ANNUAL 2018 / 2019 REPORT

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Season 2018/2019 saw St Pats field 4 Master Blaster teams, 13 junior teams and 10 senior teams. Collectively this represents nearly 450 players in the Club.

There were further changes to both junior and seniors’ formats. One would say with mixed results. The Club will continue to work with both Associations to ensure that the game remains appealing to all ages and skill level.

Whilst each junior team had a coach and manager this season and each senior team had a manager, the Club desperately needs more people to join the committee to assist with either the Master Blaster, Juniors or Seniors programs.

We also want to explore the feasibility of improving the net facility with steps from the carpark and general improvement to seating and access. However, we need people to assist in getting quotes, grants etc.

The Club was again supported by our friends at the Tradies and we thank them for their continued support.

Adam Young

Hope everyone enjoys their winter activities and look forward to seeing you back with St Pats in the 2019/2020 season.

St. Patrick’s Club remains in a strong financial position after the 2018-19 season with a season profit of just under $9,000.00, this is a very good result with increases in registration & shirt sale on the Income side, on expenditure side, Association fees increased but we didn’t buy any shirts (saving of $9,900.00 on previous year) Unfortunately we have no “Premiership Team expenses” this year, so the only outstanding amounts that will come into next years expenses are AGM & Annual report expenses. Both income & expenditure are down this season due to decreases in seniors, girls & junior teams.

Page 4 of 55 Vale Jim Lynch (Life Member) February 2019

One of our beloved Life members passed away February 2019. Jim Lynch was instrumental in making St Pats what it is today. Jim was passionate about junior cricket in the Shire and was not only life member of St Pats, he was life member of SSJCA and Patron and Life member of the Umpires Association. Jim had attended the last 47 junior presentation days.

From St Patrick's 50th year book

Jim Lynch moved from committeeman to become the 6th chairman of St. Patrick's boys' cricket for the 1976/77 season. We are all aware that in any group, there are mixtures of the individual personalities including the straight-man. For those of us involved in cricket in the Sutherland Shire, let there be no doubt, Jim is the straight-man. What you see is what you get, it's straight down the line. No ifs or buts, just a fair dinkum approach to the matters at hand.

For some 37 years now, Jim has been extremely hard working, uncompromising, a stickler for the rules and regulations at hand, whether it be our St. Pats Club; the Association (boys or men), umpires, coaching or managing teams. During his 2 terms as cricket Chairman, 1976/77 to 1977/78 and then again in 1982/83, 41 teams with 467 players played in our club teams.

So good was Jim as a club administrator, that the boy's Association Secretary head hunted Jim to become Assistant Secretary. In addition to his club duties, you can measure his capacity to work hard for boy cricketers in the shire as he combined Association commitments as well. After 2 years in that Association role, Jim accepted the role of Competition Secretary. His involvement covered 2 periods, 1977/78 to 1981/82 (5 years) and 3 more years from 1985/86 to 1987/88. The workload in this role was almost equal to the Secretary’s role, lots of time involved, great attention to detail, accurate recording and those involved had to toe the line.

Following his decision to ease back, i.e. no official role in club or Association, Jim moved into the umpires ranks. A thankless role at the best of times but befitting a person like Jim. As we know, he's tough when the going gets tough.

Life Memberships to the Boys Association in 1981 and to St. Patrick's Cricket Club are recognition of the wonderful contribution made by one Jim Lynch. Jim was awarded the Australia 2000 Sports Medal for services to Cricket in 2000.

Could the game of cricket ever repay people of Jim's calibre...NEVER!

Cricketer of the Year - AUSTIN HEWETT r of the / 2017

The Senior Cricketer of the Year award is presented to an Under 16 player who has played with St Patricks Cricket Club for at least 3 seasons and is based on a combination of performance, contribution to the team, the Club and who abides by the Spirit of Cricket. the years the award has been presented to 16A player however an exception was made with this years recipient.

Austin Hewitt accomplishment with the bat this season was simply amazing: -

Batting aggregate of 689 which is the highest by a 16B player by more than 150 runs and was only 79 runs short of the all time record held by Kevin Tuite in 1981/82 season

Page 6 of 55 average of 114.8 which is also a record for a U16 player in any grade for the Club Highest score of 165 highest for a U16B player Scored 4 centuries in one season – equal highest with Kevin Tuite and is only the 3rd time in the history of the club that one player has scored 3 or more centuries in a season. Not bad for a boy who only scored 101 runs at an average of 12 in the previous season.

It was not only is performance with the bat that Austin made a contribution. As captain of the 16B team he led the team with enthusiasm both on the field and at training. His captaincy was astute and the way he made changes to bowling attack, field placements also contributed to the success on the field with the 16B finishing minor premiers.

Despite his own personal success Austin never lost sight of the importance of playing cricket in the right spirit. He led by example often shaking the opposition batsman hand upon dismissal especially when they had performed well. He was always polite and courteous to the game officials, opposition captain and coaching staff.

Austin has one more season of junior cricket and we wish him all the best next season and beyond.

Junior Cricketer of the Year - NICHOLAS PALERMO

There is no doubting Nicholas (Nick) Palermo’s passion for the game of cricket or the high standards he sets for himself each season.

Nick commenced playing for St Pats in season 2012/13 in the under 8’s. He quickly developed a liking for batting with shots square of the and driving through the covers. He also loved challenging the fielders, taking quick singles with his then batting partner Jeremy Benjamin. At this time, he also developed an early understanding of the value of being able to contribute to the team holistically with bowling economically and being sharp in the field.

The following year, Nick stepped up to 10A’s and eventually found himself as the opening bat in a star-studded line up. A position he has made his own and still finds

Page 8 of 55 himself in today in season 2018/19, working hard over the years in setting his team a total to defend or trying to put his team in with a chance of chasing a win.

In 6 of his 7 seasons with St Pats, Nick has been a consistent performer and has been able to pick up both batting and bowling awards. Nick has played at representative level with Sutherland for 3 seasons. In these three seasons, as opening and batter and off-spin bowler, the Sutherland President’s Team has placed 3rd, 1st and 1st. In season 2017/2018, Nick picked up SSJCA’s Harry Peters Trophy Individual Achievement Award for his contribution in the field, bat and ball and is currently the vice-captain of the team. Overall, Nick has amassed 1024 runs for St Pats, taken 44 , and has been highly energetic in the field contributing to numerous outs and catches over the years.

