2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is again my pleasure to deliver this report on the 2012-13 season. In doing so I would like to say that this will be my last report as President. As most of you are aware I was elected to the NSW Cricket Board in September and the commitment to this position means that I will step down as President of Illawarra.

The 2012-13 was a successful one for the Association. I believe the Association is in a good position to further its successes in the next few seasons. I base this assessment on the achievements of the Association both on and off the field.

The season began with a trial T20 game between the Sydney Thunder and an Invitational Illawarra XI. This match was a wonderful success and was again able to showcase the wonderful facility we have at North Dalton Park. To all those volunteers who gave up their time to ensure the game was a success I thank you. The Association needs to also thank Gujarat NRE for making the game possible.

The Association is in a sound financial position. This is due to the many organisations that support us financially. Cricket NSW is of course or major financial contributor. Their funding includes the Zone grant, Development Manager, Regional Director of Coaching, Zone Administrator and various carnivals that our representative players participate in. We have also enjoyed financial support from the IMB.

This season the Association moved to a new format for the grade competitions. On the whole I think it has been a success but as with all new initiatives it may take at least one more season to be fine-tuned. Dean Merola was the guiding force behind this change and I believe should be acknowledged for his contribution. The many hours of setting the competition up and the many e-mails that followed during the season meant that Dean put in an enormous amount of time and energy into trying to make it a success.

At the end of the season we had new 1st Grade premiers in Helensburgh. This was truly a dream come true for our northern most club. For 26 years players and officials of the club have dreamt of such a moment. The hard work of the many who have volunteered their services that period were finally realised. Congratulations!

Keira also deserve congratulations on a fantastic season. They are clearly our top club at the moment and won premierships throughout the grades and the Club Championship. Again the people off the field need to be acknowledged for their contribution.

Our representative teams performed well. The Senior team had one poor session in Wagga at the Country Championships and this cost it the chance to defend their title at Orange. The Colts team has not been defeated in two seasons but again were frustrated by bad weather. I believe that we would have one at least one Championship in that time. The Under 19s and under 17’s also performed with credit.

The performance of our representative teams was reflected in the number of players selected in NSW teams. Graeme Batty, Tim Laws, Dale Scifleet and Andrew Hicks were all selected in the NSW Country team that went through the national championships undefeated. We have never had four players selected in this team before. As well as these senior selections we had Ben Chapman and Kyle Brockley selected in the NSW Under 17 team and Tyler Edwards selected in the ACT Under 17 team.

The wonderful win in last season’s Kookaburra Cup was followed up by a win in the Bradman Cup. This double is a fantastic achievement. To Mark Waldock and his players and manager you deserve our warmest congratulations.

Wollongong City Council continues to produce some of the best played on in rural and regional . The for the Thunder game was again a beauty and received favourable comment from players and officials alike. Cricket in Illawarra would certainly suffer without the support of Wollongong City Council.

This Association is indeed fortunate to have a dedicated Zone Administrator in Glyn Stanham. Not many people realise the amount of time that goes into running this Association. Unfortunately some clubs seem to think it is easier for Glyn to do some of their jobs than they do it themselves. This is not on and again I am forced to question club administrators. The amount of money collected in fines this year clearly shows that some clubs need to seriously get their administrations in order.

This season can’t pass without me acknowledging a couple of individuals. Firstly, Denis Veronese was awarded Life Membership. To be awarded this honour it goes without saying that Denis has done an enormous amount for cricket in the Illawarra. The other person that I must mention is Graeme Batty. Graeme has proven to be one of the finest players to play

3 in our competition. He captained NSW Country to an undefeated championship win in Bundaberg. Graeme has now won the Ring Trophy and the Joe Waldock Trophy an impressive five times each and I suspect he is not finished yet.

The Association is also very fortunate to have a Development Manager of the calibre of Paul Brockley. His efforts over many years are bearing fruit that is reflected in the performances of our representative teams especially at the junior level. His job with Cricket is a difficult one when one considers the distances he must travel to carry out his duties. We also need to remember the contribution of Bruce Whitehouse who ensures that our representative programme runs well. His guidance on administrative matters with the zone is also very valuable.

This Association has also been fortunate in having a very proactive Management Committee. Without these people the efficient running of the Association would indeed be under pressure. To each and every one of you I thank you on behalf of the Association for your commitment to making the Association one of the best in Country Cricket.

Finally, I would like to thank my wife Kerrie, she has spent many nights alone this season and without her support I would not have been able to perform the many roles I have in cricket administration. I would like to thank Cricket Illawarra for their support over many years, particularly the last three.

Ian Hogg – President

JUNIOR SUB-COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

The 2012/13 season represented a season of some change in both the junior sub-committee administration and competition formats.

The junior sub-committee administration changed slightly on previous seasons where the responsibility a running the junior competition was further delegated to a smaller competition committee within the overall junior sub-committee. This structure minimised the number of meetings required for all club delegates to attend and allowed matters relating to competitions to be resolved in a more timely and efficient manner. A number of new administrative documents were implemented outlining the necessary junior activities, timings, protocols and responsibilities for all clubs to follow each season into the future. The return to a smaller number of traditional junior general committee meetings of club delegates throughout the season still allowed any major decisions to be made and ratified.

It was pleasing to note that all clubs embraced the changes and more often than not all clubs were represented and club delegates attended the required meetings. Relationships and communications were also enhanced with the South Coast Junior committee.

On the competition side, a number of new initiatives were undertaken and for the most part, the competition flowed seamlessly through a coordinated positive approach by all involved in the game.

Preseason the recommendations of a small sub-committee reviewing the competition formats were adopted. These recommendations (mainly in the younger age groups), were based on feedback from Cricket NSW and designed around the current community lifestyles and increased player participation, endeavouring to maintain and increase player numbers while providing a staged progression path for player enjoyment and development. These changes necessitated a total restructuring and rewrite of the local rules.

Changes in the Under 10 and 11 age groups (Mod Cricket) included the introduction of reduced overs per side (16 & 20 overs respectively) and the corresponding reduction in playing times for game duration. Rules around participation in both and bowling were emphasised. The Under 10s were also reduced to only 8 players in the field.

Quarters Cricket was introduced in the Under 12 and 14B age groups, where although matches may still have been 50 overs per side over two days, the first innings of each team was split and suspended after 25 overs, so each team batted and fielded on the same day each week of a game. A match result was hopefully guaranteed each week and the majority of players being involved.

A new Cricket Australia pilot program – the T20 Blast was introduced in conjunction with, and coordinated by Cricket NSW staff. The T20 Blast was conducted at a central location (North Dalton Park) each Friday afternoon for 8 weeks prior to Christmas as a fore runner to the Big Bash League. This program, mainly for 8 & 9 year olds, was aimed at bridging the gap

4 and providing game style formats filling the void between the club run In2Cricket programs and the structured under 10 cricket. The program was moderately successful with 19 players involved from across the region and probably suffered through its late promotion due to the delayed release of vital program information just prior to the season and program commencing. This program is worth pursuing further next season.

The combined competitions with South Coast Association remained unchanged.

The main junior challenges faced were

1. The trend of the decreasing number of teams with the loss of 8 teams from last season, down to 50 teams across all age groups. The introduction, the general acceptance and the encouraging feedback of the new initiatives above, combined with greater public promotion, will hopefully see improved numbers next season.

2. The impact of Mother Nature (wet weather) at semi-final time, with all semi-finals being totally washed out frustrated many especially the lower placed teams. Fortunately all finals were completed unaffected. Thanks to the Umpires Association for assisting and providing official umpires during the final series.

3. The impact of Keira U14A & U16A teams who qualified for the final of state wide Weetbix Cup competition which clashed with their local semi-final commitments. Special thanks to the South Coast Junior committee and clubs involved, who agreed to the rescheduling of those combined competition semi-finals to allow the Keira boys to live their dream of playing on the . Congratulations to Keira on their Weetbix Cup T20 achievement.

Special mention and many thanks to the junior competition committee for their time, effort and support, and on a job well done undertaking the vital committee roles:

Chair: Neale Benson (CI committee member and junior delegate to CI meetings) Secretary: Erica Redman Treasurer: Marie Oborn Competition Manager: Russell Corby (Corrimal) Result Managers: (Combined competitions U16 A&B, U14A) – Troy Redman (Wests), (U14B & U12) – Russell Corby (Corrimal), (U11 & U10) – Sally Whitehouse (Corrimal) Publicity Manager: Cathy Harding (Balgownie)

The junior presentation was well attended at the Master Builders Club with Andrew Horsley (Keira) as master of ceremonies entertaining the masses with his natural and casual informative approach. Congratulations to all the season competition and individual award winners. (A full list of winners later in the report).

Special thanks to the NMTG group (Brendan Birmingham) who were again the sponsors of the Junior Gala days but unfortunately weather intervened in most age groups, Michael Driscoll (Illawarra Mercury) for his continued support with the junior cricket stories and results regularly appearing in the weekly Junior Sport section of the paper and Dorian Cobb Photography & Design (Dodge) for his support with event photos of junior representative teams and the junior presentation winners.

To all club officials, players, coaches, managers, scorers, parents and anyone associated with junior cricket this season, thank you for the assistance in developing junior cricket in the Illawarra region and best of luck next season.

Neale Benson – Chairperson

Season Launch

The Management Committee made the decision not to have a season launch this season as the attendance from clubs in the past had been poor and did not warrant the expenses incurred in having the launch.

I would like to thank WCC officials Jeff Wearing and Jasmina Pandevski for their support throughout the year. Thanks also to all the curators and staff who assisted in getting us on the field each week.

