fell when we were about 50 runs short. The last few players (all juniors) tried to make runs but unfortunately we fell 35 runs short.

Wow how tight was the batting, Stevie G just knocked off MMS by 0.1 to win the award and his son Noah picked up the bowling award by beating his dad by 3 wickets. Noah’s efforts are to be congratulated as a u/16 player, playing in the seniors. MMS had a great season scoring 624 runs for G Grade and 951 runs for the club and picking up a handy 11 wickets at 16.45.

I would also like to thank the Captains from each grade for their continued help and support, and also Luke Rosbrook (tough gig being selector as well as a coach) and to D, F1, & F2 for making the finals and especially to F2 for making the Grand Final but unfortunately came up short.

Veterans

The Vets had a tough season this year, not notching up a win until the final round of the season and missing finals for the first time in, well forever…

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, we had 22 players play Vets this season, welcoming Tony Lander, Andrew Skerritt and Mark Clough to Riverside’s ranks. We also lucky enough to borrow a few fill-ins from the Seniors for their Vets debut in Mick Rowley and some bloke called Gibbs, while Mick Mansfield made a triumphant return wearing Paul Sinclair’s whites, successfully bowling 2 overs before sleeping through the entire next match 2 weeks later. We also continue to enjoy what is undoubtedly the premier post-game BBQ in the Vets competition.

Al Broughan was the deserving winner of the Gavan O’Connell Memorial Trophy for the Vets MVP, notching up 99 runs for the season at an average of 49.5. Al has been knocking on the door for the past few seasons and has improved noticeably, even at a Veterans age, wowing teammates and opponents alike with his power hitting.

I would like to personally thank Joe Fleming and Rick Bohan for taking the reins later this season when I was out injured. It is a comforting thought to know that I can leave the team safe in the hands of a man who can lead the sledging without fear of recrimination (he smashed it Joe – CHEAT!)

Despite the lack of success we all enjoyed the opportunity to get together, laugh at each other and play a little bit of cricket. Thanks to all the Vets representatives this season for helping out both on and off the field as well as just playing! Hopefully we see you all back next year for another crack.

Junior Coordinator’s Report

Once again the junior club had another successful season. In total we had 170 junior registrations this season which is the highest amount for at least 10 plus seasons. This number included our first ever team of under 18’s as well as our largest group of Blast Program children. We fielded 7 competitive teams from Under 12’s to Under 18’s, 2 non- competitive under 10 teams as well as an extremely successful Master & Junior Blast Programs.

A club of this size does not run itself and a huge amount of work was put in by the Junior Committee. The Committee of Kristy Doyle, Toby Hewett, Paul Bohan, Damian Mills, Elliot Smale, Marty Anderson and Kylie Hannam are to be congratulated for their hard work for the season commencing back in June/July last year right up to the end of March for our virtual presentation night.

Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted in ensuring games were able to played each week, from setting up the grounds, scoring, cleaning up etc. The club would not be able operate without parent help.

Special mention to the work performed in ensuring the canteen is up and running each week. To Belinda, Lisa, Tash, Peta, Kristy, Kylie and all the others who assisted this year to make sure we had a canteen up and running every Friday night, thank you very much.

The club is determined to attract more girls playing cricket and a significant initiative this season was the running of two girls cricket skills session held at the Whatmough Park nets during the season. Both sessions attracted 20+ girls of different ages who showed great enthusiasm and willingness to improve. A special highlight was the attendance of Australian and Melbourne Stars player Ellyse Villani at the second session. Massive thank you to Kristy Doyle who organised these sessions and to Karen & Kate Doyle, Frances & Kathryn Ennor, Scott Gibbs and others for imparting their cricket expertise.

The Master and Junior Blast Programs had enormous growth on last season with 73 registered players attending Whatmough Park each and every Sunday through the year. The amount of work Elliot Smale put into the programs cannot be underestimated. His organisation skills as well as the huge parent and supporter help contribute to arguably the best program within the state.

The senior section of the club has an enormous task to run one of the largest clubs within the local area and thanks to Tim Money and his Committee for all of their support during the season. Tim puts in an extraordinary amount of work during the season and we are very lucky to have him as President. This season we had 8 players under the age of 16 play senior games during the year which is an important transition step.

On the field we had mixed success with only 1 team making the semis with the Under 16’s teal falling in the semi final. We had a number of teams who played in higher grades than what they possibly should have been and importantly they improved as the season went along.

Although we all enjoy being involved in finals I must re-iterate that playing cricket at Riverside is not about playing to win grand finals, we are a club that is about children receiving equal opportunity to participate in every aspect of the game. The Riverside philosophy is that we will pursue equal participation rather than pursue winning at all costs. We know that this is not the same philosophy that some other clubs have but over the long term Riverside’s approach works and ensures that all children will enjoy their cricket and return to play at our club year after year.