In 2017, Nick was picked up in the Targeted Sports Program for Cricket with Endeavour High School benefitting from playing against other sport schools.

Nick is a very talented all-round cricketer and loves to compete week in, week out. Over the past two seasons, Nick has developed into a quality off spinner and has become a reliable wicket taker and crafty bowler with his bounce and spin.

More importantly, Nick is learning what it takes to become a great leader with humility. His passion for the games shines through, has a great competitive spirit and a sharp cricket mind. I have really enjoyed watching Nick evolve into the player he is and the strong relationships he has formed with his teammates at St Pats. I look forward to seeing him and his teammates develop further in future years. It goes without saying, that Nick is deeply honoured with this accolade and I am grateful that the St Pats committee has bestowed this club honour with him.

Raff Palermo.

TEAM REPORTS - Juniors 2018/19

16 A

The 16A’s competition had only 5 teams this season. With only 8 games, it meant that every result was going to be very important. We knew the competition would be very even, and at the start of the season most of the other clubs had St Pats as the team to beat. We did boast a very strong team, with all of our boys being ‘second year’ players. Our recruitment manger had worked his magic in the off season with Ethan Deal (Bangor) and Justin Green (Bankstown), both NSW representative players, joining the club. We started the season confident of winning St Pats first 16A premiership since 1987/88. Round 1 Our season started with a bye, so we had a practice game to blow away the winter cobwebs. The highlight of the practice game was Jett Connell, who had come out of early retirement to play again this season, effortless cover drive for six. Welcome back Jett. Round 2 The first game of the season against Gymea Bay was a 25 over a side game. St Pats batted first and made a steady start. After being 2 for 36 after 13 overs we managed a very decent score of 107 with only 4 wickets down. Damian’s 50 off 54 balls was the highlight and was well supported by Richard who scored 43 off 70 balls. Our bowling was a little rusty but our was outstanding and we had Gymea in trouble. Ethan T bowled very well and conceded just 14 runs from his 5 overs. With Gymea needing 40 off 5 overs we looked home. However, a couple of interesting non- decisions and some lusty hitting by Gymea saw them win in the last over of the day. Close but not close enough. Round 3 Rain saw our round 3 game against Engadine transferred from Barden Ridge to Anzac Oval. However, Anzac Oval wicket was covered in oil (mower oil, not the black stuff) and was un-playable. This saw our

Page 15 of 55 second game also reduced to a 25 over a side game and transferred back to the Ridge. Further rain during the week meant the wicket was more than 60% underwater when the teams arrived to play the second week. Special mention must go to Justin and his mother who were at the ground at 9pm on Friday night trying to soak up the water. We were determined to have a game and after an hour of towelling we were able to start. It was hard work to score runs on a drenched outfield and a heavy ball, but we managed 70 from our 25 overs. Will and Richard were the two batsmen to reach double figures scoring 16 and 17 respectively. Engadine had the better of the conditions and quickly got themselves into a strong position. However four quick wickets gave our boys some hope, but we couldn’t finish them off and Engadine passed out score with 3 overs remaining. Richard took 2 for 13 from his 5 overs. Round 4 Our next game became very important, not only because we needed a win to get our season started, but because it was against Caringbah Sports, everyone loves to beat Caringbah. Another week of rain saw the outfield at Gwawley North Oval very wet and slow. It didn’t stop St Pats from winning the toss and batting. Richard and Jasper put on 75 for the first wicket to set up a competitive score of 154 off our 50 overs. Richard top scored with an aggressive 73, on a dry outfield it would have been a lot more. We were able to defend the total, however when Caringbah were 2 for 125 there were a few worried spectators. Jarrod and Justin combined to take 4 and 3 wickets respectively and bowl us to our first win of the season. Round 5 Our next game against Bangor was again played in wet conditions at the Ridge. By now we were very good at towelling the pitch dry before every game. We batted first and came up against some very good bowling. After losing two early wickets, Ethan T and Richard used all their powers of concentration to get us back in the game. Ethan T got out just when he was looking great and then Richard got a rough behind decision, one that the umpire later apologised for. Evan and James gave us some late order runs and got us to 108 all out. Bangor’s top order batted well, and was within 22 runs of victory with only two wickets down. Enter Jett Connell from the northern end. This was the bowling spell we had been waiting to see from the Big Bloke. Jett took 4 wickets in 9 balls and gave us a realistic chance of victory. Unfortunately we just didn’t have enough runs to play with and Bangor got the runs with 6 wickets down. Jett finished with 4 for 24 off 7 overs. Round 6 - Bye Round 7 The last game before the Christmas break became a ‘make or break’ game for us. We were up against the competition leaders on the turf wicket at Tonkin Oval. Gymea batted first and we kept Gymea to a very gettable total of all out for 200. The outfield was lightning fast and with our batting list we were confident we could chase down the score the following week. Jarod’s 3rd wicket brought up his 100th career wicket for St Pats. Unfortunately, heavy rain during the week meant the second week was washed out and the game drawn. Round 8 Round 8 against Engadine was another 25 overs a side game because of the Australia day holiday the previous week. Mathematically we could still make the grand final. To put it nicely, it wasn’t one of our better efforts. We were bowled out for 61, our highest scorer Austin “Run Machine” Hewitt from the 16B’s. There was a ray of hope when we had Engadine 2 for 3, but that was as close as we got and they passed our score with 4 overs remaining. It was a case of another 20 runs would have been nice. Round 9 Even though our chances to make the season Grand Final had passed, our next game against Caringbah was a must win for bragging rights. We bowled first and managed to dismiss Caringbah for 101. It was a very good bowling performance by the team led by Ethan D who took 2 for 16 off 10 overs. The second week saw us lose 3 early wickets before Damian and Will steadied the ship and at 3 for 52 we looked in good hands. Running between wickets is an important part of cricket and unfortunately that was to be our downfall this day. Two run outs in two balls started a batting collapse that saw us all out for 61. Damian was not out for a well batted 31. Round 10