A special thank you to Owen Rice who again pulls out all the stops to ensure as many games as possible can be played at North Dalton, which includes club, representative and any other fixtures we throw at him. The ground is always in perfect condition.

Colts Carnival

Illawarra hosted the CCNSW Colts from the 26 -28 Jan. Unfortunately the wet weather again played its part. Day one was completed before heavy rain set in and given the bleak weather outlook for the next 2 days a decision by the Committee of Management was to call off the carnival. I would like to thank Paul Brockley (Regional Cricket Manager) and Bruce Whitehouse (CCNSW Coordinator) and all the junior & senior club members who assisted with covers, canteens and setting up of fields.

11 2012/2013 REPRESENTATIVE TEAM REPORTS:

SENIORS:

In season 2012/13 Cricket Illawarra senior representative team participated in the country in Wagga Wagga and played the annual clash with Newcastle.

Our preparation commenced with a 5 week weekly indoor training program, followed by a further 5 weeks of outdoor training. Our preparation was complimented with two T/20 fixtures under lights against Bankstown and Sutherland

Four players Graeme Batty (captain), Tim Laws, Dale Scifleet and Andrew Hicks were selected in the NSW Country team. This was a record number of selections for Illawarra. All the players played a part in NSW winning the national championships. Illawarra Physiotherapist Matt Whalan was also appointed as NSW Country Physio. This is great recognition for Illawarra Representative Cricket

Annual Ewin - Tennant Shield

Newcastle won the toss and elected to bat

In an excellent team performance Illawarra defeated Newcastle by 3 wickets. Newcastle were dismissed for 206 with Illawarra chasing down the runs in the 41st over for the loss of 7 wickets

Cameron Nupier got Illawarra off to a great start claiming a couple of early wickets with his thunderbolts. Troy Yabsley took the wicket honours with 3 from his crafty off spinners. Young Neel Honavar bowled well on his debut against the strong Knights outfit picking up a wicket and troubling the bats with his outswingers

Illawarra chased down the total without anyone going on to make a big score. 5 of the top order made starts with Jonathon Cook top scoring with 34. Other players to contribute included Graeme Batty, Mark Johnson, Joe McDevitt, Michael Stephenson and Troy Yabsley

Country Championships

Game 1: Illawarra defeated Southern

Illawarra won the toss and sent Southern into bat. Southern were soon in trouble with the pace of Cameron Nupier and accuracy of Andrew Hicks claiming early wickets to have Southern reeling at 5 for 23. A small partnership formed until broken by Dale Scifleet. Southern quickly folded to be all out for 117

Cameron Nupier claimed 3 wickets and was well supported by Andrew Hicks, Dale Scifleet and Graeme Batty all picking up 2 wickets

Illawarra knocked the runs off comfortably with skipper Graeme Batty scoring 58 and was well supported by Dale Scifleet with 37

Game 2: Illawarra defeated Riverina

After winning the toss and electing to bat Illawarra's Mark Johnson top scored with a classy 74. Mark was well supported by Dale Scifleet (35), Tim Laws (47) and Michael Stephenson (39). Illawarra finished with 280 runs from 50 overs

In an outstanding performance with the ball Riverina were dismissed for 68. Dale Scifleet and Troy Yabsley each claimed 3 wickets with Andrew Hicks picking up 2

Game 3: Illawarra lost to Western

Winning the toss Illawarra elected to bowl first losing spearhead Cameron Nupier in the first over with a hamstring injury. The boys rallied well with Andrew Hicks bowling 10 overs straight claiming 1 for 5!! Part timer David Studholme picked up 3 wickets and was well supported by Dale Scifleet with 2 wickets. Western finished with 183 from 50 overs

In reply Illawarra lost an early wicket before Graeme Batty and Dale Scifleet put on 50 runs. In a game turner Illawarra lost 3 wickets on 50 and never really recovered. Tim Laws (55) and Michael Stephenson (28) showed some fight but unfortunately we weren't quite good enough falling 25 runs short. This was a disappointing loss considering our dominance in games 1 and 2.

12 Conclusion

I would like to thank my support team of Tom Bozinovski, Matt Whalan and Bill Godwin for your efforts in making our representative campaign a happy and professional one

Also well done to our skipper Graeme Batty for his passion, skill and leading the team

Thanks to the rep committee lead by Mark Johnston for all the support behind the scenes that is required to perform well at representative level

I would like to congratulate Graeme Batty and Michael Stephenson for their selection in the Gong team who played against the Sydney Thunder

UNDER 21 (COLTS):

Unfortunately the Colts carnival for season 2012/13 was washed out after day 1. This was disappointing for the players as they won their first game and were a good show of performing well in the tournament.

Game 1

Illawarra played Western at North Dalton Park

Captain Taun Stanham won the toss and sent Western into bat.

A solid bowling and fielding performance restricted Western to 172 runs. All the bowlers bowled economically with Ryan Holcroft bowling his ten overs for 20 runs. The main wicket taker was newcomer to representative cricket Jed Austin with 2 wickets

Illawarra were excellent in the field capturing three run outs.

After losing a couple of early wickets the McCrae brothers guided Illawarra home with classy knocks - Mitch scoring 45 and Hayden finishing 67 not out

Conclusion

The team has performed exceptionally the last two years only to be denied any chance of winning by rain

NSW Country Championships Raymond Terrace – 26-29th October 2012

The Illawarra 17’s squad was formed in August. The squad of 18 was cut to 12 for the Country Championships. There were high expectations after a solid lead up to the Carnival. We were drawn to play Central North in the first encounter. In what was a highly anticipated match against last season’s Champions our boys came out firing.

We bowled Central North out in 43 overs for 124. Kyle Brockley doing the damage with 4-16 off 10 overs. Well back up by Phil Astill with 3-22 in 7 overs. After losing Nikhil Verma LBW early in the run chase the boys steadied to get the runs comfortably in 43 overs 4 wickets down. Tyler Edwards blast 41 and Dan Constable made a well compiled 40 not out to win the match comfortably.

In the second 50 over a side game it was to be the local derby against Southern. With some notable inclusions the boys knew they were in for a tough contest.

After losing the toss again we were again bowling first on the same ground as the day before. Some very tight bowling and great catching saw the Illawarra boys restrict Southern to 9-157. A total which could have been much lower except for a poor period of bowling of 5 overs late in the innings.

The chase started well with Verma and Jones seeing off the new ball and putting on 30 for the first wicket. But after losing a couple wickets in a row it was Tyler Edwards and Ben Chapman who steadied the ship. After that a couple more wickets were lost cheaply but the damage had been done, with Illawarra coasting to victory in 45 overs with the loss of 6 wickets. Edwards top scored again with 30 and Chapman got 25.

A great start to the tournament with the boys not tested to date. A disappointing factor had been nobody going on with the start.

On day three we saw a change in venue over to King Park no. 3 ground for the two 20/20 games against western and Newcastle. It was a slower & dusty wicket we were confronted with.

After winning the toss and batting the boys struggled to find the middle of the bat and with a steadied loss of wickets it was only Kyle Brockley and Ben Chapman who adapted to the conditions. The other boys didn’t use their feet and were bogged down. We ended up scoring 6-110 off the allotted 20 overs. Chapman ended up top scoring with 32 and Brockley 25.

But the total was short of what was required.

The bowlers did not adapt to the conditions with the ball either and bowled a shorter length than was required and were punished for the poor bowling.

Western ended up getting the runs 3 wickets down. Even with a great catch by Dan Constable at cover it was not to be. Western chased down the runs in 17 overs. A disappointment for the boys as it was only a short period of poor field placements and bowling which had cost Illawarra the game.

In the final match against Newcastle the boys had a point to prove. This time they adapted to the conditions excellently and played a faultless game. After winning the toss Illawarra batted and compiled a well-made 6-176.

There were none better than Dan Constable on his 16th birthday with 40 of the runs. Mitch Jones got Illawarra of to a great start with 31 runs and three others scored 20’s. 14 year old Toby Flynn-Duncombe did a great job late in the innings with 21 off 15 balls. The boys then did the damage with the ball skittling Newcastle for 114. The spin bowlers doing the damage late with Chapman, Astill and Constable taking 2 wickets apiece.

Overall there were 3 comfortable wins and a loss. An encouraging sign was that all of the boys contributed to the results which were one of the major goals this year.

The NSW U/17 Country side was named after the last game. Ben Chapman was named Captain while Tyler Edwards and Kyle Brockley were also selected for their efforts.

Although we were disappointed with losing a game it was a successful Carnival for the Illawarra side. A second placing was an adequate achievement for these boys. With the boys only being tested for a limited amount of time during all games, the pressure in those overs told as it ended up costing the Illawarra the Country title. A learning experience for all the players as

14 there was no doubting the ability level of this team. They will take this experience back to their clubs and will be better players for it.

It was a pleasure to coach these boys for the last few months. They showed a lot of commitment and enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and improve. They were a credit to their parents, clubs and the association in the way they prepared and conducted themselves for the entire Championships. It was clear to see that Illawarra are becoming the benchmark in Regional Cricket with the professional approach and environment which has been created.

I would like to thank Rod Duncombe, the best team Manager I have experienced in team sport. He had every base covered, Mark Waldock, for the preparation and organisation he puts in to the Illawarra junior teams and Cricket Illawarra for the opportunity to Coach the U/17 side in 2012.

Team: Phillip Astill, Sam Benson, Kyle Brockley, Ben Chapman, Daniel Constable, Tyler Edwards, Toby Flynn-Duncombe, Mitchell Jones, Thomas McDevitt, Oscar Corby, Thomas O’Brien, Nikhil Verma.

