Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 6 EXECUTIVE REPORTS

President It gives me great pleasure to report on a successful season for Cricket Illawarra in 2015/16.

The local competition followed the formats played in the previous seasons with first and second grade playing a combination of two day and one day games, whereas 3rds and 4ths played all one day fixtures. In first grade Corrimal won the minor premiership, with Helensburgh and Keira equal second, and last year’s premiers Balgownie finishing fourth. Keira and Balgownie each recorded solid wins in their semi finals and met in the decider at North Dalton Park. The Lions recovered from a disastrous start to post a competitive 8/196 off their 90 overs, however David Murphy’s blistering 138no and Luke McGregor’s 60no saw Balgownie canter to an emphatic 10 wicket victory and back to back premierships.

In the lower grades, Northern Districts defeated Keira in seconds, Keira beat Corrimal in thirds and Dapto Gold defeated Uni in fourths. Well done to all premiers.

Congratulations to Keira who secured the Club Championship, and who were the big improvers in first grade, rising from 9th to equal second.

All grades again participated in the T20 competition either side of Christmas and the finals day became a memorable one for the Northern Districts club. The Butchers secured three of the four finals (including first grade) and Wests won the other title. In opening batsman Lachlan Dunn the Butchers have Illawarra’s first new age T20 master blaster.

On the representative front Illawarra participated in three senior competitions, the first of which was the Kingsgrove T20 competitions. Illawarra had a very disrupted and disjointed preparation to this competition which commenced in late September and not surprisingly the results were poor. We have to prepare and focus a lot better if we are to be competitive in future seasons, in what is the strongest club competition in world cricket.

The highlight of the representative season was undoubtedly the inaugural Plan B Regional Bash. This was a new T20 competition for 16 country areas played in a knock-out format. Illawarra Flames were only allowed to select 3 players that had played in the Sydney T20 competition, with the competition geared towards providing younger players with a taste of representative cricket. The ‘Flames’ won their first game against Central Coast in a canter, and then won a tough game against Newcastle in the second round to progress to the finals day at the hallowed turf of the SCG.

It was a great thrill for all the players, officials and spectators that attended the finals day at the SCG. Illawarra Flames were drawn to play first up against Northern Inland Bolters and chased a score of 146 for victory. After losing early wickets and falling well below the run rate the Flames got back into the match with a fine partnership between guest players (and former local juniors) Tylar Edwards and Dan Constable. They almost stole victory before Edwards lost his wicket in the last over for a superb 90.

The seniors finished their commitments by travelling to Wagga for the 50 over country championships and with a new look side performed well although recording only one win from their 3 games. I would like to especially thank new coach Tim Carter for his work with the rep team, in what was a difficult season.

The U19 team failed to win a game in its 3 matches played at the start of the season. Congratulations to Port Kembla’s Jason Ralston, who was later selected in the NSW Country/ACT U19 team that competed in the National U19 championships. Jason was still U17 (and somehow didn’t make the equivalent U17 side) and has a very bright future. His pace and accuracy worried many of the top first grade batsman this year.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 7 Congratulations to Helensburgh’s Hayden McCrae who won the Ring Family trophy for Cricketer of the Year at the Presentation night held a Wests Leagues Club in April.

Off the field, congratulations to the Corrimal club who celebrated their 125th season, a great achievement for a proud club. The Cougars narrowly missed what would have been their first Senior Club championship in over 30 years.

There was a pleasing increase in junior numbers with total numbers up 30%, and numbers up 15% if Milo registrations (for those not playing competition cricket) are removed. This is a credit to all the clubs, and to the Junior sub-committee headed by Doug Murphy. The challenge is to keep those numbers, and continue to build. The Butchers have experienced a big surge in numbers and now have the biggest junior numbers. Congratulations to Dapto who won the Junior Club Championship and the prized U16 final against Keira.

The U16 final was one of the last matches umpired by the great Wally Smith. Wal has retired from the umpiring ranks and was recognised by the Association at the Annual Presentation night for his tremendous career. Besides being a top umpire, I think I speak on behalf of all cricketers that Wal has always been a great bloke to have in the Association, and I hope that he remains around the cricketing circles in the years ahead. Thanks Wal and all the best for the future.

On the topic of Umpires, thanks to Morgan Prosser, Barry Moir and Neil Findlay for their work this season. They were slightly undermanned in troops at various stages of the season, and anyone thinking of donning a white coat next season should contact them.

I would like to thank the Management Committee for their hard work- Neale Benson, Mark Waldock, Bruce Tosswill, Morgan Prosser, Matthew Ward, Martin King and Andrew Maher. I’d also like to thank our Zone and Competition Administrator Glenn Bridge who in second season did a great job, particularly in ramping up publicity and expanding our foray into social media.

I’d like to thank Mike Driscoll from the Illawarra Mercury and Tim Robinson from Win TV for their excellent coverage of the season.

The Association has recorded a surplus which is an excellent result considering the absence of a major sponsor. Thank you to the finance committee, in particular Neale Benson. That work will enable the Association to make some key decisions in the months ahead as to how to best use the Association’s funds, and in that regard we have embarked on a major review of all cricket related facilities.

Thanks to our minor sponsors New Millennium Trophies, Blackchrome Sportswear and Johnston Legal who sponsored the live stream broadcast of the T20 finals.

The Association has been lobbying to host regular high profile cricket at North Dalton Park and has been awarded the 2017 Australian Country Championships to be played in January 2017. That is likely to be followed by the first Sheffield Shield game to be played at NDP in February 2017, and I’d like to thank Wollongong City Council and Destination Wollongong for the work done in securing the tournament, and likely Shield game.

Thanks to all the volunteers from all clubs that made the past season a successful one that provides plenty of optimism to look forward to in 2016/17.

Mark Johnston – President

Publicity

Another prosperous season in media relations other than Illawarra Mercury cutbacks that failed to see full results published in Monday edition.

Players were always available for TV and radio interviews throughout the season, which our media partners greatly appreciated. Media support of Cricket Illawarra was heightened during the season with increased coverage of Cricket Illawarra activities on all media outlets.

Weekly Newsletter was again published most weeks thanks to the assistance of Michael Doig & John Pemberton. The reach of weekly newsletter was approximately 2000 people. Regular contributions came from Neil Findlay and Doug Murphy. Newsletter for 2015/16 also had contributions from clubs and also picked up personal milestones as publicity team searched for articles of interest. Newsletter also appeared on Cricket Illawarra Social Media weekly.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 15 Cricket Illawarra Facebook page commenced in January 2015 and now has passed likes. The content provided is for general interest and proves very popular. Junior Rep activities are most popular and hopefully more information can be provided from Cricket Illawarra Junior competition to make this more popular in the seasons ahead. To the minority who posted negative comments or abusive remarks during the past, you have been found and warned and in some cases blocked from this site. Those who post a comment should know that an email is received for every comment which can now be used for Judiciary purposes if abusive language is used.

Cricket Illawarra Twitter commenced in October 2014, and has surpassed 400 followers. Twitter is quick and easy and generally attracts a different audience to Facebook. This medium is a very popular medium within cricket circles. It should be noted that media outlets do get a lot of their information from CI Twitter.

