MINNESOTA TWINS

METROPOLITAN - BLOOMINGTON,

/eepreieniin the __flfl I/ic Upper l?ic/we1 The Name... The name of this club is . It is unique, as the only team named after a state instead of a city. The reason unlike all other teams, this one represents more than one city. It, in fact, represents a state and a region, Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, in the American League. A survey last year drama- tized the vastness of the Minnesota Twins market with the revelation that up to 47 per cent of the fans at weekend games came from beyond the metropolitan area surrounding the stadium. The nickname, Twins, is in honor of the two largest cities in the Upper Midwest, the Twin Cities of Minne- apolis and St. Paul. The Place... The home stadium of the Twins is , located in Bloomington, the fourth largest city in the state of Minnesota. Bloomington's popu- lation is in excess of 50,000. Bloomington is in Hen- nepin County and the stadium is approximately 10 miles from the hearts of (Hennepin County) and St. Paul (Ramsey County). Bloomington has no common boundary with either of the Twin Cities. Club Records Because of the transfer of the old Washington Senators to Minnesota in October, 1960, and the creation of a completely new franchise in the Na- tion's Capital, there has been some confusion over the listing of All-Time Club records. In this booklet, All-Time Club records include those of the Wash- ington American League Baseball Club from 1901 through 1960, and those of the 1961 Minnesota Twins, a continuation of the Washington American League Baseball Club. Page Twenty-two Calvin B. Griffith, Twins President CION OF A famous baseball pioneering family, Calvin Robertson Griffith S proved he was a trail blazer himself on October 26, 960. That was the day he opened the Upper Midwest to big league baseball by transferring his Washington Senators to the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Thus, just before his 49th birthday, as president of the newly named Minne- sota Twins, he created and met head-on the biggest challenge of a lifetime full of challenges . - . this one to establish that in the states of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana and western Wisconsin, there are enough fans to justify their claim to big league status. It was a heart-wrench for Mr. Griffith to move his family from the Nations Capital. He had lived there since he was ten years old. Born Calvin Robertson in , he was adopted and brought to Washington by his uncle, Hall of Famer Clark C. Griffith, one of the great old-time pitchers, co-founder of the American League, and patron saint of baseball in the District of Columbia. Uncle Clark deliberately bred Calvin to succeed him as president of the Senators and it's doubtful that any other present team leader had better prepa- ration than the Twins' leader. He began as mascot of the pennant-winning Washington teams of 1924 and '25 and was educated at Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and George Washington University in the Capital City. At Staunton and George Washington, Calvin starred in and played third base, pitched and caught in baseball. At one time, he was sought as a player by the Cubs, who withdrew their bid when his relationship to was revealed. In 1935, Uncle Clark assigned Calvin to a three-year hitch as treasurer and president of the Senators' Chattanooga . From 1930 through '41, he held the same two posts at Charlotte. At Chattanooga and Charlotte, Calvin even had some whirls at managing and proved a two-fisted field leader. His Charlotte clubs won a pennant, barely missed two others and broke attendance records. He helped prepare for the majors such players as Early Wynn, , .lake Early, Jim Bloodworth, , and Bobby Estalella. He married Natalie Niven of Charlotte and they have a son, Clark II, and two daughters, Corinne and Clare. In 1942. Calvin was recalled to Washington to serve as his Uncle Clark's chief lieutenant. He began by operating the club's concessions department at . Then, he was permitted to negotiate the Senators' radio and television contracts. Later, he was given authority to negotiate player trades. On October 27, 1955, Uncle Clark passed away and Calvin inherited the presidency of the Senators five days later. It was a team which had been tied to the second division for nine straight years and had been far outclassed for two decades in the competition for young player talent. charted a vigorous expansion of the team's farm operation and scouting departments. He shortened the home-run distances, creating new long-ball interest by Washington fans. He engineered a series of shrewd trades. He turned the tide. There was an upswing in attendance through his five years at the helm in Washington. The Senators began to land more than their share of the better young ballplayers. The farm system improved. Then came the decision to transfer the Senators to Minnesota, Calvin Griffith at the same time making certain by pledge to Washington fans that there would be a new team to replace his in the Capital City which had been so good to him. Mr. Griffith has brought to Baseball's New Frontier a promising team and an enthusiastic, imaginative crew of young department heads who reflect his own vigor and optimism. A new era has been ushered in by one of baseball's newest pioneers.

