Presidents Report

The 2015/16 season marked the 30th anniversary of the merged Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club and it will remain etched in our memories for a very long time. Winning a First XI premiership is an outstanding achievement by any measure and one that everyone involved with our Club can be proud of and celebrate.

As I always mention, our aim is to be a successful cricket club measured by our ability to provide quality facilities and an inclusive environment in partnership with the community to attract, develop, and retain talented and passionate players and supporters.

We also have a crucial role as part of the Victorian cricket pathway to produce quality players across all Cricket Victoria high performance levels of cricket.

We had confidence that if we achieved the above, and with the right focus on field, that we would achieve this reward.

Cricket

I would like to reflect on some of the key factors leading to our success this year

In recent seasons, we have worked towards the following goals, which we identified. These included our on-field mental and physical toughness, the need to have an enjoyable club, recruitment and leadership.

We are always talking about the Lions spirit, our culture and what this means to us.

The appointment of Michael O’Sullivan as Coach in 2014 was critical for us achieving our ambitions. When we appointed Michael, we felt we had a short window of opportunity to win a premiership whilst we had our current senior players. Therefore, although we faced disappointment again in 2014/15 when we narrowly missed finals, we did not dwell, we learnt, and from that reflection together with more hard work, we succeeded.

Despite some significant injuries, and the ongoing family stress for the O’Sullivan’s our season has been a remarkable success. Achieving the following:

 First XI finishing the home and away season Minor Premiers;  The Club finishing third in the overall Club Championship;  The Second XI playing another finals campaign;  First XI (white ball) Premiers; and ultimately  The First XI (two day) Premiers. We had seventeen players play First XI this season but I can’t emphasise it enough that every player at the club played a role in our success, and they all supported, encouraged and pushed our first and second XI teams hard to perform. So thankyou to all the players

2

I need to mention a special thankyou to Sean Pietersz who after the 2014/15 season stepped down from coaching. We were so fortunate that Sean stepped back into the role pre-season whilst Michael was overseas for 3 months.

We were also pleased when Phil Lovell returned from Darwin and slid back into the role managing the Harvey Watts Development Squad and Assistant Coach of the 3rd and 4th XI’s due to the resignation of Chris Cunningham.

Together with the efforts of Wayne Stewart and Chris Moore, the Squad took another step forward this season with how it operates and the quality of the young players continues to grow.

On that note, I am pleased to report that all of our coaching staff, including Steve Cashen, are already re-appointed for next season.

Importantly I would like to congratulate all the other Premiers in men’s and women’s Premier Cricket this season and to the Monash Tigers on winning the Club Championship; something that we aspire to.

Finance

I am extremely pleased to report that the Club has posted a profit this season, managing to turn around several years of loss. More details are in the Treasurer’s report but this profit is on top of the prize money we have received from Cricket Victoria.

We have achieved this through maintaining a very strong focus on cost control throughout the season, together with the efforts of our supporters such as Michael Fletcher organising our very successful T20 Breakfast function. Throughout the season, the playing group were amazing with their support, organising and attending social functions and supporting our sponsors such as KFC and The Harp Hotel. That said, although we achieved our fundraising target on the social side, we did not achieve our overall fundraising target.

We are grateful to all our sponsors for their generous support, and we achieved our sponsorship target for this season.

This financial achievement has provided the Committee with the confidence to keep going with the current operating plans, including the coaching and playing budget. The Committee did not make the decision lightly to increase the budget last season but made it with the objective of remaining competitive on field. To remain competitive in the competition, the Committee is determined to stay on par with the coaching and playing budget.

Operations

I am pleased to report that Schramms Sports Club under the Chair of Mal Smith is progressing with Council the plan for the lower ground pavilion. With funding from Council, State Government and Cricket Victoria, we will hopefully commence building in the 2017/18 financial year.

3

We would like to think that the condition of the main pavilion could be improved in the near term. We are grateful to Council for couching the this season, and I would like to recognise the effort from our curator David Blackley leading up to and during the finals campaign.

It was pleasing to have some new volunteers on board this year including Mike Delves and Alice Barrow who joined the Committee and thankyou to Jean Emmins and Marita Cook for the popular lunches and afternoon teas, and support for our social functions! I would like to say a special thankyou to Marita for her patience, understanding and support that she provides to me.

