2 Firsts for SWCC Academy 2017

Reached the final of the Essex Peter Coe competition for the first time in our history First time we have reached the knockout stages of both Essex competitions in the same year (Peter Coe as above and Matchplay semi-final)

The first time u11 and u12 players had been invited to be 12th men with the 1st XI – warming up with them, having tea with them, being introduced to the history of the club, carrying on drinks and being part of the Team debrief. Louis Nicholls and Daniel Legg were the first. Both u11.

First time our u8s won the u9 league beating our u9s!

Mascot! Being a mascot involves warming up with the first XI, tossing the coin for the match, a tour of the ground including the memorial benches, Pavilion changing rooms, scorebox, clubhouse and the beer cellar! If anyone is interested contact David Barrs, Chairman – [email protected]. Tea with the players can also be arranged.

Academy Awards: Notes

Players may be nominated for representative in Essex or Cambridgeshire if they are considered ready to perform at such a level. However, playing at this level relies on commitment as well as talent. If you feel you would like to be considered or if you feel you or your parents cannot make this commitment, please speak to your manager.

Highest batting average min. 5 innings/Lowest min. 10 overs. Because young players play so few matches we don’t insist on 5 ‘completed’ innings before they qualify with an average. This is not the case in senior cricket. Please note that a more accurate picture of performance can be gained the more overs bowled or the more innings batted. A low minimum has been chosen to involve as many players as possible in the statistics. Overall batting and bowling awards are made by managers in consultation with coaches and others. There are no definitive criteria.

Club caps awarded to any established Academy player taking 5 in one match (including 5 stumpings and/or catches by a keeper), scoring a century, playing at County level or being a first choice selection for the senior SWCC teams or village teams with whom SWCC have a formal arrangement. From 2009 Club caps will be awarded to girls for taking 3 wicket/catches, scoring 50 in a match and for County or adult selection.

Players’ Player may be awarded on the basis of Player of the Match nominations over the course of a season or a vote amongst other squad members.

Academy records have been compiled since 2003. There may well be superior performances before that – just let us know.

The Alfred Adams Batting Award. Alfred Adams scored 279 by batting all day against Bishop’s Stortford for SWCC on the Common on 11 July 1837. At the time it was the highest recorded individual score in the country. Fiona Harris was the first woman to play competitively for SWCC in 2002. She still plays for SWCC when she can. John Smith first played for SWCC in 1946 and retired in 1963 at the age of 35. He is the tallest of the team in many of the clubhouse photos of the 1950s and 60s. John passed away in 2009

Josh Bysouth was an u13 Academy player when he died in a car accident with his Grandfather in 2012

Academician of the Year is awarded to the academy player who has made the strongest commitment to his or her own development and to the work of the Academy and Club. It may be related to the “Clubman of the Year” award for each age group.

Jack Petchey Awards were given for outstanding personal achievement 2006-2015. The club withdrew from the scheme in 2015 – it did not recognise youngsters under the age of 11 and the criteria for awards became unduly restrictive. It has been replaced from this season with the Rajapack Award Scheme sponsored by Rajapack (www.rajapack.co.uk). The club will receive £100 for every century, 3 catches and 5 wickets in a single match in senior cricket from u16 upwards. We will also receive £100 for every 50 and 5fer and 3 catches in junior T20 cricket and similarly £100 for every 30, 3 wickets and 2 catches in girls and Crocus cricket. In junior T20 matches played with a “retire after 30 runs” rule, then a Rajapack award goes to players getting 30 runs in each of two matches We currently do not issue individual medals or trophies, preferring to issue certificates. This maximises involvement and keeps costs low. However, sponsors for individual trophies shown on the previous page are always welcome.

One of the top four U16 teams in Essex is no mean feat. The players, all in support and SWCC must be well proud.

