ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

2014/15 PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is with pride that I submit my Presidents report to the members and friends of the Altona Cricket Club.

In 2013/2014 we put in place a 3 year plan that would see the ACC once again play- ing off for a premiership in the VSDCA. There were performance indicators put in place to measure our plan to ensure we were on track for our ultimate goal.

The first indicator was to make the finals in the 2013/2014 season after missing out the year before. We recruited to make us competitive and provide leadership to the playing group, and this was achieved. Sec- ondly, we wanted to go one step further in 2014/2015 and make the semi-finals, something I am proud to say we achieved this year. Our ultimate goal is for a premiership in 2015/2016. We are on track for what we set out to achieve, but more work is still needed to reach the premiership.

The 2014/2015 season was one of consolidation after the signings of the previous year. The senior com- mittee and junior committee worked together to make the club as viable on the field as off it. The close- ness with which we worked together was the most pleasing aspect of the year for me as President, and the playing group and supporters will see more structure and direction in the club in the coming years.

Once again as a policy of the coaching panel, success was rewarded and again this year, many new players debuted for the club this year. Again like last year, the most notable debutant was a 15 year old debutant in Zane Donazzon. The ACC is proud of the fact that we see ourselves as the stepping stone for higher grades and we promote youth within our club. Rewarding success and achievements and promoting youth are the things that make us proud of our coaching and playing group.

The season cannot be completed without once again mentioning the phenomenal efforts of Aaron Maynard. Aaron followed up his herculean efforts of last year with another stellar year in 2014/2015 where he made 683 runs (including 3 tons). Aaron is one of the premier batsmen in the competition and his accumulation of runs is astounding. Another great year Aaron well done.

The other special mention is for James Grubb. James this year was rewarded for his performances with se- lection in the VSDCA representative team to play the Crusaders. James has become an integral part of the senior team taking 21 and making 236 runs. James opened both the and bowling this year, which is a remarkable effort.

I would like to thank the captain of our club Shane Jones on his leadership and maturity he showed this year in the role. Shane made his first hundred for the club when he made 125 against Kew. Shane made 432 runs this year and the success of the side is testament to the manner in which he guides and leads the team on the field. Great work Shane.

I would like to congratulate Colin Scott and everyone who played fourths in the season. We made the finals in the fourths and the leadership and guidance of Colin was a huge part of that success. Well done to all.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

The ACC organised our second “Ladies / Charity day” which was again our most successful function and is now been an annual event along with our Presidents Lunch. The charity day attracted 190 people $7,918 was raised for Breast West. The function was managed by Samantha Elmore who worked tireless- ly for months in the lead up to ensure the day went off without a hitch, which it did. Great work Sam, your effort is appreciated by all at the club and as we know it is greatly appreciated by the recipient, Breastwest.

The club was able to attract another major sponsor this year in the Phoenix Hotel. Through the enor- mous effort of Glenn Paten as sponsorship manager, the club were once again able to gain sponsors from an eclectic field of business. From the corporate sectors of mining and finance, to sporting clubs and the hotel industry. Please check the website and this report for the full list of sponsors, but I would like to once again acknowledge our major sponsor Royalco Resources Limited who again supported the club greatly.

Our Presidents dinner this year was again a huge success with everyone entertained on the night by the guest speaker Rodney Hogg. Rodney is one of the best after dinner speakers and everyone who attended remarked how successful it was. The function will be reverting to a Presidents lunch again next year so keep an eye out for that event.

I would like to also acknowledge the following people / groups who have assisted the club this year and without their support the club would not be in the strong position it is: -The Junior and Senior committees -The parents who provide their children with the outlet of cricket and assist in whatever way they can to making the club a better place. -Our cricket department (Mark Mitchell, Jim Sheedy and Craig Duff) -David and Janine Appleby for the superb afternoon teas -Hobson’s Bay Council -The Victorian Sub District Cricket Association -Ray Patton for his work with the Friday night raffles at the Altona Bowling Club. -All our Coterie members and all our sponsors.

The Executive committee this year loses one of the cornerstones of the committee with Glenn Paten an- nouncing his retirement after 15 years as an Executive member. We all know Glenn’s work ethic and pas- sion for the club and all at the ACC thank Glenn for his efforts. He won’t be going far helping out by as- sisting the coach’s, in their role teaching and encouraging improvement in the playing group. Thank you Glenn.

The club was once again served well by the many volunteers who made afternoon teas, cleaned up the clubrooms after functions, coached the players, scored and many other tasks. The club survives on the back of the volunteers work and whilst being too many to mention we are grateful for your presence around the club and your assistance throughout the year.

Again as I said last year, the committee and myself want to return our great club back to the days of play- ing in grand finals and Premierships and it is with the efforts of all we will achieve this. Thank you every- one for this season and I look forward to our senior and junior club providing us with greater success next season.

Yours Sincerely Neil Burns (President)

2014-15 SEASON REVIEW

Senior coach’s, Mark Mitchell & Michael Davenport (along with trusty Team Manager, Jim Sheedy) were again re -appointed at the conclusion of the 2013/14 season. Unfortunately, shortly into pre-season training, due to per- sonal reasons, Michael informed the club he could no longer commit the time required to coach the club. Last seasons Best Club person, Craig Duff, was quickly appointed to the coaching panel as a replacement to Michael. The pre-season junior coaching program once again proved very popular with strong numbers attending. I am sure we will see the benefits of these programs in years to come. The numbers we had attend pre-season training forced the club to re-introduce a 5ths team. Unfortunately we were not successful in our bid for this team to join a Sunday competition in the VTCA (played on turf). Whilst not our preferred competition our boys were thankful to able to play a game of cricket in the WDCA. Michael Davenport was instrumental in 2013/14 in arranging the greatest afternoon tea in the VSDCA. With him not being around the club this season our afternoon teas became a concern. Not for long though. David and Ja- nine Appleby stepped up and took over the mantle of organising the number one afternoon tea in the VSDCA. Thank you David and Janine. Whilst on the field we had 2 teams make finals, our first XI and 4th XI. The coach’s felt that a lot of the boys gained a great amount of experience from the season which will only bolster their confidence moving into the 2015-16 season. The enthusiasm amongst the group remained high throughout with our numbers at training al- ways in the 40’s and some nights exceeding 50.

