EXECUTIVE REPORTS Chairperson I am extremely proud to present this first annual report on the activities of the Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone. The Zone has performed very well in its inaugural season. We were able to fulfill all our commitments to Country Cricket NSW. This was achieved by an exceptional group of volunteers who were drawn together from four different Associations only months before the season commenced. Throughout the season this group showed wonderful commitment to the Zone. The commitment from all delegates, coaches, managers, scorers and all others appointed to positions was amazing. Of course, forming a new Zone from scratch was not without its problems and there were a few “speed humps” along the way but these were smoothed out by a committed Board. We held our first Country Championship Carnival in Nowra and this was a great success. With an ounce of luck we would have won it. All our representative teams were competitive. In the Districts Competition in Sydney we performed above expectations a result that can be attributed to the wonderful job done by the coaches and managers. The Zone also performed well in the major Country competitions—the Kookaburra and Bradman Cups. Of course, the Zone would not be able to operate as successfully without the financial support of its business partners and Cricket NSW. Cricket NSW via the Zone Grant ($42,000) continues to provide enormous support to all country zones. Our other business partners, Kingsgrove Sports, Dapto Smile Dentist and St George Bank also provided valuable funds that ensure that the Zone can run its programmes successfully. As can be seen from our financials we ran our first season at a loss and all members of the Board realize that this cannot continue. It must be remembered that the formation of the Zone had set-up costs that will not be incurred again. We are also extremely confident of attracting more business partners next season. The Inter District Competition was very successful and is vital to the development of our younger players. It gives them the opportunity to perform at a higher level and vie for selection at the next level of the representative pathway. The Zone also ran some Women’s Competitions, notably the U-14 Thunder Competition and a local girl’s league successfully. As a Zone we look forward to growing Women’s Cricket. It also should be noted that Tahlia Wilson was named the Women’s Country Cricketer of the Year. This is a fantastic achievement and I congratulate her on behalf of the Zone. During the season Cricket NSW has employed a number of new staff throughout the Zone to ensure that the game will grow and progress to new heights in both participation and performance. The success of this initiative will be measured in the coming seasons and will depend on greater consultation and communication between the Zone’s volunteers and the cricket NSW staff. I have deliberately left out mention of individuals as their performances will be noted elsewhere in the Annual Report. However, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the efforts of Glenn Bridge and Jackson Surman. Glenn would be expected to do a great deal of the administrative work as he is the Zone Administrator. Glenn’s contribution to the Zone was far greater than the list of duties detailed in the Zone Administrator’s Job Description. He went way beyond what was expected of him and was a major contributor to the Zone’s successes. Likewise Jackson Surman performed way above expectations. His attention, especially in the finance area was nothing short of amazing. If we had a Volunteer of the Year award Jackson would certainly get my vote.

Finally, I would like to thank all members of the Zone who have supported me as Chairman. I plan to stand again next season if the delegates still think that I am the right person for the position. Ian Hogg, Chairman

Finance GREATER ILLAWARRA CRICKET ZONE INCORPORATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS REPORT FOR YEAR/ENDING 31/05/2020

The following pages of this report contain financial statements for the Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone Incorporated which comprises the statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, statement of financial position/balance sheet, and notes to the financial statements for the year ending 31 May 2020. An audit will be provided to members of the Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone once completed. The previous years audit has been attached for your convenience. Compared with the 2018-19 season, 2019-20 has been a very successful year for Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone financially, particularly due to reduced costs, and generous business partnerships from Oak Flats Bowling & Recreation Club, Kingsgrove Sports, The Fraternity Club, 720 Cricket Academy, and our major sponsor Kookaburra Sports. We thank our business partners for their contributions to Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone in 2019-20, and to Glenn Bridge our Zone Administrator for sourcing these business partners for our zone. These business partners play an important role in ensuring that the zone will be able to sufficiently operate for years to come and provide a pathway for elite cricketers within the Illawarra region. The collection of team nomination fees also helps to alleviate costs associated with Inter-Association representative competitions. It is important to note that the reduced costs in 2019-20 were somewhat a result of cancelled carnivals and competitions which would normally run, meaning such surplus that has been acquired this financial is not reflective of future seasons. I understand for the 2019-20 season, it was particularly gruelling season for all associations, some more so than others particularly with natural disasters and events, and COVID-19 ending seasons for all in mid-March. In the event any of Greater Illawarra’s four associations require financial assistance heading into 2020-21 season, I propose that Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone looks to support them financially with a loan of their equity in the zone if required as we are in a comfortable financial position to do so. If any member of Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone would like a comprehensive profit and loss statement outlining income and expenditure in more detail or a list of receipts and payments, I am more than happy to provide them to you.

