President’s Report

It is most pleasing to be able to report an excellent year for the Parramatta District Cricket Club.

With strong on field performances, a growing Bleed Blue Parra Culture, some pleasing developments off the field, and a solid financial base, the club is in a strong position to consolidate a regular place as one of the very best clubs in .

Team Performances were highlighted by:

 A brilliant undefeated effort to take out the Poidevin Gray Shield for the second time in 4 years.

A young team well led by Tim Ward, this team comprehensively won the Final through a tremendous effort with the bat, especially 95 by the skipper, and an inspiring effort in the field. Tim Ward won the Medal for Player of the Final.

With every player still young enough to play Under 21 again next season, this squad should impose themselves on the tournament again next year and provide a strong pipeline of future First Graders, with Tim Ward and Owen Simonsen having already broken through.

 Parra Men’s First Grade appeared in the Semi Finals of both the Kingsgrove Sports T20 and the Belvidere Cup and performing extremely well in both. Again, tremendous leadership from young skipper Nick Bertus, and some brilliant efforts in the field highlighted Parramatta’s season. To win a competition, a strong top 3 with the bat and top shelf opening bowlers are required. In this regard, we are well served by openers Brenton Cherry and Will Affleck, with Nick Bertus at No. 3.

To have two opening bowlers, Ben Martin and Scott Copperfield, as amongst the leading takers in Sydney is a pleasure the club has also not experienced since the 1960’s.

Both Semi’s were rain affected and these undeniably affected the conduct of the games. Parramatta’s courageous performance in the Semi-final against Sydney University was quite noteworthy. The appalling conditions provided by Sydney Uni warranted the complaint lodged by our club, and which resulted in Uni losing the right to host the Final. Uni.s negative tactics with 8 or 9 boundary fielders for whole Parramatta innings was in stark contrast to the aggressive Parramatta approach.

This team has great self-belief. These players believe they can win in any situation – a tribute to their skill and their leadership.

Richie Benaud would surely be pleased with that approach.

7

Parramatta’s Semi-final of the T20 was notable as Parramatta’s first appearance at the SCG since Central Cumberland’s Finals appearances in the .

 Our Women’s 2nd Grade reached the Final for the second year running only to lose another rain affected finals match. The solid Parramatta total of 6/142 was achieved despite the second half of the innings being shortened dramatically by rain, ultimately receiving only 32 overs. St George, second, could work to the conditions and reached the adjusted target of 129, also with 6 down. It all augurs well for another strong performance in the coming year to try and bring home our first Women’s Premiership.

Parramatta had some sparkling Individual Performances which clearly laid a platform for the positive team’s results.

These were certainly highlighted by Nick Bertus’s brilliant batting to break all the long-held Season Aggregate records of

John Benaud (Belvidere Cup)

Bruce Neill (First Grade – all competitions) and

Terry Walters (all Grades).

Bert led by example throughout the season and was selected in a number of representative games. He backed this up with an outstanding performance behind the stumps. With 34 catches and 4 stumpings Nick is now rated amongst the best batsman/keepers in NSW.

He is on the cusp of reaching higher levels with continued outstanding performances. Bert was a worthy winner of the Bill Anderson Player of the Year.

Nick Bertus takes a single to break Bruce Neill’s “All Competitions” Aggregate Record

Other outstanding individual highlights included:

 Tim Ward’s 1,040 run season including his Poidevin Gray runs scoring where he led the competition aggregate with 381 runs. His double century in 2nd Grade catapulted him into the top grade where he made a credible start at this level. Combined with his brilliant , strong leadership and character, Tim has a bright future.  Three double centuries recorded – Nick Bertus 215 vs Western Suburbs, Tim Ward 203* vs North Sydney, and Kelsey Miller 201* vs .  Kelsey and Rebecca Miller topping the 2nd Grade competition run scoring list with 433 and 430 runs respectively

8

 Superb batting in the Brewer Shield where Hayley Silver-Holmes, Elise Noble and Molly Godsell were the competition’s 3 leading run scorers with 345, 227 and 197 respectively.  Scott Copperfield’s 47 wickets and Ben Martin’s 46 wickets, which made them the most successful opening bowling combination in Sydney.  Ben Martin’s 10 wicket haul against St. George incl 6/22 in the first innings which led to a rare outright win. It was the first ten wicket haul since 2003-4 when Daniel Jackson took 5 in each innings against Bankstown.  Nick Bertus and Ben Martin being named in the Sydney Cricket Association Merit XI  Ben Abbott (5th) and Adam Turrell (8th) in the top 10 strike rates in Sydney, both striking at 100. Ben Abbott hit 21 sixes in the season, ranking 6th in Sydney.  Two amazing partnerships o 330 for the 2nd wicket between Will Affleck and Nick Bertus vs Western Suburbs o 285 for the 1st wicket between Kelsey Miller (201*) and Rebecca Miller (63*) vs Bankstown  Kate Peterson, Hayley Silver-Holmes and Elise Noble who were 3 of the top 4 bowlers in Brewer Shield  Emma Coughlan-Ryan who was the leading wicket taker in Sydney Women’s 2nd Grade.

That would be SIX to Ben Abbott vs Blacktown at Merrylands Oval

It is clear that a great many things are going right at our club.

Our playing talent is strong, and building through our leading Academy.

Our Coaching program is excellent, the Men’s program led by Jason Coleman and a strong panel of coaches, while the Women’s Program is led by Ron Wood.

Our Women’s Club is competing well and growing rapidly.

Our financial position is sound. We have benefitted greatly by successful Grant Applications to the tune of $40,000 towards the cost of the new Benaud Score Board at Old Kings Oval.

We live in hope that our extensive plans for Old Kings Oval and Oval will eventually bear fruit. During the year, a Council study identified Richie Benaud Oval as the most suitable Oval in the Parramatta Local Government area for the installation of a new turf wicket facility. This is sorely needed to cope with the growing needs of men’s and women’s and multi-cultural cricket in our area.

The millions of dollars currently being poured into another new on the site of the old Cumberland Oval give us some hope that some funding may eventually be available to improve the area

9 immediately adjacent to the new stadium including Old Kings and surrounds, to bring the facilities up to reasonable modern standards. Extensive proposals and architect drawn concept plans have been submitted regularly to Council and to Parramatta Park Trust. Council is currently considering Richie Benaud Oval as part of its next 5-10 year plan.

Our area is in the unique situation at present with no Parramatta Leagues Club Board due to substantial governance changes occurring, no Parramatta City Councillors or Holroyd Councillors due to the NSW Government’s amalgamation and restructuring of both local government areas. We anticipate and welcome the election of new Boards and Councils in the coming months.

Congratulations to Holroyd Council, now amalgamated with Auburn and re-named Cumberland Council! We thank Merv Ismay and all the Councillors from Holroyd Council over the years for their excellent support of the Club. They will all be gratified to hear that Merrylands Oval won the Lower Grade Ground of the Year for the second year running. It is the Club’s intention to play more First Grade at Merrylands in the coming years, in particular T20 and One Day matches to which Merrylands is well suited.

Similarly, we thank the outgoing Parramatta City Councillors, particularly those who assisted with the set of recommendations regarding the recognition of Richie Benaud, and the resolutions regarding Old Kings Oval and Richie Benaud Oval. We trust these can be followed through and delivered when a new Council is elected.

While we did not hold a fundraising luncheon this year, we intend to do so again in the coming Ashes season.

Our Golf Classic was successful again and our sincere thanks to Doug who supports our club to the hilt each year.

Our player development pipeline is working extremely well. The Parramatta Cricket Academy is producing excellent results, with the Green Shield boys making the semi-finals in a most successful campaign, as did our B6 development team.

Academy member, Green Shield , NSW Age Squad member, Poidevin Gray opening bowler and all-rounder, 15 yr. old Jake Workman has it all in front of him.

10

The boys defeated Penrith in the Annual Lou Benaud Cup at Bradman Oval in an excellent start to the season and a great experience for all the boys and the parents, having the opportunity to play at Bradman Oval. Our great thanks to John Benaud for his continued outstanding support of the Cup and of our Club in general, including his most generous sponsorship of the Player of the Round Awards.

At time of writing, the Academy has a squad of two teams touring England and Wales for two weeks in the trip of a lifetime for these lads. The tour was the result of some meticulous planning by Academy Coach Paul Calvert and Manager Matt Roughan and some brilliant fundraising by a fundraising team led by Carley Johns which made the trip achievable for all.

Our female player development is also going ahead strongly, winning the Margaret Peden Shield representing the Parramatta DCA - PDCA’s first ever Women’s title. Our Parramatta U14s made semi-finals and U12s performed well, both teams competing in boy’s competitions. Our women’s program is doing well building a pipeline of players for the future.

Congratulations to President Scott Reibelt, Secretary Craig Noble and skipper Mel Halton on the development of our women’s cricket club in Parramatta. We hope that we can continue to grow our quality player base and it will not be too long before we can field a full First Grade side, win a Grade Premiership and assist produce our first women’s international player.

Congratulations PDCA Margaret Peden Shield Winners

Thanks to our hardworking Management Committee of Deputy President Peter West, Secretary Ron Wright, Treasurer Tom Wood and Committee Paul Calvert, Paul Sullivan, Rod Cherry, Paul Copperfield, Brenton Cherry (players representative) and Paul Sullivan (Coaching representative). It was gratifying to be announced as one of the top 4 best administered clubs in Sydney following completion of the now annual Premier Grade Club Assessment Survey.

We thank the Parramatta District Cricket Association for its continued support of our club, of our shared junior development programs for boys and girls and men and women. We thank the retiring President Ray Horder for his 50 years of service to the Association and for his time as President. We thank Executive Officer Eric Myatt for his continuing hard work for the betterment of cricket in our area.

11

One of the most pleasing aspects of the close relationship of our club and our Association is the number of players developed in our district. Ten of our premiership winning Poidevin Gray team are Parramatta juniors. All eleven of our Parramatta Men’s First Grade Semi Final side were Parramatta Juniors. A number of these players have the ambition, the determination and the ability to eventually join in the senior representative ranks, noting in particular Nick Bertus’ elevation to the NSW Development Squad during this winter.

We also congratulate Life Members Greg Davidson and Chris Bennison on their continued success in their fields. Good luck to Davo, already a leading member of the National Umpiring Panel (more international games for you this season Davo!) and to Chris, (fingers crossed for selection to score another Sydney Ashes Test this summer Chris!).

Scott Copperfield with Greg Davidson watching on in the First Grade Semi Final at Sydney University

We wish Sean Abbott a most successful, injury free season ahead. Sean captained an Australian Emerging XI in a quadrangular series pre-season, leading the team to victories against South Africa A and A. On his final in the Australia A game, he was struck on the ankle by a fierce drive, breaking bones in several places and causing him to miss the first half of the season.

We trust Sean will be back to his best this year, that the current Player/Cricket Board deadlock will soon be resolved and Sean can resume his successful First Class and Big Bash career.

A massive vote of thanks to our sponsors, in particular our Major Club Sponsor the Parramatta Leagues Club, our great supporter of Junior Development Jaycar and our superb arrangement with Robbie Walsh and the Royal Oak, whose first season back with us was a major success.

12

In closing, I would like to acknowledge the passing of one of our greatest members, Harold Goodwin late last year. Harold first played Green Shield in 1945-46 and continued his involvement with our club for 7 decades. Harold was a dashing opening bat, a T20 player before there was T20, and a brilliant administrator. I acknowledge a personal debt of gratitude to Harold for his continued encouragement and support to me, and to the club as a whole. Harold was a unique character who will be sadly missed.