Cricket Illawarra TV on You Tube has just commenced. Library is full of past videos and the TV site has current videos. Link to channel is up on website in useful links. It is hoped that this medium will grow substantially during season 2016/17 with lots of interviews planned. Also plenty of photos will be added to CI TV soon

Sponsors

A big thank you to the partners of Cricket Illawarra in 2015/16:

- CCNSW - Blackchrome Sports - Kookaburra Sports - New Millennium Trophies - Johnston Legal

Hopefully the portfolio of partners will be more substantial in 2016/17.

Judiciary

CI Judiciary Panel convened once during the season

2 Players were found guilty

4 players pled guilty and were not required to face the panel

In total 6 players were suspended during the season

Our thanks go to the Judiciary Panel

Presentation

Cricket Illawarra Senior Presentation was held at Wests Leagues Club on 9th April 2016. 106 people were in attendance and slide show was again an improvement on previous year. Further advancements are planned for 2016/17. A big thank you to Neale Benson for helping again, and the Wests Illawarra Cricket Club for their assistance. The presentation itself is a major event, and it is hoped that all clubs throw more support in terms of attendance as the slide show is meant to entertain.

Look forward to doing it all again for season 2016/17

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 16 DELEGATE REPORTS

Country Cricket NSW The Country Cricket Association enjoyed a good year in 2015-16. As usual the summer was very busy and the Association was again able to successfully fulfil its programme.

The Illawarra Cricket Association remains one of the most respected zones. Despite our performances not being up to our usual high standards the Association continues to greatly support the endeavours of Illawarra.

During the season a sub-committee was formed to look at possible boundary changes that may be required to sustain the performance of New South Wales Country Cricket. Whilst nothing has been decided it is fair to assume that any re-alignment of boundaries will affect Illawarra.

The MOU with ACT continues to be successful with the ACT-NSW Country U/ 19 team being beaten in the final of the Australian U/19 Championships by NSW Metropolitan; this was the only match they lost. Unfortunately the U/17s finished seventh which was a great disappointment. However, the pathway coaches are working hard to rectify the result for 2016-17.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment of the season was the performance of the New South Wales Country team at the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Championships held in Mt Gambier. Despite only losing two games they finished fifth. Right up until the last afternoon they were a chance of winning the Championship but lost to Victoria by 1 wicket. The Association will be doing everything possible to ensure a better result in 2016-17.

The biggest event in country cricket for 2015-16 was the Plan B Regional Bash. This Twenty/20 tournament attracted great interest across rural and regional New South Wales with large crowds turning up to some matches. The culmination of the competition was at the SCG and was an outstanding success. Unfortunately, the Illawarra Flames were narrowly defeated in the preliminary final despite a brilliant innings of 90 from Tyler Edwards.

Cricket NSW remains committed to investing in an upgrade of facilities throughout country NSW. This season the Warren Smith nets were opened in Wagga Wagga and smaller projects like St Columba Anglican Schools (nets & pitch) in Port Macquarie were also completed. Cricket NSW is committed to deliver high performance Centres of Excellence throughout the state.

The success of the Country Cricket Association is due to the contributions of many, most importantly sponsors. We are indeed fortunate to enjoy the generous support of Cricket NSW who is responsible for the funding of most of our competitions as well as Zone Grants, Zone Administrators, Regional Development Managers, Regional Academy Coaches and the Country Program’s Manager. Our other sponsors are no less important in contributing to our success. These include CUB, Kookaburra, McDonalds and Transport for NSW, Dubbo City Council and Port Stephens Shire Council.

Cricket NSW is commitment to country cricket in 2015-16 was again demonstrated by the holding of a Board meeting and a Sheffield Shield match in Coffs Harbour. The Board sees this as an important link between Cricket NSW and cricket in rural and regional associations throughout the state and intends to continue this into the future with Wollongong in contention for a Shield match in 2016-17.

The 2016-17 season will again be busy for Cricket Illawarra with the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Championships being played in Wollongong. This again illustrates the high reputation that Cricket Illawarra enjoys. This would have been a dream come true for Ivor Ewin and Norm Warren and it is very sad that they won’t be there to witness it.

All Country Cricket Zones are indebted to Bruce Whitehouse for his efforts. Just how many kilometres does he travel each season? Bruce’s dedication is unparalleled and all those involved in Country Cricket thank him for his efforts.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 17 Finally, I wish to repeat that is an honour to represent Illawarra on the Country Cricket Committee of Management. It is not something that I take for granted. I have been extremely fortunate for the support that I have received over the years and I thank you for this.

Ian Hogg – Delegate & Chairman CCNSW

The first umpires association was formed in the Illawarra in 1929 and, since that time, the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association has benefited from the services of numerous long-standing members. The Association’s first Secretary, Bill Mintorn, occupied that position for 38 years and, some years later, Ron O’Brien served as Secretary for 22 years. Wal Smith and Jack Tolhurst both umpired for over 35 years while Rod Porter, Morgan Prosser and Gordon Rodwell have each officiated for more than 30 years.

Affiliated umpire associations within the Zone:

The Illawarra Zone is a single cricket association, located almost exclusively in the . The Cricket Illawarra competition consists of 4 Grades and is played between 10 clubs most of which are in close proximity to each other. The one exception is the Helensburgh club, located 35 kilometres to the north of Wollongong. Being such a small Zone, Illawarra has only one affiliated umpire association, namely the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association Inc.

Finals appointments:

The Illawarra Twenty20 Competition was again played as part of the weekly competition in the period just before and after Christmas. The Finals matches in all Grades were played at North Dalton Park and its surrounding precinct with the officiating umpires being:

 1st Grade: Helensburgh v. Northern Districts – Neil Findlay and Ean Martin  2nd Grade: Keira v. Northern Districts – Frank Ciocci and Steve Saye  3rd Grade: Corrimal v. Wests-Illawarra – David Dobinson and Peter Ferguson  4th Grade: Keira Red v. Northern Districts Gold – Chris Adams and Denis Veronese

The season culminated with the Two Day Finals in 1st and 2nd Grade and the limited overs One Day Finals in 3rd and 4th Grade. The umpires appointed for these Finals were:

 1st Grade: Balgownie v. Keira – David Cullen and Neil Findlay  2nd Grade: Keira v. Northern Districts – Frank Ciocci and Peter Ferguson  3rd Grade: Corrimal v. Keira – Chris Adams and Brian Druery  4th Grade: Dapto Gold v. University Blue – Rod Porter and Denis Veronese

At the end of the season, the following umpires were also appointed to Junior Finals:

 Under 16A: Dapto v. Keira – Wal Smith  Under 16B: Corrimal v. Wollongong – Barry Moir  Under 14A: Dapto v. Northern Districts – Charles Brockley  Under 14B: Dapto White v. Keira Red – Evan Lane

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 18 Umpire numbers:

The Illawarra CUA has a total of 20 members. Unfortunately, however, during the season the services of a number of members were again lost and eventually only 17 members remained active. At the beginning of the season, long serving Wal Smith finally decided it was time to retire; after Christmas, Darren Sutherland also retired and, soon afterwards, Ray Trindall was unable to umpire because of illness. Further, several others were often unavailable because of work and personal commitments. Although umpires were still appointed to all matches in 1st and 2nd Grade each round, fewer numbers meant that most 2nd Grade matches only had one umpire and it was no longer possible to cover many of the 3rd Grade fixtures. On a brighter note, however, towards the end of the season former Helensburgh player and NSWCUSA member John Walker joined the Association and performed very creditably.