Page 16 of 55 Bangor was our opponent for the last game. They were also out of contention for the Grand Final and the standard of cricket reflected the enthusiasm for the match. Between the two teams, there was only one player who managed to score double figures (they weren’t from St Pats). So, the season finished with just the one win and a lot of wet towels. Despite the rain, the cricket was of a very high standard. It was hard and it was tough cricket, but to our boys credit they were respectful to our opponents, played with a wonderful spirit and did themselves and the St Patricks Club proud. I would like to thanks all the parents for helping throughout the season, especially to get the wickets dry most mornings. For all the boys, this was their last season of junior cricket. Most had tasted success at some point during their time at the club and I’m certain most of the boys will go on to play cricket for many years to come. I would also like to thank the 16B players who supported us every week. Our numbers were stretched this year with injury and grade cricket commitments. Following is a brief assessment of each player, including their season and career averages: Will Duff – Will was finally able to have a pre-season that didn’t involve a plaster cast. He has a great understanding of the game and did a great job as captain and wicket keeper. He is an incredibly talented cricketer and I have loved watching Will play since under 10’s. 2018/19 – 37 runs @ 5.29: Career – 95 matches, 1,092 runs @ 16.54; 36 wickets @ 8.94 Richard Nolan – Richard had another good season with both bat and ball. He was the team’s leading runs scorer (4th overall) and the second highest wicket taker. Highlight of the year was his 73 against arch rivals Caringbah. Richard finishes his junior career as the 17th highest all time run scorer for St Patricks. 2018/19 – 171 runs @ 28.50; 9 wickets @ 18.22: Career – 99 matches, 1,604 runs @ 25.06; 85 wickets @ 16.35 Jasper Arthur – Jasper fearlessly opened the batting for us every week. This was not an easy task considering the quality of the bowling and the difficult conditions this year. Jasper’s highlight was his 21 runs against Caringbah. This included an opening stand of 75 that went a long way towards us winning the match. 2018/19 – 53 runs @ 8.83; 1 wicket @ 11.00: Career – 84 matches, 1,242 runs @ 19.11; 57 wickets @ 11.95 Ethan Tanner – Ethan is a genuine swing bowler. He bowls great line and length and caused plenty of problems for some of the best batsmen in the competition. Talented middle order batsmen who just found ways to get out this year. Ethan has been a great player for St Patricks over many seasons. 2018/19 – 12 runs @ 2; 3 wickets @ 47: Career – 99 matches, 1,064 runs @ 14.58; 57 wickets @ 15.16 Liam Van Ravenstein – Liam is a quiet, no fuss cricketer. Does his job with enthusiasm and is always the player to put the biggest effort in at training. Bowls very economically and a more than handy batsman who was only dismissed twice this season. 2018/19 – 20 runs @ 10: Career – 94 matches, 633 runs @ 9.59; 25 wickets @ 32.12 Damian Kleemann – Damian was one of the quickest bowlers in the 16A’s this year. At times bowled some unplayable deliveries, however struggled with the wet ball. Improved greatly with the bat. Started the season with 50 off only 54 balls in our first game and finished as the second highest run scorer. 2018/19 – 110 runs @ 18.33; 3 wickets @ 40: Career – 51 matches, 761 runs @ 16.91; 27 wickets @ 23.15 Jarrod Graham – Jarrod was our leading wicket taker this year and 5th overall. During the year he took his 100th wicket becoming the first St Patrick’s player to reach this career milestone since 2009/10 and only the second to do so since 2001/02. 2018/19 – 16 runs @ 3.2; 11 wickets @ 14.64: Career – 77 matches, 406 runs @ 8.28; 103 wickets @ 11.04 Jett Connell – It was great to see Jett back playing this year after taking 2 seasons off to see if he could crack into the Chelsea squad. Chelsea’s loss was our gain. Jett improved every game and by the end of the season was one of the competitions standout bowlers. His highlight was 4 for 24 against Bangor in round 5. 2018/19 – 11 runs @ 2.2; 5 wickets @ 16.4: Ethan Deal – Ethan is one of the most talented players in Shire and we welcomed him with open arms to the club this year. Ethan managed to make a few ‘starts’ this year but didn’t go on and make any big scores. We did discover he is quite a handy bowler and he bowled quite a few overs this year. It was good to have Ethan on our side for a change. 2018/19 – 28 runs @ 7; 2 wickets @ 24.5: Career 108 matches, 2,571 runs @ 29.89; 57 wickets @ 13.47 Justin Green – Justin came from the Bankstown competition, looking for a stronger standard. Justin is a great all-rounder who unfortunately was struck down with a number of injuries this year that limited him to just 4 games. His highlight was when he took 3 crucial wickets to bowl us to victory against Caringbah. 2018/19 – 5 runs @ 2.5; 3 wickets @ 7.33.

This season, the St Patrick’s U16C’s side had an average season. We welcomed several new players to the side, as well as the return of a few players from last season. Overall, the team managed only a single win, but the season was a fun one for the boys, nonetheless. I saw a lot of improvement from each of the boys, and hopefully this can continue into next season. Aaron Aaron was a new player in the side, and he gelled very well with the other players. Collectively known as ‘the Starfish’ due to his bowling action, Aaron’s batting and bowling improved throughout the year. I saw him gain confidence in both disciplines and was able to contribute to the team with both. In the field, Aaron was excellent, putting in maximum effort every time he stopped the ball. It was a pleasure coaching him this season. Adrian Adrian had a great season this year, especially with the ball. I saw a lot of improvement in Adrian this year and was pleased with his effort in the field. Adrian took the most catches throughout the season, which helped the team overall in improving their position in the game. Armaan Armaan improved significantly in all facets of the game. I was impressed at training at how he took my advice and the advice of his teammates on how to alter his techniques to make him a better cricketer. Armaan was a great asset on gameday too, with both his batting and his bowling helping the team. Fletcher Fletcher was a real pleasure to have in the side. He was always willing to listen to advice from both me and his teammates, and he used this advice to strengthen his batting, bowling, and fielding. Fletcher finished the season as the team’s leading wicket-taker thanks to his consistent line and length bowling during matches. Fletcher’s batting added vital runs to the side’s total throughout the season, and I could see him trying to play into areas that weren’t natural for him. Fletcher gelled with his new teammates too. I hope to see him back next season. James James, or ‘Jimmy’ to many of his teammates, reminded me of : his left-arm quick bowling was accurate, quick, and deadly, while his batting was hard-hitting and aggressive. James put in a lot of time and effort into improving both areas of his game, and he always did his

