President’s Report

After watching the seniors last week it is a timely reminder for us all to remember on how to play the game in the right spirit including observing the rules and codes. Unfortunately, senior and junior members witnessed an incident including audible offensive language that was disappointing and unnecessary. I would like to congratulate the Murrumbeena players who where caught up in the incident in how they conducted themselves.

Many senior players and committee members have had involvement as umpires, captains, coaches or team managers in various elevens over the years and have witnessed many incidents that are unfortunate and not in the best interest of cricket. After having a chat with Adrian Menara the other week there is no doubt it is still happening in cricket and as young as the under 11’s!

Murrumbeena Cricket Club embraces and supports all codes that are adopted Murrumbeena David Thomson by the competition bodies and has its own procedures to deal with such 9569 0718 / 0418 337 366 incidents. Incidents will continue to challenge us but we need to remember the reason why we play this great game.

As far as results go, all elevens won except for the second eleven, however, all senior teams are in or very close to the top four so another win to all teams Leigh Hardham 9763 2944 before Christmas would put the club in a very strong position. Having a look through junior ladders most teams are in a similar position with a domination by the under 11’s with the Maroon and Gold teams going particularly well.

I would like to thank all of the junior players and parents who came down or stayed on for the junior clinic. Leigh Hardham and the senior players enjoy being involved and hopefully some tips and tricks were learnt. Also, congratulations to all junior players that have made representative teams. Peter Hay has mentioned we have several players representing various competitions so good luck.

Socially, the next major function is the Christmas party on the 23 rd December so once again we are looking for a big crowd to come down and support the club. Details in this issue and on the website.

Finally, Luke Gale has had to fly back home unexpectedly due to a family illness. We wish Luke and his family all the best and hope to see Luke back at the Beena arena very soon

Coaches Report

Christmas is fast approaching and we have one more round before a well-earned break, and despite interruptions to our schedule with T20 matches we have maintained a solid workload on the training track which is bringing us great results in our matches. Please ensure that we keep this up over the next fortnight so we can be set-up for a big finish after Christmas.

The First XI got back on the winners list and into the four with a strong win at home, congratulations to Jarrod Walker for another 3 , and to Troy Lamb who’s exceptional 151 set us up for a great victory. The Second XI was disappointed to go down, well done to veteran seamer Andy Paton who claimed another 4 haul. The 3 rd XI scored a massive 100 run win, thanks largely to a 50 from the inform Kuntal Jani, and 4 th XI also had a big win thanks to 50 from Jake Stanbrook and 4 wickets from Cam Walker.

Junior Bulletin

One more round before the Christmas break so it would be wonderful if we can go to the break with some good results this weekend. From what I can see from last week's results all of our junior teams had a win - with the exception of the Under 15 Gold team who were involved in a close one with East Malvern - I think we are in the process of validating the result as a tie. So 7 1/2 wins! A fantastic effort.

Under 15s Pizza & Pop Many thanks to all of the families and kids who came along to the Under 15s Pizza & Pop night last Friday night. We had almost 50 in attendance which was excellent and it was great to see the kids and parents mixing across teams, listening to the coaches on their season updates and enjoying some Friday night chat. Thank you in particular to Jarrod Martin and Brett Hardham for staying around to run the bar and Gail Hardham for organising the flyers.

T20 Good to see some of our juniors at the T20 last night against McKinnon. The kids really do love coming along to these matches.

Individual Junior Coaching As some of you will be aware, Dan Parkinson has been assisting us with junior training. Dan is now available for personal coaching sessions, which can be very beneficial in accelerating your child's cricket skills and understanding of the game. Please refer to the flyer elsewhere in the Newsletter.

Xmas Party Please support the Club's Annual Xmas Party at the Beena Arena on Sunday 23rd December. Details elsewhere in the newsletter. Flyers have also been distributed to all.

Please see your Team Manager asap.

We also plan on holding a Junior T10 match against Forest Hill at the Xmas Party as a "curtain raiser" to the main T20 match vs Forest Hill.

