Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 5 EXECUTIVE REPORTS

President’s Report It gives me great pleasure to provide the President's report for season 2014/15. It was a season that was punctuated by good weather for the most part and ran reasonably smoothly.

The competition format remained as per the previous season's quota of matches with a 13 round competition for first and second grade with a mixture of one and two day games. Helensburgh achieved an historic maiden first grade minor premiership but were then bundled out in the Semi Final against eventual premiers Balgownie. Corrimal defeated University in the other Semi Final. The final played between Corrimal and Balgownie was played over two weekends after the second day of the first weekend was completely washed out, and it proved that a reserve weekend was worth re-instating in the calendar after the controversies of a number of unfinished finals over the previous 10 seasons.

Well done to Balgownie for winning another first grade premiership. Balgownie are now one of our smallest clubs and that only makes this achievement all the more meritorious and hopefully the success boosts interest in their club to solidify their future.

In the lower grades Helensburgh continued their successful season by taking out their maiden second grade premiership, whilst Wests and Northern Districts took out the third and fourth grade premierships respectively.

All grades participated in the T20 competition which was sponsored by Albert's Group and thanks in particular to well-known cricket identity Brad Young for that sponsorship. The T20 format was played in pool groups with 5 preliminary matches. The Finals Day at North Dalton Park attracted a good crowd and in the First Grade decider Corrimal comfortably took out the trophy against Helensburgh. The lower grade finals went to Keira, University and Northern Districts.

Helensburgh capped their highly successful season by winning their first Club Championship which was a great achievement for our youngest club and well done in particular to long time player and new club President Tim Lloyd.

On the representative front Illawarra did not enjoy as much success as in previous seasons however there were pleasing signs and some good performances. The senior team had its second year in the prestigious T20 first grade competition and played a double header at home and a double header away. Although defeated in each of its 4 games the team was more than competitive despite missing a number of the team's leading players from the previous season. The team then played in the Country Championships in Griffith and played well to defeat Southern Zone and Riverina before falling to eventual Country Champions Western Zone in the third game.

Congratulation to Illawarra's captain Jonathon Cook who was selected in the NSW Country that played in the Australian Country Championships in Bendigo.

Early in the season the cricket world was rocked by the shock surrounding the death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes and a difficult decision had to be made as to whether to play matches on the weekend following his death. After consulting the Committee and some senior players it was decided that all matches would be played and the reaction of all clubs and players in respecting Phillip's passing was very pleasing and certainly showed that the cricket fraternity is still a closely knitted one.

The Association was delighted to host a T20 trial match involving the Sydney Sixers in mid- December. This game featured a host of internationals including Brett Lee, Doug Bollinger, Moises Henriques, Ed Cowan, England's Michael Lumb and others. Even though the game was played on a week day a good crowd attended North Dalton Park which was in top condition and the 'Illawarra XI' won in a fairy tale 'Super Over'. Balgownie's David Murphy top scored in the match with 43 and Dapto's Dale Scifleet also did a good job opening the bowling for the Illawarra

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 6 XI. Former Dapto player Trent Johnston coached the Illawarra XI. A big thank you to the clubs that helped on the day and members of the Management Committee and Brad Young for their off field work in ensuring the day was very successful. We hope that hard work will lead to regular high profile games at NDP.

In December the cricket community was saddened by the news of the passing of Corrimal Life member and long term Illawarra player Phil Hamer. I had the pleasure of playing against Phil and would describe him as a fierce competitor who had respect for his club, his opponents and the officials, and after the game he had time to talk to players much younger than him, a sad loss.

On a brighter note in January Harold Stapleton turned 100. Harold still resides in the District. He is the oldest living first class cricketer in Australia and certainly one of the finest players to have ever played in our competition.

Off the field the Association this year had a new Administrative Officer in Glenn Bridge and I would like to express my thanks to Glenn for the way he approached his new role. He had very limited time to familiarise himself with our practices and procedures and quickly established good communication with the Management Committee and clubs. Glenn played a major role in the increased publicity the competition received in both traditional and online media. He also oversaw Illawarra's hosting of the SCG Cup play-offs that were played in late December.

I'd like to thank the Management Committee for their work during the season, in particular the work of Kim McConnochie and Neale Benson in overhauling our financial practices. Clubs will have seen the benefit of their work with the streamlined invoicing of ground fees and they also assisted in the Umpires updating their payment system. I'd like to thank Doug Murphy for his role as chairman of the junior Sub-Committee and Mark Waldock for chairing the Representative Committee.

Steve Davies as the Cricket NSW Zone Administrator of Coaching also to be thanked for the work he has done with that role and the work he has done above and beyond what is expected of him.

Disappointingly, a life member of the Association in conjunction with a few parents of junior players that had missed out on representative teams mounted a protracted email campaign about perceived unfairness in the way we conducted our representative teams. Despite making it clear that we would review the representative procedures this campaign continued and the attack on people that have volunteered their time was way over the top.

The District Presentation was held at the Fraternity Club in April and was again superbly hosted by Fox Sports' Matt Russell. There was a very good vibe in the room and some very good speeches made. Congratulations to long standing players and administrators John Pemberton and Neale Benson in receiving their life membership badges for their countless hours of contribution to our sport. Congratulations also to Corrimal's Xavier McDevitt in being named Cricketer of the Year.

Thank you to the Association's other sponsors including; CCNSW, Alberts Group, Johnston Legal, Kookaburra & Blackchrome Sportswear.

For all clubs it is a difficult time to keep players of all ages involved in the sport as well as attracting new players. The Association is acutely aware of that and the need to provide competitions and formats that suit modern lifestyles. That is a massive challenge to overcome and requires all clubs to contribute to. Having 10 clubs participating in the top 3 grades is something we should be very proud of and preserve.

Mark Johnston – President

Executive Summary

It is most pleasing to report that the association recorded a net surplus of $8,259.60 for the year ending 30 April 2015. This is in contrast to the prior year loss of $10,446.01, being an improvement of $18,705.61. This result also compares favourably to the breakeven target set in the initial budget. It should be noted that 2014/15 was the first year that a comprehensive initial budget was adopted by the association. This budget was reviewed monthly by the Finance Committee so that the Management Committee was fully informed of the likely year end result. This provision of improved budgetary information also allowed the Management Committee to make informed financial decisions during the year, with an understanding of the impact any operational decision would have on the financial result at year end.

Financial Analysis

1. Operating Result

The full year surplus of $8,259.60 was achieved even though full year income was $11,712.10 below budget. The association was able to manage its expenditure to the extent of $19,971.70 below budget, thus achieving this net surplus.

The income shortfall to budget was mainly due to:

a) An ambitious sponsorship budget of $24,386.36 was set, with $15,381.82 being achieved, a shortfall of $9,004.54. This total however was $ 5,436.37 in excess of that received in 2013/14 b) A shortfall in “Fundraising Other” of $4,252.59 as no specific additional initiatives were developed. c) Ground hire income was $8,688.36 below budget, mainly due to no specific income being received for representative cricket. This was funded mainly by the CNSW general grant. d) Fines from clubs was $2,590.83 above budget, but more pleasing was the fact this was $2,781.92 below the previous year, indicating that clubs have improved compliance with match reporting requirements. e) Income from the Zone representative program exceeded budget by $6,608.01, being mainly due to increased funding received from CNSW. f) The Sydney Sixers trial match in December yielded $4,424.00 in income. This event was not included in the initial budget set in August 2014 as it was not scheduled at that time. The surplus of $1,060.93 for this event was distributed equally to those clubs that assisted the association in hosting this event.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 9 g) Income from the NSW Academy program was $3,957.71 below budget. This was offset by an equivalent un-favourability in the expenditure budget h) CI received investment income of $1,210.36. This was the first investment of surplus cash since the merger of the ICA and IJCA in August 2009.

Full year expenditure was $19,971.70 below budget, being mainly due to the following:

i. A doubtful debt provision of $2,806.00 was budgeted for in respect to the NSWDCA umpire reimbursement for the 2013/14 season. However post balance date advice from the NSWDCA confirmed that it will now pay the association this amount in early 2015/16. The first instalment of $2,000.00 was received by CI on 27 May. ii. The total senior competition expenditure was $9,729.81 favourable to budget as this budget was partly overstated by about 10%. iii. The Zone representative program was $6,969.78 favourable to budget mainly due to reduced expenditure requirements for clothing, transport and equipment iv. The Sydney Sixers trial match in December incurred unbudgeted expenditure of $4,049.02. This was matched by income, as outlined above. v. The NSW Male Academy was $3,755.61 favourable budget, however this was offset by an un-favourability in income. It should be noted that the association does not manage this budget, and only acts as a ”banker” on behalf of the Academy. The unspent income for this program of $1,112.26 is accounted for in “Income in Advance”, being a liability in the balance sheet, so that the operating surplus of the association is not overstated by this amount.