Administrator The second season of Greater Illawarra was a lot easier than the first with the support of the 4 associations and our zone delegates & executive. Our zone on field performance improved, with Greater Illawarra reaching the Final of the McDonalds Country Champs, and our zone finishing 3rd in the Hogg/Silver Shield. The season was not without some challenges, the drought caused issues with ground safety, the bushfires caused destruction in the Shoalhaven & Highlands, then Covid-19 interfered with finals series in each association. Season 2019/20 saw the introduction of CNSW Youth Championships, and our zone was split between the Greater Southern Marlins & Illawarra Highlanders. Between them we won 2 competitions with Greater Southern Marlins winning the U/13 age and Illawarra Highlanders winning the U/14 age group. For the first time, the NSW Women’s Regional Bash was held & our Illawarra Flames defeated Orana Outlaws to make their way to the SCG, but we fell short in the Semi Final, but what an amazing thrill for the team. Our inter association girls league also gained traction with more girls playing than the previous year. For the first time, our Plan B Regional Bash teams played each other under lights at NDP, with South Coast Crew defeating Illawarra Flames on the Friday night, but both our teams fell just short in the quest to proceed to the finals at the SCG. This match was live streamed to Greater Illawarra’s Facebook page with 65,000 people viewing the stream. The internal inter association competitions were also a success, but were maybe too drawn out, extending into February in some age groups. Our Junior Inter Association has strengthened in our 2nd season. This season saw the Greater Illawarra Veterans League introduced with 4 teams participating, South Coast, Highlands, Wests Illawarra & Keira White Lions. 2 teams went to Orange for the 50’s tournament from this league. Veterans Cricket is on the rise and we have already been invited to a Central Coast Women’s masters in season 2020/21. Communication from CNSW was a constant challenge to have to deal with. Those who know me are aware that I am a fierce protector of the interests of the 4 associations from any matter that may cause them grief, I will always be there to support the associations in their endeavours. I acknowledge the presence of 6 full time CNSW employees in our zone, however I must remind them I have been a Senior Administrator of cricket for well over a decade and have a lot of support across Illawarra & GIZ, for the way I administer cricket, also given I work a lot of shift work outside of cricket, due to receiving a relatively small honorarium for my work in cricket. For reasons known only to CNSW, they have decided to terminate my contract after spending the last 7 seasons as a popular Zone Administrator My thanks to our business partners for season 2019/20, Kingsgrove Sports, Kookaburra Sports, Fraternity Club & Oak Flats Bowling Club. Most of these will no longer support the zone without my presence as Zone Administrator. Social Media is a key ingredient to getting business partners. For Greater Illawarra: Facebook: 747 followers Instagram: 1500 followers...... both of these portals are gone, into the history pages, both very informative, but unfortunately popularity counts for little. I would like to thank people all over our zone for their support, there are too many to name individually, from Chairperson Ian Hogg, Craig Howsan, Jackson Surman, Grant Tilling for all your hard work for the zone. The administrators of each association, Tahlia Wellington, Craig Kuncio & Dave Yates, yes I hear you and support you. The Presidents of each association, Simon Taufel, Grant Tilling & Craig Howsan, thank you for all your support and work in cricket. And finally to each delegate that attended meetings, thank you for all your support