BRADMAN CUP (UNDER 16):

The 2012/2013 Bradman Cup was hosted by the Southern Zone and played in the Nowra area. Illawarra field what is believed to be the youngest side with only two of the players being under 16 age with the remaining players all under 15 age group. Expectations were very high from this group given the previous year’s Kookaburra Cup results-

The squad was-

Daniel Constable (Keira) (captain), Phillip Astill (Helensburgh) Kain Flynn-Duncombe (Wollongong) Callum Waldock (Wests) Reece Nikitaras (Wests) Raman Wadhwa (Wests) Brody O’Brien (Wests), Mitchell Philips (Wests), Aaryn Kornberger (Wests), Anthony Purdevski (Wests) Toby Dodds (Wollongong), Toby Flynn-Duncombe (Wollongong) - Coach Mark Waldock & Manager Rod Duncombe

Game 1- Monday 7 January 2013 v North Coastal

Winning the toss, Daniel Constable had no hesitation in batting on a pitch that had a hint of green and unknown quantities. A super 50 to Callum Waldock saw the scoreboard ticking over nicely. Contributions from Constable (26), Toby Flynn Duncombe (38) and Kain Flynn Duncombe (23 not out) saw us reach a reasonable total of 197.

In reply, North Coast could only manage 134 with Kain Flynn Duncombe the pick of the bowlers with 4/23. Mitchell Phillips was next best with 2/21 with one each to the remaining bowlers. A great start to our Bradman Cup to our campaign by the boys.

Game 2- Tuesday 8 January 2013 v Western

On a day of extreme heat of 43 degrees, the game was reduced to 30 overs. Again we were good enough to win the toss with Constable choosing to bat. After losing Waldock early, Constable and Toby Flynn Duncombe mirrored the day with some hot batting and both scoring 64. Aaryn Kornberger chipped in with available 44 and the total was 6/207.

Not to be outdone, opening bowler Mitchell Phillips kept the heat up on the Western batsman taking career best rep figures of 5/30 including a memorable hat trick. Kain Flynn Duncombe continued his good form with the ball taking 2/14, Anthony Purdevski and Toby Flynn Duncombe taking one each. Despite a gallant chase in trying conditions, Illawarra were too good for Western dismissing them for 162.

Game 3- Wednesday 9 January 2013 v Newcastle

A win in this game would secure a berth in the final. Newcastle as a team had shown little form and maybe the boys were one step ahead of themselves.

To Newcastle’s credit they posted a respectable 9/176 bating first and this was certainly not a total that should have fazed us. Anthony Purdevski the pick of the bowlers with 3/20 supported well by Phillip Astill 2/22 Phillips 2/30 and Brody O’Brien taking tow behind the stumps.

15 Our batting lacked conviction, Waldock 31 and Constable 35 got us off to a good start however once they were gone the rest of the wickets fell quickly and without a lot resistance. The end result we were bowled out for 142.

This result put us in some minor doubt over finals berth however the cricket gods were kind to us on this day and we rolled on into the final.

Thursday 10 January 2013 v Central Northern

Our opponents in the final were a very well-credentialed and fancied Central Northern. Being the younger side that we were, reputations meant nothing to our side.

Winning the toss, Constable elected to bat. He was however at the crease a lot earlier than he would have expected. After surviving an early scare, Constable formed a short partnership with Toby Flynn Duncombe (17) but after he skied one, we were 3/43 and in a bit of trouble. Kornberger was next in and like Constable; he shrugged off two dropped chances. The result was both Constable and Kornberger made our opponents regret their mistakes. A partnership of 106 saw us back in the games with Constable scoring 73 and Kornberger 56. Raman Wadhwa chipped in with handy 14 and we posted a respectable 188. As Coach Waldock always says- “Runs on the board in a final, we’ve got them and they had to get them!”

How true Waldock comments would be.

Purdevski struck first with the prized wicket of Max Houlahan for 0 and excitement was building in the Illawarra camp. It was however short lived with a partnership of 65 building. That was until a brilliant piece of fielding from Phillips turned the game in our favour. Phillips direct hit to see the runout of Park for 43 started the building of pressure that Central Northern just couldn’t cope with. Astill snared the other prized wicket of Psarakis without bothering the scorers and Astill led the charge taking 3/18 in a spell of 10 over that laid a platform for what was fact becoming a memorable for the team. Kain Flynn- Duncombe also finished with 3/36 and Kornberger 1/27.

A gigantic effort from a very young team who took the oppositions reputation in their stride and playing as a team came up with the trophy.

State Cup Challenge- Sunday 17 February 2013 v Fairfield Liverpool

For some it was their second trip to the hallowed turf of the SCG, for other it was their first. It was equally exciting for all.

We won the toss. Our openers of Waldock (24) and Constable (50) laid a solid platform however crucial run outs to Aaryn Kornberger and Toby Flynn-Duncombe saw the game turn in the favour of our opponents. Reece Nikitaras chipped in with a handy 16 before also being run out. Wadhwa finishing 8 not out. Illawarra posting a total of 6/125.

The boys never say die attitude came to the fore in defending a disappointing total. The Fairfield-Liverpool openers were 50 without loss when Wadhwa executed some fielding brilliance to force a runout. This was followed by a wicket to Kain Flynn Duncombe and well executed and bowled to Constable to have the opposition at 3/75 from 0/50. Some tight bowling from Toby Dodds saw Fairfield-Liverpool using many balls for not many runs. In the end out total proved to be a bit skinny and the Fairfield-Liverpool side being winners with one ball to spare.

Overall it was a coach and managers delight to be involved with such a fantastic group of cricketers. The efforts of the our younger players coupled with the guidance and maturity from Daniel Constable & Phillip Astill our two senior players, for what was a great team result in both the Bradman Cup and an exciting finish in the State Challenge. A special thanks to all the parents and fans for their support during the Bradman Cup and our experience at the SCG.

We look forward to seeing all the boys back again next season.

UNDER 16:

The U16 Watson Shield squad commenced training in late August with a small squad of players. The group trained both at North Wollongong Indoor Centre and at Keira Oval nets. I attempted to increase the squad by ringing a number of players and clubs but found little interest. This meant every boy that wanted to play in the Watson Shield did so. I was capably assisted in this period by Bruce Jones who provided video analysis of the players and Joe Ucles.

16 Trial games were played against a Keira U21 team, Gosford, and the Illawarra U15 team. The team struggled in all of those games and it was evident that the team was going to struggle in the Watson Shield.

The Watson Shield commenced with a home fixture against Canterbury Wests at Keira Oval. Illawarra batted first and was bundled out for 63 with captain Daniel Constable scoring 24. The team faced a very strong Canterbury Wests attack who swung the ball at good pace. Canterbury Wests had a couple of early scares before passing the modest score and rattling up 7/200 before declaring. Nic Bagaric bowled well to take 4/41. Illawarra had some nervous moments in avoiding outright defeat, finishing at 8/141. Keiran Richards made a good 43.

Round 2 saw the team travel to the picturesque Barker College to take on Hornsby. In perfect batting conditions Illawarra went from 0/27 to all out of 87. Jacob Murphy made 30 not out. This score was easily passed by Hornsby who scored 4/258 before declaring. With only 30 odd overs left in the day I was reasonably confident the boys could stave off the outright, but unfortunately I was proved wrong and the boys were bundled out for 74. Nic Bagaric made a useful 28. I was very disappointed with this display and told the boys in the dressing room afterwards. Driving back from Hornsby after losing outright is not a pleasant experience!!

They say a week is a long time in politics, and the same could be said for coaching the Watson Shield team. After the thrashing at Hornsby the next game was away at Jensen Park against Bankstown. The home team batted first and were dismissed for a paltry 96, with Ryan Lappin 3/34 the main wicket taker and two wickets each to Aaron Llatse, Bagaric and Constable. Illawarra got off to a nervous start before captain Constable took charge of the match crunching the ball to all parts. Dan finished with a fine 154 not out, surely one of the highest individual scores in Illawarra’s DCA history. With solid support from Llatse (27) the score was passed for the loss of four wickets. The boys batted on and declared at 8/243 (off just 39.4 overs) and put the home team in. The message to the team was a Craig McDermott style “bowl straight and pitch it up”, and whenever this happened the Bankstown batsmen showed very flimsy defence. They were mopped up for 73 with Dylan Murphy and Phillip Astill each taking 3 wickets. A win at last!!

Round 4 saw the team back at Keira Oval to face Sutherland who had not won a game. Batting first, Illawarra made a disappointing 143, after a number of batsmen did the hard yards in getting a start. Constable top scored with 30. I felt that 180 would have been plenty on the slow outfield. Sutherland found runs hard to come by and batted very carefully in the chase. They were doing it reasonably comfortably without getting on top. Then a flurry of wickets after tea set up a very tight finish, and they passed the score 8 wickets down in the 58th over. This was a good bowling performance with Dylan Murphy taking 4/17 and two wickets apiece to Daniel Silcox and Astill.

The final round saw the team travel to Manly to take on the Silvertails. I had passed the coaching duties to manager Paul Constable as I had commitments with the Gilchrist fund-raiser at UOW. I could not believe the text message I received from stand-in coach Constable which read “Manly 5/5 off 5 overs’. I had never seen or heard of such a score in any match I had played in, watched or read about. Manly recovered from the precarious position of 7 for 41 to make 102 all out. Captain Constable took 4/15 off his 12 overs. Unfortunately this proved too much for the boys who were dismissed for 58.

This was my first coaching experience of a junior representative team and I would like to congratulate all the boys on the way they conducted themselves and behaved. They were a good bunch of young guys. A lot of them were out of their depth at this level and that reflected in the results; however that does not mean they can’t continue to develop their games and go on and become good senior players. A number of the boys were playing in the local U16B competition and even those playing in the local U16A competition commented that playing on turf against the better Sydney sides was a massive step up in quality.

