FOREWORD

Welcome to the Cockburn Cricket Club wind up and presentation of the 2008/2009 yearbook. This publication is set to celebrate the highs and the lows of a year that saw new players walk through the door of the Club, old timers back for another season, and the 3rd grade side win the premiership!

This Yearbook provides you with a comprehensive look into player statistics, milestones and most importantly club achievements. It also contains reports from all Captains, the Coach and the Committee on this season‟s events, and there may be a „touch‟ of humour along the way (thanks Evo!).

The Yearbook is produced in a matter of days and it‟s the tireless work of several people. This Year special recognition must go to the co-ordinators Frank Legena, Arron Savage, and Brad Dumbrell. Special mention must go to Steven Camarda, Clinton Mitchell, Anthony Every, David Lambasa and Cesare Cecchi for providing their time towards the production of this Yearbook.

Finally, I hope you enjoy this book and treat it with the respect it deserves. This Yearbook is a precious memory of the 2008/2009 season, so enjoy the read and we look forward to seeing you back at the club next year!

Enjoy the night!

PRESIDENT`S REPORT

As the 2008/2009 season draws to a close, I reflect on a season where things didn‟t go as well on the field as it did off. In saying that, by the time this yearbook goes to press we as a club might have 3 premierships for the season (1 one day and 2 two days), which turns out to be a good season. In saying that, off the field the credit has to go to a good working committee that any president would be pleased to have.

Frank Legena And Joe Covic made my job easy, thanks guys! Then there was Gabe Puca who took on the sponsorship job and what a great job raising he did raising over $20,000, in addition to organising the bar area to be upgraded. I know how shy you are Gabe to be made a fuss about but personally I thank you very much for a job well done. It showed how everybody on the committee felt the same way by making you BEST CLUBMAN. Arron Savage took over the social responsibilities this season helped by Brad Dumbrell and Paul Ricci. They set a high standard for coming seasons, well done and hope you all step up again next year. B.J took on the Registrar‟s job and he made sure everyone was legal to play, well done BJ and hope all goes well for your job at the club next season as Treasurer. Thanks to the rest of the committee for there help throughout the season - a JOB WELL DONE GUYS!

With work and family commitments, Fedele Camarda was unable to continue on as coach - so the 2 Matt‟s (Ferraro and Watson) put up their hand. Their contribution as coaches was of a high standard and a great personal learning experience, which stands them in good stead for coming seasons if they pursue coaching again.

Steve Warchomij took on the hardest job at the club, Chairman of Selectors, and I can say from past experiences those knives hurt, but a job well done Steve.

Rhino who continued to excel with his own unique brand of customer service, well- done mate for another great year, once again ran the bar!

Monica was once again a hard worker in the kitchen and bar with help from Sue and Kaye, so thank you to the girls for your hard work.

In closing I must acknowledge the incoming committee led by Joe Covic, and wish them all the best for next season and beyond.

Regards

David Kay President

COACHES REPORTS

I‟d like to thank Dave Kay and the committee for selecting me as Club Coach for this season. It has been an honour and a privilege to coach such a great club that I hold close to my heart. To be given the chance to coach at a senior level with Matt Watson was a very exciting challenge and made more difficult following in the footsteps of the great Fedele Carmada.

It was a roller coaster season with a lot of players committing to me pre-season, the committee backing me and entering six sides for the season. However, a lot of promises were broken and soon we had to drop our sixth side. The season was off to a terrible start and had Chook and myself pulling our hair out with the amount of players not turning up for training and not playing in the early season due to various reasons –„Good and Bad‟!!

The first three or four rounds saw all teams struggling to win games and I was starting to feel it was going to be a long season. However, the roller coaster continued and as we got close to Christmas players started to train and return to the club.

