DRURY WATER CARRIERS

NORTH RICHMOND

Greg Jones

It is with a great sense of satisfaction that I write this report sharing our highlights as a Club from the past season. A season that presented its own unique challenges in the CoVID climate which saw the season start a month later than usual and was played under a level of uncertainty – especially in the early rounds, and end with senior competition semis and finals unable to be played due to flooding.

This season we fielded 8 teams from 2nd grade to under 10s, with our 2nd grade team finishing as minor premiers and premiers as the rain played havoc with the semi and final weekends. We should be proud of the fact that most of this side played at least some of their junior with our club. Our teams across the junior competitions performed well even though none played semi-finals.

While across the club there are a number of players who will be recognised for their individual performances at Club and Association level – all of whom are acknowledged later in the yearbook – cricket is a team game with everyone contributing in some way to their team’s success. I’d like to thank you all for your contributions to your team and to the Club during the season.

I’d like to thank all Parents and Carers for getting our junior players to training and to games, and for your support both from the sideline and behind the scenes. In getting around games this season it’s been nice to see the level of support each of our junior teams have had from Parents staying to watch and support.

I’d like to thank our team captains, coaches, managers and scorers for your time and effort in ensuring the season ran smoothly ,and special thanks to Rob Waddington who again this season had the role of Turnbull Oval Curator and ensured each week the best possible turf was prepared for play on what many see as the best turf ground in the Association.

Finally, thank you to each and every member of the Club committee and those who give freely of their time to attend our meetings to ensure we function effectively and efficiently. As our Club grows, so too does the need for additional people to be involved in the running of the Club. We meet on the second Monday each month – watch our Facebook page for meeting dates and feel free to come along and become involved.

We have already started to plan for next season – the Clubs 118th and look forward to seeing you again in 2021-22.

A great start to the season, our Juniors and Seniors warm up match at Turnbull Oval.

Our Woolworths Junior Blasters had a great time in Term 4 2020 learning different skills and games. Once again thanks to Peter for running this for us each week, and we look forward to seeing these kids coming through our Junior teams over the coming years.

Coach: John Bampton

The team was a very young team playing their first year of cricket. While only winning the one game the team was very competitive and had numerous close games. Watching the improvement each week was a real thrill and coaching the kids was great fun. Thanks ki season and play U/10’s again next year where you will all improve even further. Also, thanks to all the parents, without you kids sport can be difficult, everyone was very helpful and full of positive encouragement, which made my job easy. Special mention to Trina for scoring and Grant for help umpiring, much appreciated. Jack – Top run scorer for the team and was a good fast bowler and fielder as well. Loved watching to signals to Darcy at keeper for when you were bowling a slow/spinner. Ruby – Really improved over the year and started batting through the innings without losing her wicket regularly. Unique bowling action when on line was very difficult to play. Keep practising with your brothers and you’ll have a great year next season. Wyatt – Uber enthusiastic and was a great all round cricketer. Will slay them next year! Xavier – Really determined and by the end of the year showed a great batting technique. I think he will go on to be a really good batsmen. Keep practising! Darcy – Great keeper and awesome batting technique. Had the highest score for team right at the end of the season. Will blitz them next year. Thomas B – Bowled and fielded well and his batting improved as the year went on when he started to value his wicket and got behind the ball. Great to see him bat through his balls without losing his wicket a few times late in the season. Big lad will be a great fast bowler and ball striker. Thomas G – Excellent bowling action and was the top wicket taker for the year. Solid bat and his running between wickets improved as the year went on. Going to be a good cricketer Evangeline – Improved as the year went on and played with a lot of emotion. Loved watching the two girls bat together as they really started to click and were determined to score a lot of runs. Will go even better next year. Hamish – Only played a couple games as it clashed with Baseball. Great all round cricketer who would be one of the best in U/11s next year if he was to play.