Executive and office bearers:

Once again the Executive of the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association has consisted of:

 President – Morgan Prosser.  Secretary-Treasurer – Barry Moir.

As usual, Morgan Prosser has led the Association enthusiastically and has been ably assisted by Barry Moir who has performed all of his duties efficiently. Their whole-hearted efforts have been greatly appreciated by all members.

Other key office bearers have been Neil Findlay (Training Officer) and David Cullen, David Dobinson and Peter Ferguson (Training Committee) who have together provided training and development activities during the Association’s monthly meetings.

Education and development:

A weekend training course on the Laws of Cricket was planned for June. Unfortunately, none of the aspiring umpires who had indicated that they would participate actually attended the course. Therefore, the NSWCUSA facilitators, Darren Goodger and Muhammad Qureshi, presented a one-day training workshop instead for the 14 umpires from Illawarra and the Southern Highlands who did attend. The workshop began with a short quiz on the Laws of Cricket and was followed by video analysis of decision making and sessions on positioning, handling runners, teamwork and managing player behaviour.

An open book examination on the Laws of Cricket was again held before the season commenced. The purpose of this examination was to facilitate revision of the Laws and no “pass” mark was required. However, it was compulsory to attempt the examination before being able to umpire in Illawarra in 2015/2016.

Throughout the season, training continued in the form of quizzes emailed out to members before each monthly Association meeting. The questions provoked spirited discussion at the meetings and significantly improved the members’ understanding of both the Laws of Cricket and local Playing Conditions. During the meetings, training sessions were also conducted on enjoying umpiring, decision making and umpiring in the Finals.

Key highlights:

With the Illawarra team again participating in the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup, Illawarra umpires were appointed to matches in this SCA competition. Accordingly, Darren Sutherland stood with Sydney umpire, Glenn Stubbings, at North Dalton Park in Illawarra‘s two matches against University of NSW and Sutherland while David Cullen and Neil Findlay travelled to Coogee Oval to umpire Randwick-Petersham’s two matches against North Sydney and Sydney.

At NSW Country level, Neil Findlay was again appointed to the Country Umpires Representative Panel. He travelled to Wagga Wagga for the Southern Country Championship Carnival and, after umpiring in the preliminary Rounds of the Plan B Regional Bash, stood in the Sixers Conference Final at the S.C.G. David Cullen was appointed to the

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 19 Country Supplementary Panel once more and he umpired in the Country Colts Carnival in Dubbo; officiated in the Kookaburra Cup Carnival in Griffith and stood the under 16 State Challenge match in Sydney. In addition, Neil and David both umpired in the Under 16 International Series played between Australia and Pakistan while, along with several other members of the Country Panels, David also accepted an invitation to umpire in the Sydney 1st Grade Competition. Finally, Darren Sutherland was again afforded the opportunity of umpiring at Country level, officiating in the Country Colts Carnival in Dubbo.

Several umpires once again stood in the NSW Junior DCA Inter-Association Shield Competitions. The appointed officials for the Illawarra teams involved were Chris Adams, Charles Brockley, David Cullen, Brian Druery, Evan Lane, Barry Moir and Ray Trindall.

The umpire exchange programme initiated in 2013/2014 between the Illawarra CUA and New Zealand’s Central Districts CUSA continued, with Mike George travelling from New Zealand to umpire in Wollongong in November. Brian Druery then flew to New Zealand in January to officiate in a two-day match between local team, Manamatu, and Hawkes Bay’s Wharangi played in Palmerston North. This match was the equivalent of a NSW Country Cup fixture and was played over 112 overs per day. The exchange is now well established and umpires from both Associations have already indicated their desire to participate in future years.

Once again, the Illawarra CUA supported the annual Charity Day organised by the Dapto and Helensburgh clubs before Christmas. Umpires donated their day’s match fees and contributed a total of $800.00 to the fundraising efforts for the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Finally, in April the inaugural Illawarra CUA Annual Dinner was held to celebrate the season and to recognize the achievements of members. Certificates were presented to those umpires who officiated in the various Finals and to acknowledge various umpiring milestones. In addition, the winners of the Association’s two major awards were announced – Neil Findlay received the “Wal Smith” Umpire of the Year Award while Ean Martin was the first winner of the Most Improved Umpire of the Year Award. Other umpires to have performed creditably throughout the season were David Cullen, David Dobinson, Peter Ferguson and Steve Saye.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 22 Regional Bash The inaugural Regional Bash was launched in 2015/16 with 16 Regional teams competing in a state-wide T20 knockout competition. Two conferences were formed, Thunder & Sixers.

Illawarra Flames was the anointed name of our home side forming a new era in Country cricket competition. Each team were allowed 3 guest players with approval from CCNSW. Flames used local juniors: Dan Constable, Tylar Edwards & Kyle Brockley.

Our Flames drew Central Coast Rush in Rd 1 on November 1 at North Dalton

Squad: Dan Constable (c), Lachlan Dunn, Hayden McCrea, Tylar Edwards, Matt Skora, Jamie Fleming, Dale Scifleet, Michael Stephenson, Matt Ward, Kendrick Hatton, Kyle Brockley, Pat Hammond Officials: Tim Carter (coach)

Round 1

Rush won the toss and decided to bat first on a beautiful sunny day at North Dalton but were soon in early trouble at 2/5. A steadying partnership took the Rush to 3/90 but collapsed to end their innings at 8/109 after 20 overs. Kyle Brockley finished with 3/10 off 4 overs.

Lachlan Dunn & Hayden McCrae got the Flame off to a flyer combining in a 90 run opening stand and Flames reached the target in 13 overs with Lachlan Dunn finishing 59no off 32 balls.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 23 Round 2

Flames were up against Newcastle Blasters on November 8, in a match originally scheduled for Newcastle Sportsground, but due to a problem with ground condition, match was transferred to North Dalton Park. Then the rain set in, and on the Friday prior to the match, with the assistance of Wests Cricket Club, Wollongong Council and curator Owen Rice, the match was transferred to Figtree Oval. A washout would mean Blasters progress to SCG final.

Flames on the toss and sent the Blasters into bat on an overcast day, Blasters cruised to 2/87 with rising young star Jason Sangha taking control. It took a run-out to dismiss him before a Pat Hammond led collapse saw Blasters lose their last 8 wickets for just 27 runs to be all out for 114 in the 19th over. Jason Sangha top scored with 27 and Pat Hammond took 4/16 to be the star.

Lachlan Dunn was an early casualty but Hayden McCrae and Dan Constable steadied the ship taking the score to 44. Flames run-rate was struggling to keep up and when brothers Hayden & Mitch McCrae fell in quick succession, the Flames looked to be in trouble. Sent in to have a hit was Michael Stephenson who changed the course of the innings with some massive hits to give the Flame a sniff. Veteran Dale Scifleet joined him at the crease and the pair took the score agonisingly close to the target. With a run required off the last ball, big Michael Stephenson scrambled a quick leg bye to give the Flames an unlikely victory. Big Stevo scored 27 off just 14 balls. The Flames are now off to the SCG.

