“…Oh How I Want to Be at Nettleton…” “…oh how I want to be at Nettleton…” 40 years of STC 1967 – 2007 Saturday 17th February 2007 Dear Club Member, F On behalf of President Stephen Hoy and the Committee of the STC South Camberwell Cricket Club, it is my great pleasure to table the official 40th Anniversary Club History. This document contains a full history of the Club’s progression from a O small parish based organisation, to its current position as one of the largest clubs in the Eastern Cricket Association. In 40 years, we have had over 600 senior players proudly represent STC, wearing the trademark red cap. R Sincere thanks to Jack Krohn for his fastidious record keeping, and assistance in preparing this document for publication. To “editor in chief”, Paul Zennaro, I also extend my appreciation for hours of proofreading and formatting to enable us to present this professional document to you today. T 40 years old, and stronger than we have ever been….oh, how I want to be at Nettleton. That remark was the beginning of STC South Camberwell Cricket Club. Alan Burt was overseas at the time. On his return, he and Alan Yarwood enlisted the help of Joe Cain and the curate of the local Catholic church of St Cecilia's, Fr John O'Callaghan, in fielding a team from the parish. An approach was made to Rev Wittingslow of the local St Mary's Church of England to sponsor the club to be known as St Cecilia's Cricket Club into the Eastern Suburban Churches Cricket Association. That Association however refused to accept the club into their competition as at that time Catholic clubs were not allowed to enter. An application was then made to Mr Alf Dunstan, the President of the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association (ESCA), for admission into their competition. ESCA advised that we would be accepted into the Association but only in the lowest grade of matting - C Grade. This small group then decided that the club must be given a name. It was decided to retain the Church connection at St Cecilia's but not to use the church name as we were not entering a Churches competition. To this end the name STC South Camberwell was chosen. Through the secretary of the Nettleton Park Committee of Management, Mr Jack McGuiness (also a parishioner at St Cecilia's), the group was able to obtain the shared use of a pitch at Nettleton Park.

  • In Packer's Shadow: Children-Controlled Cricket Matches
In Packer’s Shadow: Children-controlled Cricket Matches of the Early- 1980s (a Western Australian example) By Kieran James Introduction Children’s rights remains an important topic in the modern day. It was distressing to see children’s rights being dismissed as soon as the Covid-19 lockdown was put into place by the British and Scottish governments in March 2020. Lip-service was paid to children’s rights for several decades’ right up until a perceived crisis occurred and then they were immediately forgotten in the name of a “public health” “pandemic.” Children were not asked their opinions on the lockdown or issues such as whether schools should be closed and exams cancelled. It was not even part of the discourse of the possible. In this new environment, a 16- or 17-year-old had as much influence and voice as a 5-year-old, i.e. absolutely zero. In Scotland, where I live today, the adults abandoned the town-centers as soon as lockdown hit. Then an unexpected new sight emerged of groups of teenagers riding around the streets on bicycles – if the adults didn’t want the town-centers then the children would take them! I was delighted to see this happen - it was their subversive protest against their own alienation. In this article I re-examine the issue of children’s control of children’s sport versus adult-control of children’s sport through a detailed study of some unique and interesting primary data from Perth, Australia, 1979-81. This primary data, derived from my own notes and documents that I wrote at the time, is a summary of the lead-up to and the first-innings of the first cricket match in a three-match series, organized by Stanley Erskine (name changed) and me, the captains of two 11-player teams of 11-year-olds.

BEENA BULLETIN Official Newsletter of the Murrumbeena Cricket Club http://www.murrumbeenacc.com/ Issue 0412-13 12 December 2012 President’s Report After watching the seniors last week it is a timely reminder for us all to remember on how to play the game in the right spirit including observing the rules and codes. Unfortunately, senior and junior members witnessed an incident including audible offensive language that was disappointing and unnecessary. I would like to congratulate the Murrumbeena players who where caught up in the incident in how they conducted themselves. Many senior players and committee members have had involvement as umpires, captains, coaches or team managers in various elevens over the years and have witnessed many incidents that are unfortunate and not in the best interest of cricket. After having a chat with Adrian Menara the other week there is no doubt it is still happening in cricket and as young as the under 11’s! Murrumbeena Cricket Club embraces and supports all codes that are adopted Murrumbeena David Thomson by the competition bodies and has its own procedures to deal with such 9569 0718 / 0418 337 366 incidents. Incidents will continue to challenge us but we need to remember the reason why we play this great game. As far as results go, all elevens won except for the second eleven, however, all senior teams are in or very close to the top four so another win to all teams Leigh Hardham 9763 2944 before Christmas would put the club in a very strong position. Having a look through junior ladders most teams are in a similar position with a domination by the under 11’s with the Maroon and Gold teams going particularly well.