The results in all the grades started to improve with the 2nd and 3rd grade making one day finals with the 3rd‟s winning! First flag for the season! With one flag under our belt, we continued to improve. It was great to see three grades make finals and the 2nd and 3rd grades making the grand final, with Chooky‟s 3rd grade side going through undefeated and winning the 2 day flag after losing the first three games of the year.

I think this season will be looked upon in the future as the first step of Cockburn becoming the most powerful club in SMCA. We had big improvements in the young blokes like B. Robins, Shae, Holmesy, Gruba, Merridith and all the new young players to the Club like Turnbull, De Jesus, Duffy and O‟Sullivan. With the help of a few more new blokes next year and the continued development of the young blokes this club has a very bright future.

I would like to thank Steve Warchomij for the great job he did as selector. It‟s a thankless task and he did a very fair and professional job, with the clubs interests always put first.

Would also like to thank all the captains Evo & A Black (1st), Sav & G Black (2nds), Chook & Fedele (3rds) B Jones (4ths) and G Puca (1da) for all their help and support throughout the year! A special mention must go to Chook, Gabe and Wade Westphal-Groves (u17s coach) for the way they blended the u17s boys into training and giving them very valuable senior games. This will hopefully reap rewards in the future.

Murray Robins deserves a big thank you for his specialist coaching tips throughout the year. His mere presence was appreciated and I‟m sure all the players learnt something new of Murray this season. His coaching and professionalism is first class and hopefully we can keep him involved with the club in the future.

I‟d also like to thank Gareth Black for taking 90% of the fielding drills this year. Chook and I were under the pump with work and training this season and Gareth

10 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2008/2009 Inc. was a great help. His hard nosed approach to fielding training was fantastic which I‟m sure improved everyone‟s game.

Finally, I would like to thank every player that pulled on the baggy blue this year and hope to see everyone back, bigger and better next year.

Matt Ferraro Co-Coach

It was always going to be a challenge taking on the coaching role this season following in the steps of Fedele Camarda, I thank the committee for giving me the opportunity to take on this role it certainly was an honour.

It certainly turned out to be a real challenge especially early in the season with having to forfeit games and eventually withdraw the 6th side from the competition. The club went through a tough period but to our credit we saw through the hard times and bad losses to turn things around and bring back several wins in all the grades. To all the guys that put in and stuck it out early in the season, you are what the spirit of Cockburn Cricket Club is about and it was great to see the development of those players.

A great success story at the club this year was the development and promotion of Brendan Robins to the 1st grade. Brendan showed great temperament and maturity for a guys that only been playing club cricket for four years.

Clinton Mitchell‟s return to the club after illness was nothing short of inspirational. The dedication, sportsmanship and professionalism that Mitchy has is just outstanding.

I would like to pay tribute and thanks to the guys that put in all season, helped out and could always be counted on to be at training – Gabe Puca, Nick Radevski, Eric Schmidt, Paul Ricci and also to Gareth Black who stepped up and did a great job at fielding practice. Also to Steve Warchomij, a top job as selector and to all the captains well done for your efforts this season.

Special mention must go to Murray Robins! We were very fortunate to have Murray provide specialist coaching sessions during the season and it has paid off!

Thanks to Matt Ferraro my co-coach, Matt has performed sensationally and without him and the support and dedication he has shown, we would have been in some serious trouble this year – thanks Matty I really enjoyed working with you.

Once again I thank Dave Kay and the committee for the privilege and great honour to have the opportunity to coach our club, it was a great challenge and learning experience, I loved every moment.

Good luck to all for next season.

Matt Watson Co-Coach

1ST GRADE REPORT

The 2008 / 09 season for A Grade was a reasonable season as far as our playing performance was concerned. We had a younger side than what we have fielded in recent times, giving valuable exposure to players in the top grade for the first time. This will hopefully hold them in good stead in future years. We had 4 victories and finished in 8th Spot (out of 12 teams) and demonstrated that finals are a real possibility in the next couple of years with the recruitment of a couple of players and the development of existing players.