Harold Goodwin (centre) with Richie Benaud, Doug Walters and Club Stalwarts Alan and Jill Cramond

Everyone is looking forward immensely to the upcoming season.

A season of great promise and great challenge.

The promise is obvious everywhere in this report. The challenge is to continue to grow our Bleed Blue Parra culture, to keep lifting our standards each year. We must use this season as a powerful step along the way, an important milestone and a platform to achieve top level performance on a consistent basis each year.

Yours in Cricket!

Greg Monaghan

“From the Past”

Parramatta (Central Cumberland) District Cricket Club {By Tom Wood – Club Historian}

In the 1967/68 season Bert and Greg Alderson became the only “Father and Son” combination to share a century partnership for the Parramatta District Cricket Club, when the two left-handers rattled up a second wicket partnership of 139 runs in Third Grade against Northern Districts.

On the subject of Father and Sons, Allen and Adam Turrell are the only such pairing to have captained a Parramatta District Cricket Club grade team in a Semi-Final – Allen led the 2nd grade team to the Premiership in 1991/92 – Adam was at the helm in the 2nd grade Semi-Final of 2014/15.

“Jacko” - as the great Canadian Rock Singer Neil Young once sung: “Comes a Time”.

Even a “Club Marvel” like the ultra-competitive Warrior Daniel Jackson can’t forever battle against the ravishes of time and injury – “Comes a Time” when even the most valiant of competitors must draw the curtain on an illustrious career – and 2016/17 was Daniel’s swansong.

“Jacko” without doubt ranks amongst the very top echelon of Fast Bowlers to ever represent the Parramatta Club – few if any would have ever matched his unbridled passion and love of grabbing a wicket – at the close of his career he stands at the “Top of the Fast Bowler’s Tree”, being the only speedster to have claimed over 500 Wickets in First Grade for the Club - 546 wickets @ 21.12 (B.B. - 8/37), he also snared another 64 wickets @ 24.95 in a brief sojourn with the Balmain Club, making him one of the best performed pacemen in SCA history.

Always a great team mate, Daniel was an uplifting presence in the dressing room geeing his colleagues up for the contest – with plenty of tattooed war paint adorning his body he charged at the opposing batsman like Crazy Horse charged General Custer at their Little Big Horn battle – sharp speed, endless stamina and a will-to-win were the hallmarks of his bowling. Known to “foe & friend” across the Sydney grade scene simply as “Jacko” his simple pleasure at “blasting out” another hapless batsman was a joy to behold – a Peter Pan like character “forever the teenager at heart, even when he was in fact a grizzled Old Warrior” .

His overall statistical record with P.D.C.C. is most impressive in all grades he has captured 671 wickets @ 20.26 and despite not practicing or caring much about his batting he still managed to compile in all grades 2,273 runs @ 12.29 (H.S. – 90) – after witnessing many of these runs I’d conservatively estimate that 75% came from the sweep shot.

In recognition of his services to the Club Daniel Jackson was awarded the honour of Life Membership in 2011.

Daniel Jackson – “The Warrior”

In a flashback to the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s distant past a match played at Parramatta oval on 27th October 1883 makes interesting reading. Parramatta’s opponents were the prestigious and powerful city club Carlton who made the trek out to the then rural west – their star players were the Bannerman brothers, Charles brilliant stroke-maker who is forever remembered for his 165 (retired hurt) in the first ever Test match between Australia and England in 1877, and Alec the long-term Test stonewaller batsman, these famous players were backed by A. Geary, T. Nunn, J.J.C. Callachor and F. Adams all of whom had represented NSW at Inter-colonial level. The Parramatta line-up featured some of the club’s greatest 19th century cricketers – W.A. Brodie (all-rounder), P. Maybury (Fast bowler), Judge E.B. Docker (slow bowler), Nat Neale (wicket-keeper), R. Rutter (batsman) and T. Boon (batsman and Parramatta oval curator). As shown in the attached scoresheet Carlton were comfortable winners on this occasion. Parramatta Carlton W. Thompson 4 A.C. Bannerman c. Duffy b. Maybury 38 R. Rutter 7 C. Bannerman b. The Sydney Morning Herald – Wednesday 29th December 1858 – provides an article on a match in the “Back Domain” (near present day Westmead) – The Albert Club v. Cumberland Club. A portion of the report reads:- “This match of unusual interest took place at Parramatta on Boxing Day, on a new ground in the Domain. Great preparations had been made for the event, and everything passed off as agreeably as the weather would allow. A large concourse of people attended – amongst them a more than usual quantity of the fairer sex; the play on the part of the Parramatta men being very much better than last year, when they contested a match with the Alberts.” This is

20 where Parramatta played prior to Doctor Pringle (Club President) getting permission for the cricket club to build a new oval on the sight of the present day Parramatta Stadium in 1862.

In the tables displayed below are listed the Parramatta batsmen who have scored centuries in First Grade at Old Kings Oval up to the 2016/17 season, and the Parramatta bowlers who have captured Five Wickets in an innings at Old Kings in First Grade: - 1 – Centuries

“Sometimes Cricket is Cruel”- In the 1896/97 season Cumberland’s Second grade team learnt the hard way how tough a game of cricket can be when they encountered a strong Paddington team. “Paddo” batted with gusto to rattle up a challenging total of 237, and then the ‘Men from Parramatta’ ventured out to the crease eager to chase down the target and in the process show the ‘city slickers’ how to bat. Alas, things didn’t go to plan and to their astonishment the brave men in bumble-bee caps were quickly ‘put to the sword’ by the sharp Paddington bowling attack and routed for a mere 44 runs – this included six ducks with only wicket-keeper George Jordan who compiled 21 offering any counter-attack. ‘Smelling blood in the water’ Paddington sent Cumberland back in, the Cumberland batsmen believing the old adage ‘second time lucky’ marched back into the fray with redemption in their hearts, unfortunately their resolve promptly collapsed in the course of the battle and to their disbelief this time the team score only reached a total of 23 runs – and this innings also yielded yet another batch of six ducks. 12 Ducks in one match is a lot for a team to digest.

A Fourth grade match against Sydney University during the 1988/89 season in which the Parramatta team was skippered by the ‘age defying’ John “JA” Aitken – and included first grade veterans Bobby Aitken and John Affleck – proved to be an engrossing contest. The impact of ‘cricket’s chief enemy’ rain meant the match staged at Merrylands oval was restricted a 40 overs affair, coming into the round 10 game the students were cock-a-hoop and undefeated at this stage of the season – Parramatta batted first and reached

8/118 in their allotted overs with Bob Aitken’s whirlwind 34 being the major contribution – University took to the wicket and found things ‘weren’t going to plan’ due to Parramatta’s tight bowling and fielding putting them under pressure, as the innings advanced and the tension built the Students cracked and panic set-in to the extent that no less than six of their batting line-up were runout and Parramatta lowered their colours by the slim margin of 4 runs, Uni being all out for 114 (Bob Aitken 2/41, B. Poots 2/48) – a fine victory to the “two-blues”.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper used to run an article on rising young players from Sydney’s Grade clubs, and attached below is piece from that 1931 series on Rex Pye a Cumberland medium-pacer and the nephew of the club’s outstanding all-rounder of pre-World War 1 Les Pye.

A round 7 match against Paddington in Cumberland’s 1932/33 premiership season illustrates the vagaries uncovered pitches and how they impacted on game results. Sent in to bat on a rain damaged wicket on Day 1 Cumberland was routed for a less than flattering total of 44 runs, when Paddington ‘took to the crease’ things were still ‘juicy’ with the pitch, and under barrage from the excellent bowling of Cumberland’s skipper Marc Bosley who snared 4-9 with left-arm swingers and robust young paceman Lloyd Cadden 2-9, Paddo fought desperately to annex first innings points declaring at 7-46 – hoping to make a few inroads on Cumberland’s second dig whilst the wicket was still a handful. In much improved conditions Cumberland

24 produced a challenging 2nd innings score of 218 – with the dashing young left-hander Ray Rowe delivering a forceful 56, all-rounder and Australian Soccer International Charlie Leabeater smashing 41 and the staunch young opener Jack Fitzpatrick chiming in with a solid 37 – and this total set the stage of a Cumberland outright win. Paddington’s 2nd innings was blown away by the impressive bowling of Cumberland’s opening attack, with Lloyd Cadden the “star of show” grabbing a resounding 5-19 and his Policeman cohort Ray Perry provided strong back-up capturing 3-33 – leaving Paddington lamenting their team score of 84 and the Cumbos celebrating their 132 run outright victory.

The 1951/52 season saw the only instance in the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s history of two brothers capturing the coveted “50 Wickets” wickets in the same season – older sibling and paceman Arthur Howell bagged 61 wickets in Second Grade, and his younger off-spinning brother Norman snared 52 wickets in Third Grade.

It is an interesting exercise to troll back into the Club’s past and randomly select a few matches to provide current players and members with a glimpse into what has gone before:-

o 1983/84 First Grade v. Sutherland at Caringbah Oval – Parramatta enjoyed an overwhelming outright victory over a shell-shocked ‘Shire Team’ – Parramatta started proceedings with a rousing total of 326 that was built on the aggressive batting efforts of Kenny Gentles 93, John Affleck 75, Mark Sargent 53 and former State player Len Richardson 30. When their turn came to bat the ‘Sharks’ had no answer to the Parramatta attack and wickets tumbled quickly to see the local all out for a meagre 31 – left-arm pacemen Steve Moss 6/11 and Matt Bugg 4/22 doing the damage – Sutherland’s second dig fared little better and they collapsed for 80 – this time medium-pacer and future Test Umpire Rodney Tucker was the major wrecker with 5/22 with strong support from right- arm paceman Gary Oakes who snared 4/35 – outright victory by an innings and 215 runs.

o 1947 First Grade v. Manly at – The ‘shoe was on the other foot’ when Cumberland came up against a strong Manly team and they were well and truly cleaned up on rain-damaged wicket. In their first innings Cumberland could only muster 42 with Richie Benaud 16 not out the top-score, Manly then also found the going tough and struggled to 5/61 before declaring (Fred Wright 3/36 and Arthur Howell 2/18). Second time around Cumberland again couldn’t master the conditions nor the Manly bowlers to succumb for a disastrous total of 31 (George Clarke 11) and Manly duly collected outright points after making 0/15 in their 2nd innings.

o 1931/32 First Grade v. Manly at the S.C.G. – This match again saw the Cumberland team achieve a resounding outright win, engineered by the spirited contributions of their three players with Sheffield Shield experience (Charlie Nicholls, Marc Bosley and Len Leabeater). Manly crumbled in their first trip to the crease for 41 – strapping fast bowler Nicholls snatching 7/28 (6 overs) and left- hand swing bowler Bosley snapped up 2/15 – Cumberland then marched out and ‘rattled up’ 3/218 decl. – Len Leabeater providing a polished 110* and R. Evans a fine 66, and in the process they added 166 runs for the 3rd wicket – Manly improved in their second knock making 113 with the combination of Nicholls 5/28 and Bosley 4/48 again causing the “Seasiders” downfall.

o Second Grade 1984/85 v. Sydney at Old Kings Oval – In a very high scoring match played on a superb OKO batting wicket Parramatta clawed their way to an unlikely victory after Sydney posted a commanding total of 6/384 decl. [paceman Steve Stewart claimed 4/66]. Parramatta applied themselves to the huge challenge with great resolution and were able to take match honours after they managed to make 5/385 – the team’s great effort was bankrolled by ‘wonderful under pressure’ batting from the experienced and rugged left-hander Mark A. Ward who produced a belligerent 114 and the promising young opener Mark Crittenden who compiled a determined 109 – they featured in a partnership of 143.