The graph below depicts the monthly trend in income and expenditure. Comparative figures for 2013/14 are not available. However for 2015/16 comparisons can be made to 2014/15 that will help in forecasting both line items, and thus assisting in cash management.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 10 2. Balance Sheet

a) During 2014/15 the cash balance was reduced by $22,518.18 in order to clear the net debt at 30 April 2014 for GST and creditors, offset by cash received from debtors, except the $2,806.00 from the NSWDCA.

b) Sundry debtors, as listed in note 15, has reduced from $19,159.19 to $3,766.48 due to timely invoicing by the association that allowed clubs to be able to plan their cash flow and commitments with greater certainty. The association also provided more timely tax invoice to CNSW to enable funding to be provided on a timely basis. The association received $2,193.18 of this outstanding amount in May.

c) Sundry Creditors listed in note 16 has reduced from $28,241.78 to $581.44 due to the association paying creditors no later than the due date wherever possible.

d) The net GST owed to the ATO has reduced from $10,629.59 at 30 April 2014 to $263.72 owed to the ATO at balance date. This amount due to the ATO is for April 2015 only, and will be settled in July with the ATO as part of the June quarter Business Activity Statement.

e) The balance sheet liability “Income in Advance” is to recognise cash received by the association for specific expenditure not incurred at balance date. These amounts will be transferred to income in future years to match future expenditure, thus eliminating the overstatement of the operating surplus in 2014/15 and the adverse effect on the operating result in future years.

The graph below shows the monthly trend in cash at bank when compared to last financial year.

The “working capital”, being the net cash position of the association, as shown in the balance sheet, increased by $8,699.10. This reconciles to the reported surplus of $8,259.60 which increases to this amount after eliminating the non- cash expense for depreciation on the Administration Officer’s laptop of $439.50.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 21 Administrative Officer’s Report I would like to thank the CI Management Committee for employing me from October 1 2014, to take over the role that Glyn Stanham successfully filled for the previous 7 seasons. Additionally taking on Zone Administrators role at same time created many early challenges and thanks go to Bruce Whitehouse for his continued assistance.

A significant challenge of anyone in Sports administration is to earn the respect of your peers, so I must thank each and every club and its members for their valued support from Day 1.

Publicity

Prospering Cricket Illawarra to media outlets and putting Cricket Illawarra on the Social Media map were the challenges that I saw as a priority, to raise the profile of cricket and everyone involved, whilst increasing the potential to attract sponsors in future.

Weekly Newsletter was sent out on weekly basis to all registered members. Many thanks go to Michael Doig and John Pemberton for their contribution in preparing information. Also thanks to go Mark Johnston (President) and CI Umpires association for weekly news contribution.

Media relationships were strong with 1st grade results appearing in Sunday Telegraph each Sunday and CI forming a strong alliance with media outlets.

Twitter commenced in October 2014 and some 3072 tweets later, Cricket Illawarra has 224 followers.

Facebook commenced in January 2015, and Cricket Illawarra has 213 likes.

Season 2015/16 promises to be a hit with CI Social Media.

A New Social Media policy will commence with the new season

Bar TV streamed T20 1st & 2nd Grade Finals into pubs & clubs in a first for Cricket Illawarra.

Obituaries

The Cricket world was disrupted in November with the sudden passing of Phillip Hughes, and the Cricket Illawarra community paid its respects in many ways which were portrayed on Twitter with many contributing dozens of photos in “put out your bats” campaign as well as ground tributes.

Locally the cricket community mourned,

Phil Hamer – Corrimal Cricket Club

Ian Shephard – Corrimal Cricket Club

SCG Country Cup Carnival

In December, 8 of the best teams in NSW Country descended on Wollongong for the SCG Cup Quarter & Semi Finals, where games were hosted at North Dalton Park, Figtree Oval, Keira Village & King George IV. Games were of high calibre and all teams expressed satisfaction with venues, and Cricket Illawarra as competition host. Eventual winners Merewether played out a thrilling Semi Final against Dubbo at Figtree Oval which tested the nerves of all in attendance and epitomised the standard of Country competition.

Judiciary

CI Judiciary panel convened on 2 occasions during the season.

2 players were found guilty from hearings, 1 player was exonerated on a technicality.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 22 2 players pled guilty choosing not to appear before judiciary.

Season 2015/16 will see an upgrade to Judiciary after current by-laws are overhauled.

Presentation

Cricket Illawarra Annual Presentation was held at Fraternity Club on 17th April, 2015. 107 attended a great evening with expanded Power Point Presentation with major assistance from Finance Committee members, Neale Benson and Kim McConnochie. Award winners are listed in Senior Competition section.

Life Membership

Neale Benson and John Pemberton were awarded Life Membership Badges at Cricket Illawarra Presentation, a fitting tribute to their services to cricket in the Illawarra.

Looking forward, I look forward to growing further Cricket Illawarra’s exposure and learning from last season’s highs and lows to improve Cricket Illawarra from a neutral perspective.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 23 DELEGATE REPORTS

Country Cricket NSW The Country Cricket Association again had a successful year. In what was the busiest summer of cricket in history, the Association was able to successfully complete all of its programmes. This was only made possible by the dedicated work of Cricket New South Wales staff and the enormous commitment of hundreds of volunteers around the state.

Illawarra is one of the stronger zones in New South Wales and is also one of the most respected. Our teams in country competitions generally performed well with a number of our players representing at higher levels, in particular Jono Cook who was selected in the New South Wales Country team to compete at the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Championships at Bendigo.

Perhaps the biggest change in season 2014-15 was the implantation of the Memorandum of Understanding between Cricket NSW and Cricket ACT. This allowed for an ACT-NSW Country team to compete at the Australian Under-17 and Under-19 Championships. The Under-17 team finished second and the Under-19 team finished third. This was considered an excellent result as this was only the first season of the arrangement and it is expected to improve with a bit of fine tuning over the next couple of seasons.

Also for the first time an under 13 and under 14 State Challenge was introduced. These matches took place in Dubbo in January and were a resounding success. Such State Challenges are vital to players being recognized as prospects to advance through the various talent pathways provided by Cricket NSW. These programmes also acknowledge the value that Cricket NSW places on identifying talent in rural and regional New South Wales.

It is important to re-assure all in the bush that despite the withdrawal of sponsorship of the SCG Cup by the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust the competition will definitely go ahead in 2015-16. Cricket NSW is committed to this competition as well as the Brian Gainsford Shield and the Country Plate.

Cricket NSW is also committed to the upgrading of facilities around the state and the Grants Sub Committee has approved more than $75,000 in grants throughout country New South Wales. I urge all clubs within the Illawarra to seriously look at their facilities and make an application for a grant to update and improve their facilities.

Of course the success of the Association would be impossible without the contribution of sponsors. Cricket New South Wales provides the bulk of the money needed to operate such a large programme as that conducted by the NSW Country Cricket Association. Zone Administrators, Academy Coaches, Zone Grants, Regional coaches and Regional Cricket Managers are all funded by Cricket NSW. Other sponsors including the SCG Trust, McDonalds, Kookaburra, the Big Brother Movement and CUB all add to the funds that support the Association and its programmes.

This season saw the first NSW Board meetings held in Country New South Wales. The first in Wollongong, and a second in Wagga Wagga. Two Sheffield Shield games were held in Country New South Wales in Wagga Wagga and Newcastle. Both these events indicate the importance that Cricket NSW places on the role of Country Cricket in developing future First Class and Test cricketers.

The Association is indeed fortunate to have Bruce Whitehouse as its Programmes Manager. Bruce suffered illness for more than half of the season but still made sure, with the assistance of a few helpers, that all programmes were completed successfully. This was a massive effort and all in Country Cricket should be thankful to Bruce.