Our R.M. Hatch Shield Team was professionally managed again by Andrew Wesley. This season we had 7 Altona registered players which should bolster our senior stocks in years to come. Congratulations to our boys, whilst they did not make finals, they represented the club with distinction. (Full RM Hatch Report Page 70).

Off field our Social Club really expanded it’s events. We held 3 Super Sunday events in the off season hosted by the Altona Bowling Club. We held some well supported social functions as listed below:-  25th May, 22nd June and 31st August- Super Sundays  18th October— Bogan Bingo  16th November— Junior Trivia Night  17th November— Captain Spalding  20th December - Xmas Break Up  17th January— Presidents Dinner with Rodney Hogg (full report refer page 22)  7th February — Ladies Day (full report refer pages 25-27)  21st February - IPod Shuffle Night  8th March — Reverse Raffle Draw—One by Ken Stephenson and Denis O’Dowd. We may see some of these funds come back next season with a couple of Memberships in the Purple and Gold Boys Coterie.  11th April — Kirk Medal Night

Congratulations to all of our Trophy Winners this season. Craig ‘Bangers’ Bancroft stood out for his tiresome work around the club which earned him the Ray Patton Best Club Person Award. Bangers’ weekly emails were one to look forward to keeping everyone abreast of social activities, the ’ pond’ and of course the media fines. He was a great back up for Azza feeding us all on Thursday nights and assisting with the ‘players trip’. He also took on an additional role assisting with coaching at training.

2014-15 SEASON REVIEW—Cont.

The club was very proud this season to raise funds for charity. The charity chosen to support was Breast West (Western Health). This was instigated by some of the girls around the club wanting to again support a Ladies Day. It was decided to raise funds for Breast West who support breast cancer sufferers within the Western Suburbs of . Samantha Elmore with assistance from Lauren Maynard and Neil Burns organised a tremendous afternoon and evening (and night for some). The afternoon was a great day, despite the oppres- sive heat and humidity, which saw us raise and donate $7,915.05, eclipsing last seasons figure of $4,661.95.

A special thank you to club legend, Ray ‘Fish’ Patton. Fish continues his great work for the club by managing the Friday Night raffle at the Altona Bowling Club. Is it any wonder the Best Club Person Award is named in Fish’s honour. Congratulations to Fish and the Altona Bowling Club for taking out this seasons Premier Division Premiership. We need to get as many members along to the Altona Bowling Club from 5.30pm on a Friday Night to support the Raffle. Your Altona Cricket Club Membership entitles you to free Social Club Membership at Altona Bowling Club. This membership entitles you to free entry in the ‘lucky members draw’ on Friday Night, you could be the winner and take home between $200 and $1,000. Drawn every Friday Night at 7pm.

Congratulations to Darren McConville, Ian Mackenzie and the entire junior sub-committee again on an excel- lent job leading our junior club. Our junior program has certainly taken on a refreshed level of professionalism since your involvement. To all the members of the junior committee, all junior coach’s, team managers and scorers, a big thank you for your efforts throughout the season in teaching and developing our junior players. We need each and everyone of you for this club to prosper.

A big thank you to all of our scorers who assisted our senior teams, Christine Howard, Janine Grubb, Debbie Wilson, Sian Donazzon, Dee Cullen. Apologies if I have forgotten anyone other than the players who assisted with scoring. Thank you again to our Practice Captain and First XI Team Manager, Jim Sheedy. Once again en- suring our players are looked after better than any other team at any other Subbies Club.

The club continues to strive to raise funds to improve our training facilities. We currently have 4 hard nets and when available we have two turf nets. During periods of inclement weather, which seems to be the norm, the hard wicket facilities are insufficient for our needs. The club is in the process of drawing up plans and hope to obtain quotes to complete construction. Unfortunately we are expecting quotes to come in at around $200K+. We hope to raise sufficient funds to cover half this amount prior to approaching council to assist with the balance. We are well on our way with our investment account balance recently reaching $50K, these funds are to be used solely for this purpose. We hope to have the plans on show within the club rooms during the 2015/16 season.

To our major joint partners, Peter Topham, Bruce Pertzel and Nick Boicos from Royalco Resources Ltd. A big thank you for jumping on board again with the club. Your contribution is invaluable to the on going success of our club both on and off the field. To our newest major partner Jay Mitchell from Phoenix Hotel. Thank you for your this season, we look forward to working closely with you again next season.

Neil Burns continued his effort in growing our Coterie Group, ‘The Purple and Gold Boys’ and ‘The Past Players’ in season 2014-15. This has proven very successful in not only a financial sense but also giving a lot of our past champions, players and officials, another reason to re-associate themselves with the club. The feedback from the Coterie members has been overwhelmingly positive and was capped off by an outstanding Presidents/Coterie Group Dinner which saw this years guests entertained by former Australian Fast Bowler Rodney Hogg. Great job again Ecka.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15 MUIRHEAD IN SCORCHERS TRADE

Perth Scorchers spoiled the party for former Aus- tralia quick Brett Lee after winning back-to-back Big Bash League titles with a thrilling four-wicket tri- umph over in Canberra on Wednes- day evening. The Scorchers snuck home with the last ball at Ma- nuka Oval after a cameo by Test batsman Michael Carberry (9 off seven balls) nudged them past the Sixers' target of 148.