Page 18 of 55 best in the field. I could see James doing his best to make sure that his batting was helping out the team. James was an excellent team player. Jed Jed was a fantastic team player. He would always put the team first and was not afraid to give different things a go. He was not afraid to offer advice to the captain. Jed tried bowling pace and spin throughout the season, both producing vital wickets for the side. Jed’s batting improved a lot from last season, and it was always aggressive. He was a great member of the side. Leon Leon was another new member of the side. Leon was tasked with a variety of roles throughout the season including opening batsman, opening bowler, and wicketkeeper. He excelled in all the roles. Leon was one of three wicketkeepers in the side, and when he was given the gloves, he always put in 100% effort. Leon was constantly experimenting at training, and it paid dividends in matches. Nathan Nathan was a good team player. His batting was exceptional, being both aggressive and defensive at the same time. Nathan could turn the game within a matter of deliveries. Nathan hit a few monstrous sixes throughout the season and turned one of his results into a well compiled 50. Nathan bowled with pace, swing, and height, and was a great keeper too, rarely letting byes through. He wasn’t afraid to try different things at training and in the games, often with great results. Oliver Ollie was one of the biggest improvements this season. He got wickets when it looked like the side was not going to get any, and those wickets were often the major breakthroughs. Ollie got constantly better throughout training, especially with his batting. His batting contributed valuable runs to the side. Ronan Ronan was not afraid to put his hands up to try different things: open the batting, open the bowling, batting down the order, wicketkeeping. Ronan was tasked, being the only spinner, to experiment with his bowling: bowling over the wicket, bowling around the wicket, taking pace off the ball, bowling quicker. His experimenting paid off in games, producing vital wickets that turned the match. Ryan Ryan was elected team captain early in the season, and the result was a no-brainer. When it came to picking the batting and bowling orders, I gave that responsibility to Ryan and I took a back seat. The decision was a good one, as I saw Ryan’s cricketing brain thinking about how he could change the game. Ryan was always at training an hour early, improving his batting, and this extra training paid off in games. He was composed, risk-free, and always batted for the team even when personal milestones were there for the taking. Ryan’s bowling varied, but it still got wickets regardless. Josh Josh helped us out for a few games and was a welcome presence amongst the regular players. Josh contributed handily with both bat and ball. He was a valuable member of the side, and I was thankful that we was willing to help the team out.

Season 2018-19 was a big year of learning for the boys in 14A’s. Our team was evenly balanced with first- year and second-year players with the former holding their own and will benefit from the high level of competition when they suit up for the club next year. It is worth recognising that our team had four players selected in the Under 14 Sutherland Presidents Team (Nicholas, Ben, Nathan & Adrian) in which defended their title in 2019. We also had two players selected in the Under 13 Sutherland Presidents Team (Bhavya & Evander) which finished strongly. Lachlan Cox made the NSW Catholic Primary School Team. Pleasingly, each week it was evident that as a team we made steady improvements. As the season progressed, the areas we targeted we executed. Our sundries were consistently reducing, our team batting totals were increasing, we placed a value on batting in partnerships and batting out the full allocation of overs. If we could have held on to some of the chances that came our way in the field, I’m confident we could have risen higher up the ladder as ultimately that became the difference in some of the games. NICHOLAS PALERMO The team captain, always busy in the field try to set fields to take wickets. One of our opening bats and team’s leading run scorer, Nick took on some fierce pace and swing bowling. His finest innings of 60 against Engadine saw him play shots all around the park. His off-spinners were also handy in picking up wickets, not to mention important in helping the team get through their overs more quickly. Nick is an exceptional fielder with a strong arm, took the catch of the year against Bangor and executed a couple run outs with the highlight being against Cronulla Seagulls with a direct hit from the . ADRIAN DUGANDZIC Adrian had his second year at the club and slotted in easily as a senior leader of the team. Great in the field with his positivity and encouragement, Adrian is a fantastic left arm seamer with many different deliveries. Unfortunately, he bowled without luck for most of the year beating the bat countless times but finished the season strongly. Adrian was a top order batter displaying a great technique and performed strongly as the season went on. JEREMY BENJAMIN “Jezzy” as he is affectionally known, is the spark of the team. His athleticism behind the stumps in my opinion is unrivalled in the comp, and he continually set the tone with his energy for the team each time we fielded. Jeremy played numerous valuable quick-fire cameos for the team and when he had his eye and was in full flight there was no one better to watch. He introduced some shots not seen before in the world of cricket, but one thing was for sure, he was lighting between the wickets. Always entertaining with bat, ball and behind the stumps. BEN HIBBINS A great all-rounder in the team. A high quality #4 batsmen, Ben achieved his first 50 this season against Engadine. Equally skilled in spin bowling, Ben chipped in with vital wickets and was always thrown the ball to stem the flow of runs from the opposition teams and was always economical with his overs. Brilliant in the field, batters knew not to take on his arm or to chip the ball in the air near him. Another solid year for Hibbo and a senior leader of the team.

