ANNUAL REPORT

SEASON 2000-2001

Established in 1926

(Foundation Club in HK&HDCA)

A DIVISION OF NORMANHURST SPORTS CLUB

Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

A very warm welcome to all cricketers of Normanhurst, their families and friends.

After a successful registration, the club formed a record number of 18 teams, plus a Kanga squad of 28 players. We fielded 15 Junior teams, comprising four Under 10 (Average), two Under 10 (Limited), two Under 11, two Under 12, two Under 13, one Under 14 (boys), one Under 14 (girls) and one Under 15. We also fielded three Senior teams in C1, C2 and D2 competitions.

The 2000-2001 season, which began in October (a little later than usual due to the Sydney Olympics), has been one of the most successful seasons in the club's history. The highlights of the season are listed later in this annual report, however some of the more notable achievements include:

• 3 x HK&HDCA Premierships (one junior and two senior competitions – a record for NCC);

• first win in the U13 competition and first junior Premiership for any age group since 1985-86;

• 3 teams entered in the HK&HDCA senior competitions; all made the Semis and two became Premiers (first ever D2 competition win; first C2 Premiership since 1959-60);

• a record 17 District rep. players (14 boys and 3 girls); and

• new corporate sponsorship from Tricon, marketing KFC restaurants (thanks to Gus Hearl).

These achievements have been very positive for the club, however one of the most pleasing aspects is the significant increase of 35% in registered players from 178 to 240 – a record number of players for NCC. More local children now play Saturday for NCC than ever before in our history.

The success Normanhurst has enjoyed this season has not happened overnight – the club has been steadily rebuilding over the past 3 seasons. The previous club President, Keith Carter, and his committee laid the foundations for Normanhurst’s rise to prominence and my committee has continued the momentum and introduced some new initiatives this season. Thanks Keith for your work for the club over the previous 2 seasons.

I would like to thank my hard-working Committee for their efforts this season. Bryan Whitlock has been Vice-President for the past 3 years and has been a very big help to me in running the club this year, including organising the club’s photos. Graeme (Gus) Hearl has been an effective Secretary for the club for the same period. Peter Vilimaa has balanced our books as Treasurer since 1998-99, as well as doing all the banking and cheques. I have performed the role of Equipment Officer for the last 3 years. Genevieve Liepa was appointed as Uniforms Officer this season and has been tireless in her efforts to distribute shirts to players and officials. Jaye Waldegrave came on board as Registrar and maintained the lists of players in the various teams. Neil Culleton single-handedly performed the role of Keys Officer, opening, cleaning and closing the dressing rooms nearly every Saturday and Sunday during the season (previously we had a roster to share this job). Andrew Thomson has been a willing helper in a number of areas. Jamie Weir took over the role of Kanga Co-ordinator this season and developed an enthusiastic squad of 28 children who enjoyed learning about cricket.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 2 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

The Annual General Meeting is to be held at Normanhurst Clubhouse, Harris Road, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 6th June 2001. It is expected that the entire Executive Committee (President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer) and the Equipment Officer will be vacating their posts after 3 years service to Normanhurst CC. We need new people to come on board and take over the running of our club. It is a rewarding experience so please attend the AGM and think about how you can contribute to the club.

Thanks to all the coaches, managers, scorers and assistants, as the club could not function without your efforts every week and our children would not learn the enjoyment of the great game of cricket.

An explanation of the club’s awards and trophies appears below. The Committee has agreed to the introduction of two new perpetual trophies and two new honour boards this year. In order to promote girls’ cricket at the club, a new perpetual trophy for Female Cricketer of the Year is being introduced. It has been decided to name this award as the Karen Price Trophy, in honour of Karen Hill (nee Price), who represented Australia in women’s cricket, rising to the position of Vice-captain in 1984. In between her stints in the Australian team, she played for Normanhurst CC for 7 seasons in the 1970s. She played in the men’s competition and took over 200 for our club in A and B Grades. Karen was invited along tonight, however she was unavailable as she is receiving a special award at a dinner at NSW Parliament House tonight. It is hoped that she may attend next year.

Another perpetual trophy being introduced this year is for the Normanhurst CC Team of the Year. I have donated this trophy as it was recognised that we have many trophies for individuals to aim for, but none for teams. The club’s Executive Committee will determine the winning team each season.

The Committee also agreed to the introduction of two new honour boards for display on the Clubhouse walls. The bowling honour board lists players who have taken a Hat Trick or 7 wickets in an innings in competitive cricket. The honour board lists our century- makers from this season onwards. We have decided to name the batting honour board as the Bill Kemsley Centuries Shield, after our most famous former player. Bill Kemsley played for Thornleigh and later Normanhurst Cricket Clubs from 1956 to 1973 and scored a record 27 centuries in A Grade. He was recently named in the Association’s 75th Anniversary Report as the best player to have played in the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association’s (HK&HDCA) senior competition. Bill played in 13 A Grade Grand Finals and recalls that one of his most memorable achievements was in 1971-72 when Normanhurst finally defeated the strong Hornsby CC team to become A Grade Premiers, after being runner- up to Hornsby 5 seasons in a row. We are delighted that Bill has attended tonight.

We are fortunate in having another special guest presenter here tonight. Ann Lofts is the current President of Normanhurst Sports Club and the former President of Normanhurst Netball Division. She has accepted my invitation to present some of our awards tonight. Thanks Ann.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON

• 35% increase in registered players; a record number of 15 junior teams and 3 senior teams. The new C1 senior team did very well to make the semi-finals in their first season together and the C2 & D2 teams did even better, becoming Premiers. This was a great achievement by our three senior teams, which are now expected to be promoted to higher Grades in 2001-2002.

• The C2 team winning their competition, successfully chasing 230 runs against WPHC in the Final at Turramurra Oval. This was Normanhurst’s first C2 title since 1959-60. This team, captained by Chris Hawkins, came last in C Grade in 1999-2000, so it was a fantastic turnaround.

• The D2 team winning Normanhurst’s first ever Premiership in this Grade. The team defeated Beecroft outright in the Final at The Glade. NCC has now won every senior competition in HK&HDCA, having previously won titles in A, A2, B, B2, C, C2 & D Grades.

• The Under 13 Slater team winning their competition, going through the season undefeated. This was only the third junior premiership won in NCC’s history – the last being in the U12s in 1985-86. Special mention is warranted for the top batting performance of Andrew Newton, who scored 60no in the Preliminary Final, 30no in the Semi-final, and 50no in the Final – all match-winning innings. Leg-spinner, Nathan Wood, also stood out, taking 5/8 in the Final.

• Nishad Kulkarni’s century in Round 1. Playing in the Under 14’s, he had to retire when he reached 75 no. He returned to the crease at the fall of the last and took his score to 109.

• Record partnership of 320 runs by Bryan Whitlock (178 no) and Bruce Wood (138 no) in D Reserve Grade against Wahroonga at Normanhurst Oval on 7 October 2000, which broke the HK&HDCA 5th wicket partnership record for all grades. Bryan’s individual score was an Association record for D2 Grade, as was the team total of 4/432 (dec.)