In a final that took numerous twists and turns, the Sixers failed in their chance to tie the match and force a after botching a run-out oppor- tunity with the last ball. ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15 JAMES—Our Latest Vic Rep

James Grubb became our latest Victorian Representative when he was select- ed to represent the Victorian Sub-District Under 19 team. James was picked to represent the Subbies U/19’s in a match against the Crusaders Foundation Side. In a high standard game the VSDCA Under 19’s defeated the Crusaders. The Crusaders won the toss and batted, and off their allotted 50 overs made 8/188. The outfield at the Walter Galt Reserve (Kingston Saints) was lightning fast so restricting the Crusaders to this score was an outstanding effort by the VSDCA boys who bowled and fielded well. Our very own James Grubb chimed in with 1 wicket. In reply the VSDCA reached 189 with 4 overs to spare, scoring 7/191. Unfor- tunately James didn’t bat in this innings. James is a genuinely talented all-rounder. He bowls with natural swing whether bowling with a new or old ball, with the wind or against the wind. His late away swing is something that is very difficult to master. James played every game this season in the 1st XI taking 21 wickets @19.33 with an economy rate of under 3. His best match figures came against Sunshine where he took 6/37 off 19.5 overs. James also finished off the season opening the batting. He showed amazing concentration in both first XI finals matches. In the Qualifying Final against Melton he scored 23 in an opening stand of 66 with Adam Brown. In the Semi Final against Roxburgh Park he scored a patient 20.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15 1988-2014

A prodigious batting talent and prolific run-scorer with a bright future ahead of him, Phillip Joel Hughes tragically lost his life on November 27, 2014, two days after he was struck by a short ball while batting for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales at the Syd- ney Cricket Ground.

Hughes’s death triggered an outpouring of emo- tion rarely witnessed in cricket, with the 25-year- old a hugely popular figure within the sport, both domestically and internationally. Australian captain Michael Clarke delivered an emotional eulogy for his fallen “little brother”. Here is the full transcript:

HE’LL definitely be calling ... me a sook right now, that’s for sure. I’m deeply honoured to have been asked by Phillip’s family to speak today. I’m humble to be in the pres- ence of you, his family, his friends and his communi- ty. He was so proud of Macksville and it’s easy to see why today. Taken from the game, his family and loved ones at the age of just 25, he left the mark on our game that needs no embellishment. I don’t know about you, but I keep looking for him. PRESIDENTS DINNER 17th JAN 2015

The clubrooms were a buzz in anticipation of the club’s President luncheon held at the clubrooms Saturday, 17th January. President and ‘Purple and Gold’ Coterie organiser, Neil ‘Ecka’ Burns, worked tirelessly in the preceding weeks to ensure all ran smoothly.

President Burns had arranged our guest speaker, former Australian Test player, Rodney Hogg, to present at the dinner. . There was also a big game taking place out on Kirk Oval with the A’s taking on Yarraville in the Round 11 1st X1 game. Alto- na won the toss and elected to bat in the heat.

The luncheon opened up with Glenn Paten welcoming all our sponsors. -Bruce Pertzel and Nick Boicos ROYALCO RESOURCES - Jay Mitchell PHOENIX HOTEL -David Appleby - D.C.I.T. -Brendan Post - SPANNER SUPPLIES -Brad Scholes – TOTAL COLOURPLUS -Steve Molnar – A1 KITCHEN SUPPLIES -All the Members of PURPLE & GOLD BOYS COTERIE GROUP

Neil Burns roused the audience as he spoke about several topics including:-  Our community work and in particular our continued work with our All Abilities side managed won- derfully by Lorraine Woodman  James Muirhead’s continued rise within the cricket ranks representing Perth Scorchers in BBL04  Our upcoming event where we hope to raise significant funds for Breast West. Again highlighting our community involvement  How important our sponsors are to the club  He thanked the hard work of the current committee  Also thanking the Altona Football and Hockey Clubs for their great numbers at the dinner

Following our lunch, our guest speaker, Rodney Hogg, spoke about his career in cricket in particular his 1978/79 Ashes campaign where he took 41 wickets at an average of 12.85. In case you missed it his average was 12.85. Hoggy was without doubt one of our most entertaining speakers, sharing story’s from his past, he even provided a controversial glimpse of the current day Australian Players.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15 WESTERN REGION ALL ABILITIES CRICKET CARNIVAL Altona Cricket Club

Altona Cricket Club in association with Leisure Networks Victoria hosted our 2nd Western Region All Abilities Cricket Carnival on Sunday 1st February. 80 players made up 8 teams participating in the crick- et carnival held at Grant Reserve Altona. Teams were split into an A grade competition and a B grade competition depending on player ability. For the first time involving an Altona side, we played a 35 over game on Kirk Oval. Winning the toss and electing to bat, our boys were outclassed by the combined Werribee/Barwon team. In drizzling rain, our boys managed a score of 79 which was always going to be difficult to defend. This proved the case with the Werribee/Barwon team passing the score with 5 overs remaining. Congratulations to both teams as the weather conditions made it difficult for both batsmen and bow- lers to hold their feet. The game was played in great spirit with the best team on the day coming away with the win. Play in the B’ Grade competition also continued despite the weather. All teams participating again played in the right spirit. All participants enjoyed a free Barbeque provided by the Altona Cricket Club at the conclusion of play. Thank you again to our volunteers who assisted with the set up of the day, um- piring and managing the event, cooking the barbeque and showing the hospitality toward our guests for the afternoon. Altona Team Manager Lorraine Woodman was full of praise for the efforts of Altona Cricket Club ‘Thank you all for your great support, days like this do not happen without volunteer workers. We appreciate our affiliation with Altona Cricket Club. Our guys and girls had a wonderful day with some players expe- riencing out door cricket for the very first time, they were all very excited’.

ACC CREATE NEW RECORD IN RAISING $7,915 FOR BREASTWEST

Over 180 women braved oppressive heat and walked the pink carpet to attend our 2nd Ladies Day Function held at the club, Saturday 7th February. Whilst the mercury climbed so did the enthusiasm to raise funds for Western Health and Breastwest. Breastwest assist women in the West who suffer from Breast Cancer. Sam Elmore was the mastermind behind this years big event. Sam was adamant she could attract up to 200 women for this years function. With the clubrooms only big enough to comfortably hold 110 people an alter- native had to be sought. It was decided to purchase some marquees and hold the catered function on the synthetic turf at the cricket training facility. President, Neil Burns, obviously also feeling the heat, welcomed all attendees to the club. A quick slip of the tongue had all guests in raptures. Neil reminded our guests of last years events where proceeds were split between our charities of choice, Breastwest, March Against Melanoma and the McGrath Foundation. Last season we rose $4,661.95 in total for these charities and this year we were on course to exceed $7,000.