Page 20 of 55 NATHAN TAYLOR Our spearhead bowler. Who will forget the opening game of the year at Heathcote Oval with these figures: 8 overs, 5 maidens, 3 wickets for 5 runs! Or his spell in the last game against Caringbah where he swung every for 7 overs. Finished the season with the most wickets for the team and with an average of 11 and was ranked 4th overall in the competition. Well done. Nathan was also devasting with bat on his day. When he strolled to the creased, the fielders quickly scattered and at times some grounds just weren’t big enough. SPENCER KLEEMAN Spencer is well adored figure in our team. His dry humour kept the lads constantly entertained. Spencer is the 2nd of our four left arm pace / seam attack. Another one of our bowlers where he constantly beat the edge of the bat, but on his day his left in-swinging deliveries to right-handed batters were unplayable. When batting, Spencer loved nothing more to pull the opposition fast bowlers for four. LUKE PEACOCK Luke’s first year in 14’s and handled the step up comfortably. By the end of the year, Luke cemented #3 batting spot and bludgeoned the ball around the park. When Luke hit the ball, the ball remained hit with fielders, bowlers and umpires all looking for cover. Luke’s scoring zone through the ‘V’ enabled the scoreboard to tick over quickly for the team. His right-arm medium pacers were valuable, as he got through his overs quickly with the odd leg cutters troubling the batsmen. BROCK FAINT Brock is a fantastic team member and a joy to coach. Always listening and looking to better his play with bat, ball and in the field. There were countless times when Brock found himself at the crease during a batting collapse and Brock’s fighting characteristics were of the highest order. Without doubt, Brock will go from strength to strength in 2019/20 season. BHAVYA SHARMA Bhavya’s passion for the game is infectious. If anything was bowled too straight or on his pads, he would whip you away effortlessly and loved playing square of the wicket. He was a handy contributor to the team with his runs throughout the season. Bhavya also possessed some nice variation with his right arm seamers and was quite often employed “at the death” with his tight bowling and composure. CODY REDDING This was Cody’s first season at St Pats, and he made an immediate impact. Slotting in as an opening bat, Cody had a compact technique and played with patience to develop many significant opening partnerships. Cody has a great awareness of the game and would often challenge the fielders with his quick singles. At times a leg-spinner / off spinner or medium pacer, Cody was always available to chip in with quick wickets. Sharp in the field, Cody would also help behind the stumps when required. EVANDER HERBERT Evander was also new to St Pats this season. Quickly he stamped himself with authority by claiming the new ball. Evander could bring the ball in or move it away with ease at pace. His ability to move the old ball in follow up spells will hold him in good stead as he progresses and will take plenty of wickets. As a batter, Evander could open or fulfil any top order position. A highlight of his batting was his footwork in attacking quality spinners down the ground. LACHLAN COX Sadly, Lachlan was only with us up until Christmas before he and his family moved up north to Queensland. A true firebrand, Lachie’s speed could cut batters in half and send the bails cartwheeling half way to the boundary when he got it right. Lachie made “Gully” his own taking 5 catches in as many games and was a pleasure to have in the team. I would like to thank the parents for helping with the scoring and setting up with the field on the weekends and the boys for fighting hard against fantastic competition each weekend. All the best to you for next season.

This year’s team were an entertaining group of gentlemen who revelled in their comradery and supported each other throughout the season. This was reflected in the team results and the team improved immensely and narrowly missed the finals. They were the only team to beat both the eventual finalists during the regular season. From a coach’s point of view, they were a very easy team to coach as they enjoyed their cricket and were eager to learn. Rival teams were always weary and treated them with respect for their cricketing abilities.

Awards Bowling: Michels, Riley Riley’s evolution as a bowler took a huge leap forward this year. Having coached him in the past, his gravitation to bowling spin was a revelation and the constant improvement over the season resulted in him snaring 10 wickets. A great prospect for the future.

Batting: Verden, Ben Ben is a powerful hitter and sweet timer of the ball and relished opening the batting with great success. His attitude of batting aggressively brought him quick runs though he kept his composure to build several 40+ run scores.

Coaches: Hoffmann, Robbie Robbie was the stand out all-rounder for the season and really seemed to enjoy his cricket. When batting, he was equally at home opening the batting as he was fighting rear-guard actions to set up competitive scores. Whilst bowling he was accurate, he was a brilliant fielder and whilst keeping, he was agile, athletic and reliable.

Begg, James A The speed king and possibly one of the fastest bowlers of the division, James always had a smile when terrorising the opposition batsmen and his mates in the nets. Like a typical bowler, loved to free his arms when batting.

Bonner, Ryan Ryan did not say much but his confidence increased throughout the season and so did his batting and bowling. His back of the hand ball accounted for many batsmen and he had a knack of breaking up established opposition partnerships.

Carmalt, Angus Gussy is a great spin bowler and shared most of the keeping duties with Robbie. Half way through the season he decided that he was not scoring enough runs and with typical determination set down practicing

Page 22 of 55 against the wall at home. Vastly improved results from the latter half of the season were a great reward for his practice.

Carter, Braydan Braydan has a very good cricketing brain and is a sound all round player. As a bowler he had the ability to stall the opposition’s run scoring and with the bat he was regularly able to find the boundary. Always reliable in the field and snared some cracking catches.

Eisbacher, Lucas One of our youngest players, Lucas stood up when it mattered. Lucas was a valuable pace bowler with a Mitchell Johnson-like character. When fired up, he threw some firecrackers down the pitch and crashed the stumps of many unsuspecting batsman. A strong arm in the field.

Evans, Matthew Matt is a terrific cricketer and was part of the fast bowling brigade for the team. Matt has got the ability to swing the ball and bamboozled many of the opposition batsmen. When batting, he used his strength and co-ordination to belt the ball a long way.

Forward, Liam Liam was always chatting and kept the team morale high. He was keen to be part of the action at all times. With the ball he picked up some handy wickets and snuffed out the opposition tail on several occasions. With the bat Liam put his hand up to see off the opposition speedsters.

Olsen, Andy Andy epitomised never giving up. Whether he was bowling, batting or fielding, he would do it with enthusiasm. With the bat, picked up some handy runs. Andy was our most reliable slip fielder and took some super catches.

Poole, Ben Ben is another who falls into the all-rounder class who always contributes. In one game he grabbed a bag of 3 wickets paving the way for one of our most comprehensive wins of the season. A safe pair of hands in the field.

Whittaker, Jack Jack was ever reliable with the ball and was the go to bowler for slowing the opposition run rate. With the bat, he finished the year on a high with a solid innings of 47. Winner of classic catch of the year.

St Patrick Under 14D had a pretty good season overall, missing out on the final by only 1 game. We had a purple patch winning 4 in a row leading into the break, but were probably a realistic 3rd placed team. Having said that, we lost to the top team by 6 runs and 3 runs early in the year, so our best cricket was very competitive. The switch between 1 day & 2 day games seemed difficult for us at times, that should come with maturity. Like all under age teams, it is hard to balance the aim of giving everyone equal participation, whilst also trying to identify everyone’s ‘best’ spots. Over the course of the year most of the team seemed to gravitate to a batting or bowling position that probably suited them best, so it would be nice to continue working on that next year. Looking ahead, we will probably (hopefully!) maintain 2 thirds of the squad next year. All the team have had at least a couple of years of grounding now and they should be getting more confident in their ability. Good luck to the older players who will be stepping up to U16s. We would like to extend a big thankyou to all the parents who turned up and supported the team, Paul D for helping out at training, also Steph & Andre – thanks for scoring every week. Look forward to seeing some of you around next year. To Warren – great job again, from a tireless worker for the Club, it is greatly appreciated from everyone. And finally, to the players – thanks for all your efforts, turning up at training, on hot days, on rainy days. You are a really great bunch of kids and hopefully you have seen glimpses of what you are capable of achieving. WARREN DALEY (Coach) and BRENTON KEMP

The 2018/2019 St Patricks Cricket Club under 14D team.