DELEGATE REPORTS CCNSW The NSW Country Cricket Association had a successful season in 2019-20. This was despite many difficulties in conducting all of our programmes. It was indeed sad that the Kookaburra and Bradman Cups had to be cancelled due to bushfires. There was no realistic alternative. Whilst we all feel for the boys who lost their opportunity to compete in these blue ribbon events we also feel for the volunteers in Cricket Wodonga who put in many hours preparing for these carnivals only to see them cancelled. On the flip side we saw the introduction of the NSW Youth Championships in Dubbo which by all accounts were a great success and credit must go to Mark Cameron and his team for their contribution. Of course we are fortunate to have a number of fantastic sponsors. In particular Cricket NSW who provide about $4 million dollars to the country budget by funding our carnivals, development staff and zone grants. McDonalds and Kookaburra are also a major sponsors of our activities. The Association is also fortunate to have the support from many local councils. Port Stephens Council, Albury City Council, Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Bathurst Regional Council and Dubbo Regional Council all provide some financial support to our many carnivals. Another disappointment for the season was the Annual Country Dinner. This had become the most important social occasion for country administrators around the state and this season it was reconfigured to a much smaller function. I personally believe this change was not a success. Hopefully it will be re-instated to the format in future seasons. As you are aware the COVID-19 virus has had a massive impact on cricket. At the time of writing we are all expecting to have a reduced budget for the coming season. This is primarily due to the fact that Cricket is expected to reduce allocations to the states and territories by 25%. Just which cuts to programmes will be decided at the next Committee of Management Meeting in July. This meeting would normally be held in June but had to be postpones due to the virus. The Cricket NSW offices are now firmly established at Olympic in a much better building than at Moore Park. This change has been greatly appreciated by staff. Cricket NSW has decided to split the role of General Manager Cricket Performance into two roles. Head of Cricket Male and Head of Cricket Female. These roles have been filled by Greg Mail and Leah Poulton respectively. David Moore will take the role of Head of Coaching. During the season Glenn Bridge attended the March Committee of Management Meeting and made a valuable contribution. As usual the success of the Association would not be possible without the efforts of Bruce Whitehouse. He continues to perform at a level that could not be reasonably expected of him. You can be sure that without Bruce’s contribution the CCNSW would not be the leading country cricket association in Australia.