Sixers Conference Final – December 6 at

The big day arrived when the Flames played on the SCG to play Northern Inland Bolters, with the winner to play Thunder conference winners under lights in the evening.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 24 The Bolters won the toss and decided to bat first on a beautiful day and got off to a flyer until Pat Hammond came into the attack, taking 2 wickets off his first 2 balls. Bolters ended their 20 overs with 4/147, giving the Flames their biggest chase yet. The unbroken 69 run stand came in quick time in the last few overs for the Bolters.

The Flames got off to a shocker losing Lachlan Dunn & Mitch McCrae in first 2 overs to be 2/4, and when Hayden McCrae fell with the score at 3/30 the Flames were in serious trouble. Guest players Tylar Edwards and Dan Constable then combined for a 110 run partnership with Tylar bludgeoning his way to 90 off 59 balls with 6 towering 6’s. When he was dismissed late in the 19th over the Flames were within 8 runs of victory. But some tight bowling left the Flames with too much to do in the last over losing 2 quick wickets to fall 5 runs short. Veteran Dale Scifleet needed a 6 off the last ball but a yorker made that difficult.

It was a great experience for the players and the busload of supporters though and the Flames did our region proud.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 25 Seniors – McDonalds Country Championships Held: Wagga, 20 - 22 November 2015 Squad: Joe McDevitt (c), Xavier McDevitt, Tom McDevitt, Jamie Fleming, David Studholme, Kieran Richards, Amit Balgi, Mitch McCrae, Stephen Bunting, Michael Waldren, Murray Crowe, Oscar Oborn-Corby, Kendrick Hatton Officials: Tim Carter (coach), David Dobinson (manager)

After arriving mid-afternoon Thursday, the team had a hit at the home of the Wagga Cats which was where our first game was to be played against Southern/ACT. The boys had a light run and at the end of the session we had a brief chat to the Wagga first grade captain coach who gave us some advice on the pitch conditions.

Round 1 Illawarra 161 M McCrae 34, D Studholme 23, J McDevitt 22, J Fleming 19, K Richards 17 Southern/ACT 4/162 J Fleming 2/26, O Oborn-Corby 1/15

Friday saw Captain Joe McDevitt win the toss and deciding to have a bat on a very dry pitch. Unfortunately winning the toss didn’t equate to a good start with the bat. Tom McDevitt was the first to fall for 8. This brought the captain to the crease, and with Mitch McRae, took the score to 48 before Joe McDevitt miscued a hook shot and was caught at backward square leg. From here we lost wickets on a regular basis with numerous players making starts but nobody able to convert those starts into a big score. Mitch McRae was the pick of the batsmen with 34 with Illawarra all out for 161 in the 46th over.

With runs on the board we thought that if we could bowl well, particularly our spinners, and field well we could be very competitive. Our fielding was spot on in the early parts with our number 1 fieldsman Mitch McCrae creating a run out to the Southern/ACT 1 for 10. Destructive South Coast batsman Kieran Gray came in at three and took the score to 45 being dismissed for 18 by Oscar Oborn-Corby who returned after a year off due to stress fractures. At the 34 over mark the comparative scores were basically identical and as Southern/ACT passed Illawarra’s score in the 46th over, the only difference was that Illawarra were all out and Southern/ACT were only four wickets down. A valuable lesson learnt about batting out our overs. We bowled quite well but just didn’t have enough runs on the board.

Round 2 Illawarra 152 J Fleming 49, M Crowe 31, K Richards 24 Western 2/153 M Crowe 1/25, S Bunting 1/25

The second game saw Illawarra return to McPherson Oval to take on Western. Once again Captain Joe McDevitt won the toss and chose to bat. Unfortunately Illawarra’s batsmen struggled in the cooler conditions and it was only the experience of Balgownie Captain Coach Jamie Fleming (49) and University all-rounder Murray Crowe (31) that added some respectability to below par score of 152 from 47 overs.

Illawarra started well, picking a wicket in the first over to have Western at 1/0. This was the only highlight of the day with Western chasing down Illawarra’s below par score in the 29th over with only two wickets down.

Round 3 Riverina 155 X McDevitt 3/39, J Fleming 2/27, M Crowe 1/11, S Bunting 1/28 Illawarra 4/158 K Richards 48, A Balgi 34, X McDevitt 23, M McCrae 19

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 26 Day three saw the two winless teams meet at Wagga’s Robertson Oval. Riverina won the toss and chose to bat. Illawarra took wickets at regular intervals to restrict Riverina to 155. The pick of the bowlers were Xavier McDevitt with three wickets and Jamie Fleming with two. Our number one fielder was on fire in the field with 2 run outs and a catch.

Our batting performance in this game was much improved with Kiera opener Kieran Richards taking the lead with 48 and University’s Amit Balgi making 34. Tom McDevitt made 23 but left it to big brother Joe to hit the winning runs with a big six over mid-wicket.

Over all a very disappointing carnival in relation to win-loss ratio but also exciting as it was the start of a new era with only two players over the age of 25. There are some very special times to look forward for Illawarra cricket over the next five years.

No Illawarra player was selected for NSW Country for the CBA Australian Country Championships 2016.

Round 1 Game one of the tournament was against Western the carnival hosts, at a very hard and fast outfield Lady Cutler No2.

We lost the toss on the first morning which meant we were to start in the field. On a fast outfield we managed to contain Western to a total of 9/248 from their 50 overs, a good solid bowling performance by U17 Jason Ralston with figures of 3/21 from 10.

Our batting innings started off strong but we were unable to carry on with the partnerships, plenty of batsman had the foundations laid Kain Flynn-Duncombe 54, Constable 44, Colliss 38 but unfortunately no one was able to carry on with a big score to be able to beat the Westerners, falling short by only 9 runs in the 50th over.

Again Illawarra lost the toss and Central North opted to bat first, batting first was to prove to be a winning formula in the hot conditions of Dubbo as we experienced throughout the carnival.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 28 Illawarra managed to contain Central North to only 210 bowling them out in the 50th over, again solid bowling performance by Ralston with 2/34 along with some quality contributions from Clancy 2/10 and Constable 2/37. Although our batting innings again started well we were unable to follow through to be able to hold together partnerships. Constable provided a classy batting display to produce a half century and young Calder chipped in with a quick fired 29 but it was not enough with our total short by 38.

Central Northern 210 J Clancy 2/10, J Ralston 2/34, J Constable 2/37, M Calder 1/26, A Purdevski 1/50 Illawarra 172 D Constable 50, M Calder 29, K Flynn-Duncombe 28, C Waldock 22 Round 3 The final game of the carnival we returned back to Lady Cutler No 2 to take on Central Coast, after a nail bitter of a finish in the previous seasons colts carnival at Coffs Harbour we knew this was going to be a real contest between both teams. The coin tossing gods again were not on our side with Central Coast winning the toss and electing to bat. With Ralston unavailable for the final match our bowling attack was somewhat depleted, so young U16 Calder stepped up to the plate showing his potential as leg spinner of the future collecting 3 wickets for 55 other bowling contributions from Purdevski 2/28 and Constable 2/49, we managed to bowl the Central Coast boys out in the 45th over but they set us a massive total of 298 to chase.

Our innings didn’t start well with a loss of wicket early but we managed to recover with Toby Flynn-Duncombe belting 110 and contributions from Collis 37, Kain Flynn-Duncombe 22, but there just weren’t enough overs in the day falling short by 27 runs in our 50th over.