Finally, I repeat that it is a privilege to represent the Illawarra Cricket Association on the Committee of Management. This is not a position that I take for granted and I am appreciative of the support that Cricket Illawarra gives me.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 24 Zone Umpires Introduction: The first umpires association was formed in the Illawarra in 1929. In due course, the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association affiliated with the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association and, in recent years, the two Associations have developed a close relationship. In particular, Illawarra umpires have benefited from and valued numerous training and development opportunities offered by the NSWCUSA while the regular attendance of NSWCUSA representatives at Annual General Meetings has been greatly appreciated. The Illawarra CUA looks forward to maintaining this close relationship with the NSWCUSA for many seasons to come.

Affiliated umpire associations within the Zone: The Illawarra Zone is a single cricket association, located almost exclusively in the City of Wollongong. The Cricket Illawarra competition consists of 4 Grades and is played between 10 clubs most of which are in close proximity to each other. The one exception is the Helensburgh club, located 35 kilometres to the north of Wollongong. Being such a small Zone, Illawarra has only one affiliated umpire association, namely the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association Inc.

Finals appointments: The Illawarra Twenty20 Competition was again played as part of the weekly competition in the period just before and after Christmas. The Finals matches in all Grades were played at North Dalton Park and its surrounding precinct with the officiating umpires being:

 1st Grade: Corrimal v. Helensburgh – Neil Findlay and Frank Ciocci  2nd Grade: Keira v. Northern Districts – Peter Ferguson and Steve Saye  3rd Grade: University v. Wests-Illawarra – Brian Druery and Evan Lane  4th Grade: Corrimal Red v. Northern Districts – Chris Adams and Denis Veronese

The season culminated with the Two Day Finals in 1st and 2nd Grade and the limited overs One Day Finals in 3rd and 4th Grade. The umpires appointed for these Finals were:

 1st Grade: Balgownie v. Corrimal – David Cullen and Neil Findlay  2nd Grade: Helensburgh v. Northern Districts – David Dobinson and Darren Sutherland  3rd Grade: Corrimal v. Wests-Illawarra – Peter Ferguson and Ean Martin  4th Grade: Corrimal Red v. Northern Districts – John Cauduro and Denis Veronese

Unfortunately, because the local junior Finals clashed with the senior Semi-Finals this season, it was only possible to appoint an umpire to one Final. Wal Smith officiated in the Dapto v. Keira Under 16 Final.

Umpire numbers: The Illawarra CUA has a total of 24 members. Unfortunately, however, 2014/2015 saw a decline in the number of active members and by the end of the season there were only 19 members available to officiate. For the first time in several years, no new umpires joined the Association while the services of a number were lost. Ernie Tinka returned to Dubbo before the season began, Alan Bell retired at the end of November and long serving Wal Smith was unable to umpire after Christmas. Further, several others were often unavailable because of work commitments. Although umpires were still appointed to all matches in 1st and 2nd Grade each round, fewer numbers meant that it was no longer possible to cover many 3rd Grade fixtures. On a brighter note, a number have expressed interest in undertaking umpire training during the off-season and hopefully this will result an increase in on-field umpires next season.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 25 Executive and office bearers: Once again the Executive of the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association has consisted of:  President – Morgan Prosser.  Secretary-Treasurer – Barry Moir.

As usual, Morgan has been tireless in his leadership of the Association and his whole-hearted efforts have been greatly appreciated. Apart from diligently performing his duties, Barry has worked successfully implemented an online system for paying umpire match fees. This has been a revolutionary development in Illawarra where the custom has been that umpires be paid by the clubs on match day. Barry is to be commended for his efforts and for making this new approach function so smoothly.

Other key office bearers have been Neil Findlay (Training Officer) and David Cullen and Peter Ferguson (Training Committee) who have together been responsible for offering training and development activities during the Association’s monthly meetings.

Education and development: Over a weekend in June, 4 members attended a training course on the Laws of Cricket held at Albion Park for Southern Zone umpires. Darryl Hampson also attempted the examination at the end of the course and subsequently, with an outstanding 100% result, became a NSWCUSA member.

The annual pre-season workshop was held in August with 15 participants from Illawarra and Southern Zone in attendance. The workshop was facilitated by Darren Goodger and Muhammad Qureshi and began as usual with a short quiz on the Laws of Cricket. Informative sessions then followed on concentration, match management and a video analysis of decision making in international matches.

An open book examination on the Laws of Cricket was also held before the season commenced. The purpose of this examination was to facilitate revision of the Laws and no “pass” mark was required. However, it was compulsory to attempt the examination before being able to umpire in Illawarra in 2014/2015.

Throughout the season, training continued in the form of quizzes emailed out to members before each monthly Association meeting. The questions provoked spirited discussion at meetings and significantly improved the members’ understanding of both the Laws of Cricket and local Playing Conditions. During the meetings, training sessions were also conducted on dealing with conflict, communication, positioning and fitness for play (Laws 3.8 and 3.9).

Key highlights: The annual Twenty20 trial matches between the Illawarra representative team and Sydney Grade clubs, Bankstown and Sutherland, were again played under lights at North Dalton Park in October. David Dobinson and Peter Ferguson umpired the Illawarra v. Bankstown match while the umpires for the Illawarra v. Sutherland match were David Cullen and Neil Findlay. Subsequently, the Illawarra team participated in the Sydney Grade T20 competition playing against Eastern Suburbs and Randwick-Petersham at North Dalton Park and then Gordon and Sydney at Chatswood Oval. David Cullen and Neil Findlay were both appointed to umpire matches at each of these venues.

At NSW Country level, Neil Findlay was again appointed to the Country Umpires Representative Panel. He stood in the Country U17 Carnival held in Raymond Terrace before travelling to Griffith for the Southern Country Carnival; officiated in the Bradman Cup Carnival in Maitland and finally umpired the rain delayed Country Championship Final in Orange. David Cullen was appointed to the Country Supplementary Panel for the first time and he umpired a ¼ Final of the SCG Country Cup in Wollongong; officiated in the Bradman Cup Carnival in Maitland and umpired the under 14 State Challenge match at the Bradman Oval in Bowral. Along with several other members of the Country Panels, Neil and David also accepted an invitation to umpire in the Sydney 1st Grade Competition. It is further pleasing to note that Darren Sutherland was again afforded the opportunity of umpiring at Country level. He stood in the Country U17 Carnival held in Raymond Terrace and umpired in the Under 13 / Under 14 State

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 26 Challenge Carnival in Dubbo. In addition, Darren was appointed to umpire in Cricket Australia’s pre-season Women’s T20 Series and officiated in a match between South Australia and Tasmania.

During October and November, several umpires once again stood in NSW Junior DCA Inter-Association Shield Competitions. The appointed officials for the Illawarra teams involved were – Brian Druery (Under 12), Ray Trindall (Under 13), Chris Adams (Under 14), Barry Moir (under 15) and Charles Brockley (Under 16). Most of them subsequently officiated in the Semi-Finals of their respective competitions.

The umpire exchange programme initiated last season between the Illawarra CUA and New Zealand’s Central Districts CUSA continued, with Dave Patterson travelling from New Zealand to umpire in Wollongong in November. David Dobinson then flew to New Zealand in January to officiate in a two-day match between Hawkes Bay and Horowhehua-Kapiti in Napier. This match was the equivalent of a NSW Country representative fixture and was played over 110 overs per day. The exchange is now well established and umpires from both Associations have already indicated their desire to participate in future years.

Once again, the Illawarra CUA supported the annual Charity Day organised by the Dapto and Helensburgh clubs in December. Umpires donated their day’s match fees and contributed a total of $850.00 to the fundraising efforts for the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Finally, Neil Findlay won the 2014/2015 “Wal Smith” Umpire of the Year Award. All umpires who officiated in two thirds of the matches played during the season were eligible for the award and its criteria were marks awarded by captains in their match reports and attendance at monthly Association meetings and training seminars. Also of note this season has been the consistent umpiring of experienced umpires David Cullen, David Dobinson and Peter Ferguson and the continued development of newer umpires John Cauduro, Ean Martin and Darren Sutherland.

No Cricket Illawarra teams made it through to the Quarter or Semi Finals, which Cricket Illawarra hosted successfully at 4 of our local grounds. Cricket Illawarra does thank the 4 clubs for supporting and hosting games during the Finals series during the trying period between Christmas and New Year: Keira, Wollongong, Wests Illawarra & Port Kembla. The final series drew compliments from visiting teams on facilities and accommodation, and coordination of carnival.