I was part of the selection committee that picked the Bradman Cup Squad and it was unusual that only two boys from the U16 team made that side, those boys being Daniel Constable and Phillip Astill. However anomalous that was, the fact that Illawarra won the Bradman Cup in January with a team made up primarily of the U15 team showed that the selectors got it right. One or two of the boys from the U16s could have made a case for selection if they’d performed better in the Watson Shield.

I would like to thank Paul Constable for being a reliable Manager and stand-in coach. Thanks again to Bruce Jones and Joe Ucles for their assistance in the pre-season. Thanks to Terry Silcox for scoring, and thanks to the other parents for assisting with the afternoon teas and bbqs at the home games.

I wish all the players the very best for their future careers.

The Watson Shield squad was:

17 Daniel Constable (captain), Aaron Llatse, Dylan Murphy, Jacob Murphy, Daniel Silcox, Keiran Richards (Keira), Phillip Astill (Helensburgh), Bryce Causero (Thirroul), Jacob Osborne, Ryan Jones (Corrimal), Blake Owen, Ryan Lappin (Wollongong) and Nic Bagaric (Wests).

Mark Johnston – Coach

UNDER 15:

After the success of the previous season and a solid preseason with some dominate trial game performances the under 15 Weblin Shield squad were ready and looking to make the finals for the first time. The 2012/2013 squad was:-

Kain Flynn-Duncombe (Capt. - Wollongong) Callum Waldock (Wests) Reece Nikitaras (Wests) Raman Wadhwa (Wests) Brody O’Brien (Wests), Mitchell Philips (Wests), Aaryn Kornberger (Wests), Anthony Purdevski (Wests) Toby Dodds (Wollongong), Toby Flynn-Duncombe (Wollongong) Shay Brady (Helensburgh) Kyle Booth (Keira) and Declan Cardona (Balgownie) - Coach Mark Waldock

Game 1- Sunday 21 October 2012 v Northern Districts

After snaring the first wicket for just 13 runs, the team’s intensity fell away as did our fielding and the opposition were 1/114. The Flynn-Duncombe attack then unleashed with Toby Flynn-Duncombe snaring his first rep 5 wicket haul (5/31) and Kain Flynn-Duncombe supporting with (2/15). Waldock was tidy with 1/10 and Phillips and Dodds chipped in with one each. O’Brien took two catches.

Our batting unfortunately let us down with wickets falling at regular intervals. Wadhwa the pick of the batting left stranded on 48, Toby Dodds showing improvement over the off season with his highest rep score of 20 and Kain Flynn-Duncombe (27)

With a 23 run loss with 10 overs to go, not the desired result.

Game 2- Sunday 29 October 2012 v Manly-Warringah

With the boys keen to avenge the first round loss, we won the toss and elected to bat.

The opening pair of Nikitaras and Waldock put on 134 before Waldock exited with a stylish 102 off 114 balls. Nikitaras scored 30 before losing his wicket followed by Kornberger and our good start was now 3/141. Up stepped the Captain Kain Flynn-Duncombe with 50 off 47, Todds (25), Wadhwa (17) and Brady (12) all handy contributions.

Kain Flynn Duncombe and Phillips opened the bowling with Kain taking the first three wickets and the visitors were 3/6. Our bowling attached was relentless with Booth then stepping up with 3/7 and Cadona taking 2/0 off his 2 overs. Dodds and Purdevski chipped in with the other two wickets.

Sending the visitors back in, the bowling attack continued however we could only get 7 wickets, Phillips the best of the bowlers with 2/7 with the other bowlers sharing the spoils delivering a convincing win to the boys.

Round 3 – Sunday 4 November 2012 v South Eastern

Another toss and there was no hesitation in batting on an absolute belter despite the outfield being long after being top dressed.

After losing one early, Kornberger and Waldock went about their business in a tradesman like fashion. With Waldock making quick-fire 33 off 54 whilst Kornberger chipped away with his season high score of 76. Kain Flynn- Duncombe continued with his flowing runs with a 40 whist Toby Flynn- Duncombe scored a rapid 55 not out of only 50 balls and Wadhwa contributing with a valuable 17.

Phillips steamed in with Purdeski and Phillips getting the early breakthrough. The bowling spoils were shared between Purdevski, Dodds, Kain Flynn- Duncombe and Toby Flynn-Duncombe all taking two wickets each.

Good performance across the board delivering a comfortable victory, bowling the opposition out for 129 chasing our 227.

Round 4- Sunday 11 November 2012

18 After losing the toss at home and being sent into the field, we were quickly given a lesson on paying for poor bowling and fielding. With the Parramatta top batsman scoring 128 and us dropping him at regular intervals we were chasing 256, a score we had never chased down previously. Pick of the bowlers was Kyle Booth with 3/36 with Toby Flynn- Duncombe and Kain Flynn- Duncombe taking two each. We have a mammoth task ahead to keep our season alive!

After losing Waldock early, Kornberger and Toby Flynn- Duncombe stepped up to the plate with a 118 partnership until Kornberger went for 57. Toby was then joined by Kain Flynn- Duncombe and added 62 before Kain fell for 14. Enter Reece Nikitaras in the uncustomary role of number. Nikitaras was about to let anyone down and with a giant smile he added 24 off 33 balls and in a final partnership with Toby Flynn- Duncombe of 62, the pair steered the team to a memorable victory. Toby Flynn- Duncombe finishing on 135 not out off 138 balls.

A gutsy team win and our season was still alive.

Round 5- Sunday 18 November 2012

Despite our solid efforts we were still under the pump to make the semi-finals and nothing more than a win would allow this to happen.

After winning the toss we lost wickets at regular intervals slumping to 4/43. Nikitaras continued his form scoring his season high score of 62 and digging the team out of one almighty hole. Contributions by Kornberger (23), Wadhwa (22), and a priceless partnership from Dodds (20 no) and Purdevski (14 no) allowed us to post a reasonable total.

Purdevski was not finished there, he unleashed with the ball taking his best rep figures of 6/29 and steering the team to victory in the face of what could have possibly been a defeat. Kain Flynn- Duncombe supported with 2/16 with Wadhwa and Booth taking the remaining wickets.

Quarter Final Sunday 25 November 2012

Finally, a finals berth to the team!

Losing the toss we failed to take wickets early and fielding was not as sharp as was needed. Kain Flynn- Duncombe the pick of the bowlers with 3/14 supported by Callum Waldock, Toby Flynn- Duncombe and Toby Dodds with two each. Nonetheless we restricted the visitors to only 145 and we were right in the hunt.

We did however leave out worst batting performance to last. Only Waldock (13), Phillips (14) and Purdevski offered any resistance and we were rolled for just 109.

On reflection it could be viewed as another year of possibly underachieving, but in saying that this it was a year with many personal achievements with many of the players showing vast improvement from the previous year.

Special thanks to Chris Brady for his usual impeccable scoring ever game and all the players parents for their support throughout the NSWDCA campaign and we look forward to seeing all the boys back next season.

Rod Duncombe – Manager & Mark Waldock – Coach

UNDER 14:

After making the Semi Finals of the DCA last season the team felt confident of a strong performance this season. There were four changes this year to the previous year’s team.

The team consisted of Gyan Wijekulasuriya(c), Tyson Barrett, Noah Butler, Logan Clements, Billy Dean, Charlie Eaton, Saxon Forrest, Nicholas Henderson, Adrian Ladic, Jason Ralston, Daine Richards, Kyle Trebel, and Dylan Welsh.

Round 1 Sunday 21 Oct 2012 Central Coast V Illawarra @ EDSAAC North

Illawarra won the Toss and decided to Bat first. The openers put on 32 before Illawarra lost their 1st wicket. The top order struggled with Central Coast bowling good areas and fielding exceptionally well. At 25 over’s Illawarra where 4-70. Some positive batting by the bottom order, saw Illawarra scratch out a competitive total of 149 from their 50 Over’s.

19 The Illawarra boys at lunch discussed how important a good start would be to set up a platform for a good result. The opening bowlers bowled too short and after 5 over’s Central Coast raced to 0-40. With a change in bowling, Tyson Barrett and Jason Ralston took 2 quick wickets each and had Central Coast 4- 72 off 12 overs. Central Coast kept batting positively and after 20 over’s they were 6-110. Illawarra needed 4 wickets, Central Coast needed 39 runs. Illawarra’s bowlers struggled to build any pressure and Central Coast cruised to victory not losing another wicket and passing Illawarra in the 29th over, 6- 151.

Batting: Daine Richards 26, Nick Henderson 24 Bowling: Tyson Barrett 2/20, Charlie Eaton 2/24

Round 2 Sunday 28 Oct 2012 Illawarra V Fairfield-Liverpool @ Figtree No 2

Illawarra won the Toss and decided to Bat first. Illawarra lost their 1st wicket for 31. Daine Richards came to the crease and produced a great hard working innings. After 25 over’s Illawarra were 1-74. Daine was eventually dismissed for hard working 63. Logan Clements continued the strong batting efforts for Illawarra with a memorable innings hitting 6 fours, and 3 huge sixes in an innings of 75not out allowing Illawarra to reach 4-201 of their 50 overs.

Fairfield/Liverpool started their innings steady but extremely slow, and after 15 over’s they were 1-27. Illawarra’s captain Gyan decided to bring some spin into the attack and got results instantly. Tyson Barrett went on to take 4-16 off 10 overs. The Illawarra boys continued with what they discussed prior to them bowling and kept with a defensive structure and strangled Fairfield to finish 7-95 off their 50 overs.