• Highest NCC run-scorer in Junior cricket – Nishad Kulkarni, U14 (360 runs)

• Highest NCC wicket-taker in Junior cricket – Nathan Wood, U13 Slater (20 wickets)

• Most successful NCC ‘keeper in Juniors – Alex Kobler, U13 Slater (5 catches, 4 stumpings)

• Highest NCC run-scorer in Senior cricket – Greg Ford, C2 Grade (521 runs)

• Highest NCC wicket-taker in Senior cricket – Rob Magrath, D2 Grade (43 wickets)

• Most successful NCC ‘keeper in Seniors – John Magrath, D2 Grade (14 catches, 3 stumpings)

Normanhurst Cricket Club 5 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

• Rob Magrath winning the NCC Senior Cricketer of the Year Award as a 16 year old (believed to be our youngest winner). He has become the first player in our history to win both the Junior and Senior Cricketer of the Year Awards, having won the junior perpetual trophy in 1996-97.

• Two girls teams represented NCC this season – a new Under 14 Girls team and a new Under 10 team which played in the Under 10 (Average) boys competition.

• New corporate sponsorship from Tricon, marketing KFC restaurants (thanks to Gus Hearl).

• 17 Normanhurst players were selected in HK&HDCA representative teams – 14 boys and 3 girls (see names below). Our Club also supplied a representative coach, as Bruce Wood was appointed as Coach / Manager of the Association’s Under 10 Foster Shield team.

• Shane Warne conducting a coaching clinic for 12 Normanhurst players at Drummoyne Oval on 16 January 2001 (organised by John Muldrew, club parent, and Bruce Wood). Photos from this day are on the Association’s web site – refer: http://www.hkhdca.asn.au / Picture Gallery.

• Neil Culleton performing the role of HK&HDCA U13 Divisional Secretary, co-ordinating this age group’s competition and statistics for the Association. He also did the U12s in 1999-2000.

• Michael Brown (Under 11 Waugh team) winning the Brett Lee Competition during the 5th Test match at the SCG between Australia and the West Indies on 3 January 2001. Michael’s bowling was timed at 86 kph, making him the quickest Primary School bowler in NSW. The story was reported on front page of the Hornsby Advocate newspaper.

REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS

A record number of 17 Normanhurst CC players were selected to represent HK&HDCA in 2000-2001. Last season NCC produced 13 rep. players. The year before (1998-1999), we had only 4 District reps. It was great to see 3 girls chosen this season. The players selected in 2000-2001 are as follows:

Normanhurst Cricket Club 6 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

AROUND THE GROUNDS

KANGA CRICKET

The 2000-2001 Kanga Cricket season began with an enthusiastic group of 28 children, aged between 5 and 8. The players were Cameron Allen, Daniel Arthur, Mitchell Berndt, Louis Burke-Xie, Jayden & Zac Fiakos, Mitchell Fullagar, Nicholas Fullagar, Christopher Georgiou, James Giltrap, Bernard & Patrick Heuzenroeder, Mathew Johnston, Adam Lloyd, Brendan & Cameron Maxworthy, Harry McInnis, Rhod-Lee Mercado, Samuel Morris, Ryan Pysar, Cameron Rickard, Lachlan Skulander, Christopher Smith, Jeremy Smith, Matthew Smith, Lachlan Stewart, Martin Weir, Hayden Witts. The Kangas trained at Normanhurst West Public School, from 9:00am till 10:30am on Saturdays during the season. We began most sessions with a short exercise and stretching program. The boys were then split into three groups for the cricket skills training portion of the morning. After some initial teething problems we split the boys into groups of similar skill levels. Generally, the groups were 5, 6, 7 & 8 year olds. Each group spent 20 minutes at bowling, fielding and batting. At the end of this we then played two games of diamond cricket. At the end of each session three players were awarded a certificate and a trophy (the trophy rotated week to week) for achievements in fielding, bowling and batting. The Kanga cricket team was given two opportunities to participate in a twilight game. Unfortunately the first game was cancelled due to wet weather. However, the second twilight game was a great success and all kids and parents had a great evening. NCC registered two teams and at the end of the games we came out even. I would like to thank the children who participated this season. Their enthusiasm and behaviour made the coaching a pleasure. It was also very pleasing to see the players’ skills develop throughout the season and to see them make new friends through sport. Finally I would like to thank Stuart McInnis, Peter Witts and the other fathers who helped out each week, without their participation Kanga cricket would not be the success it was this season. Jamie Weir – Co-ordinator

UNDER 10 (Average) CLARK (Girls team)

Coaches – Keith Carter and John Kerr Manager – Tony Poynton

Siobhan Poynton was determined to play cricket and undertook the task of finding and convincing others to join her. Thanks to her initiative and enthusiasm we were able to field a team for the season against the boys. Early on Siobhan was joined by Amelia Carter who brought Dad, Keith, and John Kerr as our coaching team. These two had a remarkable year, teaching a group of inexperienced and quite nervous girls to love cricket, competing and trying hard. It is due to their efforts that our team was always competitive against more experienced boys, that the girls enjoyed their year and maintained an ever growing enthusiasm for the game. As well as bringing us the coaches, Amelia was one of our most consistent and improved players. Fran Coggins struck fear into many with demon fast and accurate bowling, often too good to get the wickets she deserved. Zoe Woodard became a fearsome hitter of boundaries, Ruth Snepp was the quiet achiever, committed and consistently good. Katherine Butterfield showed real athleticism. Siobhan remained our great cheer leader and showed promise behind the stumps. Roy Poynton, our token male, was super sub and threw the stumps down consistently. Georgina Doyle is a batter with real talent, consistent bowler and excellent fielder. Rebecca Kerr returned the best all round figures in the team and is the most consistent player. Kristy-Lee Collyer is the most enthusiastic improver, whose commitment and effort was extraordinary.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 7 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

The best aspect of our year was watching this team together. Many were shy, nervous and quite scared at the start. They never argued with or denigrated each other, they never let their heads drop and they improved noticeably game by game. They enjoyed themselves, learned to communicate and always tried hard. They have been a pleasure for Keith, John, I and their parents to work with, and they have all become our friends. Can’t think of anything nicer to say than that. Tony Poynton

Awards: All Rounder Award: Georgina Doyle Most Consistent Player: Rebecca Kerr Most Enthusiastic Improver: Kristy-Lee Collyer

UNDER 10 (Average) PONTING

Coach – Graham Skulander Manager – Nicolee Skulander

The 2000-2001 season proved very successful for the team with more wins than losses. This was a great result as for all but one of the players, this was their first taste of “real cricket” after their years at Kanga. Ian Woodard took some spectacular catches and ended the season with the team’s best batting average of 36 which is a great achievement as this was Ian’s first year playing cricket. Mitchell Skulander proved a good all rounder ending up with a of 2.1 and being the team’s top run scorer with 125 runs. Michael Kerr also demonstrated success with the bat being the team’s second highest run scorer with 92. Bladon Moriarty played enthusiastically and improved enormously throughout the year with Jason Maxworthy showing consistent improvement in all areas, specifically with his batting ability. Lulu Morris demonstrated she could mix it with the best of the boys and thoroughly enjoyed her season. Nick Georgiou participated with great enthusiasm and showed good style with his bowling. As the season progressed, so did Daniel Rickard’s run off, ending the season with a run off Glenn McGrath would have been proud of. Our very own Brett Lee, Connor O’Neill showed good form with the bat and off his long run showed great pace and accuracy with the ball. Tim Corish also had a great season with the bat showing steady improvement and solid defence.

