PRESENTATION NIGHT Friday, 18th May 2001 ANNUAL REPORT SEASON 2000-2001 Established in 1926 (Foundation Club in HK&HDCA) A DIVISION OF NORMANHURST SPORTS CLUB Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season PRESIDENT’S REPORT A very warm welcome to all cricketers of Normanhurst, their families and friends. After a successful registration, the club formed a record number of 18 teams, plus a Kanga squad of 28 players. We fielded 15 Junior teams, comprising four Under 10 (Average), two Under 10 (Limited), two Under 11, two Under 12, two Under 13, one Under 14 (boys), one Under 14 (girls) and one Under 15. We also fielded three Senior teams in C1, C2 and D2 competitions. The 2000-2001 season, which began in October (a little later than usual due to the Sydney Olympics), has been one of the most successful seasons in the club's history. The highlights of the season are listed later in this annual report, however some of the more notable achievements include: • 3 x HK&HDCA Premierships (one junior and two senior competitions – a record for NCC); • first win in the U13 competition and first junior Premiership for any age group since 1985-86; • 3 teams entered in the HK&HDCA senior competitions; all made the Semis and two became Premiers (first ever D2 competition win; first C2 Premiership since 1959-60); • a record 17 District rep. players (14 boys and 3 girls); and • new corporate sponsorship from Tricon, marketing KFC restaurants (thanks to Gus Hearl). These achievements have been very positive for the club, however one of the most pleasing aspects is the significant increase of 35% in registered players from 178 to 240 – a record number of players for NCC. More local children now play Saturday cricket for NCC than ever before in our history. The success Normanhurst has enjoyed this season has not happened overnight – the club has been steadily rebuilding over the past 3 seasons. The previous club President, Keith Carter, and his committee laid the foundations for Normanhurst’s rise to prominence and my committee has continued the momentum and introduced some new initiatives this season. Thanks Keith for your work for the club over the previous 2 seasons. I would like to thank my hard-working Committee for their efforts this season. Bryan Whitlock has been Vice-President for the past 3 years and has been a very big help to me in running the club this year, including organising the club’s photos. Graeme (Gus) Hearl has been an effective Secretary for the club for the same period. Peter Vilimaa has balanced our books as Treasurer since 1998-99, as well as doing all the banking and cheques. I have performed the role of Equipment Officer for the last 3 years. Genevieve Liepa was appointed as Uniforms Officer this season and has been tireless in her efforts to distribute shirts to players and officials. Jaye Waldegrave came on board as Registrar and maintained the lists of players in the various teams. Neil Culleton single-handedly performed the role of Keys Officer, opening, cleaning and closing the dressing rooms nearly every Saturday and Sunday during the season (previously we had a roster to share this job). Andrew Thomson has been a willing helper in a number of areas. Jamie Weir took over the role of Kanga Co-ordinator this season and developed an enthusiastic squad of 28 children who enjoyed learning about cricket. Normanhurst Cricket Club 2 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season The Annual General Meeting is to be held at Normanhurst Clubhouse, Harris Road, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 6th June 2001. It is expected that the entire Executive Committee (President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer) and the Equipment Officer will be vacating their posts after 3 years service to Normanhurst CC. We need new people to come on board and take over the running of our club. It is a rewarding experience so please attend the AGM and think about how you can contribute to the club. Thanks to all the coaches, managers, scorers and assistants, as the club could not function without your efforts every week and our children would not learn the enjoyment of the great game of cricket. An explanation of the club’s awards and trophies appears below. The Committee has agreed to the introduction of two new perpetual trophies and two new honour boards this year. In order to promote girls’ cricket at the club, a new perpetual trophy for Female Cricketer of the Year is being introduced. It has been decided to name this award as the Karen Price Trophy, in honour of Karen Hill (nee Price), who represented Australia in women’s cricket, rising to the position of Vice-captain in 1984. In between her stints in the Australian team, she played for Normanhurst CC for 7 seasons in the 1970s. She played in the men’s competition and took over 200 wickets for our club in A and B Grades. Karen was invited along tonight, however she was unavailable as she is receiving a special award at a dinner at NSW Parliament House tonight. It is hoped that she may attend next year. Another perpetual trophy being introduced this year is for the Normanhurst CC Team of the Year. I have donated this trophy as it was recognised that we have many trophies for individuals to aim for, but none for teams. The club’s Executive Committee will determine the winning team each season. The Committee also agreed to the introduction of two new honour boards for display on the Clubhouse walls. The bowling honour board lists players who have taken a Hat Trick or 7 wickets in an innings in competitive cricket. The batting honour board lists our century- makers from this season onwards. We have decided to name the batting honour board as the Bill Kemsley Centuries Shield, after our most famous former player. Bill Kemsley played for Thornleigh and later Normanhurst Cricket Clubs from 1956 to 1973 and scored a record 27 centuries in A Grade. He was recently named in the Association’s 75th Anniversary Report as the best player to have played in the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association’s (HK&HDCA) senior competition. Bill played in 13 A Grade Grand Finals and recalls that one of his most memorable achievements was in 1971-72 when Normanhurst finally defeated the strong Hornsby CC team to become A Grade Premiers, after being runner- up to Hornsby 5 seasons in a row. We are delighted that Bill has attended tonight. We are fortunate in having another special guest presenter here tonight. Ann Lofts is the current President of Normanhurst Sports Club and the former President of Normanhurst Netball Division. She has accepted my invitation to present some of our awards tonight. Bruce Wood President Normanhurst Cricket Club 3 Annual Report — 2000-2001 Season CLUB TROPHIES An explanation of this year’s club awards and trophies is as follows: • Each new junior starting his or her cricket with Normanhurst is presented with a personalised “plaque”. Each season after that, a new plate is presented to be added to their plaque. • Each Junior team Manager / Coach awards 3 team trophies to recognise special achievements. • The team Manager / Coach also nominate players for the Club trophies, from which the winners are selected by the Executive Committee. • Any player who achieves a hat-trick during the season is presented with the ball mounted. • Any player who achieves a century during the season is presented with a signature bat. • Any player that has played for five (or ten) years with NCC is presented with a medal. • All players in teams that win their competition are presented with a Premiership medal. • Any player who represented HK&HDCA in rep. cricket is presented with a medal. The new C1 senior team did very well to make the semi-finals in their first season together and the C2 & D2 teams did even better, becoming Premiers.