There were several players who had good seasons and their performances are worth highlighting. Richard Holmes performed very well when fit and was the back bone of our bowling attack, he took 32 at an average of 15.97 which put him in the top echelon of bowlers in the competition. Richard also won our MVP award. Anthony Black performed strongly with the bat, notably in the first part of the season when he captained the side for the first 3 games and demonstrated that he has leadership qualities. Anthony scored 443 runs at an average of 44.30 which placed him in the top 5 batting aggregates in the competition. Andrew Oreb made some significant contributions throughout the year, he scored 3 Fifties in games that we won and was very influential in these victories. Andrew was serviceable with his bowling efforts throughout the year and is a very valuable member of the A Grade side.

I think there were encouraging performances from some of the young members of our side, Brendon Robins, Liam Duffy and Shae Smith. All these 3 players had some good games throughout the season and if they continue to work hard on their games I believe they can be good solid A Grade players for our club. Troy DeJesus was by far our best trainer throughout the year, seldom missing a training session and more importantly the quality of his training was excellent, working hard on the technical aspects of his game. Troy has a big future with our club and I hope he continues with his excellent attitude, as I‟m sure successful performances on the field are not to far away.

A big thanks goes to Pippo Raffaele who I asked at the beginning of the year to fill a vacant spinners position. Pippo had a good season and proved he is still a quality A Grade player both with bat, ball and in the field. It is likely to be the end of Pip‟s A Grade career so well done Pip on a great career in which he played in 2 A Grade Premierships including our first in 1989/90.

I‟d like to thank Matt Ferraro and Matt Watson for coaching the club this year. I think they‟ve done a great job and it is a wonderful effort to get 2 out of the 5 sides into a Grand Final (unsure on the GF results at time of writing). Also, thanks to Murray Robins for his specialist training sessions. Thanks to Steve Warchomij who made the job of selecting the A Grade side very easy and I think all selections were done by the Tuesday before each game, which was fantastic.

Thank you to all who played in A Grade this year, I hope you had an enjoyable year and the majority of you come back next year. I believe we have a core group of young players who are capable of success if they are prepared to work more diligently on their games. I think every player needs to make it to training twice a week and when training make them quality sessions, with the focus on getting their

14 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2008/2009 Inc. basic bowling and batting techniques correct (not forgetting fielding of course). It‟s now up to you and what you want to make of your cricket careers!

Finally thanks to the committee for giving me the opportunity to Captain the A Grade side this season.

Inaugural Cockburn Cup The race that stopped the suburb!

Race 1

Hungry Jacks Plate WEIGHT FOR AGE

1. The Big Easy: Often seen in the drive through at numerous fast food chains. He can deceive you with his flight & variation. Might be carrying too much weight in this though. 2. The Pres: May try and bully his way through this but being out in the paddock for a long spell this may be beyond him. 3. Tex‟s Baps: A mountain of a man, his bowed legs may see him get stuck half down the track. Unlikely. 4. Sledgehammer: Has produced some stunning sponsorship deals but may need a run or two to produce his best. 5. Dozer‟s Delight: An afternoon tea specialist, the evening timeslot may be too late for this club larrikin. 6. No More Hanky Panky: Recently hitched, this high class performer has switched to selecting rather than playing so far this campaign. Lack of racing may not help him here.

Race 2

Workforce Stakes

1. Bingaling: A step up in class this week will make it tougher for the man known as the walking wall. Looking to keep the lead with the fantasy point, but is it all just smoke? 2. Shake ‟n‟ Bake: Renowned for his top “3” finishes in both bowling & duck awards. Will need to perform at his best to keep the dream alive. If you aint first you‟re last! 3. Sazzle Dazzle: Turns angry on the Jacks but with his brisk bowling and reliable lower order batting should be competitive in this. 4. Club Dummy: The quiet achiever, has just moved up in class with a couple of outstanding performances. However can get sidetracked easily and may need a filly to get his mind back on the job. 5. The Mask: Well presented and manicured but could let the event get to him causing another below par performance. 6. Not as Good as Rob: Hit a century in his first game ever but now with his brother performing strongly his average is declining. To his credit he has stepped up in class this season.