Under 18’s This was the first time we have entered a team in the under 18 competition with Matt Newell putting his hand up to organize and manage the team. Whilst injury and work commitments had an impact on player numbers through the season it was noticeable that all the players enjoyed themselves each Friday night.

Under 16s Joel Atkinson has the less than envious role in managing 15 players in the under 16 team this season with only 3 top age players. Joel handled the task without any complaints and made sure each player had an opportunity with bat and ball which was not always the case for other teams in the grade.

The U16s had 3 players completing their final year of cricket at Riverside – we wish the following players all the success in the future – Wes Mills, Bronson Neave and Ben Hunter

Under 14s All good plans didn’t eventuate with the under 14’s this season with 22 players registered players at the start of the season making 2 even teams, however with season ending injuries for two players as well as other injuries during the season, player numbers each week were impacted. Coaches Shaun O’Connor and Matt McMaster-Smith performed great jobs in sometimes trying conditions.

Under 12s This season we fielded three teams in the under 12’s with 2 of these teams in their first season of competitive cricket. The bottom two teams had some very indifferent grading and we thank them for putting in some great performances despite playing against bigger and stronger opposition. Matt Doyle, Marty Anderson and Andrew Skerritt did a great a great job in coaching all players through the season to see them all improve and keen to play on.

Under 10 Modified Once again the club was able to field two Modified teams this season with a big thank you to coaches Martyn Anderson and Nick Bowman. The Modified teams are an important step for the club as a stepping stone to competitive cricket and an introduction for the parents to Riverside cricket club. Well done to the all the players in the Modified teams they should do very well when they move into competitive cricket next year.

It was a shame the season could not have ended with our traditional Presentation Night to personally thank all our volunteers and to congratulate all our trophy winners. Special congratulations to Jack Atkinson who won the coveted Kevin Morrissey award. Jack had an outstanding season with our under 16’s and is a well deserving winner of the award.

After 5 years as the junior coordinator I am pleased to announce that Kristy Doyle will take over the role next season. In a very short time Kristy has shown great enthusiasm across all parts of the junior club and will be a tremendous leader over the next few/many years.

It would be remiss not to additionally thank Toby Hewett, Damian Mills and Paul Bohan for all their support over the last few years on the Junior Committee. Their work ethic, knowledge and support are first class and I could not have done this role without them.

I also take the opportunity to thank Belinda for all her support. As many know it can be difficult to manage multiple children playing across different age groups for trainings and match days each week. Belinda has successfully done this on a Wednesday/Friday night for the last 10 years (one year to go!!!). Belinda has also done a tremendous job working in the canteen when playing at home and supporting all functions. Thanks B.

I hope everyone enjoyed the year and on behalf of the junior committee I look forward to seeing everyone back at the club next season

Under 18 - Teal

The U18’s was an interesting and enjoyable season for me as I believe it was for the boys that played as well. The banter between the boys on and off the field was good to hear and at times very funny. I had umpires and opposition coaches tell me the same and that they enjoyed the spirit in which the games were played. Struggling to get 11 players to play each week we ended up playing with less players which I believe cost us a finals appearance, it was just too hard to fill gaps in the field in some of those games. It was a good learning curve for the boys though, especially for our captain Ryan Gleeson, for he had to set the field and as a spin bowler and for Aidan Newell as a spin bowler. If you have players in the deep it’s easy to take singles and if the field is up the big shots are less risky. Both boys bowled well in these situations and I thought Ryan set some pretty good fields considering the lack of fielders. I really enjoyed my role with the team, I wouldn’t say I coached them, I was more of a manager/umpire/scorer. The boys trained with the senior group which I thought would be enough cricket for them, training Tuesday and Thursday and playing Friday and Saturday.

The season started with 15 teams in U18’s blue and after losing the first 3 games the grade was split in two and we were put into the Teal grade with 7 other teams. We managed to win 3 games in Teal, had 1 draw and 2 losses. Our first win was a one day game against Epping after the first week was washed out. Batting first we made 6/105 with 4 of our batsmen making scores in the 20’s. We managed to keep Epping to 5/102 with Jacob Bowden taking 3/13 off his 4 overs. This was the only game that we had 11 players. Our second win was a very well fought out home game playing with only 8 players and taking on top team Dennis and without our captain Ryan Gleeson as he was injured. Losing the toss and bowling first we only took 2 wickets and managed to keep them to 122. Tom Hewett got us off to a great start making 53 ret. as our stand in captain. Matt Brennan made 20 with others chipping in and finished our 20 overs on 5/127. Our third win was in the last round against Montmorency. With both teams unable to make finals they just went out there to play and have some fun. Mont won the toss and batted first and were bowled out for 95 with Josh Rae taking 4/17 off 3.4 overs and Matt Brennan 3/12 off 4. Batting we lost the early wicket of Jacob Bowden which brought R. Gleeson (46 N.O.) out to join T. Hewett (47) at the crease. We passed their total after 13 overs and that was the end of season 2019/20 for Riverside.