Sarah Lawler (Played 12B St Pat’s last season) Probably our most technically correct bat, straight and powerful. Highest run scorer in team, put together some good scores batting everywhere, probably best suited to high in middle order. Very straight bowler, hard to score off, and did some good work in the field, with some great slips catches. Blake Sullivan (Played 12D last season) Really good bowler, had some great opening spells. Showed ability to bat for long spells, and was involved in some good partnerships. Great reflexes fielding on close, with some ripping catches at first slip. Jayden Greig (14C last season) Exceptional all round effort. Showed maturity when batting, and adjusted his play to suit the state of the game. Very good bowling, had the knack of picking up a wicket or two in every spell, and also took some solid catches fielding around mid-wicket.

Page 24 of 55 Rhys Henriksen (12E L/S) Continued on from his solid year last year, with some really good spells of bowling. Picked up a few wickets and was probably unlucky not to snare a few more. Had a challenging year with the bat, which wasn’t helped by moving up and down the order regularly. Hayden Dalla-Camina (12E L/S) Very energetic player, always in the game. Knocked up some good innings, and was unlucky on occasion. Sent down a mixed bag of bowling, bit of medium pace, leg breaks, and off spin, and always challenged the batsmen. Chased down everything in the field and took some nice catches. As one of the first players at the ground, you could always rely on Hayden to start setting up the field (stumps, cones etc) Caiden Flanagan (12E L/S) Another fantastic year behind the stumps, very reliable, with a number of catches and the odd stumping, rewarded at Presentation with the Clubs “Wicket Keeper of year award”. On the odd occasion he bowled, was very consistent also. Probably didn’t get as many opportunities with the bat as last year, but was always solid, and good judge of running between wickets. Marley McEvoy (new to Club in 2018) Great addition to the team. Being a bit bigger and older, he gave us a real presence. Very quick with the ball, and had some opposition batsmen very nervous. Put together some great innings and partnerships, and steered us home in a couple of games. Great fielder with some very good catching. Joined team after round 2, still took the Batting Av, Bowling Av & shared the Bowling Agg awards. Jared Lamb (12D L/S) A bit of a revelation to those who hadn’t seen him last year. Very consistent and penetrating opening bowler, regularly picked up wickets. Hard hitting bat, racked up some big scores, particularly batting in the lower middle order. Scott Kemp (12E L/S) Very consistent year. Proved capable of hanging around with the bat, and figured in some good partnerships. Reliable in the field, involved in a few runouts. Consistent bowling, economical, and probably unlucky not to pick up more wickets. Mitchell Swan (12D L/S) Really good year. Reliable and consistent bowler, troubled most batsmen. Put together some really good scores, especially opening, batted through the innings once or twice. Solid in the field wherever he was placed. Jay Slootweg (Lucky import from Gymea 12D’s) Jay was our youngest player, very solid batting performance, especially when batting high in the order. Showed capacity to be patient and wait for the loose ball. Bowled pretty well throughout, and was consistent without taking a lot of wickets. Reliable fielder, with a strong arm. Ben Bonner (12 E L/S) Ben continued on from his fantastic year in U12Es (where he is still eligible,). Had the uncanny knack of picking up a wicket in almost every spell. Lacked a bit of opportunity with the bat, but was solid when he was in. Got behind the ball, and was a great judge of a run. Shared the bowling Agg for the team.

Middle, Ben Holdaway, Dylan Davies, Riley Carter, Zac Larsen, Boston Berry, Ava Jenkins

Front, Liam Hunter, Elijah Cox, Joseph Packington

It was a rough season for the U12A/B’s for players, parents and coach! Although fielding a squad with a scope of varying abilities, we started the season competing in A grade against teams filled with older representative players.

During these difficult matches, most displayed true strength of character and resilience in the face of adversity. Those prepared to accept the challenge and do extra training were rewarded with an improvement of their skills throughout the season.

After a heart breaking two run lose to the grand final winners and defeating the runner up, the team were recognised by the club receiving the St Patricks Don Truman Memorial Award for the Most Improved Team. A big thanks to Michael, you were my rock!

You were always there for the thankless tasks at training, setting up the field every game and entering the scores post-match. Apart from the balls, did we actually use any of the equipment in the large kit you had to carry everywhere?

Thank you to all the parents who helped out at training, doing warm ups and the job no one seemed to want….scoring! Special thanks to those who put their hand up to do extras due to last minute requirements.

Page 26 of 55 Congratulations to both Adam and Dylan who achieved representative selection with Sutherland for their respective age group.

Adam was a pocket rocket and a real example that size doesn’t matter! Although small in stature and playing up an age group, Adam showed real courage throughout the season especially when facing quick representative bowlers who hit him multiple times in the chest and box. He always was up to face the next delivery and ready to bat in the top order again the following week. He was the teams strike bowler taking the most wickets with 13 @ 17.38 Adam was the perfect team player and a coach’s dream always putting his hand up to take responsibility for the most difficult positions for the benefit of the team. You are a representative player in the making..

Ava was having such a fantastic season until it was unfortunately cut short due to a serious water skiing accident. Parents and players alike were so glad that she is ok and coming to visit during the last game. It was such a shame we were fielding! Whilst playing five less games than the rest of the team, Ava achieved the outstanding tally of 11 wickets @ 13.6 and reliability with the bat scoring 82 runs. She potentially could of proved the difference in a couple of close games had she been fit to play and imagine how many wickets she would of got if she played every game. Good luck in the future Ava, your best cricket is just around the corner.