Women’s Zone Representative GIZ FEMALE CRICKET REPORT With Australia hosting the international T20 Women’s World Cup tournament, season 2019/20 shaped up as a great one for female cricket. The first stand-alone WBBL competition in October and November kicked off a long and fruitful season with the focus on female cricket presenting many opportunities locally for girls and women to enjoy playing the sport. Among the highlights for the season was the Illawarra Flames making the semi-finals of the inaugural Womens’ T20 Regional Bash and several local players achieving higher representative honours. Academy The winter Zone Female Academy had good participation and it was pleasing to see a large contingent of up-and- coming girls in the Under 13 age bracket take part; the challenge of course being to keep these girls engaged in cricket for years to come by providing quality playing opportunities in the Zone. Unfortunately wet weather disrupted the end of the Academy season and the preparation for the U15 and U18 Country Championships with trial matches having to be cancelled. U15 and U18 Country Championships – Raymond Terrace, 8-11 October 2019 GIZ were represented in both age divisions at the McDonalds Women’s Country Championships. The U15s fielded a relatively young team and had several players back up in the U18s. Both teams bowed out in the Preliminary Finals. Stand out performers in the Under 18s were Dharmini Chauhan with the bat, Abby Speering with the ball and Tara Rudd in an all-round effort. For the U15s, Taleha Urszulak and Keisha Baldwin led the way with the while India Bellhouse was strong with the bat and in the field. U15 Margaret Peden Shield October-November 2019 A very enthusiastic young team took part in this strong competition and whilst they did not win a game, they won plenty of admiration from the opposition for their tenacity and sportsmanship. Kobi-Lynch Munro led the way with the bat, including a maiden 50, and Keisha Baldwin was the leading bowler. A big thank you to Sunil Vyas for coaching the team. NSW Women’s T20 Regional Bash - 19 October 2019, SCG 21st January 2020 A beneficiary of the T20 World Cup was the inaugural season of the NSW Women’s Regional Bash. The Illawarra Flames represented the region, starting with a dominant win over Orana Outlaws to advance to the finals series at the SCG. The Flames were defeated by eventual runners-up ACT Aces in the semi-final, but what a great experience for the team to play at the SCG. Kayla Burton was the leading run scorer and Naomi Woods the best bowler. Thank you Craig Howsan for coaching the team and Sarah Smithies as manager. U13 Country Championships – Raymond Terrace, 19-20th December 2019 Another benefit of the T20 World Cup was the staging of an Under 13 Country Championships, which provided a great occasion for the younger girls to play together, captained by Annalee Watson. Game time and /bowling duties was shared through the squad of 12 to allow all the girls the chance to perform at this level. The team did not win a game but the efforts were rewarded with five girls selected for Country Thunder in the State Challenge. Thank you Craig Bramble for coaching and Joanne Kelly as manager. U14 Thunder Cup – February 2020 A three game series between the GIZ Flames and GIZ Dolphins (made up of girls from the four associations) consisting of a 40 over match and two T20s. The Flames prevailed 2-1 in a very closely fought competition which should evolve into a true girls Inter-Association Cup in the coming season. Thank you to all the parents who coached, scored and supported this venture. Fraternity Club Women’s T20 League The second season saw five teams take part, with Wollongong Gems the Premiers. It will be great to see more clubs in the Zone get behind this competition and enter a team. 91 registered players took part, and the final was played in front of a large crowd, which was testament to the popularity of the competition. Wollongong Day Surgery Girls League The Girls League attracted some new participants and, again, more clubs entering teams next season across the Zone will benefit the development of female cricket locally. 29 girls registered for the 2019/20 competition which we hope to build on next season.

Zone Academy No report received Zone Umpires 2019-2020 Umpire Report

Introduction: The Greater Illawarra Zone, which stretches from Batemans Bay in the South, to Bowral in the West and to Helensburgh in the North, has four separate Cricket Associations – Highlands, Illawarra, Shoalhaven and South Coast. However, because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, there were no end-of-season Finals played anywhere in the Zone.

Affiliated Umpire Associations within the Zone:

The Greater Illawarra Zone also four Umpire Associations:

• Highlands District Cricket Umpires Association • Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association Inc. • Shoalhaven District Cricket Umpires • South Coast District Cricket Umpires Association.

Each Association is individually affiliated with Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association.

Highlands District Cricket Umpires Association:

President – Richard McHarg Secretary – Angus Humphreys

Umpire numbers: There are twelve members in the Association. However, with just three or four umpires regularly available, only one umpire could be appointed to each 1st Grade match and to some 2nd Grade matches. Local resident and former international umpire, Simon Taufel, continued to officiate when time allowed.

Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association: President – Morgan Prosser Secretary-Treasurer – Barry Moir

T20 Finals appointments:

1st Grade: Jeff Charlesworth and David Cullen 2nd Grade: Barry Ferguson and Jason Leahy (Central Districts CUSA, New Zealand) 3rd Grade: Peter Murphy and John Walker 4th Grade: Brian Druery and Evan Lane

Umpire of the Year: David Cullen Most Improved Umpire: Peter Murphy Umpire numbers:

During the season, there was a pleasing increase in umpire numbers with Greg Behan, Jeff Charlesworth, Ken Doughty, Greg Miles, Peter Murphy, Safdar Rasool and Steve Ward all joining the Association. This brought the total number of active umpires to twenty-three. Unfortunately, however, because of work and other commitments, there was no weekend when everyone was available. Although there were still sufficient numbers for appointments to all matches in 1st and 2nd Grade, most 2nd Grade matches only had one umpire and it was seldom possible to cover many lower Grade fixtures.