The Semi Final match between Merewether and Dubbo was a classic, and had the sizeable attendance and Social Media followers riveted in closing stages of the match at Figtree Oval.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 31 Seniors – McDonalds Country Championships Held: Griffith, 28th to 30th November 2014 Squad: Jonathon Cook (c), Dale Scifleet (vc), Adam Berwick, Mitchell Calder, Shannon Crewdson, James Fleming, Neel Honavar, Mitchell McCrae, Tom McDevitt, Xavier McDevitt, Taun Stanham, Oliver Thompson, Rhys Voysey Officials: Steve Davies (coach), Mark Johnston (manager), Bill Godwin (scorer)

Illawarra travelled to Griffith for the McDonald's Country Championships in November. The carnival commenced on Friday with all four participating teams forming two lines on the No.1 Ground and observing a Minute's silence for the late Phillip Hughes. The Championships then got under way with all players wearing black arm bands.

Results:

Game 1: Illawarra 4/271 (Mitch McRae 140, Olly Thompson 35, Taun Stanham 35, Adam Berwick 30) Southern 194 (Neel Honavar 6/46, Dale Scifleet 4/13) Game 2: Illawarra 7/246 (Adam Berwick 64, Jono Cook 35no, Mitch McRae 31, Thomas McDevitt 23) Riverina 9/179 (Shannon Crewdson 3/43, Jono Cook 2/26) Game 3: Western 5/291 (Jono Cook 3/52) Illawarra 199 (Taun Stanham 63, Mitch McRae 38, Neel Honavar 24)

Game 1:

Illawarra faced neighbours Southern Zone in the opening clash on Ex Services No.2. Illawarra won the toss and batted in good conditions. Mitchell McCrea and Adam Berwick took their time getting through the new ball and then established an excellent partnership of 110 before Berwick went for 30. McCrea continued on with good support from Olly Thompson and Taun Stanham (who each made 35). McCrea brought up his hundred and went on with the job making a superb 140 off 153 balls which included 16 4s and one 6. His innings included shots all around the wicket and was a delight to watch. Illawarra tallied a healthy 5/271 off its 50 overs.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 32 In reply Southern were never really in the hunt and bundled out for 194 in 44.2 overs. Before the Championships coach Steve Davies told the Mercury that Illawarra 'lacked a quality medium paced bowler' and despite Steve suggesting he was mis-quoted two medium pacers- Neel Honavar and Dale Scifleet (who bowled some quick short spells) took all 10 between them with Neel taking 6/46 off 10 and Dale 4/13 off 7.2overs.

Game 2:

Illawarra played Riverina on Ex Services No.2 (which became our home ground). Captain Jonathon Cook won another important toss and openers Berwick and McCrea again proved a sturdy opening combination, putting on 71 before McCrea went for 31. The other batsmen all contributed useful scores with Berwick concentrating hard in the hot conditions to make 64 off 100 balls. Late innings runs from Cook (35no off 32) and Honavar 16no off 6 balls boosted Illawarra's score to 7/246 in conditions a lot harder for batting than the previous day.

Riverina quickly fell behind the rate and were 7/179 off 46 when a mid- afternoon shower ended proceedings. All the bowlers bowled reasonably well with Shannon Crewdson the pick with 3/43 and Cook 2/26.

Game 3:

Two wins meant Illawarra faced unbeaten Western on Day 3 to determine who went through to meet Newcastle in the final. Western won the toss and batted. An early wicket to Scifleet gave early hopes but Western then knuckled down and compiled a big score of 5/291 off 50 overs. They had a bit of luck with a couple of umpiring decisions but were extremely impressive in the way they went about their batting. Our bowlers tried hard but found it hard to extract much out of the conditions. Cook with 3/53 off 10 was the only multiple wicket taker.

Illawarra's chase got off to a steady start against tight bowling. Berwick and McCrea put on 41 before Berwick went for 15. We then lost steady wickets and the run rate required blew out. McCrea made 38 to finish a fine carnival with over 200 runs. Taun Stanham was in good touch and looked like giving Western a fright before he departed for 63 in the Power Play. Honavar made 24 and Illawarra was all out for 199 in the 44th over, meaning Western met Newcastle in the Country final. Western fully deserved their win.

This was a successful weekend for Illawarra and the players should be pleased with their performances. As a group they got on very well and played the game in the right spirit.

Round 1 Defeated by Western Zone Round 2 Defeated Central Coast Round 3 Defeated Southern Zone/ACT

Day 1 v Western – 7 November 2014 at Coffs Harbour Sport and Leisure No.2

After losing the toss Captain Tylar Edwards took the new ball and unleashed an explosive spell with the opening batsman wearing a few to the body, this was well supported by Nathan Marciante troubling the batsman with his shape. First change bower Toby Flynn-Duncombe made the breakthrough in his first over. A fine spell of 10 overs from off spinner Blake Owen tightened the batting side up with figures of 1/23. Changing of the bowlers was the key, with Jaryd Clancy grabbing a wicket early in his spell and Nikhil Verma doing the same. Lewis Smith bowled well early in his spell as did Sam Benson with the best of the bowlers Toby Flynn-Duncombe and Jarrod Colliss with 2/22 each. Sameer Murthy took two catches in the field and Tom O’Brien was tidy with the gloves taking two catches also. Set a total of 199 to win was a total well within our reach.

The run chase commenced with the loss of Tom O’Brien (6) and Tylar Edwards two balls later leaving us at 2/26. A 62 run partnership by Tom McDevitt and Toby had has on track when we lost Toby for 19. McDevitt was playing feely and hitting boundaries and the run chase was still on track. Still on track Colliss was out for 18. At 5/136 in the 31st over it looked like the run chase was still on however losing the next 4 wickets for 11 runs took the game away from us with McDevitt holing out down the ground for a smashing 79. All out for 163 and we were 36 runs short.

Day 2 v Central Coast – 8 November 2014 at Richardson 2

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 34 Winning the toss Tylar sent the opposition into bat. Our fielding was lacklustre at times and Central Coast were able to build regular partnerships on their way to building what was looking like a total of 270 plus at 3/189 at the 39th. Nathan Marciante with 2/37 off 10 overs, Jarryd Clancy 1/27 of 5, Sam Benson made two breakthroughs in three balls and finished with the figures of 2/37. Despite the breakthrough the runs continued until a run out pegged them back to 7/219 at the end of 43. Toby Flynn-Duncombe then pulled the rug out from under the opposition by taking 3 wickets in five balls to finish with figures of 3/28 including a very sharp catch from Tom O’Brien at keeper. With the last wicket also falling to a run out, we had a decent run chase ahead but not as many as it was looking with 10 overs to go. 235 the target.

A huge setback on the first ball of the innings losing Tom McDevitt. Tom Obrien (3) fell second ball of the second over and Tylar Edwards (13) out in the 7th leaving us at 3/25 with the top three batsman in the shed. Now at the crease with the two youngsters Toby Flynn Duncombe and Jarrod Colliss, both looked set approaching into the drinks break when Toby fell lbw last ball before drinks (18) a partnership of 48. The third of the youngsters Sameer Murthy came to the crease and offered valuable support to Colliss before Sameer (13) fell in the 29th over at 5/105 and we were facing a deficit of 131 off 21 overs. Sam Benson then strode to the crease and he Colliss set about the task at hand in workmanlike fashion, rotating the strike and Colliss doing the same as well as punishing those balls that warranted being hit to the boundary. A superb partnership of 108 was posted when Benson was dismissed in the 48th. The work was still left to be done with 21 runs needed off the final two overs. Jarrod Colliss impeccable innings continued, Colliss hitting 14 off the second last over and Marciante 2 we needed 7 off the last over. Colliss hit a 2 followed by a single and backed his partner Marciante who delivered the goods with a boundary taking us well past the total. The innings of Jarrod Colliss of 116 of 118 balls the outstanding highlight of the day.

Day 3 v Southern/ACT – 9 November 2014 at Coffs Sports Leisure 2

Only a 40 over game this day and another winning toss to the captain and we elected to have a bat. Again a top order failure had us in trouble at 3/18 off only 6 over- O’Brien (1) Edwards (4) and Flynn-Duncombe (0). Sameer Murthy was promoted up one position and batted well with Tom McDevitt posting a partnership of 74 before Murthy was caught for (15). Another partnership was built with the inform Colliss and McDevitt adding 63 before McDevitt was caught for 107 off 78 balls. Again a collapse saw us at 8/163 in the 33rd with Colliss (20), Marciante 3 and Verma (0). Another fightback was eminent which demonstrated the depth of this side. Sam Benson and Blake Owen posting 48 for the ninth wicket- Benson 26 not out and Owen a fly swatting 29 not out.