Please support your club .

TRIVIA

The performance of Troy Lamb in scoring 151 before tea must surely be a record, but as we have never recorded the situation at tea, we will never know. Suffice to say I have no recollection of anybody, on turf at least, scoring that number of runs before the interval. Troy’s 151 is the second highest score for the 1 st XI since we began playing on turf, bettered only by John Patton who made 162 against Old Mentonians in 2006/07. Jim McDermott (149) and Jeff Graham (146 twice) have gone close to the 150 mark. There is still some way to go to reach the highest known score in the club’s 1 st XI, 198 made by Ted Wolsley in the 1932/33 Grand Final against Tooronga. Cheltenham’s score of 255 is the fourth highest the 1 st XI have successfully chased - Interestingly the highest “chase” was the 276 made by Old Mentonians when Patton scored his big hundred . The opening partnership of 134 between Troy and Darcy Hargrave was also noteworthy, being the third highest recorded for the 1 st XI on turf. The only higher 1 st wicket partnership is 144, made by Ron Craig and Peter Newton (Snr) in 1964/65 against Glenhuntly, and more recently by Troy Lamb and Matt Williams, against Cheltenham last season.

And now for something really, really trivial. When John Patton scored his 162 at Old Mentonians, Troy Lamb was the third man out, dismissed for 96, with the score on 211. Last Saturday Troy Lamb was again the third man out, this time for 151, but also with the score at 211. Isn't that spooky!

1st XI - Round 5 vs Cheltenham (WON)

In Round 5 we hosted fellow finals aspirant Cheltenham, and following a correct call Cheltenham decided to bat on what looked like an interesting Beena arena wicket in fine conditions. Luke Gale has returned home briefly so James Lockhart was drafted in to join the middle order in our first change for the year.

Jarrod Walker (3-55) got us an early breakthrough once again and despite some tidy bowling and fielding we were looking a little down the barrel shortly before tea with the visitors sitting comfortably at 2-90, before a double bowling change brought us 3 quick wickets to have us back in control just after tea with the visitors at 5-105. Unfortunately we slipped a little in the field after this, with a couple of missed chances allowing the tail to wag and Cheltenham to finish on 9-255 at the end of play, with Jimmy Handley (1-35 in 20 overs), Matt Williams (2-42) and Troy Lamb (2-53) all amongst the wickets.

On day two we set about the task in fine style, with our new opening combination of Lamb and Darcy Hargrave putting on a fine stand of 134 in quick time before Darcy was out for a well-made 41. This paved the way for Troy to unleash, and he was dismissed just before tea for a magnificent score of 151 from 140 deliveries, to leave us at 4-211 at the tea interval. With the wicket starting to crumble after the break, a solid partnership of 41 between Jarrod Martin (20) and our Mat Pearson (20) got us past the required total, before some nice stroke play from Jimmy Handley (40*) and James Lockhart (17) got us up to 8-328 from our allotted 80 overs.

This was a great result for the First XI, putting us 4 th on the ladder, within striking distance of the top teams and six points clear of the chasing pack. We have a two day game starting this Saturday against bottom placed Moorabbin Park, with a one day match against second placed Port at Teac oval on Sunday the 17 th to make-up for the Round 1 washout. I urge all players & supporters to get down on Sunday to support the boys in what is a crucial game for our club.

2nd XI - Round 5 vs Cheltenham (LOST)

The seconds this week played Cheltenham with the winning team taking the opportunity to get a spot in the top 4. The coin was tossed, the call was heads and Captain inzaneo won his first toss for the year electing to bat.

The seconds started off their innings well, being 3 for 100 at tea. However after the solid start a collapse saw us all out for 130.

With the remaining overs of the day Murrumbeena had to bowl getting two wickets to have them 2/22 overnight chasing another 110 for victory. As Melbourne so often does, a significant change in conditions saw the Beena field in significantly hotter weather than Cheltenham in the previous week.