The batting award was closely contested between three players, Tom Hewett, Matt Brennan and the winner Ryan Gleeson with 175 runs @ 35 with a top score of 60. Ryan batted well in most games coming in at number 3 and building good partnerships with those around him. Tom did a fantastic job as our opening batsman. On most occasions he had a different partner to work with at the top of the order and he and Ryan had some good partnerships throughout the season. Matt batted consistently scoring in the 20’s and 30’s often batting with either Tom or Ryan. All the other boys had games where they pitched in or hung around or took on the job of opening even though it probably didn’t suit them.

The bowling award was won by Matt Brennan taking 9 wickets at an average of 15. We had some good bowling over the course of the season from Jacob Bowden (best 3/13 off 4), Josh Rae (best 4/17 off 3.4), Luke Jurkovic (best 3/25 off 4) and others. Matt took wickets more consistently and bowled at good pace and a length that made it hard for most batsmen to score easily despite a lack of fielders.

For the U18’s I was asked to give votes for an MVP award and decided to give 8 votes per game broken up into the 3 disciplines, batting, bowling with a minimum of 1 vote given in each field. As there were no standout fielding moments such as an individual player being involved in 3-4 wickets, whether it be runouts, catches or stumpings or a combination the majority of votes went to batting and bowling. The final result was that Matt Brennan won the MVP award with 14 votes over Ryan Gleeson with 9 votes. Well done to Matt Brennan.

Under 16 Teal

Our under 16’s had a great season culminating in the boys making the semi-final. All the boys contributed throughout the season with a real even spread of performances that made this season very enjoyable. What stood out to me throughout the season was how the boys were all happy to be a part of a team and how they also enjoyed each other’s company and had a lot of fun but also played some great cricket!

Throughout the year we had some great team and individual performances with Noah Gleeson taking 6-23 being a highlight.

Individually several boys played representative cricket with Nick Brennan playing for the U/14 Falcons in the YPL and Tom Robinson and Jack Atkinson playing U/15 Hatch shield.

Also, well done to Wes Mills who made the squad for the Riverside senior’s team of the year, well done mate! Several boys also played seniors for Riverside this year - Noah Gleeson, Wes Mills, Aaron Rae, Will Hewett, Ollie Gleeson and Nick Brennan, a great effort from the boys and hopefully they can keep it going next season!

Personally, I would like to thank several people for their help this season, Steve Gleeson, Damien Mills and Toby Hewett for all the help behind the scenes, Paul Gleeson for offering to help whenever it was needed and especially to Brook Atkinson for all his work as team manager and basically full time scorer, all your help was definitely appreciated!

Lastly, I would like to thank all the boys for making this season such a fun and enjoyable year, they really are a great bunch of boys and it was a pleasure to watch them in action this year, well done!

Under 14 Blue I hope everyone is well and keeping safe.

Last night would have been the boys junior cricket presentation. The clubs awards are on the Riverside Team app for everyone to view. I would just like to congratulate first of all the whole team on a great year, and considering the amount of injuries we suffered, the boys managed to remain competitive in the top grade. I’ve done my best to mention quickly all of the boys and hopefully put a smile on their faces during these difficult times (or get them of the xbox for a minute ).

If you aren’t aware the individual trophy winners for the team are as follows;

Batting award - Harley Jackson 146 Runs with a batting average of 36.50 Well done Harley on a great season. Harley opened the batting most weeks and was very consistent in his performance which helped the side get off to a good start most games. Harley posted his best score of 36 against easily the best team in Epping. Harley has a fantastic attitude and is always willing to work on his game. Harley was also our Keeper and Captained most weeks. He showed great leadership and was a pleasure to coach

Bowling award- Jake Bohan , 10 wickets @ 13.80 Well done Jake on a great season also. Jake showed everyone how much he has improved with the ball this year. His ability to bowl fast and swing the ball was fantastic to see. Jake opened the bowling most weeks and with his pace and swing soon began to develop his own reputation of someone to look out for. Jake is also a very handy middle order batsman and fantastic in the field. Well done again Jake.