The Pink carpet lead the way to big event. Three large mar- quees housed the ‘Ladies Day’ function for over 180 guests

Hard to believe there was a game of cricket being played. All the action took place at the nets within the marquees.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

Melanie Fisher from BreastWest spoke passionately about the services provided by Breastwest and the re- quirement for further funding. It was essential for Breastwest to be able to provide even greater support to their patients but unfortunately budget shortfalls restricted Breastwest. She spoke about the need to pro- vide a pack of ‘essentials’ to newly diagnosed women. Support of clubs like ours would make this possible. It was smiles all round during the raffle. With over 150 gifts most women left the event with a gift, or in some cases two. Neil Burns concluded formalities stating “whilst our club already does great community work by providing a friendly and safe sporting environment for juniors and adults within the local community, it is really satisfying to be able to create awareness of the work of Breastwest and the McGrath Foundation. It is even more satisfying to be able to raise funds for these charities that may assist in further research or as- sisting women in the community who may be affected by Breast Cancer. He continued by thanking Sam Elmore for her hard work. Events like this one do not happen without hours and hours of planning. In closing he announced the interim profit to the audience which exceeded $7,500. (Later determined to be $7,915.05). The after party then kicked off back in the clubrooms with the gathering entertained by Dennis Mesini and his band.

Over 150 raffle prizes up for grabs

Neil Burns and Sam Elmore pre- sent the Bendigo Bank Cheque to Melanie Fisher from Breast- west at the conclusion of the event.

ALTONA C.C. 52nd ANNUAL COACH’S REPORT 2014/15

Jim Sheedy, Mark Mitchell and Craig Duff

This season the Altona Cricket Club continued to flourish with player numbers growing and the Club fielding a 5th XI. The coaching panel had 64 players on our list, up from 54 players last season. The Club improved team performance by qualifying two sides (1st & 4th XI) to play finals cricket, with the 1st XI going one step further than last season but still chasing that elusive finals victory. Apart from these two achievements, the coaching panel were pleased to be able to blood our 15, 16 & 17 year old juniors through all XI’s and it is this youth which will form the base of the club’s development and improved performance over the next few seasons rather than the unsustainable recruiting of over priced and under performing players who may be looking to join our Club. At present the majority of our playing list is under 19 or over 30 years of age, and it is these under 19 players who will be the nucleus of our next Premiership XI as they continue to develop and strengthen playing cricket in a very competitive Sub-District Association.

Thanks to Jim Sheedy, Craig Duff, Shane Jones and Andrew Wesley for their support and passion in coaching this fine group of players. Thank you to our volunteer scorers and army of afternoon tea helpers. Thanks to our Committee for your support and congratulations to all award winners.

This will be my last year as Senior Coach, however I look forward to assisting in running our junior development programs during the winter months.

ALTONA C.C. 52nd ANNUAL 1ST XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2014/15

2014/15 was a year the 1st eleven should be proud of. From just scrapping into the finals the previous year, our aim was to compete heavily in the finals series. With a couple of changes during the off-season and a solid pre-season behind us, we were looking forward to a great year. A big congratulations to the 19 players who represented the 1st Eleven this year and a bigger congratulations to Shahid Mansoor, James Hicks, Jake Cullen, Shannon Clarke, Ben Murfet and Zane Donazzon who all made their 1st Eleven debuts. After a slow start to the year with losses to Melton, Ivanhoe, a wash out to William- stown and just scrapping over the line against Preston it was going to be a tough run home to make the finals. One of the stand out performances before Christmas in- cluded a 142 run partnership vs Balwyn from Josh Young (77) and James Grubb (81) Shane Jones 1st XI Skipper to help the A’s from 6/102 to a final score of 265. Following on from 2013/14 season, the ever consistent Aaron Maynard showed his class and had peeled of scores of 123, 89 and 121 before the Christmas break. The bowlers had been consistent too with Andrew McCammond (12 wickets), James Grubb (11 wickets) and Lee Elmore (11 wickets) leading the charge. As fate would have the A’s finished 4th at the end of the season with some consistent performances as a team. We faced Melton in a hard fought qualifying final with Melton getting over the line. We fortunately re- ceived a second chance and faced Roxborough Park/Broadmeadows in the semi-final to progress to the Grand Final. The A’s gave it their all by having the Roxy boys 6/70 in reply to our 99. At the end of the day 99 wasn’t enough and the opposition made the remaining runs in a disappointing end to the season. Some great individual performance this year included bowlers McCammond (32 wickets), Elmore (24 wickets) and Grubb’s 21 wickets to go along with his 236 runs for the year. Zane Donazzon’s 3/29 on debut, Jake Cul- len’s 3/20 vs Kew and Shannon Clarkes 3/42 off 20 overs on debut will hold the club in good stead moving for- ward. Maynard’s 683 runs @ 62.09 this year with 3 hundreds and 2 fifties showed what a class player he is in the competition. A great sign moving forward were that 5 players score above 200 runs this year including Tim Collins (254, including 100no vs Ivanhoe), James Grubb (236) and Josh Young (225). The improvement in the team’s overall performance this season is due to more people taking responsibility and putting their hand up at different stages through the year. I would like to thank the committee members, supporters, coaching staff and a big thank you needs to go out to Christine Howard and Jim Sheedy for their continued support of the 1st Eleven. We love the support we get from all involved and hope that we all move forward together for future success. Good luck to Lee Elmore who has been with the A’s for the last 5 years and has decided to hang up the spikes for the Altona CC. The Elmore family will be missed but I am sure we will still see plenty of you all at the A’s. The support you have offered to me and all players involved at the Altona CC speaks volumes of your charac- ter. There is still plenty of improvement needed going into the 2015/16 season. The improvement from the likes of Jake Cullen, James Grubb, Jake Duff, Zane and Clarkey this year shows the future is bright as long as we all push forward together. Respect the club and respect your team mates and I am sure next year we can take the next step forward again. Jonesy