Manager Steve Temblett, Tom Coach Nigel Tegg, Tom Rodda, Rodda James Rushford Captain Louis Temblett Review of season Starting the season with a very small squad of 12 players, what could have been a tough season turned into a very successful campaign across both leagues, albeit frustrated by many opposition teams having difficulties fielding teams, aided by our adopted U14, Stan, and valiant efforts from our U13 players (Ben, Ollie, Kaj, Jonny) – and the odd U11 (Bertie R) who stepped up to contribute to make sure we put out full teams in all of our scheduled matches, to gain the CYCA U15 Premier League championship (pipping Granta to the title!!!!) and 2nd place in the West Essex U15 League! Huge thanks go to all of the players, coaches and parents for their efforts and commitment through the final big league season for this outstanding squad of boys.

Manager Daniela Coaches Nick Down, ,James Rushford, John Karsten Southgate Captain Rotated Assistant Scarlett Hughes, Emma Robert Coaches Review of season : 2017 was characterised by a mixture of challenges and opportunities. The challenges were provided by weather, erratic squad numbers and an unfortunate lack of commitment from certain opposing teams. For a core of dedicated players, the opportunities came in the form of top level training, matches as part of the successful Ladies’ Squad and good quality opposition within the Cambs. League, especially benefiting those with sufficient commitment and patience to see the season out.

Captain Rotation Vice captain Rotation Review of Season: A thrilling season of so many highs, and no lows. We played 31 games (including PCC) and won 25 of them, with all 31 of the U12 players featuring several times (unless injured!). We took 240 wickets, scored 3,537 runs and the standard of cricket at times was exceptional. Every one of the boys thrived under Mark Thompson’s coaching, for which they are very grateful. The boys entered four competitions and won the CYCA U13E division, were third in the WEDCB U13 league, runners up in PCC and won the Hugh Craig Cup.

Captain Vice Captain Review of season A successful season for the 50 strong squad with strong performances across 4 leagues. Highlight of the year was an unbeaten season by the gold squad to win the CYCA Division C League. Purple team and White teams placed 2nd in the CYCA premier league and WECB league respectively and Greens 4th in the WECB terriers. A big thanks to the coaches (and their support team including the U15’s) – it was great to see the improvements in batting, fielding and bowling made in training taken out into matches.

Review of season They finished in 3rd place 12 pts behind the leaders. It has been a fantastic season of progress and we have had 4/5 new players coming in who have all made the step up with key contributions to our season. Some special moments where James hit 25 in 1 over and Adam took 2 wickets in two balls. We have also had a 40 run partnership by Jacob and Chris and some special catching from everyone in the team. The senior players have performed very well, leading by example, and keeping the Crocus in contention all the way through the season, showing some true leadership qualities. We are playing some really exciting cricket which has been fun to watch and see the players grow in confidence.

Captain Review of season A fantastic season for the u9 squad winning 7 out of their 8 league games only losing to our very own SWCC U8’s leaving us in second place in the league! All the boys have contributed exceptionally well and a special mention must go to the commitment of Conor Hoskins and Jack Howard who have played in all 8 league games and both batting, bowling and fielding exceptionally well. Ethan Smythe, Max Rowlandson and Fraser Darling all made some excellent contributions to the team in the later stages of the season with both bat and ball. Welcome additions to the squad this year included Felix Tilley, Dexter Mitchell and Jake Dowsett. All 3 boys made significant progress and scored valuable runs and took valuable wickets. Well done to the whole squad who played this year and let’s see if we can 1 league position higher next season!

Captain Vice Captain Review of season: The Under 8s had a marvellous time playing their cricket and showed enormous enthusiasm as well as skill. We are not sure whether we hold a new record for the number of leg spinners in one team. For each game we rotated the captaincy and, interestingly, each of them had one of their best games when given that responsibility. They are very competitive group whom I’m sure will continue to do well. The best game of the season by far was the game against SWCC Under 9s (to decide who won the league) where the Under 8s narrowly came out on top. The following boys played in the league team: Alexi Demetirou-Foale; Barney Hoyle (U7); Bertie Murphy; Charlie Hoyle; Ethan Wright; Fergus Liddell; Henry Clark; Henry Porter; Jack Hill (U6); James Razzell; Jonny Rumsby; Paul Coe; and Ted Bowers. It was also great to see new players at training and some of them play their first matches.