Coaches award – Riley Omerod Riley was an absolute delight to coach. Riley was the last one most nights to finish bowling to the boys and was always happy to help with any duties asked. That is not why I am giving this award to Riley though. Riley puts in a lot of hard work and cares about his team mates and always wants his team to be competitive. He is a true sportsman! Riley was one of the most consistent cricketers in our team with both bat & ball and was always exciting to watch in the field. His attitude towards his teammates and opposition peers is a real asset and shows true leadership qualities. Thank you and well done Riley.

I will also like to mention the other boys and their achievements this year.

Dylan Johnson- I had the pleasure to see Dylan play for only one game. Dylan suffered a back injury which kept him out for the season and I know how disappointed he was not being able to play with his mates. However, I applaud you Dylan for making the effort to come each week and support your team mates. Dylan is a talented cricketer. Good luck mate in the under 16’s. I hope you smash ‘em for 6!

George Coates- George was also injured for most of the season and also showed great sportsmanship by supporting our team each game. George like Dylan was a huge loss to our side and his efforts with bat and ball when he returned from injury highlighted how important he was to the side, The youngest boy in our side but probably the cleanest striker of the ball. I look forward to watching you play next year George.

A huge thankyou to Logan O’Brien and his parents for supporting the club an allowing Logan to play most Fridays. Logan proved himself to be a valuable asset with bat and ball and was especially dangerous in the field. The boys loved having Logan play and they seemed to walk a bit taller with his presence. Thanks again and well done Logan,

Rohan McRae – One of the quietest boys in our team, and a joy to Coach. Rohan also had a great year with the bat. Finishing with 95 runs and a very healthy average of 45. Rohan was one of my go to bowlers when we were in trouble and managed to bowl consistent lines and very efficient. Fantastic figures of 5/22 against Banyule. Great work Rohan. Eli Kitchen- Eli come up from the 12s last year and is an absolute joy to coach. Eli has a fantastic attitude always wanting to do well. Eli like George and Dylan missed a lot of games due to injury.

Eli has great skills with both bat and ball. Eli’s best batting performance was 31 against Banyule. I look forward to also watching you also do well next season.

Dylan Kirby- Our opening Bowler who I’ve known now for quite a while. Dylan loves his cricket and is always smiling. He tried very hard this season to improve his batting and with time he will develop into a great cricketer. Dylan is a true competitor, never giving up and always trying to keep his teammates in the game. Dylan finished the season with his best figures of 4/11 against Hurstbridge.

Liam Hannam – Liam was another boy this year who gave his all, and is always respectful to his team mates and coaches. I loved helping Liam develop and given time Liam will develop into a dangerous fast bowler. Liam also showed his team mates towards the end of the season that he also has the ability to be a good batsman.

Liam O’Connor - Always hard coaching your own son. He probably bowled the least amount of overs and I threw him up the top of the batting order each week to take on the opening bowlers. Liam showed great courage and has a very nice technique that well help him develop into a nice batsman in the future. Liam and Harley shared the highest opening stance of 60 against Epping.

Nick Duckworth- Nick tried hard throughout the season. Nick worked with me a lot on his bowling, in particular, and finished with season best figures of 2/6. I hope Nick continues his Cricket in the Northern Territory. Good luck Nick with the move and hope you are doing well.

Thank you to Paul Bohan, Sam Coates for assisting me at training and game day. Thank you also to Damian Hannam for doing such a great job as Team Manager.

Well done also to Matt McMaster-smith and his team in Yellow. The boys also had a great season and like us struggled with numbers some weeks. Unlucky to not play finals after a strong finish to the season.

Last by not least a big thankyou to all the parents for your support throughout the season.

Keep safe and see you all soon hopefully!

Shaun O’Connor

Under 14 Yellow

First of all I would like to thank the junior committee for giving me the opportunity to coach the Under 14 yellow team and was a fun and enjoyable year in some tough times brought about by injuries to players from both Under 14 teams. I believe the committee made the right choice in appointing me after finally realising that the previous coach wasn’t up to the standard of myself (sorry Gibbo, just a joke). In all seriously the team performed very well this past season winning four games and drawing one and finishing in fifth spot, just one game outside the four. A big improvement on the previous season when they tried hard but failed to win a game (sorry Gibbo, another dig).

Now I must give Gibbo some credit. We had 9 players return from the previous season to once again play under 14 cricket. As everyone will already know that Gibbo is a great coach and well regarded in the DVCA, his patience and commitment last season in trying circumstances had to be applauded and for all of the players to return again this season is a credit to you. Thanks Gibbo.

The team added Aidan Harrison and Hayden Allan (from the under 12’s). We also had help from Archie Frost, who played under 10 modified this season, but filled in for one game and ended up playing the last 5 games with the team and performed at a great standard. Thank-you Archie and well played.

Thanks to my team manager Craig Allan for everything you have done this season and also the other parents that helped score or umpired throughout the year. Thanks again.