FRANK KIRK (1st XI Best & Fairest Award)

Frank Kirk was instrumental in the formation of the Altona Cricket Club. Frank was involved with Altona Mer- cantile Mutual Cricket Club in the late 50’s and early 60’s and sought to recruit Ray Duckett to the club. Ray was a champion player at Newport ANA and had just moved into Altona. Together they pushed for Altona Mercantile and Altona ANA to join forces and become the Altona Cricket Club. Whilst Altona ANA initially re- jected the merger offer the Altona Cricket Club was formed in the 1962 season. Altona ANA folded shortly after and its players then moved across to Altona Cricket Club. Initially playing in the WAFDCA then the VJCAA and thanks to the tireless work of Frank Kirk now the VSDCA. Frank is the longest serving President in the club’s history. Frank was recognised for his hard work by not only having the ground named in his honour but also the first XI Best & Fairest Award. This award, voted by the umpires at the end of each game is awarded to the best player in the first XI for the season.

Will AZZA make the ‘VSDCA Team of the Year’ Again!

Aaron Maynard has backed up his stellar 2013/14 season again eclipsing the 500 run barrier in the 2014/15 season. Aaron chalked up 683 runs this season at a fantastic average of 62.09. He also took 6 wickets at an average of 21. Azza continues to belt out the runs and was well supported this season by his captain, Shane Jones, who also accumulated 432 runs. This pair were often called upon to form the basis of the Altona innings with his team mates chiming in at different times throughout the year. Maynard made a big impact in Round 2 against Melton with a score of 123. He backed that up the follow- ing game with 89 in the A’s victory against eventual North West Group Premier, Plenty Valley. He celebrat- ed a fine Christmas with another ton, 121 in a one day game against Yarraville. After the Christmas break, Azza compiled a fine 75 in the victory over Coburg. He then had to wait until the one dayer against Bruns- wick in Round 13 before bringing up another match winning innings of 109 not out. Azza had made three tons throughout the year. This is the second time an Altona player had made 3 centu- ries in the first XI in the one season. You guessed it, Azza was the first last season. In his first two hundred’s Azza was dismissed the only way the opposition were going to dismiss him, with weary legs he was . His final hundred he remained not out.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

ALTONA C.C. 52nd ANNUAL 2ND XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2014/15

The 2nd Elevens year probably fell short of what we were hoping to achieve, but what it did bring were more opportunities. A massive 26 players graced the field this year which was a result of players being given a chance either through good form or potential. Of the 26 players that played this year only 6 players were above the age of 25 (and 3 of those 6 were only Cameo roles) proving that our attempt to de- velop these younger players in the club is well on track. But where we need to head now is for those players to start to take the bull by the horns and 2nd XI Captain Craig Duff make runs or take wickets. I've always stated that if you are given the oppor- tunity to pass or fail you have no excuses as it is in your hands once we hit the field. There were a number of shining lights throughout the year that used these opportunities to ad- vance to the 1's which is ultimately where we should all be trying to head. Ben Murfet with a 56 and 2 for, Shannon Clarke with 7/70 and 34no, Alex Canals multiple innings, Hicksy's 48 & 55, Zane’s huge finish to the year and Jake Duffs big finish with the ball. To single out one player that needs to know that he has the ability and potential to play at the highest level is unusual, but Seb Canals showed in the few games he had that he can stand up with bat, ball and in the field. So all in all we can see that we have the cattle on the paddock now we to work towards playing in fi- nals. The message that needs to be conveyed is that our consistency needs to be of a much higher lev- el, we need to set ourselves goals that we want to achieve as individuals which ultimately help the team. A couple of small stats that we can all look to improve on is; Anyone batting at 1-4 should be looking to make a minimum of 250+ runs a year, with 5-8 looking at 200+ (Of 26 players only 3 achieved over200) Anyone consistently Bowling should be looking at 20 wickets (but more like 25) with Economy rates under 3. Of 20 Players No one took 20, but the top 5 were all under or just around the mark. Bowling is harder to assess as dropped catches and the like can contribute to number of wickets. I would like to thank Brian Madigan once again for his help as without the experience he provides we would struggle to get through a lot of games. Once again he proved that if you spend time at the wicket you can make runs and when given the ball give yourself the chance to take wickets. And Adam Brown for taking the reins when I moved into the 1's, Adams year also built to a big finish and the massive improvement in his fitness levels from Christmas on showed in the long run. Lets work towards finishing higher next year and giving ourselves a chance of playing finals. Duffy

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

ALTONA C.C. 52nd ANNUAL 3RD XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2014/15 The third eleven season could be measured in many ways. Far differently had a finals berth been achieved. Compared to many opposition teams, we fielded a young line up, which can be considered as much a positive as a negative. Batting Over the course of 2014/15, twenty eight individual players were selected in teams, with only one playing in all twelve. This led to a situation of an unsettled line up, more significantly noticed with our batting results. 3rd XI Captain Sean McCartney Whilst conceding that statistics don’t always paint the full picture, our 2014/15 result of 2059 runs scored is effectively 500 short of the previous season result. The benefit of batting regularly with players you know well, are comfortable with and develop under- standings was not evident. Our inability to consistently post totals of 200 plus runs led to many tight losses. Results versus Kew and Brunswick are perfect examples, with the Brunswick loss in the final round only requiring 150 runs at Altona on a great batting wicket for a finals berth. A middle order collapse, losing 5 for 8 at one point, highlighted our inability to assess the situation and arrest the momentum against a medio- cre bowling attack. The standout performance for the season was an outstanding 72 no by Sebastian Canals vs Yarraville, batting through the innings to deliver a solid win, which no doubt contributed to his promotion to the second eleven. Bowling Our bowling and fielding efforts could not be more different. 114 wickets taken with runs against at 2245 is a vast improvement over 2013/14. An overall improvement of 19 wickets conceding 300 less runs. This achievement despite conceding 787 runs in the first three rounds of the season, highlight the rapid improvement of our young bowlers. Our focus of improvement was to increase our pressure on opposition batsmen by continuing to bowl in tried and true areas. Fields were set to challenge the opposition to play across the line. As the season progressed, the bowling group, with the support of the field, were able to develop and stay in the contest for longer periods. The results achieved speak volumes for the efforts in this area. Individual players such as Jake King, Daniel Mackenzie, Mitchell Cullen and Sebastian Canals provide genuine excitement for the coming seasons, all of which had the opportunity to play at second elev- en level in 2014/15. Conclusion Not achieving a finals berth was a disappointing result, given the many good performances achieved throughout the season. Our result of seventh is not a true reflection of the talent of our young group. With another year of development, I believe stronger results will be achieved in the near fu- ture.