Special thanks to John Corish for scoring most matches and John Kerr for all his help and patience at training. Let’s hope with the team’s continued consistent improvement, we will become a force to be reckoned with in the 2001-2002 season. Graham Skulander

Awards: Best and Fairest Player: Mitchell Skulander Most Improved Player: Bladon Moriarty Encouragement Award: Ian Woodard

UNDER 10 (Average) LANGER

Coach – Michael Donnelly Manager – Geoff Young

The Langer team had a mixed season with only two wins but everyone appeared to enjoy themselves. Andrew Bastoli, Justin Donnelly and Clare Young were playing in the under 10 for the second year and their experience showed during the season. All other players were playing their first season. John Arthur had a good start to the season and was amongst the leading batting averages for the first half of the season. Andrew Bastoli’s experience showed as he was one of the leaders in both bowling and batting averages and only lost his wicket four times during the season. Justin Donnelly had the best bowling average for the team having taken 8 wickets for an average of 5.9. Justin was the second highest run scorer in the team having scored 19 runs in an innings twice during the season.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 8 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Rachael Morrison enjoyed her first season of cricket and resurrected her father’s cricket bat from many years in the cupboard to score a few runs. Clare Young was a steady player and will be remembered for the catch she took during Round 17. The two girls were an important part of the team. Paulus Poon was one of the valued players in the team whose contribution was consistent in both batting and bowling. Thomas Williamson was the highest run scorer in the team and had the best batting average. Thomas equalled the team’s highest inning’s score and had the second best bowling average. Nicholas Young was a stubborn batsman who protected his wicket with great success having only had his wicket taken three times in the season, the lowest number of wickets in the team. Michael Young learnt much in his first season and will be an asset to the team next year. Michael will be remembered for his cartwheels in the field. Our thanks to Jono Streichler who played a couple of games prior to Christmas when we were short of players. Michael Donnelly Awards: Batting Award: Thomas Williamson Bowling Award: Justin Donnelly Fielding Award: Paulus Poon

UNDER 10 (Average) GILLESPIE

Coach – Peter Krisenthal Manager – Kevin Rogers

What an amazing season! In the beginning when the boys assembled we had one ten year old, two nine year olds and six eight year olds playing in an U/10 competition. Of this, one had played 'proper cricket'; a couple had played Kanga and the rest backyard cricket only.

Our first game of the year was an outstanding success with a good win against a valiant opposition. The second game was not a win, with the boys pounded by the bowlers and belted by the batsmen. We expected that morale would be low, but through the players’ inner fortitude and the unerring guidance of master coach Peter Krisenthal the 'men' were now battle hardened for a long and fulfilling summer.

The team won 6, lost 6, with one wash out mid game. In total we scored 701 runs as opposed to only 620 against, 52 wickets taken averaging 11.92 runs / wicket - phenomenal cricket.

Many thanks to Andrew 'statistics' Beenie, Jaye “who-is-ringing-me-in-the-middle-of-umpiring” Tompkins, Elizabeth Willis, Joanne Rogers and all the parents, grandparents, siblings and wonderful supporters who witnessed a very enjoyable and commendable season.

To Peter, many thanks for your untiring and brilliant coaching. To the boys, many thanks for your sportsmanship, your will to learn, your drive for success, and for the joy you brought to your coach, manager and your host of admirers for the manner in which you played the game.

Lachlan Beenie: This pocket dynamo had a brilliant season wielding the bat with flair and confidence, bowled with great accuracy and showed keen fielding. Jarrod Govender: Behind the stumps this young man took what must have been Australian cricket's catch of the year, followed up by excellent batting and bowling over the season. Simon Krisenthal: Led by example all year showing grit and tenacity in all facets of play with some particularly crucial batting innings. David McFarlane: Batted exceptionally well and led from the front as one of the senior players and put his all into bowling and fielding.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 9 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Fergus McFarlane: Showed considerable talent with the bat being our leading run getter and was at the front with his varied bowling. Brendan Mew: Ensured that he put the maximum effort in to every session with diligent batting and bowling, with tremendous fielding being one of his greatest assets. Brent Rogers: A good all rounder's performance with intelligent batting coupled with some tricky bowling that kept the opposition at bay. Daniel Tompkins: Played with enthusiasm and zest showing quality footwork when batting, untiring team player with his bowling and great skill in the field. Sean Willis: Showed great leadership on the field, greatly admired by his fellow players; batted well, bowled well, fielded well, great attitude, good leader. Kevin Rogers Awards: Batting Award: Fergus McFarlane Bowling Award: Lachlan Beenie Most Improved Player: Sean Willis

UNDER 10 (Limited) GILCHRIST

Coaches - Jo Robinson and Debby Elliott Managers - Bill Elliott and Gus Hearl

What a great season the team had! Despite having a few Saturdays washed out, the guys only lost 2 games all season. The best thing about the year was that every player contributed and improved.

So here we go, the players – Parneet Bhatia and Christy Doran opened the batting most times and normally got the team away to a good start. Brandon Elliott was our number three and scored plenty of runs. Edward Grigg and Edward Hearl followed with Tim King and Digby Nield to give us a really solid middle order. Then when the opposition thought we were finished, we had David Rickards and Michael Robinson to give them a real surprise.

These guys are pretty handy bowlers as well. Everyone got amongst the wickets and a couple of times we had bowlers just missing out on hat tricks.

On a serious note, I would like to thank the boys for their efforts and good sportsmanship. Thanks to all the Mums and Dads who supported the team and gave us a sausage sizzle most weeks. Finally, special thanks to Gus Hearl for scoring and helping with managing the team.

I had a great time this year and can’t wait for next season. Until then, all the best with soccer, rugby and whatever else you take on.

Oh! I nearly forgot. A special thanks to Jo Robinson and Debby Elliott – coaches extraordinaire. Bill Elliott Awards: Batting Award: David Rickards Bowling Award: Parneet Bhatia Most Improved Player: Michael Robinson

UNDER 10 (Limited) WARNE

Coach – Steve Mitchell Manager – Barry Higgins

Under 10 (Warne) has had a very successful season despite the disruption the weather caused to both training and matches played.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 10 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

A feature of the season has been the ways in which the boys have played as a team and how they have displayed an important spirit of sportsmanship. Many of the boys commenced with Kanga in 1998 and are now in their third year as players in and members of the same team. Rain certainly disrupted the season with only seven full games being played. Of those Normanhurst Warne won six. Had matches not been disrupted the team would have won more. During 2000/2001 four new members joined the team. Firstly Tim and Bradley Mitchell who injected further ‘talent’ both in terms of bowling and batting into the team. Equally important they brought with them a father, Steve, who became the official coach and from 6 til 7 pm every Thursday during the season coached the team. Thanks Steve. Word went around that there was a pretty talented boy Chinmay Chitale in Kanga who needed to be ‘promoted’. Thankfully although disappointingly with one of our top players Edward Sowden moving to Summer Hill we were able to find a spot for Chinmay. A very promising player and one to watch. Samuel Hutchence joined the team this season and has player consistently and with a temperament becoming of the game. Reece Roberts continues to impress as a wicket keeper and this year took some extraordinary catches. A broken leg didn’t hinder him and it only sidelined him for one game before he took the field complete with plaster (saved padding up!!) Matthew Nelson is a talented cricketer, enthusiastic and keen. He scored the second highest number of runs (151) and equalled the highest number of wickets. Samuel Higgins scored the highest number of runs (203) with some hard, high and long hitting. Jarrod Witts continues to develop into a fine young cricketer and demonstrated terrific batting and bowling ability. He scored 148 runs and was out only four times. A great all-rounder. Daniel Wood also had a great season and is an impressive all-rounder. He took 12 wickets and scored 136 runs, only being dismissed four times. Barry Higgins Awards: Batting Award: Samuel Higgins Bowling Award: Daniel Wood All Rounder Award: Jarrod Witts