The batting award went to Will Ryan, who opened the batting most games and performed at a high level against some good bowling from the opposition. Will finished with 179 runs at an average of 35.80 with a top score of 62 not out. He also took 7 wickets.

The bowling award went to Cooper Frost. To bowl leggies at a young age can be hard to control but Cooper’s ability to land most of his deliveries in dangerous areas makes him hard to face. Cooper finished with 10 wickets at an average of 13.10 with best figures being 4/17. He also made 58 runs with a top score of 36.

The coaches award went to Adam Hillman. Adam was one of the first players at each training and one of the first if not the first to be there on game day. That shows his commitment to the team and also myself. Well done Adam. Adam also made 32 runs for season and took 5 wickets.

Other players in the team were • Mitch McMaster-Smith, who on most occasions opened the bowling and finished with 8 wickets as well as making 73 runs with a top score of 23. • Josh Lackas is a hard hitting middle order batsman and produced some good innings during the season. He finished with 140 runs at a healthy average of 35.00. He also took 3 wickets. • Liam Smith, one of our big improvers for the season. Keep listening to your coaches and further improvement will continue. • Joel Martin, another of our big improves this season, including a top score of 15 as well as taking a couple of wickets. • Hayden Allan, was the team’s keeper as well as captain on most occasions, and also tried his hand at bowling in a few games. Hayden scored 196 runs for the season with an average of 32.67 and included a top score of 74 against the eventual premiers Lower Plenty. • Evan Lock, a popular member of team, also improved on his previous seasons. Keep practising Evan, you will make a good cricketer. • Aidan Ganter, is a genuine all-rounder and finished with 45 runs and 7 wickets. Aidan also helped out in the under 14 blue team. • Aidan Harrison, only played 7 games due to a broken wrist last in the season. He finished with 43 runs with a top score of 20 as well as taking 6 wickets.

Under 12 – Teal

Under 12 Teal team, what a fantastic group of young players to coach. The enthusiasm and energy you all bring to training and game day is inspiring. The willingness to listen (mostly  ) and the efforts you all put in from the start of the season until the last game brought about some fantastic improvements individually and as a team.

With the majority of the team having moved from Under 12 Yellow (second lowest grade) to this year playing in Under 12 Teal, the second highest grade with 3 grades in between, the step up in standard was significant but fair for this group of players. As a team in a grade with 8 teams, we lost the least amount of wickets for the season when compared with every other team in our grade. During the first 5 rounds we were bowled out 4 out of the 5 games. With a greater emphasis placed on defending the stumps and hitting the ball along the ground during training and applying this on game day, significant improvements were seen. During the remaining 4 games, 3 of which against teams who finished higher on the ladder, our team did not get bowled out once. Each batsman from our team either retiring or being not out at least once. While not always relating to scoreboard results the tightening up of batting techniques will hold all the players in good stead moving forward.

As a bowling and fielding team the teams results were equally as impressive, our team conceding the second fewest amount of runs for the season while taking the third most amount of wickets. At the start of the season the team looked like a bunch of kids dressed in whites standing in the field. By the Christmas break they looked like a team of cricketers, walking in the bowler, ready for the ball to come to them and diving and sliding after the ball. The chat in field was first class since round 1  the excitement and celebration of each other’s success was a pleasure to watch. The spirit shown to opposition teams and players was most pleasing to see with retiring or outgoing batsman often receiving words of encouragement or recognition for their efforts. If this is consistent with young players at Riverside then our club will be in great hands in the future.

Archie, you were the leader of our bowling attack. Always challenging the batters with consistent up and out swing bowling at good pace. Your persistence with the ball throughout the season was terrific, being well rewarded with wickets as the season progressed. A fantastic day of bowling against Plenty where you took 5/5 was a special moment and one you should be very proud of. It is not often you have the chance to take 5fa! Many more to come I'm sure.

Lacho, with the bat, ball or behind the stumps you were always involved and hard to keep out of the game. Your improvements throughout the season with bat, ball and gloves was terrific. Your innings of 21 against Rosanna, your highest score if I'm not wrong, was proof to yourself of your skill with bat. Your determination at training and willingness to listen, lead to great improvement. Always competing with ball in hand at training your bowling consistency improved while starting to send down the ball with good pace and bounce.

Max H, leg spin is hardest of all cricket skills and thanks to you we had the best leggie in the 12 Teal comp. Keep ripping that ball when you bowl, the most important part of bowling spin is to spin it! Your consistency improved greatly as the season progressed and as you keep bowling, more wickets will come your way. With the bat your

determination to not let the bowler get you out was a great example to all, being not out in 7 of your 9 innings shows your defence is like a wall.