Ben had a fantastic season improving in every facet of his game. He was the perfect middle order batsman scoring 139 runs often at a exceeding 120. The highlight with the bat was his quick fire 27 which nearly saw us knock over the grand final winners late in the season. Strong in the field and always bowling a consistent line and length, Ben was a very reliable bowler who the opposition found difficult to score against. He was very unlucky not to get more wickets. He certainly has the ability to become a good cricketer, keep working hard at improving your skills.

Boston is a natural athlete and was the team’s leader. He had a great all-round season excelling in all areas of the game including with the gloves. As a natural wicket taker he achieved the team’s best with 10 wickets @ 12.2 and 10 catches. His 2-5 from 5 overs against the grand final winners boasting 4 representative players had to be seen to be believed. As the season progressed Boston found his self believe with the bat and his game went to the next level scoring 155 @17.22 with a high score of 49! He was so unlucky not to get a half ‘Boss’ was a great talker! He often attracted the attention of opposition coaches and took the ownership for directing the team around each week. Your attitude was a pleasure to coach and I hope you the greatest success in the future.

Dylan had a fantastic season through his determination and a commitment to training with the desire to become a better cricketer. As the team’s foundation with the bat, he opened each week and was rarely dismissed achieving the team’s highest runs and run average with 156 @ 26 However, it was with the ball he showed huge improvement. After spending the previous season at keeper and not bowling many overs, Dylan’s off spin often had some genuine ‘fizz’ and was rewarded with 10 wickets as he consistently troubled the opposition. Also, congratulations being selected for representative honours in the Sutherland Presidents Cup squad.

Elijah unfortunately had to leave the team during the season due to moving interstate. In his time with St Pats, he was always a player you could throw the ball to when the team needed a wicket due to his combination of spin/pace deliveries. As a solid all round cricketer Elijah always had an impact in the game in some way either with the bat, ball or in the field but it’s his appeals that will be remembered. Won’t they Elijah 

Liam definitely has the makings of a good cricketer with great game sense and the ability to lead the team around in the field. His batting and bowling became easier as he gained confidence and his best years in cricket are definitely ahead.

Page 27 of 55 Liam excelled late in the season in the wicket keeper role. Unfortunately he wasn’t given the opportunity earlier but it is definitely a natural ability which will only improve in the future. Sam was the surprise packet for season and the deserving winner of the Coaches Award. After starting the season with a genuine fear of the hard ball, he finished summer having a go at everything, playing unselfish cricket (giving his wicket up for the benefit of the team) and even retiring not out against the top side. I think Sam will be remembered for his love of an on field sledge which was always fun and in the spirit of the game and for asking how fast the bowlers were every time he came into bat. Outstanding effort, I hope you continue to work hard and enjoy your cricket.

Joseph unfortunately had to leave the team mid-season due to high school cricket commitments. However he was a standout always displaying respect and politeness whilst maintaining a competitive edge. His deliveries often troubled the opposition and sometimes the keeper due to their extreme fast pace. A fantastic bowler who was unlucky not to get more wickets in the season and could achieve any level of representative honours when he master’s the yorker! Good luck in the future Joe!

Riley had some handy T20 style knocks with the bat. With his strong throwing arm and the ability to chase down a ball heading to the boundary, Riley often found himself in the outfield which can be a tough place to be on your own. With a high score of 17 against Gymea Bay A grade, Riley just needs to find his confidence. If he does, he has the ability to become a good player in future years.

Zac was a pleasure to coach especially with his great cricket temperament. Nothing troubled Zac, who always had a smile throughout the game and he enjoyed sharing a joke with the opposition. Solid all round player for the team, who often faced the fast paced A grade bowling attacks and never gave up his wicket easily. Over the season he worked hard on his game and was rewarded with improvement particularly in his bowling. Great work Zac!

Regards, Darren Davies

12 B - 1

St Pats U/12B(3) A great season for the boys that was unfortunately decided by the weather as opposed to their talent. The majority of our team were eligible for u/10’s this year, however decided to play together in the u/12’s and

Page 28 of 55 showed that they are a great bunch of kids and very promising cricketers. The improvement from start to end was noticeable as everyone improved their skills across the 4 important areas of bowling, batting, fielding and teamwork.

We started the season off well winning a few and losing a few but more importantly having fun and learning the game. Our running between wickets was a major contributor to our batting scores and always kept us in the game – those weekly games of tip and run payed off! In the end we only played 1 of our last 5 games as rain became our best friend – we had to win our last game to finish in the top 4 but got rained out with half the game still to play meaning we finished on equal 4th but relegated to 5th on differential. Unfortunately the weather plays an important role in cricket and we were just unlucky this year – but that’s cricket. Will Tinker – One of the boys who was eligible for the u/10’s, Will had a great year with the ball and improved his batting over the season. His fielding and running between wickets improved greatly as the season moved on.

James Walker – James received the coaches award this year as he improved in all three areas of the game over the year due to his hard work at training. His bowling improved each and every game culminating in his 3 wickets at our last full game of the season and his fielding was always top shelf.

Ziggy James – Ziggy’s batting started off slowly with him swinging like a rusty gate and it not coming off, then something clicked and he played a key role in our batting line up holding up an end, turning over the strike with excellent running and batting in partnerships.

Angus Smith – Raw pace is hard to find but we found it in Angus. A great year with the ball highlighted by his 6 wickets in one game. Looks good with the bat and can score quick runs which came in very handy. Lachlan Stubbs – Lachy is a classy player across all facets of the game. His batting was always reliable and his bowling was always accurate. One our senior players I could always rely on Lachy to steady the ship.

Kalan Stubbs – Kalan is a talented cricketer who bowled really well this year always being on the spot and taking wickets. His batting technique is nice and straight and shows tremendous potential, he just needs to believe that he is a quality batsman then he will score tonnes of runs.

Luke Jenkins – Jenko had a great season showing off his off spin bowling, when he gets the ball above eye level he is very dangerous. Luke’s fielding was excellent and his ability to turn over quick runs with the bat was very helpful when we needed to get on with things.

Isaac Green – Isaac was one of our regular top order players who loved opening the innings where he always looked comfortable. His running between the wickets was really impressive with him always looking to turn over the strike. His opening partnerships with Hayden always saw us off to a good start.

Hayden Clarke – our regular wicketkeeper and opening batsman, Hayden had a great season. He was safe behind the stumps, always encouraging the bowlers and fielders to be on their toes and his batting was effective, getting us to off to good starts, turning over the strike and hitting the bad ball.