UNDER 11 HEALY

Coach – Scott Mayers Manager – Juris Liepa

The 2000/2001 season for the boys resulted in four wins, four losses and two washout draws. Two of the losses were close things, by three runs and one run apiece. We commenced with fourteen boys losing two at the Christmas break. Ten of the boys had played in either of last years U10s and four were first time players for the club. There was a bit of adjusting for the boys in their fielding, bowling and batting to cope with the transition to the longer pitch and the faster hard ball of the U11s as compared to the U10s. In view of this, the policy was to endeavour to ensure that everyone had a bat and bowl each game and when numbers warranted, the fielding was rotated for each player. As the season proceeded the boys did improve and combine well as a team. Their fielding developed in that they encouraged and helped each other whether a wicket was taken or a catch dropped; they backed up in the field and effected some good catches and run outs. Unfortunately there were a couple of injuries, Luke Fox and Michael Owens, at the start of the season with the hard ball but these boys did bounce back and continued to play. Each player’s bowling improved through the season as they got more adapted to the ball and pitch length and began to concede less wides and no balls. The wicket-takers were Nick Creighton (8), Simon Moussa and Tim Bennetts (7 each), Aiden Allen and James Penny (4 each), Scott Campbell (3) and one each for Daniel Chapman, Pat Collins (the main wickie), Pat Ferrara, Luke Fox, Sam Koch, Edmund Liepa, Michael Owens and Michael Stevenson.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 11 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

In batting the top scorers were Tim Bennetts (137), Pat Collins (97), Aiden Allen (54), Pat Ferrara (41) and Scott Campbell (31). Tim Bennetts also retired 3 times on reaching 30 not out. Multiple catches were taken by Pat Ferrara (3), Aiden Allen and Nick Creighton (2 each). Thanks to all the boys and their parents and hoping to see you next season. Juris Liepa Awards: Batting Award: Tim Bennetts Bowling Award: Simon Moussa Most Improved Player: Nick Creighton

UNDER 11 WAUGH

Coach – John Green Manager – Phill Pendleton

The boys put in an exceptional performance throughout the year, which has reflected in the results. From eight matches completed (one was a wash out) the team only lost one game but this unfortunately was not enough for them to make the semi’s. Luck was not with them this year. Thirteen players contributed strongly throughout the year with each one of them developing their cricket skills, enjoying the comradeship of their fellow players and representing their club in the most positive way possible. All parents were proud of their achievements. Chris Aldersley had a great batting season, bowled well and took some great catches. Jonathan Barakat was the second highest wicket taker and showed great determination with his batting. Ben Berndt’s first season in competitive cricket reflected natural abilities for the sport – a great team player. Pace bowler Michael Brown put fear into many batsmen and was exceptionally accurate on the field. Alek Cahill bowled fast and skilfully all year with great line and length. Alek shows great promise. Wicket-Keeper Nathan Cleasby was exceptional behind the wicket and was one of the teams best batsman. James Dean’s fielding was at times nothing short of courageous and he supported his team players at every opportunity. Tom Green was the team’s best bowler for the year and was useful with the bat. A strong performance all year. Spin bowler Andrew Giltrap played strongly throughout the year, was quick in the field and batted consistently. Nick Jones was one of the teams best all rounders. Consistent batting was matched by good bowling and fielding. James Merrick’s stroke making improved greatly throughout the year with his consistent fielding being a highlight. After an unlucky start with a broken arm, Matthew Pendleton again showed his great all round skills in batting, bowling and fielding. Team captain Steve Smith not only batted strongly all year but led his team mates by example. An outstanding team player all year. UNDER 12 McGRATH

Coach – Dave Ryan Manager – Craig McGeachie

It was the first year of cricket for half the team and there was much to be learnt. On the whole, the boys showed good improvement and will continue to improve with a bit more patience and the understanding that emulating their heroes’ one-day shots is not easy. The boys enjoyed the year, even though they only won one game, and showed a lot of determination to ensure they were not beaten outright. Nick Ryan ended up on top of the bowling averages, regularly picking up wickets each time he bowled, while Boyd McGeachie topped the batting averages, putting together several good scores. Ryan MacMahon developed a good inswinger and is a better batsmen than his scores suggest. Scott Barlow showed potential with the ball and will end up a match winner with more consistency and practice. Chris Kramer showed a number of times his defensive qualities were as good as anyone’s and his spin bowling developed as did Dheshen Govender’s, our other spinner. Arjun Bhat bowled as straight as anyone in the competition, and with an extra yard or two of pace will take a lot more wickets. Tom Hardiman went well with the bat and the ball, finishing up as one of our top all-rounders. Oliver Witt was another to show his defensive qualities at important times and Sean Pysar will continue to improve with more coaching. Daman Bhatia was another good all-rounder and with a full year would have developed further. Tim Stephenson always enjoyed his cricket and produced his best score in the last game to nearly pull of a win. And last but not least is our true believer, Harry Morton. Loves cricket and it’s paraphernalia, it’s hats, bats and balls. Cricket pads aren’t for batting, they’re a fashion statement. All up I believe the boys enjoyed themselves, gave it a go and learnt something. Craig McGeachie Awards: Batting Award: Boyd McGeachie Bowling Award: Ryan MacMahon All Rounder Award: Nick Ryan

UNDER 12 LEE

Coach – Andrew Thomson Manager – Frank Waldegrave

Played 9 - Won 4, Lost 2, Tied 1, Drew 2. We ultimately finished fourth in our division but were certainly the equal of the team which finished second, with whom we tied. Our only bad defeat came at the hands of the Divisional Premiers, Pennant Hills. There were many positive features and areas improvement during the season. There was however no improvement in the number of no balls and wides bowled each week. Each match 35% of the opposition's runs were sundries (360 runs out of 1010). If the team is to be competitive next season this MUST improve.