Central Coast 298 M Calder 3/55, A Purdevski 2/28, D Constable 2/49, J Colliss 1/28, J Clancy 1/54 Illawarra 6/276 T Fynn-Duncombe 110, R Nikitaris 38, J Colliss 37, D Constable 27, K Flynn-Duncombe 22

Although the results didn’t go our way the Illawarra U19 Colts demonstrated a never say die attitude in all the runs chases that we took on over the carnival. The majority of the boys will be eligible for U19’s again next season and I look forward to seeing their representative careers progress in the future.

Congratulations to Jason Ralston, Toby and Kain Flynn-Duncombe who selected to trial in the state challenge.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 29 Bradman Cup – (Under 16) Held: Newcastle, 11 - 14 January 2016 Squad: Tane Nunn (c), Pat Rees (vc), Caelen Smith, Jye Phillips, Matt Calder, Harry Magennis, Ryan Castles, Kade Warrington, Liam Mikleus, Wes Van Kempen, Nevan Doig, Jonathan Keyes Officials: Stephen Davies (coach), Aidan Green (assistant Coach), Darren Smith (manager)

Preparation

The team went into the Bradman Cup well prepared after strong performances in the DCA competition reaching the semi-finals playing excellent attacking cricket.

Training attendances throughout the DCA and during Bradman preparation were well attended.

Game 1 v ACT / Southern

Fielding first on a dampish wicket and slow outfield some excellent fielding from Calder and Warrington executing two runouts and with a 3rd run out ACT/Southern were in trouble at 3 for 49 after 15 overs. After a mini fight back from their batters our spinners Smith and Calder put us into a strong position with tight bowling and two wickets each. At 7 for 120 we dropped a vital catch with the partnership costing us 70 runs. Act / Southern finished with 213 from their 50 overs. Anything bowled down leg side was called a wide with our bowlers not adjusting well to the new interpretation bowling 31 wides.

Our run chase started poorly losing early wickets putting pressure on our run rate and middle orders bats. Opener Pat Rees held our innings together with a fine 52 against a strong attack. Ryan Castles with 19 runs batting at 8 was the only other bat reach double figures in what was a poor batting display. We were finally dismissed for 130 in the 42nd over.

ACT / Southern 213 C Smith 2/34, M Calder 2/42 defeated

Illawarra 130 P Rees 52, R Castles 19

Game 2 v Western

Western won the toss and elected to bat first. After an early wicket to Nunn Western batted well until Calder was introduced into the attack with immediate success picking up two wickets and slowing the run rate. Again we couldn’t finish the innings off with a 50 run 8th wicket partnership allowing the western boys to post 216 from their 50 overs.

Batting in hot conditions our run chase started positively with an opening partnership of 49 runs in 11 overs. Our run chase was progressing nicely at 2 for 124 at the 30 over mark. Losing 3 wickets in the 31st over proved costly for us and apart from a mini fight back from Castles and Magennis we were dismissed for 188 runs in the 48th over. 7 of our bats made starts without going on to play a match winning innings.

Western9/216 M Calder 3/33, C Smith 2/35, T Nunn 2/37 defeated

Illawarra 188 C Smith 32, T Nunn 30, P Rees 21, P Rees 20

Game 3 v Riverina

For the third game in a row we were in the field first. Even though we didn’t take early wickets our opening bowlers bowled much better and were unlucky not to pick up wickets. Again our spinners Calder and Smith bowled exceptionally well taking wickets and stalling the run rate. As with the trend of our first two games we failed to close out the innings. Our last 10 overs cost 70 runs with Riverina finishing with 191 runs.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 30 The early loss of Rees and Smith run out in the 12th over brought Nunn and Phillips together. An 86 run partnership put us in a winning position. Batting with a broken thumb Phillips compiled a nice innings of 37 runs before being caught in the covers. Calder joined Nunn playing a short but aggressive inning of 27. Nunn batted deep into our innings scoring a classy 85 runs. After Nunn’s dismissal we panicked losing 5 quick wickets leaving 2 runs to be scored off the last over. With one ball to spare Keys played a classy cut shot for 3 runs for our victory.

Illawarra 9/193 T Nunn 85, J Phillips 37, M Calder 27 defeated

Riverina 9/191 M Calder 2/24, R Castles 2/24, C Smith 1/23, N Doig 1/31

Summary

We played well in patches but lost key moments of games. When bowling our opening overs failed to build pressure and take early wickets. We also didn’t finish off our innings well bowling too short allowing the batsman to get under the ball and hit boundaries. Ground fielding wasn’t consistent with dropped catches proving costly. When batting we didn’t capitalise on starts or bat in partnerships. We lost wickets in blocks which put pressure on our run rate and middle to lower order batsmen.

On the positive Matt Calder and Caelan Smith bowled exceptional well. Nevan Doig in first representative carnival showed good promise with his quicks. Tane Nunn played a significant innings in game 3 with some classy shots. Pat Rees impressed with a great knock against Act / Southern quicks. Jye Phillips and Caelan Smith showed they can bat but need to turn starts into significant scores. Harry Magennis was solid behind the stumps with a great catch and a couple of stumpings.

We lost the toss and asked to field on soft wicket at Exies Oval 2. Brandon Silcox was the pick of our bowlers taking 2/25 off 8 overs. This included a magnificent caught and bowled and a ball resembling Warnie’s ball of the century. Our pace bowlers combined to return tight figures taking a few wickets between them. Until Brandon Silcox again injected himself into the game once more with a direct hit run out. All in all a first up solid effort from the boys however probably about 20 runs more than we would have liked.

Our run chase got off to a terrible start being 2/0 however Flynn Patison and captain James Stojanovski combined to thwart the new ball attack. After getting to 13 Flynn fell trying to improve the run rate. James however continued with Brandon Silcox and the boys put on a further 30 runs together until Brandon fell with the score on 70.

Over the next while James formed partnerships with Aidan Cook and Jayden Zahra-Smith to get us to 141. Unfortunately James then fell himself trying to keep up with the run rate, which had gotten to 7 per over. James ended up with 90, an innings filled with class and one that had gotten us within 20 runs of a target which never seemed likely after being 2/0. In the end we fell 3 runs short. Greg and myself were very proud of the effort shown by the boys.

Round 2 Western 9-160 B Mitchell 53 S Hall 21 B Worsfold 4-24 Illawarra 77 J Phillipson 17, B Mitchell 3-17 M Ashford 2-7 L Mutton 2-9

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 32 We lost the toss again and were asked to field first. James Stoj and Ben Worsfold struck early having Western 2/7 early doors. Ben finished with figures of 4/24 off 8 overs, a fantastic effort. Our bowlers tried hard, however our fielding lacked effort and desire, which meant Western, got to 160 at the end of their 50 overs. Our batting didn’t offer much resistance some players got starts with Ty Kroes and Jamie Phillipson scoring 12 each, however it was a disappointing effort from the boys.

Round 3 Illawarra 6/109 J Stojanovski 41, J Zahra-Smith 34no A Green 3/15 Riverina 108 A Kilby 29 D Bennett 25 F Patison 3/16 B Silcox 3/34 J Phillipson 2/9

After the Western defeat the day before the boys were really keen to prove their worth and put in a good performance to finish the week. Unfortunately however Liam Gervaise was forced to sit out after sustaining a back injury the day before while bowling. Again we lost the toss and were asked to field, however today the fielding and bowling had improved and Riverina struggled for any real momentum throughout their innings. Our spinners did most of the damage with Brandon Silcox taking 3/34 off his 10 overs. Flynn Patison also took 3/16 and Jamie Phillipson took 2/9. James Stoj once again proved his worth with the ball taking 1/4 off 7 overs and Ryan Chard doing a great job taking 1/7 off 5 overs.