Our Southern cousins made their intentions early with runs flowing aplenty in the early overs at 0/31 off 3 until Toby Flynn-Duncombe received a favourable decision to a caught behind appeal. In a great piece of captaincy, spin was introduced and put a stop the free flowing runs for a period. Blake Owen landing a key wicket in his 5th over. Nikhil Verma bowled in partnership and finished with the respectable figures of 1/22. Jarryd Clancy chipped in with one wicket but the destroyer was Lewis Smith who finished with the figures of 3/24 off 7 overs and closed out the game in our favour, Benson adding a wicket also. A win over the Southern side by 34 runs.

Congratulations to Tom McDevitt, Jarrod Colliss and Tylar Edwards for their selection in the Country U19’s State Challenge sides.

Round 1 – Illawarra Defeated by Riverina Round 2 – Illawarra Defeated by Southern Zone/ACT Round 3 – Illawarra Defeated by Western Zone

Round 1

Game one of the tournament was against Riverina. The boys were reasonably fresh after good run with traffic coming from the Illawarra the previous afternoon.

We lost the toss on the first morning which meant we were to start in the field. There is absolutely no doubt that we had a very strong bowling attack in Purdevski, Ralston, Harvey, Colliss & Kornberger. After an up and down 50 overs the Riverina finished on 9/265. Harvey finished with the figures of 3/50, Purdevski 2/40 & Ralston 2/44.

A huge task to chase down. After a reasonable start we simply couldn’t build partnerships. Illawarra finished with 9/184. Waldock made 49 and Richards made 41.

Round 2

Game two saw us take the field against Southern/ACT. Batting first Illawarra could only compile 172. Henderson was the pick of the batsmen with 51 not out. Not being a great score, we had to ensure that we bowled well. Our bowling was solid, with wickets falling at regular intervals and when the rain and thunderstorms we were ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis system. The powers that be gave the game an extra hour to play to accommodate for the bad

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 36 weather and when it cleared and we returned to the field, our players had lost momentum and bowled and fielded poorly and Southern over ran us to win by two wickets. Ralston was the pick of the bowlers with 4/27.

Round 3

The final game of the carnival saw us pitted against Western. Batting first, Illawarra again lost wickets at regular intervals and just couldn’t put a strong partnership together. Murthy top scored with 61 not out and Waldock chipped in with 31.

Western appeared in control for the majority until Illawarra broke through for consecutive wickets to put a scare in the Western camp. Unfortunately, Illawarra couldn’t get the final two wickets and Western got the runs with two wickets in hand. Jason Ralston finished the day with the figures of 3/25.

Congratulations to Jason Ralston who was subsequently selected to trial in the state challenge.

Round 1: Illawarra 106 (J Collimore 29, T Warrington 16) Central Coast 119 (O Kocyan 2/11, M Watson 2/19) Round 2: Illawarra 37 (T Warrington 13) Riverina 1/42 (J Stojanovski 1/5) Round 3: Illawarra 9/98 (J Keyes 28, J Stojanovski 25no, M Stojanovski 14) Western 247 (J Stojanovski 5/25)

The first game of the 2015 Kookaburra 2015 campaign saw us up against Central Coast. After knocking the opposition over for 119 the boys felt that they are in with a great chance to start their 2015 campaign with a win. Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t get over line falling 13 runs short. Jack Collimore was the top scorer with 29. The close loss had a deflating effect on the boys in such a short competition which showed with the results for the rest of the competition. Our next game saw us take on Riverina which turned out to be a disaster. We were bowled out for 37. The third game saw us take on arch rival Western. At 1/0, 2/28 and 3/58 the boys felt they were in a great position. Unfortunately an 80 run partnership for the fourth wicket and a 56 run 9th wicket stand saw Western take their total to 247. Young up and coming fast bowler James Stojanovski was the pick of the bowlers taking 5/25 off 8 overs. An injury to the other opening bowler in Matt Watson didn’t help the situation however overall, our bowling was very poor. The disappointing batting form continued with only Jono Keyes (28) and James Stojanovski (25 n.o.) the only batsmen to show any resistance.

Overall this tournament was very disappointing and showed a huge weakness in the development of Cricket Illawarra’s junior program. This has resulted in a review which will hopefully improve the coaching systems and training programs. There is no easy fix for this problem and it will take a team effort from all clubs, parents, supporters, coaches and Cricket Illawarra management to work together and provide an opportunity for all players to perform at their best and push for higher honours.

Congratulations to Jonathon Keyes, Callum Dodds, Jamie Sarkhosh who were selected to trial in the U14 State Challenge and James Stojanovski in the U13 State Challenge.

Finally, thank you to Oscar Oborn-Corby who was my assistant coach for the tournament. Oscar is someone who has excellent knowledge about cricket and the way things should be and I hope Cricket Illawarra utilise his knowledge in the future.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 38 SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAMS

SGC – Kingsgrove Sport Twenty20 Cup Squad: David Murphy (c), Adam Berwick, Corbin Brown, Mitchell Calder, Shannon Crewdson, Jarrod Colliss, Jamie Fleming, Maciu Gauna, Nathan Marciante, Xavier McDevitt, Dale Scifleet, Taun Stanham, Oliver Thompson, Rhys Voysey Officials: Dean Merola (coach), Paul Cram (assistant coach / manager), Margaret Pemberton (scorer)

After the success of winning one game in the 2013/14 season, this season was always going to be more of a battle.

The loss of 8 key experienced players would test the depth of Cricket in the Illawarra. It would also bring opportunities for young players in the district to test their skills, which has been the goal of Cricket Illawarra for some time

This year there was an expansion of the competition allowing Illawarra to play an extra game, as well as a double header at North Dalton Park.

The first double header was against two leading Sydney Clubs in Eastern Suburbs and Randwick-Petersham.

The first game against Eastern Suburbs was a real test, with Eastern Suburbs batting first and tallying a handy 4-184 with Ian Moran dominating for a well compiled 77. Illawarra batted well in the chase but were never really a winning chance ending up with 7-148 with Adam Berwick top scoring with an excellent 64* (44). 16 year old Jarrod Collis bowled well with 2-10 on debut.

In game 2 Illawarra tested last year’s champions Randwick-Petersham taking the game to the last over. Randwick tallied a healthy 6-175 with Dale Scifleet taking 2-32 and Adam Berwick 2-28,. Illawarra batted gallantly but tight bowling at the death restricted the challenge to 7-161 after looking a real chance of winning with three overs to go. Olly Thompson 49 (35) and Mitch Calder 41 (26) were the pick of the batsmen but a late flurry of wickets slowed the chase. A good effort overall.

The following Sunday Illawarra travelled to Chatswood oval to take on Sydney CC and Gordon CC.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 39 In the first match Illawarra Sydney batted first and the Illawarra bowler did exceptionally well to restrict them to 7- 143 off their allotted overs. Great bowling from Scifleet 3-15 and fielding including direct hit from Crewdson were the highlights.

Illawarra started the chase strongly and were on target for victory until once again nerves seemed to get the better when the chase was halted with late wickets. The team finishing agonisingly close, losing by one run. Inexperience, costing the team at a vital stage. Olly Thompson 63 (42) and Mitch Calder 35* (24) were again the pick of the batsmen. A disappointing loss after getting within sight of victory.

The final game was against Gordon and again Illawarra were to bowl first for the fourth time in a row. Again Illawarra bowled well, especially through the middle stages to restrict Gordon to 8-142 when it looked like being a far greater total early in the innings. X. McDevitt was outstanding opening the bowling with 2-13. Jamie Fleming 2- 18 was also crucial.

Again after getting off to a flyer 0-44 off 3 overs, Illawarra seemed to lose their way in the middle overs losing too many cheap wickets on the boundary at wrong times. Eventually being bundled out for 114, with two overs to spare. Very disappointing finish to the game considering the start. D. Murphy 38 (20) and J. Colliss 30* (22) were by far the best batsmen with little support from others.

Overall it was encouraging to see Illawarra being so competitive at the top level in Club Cricket. The bowling and catching was excellent in all 4 games.