Thanks go to all of those parents who turned out each Saturday to give the team support. This support does have a positive affect on the team's performance. Also extra thanks to those parents who assisted at training on Thursdays and with the umpiring duties on Saturdays. Craig Austin - Both batting and bowling improved as the season went on. Scored 71 runs @10.14 and held 4 catches. Should have a good season next year. Joel Carter - Team captain and led by example. Batting honours with 191 runs @ 23.88 and equal highest wicket taker with 13 wickets.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 13 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Mitchell Magrath - Bowled steadily without much luck and fielded well, saving many runs in the field. Had a top score for the season of 21. Sam Moreton - A very steady player who added stability to the upper order batting and to the bowling. Scored 100 runs @ 12.50. Did not take the wickets his bowling promised but had a good Runs per over Rate of 1.97. Brendon Scott - An outstanding performance with the ball. Bowled 47 overs with 20 maidens and took 12 wickets at an average of 6.35 and a Runs per Over Rate of 1.62 which were the best in the team. Brennen Smart - Brennen was joint leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets @ 8.38. His fielding, especially his throwing, was an example to his team mates and he was good to watch as a wicket-keeper. Jamie Strong - Batting and bowling improved on last season. His work in the deep saved many runs and demonstrated the value to a team of a good fielder and of accurate returns. Jeff Thomson - Jeff's bowling showed good improvement this year troubling most batsmen with the bounce he obtained. Achieved a career top score in the last game of the season. Ryan Townsend - Surprised the opposition with his unorthodox bowling style and took some good wickets. Fielded well taking several catches. Robbie Waight - Had a good season as a bowler ending the season with 10 wickets at a good average of 6.50 and a Runs per Over Rate of 1.92. Regularly held his end up as a batsman and was a very useful all rounder. Calum Waldegrave - Another fine all round performance this year. Equal first in the bowling aggregate with 13 wickets but bowled too many wides and no balls and was runner up in the batting averages. Held 11 catches 6 as wicket-keeper. Frank Waldegrave Awards: Batting Award: Joel Carter Bowling Award: Brennen Smart All Rounder Award: Calum Waldegrave

UNDER 13 BEVAN

Coach – Mark Squire Manager – Graham Gorrie

This season was something of a journey for the Bevans. Introducing a number of new players and a coach who plays baseball but hasn’t played cricket since primary school in 1843, the team played their first two games against the top two sides in our division. Improvement followed. The team produced some competent bowling with some sharp and some not-so-sharp fielding to accompany it. Batting was the team’s nemesis – with better batting and running between wickets the team could have fared somewhat better.

The team consisted of: Adeel Ameer: New to Australia and largely new to the game – a player with real ‘rep’ potential whose fast bowling was inexpensive and, at times, lethal. He was one of the 3 leading wicket takers. His batting came alive as the season progressed and his fielding was always sharp. Sound skipper. Jack Dean: A real goer enjoying success with the bat and ball – a great fellow to have in the team with good all round talent. Daniel Evans: An enthusiastic first season player who was always keen in the field and ready to have a go with bat and bowl. Often opened gamely to the onslaught. School sport reduced his availability. Rakesh Giananey: Berowra: leading opposition batsman flogging us. Rakesh bowls – first ball very nearly caught and bowled Giananey. Second ball – bowled Giananey.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 14 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Michael Gorrie: Developed into one of the team’s leading bowlers and wicket takers – a fine off spinner with great length. He had a few ‘sitters’ dropped, which should have improved his tally. Ended the season clearly as the team’s second most effective batsman. Ken Loong Chew: Another game opener who had success with bat, bowl and catching at different stages. Good first season. Jack Packham: Another good man to have around. He mainly kept wicket and did it well. An able bowler and a trier with the bat. Sorena Sadeghi-Puya: Who’ll forget his ambush of the opposition at Annangrove Park with a fine pair of wickets? Good first season. Andrew Sparkes: A good slips fieldsman whose bowling improved from a near ‘chuck’ to a near hat-trick (and he bagged the 3rd wicket that innings as it turned out!) Good first season. Paul Squire: A baseball pitcher who wanted to bowl. First game – no success as a quick and tuned to his spin. His leg spin with great turn took 4-17 one game and he was the other leading wicket taker. School sport reduced his availability. Good first season. Safa Zowghi: Mr non-stop. No-one threw himself into the fielding like this whippet. He could also defend well and gained special praise from Berowra for facing about 18 overs in difficult conditions. Above all else, the boys and parents who came along, had fun. Mark Squire Awards: Batting & Bowling Award: Adeel Ameer Most Improved Player: Michael Gorrie Best Team Player: Jack Dean

UNDER 13 SLATER *** PREMIERS ***

Coach – Bruce Wood Manager – Neil Culleton

The ‘Slater’ team had a memorable season, finishing up undefeated Premiers, after easily winning the Grand Final against Hornsby. In all, the team won 9 matches (on first innings) and had one draw (wash out). I have coached this team for the past three seasons and it has been a pleasure watching them develop as cricketers and as young men, improving their skills and accepting responsibility when required. This team developed a great will-to-win and team spirit, and enjoyed the success of their team-mates. They stuck to the game plan and have done themselves and the club proud. Six of the players were chosen in HK&HDCA representative teams this season, which was well-deserved. Despite being unbeaten during the rounds, the team faced three sudden-death matches to win the competition, a Preliminary Final, Semi-Final and Grand Final. The Slater team showed its dominance, winning these matches by 144 runs, 5 wickets and 7 wickets respectively. Special thanks to Neil Culleton who performed the role of team Manager on top of his other responsibilities on the NCC committee (Keys Officer) and as the HK&HDCA U13 Divisional Secretary. Thanks also to the other parents, particularly to Brian Piper who assisted with the scoring. Alex Kobler (Captain) – Led the team well, setting good fields and sensing when to go on the attack. Was the most reliable wicket-keeper in the competition, effecting an incredible 4 stumpings, 5 catches and 3 run outs. He scored 82 runs @ 11.7; top score of 27. Proud Captain of the Premiers. Chris Vilimaa (Vice-Captain) – Had an excellent season and was our most dominant player. He was the fastest bowler in the competition and was genuinely feared by opposition opening batsmen. Took 12 wickets @ 10.5 off 62.4 overs and applied the pressure for more wickets to fall at the other end. Leading run-scorer in the team with 208 runs @ 23.1, including scores of 48 & 41. Took 4 catches. Nathan Wood – Had another very impressive season, taking 20 wickets @ 5.4 with his leg-spinners and scoring 143 runs in only 6 innings, with a top score of 50. Selected in the NSWPSSA Sydney North team and the U13 Gee Shield rep. team. He was the leading wicket-taker in the HK&HDCA Under 13 competition, which should win him the Association’s U13 Bowling Prize for 2000-2001.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 15 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Jeffrey Culleton – Started the season with a shoulder injury which prevented him from bowling and taking up his selected position in the Gee Shield rep. team. Developed into a reliable and technically correct opening batsman, scoring 189 runs @ 27.0 (top score 45). Bowled again in the New Year, taking 8 wickets @ 7.3. Took 6 catches. He contributed significantly to the team’s Premiership. Andy Ip – Had a very good all round season, opening the batting with 117 runs @ 16.7 (HS 43) and bowling some good spells of leg-spin, taking 7 wickets @ 7.2. Has the safest pair of hands in the team and took the most catches (8) and 3 run outs. Selected in the U13 IDCA rep. team as a leggie. Andrew Newton – Played on a part-time basis due to his Barker commitments. Showed his class to be the player of the Finals series, scoring 60no in the Preliminary Final, 30no in the Semi-final, and 50no in the Final. Starred in the HK&HDCA U13 Gee Shield team and on the rep. tour of Ballina. Tim Piper – Although he didn’t reach the dizzy heights he set last year in his first season of cricket, he contributed well to be our third highest wicket-taker (9 wickets @ 11.5). Scored 44 runs @ 8.8 (HS 24) and took 5 catches. Deserved his selection in his first rep. team (HK&HDCA U13 IDCA). Nathan Roberts – Showed great enthusiasm and improvement in his second season of cricket. Played straight when required, eg. his match-winning (unbroken) partnership of 31 runs in the Semi, but also unleashed some fierce pull shots. 3 not outs in his 49 runs (HS 19no). 5 wickets & 2 catches. Rangat Oberai – A new player in our team (and in the club), Rangat fitted in well and proved to be a promising all rounder. Has plenty of good scoring shots but nerves early in his innings brought him undone. Took 7 wickets off 35.1 overs with his ‘whippy’ action; also fielded well and took 3 catches. Sonny Saini – Returned to the Slater team after last being with us in the Under 11s two years ago. Bowled well to take 7 wickets @ 9.1, including an excellent 3/9 in the Preliminary Final v. WPHC. Always liked to bat at practice with Chris Vilimaa (so he wouldn’t have to face his pace bowling!) Xavier Doran – After playing under-age last season with considerable success in the Normanhurst U11s, he found it a little difficult to adjust to the quicker bowling in the U13s. Worked hard at his game and showed good commitment. The best ‘team man’ in our squad – he was a pleasure to coach. Shan Yahanpath – Another new player to Normanhurst this season, Shan tried his hardest all season and defended well when he batted. He also showed that he has good potential as a leg-spinner. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the team and was proud to be a member of the U13 Premiers this year. Bruce Wood