We knew that run rate would never be an issue for us in this match however what we did need was a partnership or two. There was some tense moments early being 4/22 but once again James Stoj (41) played superbly and got us back in the match. Jayden Zahra Smith (34) batted with patience and calm to guide us home. For such a young players to show such maturity was fantastic to watch. Both James and Jayden put together an invaluable 62. Once James was dismissed for 41 Jayden finished the job with both Sam Hobson and Ryan Chard.

A great way to finish the tournament for us, however disappointing to not make the final day. Thanks goes to Manager Dave Smith for his efforts throughout the tournament and all the parents for a great week and their help with the boys and scoring each day.

Coaching the under 16s DCA last season was a great experience and something I will look back on for a very long time. I was lucky to have a very talented squad and tried to portray the highest set of skills throughout the players, even if that meant some players not getting much of a go. I understand I copped some criticism for this but one only has to look at the results, crushing victories and the amazing team culture we achieved. I was generally a pretty relaxed coach who gave plenty of encouragement, motivation and genuine belief that Illawarra could compete against other rep sides. Something I had not experienced with (some) Illawarra coaches whilst playing.

All my players showed great respect and maturity for such young men. Overall to get to the semi final and only just go down was a great achievement. I believe we would have defeated Camden in the final if we had made it. I think we need to look after the players in that squad and make sure they are happy and maintain the love for cricket as they will be a great asset to our grade competition for many years to come.

The Illawarra U15's had not won a game for the previous 2 seasons so the goal this year was to win again. We only had 1 win but were very competitive in 4 games and were unlucky not to win in R2 and R3. We had a difficult draw playing ACT away for the 3rd successive year and also drawing the number 1 team North Shore in our cross-over match (again). 3 of the teams that we played against made the finals.

The 2 main areas that let us down was the inability to take early wickets when we bowled and our top order batsmen not going when they got starts. Fielding was of a good standard. The U15 Weblin Shield team took some steps forward this year and are capable of pushing for a finals spot next season with some hard work and further improvement in the off season. Thanks to Chris Collimore for managing the team.

Round 1 vs Camden 25/10/2015 @ Figtree 2 Illawarra 4/153 J Stojanovski 71no, T Kroes 49 Camden 6/157 R Chard 2/17

Illawarra won the toss and decided to bat first, the aim was to bat in partnerships and bat out our overs. We did both adequately. Our score of 4/153 was made with a great partnership between Ty Kroes 49 and skipper James Stojanovski 71*.

The job with the ball didn’t start well as our fast bowlers couldn’t get it right. After 10 overs Camden were 1/61 and well on top. However after afternoon tea our medium pacers and spinners got us back into the game, with Ryan Chard, Liam Harding, Flynn Patison and Ty Kroes dragging things back. We had our chances in the field and although they were tough chances they proved costly in the end as Camden reached the target with an over to spare.

Round 2 vs Bankstown 01/11/2015 @ Walshaw Park Illawarra 133 F Patison 42, R Chard 36no, L Gervaise 17 Bankstown 7/137 R Chard 2/16, J Stojanovski 2/19, L Brown 2/27

Again we won the toss and chose to bat first. However we found ourselves in trouble and lost three big top order wickets in Ty, James and Brandon Silcox. Flynn Patison 42 and Liam Gervaise 17 fought hard to get us back into the game, however we keep losing wickets in clumps which saw us at 8/90 odd. Enter Ryan Chard and Ben Worsfold who did a great job and got us to the 50 overs with a total of 133. Ryan scored 36* and Ben 11.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 42 With a small total to defend early wickets were imperative we took three however they got a partnership together and cruised to within 30 runs of victory. After the tea momentum swung back in our favour and we took four rapid fire wickets. Bankstown won in the end however it wasn’t without a fight. James Stoj, Ryan Chard and Lachlan Brown each took 2 wickets.

Round 3 vs Sutherland 08/11/2015 @ Figtree 2 Illawarra 9/109 T Kroes 63no, R Chard 10 Sutherland 5/111 F Patison 2/22, B Silcox 2/24

For the third week running we batted first and this week just wasn’t meant to be for the Flametrees. Despite a brilliant 63* from Ty Kroes our batting was full of poor decisions and ill discipline. Credit given where it is due, Sutherland bowled well, however we certainly made them look better than what they were. However well done to Ty, his second sizeable score this rep season, the fight and application he showed was nothing short of excellent.

Our bowling again was solid, we took five wickets with spin twins Silcox and Patison taking 2 each. In the end 109 was just too small a target against a side like Sutherland, hopefully we learn from our mistakes. I believe we haven’t been outplayed yet, rather we have lost games which were winnable.

Round 4 vs South Eastern 15/11/2015 @ Booralee Park Illawarra 41 L Gervaise 13 South Eastern 0/43

This game was destroyed by rain and it was credit to all the helpers that a ball was even bowled.

The game reduced to 35 overs per side.

Unfortunately for us we were completely outplayed. South Eastern bowling was outstanding and in tough conditions our batters found it hard to score or gain any momentum. Liam Gervaise top scored with 13, but that was it as we struggled in our 35 overs to make an impact.

They cruised to the target without losing a wicket, unfortunately it was just not our day.

Round 5 vs Penrith 22/11/2015 @ Jamison Park Penrith 9/174 L Brown 3/23, L Harding 1/11, R Chard 1/11, B Worsfold 1/15 Illawarra 8/151 B Silcox 44, L Gervaise 36no, T Kroes 19

For the first time this season we got the chance to bowl first. Unfortunately for us Injury struck early on with Liam Gervaise hurting his back. He managed to get back on the field and took good reflex catch at slip, however his movement was impaired. They started strongly, however a strong middle session from us restricted them to 174, at one stage it was looking like we would be chasing 200. Big Lachie Brown bowled very well and took three wickets.

Our chase got off to great start with partnership between Ty Kroes 19 and Brandon Silcox 44. James Stoj also chipped in with 16 however this where it went downhill and we lost wickets in clumps which denied us a chance of winning the match. Liam Gervaise fought through the pain barrier and scored a hard fought 36*

A frustrating season for us but bright signs with some players showing the class and skill they have.

Hopefully next season will better in terms of results.

The boys had a successful season and developed into a very committed and dedicated team – in every game they participated in they were competitive winning 2 games and losing 3. This season also produced the team’s first win at DCA Level and the boys now realise what is required to win the close games.

The boys improved on all their skill levels during the year and with further hard work and commitment should have a realistic chance at a finals berth in 2016.

The team bonded well and displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the season.

The team were well supported by all parents and a special mention should be made of the Managers for the season – Graham & Sue Phillipson.

Four members of this team were also selected in the Cricket Illawarra Kookaburra Cup Team that travelled to Griffith in Jan 2016. – S.Hobson, M.Garnero, J.Phillipson & J.Zahra-Smith.

This is another example of just how much talent is in this team and with further development and coaching will ensure the future of Cricket Illawarra remains in good hands.