Race 3

Collett Handicap

1. Sourav: This left handed A grade opener hits the ball straight and when on his game is almost unbeatable. Has been slightly out of shape this may hurt his chances in this. 2. The DR: Lightly raced type and very often goes missing. Could be a surprise packet. 3. Kaleeya Kid: Started his Cockburn career with a bang after a big night at Club Dummy. Has since proven his worth and is ready to step up into higher class. 4. Turncoat Adams: Promised the world but has declined to race so far. Even brought new stable colours. Could this be his race? 5. Stevie Wonder: Might want to get his head out of the clouds and on the track if he does might be hard to beat. 6. Flying Dutchman: Might come a cross as a bit of a toker, but this guy has the firepower to deliver.

Race 4

SDS Slipper 1. Duffman: OH YEAH!! 2. Johnny Trousersnake: Often away, he is fantastic when around. Known to get fired up in his younger days, he can‟t let his competitors get to him. Good chance. 3. Success Express: Welcomed back into the fold and has performed admirably. A recent back injury may derail his run though. 4. Purple Bullshit: A premiership winning effort last season. Anew born has forced an early retirement so expect a big finish as long as no Vodka has been consumed. 5. The Doohan Dasher: Quick, loud and entertaining are just a few words to describe. He will try to outfox his rivals. 6. Baby Bonus: Some say the only reason he was able to get financial and play this season was the baby bonus. Slow down the wicket and quick to drop his bundle. Not fancied here.

19 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2008/2009 Inc.

Race 5

JEYCO Derby

1. Ruperts Rat: Very promising young colt. Should be racing in a higher class. Should be thereabouts at the finish. 2. SuperJesus: Sent over from „Rio‟ for this race. Shows lots of promise but a step up in class might find him out. 3. The Broken Dog: A fierce competitor and major wicket taker last year he was sure to be popular. Unfortunately a knee injury may have ended his race prematurely. 4. SOM: The son of Murray he‟s young and enthusiastic. Has jumped to Group 1 company this year and sure to have admirers in this. 5. Boy George: The pretty boy opening A grade bowler took plenty of poles last season but has he got the stamina to outclass this field? 6. S.S. Schmidt: With deceptive pace and stealth this old timer will keep chipping away. Don‟t Discount here.

Race 6

Seaview Cockburn Cup

1. Captain Snooze: Stand in captain of the top grade, often comes to play after just waking up and is quite often seen snoozing at tea. Will he be awake tonight? 2. The Fowl Fireman: Known for his uplifting speeches and class performance. This co-coach will have to do more than talk to win this one. 3. Headpuller: This co-coach is a proven A grade performer. His big heart and fancy glove work might get him over the line however, with the only female in his race he may be distracted. 4. Minnie Mouse: From impeccable blood lines (Father & brother played for Australia) and herself a National Basketballer. As the only filly on the card, sure to attract plenty of attention. 5. Spearmint Rhino: The club barman and VP is always ready to race. Emergency for all home games and will delivery if given the opportunity. 6. Every Bit a Virgin: Currently touring Europe this evergreen veteran plays it straight but this field containing the only female he won‟t last the distance.

And….the winners are?

2ND GRADE REPORT (SMCA 3rd)

Our season can be defined as a rollercoaster, bringing with it many highs and lows culminating with a riveting semi-final win over our arch rivals Leeming propelling us into our second Grand Final in as many years and giving us the chance to win back to back flags.

We had our work cut out for us early as we had lost some key players from last year‟s team with injuries, retirements and family commitments all playing a part. This made selecting a side very difficult at times but also gave other players an opportunity to stake their claim for a permanent spot.