GIZ Annual R e p o r t 2 0 1 9 / 20 P a g e 16 | 91

Education and development:

Prior to the season, all those intending to umpire completed an open book examination on the Laws of Cricket and a field craft session was conducted for members. During each monthly meeting, there were discussions about questions on Laws and Playing Conditions, various aspects of field craft and comments made by captains in their match reports.

Season highlights:

In Term 4, the NSW Primary Schools Boys Cricket Championships were played in Wollongong. The appointed umpires were Chris Adams, John Burgoyne (Highlands DCUA), Brian Druery, Barry Ferguson, Evan Lane, John Oliver (South Coast DCUA), Ray Trindall, Frankie Ulcigrai (South Coast DCUA), Steve Ward and Brian Whitehouse.

The third umpire exchange between the NSWCUSA and Illawarra CUA took place in November, with two umpires from each Association being involved. Barry Ferguson and Andrew Still (Illawarra CUA) travelled to Sydney to stand in 2nd Grade matches with Andrew Coates and Bill Massinghham, while Tony Carr and Rick Crocono (NSWCUSA) officiated in Wollongong 1st Grade matches with David Cullen and Neil Findlay. The exchange was highly successful, and a further exchange is planned for next season.

After Christmas, the annual umpire exchange between the Illawarra CUA and New Zealand’s Central Districts CUSA also continued. Jason Leahy travelled from New Zealand to umpire in Wollongong and Barry Ferguson then flew to New Zealand to officiate in two One-Day matches at Ongaonga (Central Hawkes Bay v. Havelock North) and Napier (Women’s Final: Hawkes Bay v. Manawatu). This exchange is now well established and umpires from both Associations have again indicated their desire to participate next season.

Shoalhaven District Cricket Umpires:

President – David Schofield Secretary-Treasurer – Peter Done

One Day / T20 Finals appointments:

1st Grade (One Day): Peter Done and Cathy Russell 2nd Grade (One Day): David Schofield and David Single 3rd Grade (One Day): Darrell Craft and Ian Davidson 4th Grade (One Day): Shawn Higgins and Graham Lowbridge T20 (Turf): Cathy Russell and David Single T20 (Astro): Darrell Craft and Cathy Russell

Umpire of the Year: David Schofield

There are nine members in the Association. However, on average, there were only four umpires available each week to cover the five matches in 1st Grade and 2nd Grade.

A sad note for the Association was the passing of former umpires, Jason Leeuw and Alan Twiner.

South Coast District Cricket Umpires Association:

President – Brad Herbert Secretary – Jackson Surman

One Day / T20 Finals appointments:

1st Grade (One Day): Gary Paget and Frankie Ulcigrai

GIZ Annual R e p o r t 2 0 1 9 / 20 P a g e 17 | 91

1st Grade (T20): Peter Johnson and John Oliver 2nd Grade (T20): Jackson Surman and Frankie Ulcigrai

Umpire of the Year: Frankie Ulcigrai

It has been a challenging season for SCDCUA, with increased unavailability and a fluctuation in membership numbers. While a total of eleven individuals umpired at various times, on average, there were only five umpires available each weekend and, in one Round there were only three umpires, one for each of the 1st Grade matches. Illawarra CUA umpires helped cover some matches when possible.

Two stalwarts of the Association umpired their final South Coast matches during the season, namely Paul Kitson and John Oliver. Community Cricket Report The 2019-20 year has been a very active and productive one for community cricket across the Greater Illawarra Zone. The CNSW Community Cricket staffing uplift implemented in February last year has now completed its first full season and the extra resourcing available locally has already had an impact with increased relationships with clubs evident as well as significant growth achieved in club registrations and schools programs. Importantly, the extra local resourcing has allowed for a greater focus on the transition of school program participants into registering at their local club, generating a ‘participants to players’ philosophy if you like.