25

o Fourth Grade 1973/74 v. University of NSW at Old Kings Oval- Cumberland dominated a low scoring match and recorded a notable outright win that was principally due to the devastating bowling of tenacious fast-medium bowler Mick Haire and the sturdy left-arm paceman Tony Tully. UNSW crashed for just 50 in their first dig (Tully 6/21 & Haire 3/28), Cumberland then replied with 6/54 decl. (Chris Gardoll 24) and sent the Students back to the crease where they were promptly demolished for meagre total of 37 (Haire 5/19 & Tully 5/16) – Cumberland knocked off the 35 runs needed for the outright win with the loss of two wickets.

o Third Grade 1933/34 v. Paddington at Oval – In a high scoring match for a 3rd grade game of that era, Cumberland after registering a massive score week 1 had to fight ‘tooth and nail’ on week 2 to withstand a relentless Paddington and secure a hard fought draw. Cumberland 8/380 decl. (Roy Baxter stole the show with a stroke-filled 154 and was well supported by Ed Denneen 47, Harry McNamara 40 and Jack Tenie 36) looked to have achieved a winning total, but alas the Paddo boys thought otherwise and at stumps on day 2 were 9/355 (Bernie Jackson 3/51 & Ron Lewis 3/47).

The historical photo below is a rare picture of the Sheffield Shield team in 1899, of interest to Parramatta cricketers is that the team includes two of the club’s greatest ever players – batsman Barclay “Wally” Farquhar [3rd from left in the backrow] and all-rounder Les Pye [last on the right in the middle row wearing his ‘bumble-bee’ club ] – other players of note were the legendary [backrow 3rd from the right] and Harry Donnan [1st in the middle row] who’s brother Dave played for Parramatta.

2016/17 OBITUARIES

The Committee and Members of the Parramatta District Cricket Club extend their sincere condolences to the relatives of the following:- Ray Shipton [By Tom Wood – Club Historian]

In the Daily Telegraph on Saturday 22nd October notice was given of the passing of another “Old Cumbo”.

Ray Shipton; was a right-arm fast-medium opening bowler of no mean ability – a whole-hearted trier who was able to swing the new ball a great deal – he was also a handy batsman and an active fieldsman, who played with Central Cumberland from 1950/51 to 1955/56 mainly in 3rd & 4th grade with a sprinkling of 2nd grade appearances. He was also a Wine connoisseur and travelled throughout Australia judging Wine competitions.

During his career with Cumberland in all grades he scored 1,174 runs @ 12.90 (H.S. – 84) and captured 161 wickets @ 17.00 (B.B. – 9/52). He was particularly successful in 4th grade snaring 111 wickets @ 12.85 – highlighted by a “golden summer” in 1952/53 when he harvested an impressive 54 wickets @ 10.10 [including hauls of 9/52 v. Balmain, 7/68 v. Gordon, 6/21 v. Waverley, 6/31 v. N.Ds, and 5/10 v. University). 1951/52 was also a productive season for Ray as well yielding him 32 wickets @ 15.21 – the highlights being 5/55 & 7/47 v. Petersham, and a great all-round effort v. Manly 5/49 & 84 runs with the bat. Harold Goodwin (By Tom Wood – Club Historian)

Sadly, on Tuesday the 29th November, 2016 the Parramatta District Cricket Club lost another of its iconic figures with the passing of Harold Goodwin. Harold gave “glowing service” to the club over a very extensive period of time both “On and Off” the field – in the lengthy annals of the Parramatta club’s history he is another club devotee whose investment of time and energy has played a vital role in keeping the “Two – Blues” afloat after 173 years and still going strong in the 21st century – forthright of opinion and with a “roll the sleeves up” and “get on with it” approach Harold was able balance a number of balls whilst contributing to the clubs operations, this was best typified during the 1960s when in a hive of industry he managed a burgeoning Executive Business career with his playing commitments whilst at the same time undertaking the key administrative cricket role of Club Secretary.

Harold was a schoolboy contemporary of Richie Benaud and Wilf Ewens at Parramatta High School (1942/43 – 1946/47), and he first played for Central Cumberland in A.W. Green Shield in the 1945/46 season, and next made a handful of appearances in the Poidevin-Gray Shield team in 1947 -49 – whilst still playing for Wentworthville in the P.D.C.A.

After a fruitful career in the P.D.C.A. “A” grade competition he decided, at the relative mature age of 24 years, to try his hand with Central Cumberland and commenced, what was to be long and valuable association with the club, in 4th grade in the 1954/55 season.

A batting swashbuckler Harold “HG” Goodwin despite his slight stature “packed a punch” – possessing a strong inclination to attack from the first ball, the right-handed opener bludgeoned the new ball bowlers with flashing pulls and cuts his specialty – throughout his career he developed a penchant for flat batting the first ball of an innings for six. He backed his batting prowess with excellent slips fielding.

From 1955/56 to 1958/59 Harold played “snakes & ladders” between 2nd and 1st grade – scoring heavily in 2nd grade (including 2 centuries 178 & 135) but not able to reproduce this form when promoted to the top grade. But after good early season

27 form in the 2nds in 1958/59 he was finally able to cement his position a 1st eleven opener via some aggressive batting and outstanding slips catching – closing out the decade in a role he was to continue to occupy until the 1966/67 season.

Harold’s “golden days” were the first six years of the 1960s – when he was true to his motto of “attack being the best form of defence” providing the “Combo’s” with many an explosive start - winning himself a reputation in 1st grade circles as a dangerous opponent. His best season was 1963/64 when he pillaged 579 runs @ 38.60. At various stages in the 1960s “H.G.” captained the 1st grade team.

A dyed-in-the-wool Parramatta man Harold was a Life Member and had served the club in all Executive Administration roles – after a 16 year hiatus during which he pursued a successful business career, he returned to the club as a long-term A.W. Green Shield Coach / Manager (1993 – 2002) and followed this up as Poidevin-Gray Shield Manager (2005 – 2009) – in these roles he proved a fine mentor to the youngsters in his charge. In 2015 Harold Goodwin was also chosen in the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s “Team of the 1960s”. The undoubted highlight of Harold’s Administration career occurred under his Presidency in the 1973/74 season – when CCDCC won its second Club Championship after winning the Premierships in 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade, and 1st grade taking out the subsidiary NSWCA’s Encouragement Award. A brief precis of his main Administration activities with the Club reads:-  Secretary – 1958/59 – 1964/65  President – 1972/73 – 1973/74 and again 1976/77 – 1977/78  Deputy President – 2002/03 – 2006/07 In recent years Harold still maintained a keen interest in the club, popping up to view matches at Old Kings Oval, and operating as an “Elder Statesman”.

Vale Harold Goodwin – you left a wonderful legacy of service with the Parramatta District Cricket Club.

Richard “Rick” Dwyer [By Tom Wood – Club Historian]

Sadly yet another ex-Cumberland player Rick Dwyer passed away in January 2017, Rick was an industrious wicket-keeper and at times turned in some handy performances with the willow in hand – he was a likable character who was a keen and enthusiastic cricketer and was described in Annual reports as improving with the gloves season by season. Rick was the younger sibling of former Club playing and administration stalwart Johnny Dwyer, and his mother also spent a number of seasons as the Club’s Third grade scorer – he “turned out” in the Bumble- Bee cap between seasons 1960/61 and 1965/66 – featuring chiefly in Cumberland’s City and Suburban eleven, with a smidgeon of 4th grade appearances over the years. The definite performance highpoints of his Cumbo playing days were both achieved in City and Suburban games –  1963/64 – together with club legend John “JA” Aitken he struck up a First Wicket Partnership of 52 runs against P-M.H.  1964/65 – he combined with Charlie Watson to compile a 5th wicket stand of 57 runs against Waverley. Rick’s career statistics were (unfortunately no records were kept of City & Suburban catches or stumpings):- Grade Runs Highest Score Average 4th Grade 61 17 5.54 City & Suburban 438 32* 11.52 Total 499 32* 10.18

Reg Breusch – Obituary 2017 [By Tom Wood – Club Historian]

Late June 2017, saw the passing away of yet another former Central Cumberland cricketer Reg Breusch.

Reg followed a long line of players who turned out for Cumberland whilst still active students at The Kings School Parramatta, during school breaks he ‘donned the bumble-bee’ over a three season period between 1954/55 and 1956/57 – the talented teenager was an all-rounder of great potential and played in both the Cumberland Poidevin- Gray Shield and First grade teams in each of his seasons with Cumberland. Kings School contemporaries also appearing with the club at this time were Keith Breusch (brother) and Jon Erby.

Described ‘in dispatches’ as a very fine cricketer ‘in the making’ – a right-handed batsman referred to as a beautiful natural stroke-maker and skillful slow-medium off-spinner – he performed promisingly in a Cumberland 1st grade team that boasted Richie Benaud, Jack Treanor, Keith Wall, Wilf Ewens and Bert Alderson.

In the Poidevin-Gray Shield his record stood at 269 runs @ 20.69 (H.S. – 49 v. Bankstown) and 29 wickets @ 17.86 (B.B. – 5/70 v. Petersham, 4/71 v. University and 6/47 v. Bankstown). Reg made a solitary appearance in 2nd grade in 1954/55 scoring 22 runs and capturing 3/34.

The 1955/56 1st grade Annual Report featured the following comments on Reg Breusch penned by skipper Bert Alderson:

“Reg was also selected directly from his school side, and performed really well. He captured 10 wickets at a cost of 16.80 per wicket, his best performance being 5 for 27 against Western Suburbs. Reg is also a promising batsman, and with his fine fielding, he should have many good performances” in 1st grade ahead of him.”

His total 1st grade statistics were 227 runs @ 16.21 (H.S. – 48 v. North Sydney) and 27 wickets @ 20.18 (B.B. – 5/27 v. Wests, 6/25 v. Northern Districts).

Vale Reg Breusch.

Obituary – Trevor Wholohan [By T. Wood – Club Historian] Former Central Cumberland 1st grade batsman Trevor Wholohan passed away on Saturday 15th July 2017. Trevor Wholohan the “Penrith Panther” was a well-known cricketing identity across the Sydney cricket community, he was in his own right, quite a personality in the old fashioned ‘Aussie bloke’ style and never reticent to proffer his opinion passionately on all matters cricket related. The Penrith district was his domain where he was a widely recognized resident through his butchering business interests and his long-term association with local cricket – he played a significant role in Penrith becoming a grade club and served that club as an official for many years. In his playing days Trevor was a determined and technically correct batsman who turned out for Central Cumberland, firstly in A.W. Green Shield in 1953/54/55 and then in the grade ranks from 1954/55 through to 1962/63. He captained the club’s Poidevin-Gray Shield team in 1957/58, made his 1st grade debut in 1957/58 and then hovered between 1st and 2nd grade until his final season with the club in 1962/63 – a season in which he played in the 1st grade Semi-Final contributing a gritty 34 in the first innings on a wet unpredictable Merrylands oval wicket. Trevor’s Cumberland playing statistics were:- Grade Runs H.S. Average Wickets Average A.W. Green 176 64* 29.33 2 14.00 Poidevin-Gray 239 67* 21.72 10 15.30 4th grade 46 26* 7.66 - - 3rd grade 369 78 28.38 3 12.33 2nd grade 1,244 95 23.03 - - 1st grade 414 56* 17.25 - - Total 2,488 95 21.82 15 14.53

Trevor was a Life Member (NSWCA), former Board Director NSWCA, former Board Director ACB, former Vice President NSWCA, NSWCA and SCA Delegate for over 30 years.

Vale Trevor Wholohan

The club also provide funding toward the growth of female participation not just in the Sydney Grade competition but in the Parramatta District Cricket Association where this season teams were entered in the junior divisions.