Throughout the year, the Presidents and Delegates have spent much time with Cricket Victoria establishing the premier cricket strategy. The Committee will re-focus our strategic plan for future seasons to ensure alignment. Cricket Victoria is determined to ensure cricket in Victoria remains relevant and appeals to everyone long into the future.

An important matter to report is the implementation of Cricket ’s Accreditation Scheme, which over time will influence funding to Clubs from Cricket Australia.

Whilst it is pleasing to report that we rated well across the fifteen categories in the Scheme, there is always room for improvement, mostly in areas that the Committee has already identified. However, the main category, which we need to do more, is facilitating female involvement in the game both on and off field.

Due to the efforts of Wayne Stewart, once again we “opened the doors” at Schramms for a number of Cricket Victoria and community matches.

• 2 weekends of School Sports Victoria selection trials & matches • VMCU U/18 Grand Final • BHRDCA U/18 & U/16 Practice Matches • VMCU U/21 Round 2 Match • U/14, U/16, U/18 Inner East Emus Pathway Trials plus 5 Matches including two Quarter Finals • Deaf Exhibition Match • 3 Days of Infinity Cricket Finals Games (Community Cricket). As mentioned last season, these types of events at Schramms are important opportunities for us to show case our facilities to Cricket Victoria. The Committee believes Schramms Reserve is in a great location, with good facilities and easy access from the city, to be a key cricketing venue in the City of Manningham and we will continue to work with Council with the aim of developing the facilities accordingly.

In closing, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and support of everyone (as listed) on the three Committees and together with those mentioned above also say thank you to the following.

4

Our volunteers and parents who have helped throughout the season on match day and Thursday nights, particularly: Graeme, Ilva and Glenn Woollard, Kris Hinz, Michael Fletcher, David White, Almaaz and Emrana Alavi Rowan Kayll and Ric Cattanach.

Bill Jackson who tirelessly ran the raffle, which raised over $4000 to purchase new honour boards for our Life Members, Hall of Fame Legends and Don Patrick Award recipients. James Considine who continues to put an amazing amount of time into providing all the great footage and social media we enjoy. Tim Considine for his ongoing support and to acknowledge his role as a Cricket Victoria Director, and a special acknowledgment to Roger Page who has put down his scorers pen after 40 years.

Finally, as always, I would like to again acknowledge all of our great sponsors and also Cricket Victoria and Manningham Council whose support is invaluable.

Go Lions!

Club Coach Season Review

Premiership Edition

Michael O’Sullivan

We are the 2015/16 CV Premier Cricket Premiers. A special experience and outstanding performance that will forever resonate in our thoughts. The triumph capped off a superb season which also saw the 1st XI take out the one day (white ball) title as well as finishing the home & away season Minor Premiers. We also finished 3rd in the Club Championship and the 2nd XI excelled again and were only 5 runs short of playing in their 3rd Grand Final in a row.

Winning the club's 9th premiership was a fitting result and much deserved reward for the commitment, determination and tireless work by all at this great and historic club.

After the disappointment of the previous year the players took on a greater responsibility and responded magnificently and were unbelievably consistent throughout the home and away season finishing clear on top of the ladder, while losing just 2 games.

The elimination & semifinals were classic finals' battles. They were tough, tense and tight, with the semifinal against Prahran an epic encounter which required every bit of our collective energy, skill and will and a herculean performance by our spiritual leader Andrew Perrin to ultimately prevail in the toughest game of the year.

We were the best team all year and produced our best cricket with a complete performance on the biggest stage. Our attack was sensational; they all bowled superbly, rolling the reigning premiers Ringwood for 96. We then dug in and amassed an extraordinary 435 on the back of a double century (226no) from our captain & John Scholes medalist Peter Dickson; arguably the best batting performance in Premier Cricket history.

