4 Academy Awards: Notes

Players may be nominated for representative cricket in Essex or Cambridgeshire if they are considered ready to perform at such a level. However, playing at this level relies on commitment as well as talent. If you feel you would like to be considered or if you feel you or your parents cannot make this commitment, please speak to your manager.

Highest batting average min. 5 innings/Lowest min. 10 overs. Because young players play so few matches we don’t insist on 5 ‘completed’ innings before they qualify with an average. This is not the case in senior cricket. Please note that a more accurate picture of performance can be gained the more overs bowled or the more innings batted. A low minimum has been chosen to involve as many players as possible in the statistics. Overall batting and bowling awards are made by managers in consultation with coaches and others. There are no definitive criteria.

Club caps awarded to any established Academy player taking 5 in one match (including 5 stumpings and/or catches by a keeper), scoring a century, playing at County level or being a first choice selection for the senior SWCC teams or village teams with whom SWCC have a formal arrangement. From 2009 Club caps will be awarded to girls for taking 3 wicket/catches, scoring 50 in a match and for County or adult selection.

Players’ Player may be awarded on the basis of Player of the Match nominations over the course of a season or a vote amongst other squad members.

Academy records have been compiled since 2003. There may well be superior performances before that – just let us know.

The Alfred Adams Batting Award. Alfred Adams scored 279 by batting all day against Bishop’s Stortford for SWCC on the Common on 11 July 1837. At the time it was the highest recorded individual score in the country. Fiona Harris was the first woman to play competitively for SWCC in 2002. She still plays for SWCC when she can. John Smith first played for SWCC in 1946 and retired in 1963 at the age of 35. He now lives in Chelmsford. He is the tallest of the team in many of the clubhouse photos of the 1950s and 60s. Josh Bysouth was an u13 Academy player when he died in a car accident with his Grandfather in 2012

Academician of the Year is awarded to the academy player who has made the strongest commitment to his or her own development and to the work of the Academy and Club. It may be related to the “Clubman of the Year” award for each age group.

Jack Petchey Awards are given for outstanding personal achievement. Winners receive a certificate, a medallion and £200 to be spent on the club.

We currently do not issue individual medals or trophies, preferring to issue certificates. This maximises involvement and keeps costs low. However, sponsors for individual trophies shown on the previous page are always welcome.

9 Squad 2014 under 16

Manager Peter Hill Coach Niraj Odedra Spencer Hill Vice Captains Jonny Brace/Ollie Barnes Review of season Creating a MatchPlay squad of 20 players drawn from the U16s and the U15s allowed us to use the best of the Academy’s resources and winning the MatchPlay for the first time in the Club’s history says it all! Whilst games during the season were dominated by some quite brilliant individual performances which saw records tumble yet again, the final game at the County Ground in Chelmsford saw a fantastic all round team performance. It was also a credit to the club that so many parents, supporters and our coaches were there to see it – a sincere thank you to you all and our sponsors, Pellys, Veolia and Andy Barnes. The stats look like the Jonny Brace show but we should remember those that batted with him some massive partnerships and the fielders and other bowlers that supported him.

Then, an undefeated opening partnership of 242 between Jonny & Mike saw us breeze past Woodford Wells. Squad 2014 Under 15 Manager Glyn & Michele Thomas Coach Niraj Odedra Captains Callum Sparrow, Alexander Thomas, Jack Ormsby, Josh Marsh Review of season: 2014 was a very successful season. The team won the West Essex league, West Essex cup and narrowly lost in the quarter finals of the Essex Cup. This was a solid team performance with every player making significant contributions and providing many magic moments, including winning the cup with test umpire Steve Davis officiating for us.

Squad 2014 under 14

Manager Paul Gadd Coach Nigel Tegg Captains Various Review of season: 2014 This season we entered two teams. The B team played in the CYCA U14 league and, because of the shortage of other leagues, the A team played in a CYCA U15 league. The B team came 3/7, which was probably a fair reflection. The A team were placed in a very strong CYCA league and acquitted themselves admirably, finishing 2/6, with the highlight being a victory over a full-strength Granta U15 team. In the CYCA U15 cup we reached the semi-finals before losing to Cambridge St Giles. We fielded 30 players in total, including 3 new faces, and played a total of 19 games.

