Firsts for SWCC Academy 2019

First time we have reached the national round of the u13 cup

More than 20 (24) Club Caps awarded for the first time – 5th XI and Midweek XI were run in order to develop young players and record numbers are currently playing at County level. The future is very much purple and green

First time our girls’ team has won their (predominantly boys) league

Mascot!

Being a mascot involves warming up with the first XI, tossing the coin for the match, a tour of the ground including the memorial benches, Pavilion changing rooms, scorebox, clubhouse and the beer cellar! If anyone is interested contact David Barrs, Chairman – [email protected]. Tea with the players can also be arranged. We ask for a donation towards club funds.

4 Academy Awards: Notes

Players may be nominated for representative cricket in Essex or Cambridgeshire if they are considered ready to perform at such a level. However, playing at this level relies on commitment as well as talent. If you feel you would like to be considered or if you feel you or your parents cannot make this commitment, please speak to your manager.

Highest batting average min. 5 /Lowest min. 10 overs. Because young players play so few matches we don’t insist on 5 ‘completed’ innings before they qualify with an average. This is not the case in senior cricket. Please note that a more accurate picture of performance can be gained the more overs bowled or the more innings batted. A low minimum has been chosen to involve as many players as possible in the statistics. Overall batting and bowling awards are made by managers in consultation with coaches and others. There are no definitive criteria.

Club caps awarded to any established Academy player taking 5 in one match (including 5 stumpings and/or catches by a keeper), scoring a century, playing at County level or being a first choice selection for the senior SWCC teams or village teams with whom SWCC have a formal arrangement. From 2009 Club caps will be awarded to girls for taking 3 wicket/catches, scoring 50 in a match and for County or adult selection.

Players’ Player may be awarded on the basis of Player of the Match nominations the course of a season or a vote amongst other squad members.

Academy records have been compiled since 2003. There may well be superior performances before that – just let us know.

The Alfred Adams Batting Award. Alfred Adams scored 279 by batting all day against Bishop’s Stortford for SWCC on the Common on 11 July 1837. At the time it was the highest recorded individual score in the country.

Fiona Harris was the first woman to play competitively for SWCC in 2002. She still plays for SWCC when she can.

John Smith first played for SWCC in 1946 and retired in 1963 at the age of 35. He is the tallest of the team in many of the clubhouse photos of the 1950s and 60s. John passed away in 2009

Josh Bysouth was an u13 Academy player when he died in a car accident with his Grandfather in 2012

The Ron Muggeridge Academician of the Year is awarded to the academy player who has made the strongest commitment to his or her own development and to the work of the Academy and Club. It may be related to the “Clubman of the Year” award for each age group.

Steve Jones Spirit of Cricket Award (introduced 2019) to reflect the Laws of the Game and the values of Saffron Walden Cricket Club. Named after former Vice President and MCC member, Steve Jones. The Club wants to recognise Academy members who demonstrate the Spirit of Cricket in their behaviours, as well as those who help to win games. We are therefore very pleased to announce a new award this summer: the Steve Jones Spirit of Cricket Award. This award recognises the Academy member, of any age, gender or ability, who is considered to have demonstrated best the behaviours of sportsmanship, respect, encouragement and responsibility.

Rajapack Awards Jack Petchey Awards were given for outstanding personal achievement 2006-2015. The club withdrew from the scheme in 2015 – it did not recognise youngsters under the age of 11 and the criteria for awards became unduly restrictive. It has been replaced with the Rajapack Award Scheme sponsored by Rajapack (www.rajapack.co.uk). The club will receive £100 for every century, 3 catches and 5 wickets in a single match in senior cricket from u16 upwards. We will also receive £100 for every 50 and 5fer and 3 catches in junior T20 cricket and similarly £100 for every 30, 3 wickets and 2 catches in girls and Crocus cricket. In junior T20 matches played with a “retire after 30 runs” rule, then a Rajapack award goes to players getting 30 runs in each of two matches We currently do not issue individual medals or trophies, preferring to issue certificates. This maximises involvement and keeps costs low. However, sponsors for individual trophies shown on the previous page are always welcome.