Before Christmas we hadn‟t won a two day game which was disappointing but we had won 4 out of 5 one day games keeping us in touch with the top 4 on the overall ladder. We won the next two one day games in the New Year and finished on top of the table giving us the right to host the final against Leeming. We bowled well and restricted Leeming to a gettable total but the loss of early wickets had us on the back foot from which we didn't recover.

Coming up to the business end of the season we were still winless in the two day competition, which wasn‟t a true reflection on how the team was travelling. We lost games against Riverton and Kwinana that we'd pencilled in as winnable games but terrible fielding cost us any chance of victory and our finals chances looked all but gone. A good win against an under strength SJ Blues boosted our confidence for the final game of the year with a mathematical chance to finish 4th we required an outright win against Kelmscott and had to rely on Kwinana and Kardinya to lose. With a fantastic bowling performance from everyone we managed to roll Kelmscott cheaply on the first day and we were confident we get a lead and try and bowl them out again. With Brad Dumbrell hitting his maiden century for the club in quick time with able support from Mike Monastra and Phil Grubelich we managed to geta lead of 87. We came out and rolled Kelmscott for 72 with all bowlers firing once again and giving us our first outright for the year. We later found out that both the teams we needed to lose did and we were in the 4!

Our arch rivals Leeming were our opponents in the first semi at their home ground Trevor Gribble. Cockburn had been written off by a lot of people for this game as Leeming finished on top easily. We knew within the team that if we got early wickets and put the pressure on their batsman we would win the game, everything we talked about happened for us on day 1 knocking them over for 89. We made hard work with the chase after being 0/27 at the end of the first day I think we relaxed a bit to much and struggled in the early part of the chase on day two losing a quick succession of wickets leaving us 7/73, but the staunch efforts of Joe Covic, Paul Ricci and Michael Hitchcock saw us over the line with two wickets in hand. Joe and Paul in particular batted a lot of overs showing true Cockburn spirit.

In the Grand Final against Riverton we won the toss and batted hoping to apply pressure with runs on the board, but again we fell away early losing 5/31. Joe Covic and Phil Grubelich put on a much needed partnership of 59 helping us to post a total of 124. A modest total at best we knew we were on the back foot yet again this year, our bowlers tried there best but it wasn't to be.

21 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2008/2009 Inc.

We had a number of contributors throughout the year Paul Ricci could be counted on every week to tie an end down for the team taking 22 wickets for not many runs putting pressure on the batsman and allowing others to cash in at the other end. Zamien Sumich could be counted on to break a partnership taking 19 wickets and Michael Hitckcock came into the side later in the year and took 19 wickets, including the crucial ones of Gibbs and Mcguire in the semi.

Daniel Meredith & Brad Dumbrell having great years with the bat hitting 291 and 325 runs respectively. Dave Turnball was a newcomer to the club this year and fit in nicely within our team averaging over 20 with the bat and at times playing a lone hand in our middle order holding the middle order together.

3RD GRADE REPORT (SMCA 4th)

I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to again captain the 3rd grade this year, after the disappointment of the disqualification in the GF last season, I believed it was appropriate to go one more year to seek some closure and to hopefully take out what we truly deserved. I would like to thank Dave Kay, Rhino and the committee for showing the faith and giving me the opportunity to chase redemption.

The season didn‟t quite start the way I wanted it to, or expected it to go, with losses in the first three games and then a draw in the four due to weather; however it was also a reflection on where we were also as a club at the time. Ironically our season turned around when I became unavailable for three consecutive games and the team was brilliantly captain by the inspirational Fedele Camarda who put us back on track with three wins in a row. At the time I was lucky to get back into the side! There had now been a bit of a change in the feel of the side and they boys were confident and on a roll – we didn‟t look back stringing the next 12 consecutive games in a row with good solid wins.

There were many positives and a highlight during the season, of particular mention was winning the one-day Grand Final against Phoenix at Enright, the boys worked strongly as a team from ball one, we bowled and fielded very well and followed up with a fine display of batting.