The areas of improvement required for next year are clearly in areas of the batting and ground fielding, in particular throwing. The Sydney teams clearly showed superior athleticism and anticipation in this department. The running between wickets was also a concerning aspect of Illawarra’s game, giving up numerous opportunities to build the innings.

It was good to see so many local juniors get the chance to test their skills at this level and show them what is required to be successful in this sport. Application is the key and with increasing busy schedules on many people agendas this seems very difficult for people to achieve.

Thanks to my support staff Paul Cram who helped with game strategy and planning while Marg Pemberton added professionalism to the scoring department. The wagon wheels she produced helped with the analysis of the players and where improvements can be made.

There is a definite shift in culture in Cricket in the Illawarra at the moment. Players are not showing the levels of commitment required for success, especially at the next level. With the ample opportunities given to players these days to succeed this is a major concern. Illawarra will not remain competitive without an attitude change. More commitment needed by players and more support from clubs and committees.

I have enjoyed working as the senior Coach the past two seasons at this elite level but found myself frustrated by the lack of professionalism shown.

Round 1 26/10/14 v Penrith @ Figtree Oval Illawarra got off to a good start in the DCA with a victory over Penrith in Round 1. Illawarra bowled Penrith out for 165 in the 39th over. Illawarra passed Penrith total and finished 7/170.

Batting: Daine Richards 36, Gyan Wijekulasuriya 27no Bowling: Shane Clayton 3/23, Jason Ralston 2/31

Round 2 02/11/14 v Hornsby @ Parklands Oval Due to U17 commitments the team was missing three regular players and went into the game under strength.

Illawarra batted first and were bowled out for 192. Hornsby struggled early, some good bowling had them 7/105 after 40 overs. In a tight match, Hornsby needed 10 runs from the last over, 2 off the last ball. Unfortunately Illawarra lost by 1 run.

Batting: Matthew Calder 51, Tyson Barrett 36 Bowling: Matthew Calder 3/30, Tyson Barrett 2/18

Round 3 09/11/14 v Parramatta @ McCreadie Oval Parramatta batted first and with some poor bowling and fielding from the Illawarra team, Parramatta cruised to 5/285 from their 60 overs.

With a large run chase Illawarra’s batting collapsed early and continued their poor day being bowled out for a dismal 114.

Batting: Daine Richards 28, Gyan Wijekulasuriya 28 Bowling: Matthew Calder 3/73, Gyan Wijekulasuriya 1/36, Kaden Horsley 1/41

Round 4 16/11/14 v Camden @ King George Oval Illawarra batted first and got off to a good start early however a collapse in the middle put them under pressure until the tail enders helped resurrect and post a defendable total of 199.

Camden lost 2 early wickets but with some steady batting in the middle pushed Camden towards Illawarra’s total however with some fiery bowling from Jason Ralston, Camden was bowled out for 176.

Illawarra headed into game 5 with 2 wins and 2 losses.

Batting: Jason Ralston 42, Kyle Trebel 41 Bowling: Jason Ralston 3/18, Billy Dean 2/21

Round 5 23/11/14 v North Shore @ Tantallon Oval

North Shore batted first on an extremely hot day and took advance of a good wicket and knocked up a total of 7/249.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 42 The heat played a big part of a poor run chase and saw Illawarra struggle most of the innings, being bowled out for 141.

Batting: Tyson Barrett 34, Gyan Wijekulasuriya 23no Bowling: Gyan Wijekulasuriya 5/29, Kyle Trebel 1/35

At the conclusion of the round Illawarra had 2 wins and 3 losses and had to wait for other results to determine a finals position. Unfortunately they tied and missed out on the finals by 0.020 quotient.

Finally, Congratulations to all the boys who have been involved in the junior rep program that I coached since the Under 11 development squad. It has been a pleasure coaching you and watching you all improve and enhance your skills along the way. I hope you will all continue support Cricket Illawarra as you move into the senior ranks and wish you all the best in your cricket futures.

Under 15 – Weblin Shield Squad: Jye Phillips (c), Matt Calder, Ryan Castles, Harry Magennis (wk), Liam Mikleus, Tane Nunn, Sam Okely, Brandon Redman, Patrick Rees, Caelan Smith, Wesley Van Kempen, Kade Warrington Officials: Dale Scifleet (coach), Tony Okely (manager)

Games played: 6 - Won 2 Lost 4.

Notable performances:

Tane Nunn: 107 not out vs Hawkesbury, Round 5 NSW DCA Jye Phillips: 106 vs Hawkesbury, Round 5 NSW DCA Pat Rees: 72 vs Georges River/St George, Round 3 NSW DCA Tane Nunn: 64 not out vs Blacktown, Round 2, NSW DCA

Although the team lost more games that they won, several of these games were definitely “winnable” and could have easily resulted in a 4-2 record and possible place in the next round of the DCA. The team’s bowling and fielding made them competitive in most matches. However, we struggled with the bat in most games, failing to post large enough scores to defend or chase down against the stronger teams.

The season started with our regular “trial” match against a strong Newcastle team. After winning the toss, Newcastle batted out their 45 overs, comfortably making 181. All bowlers were tight and tidy, with Brandon Redman (2/30 off 10 overs) and Tane Nunn (2/22 off 9) the pick. Illawarra made 96 from their 45 overs and were 7/29 at one stage before Matt Calder (29) and CJ Smith (20) “rescued” innings and allowed Illawarra to get close to posting a respectable score.

Round 1: Our first DCA game was against a strong Camden team who batted first. Tight bowling again (only 5 extras) saw Camden at 8/142 at one stage before a 9th wicket partnership of 43 allowed them to reach 193 off 56 overs. Pick of the bowlers were Brandon Redman (3/37 off 12 overs) and Matt Calder (3/42 off 12). Despite a 57 run partnership between Kade Warrington (34) and Jye Phillips (32), Illawarra were bowled out for 140.

Round 2 Illawarra were away to Blacktown. After winning the toss and electing to bat Blacktown were bowled out for 123 after only 38 overs. Another great team effort (only 5 extras) with Wes Van Kempen (3/20 off 10 overs) and Ryan Castles (3/9 off 5 overs) outstanding. Illawarra chased down the runs in 45 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Tane Nunn the pick of the batsmen finishing with 64 not out.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 43 Round 3 saw Illawarra at home to Georges River/St George. Playing our first game on Dalton Park was a thrill for many of the boys. After winning the toss and batting, Illawarra looked set for a big total after an opening partnership of 115 between Kade Warrington (40) and Patrick Rees (72). The team finished with 6/209 after the 60 overs, which was probably 50-60 runs short of what was hoped for after such a promising start. Georges River chased down these runs in 53 overs with the loss of only 4 wickets. Illawarra had their chances in the field but praise must go to Georges River who kept their focus and batted well to win. This was one of those games that was definitely there to win.

Round 4 was away to Hornsby, who were undefeated and ended up making the final. In a rain-reduced match (48 overs per side) Hornsby won the toss and batted first. Illawarra started well, picking up the first 3 wickets for only 25 runs. We then let the pressure off and unfortunately allowed Hornsby to reach 239, which was always going to be hard to chase down, even on the small ground. Illawarra batted valiantly, and must be commended on the way they approached the run chase. The game again was winnable, but the team fell just short scoring 9/219. Fine knocks were made by Tane Nunn (46), Ryan Castles (45) and Sam Okely (45).

Round 5 The final DCA match was against Hawkesbury at Keira Oval. Illawarra were outstanding, winning the toss on a very, very hot day and batting first. The team reached 5/261 after 60 overs, with Tane Nunn (107 n.o) and Jye Phillips (106) combining for a 196 run partnership and deservedly scoring the first centuries in this team in 5 years of rep cricket. Jye backed up his century with 3 for 38 off 12 overs as Hawkesbury reached 7/188. This was a great way to finish the rep season and hopefully the team can build on this in the coming year.

Many thanks for the parents who helped with scoring and hosting of home matches.

Under 14 – Moore Shield Team: Jonathon Keyes (c), Joshua Debbes, Callum Dodds, Aubrey Duncan, Nicholas Hay, Owen Kocyan, Brody Murrell, Jamie Sarkhosh, Blake Sewell, Mitchell Stojanovski, Tyler Warrington, Matthew Watson Officials: Tim Carter (coach), Paul Warrington (manager)

Moore Shield this season proved to be a very tough series of matches for this young group.

