4 Academy Awards: Notes

Players may be nominated for representative in Essex or Cambridgeshire if they are considered ready to perform at such a level. However, playing at this level relies on commitment as well as talent. If you feel you would like to be considered or if you feel you or your parents cannot make this commitment, please speak to your manager.

Highest batting average min. 5 /Lowest min. 10 overs. Because young players play so few matches we don’t insist on 5 ‘completed’ innings before they qualify with an average. This is not the case in senior cricket. Please note that a more accurate picture of performance can be gained the more overs bowled or the more innings batted. A low minimum has been chosen to involve as many players as possible in the statistics. Overall batting and bowling awards are made by managers in consultation with coaches and others. There are no definitive criteria.

Club caps awarded to any established Academy player taking 5 in one match (including 5 stumpings and/or catches by a keeper), scoring a century, playing at County level or being a first choice selection for the senior SWCC teams or village teams with whom SWCC have a formal arrangement. From 2009 Club caps will be awarded to girls for taking 3 wicket/catches, scoring 50 in a match and for County or adult selection.

Players’ Player may be awarded on the basis of Player of the Match nominations over the course of a season or a vote amongst other squad members.

Academy records have been compiled since 2003. There may well be superior performances before that – just let us know.

The Alfred Adams Batting Award. Alfred Adams scored 279 by batting all day against Bishop’s Stortford for SWCC on the Common on 11 July 1837. At the time it was the highest recorded individual score in the country. Fiona Harris was the first woman to play competitively for SWCC in 2002. She still plays for SWCC when she can. John Smith first played for SWCC in 1946 and retired in 1963 at the age of 35. He is the tallest of the team in many of the clubhouse photos of the 1950s and 60s. John passed away in 2009

Josh Bysouth was an u13 Academy player when he died in a car accident with his Grandfather in 2012

Academician of the Year is awarded to the academy player who has made the strongest commitment to his or her own development and to the work of the Academy and Club. It may be related to the “Clubman of the Year” award for each age group.

Jack Petchey Awards were given for outstanding personal achievement 2006-2015. The club withdrew from the scheme in 2015 – it did not recognise youngsters under the age of 11 and the criteria for awards became unduly restrictive. It has been replaced from this season with the Rajapack Award Scheme sponsored by Rajapack (www.rajapack.co.uk). The club will receive £100 for every century, 3 catches and 5 wickets in a single match in senior cricket from u16 upwards. We will also receive £100 for every 50 and 5fer and 3 catches in junior T20 cricket and similarly £100 for every 30, 3 wickets and 2 catches in girls and Crocus cricket. In junior T20 matches played with a “retire after 30 runs” rule, then a Rajapack award goes to players getting 30 runs in each of two matches We currently do not issue individual medals or trophies, preferring to issue certificates. This maximises involvement and keeps costs low. However, sponsors for individual trophies shown on the previous page are always welcome.

Manager Coach Captains Vice Captain Review of season: 2018 was a very frustrating and disappointing season for the U16s with all but one of the Matchplay games scheduled during GCSE exams, and also clashing with age group fixtures at lower age-groups meaning that we could only field a competitive team for the final group- stage match at Fives & Heronians - but what a swan song it turned out to be - batting first and putting on 384 - with 130 from Nikhil and 83 from Bertie, and then bowling Fives our for 112 with braces from Louis & Henry - a taste of what could have been!! (Editor’s note: Despite winning this competition two years ago, the scheduling of fixtures during the GCSE exam period has meant that only the one game was played and therefore no awards are being made. Most u16s, however, are part of the senior set up and their achievements later in the season may still be acknowledged)

Manager Darren Leech Coach Nigel Tegg Captains W Barnett (9), A Keys (3) and S Leech (1). Review of season Joint winners of CYCA U15 Premier League (tied with Mildenhall) and the West Essex District U15 League (tied with Harlow and SWCC B). Played 13, lost 2 league games and cup semi-final. I am keen to see young players engage and enjoy cricket - I think we achieved that in 2018. Thank you to Iain Keys, Tim Rumsey and Vijay Gorantla for umpiring and all parents who helped with of teas for home games, taxis to away games and with tolerance of pleading email/calls about availability !