All in all, a very satisfying year and looking forward to further success and development in season 2016.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 46 Under 12 – Alfred James (Presidents) Cup Squad: Callum Cecil (c), Bailey Abela, Mason Broadhead, Hunter O’Donnell, Cody Price, Victor Strange, Jonty Clifford, Jack Kerr, Viliami Mahe, Ben Morrison, Benjamin Needham, Keaton Ridley, Oliver Needham, Lalith Jennepalli, Ryan Roberts Officials: Dan Abela (coach), David Strange (manager)

For the first time, this season Illawarra entered a side in the IDCA Under 12 Alfred James Cup competition (Presidents Cup). The Illawarra Rep Committee who came up with the concept wanted to build a development squad. As such a squad including 8 players who narrowly missed selection in the Under 12 DCA team combined with 4 younger players from this seasons Illawarra Under 11's squad were selected.

The 12 team competition kicked off with games against Manly and North Shore. Unknown to us at that time, but both sides were to go through the competition undefeated and play in the final. Although we were beaten in those first two games the boys most of which had never played a 50 overs one day game before, quickly learned what it takes to win rep games. More importantly they were willing to take advice on and train hard to improve.

There were some excellent individual performances in those games. Captain Callum Cecil had a great double against North Shore top scoring with 28 and taking 4/32. Against Manly the teams youngest player, 9 year old Bailey Abela top scored with 31 and combined with Keaton Ridley (25) for a 50 run 9th wicket partnership. The game also saw the emergence of Jack Kerr (2/21) and his left arm orthodox that would prove so crucial in the teams revival in the weeks ahead.

Desperate for a win we headed to Blacktown, and despite a great knock from Ben Morrison (39), we were restricted to 126. Blacktown started brightly and were cruising at 1/54 off 18 when a lets say interesting "not out" decision on a run out put some fire in the boys. They showed incredible commitment to restrict Blacktown to just 45 runs off the last 32 overs. Jack Kerr (2/15 off 10) led the way with Bailey Abela (2/7 off 5) and Victor Strange (1/8 off 8) playing key roles. Hunter O'Donnell and Keaton Ridley although not taking any wickets also bowled tightly.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 47 With the self belief building the boys backed it up with a comprehensive 9 wicket win over Northern Districts. Victor Strange (2/9), Ben Needham (2/8) and Jack Kerr (2/12) led the way with the ball while Mason Broadhead led the boys home in just the 15th over with 35 not out.

The boys continued the role knocking over the high flying Hornsby side comfortably to make it 3 in a row. Batting first Mason continued his fine form with 47 and Ben Morrison took the score to 6/156 with a fine 34 not out. Jack Kerr again led the attack with 3/15 and was well supported by Ben Needham (2/11). Special mention also to Hunter O'Donnell whose first 4 overs were all maidens as we squeezed Hornsby out for 104.

Following three great wins we had the opportunity to qualify for the 3rd vs 4th playoff game with a win against Penrith (who were sitting one spot above us) in our last pool match. We produced the best batting effort of the campaign posting 7/184 off our 50 overs. Cody Price opened and made 27, youngsters Ollie Needham and Bailey Abela chipped in with 23 and 22, but it was Ben Needham who top scored with 38 and Victor Strange 18* who put on 45 in the last 5 overs to set up the score.

We followed our best batting effort, with probably our worst fielding effort and a series of drop catches made it much closer than it should have been. Needing 5 off 4 balls Jonty Clifford combined with Vilimae Mahe to take the last wicket and send us to the 3rd place play off game. Victor finished a fine double with 3/29 and was well supported by Jonty (2/28) Hunter (2/31) and Bailey (2/13).

Showing just how far they have come, the boys recorded their 5th consecutive win to comfortably defeat NSW Hurricanes and claim 3rd place in the tournament. Mason Broadhead 30 and Ben Needham 29 set up a competitive first innings of 146. The bowlers and fielders then set about producing their most disciplined display of the season bowling the Hurricanes out for 115. Jack Kerr (2/14), Ben Needham (2/20) and Cody Price (2/6) were the main wicket takers.

The season was a fantastic success in every sense of the word. Winning 5 games in a row against Sydney teams is never an easy feat. The most pleasing aspect however was the way the boys came together as a team and how every single player improved during the tournament. They learned what it takes to play rep cricket, but also learned how much fun it can be when a team works hard together.

I would like to thank David Strange the team manager who took on all the admin for season. Glen Broadhead was also a great help as assistant coach. I would also like to thank the entire parent group who enjoyed watching their boys develop over the season but most importantly always provided a great example in terms of the support they showed and the manner in which that support was provided.

I would also like to thank Scott Needham who was always my sounding board particularly in those tight finishes!

As I coached two Illawarra sides this year which was certainly a bigger commitment than I had intended, I would also like to thank my wife Vicky (and daughters Maddie and little Halle) - without their support it just could not have happened.

Wishing everyone a great off season, and look forward to seeing everyone again in 2016/17.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 48 Under 11 – Rep Squad Squad: Angus Campbell, Bailey Abela, Cooper Jenson, Hunter O’Donnell, Jack Yates, Mason Broadhead, Oliver Needham, Regan Smith, Ryan Roberts, Thomas Guistiniani, Victor Strange, William Hoy Officials: Dan Abela (coach), Glen Broadhead (manager)

The under 11’s campaign began way back in July with an eager cohort of 35 kids for the development program.

It was fantastic to see such a large group of kids so enthusiastic about their cricket and it made the job of Pat Nolan and myself as co-ordinators of the development squad a real pleasure.

One of the great things about the 7 week program is that equally, both the boys who gained selection in the Illawarra under 11 squad and those that did not gained a great deal out of the program. The Illawarra Rep Committee should be congratulated for their work in putting the squads together.

Following the trials a final squad of 13 was selected. The Under 11 program is in two parts. The first was trials versus Sutherland and Newcastle and the second was participation in the Ron Arendts Cup in Newcastle in the first week of January.

The boys arrived for their first trial against a very strong Sutherland side not knowing what to expect. Sutherland batted first and made 6/148 off their 50 overs. The effort and spirit displayed by such a young side in their first ever 50 over game was really pleasing. The seam bowlers kept it tight. Victor Strange and Hunter O’Donnell led the attack well. Cooper Jenson picked up two wickets in a tidy spell and all the faster bowlers did a great job against quality opposition.

Our run chase never really got going. Some crucial runouts in the top order combined with some excellent bowling and fielding from Sutherland restricted our chase. Hunter O’Donnell top scored with a determined 25 and combined well with an equally determined Ryan Roberts to boost our score.

The boys continued to train hard and were rewarded with an excellent win over Newcastle the following week. Again bowling first we kept Newcastle to a manageable target of 132. Victor Strange and Ryan Roberts picked up a few early wickets but Newcastle started brightly. It was the introduction of spinners Ollie Needham and Bailey

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 49 Abela that swung the match back in Illawarra’s favour. Both bowled with great control and flight. Both picked up wickets and restricted the runs through the middle overs. Newcastle lost 4 for 18 for the 12 overs they bowled in tandem. The general fielding of the entire group was top class again.

Some early lusty blows from Will Hoy followed by a fine 3rd wicket partnership between Ollie Needham and Mason Broadhead set up a comfortable win for the boys. Ollie top scored retiring on 27 topping off a fine all round performance.