A great win and most pleasing was the boys had executed the plans they made pre match.

Batting: Logan Clements 75 Not Out, Daine Richards 63 Bowling: Tyson Barrett 4/16 off 10 Over’s, Jason Ralston 1/5 off 10 Over’s

Round 3 Sunday 4 Nov 2012 Bankstown V Illawarra @ Gordon Parker Reserve

Travelling to Bankstown, without our main wicket keeper/Opening Batsman Noah Butler due to injury, Nick Henderson took over as keeper and Dylan Welsh stepped up to open the batting.

Bankstown won the toss and batted first. Illawarra bowled extremely well during the first session, without taking a wicket. Bankstown 0-28 off 15 overs. Illawarra’s bowlers couldn’t adapt with the Bankstown batsman continuously rotating the strike and picking up easy singles. After 30 over’s Bankstown were 0-101. Illawarra kept to their game plan and finally started to take wickets, however Bankstown felt comfortable with their total of 9-175 from their 50 overs.

With Dylan Welsh and Billy Dean stepping up to open the batting their attitude of being aggressive from the get go paid dividends for them and the team. Illawarra 0-50 off 10 overs. Bankstown’s change of bowlers caused Illawarra some trouble and slowed Illawarra’s run rate down, and at the 25th over Illawarra were 2-63.Needing 112 runs from the remaining 25 over’s the boys were still confident. Tyson Barrett and Nick Henderson batted extremely well enduring large amounts of verbal talk and pressure from the fielders and bowlers. When Tyson was dismissed, we lost 4 quick wickets. After 42 over’s we were 6-134. Nicholas Henderson continued to put together a winning performance of 68 and guide the team to victory with 5 balls to spare, 7-179. Great Win Boys

Batting: Nicholas Henderson 68, Billy Dean 32, Tyson Barrett 21 Bowling: Kyle Trebel 2/21, Charlie Eaton 2/25

Round 4 Sunday 11 Nov 2012 Illawarra V South Eastern @ Figtree No 2

Batting first Illawarra lost a wicket in it’s the first over. A poor start was not needed. Dylan and Billy settled and at the 10th over were 1-35. The top order grinded away, however when Nicholas Henderson was given out LBW, a HORRENDOUS decision, Illawarra were 3-84. A total collapse occurred after this and saw Illawarra lose their last 7 wicket for 35 runs, all out for 119.

Needing to win the last two games to make the finals the team knew what they had to do. The bowlers bowled well and the ground fielding was outstanding. Illawarra had Sth Eastern 4-55 after 25 over’s. The boys continued to bowl and field the best they had all Rep season, the extra efforts boys were showing got them within striking distance. Sth Eastern 7-90, however Illawarra’s total was not enough to cause scoreboard pressure and Sth Eastern cruised to victory in the 41st over 7- 121.

20 Batting: Nicholas Henderson 26, Dylan Welsh24 Bowling: Jason Ralston 3/18, Gyan Wijekulasuriya 2/37

Round 5 Sunday 18 Nov 2012 Hornsby V Illawarra @ Normanhurst Park

Illawarra needed to win and hope other results went their way to advance to the finals. After 5 over’s Illawarra were on top and had Hornsby 2-9. The new batsman arrived and he edged his first ball to the slips and unfortunately we dropped him. He then proceeded to hit the ball to all parts of the field, and post his century in a blink of an eye (143 Not Out). His partner at the other end was also dropped in the slips on 3, and he also belted Illawarra’s bowlers into depression but to his disappointment we finally dismissed him for 99. These two batsmen put on a partnership of exactly 250. Illawarra were glad when they bowled out there 50 over’s. Hornsby finished on 4-266.

Illawarra started slowly due to some good tight bowling and were 1-31 after 10 over’s. Needing to lift the run rate the boys tried to push the issue, but Hornsby were a good solid outfit and they strangled Illawarra out of the match. Noah Butler 30 and Tyson Barrett 32 not out fought hard however Illawarra were dismissed for 156. The DCA Season was over, time to focus on the Kookaburra Cup.

Batting: Tyson Barrett 32 Not Out, Noah Butler 30 Bowling: Gyan Wijekulasuriya 2/41, Jason Ralston 1/31,

21 KOOKABURRA CUP (UNDER 14):

Illawarra travelled to Taree to compete in the 2013 Kookaburra Cup. The Illawarra team consisted of Gyan Wijekulasuriya(c), Tyson Barrett, Noah Butler, Logan Clements, Billy Dean, Charlie Eaton, Nicholas Henderson, Tane Nunn, Jye Phillips, Jason Ralston, Daine Richards, Kyle Trebel, and Dylan Welsh.

With several boys having never played on turf and our only organised trial match on turf being called off; the boys were behind the eight ball before a delivery was bowled. However the boys trained extremely hard after the DCA and the boys were confident of a good showing in the upcoming carnival.

Round 1 Monday 14 Jan 2013 Illawarra V Riverina @ Tuncurry Oval

Torrential rain had fallen the previous night and the wicket was damp but when Riverina won the toss they decided to bat. Illawarra’s opening bowlers looked good in their first spell and had Riverina after 10 over’s 3-26. With a change in the bowling and without a lot of experience on turf, the next few overs were way too short and there batsman started to look very confident. At 25 over’s Riverina were 4-86. Captain Gyan decided to bring spin into the attack just prior to the drinks break. Tyson’s first six balls saw Illawarra drop two catches and miss a stumping. Looking back on the game these three missed chances proved costly. Riverina’s middle order pressed on and guided them to a total of 6-159.

During the lunch break Illawarra set themselves targets and goals. As a coach I was extremely impressed in the way the team got together, sat and talked about the way they were going to go about their run chase. Losing their first wicket in the 10th over on 33, the boys looked extremely comfortable facing Riverina’s quicks however as soon as they brought left arm spin into the line-up, the pitch started to dry out and Illawarra started to struggle with the turn and the bounce. Illawarra failed to rotate the strike during this period and lost 3 quick wickets (stumping’s) setting Illawarra up for a poor start to the Kookaburra Cup Carnival being bowled out for a miserable 112.

The inability to bowl sides out after good starts is the theme that followed over from the DCA. To get results we need our concentration during the middle overs of games to improve.

Batting: Billy Dean 27, Charlie Eaton 15 Bowling: Kyle Trebel 3/35, Tane Nunn 2-25

Round 2 Tuesday 15 Jan 2013 Illawarra V Central Coast @ Johnny Martin Oval

Illawarra were up against a team they had never beaten before. Central Coast was a team that had some success at previous DCA Competitions and other country carnivals and we knew if we could beat them it would give us a chance to progress to the final. Losing the toss wasn’t what we wanted however the opening bowlers lifted for the occasion and broke through in the third over. The bowling and fielding was a complete turnaround from the previous day. From the Grandstand the boys looked very focused and continued taking wickets. Central Coast were in trouble at 5-48.Illawarra knowing in past games against Central Coast that their main opposition batsman had already been dismissed, they once again fell into their old ways and took the foot of the throat and started to get complacent and a 60 run partnership in the middle order rescued Central Coast and they stumbled their way to 9-169 from 50 overs.

Illawarra knew a good start was required and at the 10th over were 1-37. Central Coast quicks were tiring and Illawarra were playing some great shots and looked to be cruising. Spin was then introduced, Illawarra then proceeded to lose focus on what they had set out to achieve and lost 6 wickets, 2 LBWS, 2 Stumpings and 2 Run Outs in the space of 10 over’s. Illawarra were in trouble at 7-78. Jason Ralston come to the crease and decided he was going to attack the bowling from his first ball. Jason belted the ball all over the ground hitting 5 fours and 3 sixes in quick time and put his team in a position of 8- 158 of 41 over’s. Needing 11 runs from 8 overs and two wickets in hand Illawarra looked home. Central Coast decided to bring their fielders in to try and stop singles. It worked instantly for them when Gyan lifted one to mid-on and Illawarra were 9-159. Charlie and Jye chipped away and needed 3 runs with 5 overs left. But unfortunately Charlie went to lift one over mid- on and was caught for 31 leaving Illawarra 3 runs short, all out 166. An impressive but heart breaking game of cricket for the boys to be a part of.

Again I put it down to the concentration level and will to finish teams off when you have a team on the ropes early. No more talking about these problem boys we need actions tomorrow.

Batting: Jason Ralston 41, Charlie Eaton 31 Bowling: Charlie Eaton 3/34, Jason Ralston 2/28, Kyle Trebel 2/25,

22 Round 3 Wednesday 16 Jan 2013 Illawarra V Western @ Cedar Party Creek Reserve

On an extremely hot day Illawarra lost the toss and Western batted first. A slow start from the Illawarra team and poor bowling from our bowlers saw Western 3-85 at the 25th over mark. Illawarra spoke at the drinks break and realised their effort was not there and decided things had to change quickly. Illawarra fought back in the later part of Western’s innings to bowl them out for 143.

Illawarra discussed at lunch about the importance to prove to themselves they were a team that could compete at a higher level than they had been in the previous two matches. The batsman competed hard against Westerns pace attack. At the 25th over Illawarra were 4-75. Again the boys struggle with the spin attack, but a solid innings of 43 from Nicholas Henderson guided Illawarra to victory in the 43rd over, 8-144.

Batting: Nicholas Henderson 43, Noah Butler 22 Bowling: Jason Ralston 2/11, Kyle Trebel 2/28, Charlie Eaton 2/23

Overall our results this year for both DCA and the Kookaburra Cup weren’t what we set out to achieve. However as a coach I enjoyed seeing certain individuals improve their own game which will enhance the teams results in future competition. Thanks to the boys, boy’s parents and supporters of the two teams I coached this year for an enjoyable representative season, hope to see all the boys continue playing representative cricket in the future.