Crucially, there has also been growth experienced in club registrations at Cricket Blast, Stage 1 and Stage 2 levels in all associations. This is a significantly positive outcome for all Associations and should be celebrated accordingly.

This season has also presented many challenges for players and volunteers with bushfires, air quality and flood having a significant impact locally before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic forced a closure of the season with finals still to be played. There were also a number of school programs and events which were cancelled due to these natural disasters.

There are also a number of relationship challenges currently within the Zone and greater clarity is still required on the roles and responsibilities of the Zone and CNSW staff as well as the demarcation of duties.

As we emerge from the pandemic leading into the 2020-21 season it will be vitally important that all stakeholders are vigilant and focused on supporting our clubs and their volunteers. Cricket is a vital part of our communities and it is incumbent on all of us involved in the game to continually evolve to ensure we are focused on fulfilling Australian cricket’s purpose – to unite and inspire communities through cricket.

This report provides a summary of community cricket activities throughout the four Associations in the Zone. For ease of reading the document is divided into two sections as per the make up of the two Community Cricket regions in the Zone – Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

Illawarra Region The Illawarra region covers two associations (South Coast DCA & Cricket Illawarra) and nineteen clubs from Helensburgh to Gerringong where we continue to promote cricket and assist volunteers to continue their love of the game. We also manage cricket relationships with 115 schools in this region assisting and delivering a range of program offerings.

This season saw the final stage implementation of Cricket Australia’s Junior Cricket Pathway with Stage 3 being adopted. The region also an increase in Cricket Australia Cricket Blast entry level programs participants. While a slight decrease in registered junior players with age group changes, there was an overall increase in junior teams. Registered senior players numbers have increased as well as an increase in senior teams.

The region has 100% of its clubs endorsed to the Cricket Australia Safeguarding Children Policy.

Woolworths Cricket Blast There was an 18% growth across the region in Woolworths Cricket Blast registrations with several clubs having increased growth in either Junior Blasters and/or Master Blaster programs

This is a great result for all clubs and the volunteers who believe this to be the base to continue the growth and sustainability of their club.

Congratulations to all the coordinators who continue to embrace the entry level programs and deliver a fun an exciting experience for their participants. • Junior Blasters had a 12.29% increase • Master Blaster had a 18.12% increase

GIZ Annual R e p o r t 2 0 1 9 / 20 P a g e 19 | 91

As an example of this growth, Dapto CC had a large increase in their Master Blaster program this season up 140% from last season. Congratulations to Shannon Bond, the junior sub-committee and the coordinators for their drive in growing and delivering their program

• CNSW Community Cricket is currently engaging with Clubs to complete a Club Review & Planning document to better assist them into the future

Shoalhaven Future Directions Project At the end of the 2018/19 season cricket in the Shoalhaven Association was under scrutiny. Various issues were raised including the loss of the Association’s U16 competition in 2018/19, Clubs reporting a decline in the standard of the First Grade competition, a decline in entry level program registrations, a low engagement rate with schools in the area and recent media reports had all contributed to discussions amongst club and community about the direction of cricket in the area. To address these and other concerns and to map a path forward for cricket in the Association, a Steering Committee was established in March 2019 consisting of SDCA Club and Association representatives, CNSW Community Cricket staff and representative’s from Shoalhaven Shire Council.

Over the following 10 months, through nine Club Interviews, 27 Club volunteers and stakeholders attended a Review workshop, many steering committee meetings and on-going association updates the strategy was completed.

This final strategy is an outcome of this process to be owned and delivered collaboratively by the Shoalhaven DCA Executive, member Clubs and CNSW with a vision to unite and inspire the cricket community in the Shoalhaven to grow the game.

The full strategy is available via the Shoalhaven DCA website or via Sean Barrett.

With over 150 registered participants the afternoon activities were complimented with interaction with Sydney Thunder WBBL players and signing sessions. The clinic was a few days prior to the WBBL match in Wollongong at North Dalton Park