UNDER 14 Girls

Coaches – Gillian Allport and Jacinta Richards Manager – Jenny Havyatt

The girls U14 team had an enjoyable and successful season. Some girls in the team had never played cricket before and we all journeyed to far flung parts of North Western Sydney that some of us had never been to before. The team played 10 rounds, one match was washed out, we won 4 and lost 5. Some of the results were very close and those matches were particularly exciting. The second match against Galston Glenorie was particularly rewarding to watch as Normanhurst defeated a previously undefeated team. Congratulations and thanks are due to the coaches, Gillian Allport and Jacinta Richards who gave so generously of their time and skills to help the girls learn and improve. The change over the season was immense. Gillian umpired many of the games, with Jacinta taking a turn occasionally. Thank you both for umpiring as well as coaching. The girls worked hard to improve their skills, as the season progressed some players realised that they had definite preferences for bowling or batting.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 16 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Sandra Allport was a competent and capable all rounder in the team with a batting average of 27.4, took 5 catches and was our leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an average of 5.29. Maryanne Barakat bowled consistently, had a batting average of 10, she took X wickets and 3 catches. Anna Cahill’s skills improved and she can now bowl accurately to the toes of the opposition and runs nicely between wickets. Abi Deakin was always enthusiastic about the game of cricket and encouraged a number of the girls to join the team and to watch other cricket games. Danielle England was a quiet member of the team but an upfront bowler who showed great accuracy in early games and was a formidable bowler all season. Stephanie Ferrara was a handy first slipper and a fearless batter. Lucy Havyatt was a fine strike bowler and found early in the season that she preferred the attacking ball rather than to have the bat in her hand. Lauren McFarlane gained more confidence and developed into a fantastic wicket keeper. Maddie Rosenthal had not seen a game of cricket before last October and developed into a useful fielder and bowler. Lisi Schappi joined the team half way through the season and was a welcome addition to the , with an average of 36. Jessica Simmonds played with consistency through the season. Hannah Walters showed form as an aggressive opening batter as the season progressed and caught 3. A highlight of the season for Jess Walters was a caught and bowled. Three members of the team were selected to play representative cricket for HK&HDCA and thus congratulations are due to Jessica Simmonds (U16), Sandra Allport (U14) and Maryanne Barakat (U12), whose team was successful in winning the inter-District competition. Sandra was also selected for the Emerging Blues (U15). I would like to thank the parents of the girls in the team for their help and support with bringing their daughters to matches and especially for taking their turn at scoring. Kevin and Claire Allport supported and helped in many, many ways and were a wonderful back up for a manager who knew little about cricket. Thank you very much. Caroline Hawkins took responsibility for the statistics and for getting the results to the right places at the right time. Thank you very much. Nick Ferrara and Kevin Allport umpired some matches and this essential work was much appreciated. Coach – Bryan Whitlock Manager – Lyn Cook

Our season could possibly be described as one of under-achievement. This could well be attributed to some of the opposition umpires more than our own failings. Our team really had the ability to finish in the semi finals but in a close competition finished 9th out of ten teams. However, what is most important is that everyone enjoyed the season and certainly some of the players improved out of sight. From my point of view I once again thoroughly enjoyed coaching the boys and I am already looking forward to doing so next season. It was good to see some of our players making appearances in the club’s senior D2 team, including Nishad Kulkarni, Nic Smith, Adam Whitlock, Kevin Brown and Jarrod Tulloch. Nishad, in particular, proved to be a real star, helping the team to its first Premiership. I would like to thank Lyn Cook for a great job as Manager, Jim Tulloch for looking after the season’s scoring and Kelvin Hoare for assisting with umpiring. Also thanks to every parent in the team who all made my job easy with their great support. And now for the important bit - the players: Kevin Brown scored 222 runs at an average for 55.5 to easily take out the most improved cricketer award. I am sure Kevin won’t mind me reporting that he only scored 22 runs for the whole of last season, which indicates an amazing turnaround.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 17 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Dean Cook and Liam Kendrick were consistent with the ball but I am sure they are looking forward to scoring a few more runs next season. Liam again showed his skills as wickey when he got the chance. Tom Hoare will remember his usual big hitting performance against Castle Hill where he scored a quick 42. Nishad Kulkarni had a blinder of a season with 360 runs, 9 wickets and 6 catches. His 109 on the 1st day of the season, resuming after retiring at 75 not out, was something to be remembered. Ben Lodewijcs showed some great pace with ball and his 6 in the last match of the season can’t be forgotten. Adam Parfett in his 1st season of cricket showed great promise with his lethal leg spin and a ‘3-for’ against Glenorie was a highlight. Devang Parikh being an u/15 was limited in the number of overs he could bowl but 5 wickets in only 14 overs all season shows how consistent he is. Nic Smith another u/15 scored stacks of stylish runs and a 51 against Hornsby was all class. Terrence Sparkes was again very effective with the ball and always tried hard. Jarrod Tulloch who had the wickey duties for more than half of the season did a great job. His batting held the side together on numerous occasions and his 39 not out against Mt Colah ensured the win. Adam Whitlock took 8 wickets to just miss out on the bowling prize but his left arm orthodox continues to impress. Adam had a leaner than usual season with the bat but a 31 not out against Hornsby gave us a tie in the most exciting game of the year. Bryan Whitlock Awards: Batting & Bowling Award: Nishad Kulkarni Most Consistent Bowler: Devang Parikh Most Improved Player: Kevin Brown

