YOULDEN CRICKETER’S ALMANAC 2018-19 A STATISTICAL REVIEW OF YOULDEN PARKVILLE C.C. FOR THE SEASON 2018-19 FOREWORD Season 2018-19 saw very few changes to the leadership team from the previous season with all six captains from last season retaining their positions and David Heddle replacing Neil Grey as an assistant coach being the only change to the coaching setup. Whereas last season we had three teams make the finals this season we disappointingly only had the 2nd X1 make the finals. The upside however was that after 3 losing grand finals in the last 4 seaons for the 2nd X1 they went on to play two very tight finals games and prevailed on Ryder Oval to win the first Senior flag in 3 seasons against Indigos. The Powerful Owls program continued to build on their success from the previous year to again feature in the finals. The Club fielded 14 junior teams for the season, up three on last season, including two girls team. Both of these numbers were records for YP. Nine of the eleven teams that played for points played in the finals, with the 14(3) Friday side coming the closest to a flag being defeated grand finalists. Overall there were approximately 160 (down from about 170 last year) juniors involved in the Powerful Owls program, which is a great sign for the future of the Club. A whopping 101 senior players strutted their stuff for YP (down from 123 from last season) and all of them are featured in this almanac. We had 19 players who made their YPCC debuts this season, including another 5 from the junior program (Dillon Barrett, James Dagiandas, Lachlan Kennedy, Thomas Leury and Akshith Sriram), making it 41 in the last six seasons. Unlike last season where we had ten visitors from overseas this year we did not have one meaning all of our players lived locally. Some of the new players moved on immediately, however 13 of them played 4 games or more. Despite have 22 less players than last season at no stage were we short of players filling our 6 elevens with between 66 and 69 players every weekend. Individual highlights occurred regularly throughout the season. Three players made triple figures during the course of the season. Jack Perkins made his first century when he made 102 against South Yarra in the 4th X1 after missing out by a single the season before. Marcus Grose made the highest score for the season when he belted 141 not out in the 3rd X1 in a comprehensive win against Ashwood on McAlister Oval. Finally, Sam Crimmins belted 140 against Burnley CYMS in the Third X1, combining with Under 16 William Madden (71*) to put on 244 to break the club partnership record for any wickets in any grade! There were thirteen five or more wicket hauls with the ball. Nilushan Nagarajah ditched the leggies and took up medium pace with great success against Thornbury Turf Strokers to take 6\17 in the 6th X1. Muhammad Kashif ran through North Balwyn in the 2nd X1 to also finish with 6\17. In his first game of Senior cricket a 12 year old Akshith Sriram made mess of a cocky Barnawartha North’s middle and lower order in the fifth X1 taking 5\10 and reducing them from 1\84 to all out 106 and a 20 run win. Akshith did even better in his 4th game of Senior cricket taking 6\30 to go with his 39 unbeaten runs in a losing 4th X1 team against a strong Indigos team. In a man of the match performance and the winning grand final, 2nd X1 skipper Nicholas Demelis took 9 wickets for the match including 6\42 off 28 overs with 15 maidens in the first innings. The best figures for the season however were taken by Saicharan Pemmaraju who in the last game of the season won the almost unwinnable game for the 5th X1 taking career best figures of 7\10 to bowl out the Reds for 32 in response the 5th X1’s total of 66. The Reds must be Sai’s bunnies as it was his 2nd 5 wicket haul in 4 weeks against them having taken 5\28 in round 17. There are so many more stories to come out of 2018-19, so read on to refresh your memory. – Barney YOULDEN RISING STAR – Alex Avraam The Justin J. O’Connor Memorial Trophy This is a trophy to uphold youthful exuberance and talent, and at the same time pay our respects to an old friend who was taken from us so young. Alex Avraam this season became the second graduate of the junior program to take out this award in his first full season in the senior ranks. After playing seniors whilst still a junior for the last 3 years this season Alex stepped his game up again and played half a dozen games in the First X1 towards the end of the season before being the rock the A Reserve premiership team batting for over 200 overs in the finals, top scoring in 3 of those 4 innings, including his highest senior score of 86 in the first innings of the semi final. Along with being at every social event Alex was a regular at Ryder on Sundays to support the guys playing there, along with also being a coach of one of the junior teams. Alex continues the fine calibre of young player to win this award. We hope Alex has a long a successful playing career at YPCC is ahead of him. BEST CLUBPERSON – Ciara Boyle The Tom Harrington Memorial Trophy The Best Clubperson award is perhaps the most important award given by the club. Ciara Boyle is an outstanding club person, and joins a growing list of women who have won the coveted Best Clubperson Award. Ciara has a been junior team manager, is the clubs first female club secretary and deeply involved in setting up our growing junior girls program. She's often the first to arrive and last to leave at junior training. She mentors other parents into the many jobs that need to get done around YPCC. Ciara brings a high quality of organisation and strategic thinking into her role as club secretary - qualities critical to the successful of our club. SENIOR CLUB CHAMPION – 566 POINTS The George Moloney Jnr. In what was a very big year for Nick he racked up 350 runs, took 34 wickets (including 15 in the finals which didn’t count to this award), took 8 catches and affected a run out. Nick finished the season by captaining the 2nd X1 to a premiership, being named man of the match in the grand final where he changed the course of the match by taking 6-42 (including the first 5 wickets) in the first innings.