The wind dried out the wicket making wickets hard to come by, to the boys credit even though they passed us 4 down just after tea we continued to work hard to take the remaining wickets. Will and Prayank bowled many overs at the tail with the reward coming to Prayank taking 3 wickets as well as the big man Andrew taking another 4 this week taking his season tally to 16 already.

Even though the seconds lost the effort that was putting in under such condition is a standard that I can only hope we take in to future matches.

A special mention has to go to JN Banks who managed to send the ball flying over the square leg in our second hit in what can only make Aaron Finches hook shot look like sand wedge out of a bunker..

3rd XI - (No Report)

4th XI - 1st December vs Hampton 4 (ABANDONED)

After winning the toss we sent the opposition in to bat on what looked to be a slightly sticky wicket. Success came our way in the first over with Max Ingram getting a nick to first slip. From then on it was hard work with not many wickets, but thankfully not many runs either. The opposition doggedly batted though their 36 overs and reached 6/90. Max was the standout bowler finishing with 3/16 from 7 overs.

Our batting effort was rather slow and key wickets falling for few runs saw us in a tight position at 5/56 when the weather turned bad and constant rain meant the match was abandoned. Priyanka was they only beacon with the bat, carrying his bat throughout the 26 overs that were bowled to score 16 runs.

Was a little disappointing to have the weather intervene when we had an ideal opportunity to post a win.

4th XI - 8th December vs Bonbeach Tangy (WON)

On a day that promised to be hot and long it was a good toss to win. Deciding to bat was proving to be the best decision as we quickly accumulated runs at nearly 6 an over. Despite a drop in the run rate when Tommy Mann came out to bat, our batsmen scored relatively freely and we amassed an imposing 7/202. Standouts with the bat were Jacob Stanbrook (50 retired), Michael McMahon (34), the evergreen Ian Walker (23no), Raman Warring (18) and Ravi Lohani (15no)

With our bowling effort starting rather late due to the oppositions slow over rate, we were keen to get amongst the wickets quickly. Three quick wickets to Cameron Walker saw the score at 3/19 after seven overs. After that their batsmen dug in a proved hard to remove with some assistance provided by some dropped catches. They ended up batting out the overs to finish on 6/111. Cameron Walker finished with 4/15 and one wicket apiece went to Raman and Priyanka.

A good win setup by some solid batting.

Under 15 Gold - Round 5 - Vs East Malvern Tooronga (DRAW)

Finally the weather on Friday night was more like summer… winning the toss we elected to send East Malvern into bat. Our bowling was good and we restricted their runs early in the innings. The middle order started to put some runs on and “No Balls & Wides” from us didn’t help!! The whole team bowled a couple of overs each with wickets to Vitthal (2/22) Jayden (2/12) Tyler (1/9) Jezza (1/11) and Gander (1/13), a couple of run outs and a spectacular caught behind by Melina – we bowled East Malvern out for 137.

The second week, saw warmer conditions again and the team went in with a very positive attitude, however we suffered an early batting collapse (4/24) but Jayden & Lewis took matters onto their own bats, with some very solid & patient batting - Jayden retired on 51 (no) and Lewis (43). The rest of the team supported them but the game came to a disappointing & sudden end – but now the result has been deemed a draw!!

A note to all scorers - check & acknowledge scores with the other team at the start and end of each game!!

Under 15 Maroon - Round 5 vs Mt Waverley Mayfield (WON)

After our two week bye we were back at it at Duncan McKinnon .Playing against Mt Waverley Mayfield in a two day game. Without Nic, Sam had to toss by himself. Mayfield won the toss and elected to bat, which suited us.

Once again our bowlers did the job early; Travis 10 overs 1/40, Darcy 0/21, Tim 0/33, Alex Ross 1/30 and Ethan 0/14. Harry took his first wicket for the team 1/9; well bowled. Pick of all the bowlers was Praveen 10 overs 3 maidens 3/17. A fantastic performance. At the end of the 45 overs Mayfield were 6/174. The boys would have to be "on" to pass that score.