A proud moment for the club and an example to all junior (and senior) cricketers. Promising A Keys – a new member of the squad who stepped up as captain in the latter part of the season. Sets the Newcomer right tone for conduct and consistently batted, bowled and fielded well in all fixtures played. Manager Matt Clare & Vince Taylor Coach Mark Thompson Captain Liam Mays & Alex Peirson Vice-captain On rotation Review of Season: A busy season with 28 games played and 28 players involved. It was difficult to follow the highs of the Peter Coe Cup run last year but when motivated and focussed the boys were a match for anyone. The key is getting and keeping 13 years old boys focussed. Several players now blooded in senior cricket. Home matches played at Rickling Green and Audley End were a highlight.

Review of season : The 2018 season has been characterized by an ever growing girl’s squad, plenty of competitive match play and a high standard of cricket which resulted in four records being broken! The overall ability of the squad has never been higher. The team consisting of 50% new and existing players wonderfully demonstrates the inclusive and supportive character of the squad.

Manager Matt Rowlandson Coach Tom Rodda, Seb Contos, Niraj Odedra Captain Noah Vintiner Review of season: We are all very proud of the squad, how they presented/conducted themselves, played the game in a professional and honest way and represented SWCC. Every player improved immensely and each one has had an important role to play to get us through each stage to win this prestigious competition. Player friendships formed which brought the squad very close together, supporting one another, having fun, whilst concentrating and focusing on the task of improving. The players created an amazing squad during this summer and they have all been a pleasure to work with, manage and coach. Thanks to all the parents for being the boys summer taxi’s and for creating the best cricket teas in Essex. We have a huge summer next year to look forward to, when we represent Essex and SWCC in the ECB National Trophy

Captain By rotation Vice Captain none Review of season We entered the WEDCB Terrier League and the CYCA Regional League. As new managers we were really keen to build on the work Phil had started last year in reducing the number of wickets lost due to run outs, and runs given away from over throws. The team made much progress in both areas thanks to some great training drills. Their excellent coaching, combined with the boys’ willingness to learn led to a significantly improved squad as the season progressed and we developed a really strong bowling line-up in particular. In the CYCA Regional league, after a difficult few opening matches, we managed to start winning and finished a creditable 7th in the league. In the WEDCB Terriers we excelled and lost just 1 game in the whole season to win the league, and reached the final of the WEDCB U11 cup. However with a small squad, fulfilling all of the fixtures was a challenge at times. But with the support of the U10s (particular nod to Jack Howard who was almost a regular for us), the U9s, and Sirisha Gorantla from the girls’ team, we were able to put a team out for every game. Finally, big thanks to Darren Diggons for all the help, guidance and especially umpiring!

Review of season We still have one tournament to play in. So far it has been a fantastic season of progress and we have had 5 new players joining, all making the step up with key contributions. Some special moments were Ethan and Josh’s batting hitting 12 runs in the last over to win a game at our home match, Tom Abrey getting a wicket nearly every match he has played, and we have also had a 42-run partnership by Josh & Ethan. In the field we have had our best year with some special catching and everyone in the team contributing - one stand out is Troy taking 3 catches in a match. The senior players have performed very well, leading by example, and keeping Saffron Walden Crocus in the title picture all the way throughout the season and showing some true leadership qualities.. Saffron Walden is playing some really exciting cricket which has been fun to watch and see the players grow in confidence. I would like to say a big thank you to the coaches Gareth and Alex and all the parents.

Captain Vice Captain Review of season: We have had a hugely enjoyable 1st season as a squad. There have been a number of new starters mixing with the more experienced and the balance has worked really well. As the season has gone on the group have become more enthusiastic and are understanding the league and the positions if they win which has helped them all develop. We have had some really exciting and close matches, none more so than the final game of the season which ended as a draw with the U9 team. The festival at Harlow was a great success and the friendlies with Wendens allowed us to bring on a number of players for their first matches which helped all tie in the training to an actual game situation. Cracking season and looking forward to winning the league next year!