The team continued training from October to early January for the eagerly awaited trip to Newcastle. A cast and crew of 47 including family members checked in to The Executive Inn Newcastle with the boys ready to tear into 4 days of non-stop cricket.

Unfortunately the trip coincided with one of the biggest down pours seen in Newcastle. I knew we were in trouble on day 2 when I woke up and flicked on the Today Show and they were crossing to an interviewer standing in flood waters 2km from our hotel!

I still shake my head thinking about it but not a ball was bowled in the entire carnival. Very disappointing for the boys. There was so much rain that a planned indoor tournament on the third day was washed out due to flooding!

Despite the disappointment the trip still served some useful lessons that will hold the boys in good stead for the future. We had some good indoor training sessions including some video analysis and also played an indoor tournament against some the Sydney teams that were at the carnival. Although obviously a modified game, it gave the boys the confidence to know they can compete and win against good opposition.

Most importantly the friendships and team spirit that was built over our training, playing, swimming in the rain and nightly dinners provided great memories and experiences for everyone involved. Given the obvious frustrations with the rain the trip remained a success, in no small part to the outstanding parent group associated with this team.

I would like to thank my manager Glen Broadhead who did a great job organising the squad throughout the year including during the monsoon in Newcastle. I would also like to thank Pat Nolan who ran the development phase with me and was a great source of information and support throughout the season.

I would also like to thank the boys, who showed commitment at every training session and game and represented Illawarra in the manner in which the association can be proud.

I am excited by what lies ahead for these lads.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 51 LOCAL SENIOR COMPETITION In the local senior competition two separate competitions were conducted, Premiership and Twenty20, played in 4 grades between the 10 affiliated clubs. There were 1007 registered senior role players (860 last year) across the 49 teams (42 last year) representing an approximate 17% increase in both player and teams numbers.

The Premiership competitions in 1st and 2nd Grades were conducted as a combination of 2-Day cricket and traditional limited 50-Over formats played across 12 rounds, while the 3rd & 4th Grade Premierships were limited over formats of 50 and 45 overs respectively across 17 rounds. The number of rounds played this season was reduced by 1 for all grades due to Easter being in mid-March. Again a reserve weekend for the 1st and 2nd premiership finals was scheduled for Easter weekend (if required) and a reserve day for all the lower grade finals being the last Sunday before Easter.

The Twenty20 competitions (20 overs per side) were held over 3 days (originally 4 days) having 5 rounds in 2 pools in the top 3 grades with 3 pools in 4th grade. The first day of the T20 competition had to be hastily rescheduled when a clash of dates occurred with the Regional Bash rep team qualifying for its finals series at the SCG.

Although an increase in player and team numbers was recorded, disappointingly there were several forfeits and also a number of teams not playing with the full complement of players in matches. This situation did cause some concerns for the committed clubs, teams & players who were left without a game without prior notice or a very lopsided match. It is strongly suggested as part of the registration and team nomination process, Clubs should seriously consider the number and commitment of players they should sign and require to fulfil their nominated team obligations for the whole season.

Unfortunately a number of judiciary cases were had and match disputes resolved.

On the positive side, it is pleasing to note the club match day administrative requirements improved again on the previous season with only a few fines issued, and the most pleasing fact being no grading infringements recorded. A new initiative was introduced with the Duckworth-Lewis system (via a mobile phone app) to be used across all grades to determine any weather affected limited over matches, replacing the old one-sided average run-rate method. Initial concerns were quickly overcome in the first wet weather match where all lower grades successfully utilised the D/L method and reported it provided a much better match opportunity and outcome. The top 2 grades did not require its use this season.

The season only had a few washed out days in the premiership competition. The T20 semi-finals for all grades were to be conducted at the North Dalton complex to create a carnival atmosphere; however wet weather late in the week caused a quick reschedule to other drier grounds. All T20 finals occurred at North Dalton. Many thanks go to the sponsor with the TV coverage of the 1st and 2nd grade T20 finals via Bar TV into licensed clubs. The premiership final series were held at the traditional best rated venues, while also considering the needs of the junior final series in the congested truncated season.

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2015-16 Page | 63 LOCAL JUNIOR COMPETITION This was a very satisfying season in local Junior Cricket from an Administration viewpoint. Playing numbers were up, washouts were down, committee meetings were well attended, disciplinary matters and scoring disputes were not as time consuming as in recent seasons.

The 2015/16 season saw 63 Illawarra club teams entered for Saturday morning competitions. An increase of 15% over the previous season. Individual player numbers increased from 660 to 763 confirming the 15% increase. But if we also include the Milo in2CRICKET and Milo T20 Blast programs the numbers went from 841 to 1100 – an increase of 30%. I take this as a clear message that the Big Bash (and now the WBBL as well) are bringing in more young kids to our sport. Our big challenge as individual clubs and as an Association we need to plan ahead to cope with these numbers and to ensure that we have an attractive product to offer which keeps as many in the game for as long as we can. Providing options is a big part of this – both continuing to offer a format that brought them to the sport and also providing a competitive development pathway for those who gravitate to the longer format of the game.

Despite some positive signs in the off-season from South Coast in regard to resuming a Combined Comp in the older Age Groups they ultimately chose not to.

The University club were unable to recruit enough players to enter a team in any Age Group so their 5 season long participation in the junior competition has been interrupted.

Last season’s initiative of a Pre-Season Cup was not repeated and we returned to Gala Days being held in the respective Age Groups. The introduction to Hardball cricket stage was revamped this season. What was previously the Under 10 competition became Junior Blast (also known as Junior Hardball). Its upper age limit was relaxed and whilst match scores were recorded on the day League Tables were not maintained. Initial scepticism was thankfully replaced by positive feedback once the season got under way. Many Thanks to the trail-blazing coaches who attended the pre-season meeting, embraced the concept and provided the atmosphere for these new players to get to grips with cricket.

Following the termination of the major sponsorship of the state-wide Weet-Bix Mid-Week T20 Cup that competition was not held this season. A replacement version organised by Cricket NSW and aligned with the Sydney Sixers did not attract enough entries across 4 Associations to be considered viable so we hurriedly arranged a Mid-Week Nines within our own Association. 4 x U16 sides, 8 x U14 sides and 8 x U12 sides took part playing for 4 weeks in November 2015 and 4 weeks in February 2016. Feedback was very positive and we look forward to continuing this format again next season.

The Thirroul Junior Cricket Club formerly changed their name to Northern Districts during the off-season. Despite relinquishing the Club Championship they had a fantastic season entering a record 14 teams, with their U14A team winning both the Premiership and the Gala Day. Wests Illawarra also had a strong presence playing numbers wise entering 12 teams. These 2 clubs are the only ones to have increased their playing numbers when comparing 2015/16 to the halcyon days of season 2009/10 which saw 71 teams entered by Illawarra clubs. They must be doing something right.

5 clubs took out Age Group Major Premierships this season with Dapto (2) being the only multiple winner. Dapto’s 3 Minor Premierships helped them to win the Junior Cricket Club Championship for the first time since 1996/97. Keira had a fine season getting 4 teams to the Finals.

The Milo T20 Blast program had a big increase in playing numbers this season. There was a Northern Hub shared between Helensburgh and Northern Districts, and a Southern Hub involving the other 7 clubs. These programs were held on a Saturday morning to ensure format options for that stage were available – hopefully next season we’ll have enough numbers to run a mid-week program as well.