A great little team assembled at the beginning of the season made up of kids who were either starting their first ever season of club cricket or had one season of U10’s under their belt. They all started to learn and improve from day 1. Each player brought their own brand of cricket to the field and despite not winning a game all season, they all improved immensely throughout the season. Training attendance was great all season, and a great spirit brought to each game. Not many losses were given away easily. A big thanks to the parent group for all their help and support throughout the season at training and games. James- brings a ton of positive energy to each game and training session, always happy to have a go and has improved his game across the season. Ciaran- put in a solid season scoring 42 runs and taking 4 wickets. He worked hard on improving his batting and bowling through the season. Cooper- Coming from a strong pedigree, Cooper had a great first season scoring 71 runs, 3 wickets & a catch. Billy- Billy had a great first season of cricket. He was always ready to play and has shown great improvement throughout the season. Spencer- has had a very successful first season of cricket, showing great abilities all round. In particular, developing his spin bowling. Our highest wicket taker with 13, and a respectable 65 runs along with 4 catches Liam- Our best all-rounder, Liam always brings a level head to games and training and can be relied on get the job done. Lucas- Lucas has built on his u10’s season, showing great ability & improvement in all areas of his game. Always on top of where the game is at, and ready to encourage his team. Daniel- Another first-timer to cricket. To come from struggling to get the ball to the other end of the pitch to being able to consistently bowl full deliveries and hit 50 runs for the season along with 4 wickets is a fantastic achievement! Nicholas- Nick had a fantastic first season of cricket, hitting 53 runs and taking 8 wickets. He will be a great asset to his team next season. Well done to the most improved wooden spooners!

Another unusual season finally got underway after much uncertainty with cricket proving to be a great escape from ever present Covid cloud hanging over our heads. The team carried over 5 players from last years Under 10 Gold and with 3 new faces joining a little bit of settling in was required. We didn’t win as many games as we would have liked and some we lost when we took our foot off the gas at critical times but the boys always worked hard and gave it their best.

The season would highlight has to be the tie with top of the table Pitt Town. The previous time we played them we suffered our worst defeat for the season with Pitt Town taking 22 wickets, scoring 230 runs and restricting us to 70 odd. This time round we batted first and posted a modest 108 but in doing so lost just 3 wickets. Every batsman placed so much importance on their wicket and waited on the loose ball to score clearly frustrating the Pitt Town attack. When it came out turn to bowl wed really hard bowling great line and length and supported each other really well. In the field we held several catches and got some great runouts. In the end we thought we had fallen just short but still walked off with our head high. It was only 5 minutes or so after the game had finished that the scores were being double checked that it was discovered that we had ties the match.

Harry Bampton - Harry showed again that he is a very complete cricketer and rarely has an off day. Harry’s ability to play all round the wicket opens up so many scoring opportunities and his super consistent line and length bowling always sees him amongst the wickets. Great ability in the field and a safe pair of hands are the icing on the cake for Harry.

Flynn Buckingham – Flynn’s bowling continued to improve all season from an already solid base although I don’t think anyone quite understood the run up from the boundary on the hottest day we played….. With the bat Flynn has plenty of ability and an air of cheekiness that I’m sure will one day soon see him ramp or reverse sweep for 6.

Toby Clifton - Toby was a real surprise with the ball this year having picked up considerable pace and accuracy in the off season and at times proving a real handful. Toby’s efforts with the bat were often relied upon in the back end of an innings to steer us home and he almost always delivered.

Connor Cox – Connor worked really hard all year particularly on his bowling and was rewarded with some great wickets at critical times and a lot of improvement by the end of the season. While batting was probably not Connor’s preferred part of the game he gave it his all and always looked to hold up an end.

Hayden Driscoll – Hayden continued on with the bat from where he left off last season with a number of very dominant efforts and towards the back end of the season even started playing some shots on the off side. With the ball Hayden showed some incredible pace and accuracy and will be a real handful in seasons to come and backs this up in the field with one of if not the best arms of any under 11.

Tex Halewood - Tex was another player whose bowling had really come along over winter and had him troubling plenty of the opposition players. Tex continued through the season to show good form with the bat with his shot selections improving every week. His strength on the off side and straight is quite noticeable at an age where many still play predominantly across the line.

Andrew Henderson – Andrew proved a surprise package this season by having his hand up to wicket keep almost every week. After a steady start behind the wickets he went ahead in leaps and bounds and showed some great natural ability. Andrews resolve with the bat and the value he placed on his wicket made him a tough nut to crack for the opposition.

Tristan Mizzi – Tristan was another player who worked hard all year with both bat and ball. His very different bowling style proved a challenge for a number of opposition players and his batting improved through the season which saw him as our regular opener. Tristan’s game awareness also proved valuable and saw him collect a sneaky mankad the first I’ve ever seen in game while umpiring.