We trust the grant will be ongoing, which allows the club to participate in the development of cricket administration and volunteer education schemes as well as the coaching and male and female development programs.

SYDNEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION

Our thanks to the Management of the Association which give many hours attending numerous meetings throughout the season noting that all members are volunteers.

We appreciate your commitment and note there are a number of issues during the season that arise which have to be resolved to ensure that the Association provide the highest standard of Premier Grade Cricket.

CRICKET NEW SOUTH WALES UMPIRES AND SCORERS ASSOCIATION

We wish to place on record and acknowledge the support given by the Umpires.

It is encouraging to find there are a number of former players taking up umpiring, this can only lead to ensure we aim to have the highest standard available for not only NSW Cricket but also representative Cricket.

To Darren and his Staff we extend our thanks and to encourage clubs to promote the Umpires Fraternity to former players that would qualify.

PARRAMATTA DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION

Our relationship with the PDCA is enhanced by the continued support given by President Ray Horder and Chief Executive Officer Eric Myatt.

The Junior Association has for many years provided a pathway to not only our Academy but also directly to the grade scene.

We have for many years stated the PDCA is the most active and largest Junior Association in Australia, this has resulted in the significant number of Parramatta Juniors playing grade for Parramatta, thus providing players for higher levels, a challenge that all clubs are expected to achieve.

PUBLICITY

The Club appreciates the continued support from the Local Press.

We are aware from time to time many cricket stories and photographs do not make the weekly editions, due to the pressure Editors are faced with during these times.

However we look forward to the “Journo’s” and Photographers visiting our home venues as and when time allow them to attend.

First Grade Report

The Parramatta First grade side had a highly successful season and was the best from a first grade perspective since 1993. It started with another well organised pre-season by Coaches Paul Sullivan and Jason Coleman which had everyone fit and firing for the season.

The 2016/2017 season started for Parra with a trip to Howell oval to take on a full strength Penrith side. Parra were soundly beaten with Ben Abbotts 60 the only highlight.

Round 2 saw another Western Sydney showdown with Hawkesbury at Old Kings. After a poor bowling/ fielding performance Parra were set 290 to win. In a brilliant run chase, which at one stage Parra needing 85 from 11 overs, we ended up winning by 6 wickets with 10 balls remaining. Nick Bertus top scored with 116 not out but was helped by Will Affleck 59 Cherry 36 Turrell 26 and Critto 20 not out off 9 balls.

Round 3 saw the start of the Two day games and we started our campaign against Western Suburbs. After a mixed bowling performance Parra bowled West out for 283. Scott Copperfield was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 81 while Brad 3 for 73 and Tevin who was on debut with figures of 2 for 54 chipped in. Again the reply from Parra was quality as we chased down the target with ease only losing the one wicket. Parra finished 5 for 422 off only 86 overs. Bertus top scored with 215 but was helped by Will Affleck 121. They shared a record 2nd wicket partnership of 330.

Round 4 and 5 were disappointing for Parra with two losses against Northern Districts and North Sydney respectively. Highlight in round 3 was Scott taking 4 for 67. Highlights in round 4 was Ben Martin 4 for 81, Nick Bertus 138, Will Affleck 70 and Tim Affleck 61.

Round 6 saw us take on Campbelltown at Old Kings which was a must win game for the two blues if we wanted to make the top 6. It started well with a good bowling performance once again led by Copperfield with 3 wickets but there was help from Marto, Mo Emran and who all took 2 wickets each to bowl the Ghost out for 206. In reply run chase was led by Vice-captain Brenton Cherry 130 and Sean Abbott 54. Tim Ward on debut chipped in with a fine 62 not out. A good win but we now had to go back to back.

Our next game was a big match up against Saint George at . And in our best performance of the year we clearly out played and dominated one of the best clubs in Sydney. Parra put 306 on the board with Bertus 79 and Trent 71 the main scorers in what was a good team batting performance. But what happened in the 10 overs before stumps was truly unbelievable. In 10 overs we had left saints 5 for 11 with Marto having 4 of the 5. This set us up to bowl saints out for 85. Marto finished with unbelievable figures of 6 for 22. Brad supported him well with 3 wickets. But the Two blues weren’t done there, after sending Saint George in again it seemed like the game was petering out with Saints 2 for 134 with only 25 overs left. Then Brad struck with 2 balls in a row and from then on it was a route. We went straight through their middle and lower order to bowl them out for 184. Marto finished with match figures of 10 for 71 and was supported by Brad who had 5 wickets for the match and Mo who had 4. This game showed we had what it took to play finals and we were full of confidence.

Round 8 saw us take on another strong club in Manly at Merrylands. After manly made 6 for 227 with Copperfield the best of the bowlers with 3 wickets, it was time for the Ben Abbott show. He plundered the Manly bowlers to all parts and all houses and cars were in the firing line has he hit 6 sixes in his 18 ball half century. The game was over in the first 6 overs and Parra cruised to a huge win before the Christmas break. Cherry 54, Will 45 and Turrell 58 all set up the easy win.

After a good break round 9 saw us take on a high flying Gordon team at Chatswood. After being set 218 the Parramatta top order made a mess of the chase and only Trent got going who made a brilliant 64.

59

After the injury to Brad Taylor it saw the team take a different approach with 2 quicks and 2 spinners with Owen Simonson making his debut. Our next challenge was a highly fancied Randwick team and we knew it would be tough. But after bowling first and having Randwick 6 for 80 at lunch we were well on top. Another great performance from Ben Martin 4 for 22 had Randwick all out for 128. After a good start from our openers we chased down the target only 3 down and decided to go for the throat and sent them back in. Again our bowlers came to the party and we managed to bowl Randy Petes out again for 192. All bowlers chipped in with Copperfield the best with 3 for 39. Parra required 189 off 31 overs for another outright win, but this is where things got a bit dicey. After a dramatic collapse we faced the prospect of losing outright as we had 1 wicket left with Bert and number 11 Mo at the crease. Thankfully Mo “the ice man” calmly blocked it out and we survived.

Round 11 saw us take on Sutherland at Old kings oval. It was a disappointing draw with the highlights being Marto 4 for 81, Will 89, Ben Abbott 56 and Nick Bertus 54.

Round 12 saw us travel to Sydney Uni for our toughest game of the year against the students. It was another setback as we were soundly beaten. Martos 6 for 89 the only positive.

Round 13 was at Merrylands which saw Blacktown bat first making 204 with Sean Abbott the best of the bowlers taking 3 wickets. Ben came out firing again and set up a Duck worth Lewis bonus point win. He was very well supported by veteran, Brenton Cherry 56 and Will Affleck 31. This was a big win with the bonus point and we were back in the hunt for the finals.

After a washout in round 14 Parra were in 5th spot with a win against Mosman sealing a finals spot for the first time in 25 years. It didn’t start well with both openers out early but Parra consolidated to a decent position. With 10 overs left the game and our season was evenly poised but enter Adam Turrell who played innings of the year for himself and smashed 55 off 25 balls including 5 sixers. We took this momentum into the field and made short work of Mosman rolling them for 101. This gave us a bonus point win and we had achieved our goal of playing finals, finishing in 4th. We drew Bankstown in the Quarters and after a week of heavy rain the game was washed out and with us finishing 4th we advanced to the semi-finals against minor premiers Sydney Uni.

It was Semi Final time and all the boys were exciting and confident with our chances. But frustratingly we were denied a proper crack at 2days due to a disgraceful outfield which only saw us play 20 overs on day 1. With Uni 0 for 61 we were up against it but with some fire in the belly the two blues came out fired up and took 4 for 9 in the first half hour and had the students rocking. On an extremely flat pitch the efforts from all bowlers especially Marto 3 wickets and then one of the performances of the year Scott Copperfield who took 5 for 66 we bowled Uni out for 295. This left Parra 25 overs to get the score. We knew we were up against it but we defiantly put on a show for all the people watching hitting 15 sixers in our 181 all out. It was a terrific effort and you never know what could of happened if we had a full 2 days.

T20 Competition

Parramatta started the T20 comp with two massive win at Old Kings against Western Suburbs and a highly rated ACT team. The teams fielding was a stand out on this day with 7 run outs between the two games. This set up our campaign and our end goal of winning it all.

We then travelled to Bensons Lane to take on Hawkesbury where Parra batted first but our 144 wasn’t enough as the Hawkes chased it down with ease. A solid win against Campbelltown saw us through to the quarterfinals.

After losing the toss Bankstown set us a good target of 155, what happened next was one of the greatest innings seen at Old Kings. Sean Abbott hit the ball to all parts scoring 91 not out off 55 balls to lead us to a semi-final at the SCG against Northern District.

60

Turning up to the SCG was a great thrill not just for the players but the whole club. The day didn’t go to plan for the Two Blues but it was a great honour and experience for everyone involved. Northern District made 4 for 172 and after a few continuous decisions against us we were bowled out for 131.

This season for the First grade squad was one no one will forget, but it’s only the start for this group of players. It was a thrill to be able to captain you boys this year and my job was made very easy with the commitment and passion showed. I’d like to thank Brenton Cherry who was vice captain, also Jason Coleman, Paul Sullivan, Russell Arnold, Allen Turrell, Ron Wright, Tom Wood, Greg Monaghan, Christine Bennison and Rod Cherry who have all played a huge part in the team’s success and your efforts are much appreciated by myself and the whole team.

Player Profiles

Brenton Cherry- Chez had another solid year at the top of the order although would admit he didn’t score the runs he would of liked to. Always a great team mate and his passion is second to none. Loved having him as vice-captain and he played a big part in the sides success.

Will Affleck- Another great season for Will which once again saw him as one of the best openers in the comp. He also played a great role batting in the middle order in our one dayers. I’m sure there’s even more runs for you next year Wilbar.

Trent Crittenden- Trent in patches this year showed the talent we all know he has. He will admit he threw some innings away but with taking more responsibility at batting at 4 he’s just around the corner of a huge season. One of our best fielders all year and always a great bloke to have in the team.

Tim Ward- Wardy had a break out season after dominating 2nd grade he came up to 1st grade and had success straight away scoring 62 not out on debut. With a bright future ahead it will be great watching his progression to one of the best top order bats in our club. Another great fielder and even rolled the arm over!

Ben Abbott- Ben’s first year in the top grade was very successful and on numerous occasions showed off his immense talent without kicking on to a big score. He’s the type of player that other teams are very worried about and I look forward to watching Ben dismantle attacks even more next season. Another great bloke to play alongside with and fielded the house down all season.

Adam Turrell- Tuz had probably in my mind he’s best season for a while and played a big part in the team playing finals. He bats in a tough position but with he’s shot making, clever left arm spin and good cricket knowledge in the field he’s a integral member of the side. A great team mate and good clubman.

Owen Simonson- Owen along with Wardy had a break out season forcing his way into the team through weight of wickets. He never looked out of his depth in 1st grade and took some big wickets at important times. He also has talent with the bat which I can see him being a good all-rounder for Parra for many years to come.

Mo Emran- Mo Buckets had a great first season for Parra and was easily our pick up of the year. He has a bag full of tricks and if he had a bit of luck he would have taken a lot more wickets. We all loved having Mo around the team and was crucial in our success especially in the T20s where he was a stand out. Also he was not dismissed all season in 1st grade and saved us on a few occasions with the bat.

Scott Copperfield- By far Scott’s best season, he not just got through the whole season but bowled through pain at high quality. He definitely has the potential to play at the higher level and with more performances like this season he surely will. The big thing for Scott will be to be able to back it up next season.

61

Ben Martin- Marto the other half of the best opening attack in the comp. But what a year Marto had, and getting picked in the SCA team of the year is a great reward for all the effort he put in. A great clubman and always gives everything in the field along with his bowling, well done mate.