Also pleasing was our ability to still get up and win games when things were not looking good early, of particular mention were the two outstanding centuries from Dave Lambasa and centuries also to Fedele Camarda against Thornlie and to James Petit against Maddington in a one-day game. The young guys also performed well and have gained some valuable experience; Ben Devadoss, Tony Radevski and Andrew Murdoch continue to grow in strength and will no doubt be future top grade players for the club with determination and commitment.

The older guys also held their own; we had stand out performances from Glen “The Grim Reaper” Santich and Gary Faria with the ball and the ever reliable Justin Micale making comebacks for the big games and always bowling a treat when it counts.

If the comeback of Clinton Mitchell didn‟t inspire the club this year I don‟t know what else could have. Mitchy got better with each game and it was a true pleasure to see him back on the track, bowl well and just be the true champion that he is in every aspect of the game. Well done Mitchy it was great to have you apart of our side!

A final and most important thank you is warranted to Fedele Camarda. Once again my job was so much easier because of Fedele‟s commitment and enthusiasm for cricket and knowing the pain we went through last season, he was as determined to ensure the Cockburn Cricket Club 3rd grade hit back. He has been a great Vice- Captain and leader of this side and club. Thanks mate!

Well done to all the guys in the 3rd Grade, at great season! I look forward to handing over the 3rd grade mantle and wish the club and the grade every success next season. Matthew Watson Captain

CRICKET IN CROATIA?? WHAT NEXT…

Just like the never ending and unlikely quest to find a thinking fast bowler, who would have thought that this year cricket in Croatia celebrates its bicentennial year? That’s right … cricket was first established back in 1809 by the English naval captain Sir William Hoste whose fleet was based on the idyllic Adriatic island of Vis in Croatia during the Napoleonic wars.

Lammy somehow collects the tournaments leading run scorer in the Euro 20/20 in Wales last year In between the many naval battles against the French, Sir William ordered his troops to Anyway …moving along….. aside from the build the first ever cricket field outside of 200 year celebration, cricket in Croatia has England in Europe. 4TH GRADE REPORT (SMCA 6th)

I am writing this on the morning of the Grand Final for our 2nd and 3rd grade sides, contemplating what might have been, and knowing Cockburn‟s 4th grade deserve to be playing today as well. It was certainly been a season of ups and downs, starting off the season with a completely different line-up every week; it was always going to be hard to consistently win.

In our second game of the season against Maddington (first two dayer) they were 7 down needing a further19 to win, some decent bowling by Jason, saw them needing 1 to tie with 1 wicket in hand, Markus (wicketkeeper) dived to the leg side and threw down the stumps at the other end to give us our first win of the season, awesome work by him and showed that we were never going to be pushovers.

We didn‟t lose a game after Christmas, and that was thanks to having a very stable side (thanks Hank!) and people consistently putting their hands up and doing a great job in the side. Winning 6 games in a row was always going to be a hard effort, but we knew we had to do it and win a game outright to make finals, and we did it, playing our grand final every week after Christmas. Chasing 330 against Leeming was never going to be easy, but Stan showed up, hitting 137 off some very good bowling, with 10 4‟s and 9 6‟s, it was great satisfaction seeing Fontana have 0/66 off his first 6 overs and refusing to bowl until Stan got out. Against Armadale, in the last game of the year, we needed to win well to get into the 4, batting first all of our batsmen contributed, with Stan at the top of the list with 194, off less than 150balls, with 21 4‟s and 11 6‟s, once again all of our bowlers contributing to a good win. In the semi against Phoenix, we faced easily the best bowling of the season from the likes of Lou Natale and Jason Hamling. Being 3/14 in a final is never a good position, but Brad and Steve Camarda fought it out and dug in for over 2 hours which was a huge plus, we knew that batting our full amount of overs would make us a big chance, and very well done to Reels, Steve and Brad for showing some great heart and digging in when your team needed you to. Bowling, we had them 3/44 with 1 over before tea; Ranko got the ball for the last over and bowled their captain with his first ball. Having them 4/48 at tea we knew we were a big chance. Unfortunately Barkell and Sargeant put on a 67 run partnership which left them chasing 33 with 5 wickets in hand. We ended up getting them 7 down, with all of our bowlers bowling extremely well. We did everything we could to win the game.