Second week our turn to bat, nice hot sunny night. We tried something a bit different pushing Tim up the order to opening with Alex Hay. Unfortunately it didn't come off this time…Tim out in the first over for a duck. Then Alex Hay was out in the fourth over for 3. Two new batsmen at the crease with the score at 2/3. Alex Ross and Nic Chapman pushed the score along to 63 before Nic was out for 26. Ben Chapman made a quick 6 before getting caught, Alex Ross retired on 52, Adam Celik made a stylish 10 and Sam and Praveen pasted the score in the 41st over. Sam retired on 50, Praveen and Alex Soundias finished the overs with the score sitting on 5/193, a fine effort. Praveen 14 no, Alex 0 no. A much needed win that was well deserved. Well done boys.

Stand out performances with the ball was Praveen. Stand out with the bat was Alex Ross and Sam Pennell, both making 50's .Some of the best batting that I have seen this year. Well done boys.

Awards went to Sam for making 50 and Tim for stepping up and opening. Enjoy your Grilled burgers! Looking forward to training this week; something a bit different will be happening.

Under 13 Gold - Round 7 - Vs Emmanuel South Oakleigh (WON)

MCC U13 Gold played Emmanuel Sth Oakleigh. We managed to restrict the opposition to 146. Bowling honours to Jack, 2/5 and Aidan, 2/7, with single wickets to six others. Nic took 3 great wicket keeping catches. After a good start in week 1 from Xavier (46) and Aidan (49 n.o.) both boys went on to make their highest scores ever for MCC, as did Jose (36 n.o.) and Nic (22) on our way to a total of 9/259. Jack made a solid 22 with a number of boys making double figures: Cooper (14), Chris Menara helped us with 13, Jacob (12) and George (11). A great win.

Under 13 Maroon - Round 5 - Vs Malvern Blue (In progress)

On Friday evening the 30th of November our Under 13 Maroon team graced the home ground at Murrumbeena. We lost the toss to Malvern, but everything went right from then on.

There was barely a let-up in pressure as the bowlers were rotated through. Aidan McShane captained for the first time, and opened the bowling, with some fast bouncy balls from the Southern end. He ended up with figures of 3 for 5 from his 6 overs, but that doesn’t include the ball that pushed the off stump back by 3cm without dislodging the bail! Ben Fierenzi was just as lethal from the other end, completing 2 for 2 from 4 overs. Most of the team had a bowl for 3 or 4 overs each, with notable figures being Jarrod Lee 1 for 1, Tom Kelly 0 for 3, Joseph Hourigan 0 for 16 (but bowled really well), Jacob White 0 for 6 (some of the best leg spin seen in this grade), Jared Williams 1 for 6, Michael Agnos 1 for 0, Naveen Paranagama 0 for 10 and Angus Spargo 0 for 7. Malvern were all out for 71, a great effort by the whole team.

Ben Fierenzi followed up his bowling figures with a caught-behind as keeper, then opened the batting and was 10 at stumps, with Jacob White not out 13, and the team none for 37.

Thanks very much to Rohan White for umpiring, and we’ll see you all on Friday night for the continuation of the innings!

Rohan White Coach

Under 13 White - Round 5 - Vs Maccabi Ajax Cougars (WON)

We won the toss and put the opposition in on a green wicket (it’s always green as it’s artificial).

The boys bowled well and kept Ajax to 6/109 from the allotted 45 overs. All the bowlers kept a tight line and length with Joel Thompson getting 1/8 off 4 overs off a ripping leg spin and Will Elliot keeping it super tight with 0/4 off his 4 overs of left arm swing. Xavier S, Dan, Ben and Seb also got wickets and Lachie B took a sensational catch.

The second day Seb and Ben got off to a great start; we passed their total 5 wickets down and went on to finish at 8 for 233. Seb scored a fine 39 no and Ben took to the bowlers in the last couple of overs to rattle up 58 no. Xavier Ross filled in and also scored a spotless 50 no. The crowd were impressed with Sam Paine’s knock of 18 before he got an unlucky inside edge onto the stumps. Joel also chipped in with 14 before running himself out ... again (4 run outs from 4 innings!!)