ALTONA C.C. 52nd ANNUAL

4TH XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2014/15 This season was one in which the 4th XI showed a great improvement with results over the previous few seasons, culminating in a Finals game at home. Our season started off great with 5 wins on the trot, which included wins over the previous season’s finalists Preston & Williamstown, and also wins against the old enemy Melton, Plenty Valley and Balwyn. Individual highlights amongst these games included Neil Birthisel with 74 runs and 2 wickets vs Preston and 66 vs Wil- liamstown, Andrew Peters with 4 wickets vs Preston, Adam McIntyre took 6 wick- ets vs Melton, Will McConville just missed his maiden ton with a game winning 96 vs Plenty Valley, Nic Zavattiero taking 4 wickets including a Hat Trick vs Plenty Val- ley, Andrew Wesley with 5 wickets vs Balwyn and Angus McIntyre making 62 vs Balwyn. 4th XI Captain Colin Scott As performing players progressed up to the thirds, our results started to suffer when we lost our next four matches, including a nail biter to Coburg, to slip from second on the ladder to eighth. Our bowlers were doing some great work, but the batting, particularily at the top of the order was our weak point. Individual highlights during these losses were few with John Donazzon making 69 and taking 3 wickets vs Ivanhoe and Andrew Peters with another 4 wickets vs Ivanhoe the only ones of note. The crunch game of the season came against Werribee, where we had to win to have any chance of playing finals. Things looked very grim early when we slumped to 6 for 12, but we managed to recover to make a small defendable score of 129. Our bowlers done a great job and secured the victory for us, bowling Werri- bee out for 67 with Andrew Peters taking yet another 4 wicket haul the best individual highlight, but all bow- lers were great. We set Werribee a small target of 154 in hope of an outright, but feel short – having them 5/30 in the second dig. With finals now on the agenda again we had an outright win against Sunshine where Andrew Wesley had a blinder, taking 5/14 in the first Innings, made 66 with the bat and then took another 6 wickets in the second innings to finish with a remarkable 11 for 51 for the match. Mark Ablinger also took 4 wickets in the second innings of this match. Our last game of the season ended up a battle for top spot with Brunswick, where once again our batting proved our weakness, when we couldn’t chase a gettable score of 237, falling well short at 154. We ended up fifth on the ladder. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to play our “away” final against Plenty Valley at home on the magnificent Frank Kirk Oval, where we had beaten them earlier in the year. I was confident that we had the talent in the team to win this game, but unfortunately it didn’t go that way. We were bowled out for a very disappointing 108 runs, with a few of us getting a start but not going on with it. We went out to bowl, fired up, knowing that our bowlers had the ability to do anything on their day and we had them 7/102 at one point, but they ended up making 173. We gave our all to try for a reverse win, with a better batting performance in the second dig but time was against us, as we ended up setting them a target of 65 off 20 overs, which was made easily. Andrew Wesley with another 7/35 was the outstanding achievement for this game. I thoroughly enjoyed captaining this team this year, particularly with the great young talent we have coming through, with the likes of Will McConville, Daniel Mackenzie, Nic Zavattiero, Austin Raunik, Milan Nerapanda, Andre Edwards, Tommi Wesley and Jack Middlebrook all making significant contributions to our results throughout the season. I am sure that if all of these kids put in the hard work during the off and pre-season, that they will progress through the grades and get some great results. It was also great playing with the older crew of players, some of who also had some great season results, such as Andrew Wesley, Andrew Peters and Neil Birthisel. I appreciated all of the assistance that I had on match day from the likes of Vince Cutajar and Stephen Daff, and particularly want to thank the parents who helped throughout the year with scoring and drinks…etc. Lastly I want to thank the Coaching staff and Committee for giving me the tremendous privilege and honour of captaining this team for the Altona Cricket Club. Colin Scott 4th XI Captain

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

RAY PATTON (Best Club Person Award) One just needs to look at the club honour boards to realize why the best club person award has been named in Ray’s honour. A life member, Ray was a part of the cricket club committee for almost 30 years, serving as the club, secretary, president and treasurer for an amount of time that has and most likely will never be matched. Ray also played for the club playing 153 games scoring 1232 runs as a wicket keeper taking 93 catches and 8 stumpings. Ray continues his involvement in the club by being a driving force behind the club’s major fundraiser, the Friday night raffle at the bowling club.

WAYNE ’LUMPY’ PATTON (Club Champion Player Award) The club champion trophy was renamed in honour of Wayne Patton after he passed away in the late 1980’s. An all- round Altona person Wayne served on the committee for many years and was a first XI wicket keeper. Wayne played 132 games in a career that began in 1974/75. He was tough competitor with a very strong character. I remember Lumpy as our Team Manager in our premiership year of 1987/88 along with his assistant Stewy who had snapped his leg in the previous football season. Lumpy had the lower part of one of his legs amputated and we had both Lumpy and Stewy on the sidelines on crutches and together they formed our 12th man.

MICK JENKINS (1st XI Batting Award) The first XI batting average award is named after a long standing supporter of the club. Mick Jenkins served on the club committee and happily invested time into the younger players. Mick enjoyed watching his son Paul play at the club and was always willing to help out the club whenever help was needed. Paul went on to become a champion player winning the Hatch Medal 1st XI Best & Fairest in the Sub District Competition, he Captained Coached the club, was awarded Life Membership and was also a recipient of his fathers award 4 times.