Our first game against Camden was a tough initiation. The only score of any note was Jono Keys with 32 not out in total of 101. Our bowling however did have its moments with consistent fall of wickets. Camden were 1/46, 2/83, 3/87, 4/91, 5/95, 6/97 and 7/99. At the latter end of Camden’s innings, with wickets falling consistently, the boys thought they were a chance. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be with Camden passing the score 7 wickets down.

The next game against Canberra showed that the boys can certainly be competitive with the best teams. Watson and Sarkhosh were the best of the bowlers in the Canberra innings taking four and three wickets respectively in a total of 236. The Illawarra innings showed potential but without support from team mates, Keyes (98) and Warrington (47) were the only batsmen on note in a total of 7/215.

The third game saw us take on Georges River. From their 50 overs they managed 3/201. Our batting was the most disappointing part with the team being dismissed for 70. Again, Keyes was the only one that offered any resistance with a score of 23.

The fourth game saw the Illawarra take on Sutherland. This game saw us drop 8 or more catches so that alone made it very difficult to be competitive. Sutherland made 198 from their 50 overs in very good bowling display but

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 44 an extremely poor fielding effort. Unfortunately again our batting couldn’t stand up and we were bowled out for 105. Keyes top scored with 34.

The final game saw the Illawarra take on North Shore in an extremely disappointing effort. We were bowled out for 73 with a top score of 33 from M. Stojanovski. North Shore made 136 dec. and put us back in to attempt an outright win. In a very wet and controversial innings, Illawarra were 9 for 32 at the close of play, avoiding an outright defeat.

Overall, this was a difficult competition for the boys with several new players joining the squad from previous age group competitions. I hope these boys have a solid preseason working hard on their skills base and come out raring to go for next seasons DCA competition. Finally I would like to thank Paul Warrington for his support and help as team manager which made my job much easier.

Under 13 – Gee Shield Squad: James Stojanovski (c), Aidan Cook (vc), Khy Bostock, Preston Campana, Ryan Chard, Samuel Conte, Liam Gervaise, Flynn Patison, Brandon Silcox, Arun Wanstall, Harry Williams, Ben Worsfold, Officials: Chris Cranny (coach), Zac Stojanovski (manager)

The U/13 team played 10 games during the season. 5 games were played in Gee Shield DCA comp where we finished 1 from 5. We played in Ken Crossley/Barry Maine Shield which we lost, and 4 games at Orange carnival winning 2 from 4.

The Gee Shield campaign commenced with a win, which turned out to be our only win. We competed well in all matches but could not build partnerships through our batting innings to pressure opposition bowlers. No players made a century or took 5 wickets in an innings, however Brandon Silcox made 54no in our first match against Northern Districts.

During the Orange carnival, we lost our captain James Stojanovski to the Kookaburra Cup, however Aidan Cook & Brandon Silcox did a fine job and led the side admirably. We won 2 out of 4 games, beating Wagga Wagga & Dubbo. We were very competitive against Central Coast.

After the rep season had concluded, James Stojanovski, Aidan Cook, Flynn Patison, Brandon Silcox, Sam Conte & Preston Campana were selected in the South Coast Marlins side to play in the U/13 State Challenge in Dubbo. Although Preston Campana pulled out, James Stojanovski scored an unbeaten half century during the challenge.

The U/13’s are a talented group of cricketers and have bright futures in the game.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 45 Exciting times for the Illawarra U12s! The group underwent a strong pre-season as part of the Development Squad, where particular focus was targeted towards developing the integral skills in their game in preparation for the season. Following the trials, a handful of players joined this group to form our rep team.

In the Arch Cawsey Shield, whilst not coming out with a win, the team showed a lot of pride and development as the year progressed. We were highly competitive in 4 of the 5 games, and placing ourselves in winning positions, just unable to close the deal. Positively, there are plenty of good signs to come, with a great bunch of players all contributing in some manner to the team throughout the year.

In January, the side travelled to Lismore to play in a Country Carnival with various representative sides from Country NSW and in the Sydney Metropolitan region. The group obtained their first victory in this carnival, with a 10 wicket victory on the final day, a just reward for their hard work and persistence.

Individually, there were some strong performances throughout the season which should be recognised.

Our leading run scorer was Jayden Zahra-Smith with 157 runs at 31.40 with a high score of 54, with an honourable mention to Liam Constable scoring the only other half century with 51. Jayden also the leading run scorer at Lismore with 109 runs at 27.25 with a high score of 50*.

Our leading wicket taker was Daniel Wark who took 8 wickets at 13.13 with best figures of 5/24, nearly bowling us to victory against Blacktown, in which we took the last wicket as a run out, unfortunately one run after they passed our total. Liam Constable and Matthew Roberts were our leading wicket takers in Lismore with 7 apiece at 8.00 and 10.17 respectively. Matt Roberts achieved the wily, yet incredible figures of 4/3.

Congratulations must go to Jayden Zahra-Smith, Seth Collier and Jamie Phillipson for their selection in the Cricket NSW Academy Squad for the Illawarra Zone. Also congratulations to be forwarded to Kayla Burton who was selected in the Cricket NSW Female Academy Squad for the Illawarra / Southern Zone. Proud to see the four of them progress through as they all worked extremely hard throughout the season and have a lot of potential.

The 2014/15 rep season was a great one to be a part of with this top group of players. I wish them all the best for their off season sports and cricketing endeavours, and look forward to seeing more performances from them next year!

We would like to begin by congratulating every member of the 2014-15 Under 11 squad, on their excellent representation of our region in their first experience of higher level cricket.

We had several goals at the beginning of the season, which we can proudly state were achieved by the completion of the season.

Our season goals were:

 An improved skill set of cricket fundamentals;  An improved working knowledge of the game;

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 46  To make a significant contribution through either their batting, bowling or fielding in at least one of the experiences (games) throughout the season.  To build and add to team spirit and harmony by not only performing to their best, but to encourage & support their teammates in achieving their best.  To at all times, act in the ‘spirit of the game’, by displaying a high level of sportsmanship & positive behaviour, both on & off the field.

Whilst there were many outstanding individual ‘highlights’, our greatest level of satisfaction occurred at the end of the season, when we realised that every squad member had achieved the goals established at the start! This wonderful achievement reflected a number of facts, namely: the hard work and endeavour of every player, the encouragement & support by parents & the support of the Cricket Illawarra management. To the entire 2014-15 Under 11 Rep “Family”, congratulations on a successful and enjoyable season.

Steel City Challenge: Newcastle V Illawarra, Oct, 2015

What a great game this turned out to be...... with both teams displaying a high level of effort & desire throughout a long, hot day.

The Novacastrian’s won the toss and batted first. Our opening bowlers set the standard, producing two tight spells, which was repeated throughout the innings. Callum’s sensational hat trick was always going to highlight the bowler’s column, with Ky 2/7 and Mason 2/13, the other wicket-takers. Importantly, William, Bhargav & Cody performed crucial roles in limiting the scoring, when their middle order batsmen started to attack.

Chasing 106, we experienced the worst possible start, losing a wicket first ball. Our top order ‘dug in’, & steadied the ship, which our middle order took full advantage of.

Andy displayed some terrific attacking shots & remained unbeaten on 25. Other contributors to the scorebook were 14, from a very resilient Mason, Ky 12 & 7 from Captain Nate. We reached Newcastle’s target of 106 in the 35th over, with only 3 wickets down.

Thanks to Pat Nolan and Brett Buckley for their scoring duties throughout the day & to the team for representing Illawarra in a respectful & professional manner.

Ron Arendts Shield: Newcastle, January, 2015

The squad returned to Newcastle for the prestigious Ron Arendts Shield, with 16 teams/regions playing 5 games over 4 days.

Game 1 (T20) Illawarra V Manly

It was always going to be a tough start to the week when you play a powerhouse region like Manly, who were also last year’s champions. They batted first tallying 93 for the loss of 7 wickets. Whilst we bowled soundly, some fielding glitches including our positional play did not help our cause. Rhys, Andy & Billy were the pick of our bowlers & each were rewarded with a wicket.

With the willow, we were in trouble from the beginning, losing wickets at regular intervals during the first 10 overs. Our leaders, Captain Nate & VC Andy then produced an excellent partnership which gave us hope as we progressed towards their total. Their dismissal unfortunately, triggered a collapse which resulted in our run chase finishing 23 runs short of our opponents. Andy top scored with 23, Nate made 18 & Joel (9) & Rhys (8) looked good before their dismissals.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 47 Game 2 (T20) Illawarra V Newcastle Girls First XI

Batting first, we started solidly against a steady home town attack. Our opposition bowled & fielded enthusiastically, but without the venom & experience of our earlier opponents. We certainly enjoyed the experience, with Rhys batting superbly & was unbeaten on 29. Mason’s 21 was also a highlight.