The awards went to Sam who took his batting up a notch this week and Joel for a fine all-rounder’s effort.

Under 11 Gold - Round 7 - Vs Mt Waverley Gold (WON) Some warm weather at Kangaroo Park for the Round 7 clash against Mt Waverley Gold. Mt Waverley won the toss and asked Beena to bat on a dry wicket and fast outfield. Our boys batted beautifully throughout with every player getting runs and just the 2 wickets falling. Top scorers included Joel King (10 no), Max Delaney (19 no), Josh Coplestone (14 no), Ned Coplestone (10 no), Harry Holzer (16 no), Riley Hansen (12) and Ollie Sanders (10 no). Really pleasing was the way in which Beena paced themselves through the innings and the improved calling and running between wickets. Beena's total after 24 overs, 2 for 149 - our second highest score for the season.

When Beena took to the field, it quickly became evident that Mt Waverley Gold had improved significantly since our first match a few weeks back, racing to 3 for 50 in quick time. Beena's accurate bowling, which has been a feature all year, finally wore down the opposition as wickets fell regularly and Mt Waverley were finally all out for 90. Excellent bowling efforts from Jack Bowser (on one leg), Sam Boontjes and Harry Shindler. The features in an outstanding fielding effort were Harry Holzer's 2 run-outs and a catch and Ollie Sanders' catch of the season - diving to his left at full stretch.

Great 59 run win boys - go Beena!

Issue 0412-13 12 December 2012

Round 8 - Vs Malvern White (WON)

Beena's first outing against top 4 side Malvern White saw our boys sent into bat against one of the better bowling attacks we've faced in 2012. Ollie Sanders (10) got us off to a flyer however the Malvern boys dug in and fielded well. Runs were hard to come by on a slowish outfield ... the other top scorers in Murrumbeena's innings were Josh Coplestone (25 no), Harry Schindler (12 no) and Beau Bullard (8).

Beena completed its 24 overs 6 for 98 ... not sure whether we had enough! The Malvern boys appeared confident that they could chase down Beena's modest total however they did not anticipate what was a magnificent bowling and fielding display from our lads. Excellent wicket keeping from Max Delaney and Joel King plus outstanding line and length bowling from all of our players saw Malvern struggle to score from the outset. Wicket takers included Sam Boontjes and Josh with run outs to Max and Riley Hansen. Other excellent bowling efforts from Jack Bowser and Harry Holzer saw Malvern finish their 24 overs at 6 for 43.

An excellent 55 run win to Murrumbeena had us outright leaders on the top of the ladder. Go Beena

Round 9 - Vs Oakleigh Gold (WON)

The weather bureau got it right ... a hot northerly wind and 37 degrees - coupled with zero shade at Caloola Reserve ... our harshest conditions to date, for players and parents! Oakleigh won the toss and had no hesitation sending Beena in. A really consistent batting effort followed from our boys with Joel King (15 no) getting us underway nicely. Sam Boontjes (25 ret) dominated the attack, Harry Holzer (19 no) chimed in with a quality knock and Mr Consistency in recent weeks, Harry Schindler (10 no) batted well with the tail enders. After 24 overs and 20lts of water, Beena ended its innings 5 for 144.

In the field, Beena's tight bowling and excellent fielding from recent weeks continued against a much improved Oakleigh batting line-up. Star performer was Sam with 4 wickets backed up brilliantly by our other wicket takers, Zac Coplestone, Jack Bowser and Ned Coplestone. Also, a huge effort from Riley Hansen who was suffering from a tummy bug but still managed to bowl and field impeccably. Beau Bullard and Harry Schindler were outstanding behind the stumps and Harry Holzer's tight bowling and catching saw him dual player of the match with Sam.

Oakleigh Gold finished their 24 overs 7 for 84 ... a solid 60 run win for our boys. Go Beena