GORDON MACFARLANE (1st XI Bowling Award) The 1st XI bowling average was named after club legend Gordon Macfarlane who has been the winner of the bowling average a record 9 times. Gordon is the current club games, wickets and runs record holder and is the only player in Altona Cricket Club history to take 600 wickets. He was the first player to reach 6000 runs for the club. Gordon has won the prestigious Kirk Medal 9 times, is the winner of the Hatch Medal which is the1st XI Best & Fairest in the Victorian Sub District Competition (one of only two Altona players to have won this award), is a 1st XI Premiership Player and is also a Life Member of the club.

MONICA CLARKE (2nd XI Batting Award) The Monica Clarke Memorial Shield is named after our first female life member and 2nd XI scorer for many years. Mon- ica was a tireless worker who loved scoring for the seconds while watching “her boys”. Monica was the scorer for the 1st XI for many years and became the scorer for the seconds when the then first XI captain forgot to pick her up one week.

ALEC MERRILL (Most Promising Junior Award) The Alec Merrill award is named after former senior & junior coach Alec Merrill. Alec was the senior coach and U/16 coach in 1972/73 Season when the 1st XI, 2nd XI and U/16’s all won premierships in the then VJCA Competition. He was appointed senior coach for a 2nd time in the 1987/88 season and yet again the 1st & 2nd XI’s won premierships this time in the Victorian Sub District Competition. He was very influential in fostering young talent at the club, hence this award was created in his honour and is presented every year to a top age U/17 player. The award is $300 worth of coaching.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

Annual Report 2014-15 Altona Cricket Club Junior Section

Presidents Report:

I want to start by acknowledging the fantastic efforts of my fellow com- mittee members that contributed to another successful season for the ACC jun- ior section. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of all the non- committee members who have contributed to our success throughout the Darren McConville season, all our coaches who freely give up their time and do a fabulous job in coaching our children, and all the parents who help out with our committee initiatives and the running of our teams on game day. I would like to thank Andrew Wesley and Ben Davies for their Hatch (Craig Shield) efforts. Thanks also to the Senior committee who continue to enable the Junior committee to achieve the best results they can. The annual junior report highlights a club strong in numbers, 145 children from Milo to U17's and 90 of those are U13's or younger. Our on field results were a little disappointing this season but we continue to rotate our players in the hope that this will paid bigger dividends in the future. As a Junior Com- mittee we must continue to strive to find the best coaches we can for our teams. It's always nice to have some success on the field, but the way our juniors represent our club, their families and most im- portantly themselves while playing cricket is one of their and our great achievements. I would also like to acknowledge the senior coaching panel initiatives, the junior development sessions that have proven a great success with the players and their families. These initiatives will pay hand- some dividends for the senior club in years to come.

Looking forward we still need new parents who are interested in joining the junior committee especial- ly from the younger age groups, new ideas are always welcome. Junior sponsorship remains one of our great challenges. We have to work with the Senior club to maintain and expand our training facilities, and should be a big focus as we continue to grow strongly.

In closing I would to congratulate all that contributed to a very successful year at the Altona Cricket Club Junior section and look forward to even more successful 2015-2016 season.

Darren McConville

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

Administrative Report: The Altona Junior Cricket Club is affiliated with the Western Region Junior Cricket Association (WRJCA) and fielded the following sides in the 2014-15 season: U11A U13A Friday U13A Saturday U15A U15B Gold U15B Purple U17 ½A

Membership numbers Total number of registered junior players affiliated with the WRJCA for season 2014-15 was:

Age group Number of registered players Milo In2Cricket 31 Skill development Milo In2Cricket 18 T20/Cubs format U11 16 U13 25 U15 33 JC Craig Shield 6 (Transfers) U17 16

TOTAL 145

Pre-registration letters were sent out in August and our registration day was held in September. It was encouraging to see a number of ‘graduates’ from our Milo In2Cricket program register as U11 players. A survey to players, parents and coaches was conducted at the end of season; some good feedback and suggestions were provided to allow the Committee to improve going forward.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

Milo In2Cricket

The junior section ran the Milo In2Cricket program on Sunday mornings during October through to December 2014; due to popular demand and fantastic parental help we ran four extra sessions in February 2015. The sessions were well attended with a total of 49 registered participants rang- ing from 4 years old through to 10 years old. This is an increase of 68% from the previous season. A new programme was added this season; a T20/Cubs format was intro- duced for the participants that had completed 1 or 2 years of Milo cricket thus forming a pathway from the skill development sessions into the U11 CUBS format cricket. This format introduced a hard ball and the wearing of protective gear. It is well documented by Cricket Victoria that statistically there is a low retention rate from Milo In2Cricket into club cricket registrations with as high as 72% of kids lost; one of the reasons is that there is a gap between the age that kids are enrolled into Milo cricket (4-5 year olds) and the youngest form of club cricket U11s. The committee assessed the “T20 Blast” programmed proposed by Cricket Victoria and decided on running our own interclub programme. Our programme was very well received and positive feedback was frequently provided. A presentation was held with all participants receiving a medallion and certificate. Altona CC Milo In2Cricket programme continues to be the main pathway into the U11 Cubs or U11A teams. A number of clubs in the local area have not run a Milo In2Cricket programme and as a result the junior and eventually the senior sections of the club have suffered. Without Milo In2Cricket, we will struggle to field junior teams – without junior players our senior club will also struggle. Therefore running a Milo In2Cricket programme at Altona CC and continued support in this programme is of critical importance for the future of the club. Along with all the parents, a special thanks to David, Campbell & Lachlan McCracken, Chloe & Paris Rafferty, Matthew Turcinovich, Nathan McColl, Daniel Mackenzie and Will McConville for assisting in running our successful programme this season.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

