What a year! A hat trick of premierships! Our first men’s First Grade Premiership since Richie Benaud, Doug Walters, John Benaud and friends back in 1964/65. Our first ever Women’s Grade Premiership, our top team, the Second Grade, winning convincingly by 10 wickets. And our outstanding Green Shield team pulling off their Premiership undefeated, our first win for 10 years since Sean Abbott and Nick Bertus were in the side! Our club has grown and expanded, and now has three strong and successful arms. Our Men’s teams, Women’s teams, and Academy – each one producing a premiership this year. Who could ask for more? Well okay, our second place in the Club Championships where with just a handful of points, it could so easily have been a club championship win as well. Something to aim for next year! Brenton Cherry and Nick Bertus Scott Copperfield takes the final wicket in the Final breaking records against Bankstown. After making the semi-finals of the Belvidere Cup last year and being regular finalists in T20 and One Day competitions in recent years, our Men’s First Grade made it in to the final of the one-day cup, narrowly missing pulling off that title by just five runs in an agonizing defeat by Sydney University. The experience galvanized the team and the lads extracted revenge with a comprehensive victory in the Major trophy, the three-day Belvidere Cup final. On the back of gutsy batting led by skipper Bertus with 85, and a determined half century from Adam Turrell, a great all-round performance from Sean Abbott with a half century and three wickets, and a man of the match performance from outstanding pace man Scott Copperfield surely the quickest in Sydney, with six intimidating wickets. In the lower grades Jason Coleman lead to third-grade to the minor premiership and Josh Marquez and Mark McLeod lead the fifth-grade all the way to the final highlighting the depth the club currently has. Our Poidevin Gray, the defending premiers, played well only to bow out in the quarter-finals. Our Women’s Second Grade side has improved each year. Three years ago, it was soundly beaten by 10 wickets in the final. Two years ago, it made the final again and narrowly lost a very evenly contested rain affected match. This season, the girls again made the final and produced a comprehensive victory by 10 wickets, courtesy of a spectacular unbeaten opening partnership between centurion Kelsey Miller (124 not out) and Elise Noble (36 not out). An amazing development of the women’s group over this period and culminating in the announcement that next year will see the club fielding its first ever Women’s First Grade side. 8 Our Parramatta Cricket Academy produced a brilliant victory in the Green Shield through a side well led by the impressive Harry King, through what was ultimately a comfortable victory by 4 wickets in the final at the outstanding Merrylands Oval. Harry led from the front with 63 runs and 2 wickets, well supported by Ryan Johns with an even 50. They were pipped for man of the match honours by a brilliant bowling performance from Tyrone Hargreaves with 5/25, showcasing a bright future for this promising left arm quick. Harry King and Tyrone Hargreaves Representative selectors took great note of the young emerging female stars and selected an amazing number of players from the Parramatta squad, led by young Hayley Silver-Holmes who earned a Thunder Rookie contract. Amongst the male players, Jacob workmen and Harry King were recognised by selectors in their age groups. But in probably the only sour note for the season, the New South Wales selectors overlooked staff first graders apart from renewing Sean Abbott’s contracts. Surely Nick versus consistent only outstanding performances with the bat, with the gloves and with his brilliant leadership deserve recognition. As did the 9 outstanding bowling Scott Copperfield and the tremendous first four seasons in first grade of young Tim Ward opening the batting. To what do we owe this great success in 2017–18. People who have not followed our progress closely ask what has happened, what’s changed? To that I say this club has been on the rise for number of years. The core of the men’s first grade side was the same group that won the Green Shield 10 years ago, followed by the Poidevin Gray Shield five years ago. They have consistently made finals in the short forms of cricket and last year semi-finals of the Belvidere Cup. So, it should be no surprise that the boys have finally broken through. I have already reflected on the tremendous year on year improvement in our Second-Grade women’s side. And our Academy goes from strength to strength. It gives young players their best opportunity to succeed in Grade and to achieve representative selection. Our successful Green Shield Squad Tribute must be paid to our captaincy group, each of the team captains has done an outstanding job – probably the best captaincy group we have had for some years. Our coaching staff deserve a tremendous amount of credit with Jason Coleman and Paul Sullivan leading a strong men’s program. Mr. Enthusiasm Ron Tiger Woods leading the women’s program and with the outstanding team of Paul Calvert with Matt Roughan leading the Academy. Our administration is top shelf in each of the Men’s, Women’s and Academy team departments.