Marty Barrett – Coach

UNDER 13:

The Illawarra Under 13 WS Gee Shield consisted of Brandon Redman (c), Matthew Calder, Ryan Castles, Iain Carlisle, Harry Magennis, Liam Morath, Tane Nunn, Jye Phillips, Patrick Rees, Caelan Smith, Kade Warrington and Wesley Van Kempen

Trial Games

Trials were held against both Central Coast and Newcastle. After a poor start to the representative campaign loosing badly to Central Coast, the team headed to Newcastle. In their best team display up till that point, the boys narrowly missed getting a win against a strong Newcastle team as two of our batsmen were retired to allow others sometime in the middle. The important thing was that the side was starting to show their potential by being competitive and establish batting partnerships.

Round 1: Illawarra 102 Defeated By Manly Warringah 4/176

Despite demonstrating an improvement in creating batting partnerships and bowling tightly against Newcastle in their second trial match, the team knew that he had to be at their best to beat one of the leading teams in their first DCA round. Manly won the toss, elected to bat and put on 4/176 with a solid partnership by their two openers. Patrick Rees starred with the gloves taking three stumpings. Unfortunately the batting partnerships from the Newcastle game did not transfer against Manly and the boys were all out for 102.

Batting: M. Calder (31), B. Redman (20)

Bowling: J. Philips (2/40), C. Smith (1/16), M. Calder (1/27)

Round 2: Illawarra 8/227 Defeated Penrith 130

With a rare opportunity to bat first the team put on their biggest total as a group in two seasons. Great knocks by Harry Magennis (41) and Patrick Rees (59n.o.) allowed our lower order batsmen to score freely in the last 10 overs. Penrith were always going to struggle to chase down the total and terrific bowling by Wesley Van Kempen (3/16) and Matt Calder (3/28) enabled the team to bowl out Penrith and give the boys a taste of victory which was a sign of things to come.

Batting: P.Rees (59 n.o.) H. Magennis (41), L. Morath (25), R. Castles (23)

23 Bowling: W. Van Kempen (3/16), M. Calder (3/28), J. Phillips (2/16).

Round 3: Illawarra 131 Defeated ACT 98

Memories of a long drive back from the ACT the previous year after a heavy loss motivated the team for a win against an old foe. However, things looked grim for Illawarra at 4/32 when Tane Nunn came to the crease but a well-constructed innings by the all-rounder enabled a modest total of 131 to be posted. With support from Jye Phillips and Ryan Castles, Tane worked hard to ensure that the Illawarra bowlers had something to defend. An excellent spinning partnership by Jye Phillips and Caelan Smith piled on the pressure and led to a batting collapse including 4 run-outs. Two wins in a row and the boys were gathering momentum.

Batting: T. Nunn (60), J. Phillips (18), R. Castles (15)

Bowling: I. Carlisle (2/7), J. Phillips (2/22), C Smith (1/9), B Redman (1/9)

Round 4: Illawarra (3/103) Defeated Bankstown (102)

Losing the toss and bowling first would be the ultimate test to determine if the team’s current form would stand up in a run chase against Bankstown. Great bowling from all our boys enabled the team to bowl Bankstown out for 102 in under 40 overs. Chasing a small target is never easy, however Kade Warrington led the way after his terrific bowling spell with an emphatic innings (41 not out) supported by Patrick Rees (25 not out). With three wins on the trot the boys had learned the art of winning and were looking forward to the last round of the DCA with aspirations of a spot in the semi-final.

Batting: K. Warrington (41n.o), Patrick Rees (25n.o)

Bowling: K. Warrington (3/26), C. Smith (2/14), J. Phillips (2/23),

Round 5: Illawarra (7/153) defeated by Northern Districts (158)

A win against Northern Districts was a must to make it to the semi-final stage of the competition. With three wins in three games the team was confident of another as their opponents had been beaten by Bankstown in a previous round. Northern Districts posted a respectable total of 158 with Caelan Smith bagging 4 wickets. The chase was looking positive with Caelan continuing his good day with a classy innings of 43. However, as the grey skies came across from the south so did the boys chances of getting the runs, falling short by 5 runs at the end.

Bowling: C. Smith (4/32)

Batting: C. Smith (43), R. Castles (24), K. Warrington (24)

Orange Carnival

The Orange Carnival team consisted of Brandon Redman (c), Matthew Calder, Ryan Castles, Iain Carlisle, Harry Magennis, Liam Morath, Patrick Rees, Caelan Smith, Wesley Van Kempen, Kade Warrington, Tyler Warrington (and super sub Andy Magennis)

Game 1 – Illawarra 1/62 Defeated Lachlan 60.

Illawarra opened their Orange campaign with an emphatic win against Lachlan. Tight bowling and great fielding enabled the team to bowl out Lachlan for just 60 runs which was chased down in 40 degree temps for the loss of one wicket

Batting: H. Magennis (36n.o)

Bowling: M. Calder 3/16, C. Smith 2/2, W. Van Kempen 2/7.

Game 2 – Illawarra 4/158 Defeated Wagga Wagga 150.

Batting second again, Illawarra bowled out Wagga for 150 in the first innings. Great spells by Matt Calder, Iain Carlisle and Caelan Smith continued the good bowling pressure which was well backed in the field. Illawarra batted positively to win with both Harry Magennis (47) and Brandon Redman (38) making use of the fast and dry outfield.

Batting: H. Magennis (47), B. Redman (38)

24 Bowling: M. Calder (3/36), C. Smith (2/6), I. Carlisle (2/13)

Game 3 – Illawarra 142 Defeated ACT Blue 99.

Illawarra faced an old foe in ACT from the DCA competition in game 3 of the Carnival with the winner of this game finishing top of the pool. Kade Warrington made an impressive 36 to help post a team total of 142. The boys bowled and fielded exceptionally well to restrict ACT to just 99.

Batting: K. Warrington (36)

Bowling: W. Van Kempen (2/12), C. Smith (2/24)

3 V 4 Play Off: Illawarra 191 Defeated Mitchell 138

With three convincing wins the team should have been playing in the playoff for first, however due a controversial bonus point system the boys had to face Mitchell in the third versus fourth decider. Illawarra opened the batting with Kade Warrington scoring 74 in hot conditions. Mitchell gave an inspired performance, however our bowling was too good knocking them over for 138 runs with Wesley Van Kempen taking 3 wickets. A resounding win and a good way to finish the carnival undefeated.

Batting: K. Warrington (74), H. Magennis (22)

Bowling: W. Van Kempen (3/10), C. Smith (2/20)

Round 1 v Parramatta

Illawarra 7/153 (J Collimore 43, T Warrington 29, A Imber 25) def. Parramatta 9/152 (A Imber 4/26, T Warrington 2/24)

We were handed a tough assignment first up against a team who scored more than 1000 runs in 5 matches and has made the quarter finals for the last 2 years. We bowled very well looking like we would restrict Parramatta to a score of just over 100 but they fought back with some very good late order hitting. Aiden was our standout bowler taking 4/26. Callum and Tyler fielded brilliantly and Jono was polished behind the stumps. A target of 153 was very challenging but Jack and Tyler were outstanding taking us to 79 before we lost our first wicket. We got the wobbles but Aiden and Nathan chipped in to get us home with 3 overs and 3 wickets to spare.

Round 2 v ACT

Illawarra 3/182 (J Keyes 77 no, J Collimore 61) def. ACT 8/179 (J Collimore 2/20)

The ACT number 3 batsman Sanchez anchored their innings very well compiling a nice 97 no and setting us a formidable target of 180. Jack took 2 wickets and Will, Aiden, Connor and Owen took 1 wicket each. We lost an early wicket in the chase but Jono and Jack then put on a record 164 run partnership, showing a combination of excellent stroke play and fantastic running between the wickets. The boys confidence grew the longer they were together and we raced past the ACT target with a massive 13 overs and 7 wickets in hand. It was a pleasure to watch Jono and Jack in full flight, a partnership that must be up with the all time best by Illawarra in the Cawsey Shield.

Round 3 v Bankstown

Bankstown 9/216 (C Baldwin 2/7) def. Illawarra 206 (J Keyes 82, A Imber 36, O Kocyan 21)

25 Bankstown went on the attack and at 1/130 they looked like posting 250+. We fought back well with Connor taking 2 wickets but a target of 217 was always going to be a big challenge. Losing 3 early wickets we looked gone before Jono and Aiden dragged us back into the match with an 80 run partnership. Jono and Owen put on another good partnership and it looked like we would get home until we lost Jono to an unfortunate runout for 82. Owen fought hard (21) and Callum (13) did his best to get us to the target. We got bowled out with 4 overs to go and only 10 runs needed. This game was a nail biter - we should have won but we panicked with victory in sight.

Round 4 v Northern Districts

Illawarra 9/130 (N Wallace 36, T Warrington 19, O Kocyan 16, J Keyes 15) def. Nth Districts 117 (A Imber 3/16, C Baldwin 2/9, J Shortland 2/20, O Kocyan 2/26)

This was a must win match for us and we scrambled to 130 with Nathan, Tyler, Owen and Jono helping us set a respectable target. Full credit to Northern Districts as their bowlers did a lot with the ball and it was a struggle to survive at times. We bowled and fielded very well, the match was evenly poised throughout but Northern Districts were mostly on target. Our boys kept fighting hard and showed so much determination to record a 13 run win. Aiden took 3 wickets and Connor, James and Owen took 2 each. 3 catches to Jono and 2 catches to Jack. The boys were a real team today.