Sean Abbott- Sab only managed to play a handful of games but when he did he added a lot with bat, ball and also with all his experience. Gave us one of the highlights of the season with his 91 not out in the T20 semi. Hopefully Sean keeps performing at the higher level and pushes for even higher honours.

Brad Taylor- Another frustrating year injury wise for BT as he has shown he has the skills to be one of the best fast bowlers in the comp. A big pre-season is in order for BT and hopefully we will see him dominating 1st grade.

Tim Affleck- Timmy started the year with a bit of bad luck with the bat but his off spin came along way and played a huge part in getting us to the T20 finals. We all know Tim’s quality with the bat and will be great to see him in full flight next season.

Tevin Liyanage- Tev made his debut in round 3 this season and performed straight away. Hope to see him back next season and putting pressure on the other spinners at the club.

Daniel Jackson- Jacko started the year in 1st grade and I know all the boys loved having him around for those games. Injury was the only thing stopping Jack from adding to his amazing achievements in 1st grade. A lot of the success the team had this year is down to the way he taught us how to play cricket. All the best Jack and I know everyone in the club hopes your back.

Luke Dempsey- The big ticket had a mixed season in the 1st grade team and was unlucky not to play more games. But when he was in the side he was great to have around and lifted the boys with his banter and enthusiasm. Great clubman and I know next season he will be playing a lot more 1st Grade.

Chris White- Unfortunately for Bazza he only managed to play 2 Games in 1st grade this season due to injury. He definitely has the skills so succeed in 1st grade and coming off a big pre-season I can see him back to his best next season.

Second Grade Report Final Position: 9th A mixed year for us this year, plenty of highlights but also some disappointing results. The main point is all the boys had fun and we had a chance to blood a fair few new players having lost a few experienced players. Some of the new players that were permanent fixtures this year included Taj, Ameesh, Jacob, Abhishek and Owen.

The season started off exactly how we wanted it to as we put the cleaners through a tough opposition in Penrith picking up a bonus point in the process (Taj 40, A Rizwan 2/18 and O Simonsen 2/12). After this great start however we lost three on the trot that put us straight on the back foot and chasing our tails. We had been beaten by the likes of Hawkesbury, Western Suburbs and Northern Districts. Throughout these games there were some good performances however from Mo Emran (6/55 against Wests) and George Joseph (87* against Wests).

After these disappointments we went on to win two on the trot beating North Sydney (Tim Ward 203*) and also Campbelltown-Camden (O Simonsen 6/50, T Crittenden 78* and A Turrell 72*). These games created belief amongst the playing group and we started to realize we could give the competition a real shake.

The next match we came up against a strong St George team that tested our change in team and inevitably we came up with another loss. I might add however the pitch we were dealt with on the first day having lost the toss was unforgiveable. The pitch turned the game into a bit of a joke with 17 wickets being lost on the first day including myself being hit in the shoulder off a length ball! Safe to say was not happy!!! However the second week we were dealt with a belter and were unlucky throughout the day apart from an outstanding one man show by none other than “show time” himself Benjamin Abbott who scored a freakish 109 which included 8 sixes. This was not enough as we were outrighted playing some positive cricket.

We went win loss win loss for the next four games which put us within distance of reaching the top 6! As the season went on it was obvious we had a massive opportunity to play finals cricket. It came down to the last week where we were in the top 6 and had to play Mosman to cement our spot. However it was not to be the case as we were completely outplayed by a side that was clearly stacked with some quality grade cricketers.

77

Some great performances however throughout the last 6 to 7 rounds included Abhishek ( 44 against Randy Petes), Evan ( 72* against Sutherland), Taj (50 against Sydney Uni), Brad Taylor ( 3/21 against Blacktown) and Jacob Workman( 3/23 against Blacktown).

As is the case with grade cricket it is about being able to react to constant changes that take place from game to game. We never really settled on a permanent team which caused an inconsistency from week to week and ultimately lead to our down fall. Going forward into next year it will be about how we can stay tight as a playing group and work out ways in which we can gel as a team week to week.

We are a club on the rise, it is our choice where we go! Our aim is to be the best club in Sydney and we are taking strides towards this! No excuses, just effort!!!

Player Profiles ( players who played 7 or more games)

Tim Affleck – having joined the team in round 7, Tim instantly became a key part to our team. Although disappointed to be playing second grade Tim made sure he had his presence felt out on the field and let his cricket do the talking. Becoming our number 3 batsmen and always reliable off spinner Tim played key parts on and off the field. Having been successful at first grade in previous seasons and this year being a weapon in the T20’s it won’t be long until we see him back in first grade where he belongs. Well done Tim!

Taj Brar- Taj cemented his spot at the top of the order and played some very key innings throughout the year. Taj due to commitments had to miss a game that consequently caused him to play a few games of threes coming back into the team as the season progressed. Instantly he was back at it scoring 48 and 50 in consecutive digs. Taj is starting to really develop into a solid opening bat with a solid technique that allows him to bat for long periods. This next season is key to Taj paving a way into first grade is to convert these 50’s into big 100’s, congratulations on a good season!

Yusof Brown – Sof has been a big part of our second grade team for numerous seasons. Although Yusof did not have the results that he would of liked he responded well in third grade which just demonstrates Yusof’s mentality as a team player. The next six months Yusof will be playing cricket

78

in the UK, which will be a great chance for him to clear his head before coming back to Australia fresh and raring to go!!! Keep working hard Sof it’s a matter of time and you’ll gain that confidence again!

Shane Cassel- Caso adds every bit of the word professionalism to our team. He was a stalwart for us this year after unfortunately having a setback injuring himself at training. We all know what Shane can do and I believe this year he started to get back to his best. I know Shane, if only I could catch you would have taken the most wickets for the club. I owe you a few cold ones. It’s a matter of time until Shane is playing first grade, I look forward to seeing him make his way back in and really dominate it!

George Joseph- my sidekick, my right hand man and my training kit holder. George really stepped out of his shell this year and became a great asset to our team on and off the field. George has now played a few seasons in two’s and is really starting to show his worth. George had the chance to play a few games in the top grade and from all reports didn’t look out of place. The thing that impressed me the most about George is the way in which he goes about his cricket, he is never willing to throw it away and works hard in everything he does. Keep building George and the rewards will come!!!

Ameesh Kaul- Ameesh came into the team in round 5 against North Sydney and played a pivotal role in the opening stand with Tim Ward in which he scored a classy 50. Having taken his opportunity Ameesh was given the keys to the opening position for the remainder of the year. Although his results were up and down throughout, I truly believe he can be a main stay at the top of the order for us in the coming years. At times Ameesh had the unfortunate job having to bat on some pretty ordinary pitches, which did not help! Look forward to seeing what this next season can bring for Ameesh and hopefully you take your opportunities with both hands!

Tevin Liyanage- Tev played the first 7 games for us and played the remainder in fourth grade with his great mate Kevin. Tev made his first grade debut in the first part of the season which was great to see and a big achievement for his consistent results over the last few seasons. Tev went through a period where he probably lost a bit of love for the game and that was the main reason for his defection to fourth grade. I am sure Tev can

79

come back stronger than ever this year and really push to be back in the top grades.

Evan Pitt- Pitt was a permanent fixture this year in second grade and only played one game in third grade, in which he scored 155. Safe to say he was ready to play second grade!! Evan’s batting progressed throughout the year and really showed glimpses of the player he will become. I believe a few technical tweaks throughout the pre-season will pave the way for him to have a massive 2017/2018!! Well done Pitt!

Owen Simonsen- what a roller coaster of a year! Having been thoroughly disappointed on missing out on 19s Owen bounced back in the best way possible! Since this turning point Owen has gone on a run of some proportions! He has gone from just being a young inexperienced bowler at the start of the season to taking two 5 fors on the trot to force his way into ones as a stable part of their team. I am very proud of you mate you worked hard throughout the disappointment and came out the other side like a true champion! Look forward to seeing you progress next year and seeing you cement your first grade spot!

Jacob Workman – The pup of the group, well let’s just say the only thing young about this bloke is his age. Jacob demonstrated why there is hype around him, he did not at any stage look out of his depth in second grade even though he is only 16. A standout for me was his spells against Sutherland that really showed where he was is at. Throughout a tough day he did not take a backward step and continued steaming in! The future is very bright for you Jacob and keep taking your opportunities!!!

A special mention must also go to the rest of the players who contributed to the team throughout the year, great to see a great attitude regardless of the situations!!

THIRD GRADE REPORT Season 2016/17

Final Position: 13th

Season 2016/17 saw a very young and enthusiastic Parramatta side take the field to represent our great club in the 3rd Grade competition. This season we saw a total of 29 players. The key factors for this high amount was due to injuries, poor form, good form, music festivals, overseas holidays and player pathway development, a staggering amount compared to last season’s 20. The positive to this was being able to see the development of many young players establish themselves at 3rd Grade level, and I’m 100% convinced they will play higher levels of cricket for Parramatta in coming years.

Out of those 29 players, 5 made their grade debuts, and 13 stepped onto the field for 3rd Grade for the first time at Parramatta District Cricket Club. The results as followed really do reflect the season we had; 15 matches, 6 wins, 6 losses and 3 draws. Inconsistencies in the way we played throughout the season played a big part in us not making the top 6 as hoped, which came down to an inexperienced side, mainly decision-making while batting which will be corrected with more games under their belt. When we were good, we were very good and when we lost, we fought right till the end. A mixture of fear of losing from opposition captains and bad weather contributed to the three draws we had.

Our season opener saw us up against a strong Penrith team, which unfortunately didn’t go our way but we displayed a good fight back, making us more determined to win our next game. In a nail-bitter against Hawkesbury in Round 2, we were able to get over the line, securing victory 9-down on the last ball. This was followed by another close game against Wests, seeing us fall 11 runs short of victory, chasing 331 on the back of Evan Pitt’s 155*.

A draw Round 4 against competition winners ND’s was an encouraging result looking back. Their decision to bat on in week 2 for another hour, followed by a defensive field setting while they were in the field displayed their fear of losing. However, our standard of cricket dropped considerably in the first innings against North Sydney where we were totally outplayed. Our second innings with the bat is the level of cricket we should have displayed on day one. Round 6 saw us back to our best with a convincing win over Campbelltown at Merrylands.

Round 7 to 8 took us to the Christmas break with high spirits following a draw against St George where we were unable to chase down a big total despite our best efforts, and a win against Manly in a rain-reduced 40 over nail-biter at Old Kings Oval.

Round 9, the first game after a well-deserved Christmas break saw us lose a game against Gordon that we should have won convincingly. The less said the better. We were back to our best in Round 10 against Randwick-Petersham, winning before lunch with a bonus point and consequently rewarding ourselves as a team by spending the rest of the afternoon at Coogee Beach.

Rounds 11 to 13 was where we needed to step-up as a side in the push for semi-final cricket, particularly after the momentum gained from our domination against Randwick we were hopeful. Unfortunately, we were very poor in all aspects and lost against a weak Sutherland team. Round 12 we were totally outplayed by a very strong and experienced Sydney Uni team

91

who were the best side we played all season. Following the up and down trend of our season, we bounced back to our best and skittled Blacktown for a mere 83, again winning with a bonus-point.

Round 14 we were up against an Eastern Suburbs team chasing top 6 contention and although we were no chance of mathematically making it, we were adamant on finishing the season on a high with two wins. Due to constant drizzle week 1 and a juiced up Merrylands wicket, we were bowled for 126. Easts were 5/45 overnight. Unfortunately, this was our third draw as there was no play week 2 anywhere in Sydney due to constant rain. The one that got away.