Page Twenty-five Manager MELE, Sabath Anthony "Sam" Born January 21, 1923, at Astoria, L. I., N. Y. Height: 6 ft. I in. Weight: 178 lbs. Threw and batted righthanded. Married. Lives in Quincy, Massachusetts. June 23, 1961, was a memorable day in the saga of , the day he realized a lifelong ambition to become a major league man- ager by succeeding at the helm of the Twins. Sam's association with this organization dated back almost ex- actly to 12 years before when on June 13, 1949, he was traded by the Boston Red Sex to the old Washington Senators. A fine glove man who played the outfield and first base equally well, Mele had a fine arm and hit with consistent power. His playing career spanned 10 major league seasons. In 1951, he led the American League in doubles with 36 for Wash- ington. The same year and again in '53 for the White Sox, he led the league's defensively. In fact, in '53 with the Sox, he set a league record for most consecutive errorless games by an out- fielder in a season, 131, handling 212 chances. In 1952, Sam used his bat to tie two major league records by exploding for a home run with two men on base and a triple with the bases loaded in the fourth inning on June 10, the records being, most runs batted in in one inning (6) and most long hits in an inning (2). Sam returned to the old Senators organization in January, 1959, when he was hired as a for the New England territory. On July 3, 1959, when , then a Senators coach, was tapped for the Red Sex managerial post, Mele succeeded him on the Wash- ington coaching staff. It was from that post that Sam advanced to manager. Sam was signed to his first contract by the Boston Red Sex when he was in his third year at New York Univer- sity. He had lettered in basketball as well as baseball. In January, 1949, he wed the former Constance Mary Clemens and the couple now have four children. Quiet but articulate, Sam is adept with the typewriter. During the off-season, he has written a weekly column for a newspaper in Quincy, Mass., and he has a seasonal sports show in the Twin Cities. BAIlEY, Earl Jesse, Jr. Catcher Born in Los Angeles, California, January 5, 1935. Height: 6 ft. Weight: 205 lbs. Bats and throws righthanded. Lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. Winner of the Rawlings Silver Glove as the American League's top fielding catcher two years in a row, Earl last season had the best among all major league working in at least two-thirds of their team's games. Earl also led the Twins in batting and, for the second straight year, he set a club record for homers by a Twins receiver. With 812 putouts, he broke the league record for catchers in a season, the old mark being Phila- delphia's Ossie Schreckengost's 785 in 1905. Obtained from the White Sox along with and cash for Roy Sievers in 1960, Earl has delighted in belting his ex-mates. He hit .333 against them in 1960 and .327 in '61, connecting for seven of his 32 homers since the trade off former batterymates. Short arms and very stubby fingers have been no hindrance to Battey in his climb to stardom. He was such a fine ball-handler as a schoolboy basketball player, the famed Harlem Globetrotters once wanted to sign him. Steady Lenny has now put together two good seasons and the time has come to rank him with the better outfielders in the majors. He has great range in centerfield, hits consistently and with occa- sional power, and is speedy on the bases. He led the Twins in stolen bases last season with 17 (he led the club with 21 in 1960) and in hits and doubles, tying Harmon Killebrew for most triples. His 24-game in May was the longest of the 1961 season. He had more than his share of big days with the bat. In a July 16 doubleheader against Cleveland, Lenny rapped out eight hits, one short of the major league record. On April 18 and on May 25, he had four hits in a game. On July 21, he singled in the winning run in the ninth against Cleveland. His four runs batted in on three hits beat Washington July 26. On August 13, he hit a triple, double and single to help rout the Tigers. Lenny made speeches for the Twins public relations department last winter and built up quite a follow- ing all over Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming. KLLEBREW, Harmon Clayton "Harm" Infielder Boris in Payette, , on June 29, 1936. Height: 5 ft. 11 in. 210 lbs. Throws and bats righthanded. Married. One of baseball's most exciting young figures, Harmon last season achieved personal major league highs in hit total, doubles, triples, homers, runs batted in, batting average and fielding percentage. His 46 homers broke the club record which he previously had shared at 42 with Roy Sievers. Harmon got into the first All-Star Game last season at as a and blasted a homer off 's Mike McCormick. The Idaho Strong Boy finished tied for third in homers, fourth in bases on balls (107) and total bases (328), fifth in runs batted in and (.606), seventh in triples and tenth in runs scored. Around the league's , they're pointing to spots reached by Harmon's tape-measure clouts. Last year, he blasted a 462-foot homer off the green eye-backdrop beyond Metropolitan Stadium's centerfield fence, the ball hitting the corrugated metal at a point 15 feet above the ground. In 1960, he became the first player in 25 years to hit a homer onto the leftfield roof at Detroit. He almost put one out of Baltimore's stadium. His strength comes naturally. His dad, Clay Killebrew, was a great fullback at Millikin College in Illinois and West Virginia Wesleyan. Harmon's grandfather, the original Harmon Clayton Killebrew, was a legendary strongman, reputed to have been the heavyweight wrestling champion of the Illinois detachment of the Union Army during the Civil War. Harmon, himself, was an out- standing high school and received numerous college scholarship offers. He was the first bonus player ever signed by the Twins (then the Senators). Ossie Bluege, then the club's farm director, signed Harmon after a recommendation by the late Sen- ator (Rep., Idaho). In 1959, Killebrew blossomed as the starting third baseman in the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh. He went on to become the second Washington player ever to win the home-run title. He plays third base and first base and was considered an outfield possibility for 1962. Harmon is branching out in the radio and television field in the Twin Cities and is a regu- lar on the WTCN sports broadcasting staff. Married. Lives in Greenbelt, Maryland. Jim goes into the 1962 season only 23 homers short of becoming the most prolific home-run hitter in the history of the club. He goes in with 158 homers with the old Senators and Twins, topped only by Roy Sievers who had 180. If he returns to his old form, Jim will easily pass the Sievers total. Last year, he was winged on the left shoulder by a and never afterward was able to swing freely. As a result, he suffered the worst slump since he became a major leaguer in 1956 and led the American League in triples. In 1960, his 38 homers left him only two short of 's championship total. That season, he had his second straight 100-RBI total. Among Jim's biggest games: the 1955 Southern Association All-Star Game in which he hit four homers; the August, 1956, game in which he walloped Whitey Ford for three homers as President Eisenhower watched; and September 5, 1959, when he homered twice in one inning against Boston and drove in six runs in that inning to tie a major league record, shared, incidentally, by Sam Mele, present manager of the Twins. MINCHER, Donald Ray First Baseman Horn in Huntsville, Ala., on June 2, 1938. Height: 6 ft. 3 in. Weight: 205 lbs. Bats lefthanded and throws righthanded. Married. Mincher came to the Twins' training camp in '62 stamped "ready" to take over as the regular first baseman. After an early trial with the Twins in 161, Don was optioned to Buffalo for more seasoning. There' his fielding perked up and, despite the late start, he finished fifth in the home-run hitting derby. Mincher got especially hot in postseason play. He paced Buffalo to the playoff championship by hitting .343 with four homers and eight runs batted in. His momentum then carried the Bisons to the Little World Series title as he batted .500 against Louisville and hit two more homers. Twice during the regular Bisons season, he socked three homers in one game. Don, then a player, was obtained by the old Senators along with and cash in a pre-1960 swap which sent Roy Sievers to the White Sox. Nearly released when he failed to impress in spring training of 1961, Tony caught fire at Wytheville, not merely leading the Appa- lachian League In batting, but all of professional baseball as well. This accomplishment will win for him a silver Louisville Slugger bat this summer. Tony, who speaks virtually no English but lets his bat do the talking for him, also led the Appalachian Rookie League in hits, total bases (159), runs batted in and sacrifice flies (five). In addition, he threw out more runners than any other outfielder in his league. Then, last winter, Tony led the Twins' St. Petersburg club in batting at .298 and had more hits (51) than any other player in the Florida Instructional League. PASCUAL, Camilo Alberta "Little Potato" Pitcher Born in , Cuba, on January 20, 1934. Throws and bats righthanded. Height: 5 ft. 11 in. Weight: 785 tbs. Married. Considered to be just about the best pitcher in the American League when he's healthy, Camilo felt well enough last season to tie Baltimore's Steve Barber for the major league shutout cham- pionship with eight, and to become this club's first king since Walter Johnson in 1924. Pascual's 221 strikeouts were most by a pitcher on Washington-Minnesota since Hall of Fa.mer Johnson's 228 back in 1916. Three times in 1961, Pascual pitched back - to - back shutouts. His whitewash victims were New York twice (four and six hits), Chicago twice (four and two hits), Cleve- land (eight hits), Kansas City (five hits), Los Angeles (five hits) and Washington (two hits). In six other starts, he yielded two or fewer earned runs. His below-.500 percentage could easily have been turned heavily in his favor with a bit of luck. He was on the losing side in six one-run games. Pascual's eminence as one of the game's premier pitchers is pointed up by the fact that he ranked second In the league in com- plete games (15) and was fourth in , and victories by a righthander. The major league shutout king in 1959 with six, Pascual has pitched 21 shutouts since he came to the American League in 1954. He is topped in his league by only Early Wynn