We are all excited to be part of history and understand that we are very privileged to be premiership players as over the last 15 seasons only 7 clubs have won one (multiple winners), which means from 270 club attempts only 7 have prevailed. Although we all want to win a premiership and we dream about it, it certainly doesn't define who we are. Too many great players and great teams have never won one. What it did define, was our effort, our attitude, how much we have learned, our strong will, our ability to perform under extreme pressure as well as our cohesiveness and camaraderie. We also endured our fair share of adversity and many challenges throughout the season and showed great courage & resilience.

Significantly there were important elements that made us the group, club, team we are today.

Firstly our A.C.T.I.O.N.S. and our values established by the players reflect our club, our culture and our game and shows how this & quality people drive performance.

Adding to this we now have players who are consistent & reliable and want to make a difference and happy to be the driver and not the passenger anymore.

Most importantly and critically significant when you drill down into our games and performances; we shared the load & when it was someone's turn to put their head over the ball, they did. We also shared the load as a club and we were unbelievably cohesive on & off the field. We, as a

15

club did things together; the players, coaches, committee, volunteers and parents, whether it was being social, putting the covers down, making Thursday dinners or cleaning the club rooms; we enjoyed each other's company.

More importantly, this was a club premiership rather than a 1st XI one!

The club was one and there was no better evidence than the celebration that took place at the FDCC on the Monday after lifting the premiership cup. Everyone felt included and that is why there were so many supporters, volunteers, parents, girlfriends, wives etc as they all felt they owned a little piece of it.

It was an enormous & special performance by the players but it was also an enormous effort by the greater FDCC and that's everyone.

A special season gave us many highlights, outstanding performances and memorable moments. I would like to recognize and acknowledge the following as well as our Premiership Players.

. It would be impossible to do this role without the encouragement, patience and inspiration of my lovely wife Carolyn and children Emily, Amy, Des, Max & Anh . Graeme Cook deserves the title of Premiership President more than anyone I have ever known. He has orchestrated a brought together an outstanding team of people and we are very fortunate to have a person of not just his wisdom & professional standing but someone who inspires and leads from the front. Apart from his all in approach in his role as President, he is forever attending meetings both at FDCC & CV, checking in on his people, the ground, facility and has this ability to makes things happen and get the job done. I would also like to acknowledge Graeme's wife Marita for the extraordinary amount of work she does in, around and away from the club to make the place run smoothly and thank them very much for their great support and friendship. . Premierships don't just fall out of the air! They come from much planning, strategy, thought, list management, tough decisions, culture and involve an exorbitant amount of time, effort as well as persistence & patience. That's why people such as Ben Waterman & Leigh Watts have played such an important role behind the scenes. They do many little things that go unnoticed that really makes the club tick. Their generosity with their time & assistance has been exceptional. More importantly their positive outlook & support to me personally & professionally as well as their encouragement and great sense of enjoyment and friendship has truly made my time at this club a special life experience. . The same can be said of Jeff Harvey & Alan Melbourne who head up the cricket sub - committee as Chairman & Secretary and play an enormous and critically important role in looking after all things cricket. They make sure that everything from training & playing conditions, resources, coaches, planning, recruiting as well as the Academy and development programs are working as they should be. On behalf of the coaches & playing group, we are extremely grateful for the work and time you both put in as you bring a wealth of wisdom, knowledge, commitment & experience from your many years of great service to cricket & this club. . To the other committee members in Stephen Stanley, Alex Steenberg, Wayne Stewart, Alice Barrow, Mick Delves & Leigh Watts; we (on behalf of the players, coaches et al), appreciate your professionalism, time, skill & effort in making this place work & always looking to improve it. . We are very grateful for the special work & time that past presidents in Mal Smith & Tim Considine & others continue to put in to improve the facility and work with local council for our benefit.