Manager K Wendelken/ C Coach Kevin Duers Hancock/S Temblett Captains By Rotation Review of season: This year we played in three competitions; CYCA, West Essex League (North) and the Essex Peter Coe Cup (this using a mixture of U13’s and U12’s, mainly county/ district players). In the CYCA we came up against strong opposition in the form of Cambs. Granta & St Giles, only winning 2/6 games. In the West Essex league the season was really disappointing, because we played so few matches; this due to the weather and opposition sides conceding without playing. In this league we should have played 11 but we ended up playing only 5 (3 League / 2 Cup). However, after the conceded matches had been allocated results we ended up in second place in the league and reached the semi-finals of the cup. In the Peter Coe Cup, we again had some strong opposition. Out of 7 group matches scheduled, we played 5, winning 2 and losing 3. With two matches not played, one was conceded to us and the other had the points shared. Final group position was joint third out of seven. Along with some u12s the team came joint 3rd. in the Burwell 6-a-side.

Squad 2014 under 12 Managers Steve Temblett, Duncan Coach Steve Oakey Pluck, Kevin Clarke Captain Louis Temblett Vice captain Harry Ball Review of season: A really successful season all round – CYCA U13F Joint League champions, CYCA U12 League 4th in League; and Hugh Craig League champions – the U12A were only beaten once in 18 CYCA & HC matches and the U12B squad won half of their games. All players in the huge (28+) squad played at least a couple of competitive matches through the season, with 22 of these also playing in the HC League campaign, and all who played showed great teamwork, commitment and spirit. Alex Albright had an excellent bowling economy rate of 2.8 whist Bertie Scott bowled the least number of extras

Managers Georgina Haupt & Jason Hale Coach Niraj Odjera Captain Various Vice captain Various Review of season: We entered 3 leagues – CYCA , WEDCB, & West Essex Terrier plus 2 cup competitions. We started slowly but finished the season winning more than we lost. Our best position was joint second in the Terrier League. We fielded 36 players this season, including a number of new squad members, some of whom had never played hard ball cricket before, making the above all the more pleasing. Most pleasing, however, was that no matter what team we put out, the boys played as a team encouraging each other and always conducted themselves excellently.

Squad 2014 Crocus

Manager Annette and Paul Coach Kevin Duers Leeman Ben Nash Captain Vice Captain Review of season The Crocus team plays in the Essex Disability and Community Trust League organised by Essex County Cricket Club. There are four teams in the league currently - Basildon, Harold Wood, Saffron Walden and Springfield - with the hope that more will become involved as time goes on. Tournaments are held throughout the year with indoor cricket in February and April and then moving outdoors for the summer. They are played in a competitive but friendly manner with players often being borrowed between teams and an atmosphere of mutual support and friendship is very much in evidence. Crocus itself is still small in numbers but has a core of very enthusiastic players who continue to develop in strength and technique, so much so that Crocus gained its first ever overall tournament win in August this year, a long awaited and very proud moment for the team! Thanks must go to Kevin Duers for coaching the team this summer, Josh Beaumont for his winter coaching and to Daniel Thomas for his commitment in helping to coach the team throughout the year and also running a lunch time session at the County High School. Also thanks to all the parents who have helped in any way, particularly with transport when required. rd We won the Harold Wood Tournament and came 3 out of 4 teams overall.

We won 2 games beating Thriplow and St.Giles convincingly. With excellent batting from all the girls but particularly a Evie & Victoria. The girls continue to gain praise for their excellent fielding & team spirit. Entertaining the opposition on & off the pitch with their humour & determination. Squad 2014 Under 10

Manager Matt Clare – CYCA Coach Tony Wiseman Grahame Wood - WEDCB Captain Rotated Vice Captain Rotated Review of season A great second season of league cricket for this group saw the squad expanded to 35 boys, all of whom featured in one or more match or tournament. Good progress was made by every single player, whilst enjoying their cricket and generally having fun. The cricket played was quite superb all season with just one defeat in the CYCA league. All other league games were won, resulting in the U10s being league champions in each of the WEDCB hardball and CYCA softball formats. Well done to all the boys.

19 Squad 2014 under 9

Manager: Darren Cox Coach Steve Atherton Assistant: James Legg Captain Taegan Chapman Review of season - Saffron Walden under 9's have had a great 2014 season. The coaching sessions run by Steve Atherton with help from Darren, James and Matt Rowlandson were very well attended. It is obvious when watching the under 9's play matches against other teams how much their fielding has improved due to the drills they do on a Sunday morning with Steve. We were blessed with good weather throughout and only one coaching session was cancelled due to rain. SWCC hosted a Rainbow cricket tournament on the evening of Friday 11th July. This was a huge success with over a dozen teams playing quick cricket on 4 pitches. SW under 8/9's fielded 3 teams of 8 players for this tournament. Our thanks go to Sniper the groundsman for his help with this and for providing us with 16 yard wickets throughout the year. In the West Essex Terrier league the under 9's won every game and therefore won the league. In all 24 boys and girls played for SWCC over 6 matches. All players not only played to an exceptional standard but their behaviour both on and off field was a credit to the club. Taegan Chapman also set a great example as captain for 5 of the 6 matches.