Round 5 v Hawkesbury

Illawarra 1/87 dec. (J Keyes 41, T Warrington 23 no) def. Hawkesbury 72 (O Kocyan 3/14, C Dodds 2/5) and 8/27 (C Dodds 2/3, O Kocyan 2/4, J Collimore 2/4)

We needed a big win to make it to the finals and the boys responded. We were outstanding with the ball with Owen taking 3 wickets, Callum 2 wickets and 2 outstanding catches to Aiden. We passed their score for the loss of only 1 wicket and asked Hawkesbury to have another bat for 1 hour in the hope we could take a few wickets and further improve our Quotient. The Illawarra boys were pumped and we went through them like a hot knife through butter, very nearly recording an outright win having them 8/27 in the 2nd innings. 2 wickets each to Callum, Owen and Jack.

Quarter Finals v Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills

Hornsby Ku-Ring-gai & Hills 5/92 def. Illawarra 91 (N Wallace 19, C Dodds 19)

The big occasion was too much for us today. It was a very hot day with a beautiful fast outfield and we had no hesitation batting when we won the toss. The boys struggled when we batted first this year and in hindsight we should have stuck to our successful formula of bowling first. Some rash shots, silly running between the wickets and basic panic saw us bowled out for less than 100 and 15 overs still to go. Nathan and Callum both top scored. We tried very hard in the field and had them 5 down. Their opener scored the luckiest 65 not out ever seen. He was dropped a few times and must have hit a dozen more balls that nearly went to hand. It we took our chances early on we might have defended the small total. Aiden, Callum, Jack, Matt and Will took 1 wicket each. It was disappointing to go out of the competition after our worst performance this year but the improvement shown this year has been outstanding.

Lismore Under 12 Carnival (Ballina – January 2013)

Aubrey Duncan was promoted to our squad for this Carnival as Owen Kocyan was unavailable.

Round 1 v North Shore (45 overs))

North Shore 5/119 (C Dodds 3/26) def. Illawarra 93 (T Warrington 17, J Keyes 15)

We faced the best team in NSW first up (Undefeated winners of Ron Arendts Shield, Undefeated winners of Creak Shield, Runners up in the Arch Cawsey Shield, Undefeated winners of this Lismore carnival). We had North Shore very worried, their coaching staff were given official warnings by the umpire for coaching from the sideline when it looked like we were going to win. At the 40 over mark in our run chase the game was ours to win but we lost 6 wickets for 4 runs and fell 26 runs short. Overall some great bowling with Callum taking 3 wickets, excellent fielding and strong batting by Tyler and Jono. In our first ever match on turf we nearly beat the big guns. We lost our way in the final run chase against a disciplined team but we learnt plenty during this match.

Round 2 v Hawkesbury (25 overs))

Illawarra 5/123 (A Imber 27 no, J Keyes 19, J Collimore 18) def. Hawkesbury 7/58

26 We had a big win against Hawkesbury in Round 5 of the DCA so the boys were very confident. We batted well to post 5/123 with Aiden, Jono, Jack and Will making handing contributions. We bowled and fielded really well again restricting Hawkesbury to 2 runs an over for most of the innings. A comprehensive 65 run win in a 25 over match. Well done to Aiden Imber who was awarded Man of the Match by the umpires.

Round 3 v South East Queensland (25 over match)

Illawarra 146 (N Wallace 22, J Collimore 18) def. South East Queensland 57 (M Watson 3/7, N Wallace 2/4, J Shortland 2/10)

A comprehensive 89 run win. Nathan, Jack, Jono, Will and James all chipped in with the bat before Matty and James wreaked havoc with the new ball having SEQ floundering at 6/6 after 8 overs. We were in total control from then on and Nathan also chipped in with 2 wickets. Well done to Matty Watson who was awarded Man of the Match by the Umpire. Will unfortunately suffered a fractured finger whilst attempting a low outfield catch.

Round 4 v Newcastle Presidents (45 over match)

Illawarra 1/112 in 33 overs (A Duncan 40 rtno, J Collimore 40 rtno) def. Newcastle Presidents 8/111 (M Watson 2/18)

Our opponents had improved considerably since we bowled them out for 28 at last years Ron Arendts shield. We struggled to take early wickets as they were intent on batting out the overs without taking many risks. We stuck to our bowling plans and restricted them to a reasonable 111. Aubrey and Jack got us away to a great start both reaching retirement score of 40 no and little did we know Jack batted through the innings with a fractured finger showing great courage. This was another comprehensive win with 9 wickets and 12 overs in hand. Well done to Aubrey Duncan who was awarded Man of the Match by the Umpire.

Playoff for 5th place v Manly (30 over match)

Manly 7/73 (C Dodds 3/4, M Watson 2/11) def. Illawarra 71(T Warrington 14)

We rotated the batting order in this match after 3 easy wins in a row. Manly bowled well to us but many undisciplined shots simply gave our wickets away. We fought back really hard defending a small total and took the match down to the last over. We should be confident if we play Manly again as they rely heavily on 1 very good player (who was awarded player of the tournament) and we have a strong all round team with many different players making regular contributions.

We finished 5th out of 20 teams in the Arch Cawsey Shield and 6th out of 20 teams at the Lismore Carnival. Every boy has shown improvement since last year without exception. Special thanks to Brian Whitehouse who was our Manager and to Mick Dodds who was our Assistant Coach. Also a very special thanks to all parents who have been a pleasure to be involved with.

Paul Warrington – Coach

UNDER 11:

The Under 11’s of 2012/2013 was a mixture of all different sorts of cricketers.

The Under 11’s Development Squad started with 15 Players. It then increased to 16 players about 2 weeks into our training sessions. We began training on the 19th August, and we continued to train every Sunday throughout the season. I asked Brett Buckley to manage the side who did a great job helping out at training and throughout the season. We lost two players throughout the season reducing our final number to fourteen players.

Our main aim was to expand on the basic knowledge the players already knew and to create a positive team environment. I thought that if we could concentrate on the basics we could not go far wrong. From the outset all players became friends and it was a great team atmosphere to be around. All players were keen to expand their games and worked very hard for such a young squad.

Our first match was a trial against the CI U12s Squad. We lost this game comprehensively however many positives came out of the fixture. Our next match against Newcastle in October was a thriller where we lost by 1 wicket, a fantastic effort by the side.

27 Training was fairly frequent throughout the regular club season and the side continued to improve. We continued to work hard on player’s techniques and also added some more game situations drills in.

Our next competition was the Ron Arendts Shield in January, a competition which we entered with 12 players. Unfortunately for us two of our better players were unavailable due to family reasons. The side played five games 2 x T20s and 3 x 40 Over Matches. We failed to win any matches; however not having two of our best players hurt us massively. Despite the results I was very pleased with squad’s efforts and constant positive attitude. Overall it was a great effort for a side whose youngest player was 8 years old. All players have a lot to learn, however the attitude and potential is there in the majority of players. I have no doubt that these players will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.

28 NSW CRICKET UMPIRES AND SCORERS ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL REPORT – 2012/2013

ILLAWARRA

By Zone Representative – Neil Findlay

An umpires training course on the Laws of Cricket was conducted over the weekend of 23-24 June with 15 participants from the Illawarra and Southern Zone in attendance. The course was facilitated by Darren Goodger, with the assistance of accredited trainers, Laurie Borg, Neil Findlay, Dr Stephen Poole and Muhammad Qureshi. At the conclusion of the course, 11 participants successfully attempted an examination on the Laws of Cricket and subsequently Chris Adams, John Cauduro, Frank Ciocci and Darren Sutherland became members of the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. The annual pre-season training seminar was then held on 1st September with the presenters being Laurie Borg, Darren Goodger and Dr Stephen Poole. The program featured a short quiz on the Laws of Cricket, video analysis of incidents in international matches, discussion on decision making and informative sessions on the LBW Law, performing under pressure, communication and match management. The presentation of the sessions was excellent as usual and the seminar was enthusiastically received by the 15 members present. A similar pre-season seminar is planned for 10th August 2013.

At each monthly Association meeting during the season, training sessions were again conducted on both the Laws of Cricket and local Playing Conditions. Prior to the meetings, quizzes were emailed to members to facilitate discussion and promote learning. Captains’ comments made in match reports provided further training material and often stimulated spirited debate. Two candidates also attempted the local examination of the Laws of Cricket which has been modelled on the NSWCUSA examination. Jack Timpano and Chris Salisbury both achieved the 75% “local pass mark” and so qualified to officiate in matches in the Illawarra.

The first Illawarra round of the SCG Country Cup was to have been played in October as a part of the weekly competition but unfortunately all matches were washed out. Subsequent rounds were played between Illawarra and Southern Zone teams in November and December and as usual one umpire from Illawarra and one umpire from the Southern Zone were appointed to each match. This annual umpiring exchange is valued by players and umpires alike who all enjoy the opportunity of seeing new faces on the field. The Illawarra umpires appointed were Laurie Borg, David Cullen, Neil Findlay, Greg Heys and Darren Sutherland.

Each year different Illawarra umpires have the opportunity to officiate in the popular Stumping Serious Diseases matches conducted by the as a fund raiser for medical research. On 18th November, two Twenty20 matches in this annual event were played at the University Oval. Peter Ferguson and Denis Veronese umpired the celebrity match which featured such sporting personalities as Wendell Sailor and Ben Creagh (Rugby League), Wade Cooper and James O’Connor (Rugby), Nikki Hudson (Hockey) and entertainers, Lauren Bryant and Steven Peacocke. The second match involving numerous former Test players, including Adam Gilchrist, Damian Martin, Vivian Richards, Brian Lara, Carl Hooper, Adam Hollioake, Graham Hick and Waqar Younis, was umpired by Dave Cullen and David Dobinson.