Max V, Mr consistent! Your efforts throughout the season are something to be proud of. Every training session you ran in hard to bowl from ball one until the end. Your willingness to work on your batting technique saw great improvements throughout the season, well done! In the field you are constant voice always encouraging your teammates to get behind one and other, believing Riverside can win no matter the situation. These are the reasons I think you are well deserving of the coaches award this season.

Ned, the energy you bring to the team lifts everyone. Your batting when you attack the bowling and look to score makes you a hard opponent to bowl to and sets the team up for success. The out swing bowling you brought to team was great and the chat in the field entertaining. Consistently encouraging your teammates and recognising their achievements, you are a great team mate.

Oscar, your inswing bowling was a challenge for opposition batters. Your efforts at training with the ball were rewarded with consistent results on game day. With the bat you continue to tighten your technique and I'm sure big scores are not far away. Your efforts in the field were great to watch and sliding to stop and pick up the ball might be something you'll have to teach me!

Sam H, your constancy with your bowling is fantastic! You are constantly in and around the off stump when bowling and regularly featuring amongst the wicket takers. As the season progressed and you started following through the crease with your bowling you picked up pace and will be a handful for batsman next season. With bat you continue to improve, the technique work practiced at training throughout the season saw great improvements on game day.

Sam L, a regular wicket taker whose efforts could not be questioned. Despite an interrupted season with holidays you always competed on the field, weather with bat, ball or fielding you gave 100%. Your innings against Old Paradians where you scored your highest score and hit a couple of big fours was a great achievement. Congratulations on contributing in your first season of cricket.

Xavier O, an all rounder who can contribute with bat or ball. When the rhythm with your bowling is on you are one of the quickest best bowlers going around and you will be a handful for opposition batters in the future. Always bringing a great energy to training and game day it is in the field where you lead by example. Your throwing strength is testament to the amount of throwing practice you have done and something your teammates look up to.

Xavier R, you had a great season with bat. With two scores of 44 it can be seen how you can turn a game with ability to keep good ball out and score runs. Remain positive with bat and you will have plenty of more runs come your way. Switching to left arm leggies saw you turn your bowling season around. While bowling your pace was economical, it didn't bring about the wickets you wanted. The leggies however opened the flood gates!

Zac, it's often said that the wicket keeper is the heartbeat of cricket team, this could not be more truer for you. The energy you bring to training and game day lifts your teammates. Do not change this! Demanding to remove a backstop and play a fine leg instead was sign of great confidence. Keep being attacking with your batting, your innings against Epping in the one dayer was fantastic and saw us nearly get over the line. I look forward to seeing the reverse sweep more often next season!

Parents, thanks to everyone who assisted this season with training, game day, scoring, driving to Mernda in the rain (and back again) and being there with your families each week to support the boys as they stepped out on to the park. They are a fantastic bunch of boys to coach which is a testament to their families.

Look forward to seeing you all at Riverside next season.

Under 12 – Red A The boys had a season in two halves in terms of win/ loss. Some great wins early in the season with a smaller squad that had a great mix of fast and spin bowling coupled with solid batting right through the line-up. When the team went up a level, they did struggle with the pace of the opposition bowling and that led to some lower scores. The bowling and fielding however was always the strength of the team.

The team started to learn how to bat time and place value on their wickets which helped ensure everyone got a bat in each game. They will be a better team in 20/21 after playing against upper age players. The team was very supportive of each other throughout the season, always encouraging each other no matter the skill level.

Standouts were Johar’s and Koby’s batting and bowling awards. Oscar Clough stuck to his leg spin all season and bowled some great but unlucky spells. All the boys showed much improvement over the season and were a pleasure to coach.

Leon Clough won the coaches trophy not just for a gutsy 43* which with Koby 29* guided the team to a great win but for his attitude. Leon is a great team man and always encouraged his team-mates no matter the situation.

Under 12 – Red C

Last year I coached an U10’s modified team, this season I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to coach many of the kids from last year’s U10’s team as they moved into U12’s for their first season of competitive cricket.

In addition to the kids from last season we also welcomed some new faces to not only Riverside Cricket Club but in some cases to cricket.

The tone for the season was to build on the fundamentals we learnt from last season and start to develop our skills in order to apply them to competitive cricket. This included bowling one side of the wicket, walking in with the bowler, backing up when batting and not trying to hit every ball for six!

Even though we only had two wins for the season I still considered it a very successful season. The kids all improved on where they were at the start of the season, which I believe is the main goal for junior cricket. In the last game of the year we had our second win for the season, what was so impressive in this game is that the kids started to implement the fundamentals of cricket without even realising it. They bowled the best for the season with the least amount of no balls, they backed up in the field and they started calling and running between the wickets the best of seen all season! Well done kids!