Notable performers for the 4th grade this season were Stan Koios, 398 runs in 5 innings, top score of 194 and average of 80, 42 4‟s and 21 6‟s; Jason Ilaretti with 23 wickets at 12 and some very good catches; Justin Micale with 167 runs at 55.7 and 17 wickets at 16.4; Brad O‟Sullivan showing great temperament with the bat, digging in when required, and awesome fielding, 2 run outs and 6 catches in only 5 games; and Markus Krajnc with 193 runs, 15 catches 1 stumping and 1 run out.

Thanks for a great season to everyone that played in my side, thanks again to Dave for giving me the opportunity to captain, and thanks to Hank for helping me out with selections.

One Day A Report

This season the One Day “A” side had a very disappointing season, finishing in second last position. We had a few opportunities to upset some of the top sides but were unable to take advantage of the situation.

Unfortunately this was not our year; we struggled for numbers for most of the season, having to play many games with only 9 or 10 players. We even played one game with only 8, as it turned out it was a very hot day and we spent a great deal of time chasing leather all afternoon. But the God‟s must have felt sorry for us as we were awarded the game and point dur to the opposition playing a player without a permit.

In one of the worst game that I have ever had to play was in Round 7 against Armadale, this is another game that we had our chance to win. Our players were completely put of their game by the tactics of the opposition Captain. This made many of our players react very badly and lose concentration. Unfortunately our Wicket Keep on the day, Joe Covic, was reported and suspended to 3 matches.

We were able to have umpires for the other two encounters against Armadale, with the last match of the season bring played in great spirits and sportsmanship between the two sides. This could be due the Captain of Armadale not playing.

Despite not having a very successful season we worked hard throughout the season, I believe we were let down on a number of occasions at the selectors table. We unfortunately never really had a balances side all season, some games we were only able to have one recognised batsman with the rest of the side being made up of lower order all rounder and part time bowlers. But to the credit to all the guys that played they gave their all and I couldn‟t be prouder of all the players.

Highlights for the season were few and far between, Aurelio Mollica making an unbeaten 93 against Murdoch University and young Adam O‟Neil making 60, the pair added a 137 run partnership. In this match Garry Faria chipped in with a fine 49.

Other top scores for the season were Lui Medin with 66, Remo Viti with 52 and Ranko Matic with a fine 50 that held our innings together against Armadale.

Other highlights for the season were the way two of the Clubs under 17‟s played in our grade and their development through the season. Jake Martins and Adam O‟Neil filled and made great contributions through out the season. The club has a great future with the likes of these two young men coming through the ranks. I do hope they continue and further develop their skills. These are the sort of players the club need to spend time with and encourage them to stay at the club at senior level.

To Dave Cleary, I would like to thanks him for his efforts. In many games we could not have a regular wicket keeper selected in our side. Dave accepted the challenge and filled in and did a great job. Dave also was elevated to the opener‟s position as we were struggling for batsman and also did well. Wade Westphal-Groves also continued to improve through the season and was a very good opening batsman for us until he damaged his knee towards the end of the season in round 16.

Ranko Matic was another player that deserves mention; he always gave his all for the team and the club. He would bowl his heart out and in some very hot conditions; his effort with the bat was tremendous especially with the win over Leeming. Ranko was completely exhausted by the end having first bowled his 8 overs on a very hot day and then making a great 41 not out and making the winning run off the last ball of the day. 47 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2008/2009 Inc.