UNDER 15

Coaches – John Sowden and Dennis Salisbury Manager – Phil Sherley

The 2000-2001 season started with a great deal of promise due to our great improvements in the previous year and the return of two players, Ram Bhat and Andrew Burgess. However this was not to be the case due to players leaving the district, school commitments, job changes, illness and knee operations. We were reduced to seven players and had to really battle it out towards the end of the season. The team was disappointed to lose Tom and Tim Sowden half way through the season due to their family relocating. Highlights of the season include Matt Christensen's fine batting, Matt Salisbury's bowling and Rob Aldersley's all round play including four catches in one innings against Kissing Point (no he wasn't wicket-keeping!). Other highpoints included the team play and spirit of Andrew Doherty and the good form of Ram Bhat and Andrew Burgess who returned after a season off. Michael Leahy's batting improved dramatically during the season, Nicholas Sherley's fielding continued to save many runs. Brett Salisbury's batting was one of the strengths of the team, often holding the innings together. Samir Shah continued to bat and bowl aggressively, indeed he could be considered unlucky not to get the all rounders award. Our congratulations to all of the players who stuck through a difficult season. It was pleasing to see several of the U15's filling in the Senior teams many times during the season, often with distinction. SENIORS

D Reserve GRADE *** PREMIERS ***

Captain – Bruce Wood Vice-Captain / Manager – Bryan Whitlock

This team contained many of the players from last year’s D1 side, which came runner-up. Welcome additions to the team included three mates in their 20’s who shared ‘the house of hell’ on Pennant Hills Road. These new players, Matt Whalley, Mick Westwood and Dave Schoolderman, proved to be talented all rounders, scoring 500 runs and taking 71 wickets & 14 catches between them. They also added to the team spirit – no one will forget Davo (alias Greg Matthews) continually shouting “C’mon boys, let’s get a bit of rhythm happening – the batsman’s dancing”. The D2 team had an excellent season, winning 12 matches (4 outright), drawing 1 match (washed out), and losing just 1 game (a one- dayer, 40 overs a side). We finished Minor Premiers, won a close Semi, then scored a great 7-wicket outright victory in the Final v. Beecroft at The Glade to secure NCC’s first ever D2 title.

The season started sensationally when the Captain and V-C combined on day 1 for an incredible record 5th wicket partnership of 320 runs, scoring at 6.1 runs per over for 4 hours. Bryan Whitlock (178 no) and Bruce Wood (138 no) scored the first centuries of their careers on the hottest day of the season o (40 C), resulting in Bryan ending up in Hornsby Hospital on an intravenous drip for 24 hours. The team won this match by a huge margin of 307 runs and continued in this dominant vein. Our fast bowling was lead by Matt Whalley, who took 27 wickets @ 10.15, including a hat trick in the first half of the season, before going overseas. Matt also scored 221 runs @ 36.8, with a highest score of 87 in his first innings for Normanhurst. Fortunately, he was very capably replaced by Cameron Riddett when his HSC commitments were over. Cameron took 23 wickets @ 11.7 (best figures 5/30) in the second half of the season and was very accurate, bowling 44 maidens out of his 124 overs. He bowled magnificent in-swingers in the Semi & Final and was the spear-head of our attack, being almost unplayable at times. A very good team man. Rob Magrath, a 16 year old all rounder, was our star leg-spinner, taking 43 wickets @ 13.9, including a hat trick (6/7). He scored 276 runs @ 27.6 (highest score 66), plus he took 13 great catches. This performance easily won him the NCC Senior Cricketer of the Year Award. John Magrath came out of retirement, mainly for the opportunity to wicket-keep to his champion son, Rob’s spin bowling. He did a great job, taking 14 catches (including the match-winner in the close Semi-final v. Berowra) and effecting 3 stumpings. Our bowlers really appreciated having a specialist wicket-keeper in the team this season. Thanks John – you may now return to Lawn Bowls. Our batting contained depth for this Grade and our best and most consistent batsman was the wily veteran, John Simmons, who scored 410 runs @ 29.3, with high scores of 73, 71 & 62, including 16 sixers. Simmo put fear into bowlers’ heads with his ferocious straight drives. He took 11 catches and also used his vast A Grade experience to assist the Captain with field placements and team tactics. Mick Westwood had a good season, scoring 181 runs @ 25.9 (HS 79) and taking 18 wickets. He is a great team man and is very popular amongst his team-mates. Dave Schoolderman showed flashes of brilliance, twice taking 7 wickets in a match. In all, he took 26 wickets @ 11.9 and 9 good catches. Rod Harvie played on a part-time basis this season, however made some important contributions, scoring 53 against St Ives and a vital 18 and 31 not out in the Final on a tricky turf wicket. Neil Culleton had the difficult job of opening batsman for much of the season and usually managed to work the shine off the new ball. He top-scored with 30 against Wahroonga in Round 8 and was a great team man, always putting the interests of the team before his own. Andrew Thomson bowled some useful medium-pacers, taking 8 wickets @ 15.5. He again put his body on the line, ending up in hospital after being belted in the chest at ‘short leg’ against Kenthurst. The team was fortunate to gain the services of two very talented junior players for the second half of the season. Nishad Kulkarni topped the team’s batting averages as a 13 year old, scoring 154 runs @ 38.5, with a highest score of 63 on debut.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 19 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Nishad also scored a determined 35 against WPHC when he combined with Bruce Wood (63) in a match-winning partnership of 91 runs to secure the Minor Premiership. Nishad’s 2-wicket maiden in the Final v. Beecroft swung the game firmly our way. Rob Aldersley (aged 14) also showed his obvious all round ability, scoring 74 against Kenthurst and an invaluable 23 in 3 hours in the tough Semi against Berowra’s fast bowlers. Rob took 15 wickets @ 6.1, taking at least one wicket in all 9 innings in which he bowled. He also took 6 catches, many of them spectacular efforts. Rob and Nishad contributed strongly to the team’s successful Premiership. Like Rob Magrath and Cameron, they have the potential to go a long way in the game.

Thanks to the many other part-time players who played in the D2 team during the season, including John Kerr, Gordon Sutcliffe, Frank Lemckert, Ulf Varding, Nic Smith, Brett Salisbury and Adam Whitlock. In addition, thanks to the juniors who sub-fielded on occasions, including Kevin Brown, Jarrod Tulloch, Mitchell Magrath and Joel Carter.

I would particularly like to thank Bryan Whitlock for the great job he did as V-C, Manager / Selector of our team. His assistance and wise counsel were invaluable to me and the team as a whole. It took 14 regulars and another 7 part-time / ‘casual’ players to get us through the competition rounds in 1st place, however only 11 (and a 12th man) could play in the Final. Bad luck to those not selected in the team for the Final – the Premiership was won on behalf of the entire D2 squad and the club. Bruce Wood Awards: Batting Award: John Simmons 410 runs @ 29.3 Bowling Award: Matt Whalley 27 wickets @ 10.15 All Rounder Award: Rob Magrath 43 wickets; 276 runs; 13 catches

C Reserve GRADE *** PREMIERS *** Captain – Chris Hawkins

"We are the champions" Well what an absolutely memorable year, this team has been rock solid all year and it paid off with a premiership. After the disappointment of coming bottom of the ladder last year in C's turning it around in 2000-01 brought a smile to each of the blokes faces. Each of the guys played their own little part this year helping us win the title that has eluded Normo for over 40 years. The final was played on turf at Turramurra Oval against a confident WPHC side and we bowled them out on day 1 for a very solid 229 on a batsmen's pitch. Plenty of dropped catches didn’t help our cause either. WPHC needed to beat us to win it we only needed to draw because of our respective positions on the table. We batted for 19 overs at the end of day 1 finishing at 1 for 63. Day 2 saw some of the most intense and focused batting our team has ever produced and at the right time. For 80 odd dogged overs we blocked, belted, and bamboozled the opposition and reached 7 for 232, they then had no time to force an outright win and Normo were then crowned champions. This win was the most satisfying of the year, because everyone was focused and determined to smash it home. Every one played their role, and everything clicked. Well done lads top effort!!