Congratulations to our trophy winners. Congratulations to Will Pope on winning the bowling average, Will took 9 wickets at an average of 7.44. Will opened the bowling for a number of games as we could count on his accurate tight bowling to get us away to a great start.

Congratulations to Anthony Rabak on winning the batting average. Anthony made 101 runs at an average of 20.20. we could always count on Anthony to come in a hit some quick runs and keep the score board moving. His highest score of 29 included a six!

Congratulations to Mikaela Bosco for winning the coaches award. I gave this award to Mikaela for a number of reasons, Mikaela was always willing to listen when we worked on her bowling whether it was her run up or technique. Mikaela’s batting defence is as solid as any senior cricketer and always played nice and straight. Mikaela would always put her hand up when I asked who wanted to open the batting when nearly everyone else didn’t want too.

Thank you to Vanessa Pope for taking on the role of team manager, without Vanessa’s help we would be turning up at the wrong ground or wouldn’t have anyone to score! Thanks Vanessa you made my job a lot easier!

Thanks to Jeff and Michael for assisting at every training session. Your help and assistance allowed us to get every bit out of training and allowed the kids to continue to improve. Without your help training would run even more over time than it normally did.

Thanks to all the parents for their assistance on game nights, training and supporting the club. I’ve been very lucky in my coaching so far to be assisted by a great group of parents and look forward to it continuing.

Congratulaitons to the kids for a great season, the season shouldn’t be measured by how many games we won but on how we developed and improved as a team and as individual players. In this regard I think we all excelled.

Thanks for a great season

Under 10 – Modified 1

I was lucky enough to coach one of the U10’s modified team this season as they begin their first steps to playing competitive cricket.

The boys transitioned extremely well from the master blaster program into the modified version of competitive cricket. Well done to Elliot Smale for running such a successful blaster program that allows our kids to gain the necessary skills to be able to compete from game one in U10’s.

What stood out to me the most this season was the boys cricket skills. Every boy in our team could bowl correctly and with a straight arm, most other teams had several kids who would throw the ball. The boys batting, fielding and running between the wickets all improved throughout the season and it was great to see how much they developed the finer points of the game from the start of the season to the end.

Even though it is a non-competitive grade the boys did go through the season undefeated which is a great result and is a wonderful acknowledge of their improvement and development as players.

A successful and enjoyable season wouldn’t be possible without the help of our volunteers and parents. A special thank you to Dave Rowley for taking on the role of team manager and also to Andrea Rabak for filling in for Dave when he was away.

Thank you to Elliot Smale, Trent Wellington and Danny Rabak for assistance at training with drills, net sessions and fielding. Without your help training wouldn’t run as smooth or allow the kids to further develop their skills.

Thank you to all the parents for their assistance in setting up the grounds (special thanks to Joseph who always collected the cones!), scoring and getting the kids there on time.

Congratulations to Oscar Doyle who took a hat trick against Macleod during the season. Hat tricks are a difficult accomplishment in cricket so well done Oscar (although this is Oscar’s third hat trick so he does make it look easy!!) Oscar finished with 5/4 for the game!

Well done to Paxton, Erik and Josh who all played a game or two in the under 12’s and Oscar who played all games in the under 12’s. To play against kids 2 – 3 years older than you is a great achievement.

Thanks boys for a great season, looking forward to everyone coming back next season and continue working on improving their cricket.

Thanks, Martyn Anderson

Under 10 – Modified 2

A first for all of us, myself as coach and the kids in big team whites.

The team came together from various schools, but all gelled as mates throughout the season. The highlight being a hot Monday night training session substituted for a pool party and BBQ with parents for everyone to get to know each other.

The improvement over the year was fantastic from shy stagnant kids to players encouraging and backing each other in the field. They found their voices and confidence which to me was my highlight.

Batting and bowling improved over the year with a focus on playing straight and running between the wickets, their concentration at bowling at the stumps was a big improver especially noticeable in the last couple of games.

Overall the kids represented Riverside cricket club respectfully and played as a team, every player had their turn and every player had their moment to shine.

Blast Programs

The 2019-20 Junior and Master Blast season kicked off in great fashion with perfect weather and fantastic numbers of girls and boys. This season we saw both programs have an increase in numbers with the Junior Blast program rising from 12 to 42 and the Master Blaster program going from 24 to 30. Each week I got to work with amazing, eager kids and it was awesome to see them develop and enjoy their cricket.

This year we changed a couple of things with our Junior and Master Blast program, most notably was the fact that we had both programs running each week at Riverside on a Sunday morning. It was fantastic to see so many budding young cricketers and their families down at Riverside each week.