The final round of the season saw us up against eventual Grand-Finalists Mosman away at the picturesque Balmoral Oval. A disciplined bowling effort backed up by a smart batting run chase gave us a well-deserved victory and a nice way to finish what was a very enjoyable season.

As captain and coach, it was a very encouraging and successful season with a number of good, young players establishing themselves at this level. Although very disappointed that we did not feature in finals cricket, those inconsistencies, narrow loses and three draws did not help our cause.

It was also great to see a number of young players in their first year of grade cricket establish themselves at this level and see players of previous seasons get promoted to Second Grade and perform consistently.

I would like to thank all the players for their effort on match day, at training, as well as their support and respect they showed me as captain on and off the field.

It was a pleasure to captain such a young, enthusiastic, hard-working group of players who all have a big future in the game.

Thanks also to the club for giving me the opportunity to captain the side.

Special thank you to the following people:  Our devoted scorers Lisa Bellam and Graeme King  Brad and all the Merrylands Oval Ground Staff for providing us with Lower Grade Ground of the year, two years running (great work Brad)

Thanks for all your effort lads; I thoroughly enjoyed your company and playing alongside a great bunch of blokes. I hope to see you all back next season and I have no doubt that with the experience gained, both positive through wins and negative through losses, and the talent shown, we will be in a good position and we MUST make the top 6 next season.

PLAYERS

Jason Coleman – 14 matches (89 runs, 22 wickets, 6 catches) Highlights: 34 vs Wests, 5/21 vs Eastern Suburbs, 3/17 Randwick, 3/37 vs Campbelltown

JC led from the front as skipper both on and off the field. He was our best bowler all year as always. Although he is getting older and slower, he has not lost his competitiveness and knack of taking wickets, and has been able to instil this attitude into all of us. The team always seemed to lift another 10% whenever he had the ball in his hand. JC will be disappointed with his batting stats, but I’m sure he’ll bounce back with more runs next year. (Written by Taylor Charles)

Liam O’Farrell – 14 matches (149 runs, 16 catches) Highlights: 36* vs Mosman, 25 vs Eastern Suburbs 20 vs Penrith

New at the club this season, Liam was one of the players that made his grade cricket debut and played the whole season in 3rd grade. His easy-going personality allowed him to fit in so well with the club from day one. While his stats this year with the bat may not entirely reflect his potential and ability, Liam is a stylish, no-fuss player who showed his batting skills with a match-winning 36* Round 15. His fine gloveman ship was on display throughout the whole season, taking 16 catches and 2 stumping’s with his mistake-free keeping setting the benchmark in the field.

Liam Lofts – 12 matches (101 runs, 13 wickets, 1 catches) Highlights: 4/53 vs Campbelltown, 2/8 vs Blacktown, 2/10 vs Randwick-Petersham

Liam’s third full year in 3rd grade saw him become one of the few senior players in the team, taking on more responsibility. As always, he was reliable with both bat and ball and played a lot better than his stats may suggest. Liam is without a doubt the biggest finger spinner, possibly even the biggest turner of a ball in the club. He displayed his outstanding fielding in all positions, particularly taking some handy catches in gully.

Matt Giumelli – 11 matches (228 runs, 20 wickets, 1 catches) Highlights: 109*and 4/61 vs North Sydney, 3/47 vs Gordon, 31 vs Campbelltown

Matt played majority of the season in 3rd grade and was the second leading wicket taker with 20 wickets and second leading run scorer with 228 runs, showing his genuine all-round capabilities. He didn’t have as much success in the middle-order as I’d hoped, ending up back in his comfortable position as an opener with more success. Matt thinks a lot about the game and comes up with some very good ideas and has a great work ethic at training.

Taylor Charles – 11 matches (185 runs, 3 catches) Highlights: 53 vs North Sydney, 37 vs Mosman

Taylor played in all 3rd grade matches when he was available, although missing 4 games due to overseas holidays. For the first time ever in his career, he did not keep but thoroughly enjoyed his time in the field. He continued his role as senior pro and Vice-Captain at the experienced age of 23. He did not have as good as a time with the bat as the previous season, but stayed positive and I am sure Taylor will be back to his run-scoring best next season.

93

Michael Pepper – 9 matches (141 runs, 6 catches) Highlights: 53 vs Mosman, 49 vs Northern District

Michael was our overseas player who joined us in Round 4 and started off well with a well compiled 49 and finished in the same manner with a positive 53. Michael will be disappointed with the matches in between, although he did not have a lot of luck, getting out in strange ways. Whether in the field or keeping, Michael showed his positive energy by setting high standards. He had a very good training ethic and I can guarantee he has gone back home to the UK a better player. Hopefully Michael will return for another season at Parramatta in the near future.

Michael Bellam – 8 matches (208 runs, 4 catches) Highlights: 76 vs Penrith, 66 vs North Sydney, 26 vs Manly

This was Michael’s third full year in grade cricket and it was great to see him establish himself at this level and earn his promotion to 2nd grade. He is a compact, hard-working top order batsmen that puts a big price and value on his wicket. A broken-finger and overseas holiday made his stats look a lot less impressive than they actually were. He is a quality fielder in any position, a great team man and was a pleasure to captain.

Abhishek Talwar – 7 matches (334 runs, 5 wickets, 3 catches) Highlights: 114 vs St George, 73 vs Norths, 51 vs Campbelltown, 3/22 vs Hawkesbury

Abhi proved to be one our most successful off-season recruits, having a stellar first season in grade cricket, totally dominating both 4th and 3rd grade and deserving his promotion to 2nd grade where he has continued to perform. I have never seen anyone make batting looks so easy, especially after we banned him from playing the sweep shot. He is a pleasure to watch and can play every shot in the book. His stats speak for itself, and bowled some very handy off spin and took some crucial wickets. Well done mate.

Yusof Brown – 7 matches (201 runs, 6 catches) Highlights: 48* vs Blacktown, 47 vs Sutherland, 43 vs Sydney Uni

Yusof’s season saw him come down from 2nd to 3rd grade Round 6, where he thrived and dominated scoring 201 runs at 33 in 7 games. Although a naturally aggressive batsman, he had to adapt his game to bat time in 3’s on some difficult wickets, which he did successfully. Without a doubt one of the club’s best fielders in any position. Hopefully a big UK season ahead will see him back in 2nd grade where he belongs, when he returns.

Kyle Masters – 7 matches (168 runs, 8 wickets, 1 catch) Highlights: 54 vs Gordon, 51 vs Campbelltown, 3/57 vs North Sydney

Kyle’s season started late due to overseas holidays and finished early due to work commitments. When he was on the paddock, he displayed many match-winning performances both with bat and ball and has a great winning mentality. Hopefully a full season next year will see him be a big factor in 3rd grade making the top 6.

94

Hayden Goulstone – 6 matches (57 runs, 2 wickets) Highlights: 23 vs Western Suburbs

Hayden’s first year of grade cricket saw him play six 3rd grade matches and look at ease at this level. Although he had limited opportunity in some of the games he did play, he set high standards for himself and strived towards achieving them. A naturally talented cricketed, whether batting, bowling spin or medium pace. His season was cut short due to a foot injury, but hopefully an injury-free season next year will see him consolidate himself at this level, performing to the standards he knows he can achieve.

Ameesh Kaul – 5 matches (147 runs, 2 catches) Highlights: 83 vs Northern District, 40 vs Western Suburbs

Ameesh started off the season in 3rd grade following a full season at this level the previous year. His success a few rounds in saw him earn a well-deserved call up to 2nd grade where he has continued to perform consistently. He is a hard-worker and thoroughly prides himself in his batting and fielding. A very good training ethic, which has been a big factor in his development as a player.

Taj Brar – 5 matches (119 runs, 3 catches) Highlights: 66 vs Campbelltown, 32 vs St George

Taj is a very talented batsman that saw him start of the season in 2nd grade. His return to 3rd grade in Round 5 made him more determined to perform well and see himself back in 2nd grade where he belongs. During his brief time in 3rd grade, he looked a class above. He puts a massive price on his wicket and genuinely loves batting both in matches and in training.

Harrison King – 5 matches (94 runs, 1 catch) Highlights: 54* vs Sydney Uni, 26* vs Eastern Suburbs

Harrison’s first year of grade cricket saw him play 5 matches in 3rd grade after some consistent performances in 4th grade. He looked totally at ease at this level with the bat and he is a player to watch for the future. He bowled some very handy medium pace, particularly in the limited-over games, proving his all-round ability. He has a great temperament for someone so young.

Anirban Maitra – 5 matches (75 runs, 1 catch) Highlights: 41 vs Manly, 19* vs Randwick-Petersham

Anirban was promoted to 3rd grade after standing out and performing consistently in 4th grade. He had immediate success with a match-winning 41 against Manly. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by a hand injury. Predicting a massive season for him in season 2017/18 when back to full fitness.

Chris White – 5 matches (70 runs, 4 wickets, 1 catch) Highlights: 26 vs Manly, 3/86 vs St George

Chris had a season that never really got going after being injured at the end of Round 2 while playing 1st grade. He returned Round 7 in 3’s where he was a consistent performer with both

95

bat and bowl. A fully-fit Chris in season 2017/18 will see him back to his best and where he belongs in the higher grades.

Gabriel D’Angelo – 5 matches (44 runs, 8 wickets) Highlights: 3/15 vs Gordon, 2/7 Randwick-Petersham, 2/22 Sutherland

Great to see Gabriel finally get a crack at 3rd grade after many consistent seasons in lower grades at the club. Proved to be a handy, very economical 3rd grade opening bowler with his big inn-swingers often taking early wickets with the new ball.

Luke McNaught – 5 matches (14 runs, 4 wickets, 2 catches) Highlights: 2/26 Mosman, 2/27 vs Blacktown

Luke came back to the club this season before Christmas after a full season away from cricket, where he played a mixture of 4’s, 3’s and 2’s. While injury prevented him from performing at his best, he hit his consistency the final two rounds. A full pre-season and playing season will see Macca back to his best playing higher grades where he belongs. Great to have you back Macca.

FOURTH GRADE REPORT Final Position: 10th

A tough year for the boys in 4th grade, a lot of great individual performances but as a team with many injuries and wet weather didn’t allow 4th grade to get into a winning rhythm this season.

The season started of slowly with two losses, but some individual performance by the likes of Harrison King 96* and Anirban Maitra 108* both playing some match winning performances to get Parramatta on the board with points. Parramatta was a force to be reckoned with when Campbelltown were defeated in style with an outright.

With many of the young players having a season under their belt we will be able to see better and consistent performances and see 4th grade into the finals. The future for the boys this year looks positive building consistency, this team will be a formidable side in the next year or two.

Player Profiles (players who played 7 or more games)

Aiden Sylvester

Aiden was one of our top wicket takers in 4th grade, with his 1st season at the club he developed a level of consistency during the season. Aiden’s knowledge and understanding of his bowling skills set will help him continue to become a better cricketer

Shivaangar Thushyanthan

Shivaangar has always been a competitor, this year was one of his most compelling seasons yet, though he went unnoticed with big bags of wickets or a big 100, he was a consistent contributor with bat and ball and winning games with grit and toughness. With continued practice and training Shiv will continue to improve.

Manmit Bedi

Manmit was a returning member to the Parramatta Club, Manmit produced some moments where he could perform at a higher level.

Harrison King

Harrisons first year at the club saw many milestones, but also provides a shining a light amongst our up and coming Parramatta Cricketers. His natural game was composed and was happy to take the lead role with the bat. Harry will continue to grow and understand his game and I look forward to him playing higher grades successfully.