Also to my bother Nick Puca who also had a good season, I could always rely on Nick to open the bowling and bowl well and tight. Between Nick and Ranko their opening bowling efforts would get us off to a good start, unfortunately we could not support or back up their efforts.

Others who should have a good future with the club if they allowed the opportunities are Angus Morell, Anthony Puca and James Clark. James starting playing in Round 17 and has continued to improve with both his batting and bowling, James took a fine 5/33 against Willetton, that was the only 5 wicket haul for the side all season.

I would like to thank the Committee for giving me to opportunity to Captain this side, even though at time it was very frustrating and did fell let down, it was a very rewarding in seeing the development of many of our younger players.

Finally I must thank Eric Schmidt for his efforts this season both on the field and around the club. Eric would always be at training bowling to anyone in the nets, he would be one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave. He was never upset if he missed out on a game and would come down and support the side when not playing. Eric will not be around the club next season as he and his wife are moving to Busselton; I would like to take this opportunity in thanking Eric and hope that he will always remember his times at Cockburn. We will all miss your curried egg sandwiches for afternoon tea. All the best Eric you will be missed around the Club.

Looking forward to being part of the club in 2009/10 season.

Gabe Puca Captain

Cockburn Cricketers Most Embarrassing Moments

DAVID LAMBASA WRITES…

Over the 25 plus year history of the Cockburn Cricket Club there are many that have come and gone … and some who have come but have yet to be gone. Here are but a few that have made an indelible mark on our club and our clubs history…

William “Billy buckets” Grant Former A Grade player and legend of our club back in the 80‟s and early 90‟s. Plied his main trade with a willow in his hand and is reputedly said to be the 2nd best slipper ever at the club. Strictly a nets only bowler he was also brilliant in the field if you ever shifted him out of slips. Now living up in Port Hedland with his family fishing every chance he gets. Likes to send the occasional text message down to Perth reminding all of his slipping skills – hence the nickname „buckets‟

Gary Cukrov Original first year player when Cockburn CC first started up. Former South Fremantle bulldogs league player was able to do anything with both bat and ball. Used to come cricket training with his ute loaded up with vegies from his market garden on the way to the markets after training. Had express pace in his younger years which was replaced by guile and cunning in his later. Played competitive cricket well past his mid 40‟s which gives many still playing the game much hope. Still market gardening with a family now and often reminisces of the old days.

Steven Bubalo Those fortunate enough to have played and socialized with „Bubs‟ will have many a story to recount. Though a Wattleup boy growing up he chased the big money by playing for Cockburn juniors leaving a big hole in the then 9 man Wattleup junior side. Originally came to the club in the mid 80‟s as a batsman but was soon batting at his rightful spot of 11 … albeit in A Grade. Became a brilliant opening bowler for Cockburn in the „A‟s with many still talking about his control, pace and swing. Was a rare breed given his high IQ making him a thinking fast bowler. Bar takings reputedly dropped 30% when he hung his boots up. Teaches PE now in Perth with wife and 3 kids - his 2 youngs boys already show much sporting talent.

Frank Scarvaci

Who will ever forget Franks international and Cockburn CC debut over in England in 2001 on the famous club Ashes tour? Short of men due to certain elements of the tour party being smashed the night before (ably lead by Terra found at 8am in the courtyard still drinking and singing) tour captain Anthony Every put his foot down and suspended 5 players. Frank saw his chance and grabbed it by becoming the 12th man. Given the only time he had ever picked up a bat was when his shop was being broken into this was an admirable and bold move. Borrowing whites 4 sizes too small for him he came on to field when „Hitchtank‟ Hitchcock also succumbed to the night before with an on field chuck. Splitting his pants down the middle Frank almost fielded brilliantly. It was both a memorable debut and testimonial match for Frank. Married with wife Sue and 2 wonderful boys living 100 yards from Davilak still running the IGA supermarket.