Lastly I’d like to say a big thanks to the parents who came along to support the boys each week and especially those who got roped in to scoring.

Coach: Adam Shaw Assistant Coach: Tully Jones

The Under 13’s team was a mix of players from last season's Under 11 Gold, Under 11 Blue, Under 13's, and a couple of new players.

We started the season with new rules and modifications, and quickly learnt this season would be a lot different for those of us that had come from the Level One modified competition. Over time we learnt we needed to value our wicket, and in the field, those 8 wickets are really important.

In a competition where there were some fairly big gaps in overall team ability, our team never gave up and always tried to have fun. There were some tough games, and rules regarding teams that the district need to look at, but our players always played within the spirit of the game.

We started the season with a good win, followed by a few close losses (and a massive one we won’t talk about) but the highlight of the season, first game back after Christmas break, and we managed to make 88, unfortunately being bowled out off the last ball, therefore giving Freemans Reach Maroon an extra 4 overs to bat. In an all -time brilliant bowling and fielding effort by the whole team, we did not need to worry about those overs – FRCC were bowled out for 12 in 8 overs. That game felt real good.

The team was made up of: Darcy – another great season from Darcy, led by example in the field, bowled quick and accurate all season, and batted well when he shook off the pressure and played his natural game.

Elroy – What a year for you Elroy, one of our spin twins! We quickly figured out that players in this competition liked the ball coming onto the bat fast and you regularly picked up wickets at the start of the innings by surprise.

Lachlan – the littlest player with the biggest energy (and mouth!!) Lachlan wanted to do everything, all the time. As a patient batsman, he will love when he can finally play in a format where he can face more balls each week. Also enjoyed bowling, and keeping, and sledging Tul!

Tory – As a younger member of the side, it was a big adjustment, and there were some big opposition players, even when you got injured – you kept coming back and putting in for the team. Also one of our keepers who enjoyed learning more about it.

Richo – An incredible spin bowler – the other half of our Spin Twins, as well as a very handy batsman, always encouraging your team mates on the field.

Ewen – the quiet dark horse of the side. Super quick bowling, big hitting and expert fielding – always putting in 100% for the team.

Abbey – always with a smile on her face – some great shots once she got her eye in. Also enjoyed keeping, and trying to not listen to her brother’s advice from the sidelines.

Amity – solid defence in batting this year, our Under 13’s wall. With confidence you’ll develop more shots and speed in running between the wickets.

Jasper – filled in when your school cricket allowed, would have been great if your predicted duck against FR Gold hadn’t of eventuated – next time plan a 50! A natural leader on and off the field.

Josh – some of the biggest hitting we’ve seen on your day, just need to learn some patience to wait for the right ball. The reluctant bowler, who fooled many a batsman.

Oliver – another solid all round season – good defence in batting, with some lovely shots added in and a very accurate bowler. Another leader of the team.

On behalf of the team, a big thanks to Lisa and Nat for scoring for us, and to all the parents who helped at training and at the games. Finally to the committee, thanks for all the effort that goes in behind the scenes to make sure we’re all able to play each week.

Looking forward to seeing you all next season.

The Under 15’s had a very enjoyable year. We were successful in winning two games and being very competitive in many of the other matches. I would like to acknowledge up front how grateful I was to have the support of Bruce Patterson and Steve Gale who gave up many of their Tuesday and Thursday afternoons assisting in coaching and providing great advice to the boys.

Like the last couple of years the under 15’s contained number of under 13 and 14 players It would be great to think many of the boys will play in the under 15’s again next year and will benefit from the experienced gained this year. Much of our focus this year was directed towards playing as a together as a team rather than individual success. Having said that many of the achieved personal milestones which was also great to be part of.

Archie Fenely was our youngest player and I believe has a great future ahead of him in his cricket. He is developing into an outstanding all-rounder with his medium paced swing bowling, great batting technique and fielding ability.

Ryan Kross, threw himself into his game every week. He is developing both as a bowler and a batsman who was happy to take on the attack going out and running quick singles to help the score board ticking along.

Alex Sullivan always gave his all each week, rallying the team in the field and keeping everyone very focussed. In future years Alex will terrorise batting attacks with his .

Harley Searle played his first year of cricket. I have no doubt Harley will make a real contribution with both bat and ball. I particularly enjoyed watching Harley taking his first wicket. It was greatly deserved.