Anirban Maitra

Another one of our Parramatta young’uns who stood up when times were tough, his match winning performance of 108* against the Western Suburbs really showed him the art of his batting, every game from then onward he improved.

Julian Greig

A season plagued by injuries for Julian, which kept him off the park, when he was fit he contributed with the bat and really put the bowlers on the back foot. More preparation and organization from Julian should see him fit and raring to go next season.

104

Ankur Patel One of the lower grade stalwarts, Ankurs performance throughout the season was commendable, experience cannot be bought his contribution to settling the batting order allow the young players around him built confidence with the other players.

Daniel Jesuthasan

This was Daniels first year at the club, he a good understanding of grade cricket, and continued to improve game by game, next year will be a big and exciting year for him, more contributions with the bat and behind the stumps could see him in higher grades quickly.

FIFTH GRADE REPORT Final Position – 14th We started the season full of enthusiasm and promise. We had a strong blend of players from the previous year, fresh players to the club and the wealth of talent coming out of the Academy program. Our goal was to cement a position into the top 3 of the competition.

What a season it turned out to be for us. A real rollercoaster of an experience. It had it all. Up’s and down’s. Week in, week out, games were in the balance. We had close wins and losses, massive wins and losses, abandoned matches, matches drawn on protest and just to really spice things up, an actual tied match. We had many frustrations, but with all that came opportunities for success. It wasn’t until we could let go of the things we couldn’t control that we took charge of the things we could that some real magic started to happen in the season. A last wicket win with 1 run to spare against Campbelltown-Camden and a comprehensive win by 9 wickets over the eventual winners of the competition, Randwick-Petersham, were a couple of points of mention. So close, yet so far.

This all lead way to some brilliant individual and team performances. With the bat Athyban taking charge and churning out some big scores including a 97 when we were in dire trouble at 4/14 against Western Suburbs. Some major roles were also played with the bat by Jack Clinton including an 87 against Sutherland and a 73 against Northern Districts which capitalised on the early work from the top order that ground the opposition into submission. In the bowling department, there were some performances that had the rest of the team in pure awe. We all gained inspiration from Gus’s lion hearted efforts. Especially with his two 5 wicket hauls. He would pick himself up off the deck, sometimes literally and crash through the opposition with sheer pace that was way too good for 5th grade. Most days we would just sit back and enjoy the performances of Aussie, as most of the time he didn’t actually require a field. He would mesmerise the batsmen with an impeccable knack of bowling in the channel. For his 1st year in grade he showed that he is a ‘go to man’ and that there is so many Aussie shows to look forward in the years to come. Brad Ripps came to grade cricket for his 1st season and a black cat must have crossed his path on the way. He’s only dismissal method was basically bowled, because we couldn’t catch for him and he couldn’t buy an LBW decision. He could have doubled his wickets tally and he just got better with every game and like Austin he became too good for the bats at times.

On our day, we believe that we could beat any team in the competition and we proved this too ourselves. It was only that the following week we would let ourselves down with a diabolical batting collapse or lazy fielding performances. There were some advantages to these collapses in that we had the chance to come together and rally each other to attempt to defend some very small totals. In our game against Blacktown we had them 7/54 off 35 overs and they had no idea where the next run was going to come from let alone another 17 of them, before they were saved by the rain chasing our modest 70. These were the days that made playing with the team so enjoyable. Never laying over to take defeat but scrapping to the last ball for each other, as mates and for the pride in the baggy blue.

I’d like to thank Calvo for stepping in for me when required and always bringing stability, passion and knowledge to the team when he was around, or just being a sounding board for mid-week conversations about selections, tactics or anything cricket really. It was a real privilege this year to have so many guys stepping out of the academy and into grade cricket and I thank both Calvo and Matt for the breeding ground of talent that they introduce into the club. My role is a pretty tough gig at times, but it makes it all worthwhile when you see the young guys serving it up to the older players. The wide grin on Austin’s face when he’s running down the pitch after just taking a wicket, or when Rushi and Wardy gang up on someone from the other side because they have pissed them off.

I thank the committee and the coaching staff for what they bring to the club and allowing us to get out and play cricket. The work behind the scenes is always gone about with freedom and ease even if it is with tireless effort and this allows for a culture of mateship and enjoyment.

After the previous successes of the 5th grade team over the past couple of years I really thought that this was going to be the year that we would really push for the premiership and I planned that I would lead this push from the front. On paper the season turned out so much different from that. As the season went on and I

111

could look back in retrospect I realised that I was focusing on the results more than the process and with this reflection I saw the magic and momentum that was happening in the team and the club. I vow to look after the little things and the big things will look after themselves and as Brenton Cherry said, “the premiership window is open”.

Player reviews

Fidah Chowdhury Fidah found himself in our team after a run of form that was reminiscent ’s in the 81/82 season. After a short transition, he started to do a job for the team, be it opening the batting to get us off to a good start, bowling some stump to stump to force our hand in certain parts of the game or coming on to break up a partnership. He supported me in a senior role which gave me the opportunity to not have to focus on every aspect of the game and this partnership gave us some impressive results and both enjoyment from our game.

Jack Clinton A new player to the club and the grade scene. After taking a little while to establish himself we all started to take notice of how he could drive an opposition team into the ground once he gets a sniff of some blood in the water. When he’s in, he moves the game along very quickly in our favour with beautiful stroke play and timing. This form saw him promoted to the 4th grade team throughout the year.

Angus Graham Gus played more of his cricket in 4th grade but he is worth a mention as it was an absolute pleasure to have him in our side when he was available. He was far too good for the 5th grade standard and it showed in the way he would clean up the other team. The improvement in his whole game is worth a mention as it was noted that he is the most improved fielder in the club. That is a massive credit to him, as previously he is known as a player who could trip over in the warm up and spike himself.

Liam Gillies It was difficult throughout the year to see Liam go through the frustration of not being able to bowl and only rely only on his batting. This however, gave him the opportunity to bring a standard of professionalism from the higher grades into our team. Despite his frustrations, he still gave this season 100%. No one valued their wicket more than Liam and in the field, he was always a leader in his energy levels and how he was willing to put his body on the line for his mates and his team.

Daniel Jesuthasan Another player who spend most his time up and down between 4th and 5th grade. When he was with us he brought a freshness and dynamic to the team with his energy and work ethic and always stood up to the oppositions challenges. He was rewarded for this with some stellar innings during the year. One in which he almost single handily batted the eventual premiers out of existence. He’s athleticism translates into quality behind the stumps and he sticks at it so his performance on the last ball of the day is the same as the first.

Arsh Kapilla Like a few others Arsh had quite a disruption to his season when he travelled overseas mid-season. Despite this he battled his way back into the team through the shires competition. He shows a strong technique for the top of the order and backed that up with some grinding innings at difficult times on diabolical wickets.

Athyban Kumanan A real breakout year for Athy. He transferred what we knew he was capable of in his junior representative career into the grade scene. He was the heavy lifter in the top order with some real decisive innings, especially leading from the front when his team was in real trouble. This year saw his hard work pay off with the gloves as his improvement was astonishing. More often than not he would turn in a clean sheet.

112

Aravinth Kushelakumaran After a late start to the season due to his studies for the HSC, Ara took some time to find his feet again with bat and ball. Mid-season we started to see the form which we know him for and took him to a regular 4th grade spot last year. He would be disappointed that he just couldn’t apply the pressure with the ball that we know him for, but with the bat we saw some innings that had a touch of master class to them. Especially in the partnership with Daniel against the eventual premiers where he effortlessly flayed the ball to all parts of the ground.

Josh Marquez Josh had a very disruptive. Firstly, he was away for exams and schoolies and then from a knee injury which basically ruled out the rest of his year. When he was around he added professionalism and maturity to the team and we were also aided with his stability with the bat at the top of the order. In particular, the record opening stand for the year with myself which was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever been a part of in cricket.

Rushi Padhye After training the house down in preseason, Rushi found himself yo-yoing between grade and shires. Some weeks there were several dreaded phone calls between us. Firstly, giving him the bad news and then only to ask him back hours before the game. Sometimes I thought he might of a told me to get stuffed. What doesn’t break us makes us stronger. This must have been Rushi’s mantra as he picked himself up and embedded himself as an integral part of the team. He formed one half of the bully boy team with Wardy, where they would not take a backwards step against anyone, no matter how big or experienced they were, they intimidate the opposition to knowing that we were better than them. I know Rushi wanted more runs and wickets out of the season, but what I know that he doesn’t, is that he was probably only one bad ball an over away from being the best spinner in the comp.

Austin Philip A young man who is going places. A pleasure to play with and lifts the team with his pure excitement and love for the game. The whole team thoroughly enjoyed his relentless mockery of the opposition batsmen. Not since have we seen a smile on the face of a bowler so wide as when Aussie takes a wicket, let alone a Michelle. One of the highlights of our year. He’s also great at livening up the change room “Hey boys, I’m with the big boys now”.

Brad Ripps He’s first year at grade cricket and playing on turf for that matter, and other than remembering to tighten his new spikes for their first use he took to it like a duck to water. Brad showed great development over the season which saw him as one of the most devastating fast bowlers of the comp. There were some scorching spells towards the back end of the season and you could literally see the batsmen shaking. Brads figures don’t reflect the quality of his season, and this is due to some bad luck, but mainly his team mates not backing him up. He could have finished with another 10 to 15 wickets if we could have hung on to all the chances he created.

Ben Roughan Ben is a quality cricketer because he keeps putting his hand up and performing in support of his team. This year in his first year of grade he had a strong start to the year, he then went off to pursue his goal of playing for his school where he took his grade form and built on it and churned out some massive scores. He has an ability to play all sorts of roles with the ball. Be that breaking up the top order or getting the most out of an old ball and a flat deck. He especially excels in the role of breaking up annoying partnerships.

Matthew Ward To our surprise, it took Wardy a few games to get in the swing of it. It wasn’t the talent, it just seemed to be a run of bad luck. When he was about to get going he would be set back with another injury. Midway through the season we started to see the performances come forth. This translated into a confidence to stand up and take the game and any opponent head on. Matt is the sort of player you want in the trenches next to

113

you. Straight up and straight in. For this reason, Kev was always trying to pinch him off me. He also displays a real talent for the inner workings of the game and I was always open to what thoughts or opinions he had during the day. FIFTH GRADE

POIDEVIN GRAY SHIELD

POIDEVIN GRAY SHIELD REPORT

Final Position: Undefeated Premiers

After a disappointing 2015/16 campaign there was a real passion and desire to improve from our position of 19th. With a young and athletic/ enthusiastic team our goal was to be the most competitive and best fielding side in the competition and in my opinion we definitely were.

Round 1 We showed a standard of cricket we knew we were capable of and managed to defeat Mosman in a tight match. Was a good way to kick off the season, giving us the self-belief.

Round 2 We continued our winning ways defeating a good North Sydney outfit at Old Kings.

Round 3 We played Western Suburbs who were boasting a lot of first graders and were always going to be a tough opposition but we managed to knock them off also starting the season with 3/3.

Round 4 We played Blacktown at home where we won in a close game taking us to the Christmas break undefeated.

Round 5 Away from home at Mark Taylor Oval, playing Northern District saw us win, another close one against a top class side.

Round 6 We played UNSW, again in a close one that went down to the last over. After all preliminary rounds completed Parramatta 6/6

The Quarter final saw us come up against Sydney University who had a strong batting line up and an even stronger bowling attack. Sydney Uni batted first and posted a competitive 168 on a turning wicket. We managed to chase that down in the final over 9 wickets down. It was another close game where we came away with the win.

122

The semi-final against Hawkesbury was washed out without a ball being bowled therefore we staged a home Grand final at Old Kings oval against St George.