The year saw plenty of memorable moments, whether it be Greg Ford's 165 no out of the team total of 250 v. Castle Hill in the semi (his second ton of the year) or the blatant disregard Andrew Flarey had for a hat trick ball, that was honing in on his pegs, smashing it to the long off fence for four to get us home v. Kenthurst. It will be hard to beat Andrew Burns' most focused knock of the year of 67 v. WPHC in the final to set up the win. He also made his first ton this year making 108 v. A.R.L in round 2. Rookie sensation, Rocco Giaquinto, had a terrific second half of the season, taking most of his 27 wickets in the last few games, including 5 in both the semi and final. Trevor Sharpham again had a top year with the gloves taking many awesome catches, so many that we actually lost count. Our other rookie at the ripe age of 26, Simon Hardy, had a consistent first year making a pack of runs and also made a valuable 52 no v. Kenthurst to win us the game. Luck got the better of man mountain, unit of a bloke Patty Muldrew this year.

Normanhurst Cricket Club 20 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Pat was forced out half way during the year with a broken foot, but our short leg made numerous saves and a few brilliant reflex catches to dismiss some pretty decent batters. His older brother Nick Muldrew, or Mazza as he was known to the lads, had a up and down year with both bat and ball but the stand out performance was his 4 for 40 v. Glenorie in round 5. Our most improved and fielder of the year, Michael Thomas, had a top season, making countless saves and plenty of catches at the difficult position of gully. He also made his top score ever smashing his way to 41 v. Glenorie. The score of 41 was a popular one with Matty Bowen making this his top knock also against Glenorie. Matt also took his first wickets ever, taking 2 for 10 v. WPHC in round 3.

Our most consistent bowler had to be Geoff 'give me that new pill' Gardiner taking 31 invaluable wickets at a respectable average of 14.5. Geoff made a solid 25 v. A.R.L in round 2 for his top score of the year. Mark Pritchard only managed to play a couple of games due to work commitments but when he played he put in 110% with both bat and ball. Our victorious and ecstatic captain Chris Hawkins had a solid year taking wickets and getting plenty of runs. But his memorable innings of 55 in the final, he claimed was his best and most important knock, led the team to an amazing win and capped the season off in style.

I would also like to thank our stats man and scorer John Burns who gave up his time every Saturday afternoon. We truly do appreciate the work you did mate and we just can’t thank you enough. Cheers mate! Also like to thank Phil Sherley for letting our team pinch some of his U/15 blokes when we needed them. Again thank you Phil! Lastly, well done lads on a top year hope we can smash it home again next year in the 2001-2002 season. See you all next year!!!! C1 GRADE

Captain – Anthony Maxworthy Manager – Graham Skulander

After a season where the amount injuries (in brackets) to team members seemed to be greater than the amount of total runs scored, it was fabulous to perform strongly ending the season in second place. Unfortunately our run ended in the semi final, going down to Beecroft by 40 runs in a tightly contested match. The team consisted of a varied group of men, some who had never played before, some who had not played for the entire life of some of the other players, and some who had played competitively previously, but not for many years. Even though it was John Green’s (strained groin muscle) first year back to cricket for some years, he had a great year with the ball, topping the wicket tally with 24 scalps and claiming the C1 bowling prize. It was also John Corish’s (hamstring, “oh dear it’s hit him in the groin”) first year back for many years and he showed excellent grit and determination at the top of the batting order to perform very consistently. The highlights were the two 50’s John scored throughout the year. Stewart Johnson (heat exhaustion, ongoing shoulder injury) shared the opening batting with John and after scoring 93 not out in the first game, also played consistently and contributed to the overall performance of the team, offering our captain shrewd and relevant advice during the games. Our illustrious captain, Anthony Maxworthy (thumb) had a terrific year with the bat gaining the team batting award for his figures being 386 runs at an average of 32.2. Of these runs Anthony scored 2 centuries and an 83. When he got to double figures, he would usually go on to make a good score. It was Brendan Robards (young and fit ba**ard!!!) first year in senior cricket and his enthusiasm and keenness rubbed off onto the rest of the team. His anticipation when fielding in close paid handsome dividends when in the semi final, he took one of the best close in catches you will ever see. On the same day Brendan took another catch in close that rivalled the brilliance of the first one, but unfortunately it was off a no-ball because the ball had bounced 3 times before it got to the batsman (the bowler shall remain nameless!)

Normanhurst Cricket Club 21 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season

Lindsay Cooke (toe) joined the team in round 4 and his fiery fast bowling brought great rewards taking a 5 wicket haul in his third game. Lindsay’s figures would have been much better had the many chances he created, stuck or gone to hand. His quiet advice to opposing batsmen was often quite relevant and very amusing. After a number of seasons away from cricket, Graham Skulander (finger, shoulder, hamstring) showed he was still reliable behind the stumps and solid with the bat. Trevor Austin (hamstring) had a thoroughly enjoyable season putting great value on his wicket when batting and good control when bowling. Trevor affected a great run out scoring a direct hit on the stumps to dismiss the batsman. Dave Cross (hamstring) combined his controlled aggression with accuracy and skill to finish the year strongly. He bowled consistently, picking up vital wickets when needed and batted strongly to score regular runs. Dave was a deserved winner of the all round trophy with a batting average of 26.9 and bowling average of 13.7. Until Andrew Fullagar’s untimely knee injury forced him out for 4 rounds, he was a contender for the both the batting and bowling awards, performing aggressively with the bat, with a top score 82 and bowling quickly and accurately with his best bowling figures of 4 for 16. It must be mentioned that some of the catches Andy took at second slip were quite miraculous. Andrew Morris (back, ankle, hamstring, knee) played his first season since junior cricket. His ability to swing the ball not only astounded the batsman but Andrew as well. One of the highlights of the year was watching Andrew umpire at square leg, holding the broom in one hand, talking on his mobile phone (I’ll be home soon honey!) and giving a run out with his elbow. Grant Rickard (leg) showed solid batting ability until his work commitments unfortunately cut his season short. Simon Riddett joined the team in our hour of need and proved a great asset to the team. He often opened the bowling with good pace and accuracy and handled himself confidently with the bat, highlighted by a terrific last wicket stand to score the winning runs in a close match against St Ives. Special thanks goes to Tim Nelson, Scott Richards (finger), Jamie Weir, Alister Simpson (knee), Greg Lynch and Ashley Sutton who filled in when needed, as did three promising junior players, Nishad Kulkarni, Rob Aldersley and Brett Salisbury. Finally, thanks must also go to ERIC because without him, the end of each days play would just not have been the same. Graham Skulander