The annual Twenty20 matches between the Illawarra and Sydney Grade clubs, Bankstown and Sutherland, were again played under lights at North Dalton Park. The Illawarra v. Bankstown match was played on 24th October with Greg Heys and Denis Veronese officiating; while the Illawarra v. Sutherland match was played in 31st October with Laurie Borg and Frank Ciocci umpiring. Finally on 5th December, an extremely well attended Twenty20 trial match was played under lights at North Dalton Park between the Sydney Thunder Big Bash team and a ‘Gong Invitational XI, consisting of both Sydney Thunder squad members and some invited local players. The umpires for this match were Neil Findlay and Sydney Grade umpire, Mark Nickl, while Darren Sutherland acted as the third umpire.

This season, the Illawarra Twenty20 Competition was extended to all four Grades and conducted as part of the weekly competition. Five rounds were played prior to the Semi-finals and the Finals were then held on 17th February with matches in all Grades being played at North Dalton Park and Dalton Park West. The officiating umpires in these Finals were:

1st Grade: Keira v. Wollongong – David Dobinson and Peter Ferguson 2nd Grade: Keira v. Helensburgh – Brian Druery and Darren Sutherland

29 3rd Grade: Keira v. Wollongong – Frank Ciocci and Steve Saye 4th Grade: Keira Red v. Wests-Illawarra Blue – Chris Adams and Evan Lane

The Phil Jaques under 21 One Day competition was conducted over four Sundays in December, January and February. The umpires involved in this competition were Chris Adams, Charles Brockley, John Cauduro, Frank Ciocci, Dave Cullen, Peter Ferguson, Evan Lane, Barry Moir, Wal Smith, Darren Sutherland, Ray Trindall and Denis Veronese. The Final between Corrimal and Helensburgh was played at North Dalton Park on 10th February and was umpired by Frank Ciocci and Peter Ferguson.

Just prior to the conclusion of the senior competition the local junior Finals were conducted and umpires were appointed to all matches. Those appointed were – Barry Moir (Under 12), Charles Brockley and Frank Ciocci (Under 14A), Evan Lane (Under 14B), John Cauduro and Ray Trindall (Under 16A), and Chris Adams and Peter Ferguson (Under 16B).

The season eventually culminated at the end of March with the Finals of the inaugural Limited Overs Competition. In a break from tradition, the 2012/2013 Illawarra competition essentially consisted of 18 rounds of One Day matches in which playing conditions required a minimum of 50 overs per innings, mandated fielding and bowling restrictions and allowed for bonus points. The appointed umpires in the Finals were:

1st Grade: Keira v. Helensburgh – Neil Findlay and Steve Saye 2nd Grade: Northern Districts v. Wollongong – David Dobinson and Greg Heys 3rd Grade: Northern Districts v. University – Frank Ciocci and Darren Sutherland

4th Grade: Keira Red v. Wests-Illawarra Blue – Brian Druery and Denis Veronese

At NSW Country level, Neil Findlay and Greg Heys were again appointed to the Country Umpires Representative Panel. They both travelled to Wagga Wagga for the Southern Country Carnival in November and in January also stood in the rain affected Country Colts Carnival in Wollongong. In November, Greg officiated in the NSW Under 19 Carnival at Campbelltown; while, after Christmas, Neil umpired a ¼ Final of the SCG Country Cup in Gosford, a semi-Final and the Final of the Country Shield in Cowra and the Bradman Cup Final in Nowra. In addition, in October, Neil was appointed to a Women’s National League match between New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory played at Blacktown and in January, along with several other members of the Country Panels, he accepted an invitation to umpire in the Sydney Grade Competition. Further, three other Illawarra umpires were also afforded the opportunity of umpiring at Country level. David Dobinson umpired a ¼ Final of the SCG Country Cup; Dave Cullen officiated in the Bradman Cup Final and Denis Veronese stood in the Under 14 State Challenge match at the SCG.

This season’s Illawarra Zone Development Panel Zone consisted of Frank Ciocci and Darren Sutherland. The Panel is designed as a pathway for those aspiring to umpire at Country level and to promote their development they were be appointed to matches in both the Twenty20 Konica Cup and SCG Country Cup. In addition an Illawarra Zone Representative Panel was formed consisting of experienced umpires, Dave Cullen, David Dobinson, Peter Ferguson, Steve Saye and Denis Veronese. These Panel members officiated in such Illawarra Representative matches as the Twenty20 Konica Cup (Dave Cullen, David Dobinson and Peter Ferguson) and the annual Illawarra v. Newcastle fixture (Steve Saye). In addition, two local umpires availed themselves of the standing invitation to umpire in the Sydney Grade competition. Charles Brockley stood in two 3rd Grade matches while Chris Adams umpired in a 4th Grade match.

During October and November, as usual several umpires stood in NSW Junior DCA Inter-Association Shield Competition. The appointed officials for the Illawarra teams participating in this competition were – Steve Sims (Under 12), Brian Druery (Under 13), Ray Trindall (Under 14), Barry Moir (under 15) and Charles Brockley (Under 16). Finally, the 2013 Lord’s Taverners NSW Schoolgirls Cricket Championships were held at the Dalton Park complex in mid-March and the umpires appointed were John Cauduro, Frank Ciocci, David Dobinson, Evan Lane, Barry Moir, Darren Sutherland and Denis Veronese.

The overall membership of the Association in 2012/2013 remained steady. Unfortunately, the services of three umpires were lost – Mark Simula who opted to umpire in the Sydney Grade Competition, Wal Smith who suffered a serious knee injury

30 mid-season and Jeff Gittings because of illness. On the other hand, new members to join the Association were Jack Timpano and Craig Whyte, a Sydney Shires umpire, who has recently moved into the district. With numbers essentially remaining unchanged, it was again possible to appoint umpires to all matches in 1st and 2nd Grade each round and to the majority of 3rd Grade fixtures. A pleasing feature of the season was the continued development of new umpires John Cauduro, Frank Ciocci and Darren Sutherland.

The Umpire of the Year Award named after Illawarra’s longest standing umpire, Wal Smith, was again awarded. All umpires who officiated in 2/3 of the matches played during the season were eligible for the award and its criteria were marks awarded by captains in their match reports and attendance at monthly Association meetings and training seminars. The 2012/2013 Umpire of the Year award was won by Neil Findlay and it was presented at the Cricket Illawarra Presentation Night on 5th April.

In closing, the outstanding efforts throughout the season of the office bearers of the Illawarra Cricket Umpires Association are to be acknowledged. As usual President, Morgan Prosser, has been tireless in his leadership of the Association and it was gratifying that his efforts were recognised at the Cricket Illawarra Presentation Night with his receiving the Norm Warren Memorial Award for services to cricket in Illawarra. Secretary-Treasurer, Barry Moir, has continued his efficient and professional organisation of Association business and Sponsorship Officer, Charles Brockley, is to be commended for negotiating on-going sponsorship of the Association from the AMCAL Dapto Mall Pharmacy. Our gratitude is also extended to the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association for their continuing support. The on-going involvement of Laurie Borg, Darren Goodger and Dr Stephen Poole in the Illawarra Cricket Umpires’ Association is greatly valued and it was pleasing to have had Graham Chudleigh represent the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association at this season’s Annual General Meeting. The Illawarra Cricket Umpires’ Association looks forward to maintaining this close relationship with the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association in the coming seasons.

31 DELEGATE TO NSWCCA COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT

As has become the case over recent seasons, the 2012-13 season was a busy one for the New South Wales Country Cricket Association. The calendar is becoming more crowded as the Association strives to provide players in rural and regional areas with the opportunity to go as far in the game as their talent and dedication allows. I believe the season was again a very successful one for the Association.

All programmes were completed successfully with Illawarra maintaining its status as one of the stronger zones. This however, does not mean that the Committee of Management is complacent. In the immediate period following the representative season the Committee met and conducted a complete review of our operations resulting in some possible changes in the seasons to come. These changes will, if approved at the next quarterly meeting, be implemented for the 2013-14 season.

The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the success of the Country team at the National Championships in Bundaberg. Whilst last season’s result in Geelong was outstanding this win was even better. To go through undefeated in all three forms of the game was unbelievable. Even better from Illawarra’s point of view was that the team was captained by Graeme Batty and included three other Illawarra players Andrew Hicks, Tim Laws and Dale Scifleet.

New South Wales Country also provided a number of players to NSW representative teams. Kyle Brockley, Ben Chapman and Riley Ayre were selected for the NSW under 17s. Even more pleasing was the selection of seven former country players in the last NSW Shield team that defeated South Australia outright at the SCG. I believe this indicates that the work of our coaches and administrators is outstanding and these selections support the programmes that the Country Cricket Association has developed over the last 20 years.

Of course this success does not occur without the financial support of Cricket NSW. Cricket NSW provides over 1 million dollars to support us in our operations. This funding is reflected in Zone Grants, which have not been decreased despite the tight financial situation Cricket NSW finds itself in, support of Region Cricket Managers, Regional Directors of Coaching and Zone Administrators. Unfortunately Cricket NSW is still not in a position to re-introduce the Grants and Loans programme but I can assure you that this is high on the priority list.

The Country Cricket Association is indeed fortunate to have Bruce Whitehouse as its Programmes Manager. His dedication to Country Cricket is paramount in its success. Bruce travels an enormous number kilometres to venues around the state ensuring that each of our carnivals is run successfully. He also oversees the day to day running of the Association in a manner that is both efficient and professional.

Finally I would like to say that it is an honour and privilege to represent Illawarra on the Committee of Management. I again say that I do not take this position for granted and hope that I can continue to represent such a strong zone.

Ian Hogg – Delegate