Page Thirty-nine with 46 shutouts since 1939 and Whitey Ford with 31 since 1950. Pascual's team contributions are manifold. In 1959, he was the league's best hitting pitcher at .302. And from Sept. 19, 1958, until Sept. 3, 1961, he handled 150 straight fielding chances over an 88-game span in errorless fashion. Last season was Cainilo's healthiest; for the first time, he didn't miss a full starting turn. On July 19, he reached a peak by fanning 15 and tying his club record for a nine-inning game. All-Star Game viewers in Boston last summer had a chance to see his crackling curve, the best in baseball. He pitched three hitless, shutout innings in a 1-1 tie. Year Club C W L UP H BB SO R ER ERA

VA?LDESPINO I Hilario Outfielder Born January 14, 1939 in San Jose de las Lajas, Havana, Cuba. Bats and throws lefthanded. Height: 5 ft. 8 in. Weight: 170 tbs. Once described by Havana's respected Bob Maduro as the best ballplayer to come out of Cuba in 20 years, Sandy might be ready to make the grade in the majors. Shaking off an early-season slump at Syracuse last summer, he regained his touch in a late-campaign surge which led Indianapolis to the American Association flag. Sandy hits with occasional power, runs well, is a good flychaser and, with his squatty build and quick starts and stops, is a popular figure with the fans. His two biggest days of 1961 came April 16 when he had four hits, including a game-winning 11th-inning homer against Baltimore, and May 27 when he had five-for-five, including two doubles, against Washington.