Manager Darren Leech Coach(es) Jack Ormsby, Dan Cummins, Tony Wiseman, Regis Chakabva Captain(s) Leech S (4), Keys A (2) Scorer(s) Eliot Ede, Jess Squires Review of season This year, fixtures were after GCSEs. We played 6 matches – winning 4 group games (Loughton, Colchester & East Essex, Wansted & Snaresbrook and Brentwood). The 5th game against Bancroft was conceded to us. Winning a tough group, the QF against South Woodford was also conceded after Essex intervened (!). We went on to beat Upminster (convincingly) in a semi- final tie played at Hutton. The final was played against Frenford at the Cloud FM County Ground, Chelmsford. Sadly, it was not to be - Frenford played better on the day and won the final. This was only the 2nd time that SWCC have been represented in the final of this competition. Therefore, the boys did make some history and in doing so they all provided us with some great cricket. We used over 20 players from the u16, u15, u14 and u13 groups across the 6 fixtures this summer. Things are looking very good for future Matchplay, U19 and other competitions, as we really do have some talented young cricketers at SWCC.

Manager Matt Clare & Vince Taylor Coach Mark Thompson Captain On rotation Vice-captain On rotation Review of Season: Mixed season, interrupted by loss of early fixtures to rain, then a crazy finish of 12 games in 17 days. Played 23 and won 11, lost 12. A match for any team when “focussed”, but lack of focus was often costly. Some excellent leadership by senior players. A cup final win against Matching Green was an undoubted highlight. More players blooded in senior cricket.

Squad 2019 under 10-12 Brian Taylor

Manager Nick Hoyle Coach Dan Cummins / Regis Captain Jed Bailey Review of season: We are very pleased with this years’ squad and how they developed. Not a single player had played in this tournament previously which meant as defending champions we were always going to be very inexperienced but also quite a young squad.. Everyone conducted themselves well, played the game in a professional and honest way and represented SWCC as one would hope. Every player improved immensely and each one has had an important role to play as our team performances improved. They were a great group to manage and we are well set with 9 players able to play next season. Thanks to all the parents for being the boys summer taxi’s, scoring, umpiring and for creating some great teas.

Managers John & Valérie Reader Coaches Ray Mordini, Sam Blackman Captain Rotation Vice captain Rotation Review of Season: A really enjoyable season with a squad of over 30 players, boosted by arrivals from Wendens Ambo CC and Linton CC. We competed in two U13 leagues –finishing joint top of the CYCA Regional and comfortably mid-table in the West Eagles league. We also entered the Hugh Craig League winning 4 of our 6 matches. Every member of the squad got some match time, with a number making their competitive cricket debuts. Massive thanks to Ray for stepping in to coach the squad, and to Jack Tordoff and Oliver Haslam for helping out with training. Thanks also to Darron Diggons and Scott Riley for lots of umpiring, and again to Darron as assistant manager.

Squad 2019 Under 11 Managers Daniel Rowlandson Coaches Dan Cummings

Captain By rotation Vice Captain none Review of season We entered the WEDCB League, the WEDCB Terrier League and the CYCA Regional League. The focus on the season was to adapt to the hard ball game and for the batsmen, out being out!. We also wanted to reduce the number of wickets lost due to run outs, and runs given away from over throws. The team made much progress in both areas thanks to some great training drills but there is still room for improvement. Their excellent coaching combined with the boys’ willingness to learn led to a significantly improved squad as the season progressed and we developed a strong bowling line-up in particular. The season started with a crushing defeat in the WEDCB U11 cup at Harlow, having bowled well to restrict Harlow to 86, we were skittled out for 12 – a tough lesson and out of the cup. However our last game of the season we dominated Dunmow with an impressive win. However with a small squad, fulfilling all of the fixtures was a challenge. Finally, big thanks to Rich Hardy for scoring and Byron Sindell for sharing the umpiring duties.

Captain Review of season A challenging season with several players being selected for the Brian Taylor squad, making the transition to hardball cricket and playing in a higher age group league.