Ben McLachlan – Ben had a wonderful season in all parts of the game. He could be relied on to take an important catch (the ball seemed to follow him), score quality, quick runs and take wickets. A quality cricketer who won the clubs catching award.

Byron Whitbread – Any coach gets excited when they have a young leg spinner on their team and Byron was that guy. He has a natural action, lands the ball on the spot and his natural ball is the wrong ‘un! His bowling was top shelf throughout the year however the highlight was his direct run out in our second last game – a highlight reel moment for the team!

I would like to thank all the parents for their help during the season at training and the games, particularly Matt for Managing and Brad and Mark for scoring. To all the volunteers at St Pats Cricket, thanks for your hard work which allows our kids to have fun every Saturday, playing a game they love. Finally thanks to a great bunch of boys who tried their best every time they got their opportunity and supported one another through the season.

Page 29 of 55 12 E

It was fantastic to see how the U12E side improved over the course of the season, with great all-round performances across the board. We had a great team spirit and were unlucky to just miss out on the finals (I think we would have been a chance had the last round not gotten washed out). Well done also to Chris Smyth for being such a great coach and his constant encouragement. I would also like to thank all the parents for helping with the scoring and bringing the treats each week – without you our season wouldn’t have been possible.

10 A

The St Patricks 10A team had an enjoyable season competing against the best other young players in the Sutherland Shire Association. Although the boys generally came out on the losing side of the scoreline, each of the players showed great commitment to the team and made substantial improvements in their respective cricketing skills over the course of the season.

Arvin Roy showed great prowess as an attacking left-handed batsmen, who despite his small stature demonstrated excellent timing of the ball and strength on the leg-side to regularly dispatch astonished bowlers to the ropes. His left arm swing bowling regularly troubled opposing batsmen and his safe hands contributed a number of catches both in the field and behind the stumps.

Adam Woolley really matured as a cricketer over the past twelve months, growing in stature as reliable strike bowler for the team, showing sharp handling skills in the field and a dead eye throw for the stumps. His confidence with the bat has grown and his calling and running between the wickets improved out of sight.

Alexander Efthimiou continues to deceive with the ball in hand, bowling left armed from a low trajectory he skids the ball through causing opposing batsmen all manner of problems. A tenacious batsmen himself, Alex works the ball around the field well exploiting the gaps in the field. His consistent backing up and clear calling always kept his batting partner on their toes, as the pair sought to rack up quick singles.

Elijah Herbert was a new addition to the team this season, having previously played his cricket for another club. He quickly developed a strong rapport with the boys with his infectious enthusiasm for the game and his sense of fun. Elijah’s aggressive batting performances saw him scoring runs more freely than any other player in the team and regularly hitting lusty blows which spread the fielders, however, his scoring intent did, on occasions, lead to him giving away his wicket far too easily. Elijah also possesses a lovely fluid bowling action that naturally swings the ball so has the potential to be equally devastating with the ball in hand.

Billy Packington was another powerhouse of the team with both bat and ball. His pace bowling carried real intimidation toward the opposing batsmen and this combined with decent accuracy secured him a good haul of wickets this season. With bat in hand Billy had both the power and stroke-play to put most opposing bowlers to the sword and, in those innings where he hit his rhythm, Billy was fantastic to watch at the crease.

Nicholas Fuller returned for another season with the club and continued where he left off last season as a reliable pair of hands behind the stumps and a gutsy tenacious batsmen who guarded his wicket jealously while enjoying picking off the bad balls especially those down his leg-side. Although not scoring prolifically he always batted with guile and a sound technique that will stand him in good stead in the longer form of the game.

Liam Gately was thrust into the A team, despite this being his first season of cricket, and far from being overwhelmed he rose admirably to the challenge. He developed as a steady medium pace bowler, maintaining a niggling line down the corridor of uncertainty that saw plenty of batsmen misjudge the danger he posed. As the season progressed he grew in confidence with the bat proving difficult for bowlers to dislodge and quick to pounce upon mistakes by bowler or fieldsmen in order to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Liam Breaden was returning for yet another season with St Patricks and once again brought his competitive spirit to fire up the team. He bowled with accuracy and aggression as one of our strike bowlers securing a number of three wicket hauls despite the limited overs format. In the field he took some excellent catches and was sharp with both his ground fielding and run out attempts. As a batsmen Liam continued to work hard to improve his technique, and when at the crease he always looked to impose himself upon the bowler freeing his shoulders to land some lusty blows that sent the ball racing across the boundary.

The boys had good fun, developed strong friendships and, irrespective of their final standing in the league, appeared to thoroughly enjoy the season. I look forward to seeing them all return next season to continue their cricketing careers with the club.

Well done lads!

Rob Fuller

A great season had by the 10E's with a semi final appearance in their first year playing together. This enthusiastic bunch really came together as a team and not only showed huge improvement in their individual skills, but the sportsmanship and mateship that developed between them was lovely to watch. Well done on a great season and looking forward to the next one.

Lawson Alpen - Great batting and bowling performances from Lawson this year. He showed great skill in running which got us across the line on many occasions.

Luka Barisic - Luka holds the record for most runs in a match for our team this year. But not only was he strong on the bat, he took many wickets bowling and several memorable catches this season.

Sam Burton - Sam has had a great season, he has worked hard on his bowling skills and this hard work has paid off with improved consistency in his deliveries and wickets taken.

Charlie Collins - this was Charlie's first year of cricket but you certainly wouldn't know it! He started strong and continued to improve throughout the season proving to be a formidable bowler and reliable wicket keeper.

Jacob Cox - an incredible bowler who caught many of our opponents off guard with his pace and strength. Unfortunately Jacob and his family moved to QLD in the second half of the season and he was sorely missed for his wicket taking ability and cheeky personality.

Page 33 of 55 Roy Eisenhuth - A big hitter with the bat and not to shabby at bowling either! Roy had a great season with some outstanding batting performances and his strong bowling helped us to several wins.

Joel Geisker - In his preferred position of wicketkeeper, Joel proved to be very reliable here and loved taking catches in this position. His bowling showed great improvement throughout the season, contributing nicely to our wicket tally.