We were so amazingly fortunate this season to have some of our Junior and Master Blasters take part in the on-ground entertainment during the lunchtime break at the MCG on Boxing Day, as well as having a couple take part in the Opening Ceremony.

I would like to thank all the guys from the senior club who came down on a Sunday morning and helped me run activities for the kids, your assistance was invaluable. To get that level support shows what a great club we have.

A special thanks to Jeff Morgan who would come down and help each week. An amazing display of club spirit from a guy who had no family members taking part but answered the call I put out at the start of the season looking for help.

Thanks also to Kym who would come down on a Sunday morning and open the canteen ensuring the kids and the families were able to get a cold drink, a snag in bread or on a hot morning a zooper dooper.

Thanks also goes to the dads that helped with Junior Blast each week. To Marty, Tom, Ged, Rick, Liam and to all the other who helped that I haven’t named thank you.

We were lucky enough again to have families from Panton Hill come and join us on Sunday morning to play Master Blasters, to Ray and the guys from Panton Hill a big thanks. Unfortunately with so many Junior Blasters this season I wasn’t able to spend much time with our Master Blasters. A massive thank you to Shane, Brent, Bhushan, Chris and Paul who ran the Master Blast games each week.

We had a great season at Riverside Cricket Blast with big numbers and lots of people willing to help and hopefully we see more of the same next season.

Finally, a big thanks to my boys and my wife Kristi. Whether it’s was helping in the canteen or helping me pack up at the end, I couldn’t have done the job without them.

Thanks Elliot.

NICK ELLKS 350 GAMES Congratulations to Nick Ellks who became just the 6th player in Riverside history to play 350 games of cricket for the club. Ellksy came through the junior ranks to begin playing senior cricket in 1987/88. After starting life as an unconventional leg-spin bowler, he turned himself into one of the most formidable batsmen in the competition. He went on to play 231 of his 349 games in A Grade (cap #150) including being club captain for two seasons. In his 349 matches Nick has scored 8,081 runs (3rd most in history) at an average of 26.5 scoring 8 hundreds and 34 fifties with a highest score of 136 not out. He has won seven batting trophies with three of these in A Grade. Whilst often under-bowled, Nick has also taken 115 wickets at an average of 19.2 with best bowling of 4/3. Nick is a Jim Fitzpatrick Medallist (best Riverside player in A Grade 1999/2000), a President’s Trophy winner (1990/91) and a David Hyland Trophy winner (best clubman 2006/07). Along with his on-field contribution to Riverside, Nick’s off-field contribution has been just as impressive. Nick has been on the committee for a total of 14 seasons including three as president. Nick continues to co-ordinate club functions and is a mentor to his son Harry and the younger senior cricketers. Whilst Nick’s statistics are impressive over 32 seasons, he is more than the numbers. A great clubman, a fantastic cricket player but most of all a friend to many. Well done to Ellksy on a fantastic milestone.

MATT NEWELL 300 GAMES Well done to Matt Newell who became just the 15th player to play 300 games for Riverside when he ran out as captain of F2 during the season. Matt’s started playing senior cricket in 1988/89 following in the footsteps of his father Phil and his brothers Greg, Mick, Sean, Paul and later Danny. Playing mainly as a leg-spinning all-rounder, Matt managed 1 A Grade game (cap #170) in 1996/97 but did not manage a bat or a bowl! Matt is now in his 31st season of cricket at Riverside and has played from our 1st XI all the way down to our 6th XI as well as making a few appearances in the Veterans. Matt has been a reliable batsman over the years, scoring 4,679 runs at an average of 20.7 with a highest score of 90, scoring 17 fifties. Matt has also been a very good leg-spinner, taking 291 wickets at an average of 20.5 with best bowling of 6/9 with three 5-wicket hauls. Matt is a fantastic slip fielder and someone the captain can always turn to whether that be with bat or ball. As well as playing, Matt has also been the captain of various sides through the years, has been on the committee for six seasons and coached his son Aidan in the juniors for 6 seasons, including two premierships. The Newell name is one which has been a part of Riverside’s history for a very long time so well done to Matt on a tremendous achievement.

ELLIOT SMALE BREAKS OVERALL CLUB RUNS RECORD On a historic weekend for the club, Elliot Smale broke the record for the highest number of runs scored in the history of the club which had been held by Phil Newell for over 30 years. Well done to Elliot on a fantastic achievement. In making 100 on Saturday against Macleod, Elliot also moved past Russell Grubb on the list of century makers with Saturday’s being his 11th hundred. MATT MCMASTER-SMITH BREAKS CLUB SEASON RUNS RECORD

Matt McMaster-Smith broke the seasons run record this year scoring 856 runs in F2 and G2. Once you include 5 games within the Vets, the total amount comes to 951 runs – an extraordinary consistently high scoring season.