The Grand Final Parramatta vs St George is historically always a close game like the Green Shield Final in 08/09 beating St George off the last ball to win the Premiership. But in this year’s PGs final it was a different story. Parra batted first and dominated the whole 50 overs scoring 5/255. A score this big is worth more in a grand final and was always going to be difficult to chase down and against our tight bowling and the best fielding side in the competition. St George looked good early getting away to 0/40 before a collapse saw them 5/60. From there the game was comfortably in our hands. A steady flow of wickets meant St George was bowled out for 164 and the title was ours. 2 times in 5 years and 3 times in total for Parra proving the young talent that is coming through the grades via the pathway system, which is looking good for the future. An undefeated Poidevin-Gray season for the first time in Parramatta’s history and hoping to repeat the feat next year.

It was an absolute pleasure to captain the side this season. The narrow wins in an undefeated season proved that our side was full of tough cricketers that had the passion and desire for winning and succeeding. It seemed last season’s loss after loss provided us with the drive to win and keep doing it. Winning is a habit and a great habit to get into The best teams find ways to win when the game is in the balance and that was definitely something we managed to do this season.

The Two major contributing factors to this were: 1) We were the best fielding side in competition 2) As a bowling unit we gave away the least amount of extras in total

At the start of the season before the first round, JC spoke in length about the importance of these 2 disciplines. As a captain, it was great to see us as a unit deliver

Special thank you to the following people:  Head Coach Jason Coleman (JC) well supported by Paul Sullivan and Paul Calvert  Our devoted scorers Lisa Bellam and Tony Simonsen  Ron and the club for their support on match days and throughout the season  Other club members for coming down to support

123

 The boys on the Hill

Thanks for the effort lads. It was an incredible PGs campaign. Now to win it back to back and undefeated once again. It’s something that still send shivers down my spine hasn’t sunk in yet. Well done again boys!

PLAYERS

Timothy Ward – 8 matches (381 runs, 11 catches)

Led from the front as skipper both with the bat and in the field. Great reward for hard work and desire to win. (Written by Jason Coleman)

Taj Brar – 8 matches (261 runs, 4 catches)

Solid opening partner. A big part of our success laying the platform for our middle order.

George Joseph – 8 matches (121 runs, 8 catches, 1 stumping)

As always Georges wicket keeping was mistake free and gave us positive energy from behind the stumps.

Matthew Giumelli – 8 matches (84 runs, 10 wickets, 2 catches)

Matt bowled well this year always picking up key wickets when he was brought on to bowl. Batted well in the final when he was back in his comfortable position at the top of the order.

Owen Simonsen – 8 matches (71 runs, 10 wickets, 2 catches)

Bowled well throughout the whole PGs campaign, always bowling his 10 overs for minimal runs. Fielded well in all positions with safe hands.

124

Michael Pepper – 7 matches (166 runs, 2 catches) Michael was a great asset to the club this season, scored some handy 30s, bowled some hand overs when required.

Evan Pitt – 7 matches (129 runs, 1 catch)

Scored some valuable runs in the middle order, often found the boundary in the latter overs.

Jacob Workman – 7 matches (59 runs, 14 wickets, 4 catches)

Bowled the house down was pick of bowlers deserved his 14 wickets, cool head under pressure with the bat and often saw us home in tight finishes.

Liam Lofts – 7 matches (7 wickets, 2 catches)

The most unlucky bowler in cricket in my opinion. Always bowled very economically and was unlucky to not take more wickets. Always knew when I threw lofty the ball the run rate would plummet.

Michael Sullivan – 7 matches (8 wickets, 1 catch)

Great job with the new ball, consistently removing the top order players setting the platform for our spinners in the middle overs.

Michael Bellam – 5 matches (143 runs, 1 catch)

Michael showed good form in the early rounds and was a big part of our early victories. Enthusiastic fielder who always gives 100%.

Gabriel D’Angelo – 4 matches (10 wickets, 1 catch)

Gabriel forced his way into the side during the second half of the campaign to a need for a 3rd seamer, always picked up handy wickets and bowler very good at the death when under pressure.

Liam O’Farrell – 2 matches (6 runs, 2 catches)

Liam’s first year at the club, when given his opportunity with the gloves he set the standard for the whole team.

125

James Elliot – 2 matches (27 Runs)

James played in the early rounds, his hard hitting 27 against Mosman was great to watch hitting boundaries at will.

A big thank you to all the boys that helped out as 12th and 13th man this year, Liam Gillies and Hayden Goulstone who unfortunately couldn’t be in the starting 11. Both JC and I are very grateful for your commitment to the team.

A W GREEN SHIELD SEASON REPORT

We entered the 2016-17 Green Shield Season with high expectations having a group which had had success at PDCA level. Another big preseason, selection and preparation phase was put in place in a bid to ensure that potential resulted in outcomes.

The preparation got off to a great start with strong performances in the annual Gerry Hazlett match v The Kings School and the annual Lou Benaud Cup match v Penrith at Bowral. Both matches ended in strong wins and a boost to the collective confidence of the group. So, heading into round 1 against last season’s premiers Mosman at Old Kings, the group was full of quiet confidence. Rain impacted the match and the round and a combination of sloppy execution and the impact of rain resulted in a narrow loss by a single run.

This wake-up call was followed up by 4 wins in succession against a mix of opponents, including eventual premiers Sydney. In that match, our boys played probably their most dominant cricket producing a fantastic defensive effort in the field and knocking over the U16 England captain and competition leading run scorer, Jack Haynes, for 1. This string of results was upset by a poor effort against Western Suburbs meaning a win against the well performed Blacktown away was needed to secure a home final advantage. In a close fought match, the boys prevailed over Blacktown to make the finals for the first time several seasons and only the second time in 10 years.

In the qualifying final against Mosman the boys were cruising to an easy victory off the back of 82 from skipper Jacob Workman with the early bowling dominating the visitors. Alas, a lack of concentration let Mosman back in the game late and in the end, the boys fell over the line. In hindsight, that late effort probably foretold the drop off in energy for the group and in the semi-final against eventual premiers Sydney, the boys struggled through the 42 degree heat and some inconsistent umpiring to fall well short.

While the end was disappointing, the campaign as a whole was a success getting Parramatta back into the top echelon of Green Shield sides and the top 4 finish was well deserved. Next season will come again with high expectations as our academy boys continue to develop and perhaps we can push to the final and maybe even snatch the trophy.

Parramatta Women’s Grade Cricket Club 2016 /2017 Season Report

Female cricket within the Parramatta District has much to celebrate, both on and off the field. This year saw PWGCC represented in the Parramatta District Cricket Association, NSW District Cricket Association and Sydney Women’s Grade competitions, which is an achievement with in itself yet alone the success that has been experienced over the past seasons. With the ongoing success of our premier, 2nd Grade and Brewers Shield sides, we also entered teams in the Margaret Peden and Mollie Dive District competitions with our Margaret Peden side adding to the PWGCC’s success by winning the Shield.

This year also saw the introduction of 2 all only female Saturday morning cricket sides into the Parramatta District Cricket Association, competing in 12-2 and 14-1 divisions respectively. Having these all female teams play, allowed female participation to gain traction, but more importantly , earning the respect of their peers, with the 14-1 side ending the season in third position due to the continuing wet weather during the finals, after leading the competition for a majority of the regular season.

District Cricket offered the opportunity to participate in the Mollie Dive and Margaret Peden Representative Seasons, these reports are within, however it needs to be highlighted that the Margaret Peden side secured the Shield in a very competitive match of cricket played at the highest level, the PDCA’s first Margaret Peden Shield in 97 years. Further recognition of our teams efforts were made when the PWGCC was awarded the “Meyer Shield” for the best percentage of all female district teams, along with the “Ward Shield” that is a representation of both female and male sides percentages of all Associations.

The PWGCC Brewer side dominated both the short form and long form of the Brewer Shield Completion, being finalist in the T20 Series , however, going on to dominate and secure the inaugural Brewer Shield for the Parramatta District Cricket Club.

Our 2nd Grade secured its second grand finial appearance in a row after playing some of its finest cricket when it counted, unfortunately, the weather came in to play in the final, which saw PWGCC being edged out due to the wet weather format.

Season highlights:

 PWGCC 12-2 : o R Byrne 51* o R Byrne 5/4

The PWGCC had a number of players selected in the CNSW Academies with some going on to Representative sides to compete at Nationals. This is a great reflection of the overall strength within PWGCC.

With the ongoing development of the PWGCC, the 2017 / 2018 season will witness additional growth in the juniors, as well as the ongoing strategy of the PWGCC being in a position to nominate a competitive 1st Grade cricket team within the next two seasons.

These are exciting times for female cricket within our club, without the support of players, parents, PDCC and the ongoing hard work and dedication by the PWGCC club officials , the above mentioned would not be achievable, each one of you are the life blood of the PWGCC , thank you.

In closing, “You ain’t seen nothing yet”

Scott Reibelt President Parramatta Women’s Grade Cricket Club

Molly Dive Shield Report

The 2016/17 season witnessed the Parramatta District Cricket Association entering a U/13 representative side in the Mollie Dive shield competition whose inaugural performance provided some wonderful personal achievements that contributed to the overall team’s performance during the representative season.

A baptism of fire was experienced with our first match requiring interstate travel to play the ACT, who has previous experience in the representative arena.

Although a solid performance, we learnt early, that sundries are the Achilles heel of the fielding side.

Round 2 through Round 5 saw the PWGCC take the honours with some very impressive efforts, with specific highlights such as:

 60 run partnership (round 2): K Reibelt 23 n.o. and G Pooley 23 n.o.  90 run partnership (round 3): J Hankinson 41 and K Reibelt 40 n.o.  128 run partnership (round 5): Z Thakur 82 and J Hankinson 46 Round 7 saw that indeed ‘catches win matches’ and allowed the opposition to establish a commanding score. However, throughout the representative competition the bowling and fielding spoils were equally shared, with special mention to Delana Kodikara and Grace Pooley who topped the representative bowling averaged respectively: D Kodikara Best figures 4/16 Average 6.73 Wickets – 11.00

142

G Pooley Best figures – 2/7 Average 7.27 Wickets 11.00

In summary, the PWGCC completed the district representative season in 4th position. Unfortunately the Mollie Dive competition does not play semi-finals.

Both the PWGCC Mollie Dive and Margaret Peden Shield (U15) were awarded the ‘Alan and Rae Ward’ Shield for the most points on percentage obtained in the women’s shield competition, along with the GH (Gerry) Meyer Shield, again for the best points or percentage obtained by all of the associations teams.

Congratulations to our Margaret Peden champions who went on to dominate the regular representative season as minor premiers and secured the shield in a final to be remembered.

In closing thank you to all coaches, managers and parents. Without your unselfish time given and support the above results could not be achieved. Thank you.

Parramatta Margaret Peden Report 2016 At the outset, the team came together confident in their own abilities but wary of the competition. Taking that self-confidence, the team built up strong momentum with each game achieving some strong results & going through the regular season undefeated. Batting first against Newcastle in the semi-final, the scoreboard didn’t truly reflect the game. While the result showed a win by a clear margin, Newcastle were always threatening. Camden set an imposing total in the final. With a strong bowling line up, the target was always going to be tough. One of the things that our team had developed during the competition was self-belief. Patience, creating partnerships & having wickets in hand were crucial in the final. The maturity that all our players showed in the final was a testament to their personal growth as cricketers, culminating with a fantastic final that was appreciated by spectators from both teams as one of the best games they had witnessed in recent times. Congratulations to the girls on a great season. None of the individual results could have happened without the team working together as they did. Also thanks to the PDCA for their support during the season.