Junior Development Programme During the off season, our senior coaching panel (Mark Mitchell, Craig Duff and Jim Sheedy) and a number of senior players kindly gave up their time to run a 5 week development program – aimed at U15 and U17 players transitioning onto playing senior cricket. The aim of our Junior Development program was to start and work & nurture our junior players coming through the club to senior level. It was an outstanding initiative with a lot of players improving significantly in a short space of time. Two Saturday afternoons coaching clinic sessions were run with the younger junior kids for a 1 hour batting & bowling session. These sessions were well attended and appreciated by the players involved and their parents. As your child approaches this age and is passionate about their cricket, it is nice to know these initiatives are available at Altona Cricket Club where the senior coaches and senior players are so supportive and en- couraging of our younger players coming through the junior ranks. Major Sponsorship

The juniors section was fortunate to receive a $5000 sponsor- ship from the Altona Sports Club in season 2013-14. As our major sponsor, we introduced new player shirts in season 2014-15 displaying the Altona Sports club logo. This money will be put towards the purchase of a new bowling machine during winter 2015. Being a member of the Altona Sports Club offers you a range of exclusive benefits including discounts on bar and bistro pur- chases, eligibility to join our cricket, bowls, angling, pool or dance clubs, discounts on special event tickets and much more.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15 Major Projects/events

New/expansion to training net facilities Additional training net facilities have been jointly identified as an important requirement for the future of both the senior and junior sections of the club. From preliminary discussions with the council, the majority of the funding for any new facilities would have to come from the state or federal government as well as the cricket club; the local councils budget is spread thin across a large number of sporting facilities in the Hob- son’s Bay area. The majority of the local council funding is currently allocated towards maintenance of ex- isting facilities and justifying new or additional nets at Altona will be challenging. Sunday Bash

Our U15s won the “Sunday Bash” Twenty20 title run by Gellibrand CC. The boys won all their 3 games con- vincingly and went on to win the grand final. Congratulations on winning another piece of silverware and $400 for the club (prize donated by Ascot Vale Sports and Trophies). Our U17½ team also competed and won two out of their three matches but missed out narrowly on making the grand final. The Gellibrand “Sunday Bash” com- petition has now been run for three seasons, and Altona has notched up wins each year (U17s 2013 & 2014) and this season U15s.

Altona CC v Altona Footy Club Twenty20

Our U15 team took on the U16 football team in a fun Twenty20 match held on the day of the Altona Foot- ball Junior Club registration day. This is an important event demonstrating collaboration between the two clubs that share the facilities. The Colin Davies trophy was awarded to the eventual winners the U15 cricket team by Colin Davies in person.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

ALTONA C.C. 52nd ANNUAL J.C. CRAIG SHIELD (formerly Hatch) REPORT

This seasons team included 7 Altona players, 2 players from Point Cook, 2 from Geelong West and 1 from Seabrook. Included in this group are 3 sons of former Altona 1st XI players . Sam Tipper (Altona) Daniel Reed-Sharry (Geelong West) Jack Hiatt (Altona) Max Brown (Geelong West) Aaron Wedding (Altona) Joshua Litherland (Point Cook) Rhys Mutch (Altona) Quinn Gilmore (Point Cook) Kosta Arapidis (Altona) Callum Hands (Seabrook) Cooper Mitchell (Altona) Cody McAllion (Aberfeldie) 2014/15 J.C. Craig Shield Connar Otterbach (Altona) Coach Andrew Wesley

Thank you to the committee for allowing me the pleasure of coaching the JC Craig (formerly Hatch Shield) team this year. It was very rewarding to work with such an enthusiastic and great bunch of young men in this year’s carnival. Whilst the re- sults didn’t go our way we unearthed future talent by playing 7 Altona players of which 5 were bottom age (one of those 3 years out of his age group!). It was fantastic to have the support of current and past players of the Altona Cricket Club as- sist in the build-up and during the tournament, these included; Ben Davies (Assistant Coach), Adam Brown, Simon Jackson, Daniel Mackenzie, Tommi Wesley and Mark Mitchell The team had a great tournament with the ball and in the field, restricting all teams to achievable totals, however we failed to score enough runs with the bat to compliment the bowling and fielding performances. Stand out performances for the tournament include: Cooper Mitchell – 28 v Williamstown & 4/17 v Yarraville Daniel Reed/Sharry - 3/23 v Williamstown Max Brown – 55 v Sunshine Joshua Litherland – 27 V Sunshine Jack Hiatt – 3/12 v Melton Cody McAllion – 28 v Werribee Aaron Wedding – 35 v Williamstown & 29 v Sunshine

With a very talented group coming through the under 13 and 15 age groups, I would expect at least 8 representatives from Altona in next year’s team. This provides us the opportunity to continue to grow our own 1st grade Snr cricketer’s of the future. A big thank you to parents and supporters who provided great support and presented our club in such a great light with the presentation of the clubrooms and the best lunch in the competition and to Narelle Brown for being our scorer throughout! Lastly I’d like to acknowledge the best administrator in the business – Ian Mackenzie. Without Ian, I (along with many oth- ers) would be left floundering, his dedication to ensure we had uniforms, balls, scorebook, clean rooms, money for um- pires, practice match opponent, my cricket transfers and so much more, is just the tip of the iceberg for what he does for the club Andrew Wesley

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB 52nd ANNUAL REPORT - SEASON 2014/15

ALTONA ALL ABILITIES CONTINUE TO SHINE

12 All Ability Cricket Teams from across Victoria ventured out to Casey Fields on the 22nd February to battle it out for the title of the best All Ability Cricket Team in the State. Our boys battled hard and per- formed admirably against some quality teams. In the end we just missed out on the Grand Final and had to settle for third place for the 2nd year in a row. Our boys performed admirably with our best per- formers for the tournament being John Loy and Jamie Ronaldson Our 10 over tonk side also performed with aplomb by going through the tournament undefeated. Un- fortunately at this level finals are not contested. Our Team Manager, Lorraine Woodman, should feel extremely proud of the performances displayed by both the All Ability A side and the All Ability 10 over tonk team. Thank you also to Hobsons Bay City Council for funding the travel arrangements for the day with Hob- sons Bay Financial Services (Bendigo Bank).

Lorraine Woodman (front centre) Team Manager, with the Altona All Abilities Cricket Team who came third in the A Section of the Victorian Casey Fields All Abilities Cricket Tournament held at Casey Fields Sunday 22 February 2015.