We then bowled accurately with the ball & with an improved fielding performance, we strangled their run rate. Callum bowled beautifully & was well supported by other wicket takers, Nate, Mason & Joel, who gave the keeping gloves to Issabella. In a recording our first win, congratulations to Issabella who performed an excellent leadership role against her Novacastrian peers.

Game 3 Illawarra V Inner West Harbour

The first of our 40 over games resulted in a fine overall performance, in which we hung on for an exciting victory. Batting first, we started slowly, before Callum (24) & Nate (15) combined in a wonderful attacking partnership. With fine contributions from Andy (23) & Billy (15), we finished on 106 for the loss of 8 wickets. Inner West’s run chase started strongly, with our total looking ‘a little skinny’ by the halfway mark of their innings. Impressively, our fielding stepped up to support some disciplined bowling & our opponents fell 4 runs short of our total. It was truly a team performance in which everyone contributed to the outcome. Recording wickets were: Andy (2), Hunter (2, both excellent batsmen) & one (1) each to Callum, Billy & Nate.

Game 4 Illawarra V North West Sydney

Against a very talented & disciplined team, we were soundly beaten, despite a wonderful knock from Rhys. Batting first, the top order found the going tough against a ferocious opening attack. We were certainly proud of their courage against the quickest bowlers of the carnival & it also highlighted how good Rhys’ innings was. He played every stroke in the book in his innings of 35, which nearly made half of the 79 that we finished with. Whilst it was always going to be difficult to defend on a fast outfield, we stuck to our task to the very last ball. Moving forward, we discovered the importance of multiple contributions when trying to build a sizeable total.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 48 Game 5 Illawarra V Newcastle President’s XI

This game was always going to be close encounter between two very evenly matched teams. It ended up being surely the match of the carnival, see- sawing from one team to the other throughout & the result decided in the 80th & last over of the day! Batting first, we displayed both patience & aggression in reaching a very healthy 152. Rhys continued his good form, with 28 classy runs from the No.3 position. Andy (30) & Nate (39 n.o.) then took over, combining beautifully for their 69 run partnership, which was the best of the carnival. Whilst there was some wonderful stroke play, their running between the wickets & patience at various stages, was also impressive. The remaining batsmen also played their part, with a number of quick singles & sundries taken, which had not happened earlier in the week. With the ball, we started strongly, with tight bowling & fielding creating significant run pressure. By the halfway mark of the innings, the Novacastrians had lost half their batsmen & they were well behind in the run rate. Defending the total looked a formality. Suddenly, some terrific stroke play changed the momentum quickly, as multiple boundaries were hit. All of a sudden we looked tired in the field, as Newcastle steamed towards victory. Jonty who had bowled well, then gained the breakthrough, with Ky taking a great catch in front of square. This seemed to ‘awaken’ the fielder, who was then thrown the ball for the final overs. Four wickets later, he had contributed to what, what was looking like an ‘improbable’ win. Hunter (2), Callum (2), Victor (1) & Jonty (1) also took wickets. More importantly, it was a fantastic team performance & clearly our best of the week. Once again, everyone contributed, with special mention made of our captains Nate & Andy who rose to the occasion with their talk & leadership in those desperate last overs. It was a sensational day of cricket & sport at its best.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 49 LOCAL SENIOR COMPETITION In the local senior competition two separate competitions were conducted, Premiership and Twenty20, played in 4 grades between the 10 affiliated clubs. There were 860 registered senior role players across the 42 teams.

The Premiership competitions in 1st and 2nd Grades were conducted as a combination of 2-Day cricket and hybrid limited 50-Over formats, while the 3rd & 4th Grade Premierships were limited over formats of 50 and 45 overs respectively. The Twenty20 competitions (20 overs per side) were held over 3 days having 5 rounds in two pools for each grade.

This season a reserve weekend for premiership finals was reintroduced in all grades, due to recent seasons having wet or washed out finals. This reintroduction meant less playing Saturdays available for preliminary rounds and necessitated the scheduling of a Sunday round in the top three grades to maintain uniformity and equalised rounds. This concept had mixed reactions although the 1st grade final did progress into the reserve weekend for a short period to get a result. The congested season of rep and local programs also meant no Under 21 competition could be run.

Disappointingly which affected all clubs, Port Kembla 3rd grade was removed from the competition after repeated forfeits occurring in the first 5 rounds. This caused a bye in both 3rd grade competition formats and also combining with 4th grade already having a bye, meant 22 players were left without a game each weekend.

On the positive side, it is pleasing to note the club match day administrative requirements improved dramatically on previous seasons with only a few fines issued for late results and reports, and the most pleasing fact being no grading infringements recorded.

The season generally only had a few washed out days. The T20 semi-finals were conducted at two ‘mega’ venues (North Dalton & Figtree) matching the qualifying clubs and grades (1-4) as best as possible, which created a carnival atmosphere. All finals occurred at North Dalton. Many thanks go to the sponsors of this competition and a first for CI with TV coverage of the 1st and 2nd grade T20 finals via BarTV in licensed clubs. The premiership final series were held at the traditional best rated venues.

The following sections highlight all the season award winners and statistics.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2014-15 Page | 61 LOCAL JUNIOR COMPETITION The 2014/15 season saw 55 Illawarra club teams entered for Saturday morning competitions. A new initiative of moving the Gala Days to a Pre-Season Cup was trialled. This meant the first few weeks were played as 10 x 5 ball over format with 2 games per team each morning. General feedback indicated this change was well received in the younger age groups but not so warmly embraced in the older ones. An unfortunate side-effect of this trial was that South Coast chose to not enter the Combined Comp in the older Age Groups. So for the first time in 20 years the U14A and Under 16 Age groups were an Illawarra only comp. Time will tell as to whether this break in the Combined Comp is a one-off or not.

Thirroul were again the stand-out club fielding the most teams from T20 Blast through to Under 16Bs and contesting 3 Grand Finals. Whilst they did not manage to win any of those Grand Finals they were comprehensive winners of the Club Championship – going back to back. Congratulations to President Chris Collimore and his Club. Dapto won three Premierships, Wollongong won two, and Keira and Wests won one each.

The T20 Blast program was run by Cricket Illawarra this season, again on Friday nights, but this time rotating between 4 club venues. Similar numbers registered to the previous season. 22 of these participants were invited to a day at the Sydney Test and another 11 attended a Big Bash game in Sydney – both groups getting the chance to go out on the ground. Many thanks to Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW for providing our Juniors with these opportunities.

The Dapto Under 14s T20 side again had a great run of results getting all the way to Hurstville Oval for the State Final of the Weet-bix Cup. Keira emulated them by making the same game in the Under 16s. Thirroul U12s fell at the penultimate hurdle in the Regional Final. Illawarra cricket should be proud of the way these clubs performed and conducted themselves in this competition.

Special mention and many thanks to the junior competition committee for their time, effort and support, and on a job well done undertaking the vital committee roles:

Chair: Doug Murphy (CI committee member and junior delegate to CI meetings) Secretary: Scott Sigmond Competition Manager: Sally Whitehouse Grounds Co-ordinator: Brian Whitehouse Result Managers: (U16 A&B, U14A) – Matt Hancox (Thirroul), (U14B) – Sander Kroes (University) – (U12) Doug Murphy, (U11 & U10) – Sally Whitehouse Publicity Manager: Cathy Harding (Balgownie)

Due to Easter and School Holidays the junior presentation was held on a Sunday afternoon in mid-April in the Master Builders Auditorium and was once again well attended. Congratulations to all the season competition and individual award winners. (A full list of winners later in the report).

Special thanks to the NMTG group (Brendan Birmingham) who sponsored the Pre-Season Cup. Michael Driscoll (Illawarra Mercury) for his continued support with the junior cricket stories and results regularly appearing in the weekly Junior Sport section of the paper especially under the changing circumstances of the Media industry.

To all club officials, players, coaches, managers, scorers, parents and anyone associated with junior cricket this season, thank you for the assistance in enabling junior persons to play cricket in the Illawarra region and let us all look forward to next season.

Doug Murphy – Chair