Matthew Patterson. Matt moved to Queensland halfway through the season. He did a great job as wicket keeper and directing the team around the field. It was a big loss to see him leave.

Isaac Owens. A very big thankyou to Isaac for stepping in as wicket keeper when Matt left for QLD. Isaac did an amazing job as wicket keeper and I am sure has a fine future ahead of him being a wicket keeper - batsman should he choose to.

Torin Cazzonelli, always through himself into his fielding put his body behind the ball every time it came to him. I was delighted to see Torin work on his batting throughout the season. I highlight for me was watching Torin hit his first four in cricket.

Noah Tamayo, by Noah’s lofty standards he had a quiet season with the bat but opened our bowling attach and taking numerous important wickets. His catching and fielding was also outstanding.

Lachlan Wright made a significant contribution with his bowling. He demonstrated to all that medium paced, accurate bowling is very effective against any batting bating attack. I was delighted to watch Lachie take 3-27 against Pitt Town in one of the best bowling spells of the season.

Ryley Abell also came of age with his bowling and had an outstanding season with the ball. He has the ability to swing both a new and old ball. It was a joy to watch Ryley in action and I wish him all the best with his cricket in the years to come.

Oscar Sinclair, as a result of injury and other commitments Oscar only played 3 games with us this year. He scored over 180 runs and was only out once. A true talent and a joy to watch batting.

Jack Crawford and Alex Gale shared the captaincy and made significant contributions with their batting, bowling and fielding through-out the year. Both players are developing into genuine all-rounders and I am looking forward to watching you both develop as young cricketers over the years to come. A big thanks for your support throughout the season.

Finally a big thankyou to all the parents who helped make the 20-21 season the success it was.

What a great fun year we had, everyone got on well and had a laugh which is what 4ths is all about. We were a little unlucky not to make the finals and on our day were capable of beating any side in the competition.

Highlight of the year would be Andrew Driscol’s hundred at Mill park (His first after many years of cricket- obviously there’s a batsmen in there if the grade was right ☺ ) and Steven Gale’s five for (another first, seems age shall not weary them!) both in different games at Mill Park.

My personal favourite innings was Josh Medak’s 43 no, batting up the order he almost got us home but ran out of partners. Best bowling effort would have to be watching Oliver Hunt week in and week out bowl 8 overs complete with an extra over for the no balls for very little runs numerous times. He put everything into each ball and was unlucky not to get more wickets.

The young fellas certainly propped the old boys up especially in the bowling with Alex Gale (21), Jack Crawford (20) and Josh Medak (17) collecting 58 wickets between them. In the batting Andrew Driscol led the way with 337 runs followed by Oliver Hunt (215) and Alex Gale (195). Overall we were probably a batsmen short this year, but I think

Oliver, Alex, Jack, Jackson and Brendan will all improve on this year’s tally next year if they stick with it. (Let’s hope some of us old blokes can improve too) Like all teams not everyone likes getting out and we had a couple items needing replacement, like a helmet which was hit further than a ball and a shiny new GM bat which required some repair work to it for some reason after travelling back to the dressing sheds faster than the owner can run between the wickets….but that’s all just part of the spectacle☺.

Big thanks to Ole Kruger as well for managing the team, Andrew for bringing the BBQ to all the home games and Gorsty for cooking. Also big thanks to all the U15’s boys who filled in during the year – Much appreciated.

How it started…. …how it finished.

This season was an interesting one for 3rd Grade. As a team, one week we’d perform like real contenders , the next as though we were playing cricket for the first time (or the first time in a very, very long time). Our inconsistency saw us finish the season in 5th place in a competition where the bottom 4 teams spent most of the season fighting for positions 3 and 4 on the ladder.

Each week though saw us enjoy an afternoon’s cricket (when not affected by rain, floods and CoVID-19) each other’s company, and some mostly friendly father – son banter.

There were highlights from everyone during the season – some came from the on-field banter, others were personal firsts while others were things that turned a game.

Well done to all of you this season, also many thanks to the players from 4th Grade who helped fill in when we were short, and to Darcy, Jasper and Lachlan from Under 13’s who also filled in for us, Senior cricket awaits all of you – looking forward to another season again in 2021/22.

