With another season over and to be reflected upon, it is one in which we can say we achieved some amazing things as a club. Preseason was certainly hard and tough as we were relegated to some unenviable net times, but that did not stop some sixty-plus individuals fronting up for a bat and bowl. The addition of some new faces including the Villani boys, Andy and Steve, certainly added to the feeling that this season was going to be a very good one. This hard training in preseason led into one of our most successful seasons to date. Coach Luke Rosbrook certainly set the bar high when he said we would be aiming for 6 premierships. It is no coincidence that with the great leadership we have at the top in Luke and Nick that we were able to have our top five senior sides make the grand final, with our 6th XI making the semi-final. To then have four of them bring home premierships is something we could only dream of at the start of the season. Whilst we fell marginally short in our aim, I think we can be very proud of what we have achieved this season as a club. Whilst A Grade fell at the last hurdle, the team should be very proud of their achievements as we made the Barclay Shield Grand Final for the first time in 24 years. Well done to Captain Nick Austin and his side on the season. We will be back bigger and better next year as we look to claim that elusive premiership. The entire club is as determined as you are to end the drought. Well done to Mat Doyle and his team on their undefeated season to be premiers and champions of B Grade (2nd XI). To win a premiership is a tremendous achievement in itself but to do so without losing a game is something extra special. Congratulations to Martyn Anderson and E Grade (3rd XI) on their premiership in a grand final win that will be remembered for a long time. After an up and down season, to beat the top side by 2 runs in the biggest game of the year was something special and the cheer at Riverside when it was reported over the phone was amazing. Congratulations to Jarrod Brown and his F1 (4th XI) team on their premiership. Taking on the top team away from home and winning in convincing fashion is no small feat so well done. Well done to Simon Merrifield and F3 (5th XI) on their undefeated season and be our second team of premiers and champions for the season. Congratulations on your efforts. We must not forget Robin Parsons and the G2 (6th XI) team who battled hard all season and made it to the semi-final only to fall at the penultimate hurdle. Thanks for the season Robin. It would be remiss of me not to mention that we also managed to get 5 junior sides into Grand Finals this season with two of them taking home the flag. Well done to coaches Matt Newell and Ben Neave on leading their charges to victory. Well done to Steve Gleeson and the junior committee on their season. It is a great result to get 5 of our 7 junior sides into grand finals. It is not all about results though as we strive for every boy and girl in Riverside colours to get a bat and bowl and enjoy themselves which is just as important as winning. These six premierships for season 2016/17 mean we have now won 128 premierships in our history – far and away the most by any club in the Diamond Valley which we should be immensely proud of. The new electronic scoreboard was up and running for Round 1 and was certainly appreciated by all spectators, even if it was a bit hard to read for the vision impaired balcony boys that occupy the rooms every Saturday. A new pitch was also installed over Christmas which certainly made things a bit easier for the batsmen as the ball was not whistling up around their ears off a length. Thank you to Nick Austin for all his hard work and his dedication to the role of A Grade captain this season. No doubt a bitter pill to swallow in losing the Grand Final but I know it will only make you more determined to win it next season. It is a pleasure to have a player and person of your calibre at Riverside Nick. You should be very proud of yourself and your achievements. Thanks to Luke Rosbrook who is in charge of all six senior sides and takes on a great deal of work away from the club in organising pre-season and training sessions. Your professionalism and leadership knows no bounds and we as a club are extremely lucky to have you. Special mention to Vice Captain Chris Salm who despite having pre-season surgery toiled away all year for us. You are a credit to yourself with how much effort you put into the club and I cannot thank you enough Salmy. Thank you to our batting coach Ian Simpson who has done so much with all of our players this season. You should take a fair bit of credit for our successes as your knowledge and teaching of the game is fantastic. Thanks for all your hard work Simmo. Thank you to our sponsors who keep the club going from a financial standpoint. Without our sponsors we would not exist so if you can, please support them as much as they support us. They put a lot into the club so we should all put back into them. Thanks to all the sponsors. If I was to thank individually every person that has put their hand up to help this season, this would be the longest President’s report in history but I will do my very best and apologies if I do forget anyone.     7 RICHARD CASHMAN The Packer cricket war There is no doubt that the dramatic intervention of Australian media magnate Kerry Packer in Australian and world cricket in 1977 repre- sented a great upheaval that appeared cataclysmic and confusing at the time. Supporters of WSC variously labelled it as a ‘great cricket hijack’ (Christopher Forsyth), a ‘staggering coup’ (Trevor Kennedy) and even a ‘democratic revolution’ (Andrew Caro). Others contended that WSC con- tributed to the ‘Americanisation of cricket’ (Chris Harte), the ‘proletarianisa- tion of cricket’ (Adrian McGregor) and the promotion of hyper-masculine values (Bill Bonney). Because World Series Cricket had been such a well-kept secret for more than six months, the cricket world was stunned after Australian journalists Peter McFarline and Alan Shiell reported the news on 9 May 1977. The cricket establishment reacted with a great sense of outrage and betrayal at what it regarded as an underhand attack on world cricket traditions and authority. The world cricket media, with relatively few exceptions, condemned and denigrated WSC. The upheaval in world cricket was described vari- ously as a ‘circus’, ‘Packerball’ and ‘Packer cricket’ rather than by its name, World Series Cricket, which had been registered on 16 August 1976. After night cricket and coloured clothing were introduced another pejorative term, pyjama cricket, was added to the list. Players who signed up with Packer were described as ‘a bunch of money-hungry mercenaries’ (Eric Beecher). Such descriptions questioned the legitimacy of WSC and Kerry Packer was demonised in the press as an ogre with a ‘meat-mangler smile’. 1 Surprisingly, after just two years of a bitterly fought war, a rapprochement was announced on 30 May 1979 and the World Series Cricket war was over.