Our 2019/20 season for 2nd Grade was probably one to forget, and/or bundle up and lock in a compartment in the back of the brain. We were a newly formed side playing throughout a disrupted season of bushfires, flooding, extreme heat waves and COVID-19 and as a team, we found it tough and struggled to gather form and consistency to eventually become wooden spooners.

In hindsight, it was obvious we learnt a lot about the game of cricket following last season’s performance. It was clear as day the boys were determined to show up this season and play good hard cricket. During the off season, we stayed in contact and constantly talked A LOT of cricket, pumping each other up for the next season.

Pre-season approached and the arrival of some fresh faces entered the nets at Turnbull, with the new additions of Clint Carver, Ben Frame and Dylan Wilson providing extra depth and versatility to our team. Fortunately, we managed to sign the boys on 5-year term contracts, with the incentive being quality banter with a good bunch of lads, many pub feeds and beers post-game, and the freedom to turn up and enjoy their brand of cricket.

The season opened up at Richmond Oval with a close victory against Richmond chasing 161 runs with 4 balls to spare. Good start, confidence rose, plenty of smiles were present. At the end of 8 rounds we were undefeated with 6 wins and 2 draws. We struggled at times to build solid partnerships and contribute to a competitive total. On the flip side we proved very early in the season to be a strong bowling unit rolling teams consecutively for 60, 83, 58 and 36.

The next 6 rounds were tough, losing 6 out of 6 games consecutively with injured players. We were unlucky on a few wet weather decisions not resulting in our favour; however, it was obvious the memories from last season started to play on our minds. A repeat of last season, after such a good start, suddenly, we were sitting 5th out of 6 on the ladder.

Our breakthrough game was against an always strong Bligh Park at University Oval where we lost early wickets at 4-27 to all out for 118, thanks to some handy partnerships in the middle order. The discussion prior to taking the field with the ball was a simple one. We have over 100 on the board, lets dominate every and play our best cricket. The bowlers took this into their own hands, with Dan Filmer taking 5-13 off 8 overs to eventually roll Bligh Park for 86. This was the beginning of our premiership journey.

We knew we had to win the remaining games for a chance at 1st spot. The top 5 had 6 points in it, and we had 4 games to play. First game was a draw, that doesn’t help. The next game we rolled Pitt Town for 38, chasing it down in 5 overs… 2 down, let’s get an early beer. The next game was one of our favourite wins of the season, posting 131 for the away side and crawling our way back in the game taking 4-10, winning by 12 runs with 11 balls to spare. Honourable mention to Nick Wood for taking 5-11 off 8 overs against Pitt Town.

Suddenly round 20 approached, we were in 1st position. We were pumped. The result between Bligh Park was the difference between Minor Premiers or a potential 3rd place. Captain’s words before the game, ‘Boys, this is our grand final…dig deep, play hard and let’s bury these guys’ (perhaps some more explicit wording substituted this quote). Bligh Park won the toss and elected to bat, at 0-35 we remained composed and knew that these two wickets were crucial in rolling this team. Clint with the breakthrough wicket of Bremner, sigh of relief within the group. ‘This is it boys, this is where we bury them’. The next 15 overs we took 9-39 to ‘bury’ them for 74. Commonly, in must win games a team would compose themselves and prepare with ‘Let’s take our time boys, we have 40 overs to chase 74!’. After 8 overs we were 2-11, not the most ideal start. The number 3 (Cashy) and number 4 (Benny) approached the crease. I remember approaching Benny and saying ‘G’day mate, you ready?’. His response was priceless and just typically Framey style, ‘Yeah mate always ready, let’s just have some fun and see how we go aye!’ replying with a smile on his face stretching from ear to ear. The confidence instantly grew, and suddenly there was no pressure. The next 6 overs we scored 64 runs chasing 74 in just 16 overs to win the game and the minor premiership. How good is cricket.

The regular season was over and NRCC 2nd grade were Minor Premiers sitting in the box seat for finals. The common rule of ‘first past the post’ resulted in our favour. After consecutive washouts from the torrential rain and floods around the Hawkesbury, our team became 2nd Grade Premiership Winners of the 2020/21 season.

Just to mention, in my 2019/20 season captains report, it concluded to say that we all believed we had what it would take to win the Premiership in 2020/21, and guess what, we bloody won! Congratulations to the entire team, this is well deserved by everyone. We are all pumped for next season and determined to perform at our best. Let’s stick together, keep enjoying our cricket, and keep winning.