16

. Special thanks to our exceptional volunteers & special supporters particularly Graeme, Ilva and Glenn Woolard, Roger Page, Kris Hinz, Billy Jackson, Ralston Wood and all his cohorts including Denis, Bruno et al and the parents who have assisted on match days, social functions and Thursday night dinners. . Special acknowledgement & recognition to Roger Page on an outstanding career and achievement in scoring for FDCC. We all thank you for your great work, wit, encouragement & support for 650 'odd' games; it will never be the same! . It was sensational to have such wonderful people in Jean Emmins & Marita Cook prepare such outstanding lunches and afternoon teas as well as assist in many other functions and areas around the club. Many thanks for your wonderful support. . I would like to acknowledge & congratulate our premiership curator David Blackley for his efforts & skill in preparing and maintaining our turf & ground. We also acknowledge your extra special efforts during our finals campaign in relation to center wicket training & your superb track vs Prahran in the semi - final. Remember Blackers; this is the most important 22 yards in all of Doncaster! . We are very fortunate in having the number one Administration Manager in the competition in Wayne Stewart and he deserves as much as anyone to enjoy and bask in the glory of our success this season. As well as being always available, he does so much for the club during the week and his enthusiasm, passion & encouragement around the place as well as his ability to 'to get the job done' is first class. He continues to go above & beyond the call of duty. . I am extremely grateful for the assistance & superb support from the club’s assistant, support & specialist coaches, captains & match committee which included Sean Pietersz, Steve Cashen, Phil Lovell, Peter Dickson, Eben Martin, Mick Sacchetta, Mark Sheedy and others who filled in. . The skippers in Eb, Dicko, Sacc & Sheeds deserve special mention for their untiring efforts, insight and understanding of what we are trying to achieve. They all worked tirelessly and gave so much time, thought and support to their respective teams and go above & beyond week in and week out in their many game day roles. They all showed and played with great leadership skills, passion and poise. . An extra special mention to my co coach in Seanos Pietersz, who retired before the start of the season but he wasn't retired for long!! With yours truly being away in Germany, Seanos put his hand up to come back & take on the head coaching duties which was sensational as he would have been unbelievably missed. His outstanding and unyielding support and encouragement of me and the job at hand was extraordinary. I always have said that a good assistant is better than a good coach as he makes the coach look great. We weren't just thrilled to have Sean back but became unbelievably excited when he decided to stay on for the entire season. He is not just a terrific coach; he is a great friend and an outstanding person with great player management & senior coaching skills & is a senior first class coach in his own right. We also congratulate he and wife Bridie on the birth of their 3rd child and first son in Aubrey to add to their lovely family with their two daughters Miller & Jess. . We were fortunate again to have Steve Cashen as specialist coach within our coaching group. He provides a wealth of experience, knowledge and skill that is difficult to find and our players benefited greatly from his time, effort and many chats. . We were extremely fortunate and pleased to have been able to 'recruit' Fabulous Phil Lovell back to Schramms after his successful stint with Darwin cricket. He filled an important void with his knowledge of the East & other recruiting areas and players as well as being appointed one of our assistant coaches and managing the Harvey Watts Academy (HWA) & Development Squad.

17

. I would also like to thank & acknowledge the efforts of Chris Moore in his role of Development Coach for the HWA and together with the assistance of Wayne Stewart & Phil Lovell make up a formidable team. . Many thanks to all our supporters, player sponsors, club sponsors, parents & families of the FDCC for all their positive support and encouragement throughout the entire season. Special mention to Mick Fletcher, Almaaz & Emrana Alavi, Craig Banthorpe, John Rudd, Mick Fletcher, David White, Peter Korkolis, Rohan Kyall, Gary Trevenen, Andrew Martin, Rick Cattanach & others who subbed in and helped with team management, scoring, dinner & other duties during the season. . It was terrific to once again have a team manager and we thank and congratulate Mick Delves for the part he played in our special season. His support & assistance was critical in making the game day run smoothly & efficiently. . We wish James Considine well in his 'early' retirement/rest after giving the club outstanding service as a player, leader, captain and putting in much time and effort to provide all the great vision from all the game recordings as well as looking after the social media we enjoy so professionally. Many thanks for your enormous assistance.

On the playing side:

. There is no doubt Peter Dickson's performances in the final series were heroic and he played arguable the best innings in Premier Cricket history. Although he won the John Scholes medal for the best player in the game and his finals series netted him an amazing 418 runs @ 209 with innings of 226rh, 80no, 77 & 35; it is his leadership and what he does for his players and the club that makes him so endearing & irresistible. Dicko's the best captain & leader I have been involved with and you would pick him if he was averaging zero. That's how important he is. He leads men, he inspires them, they go with him, he's strong, he's tough and he also cares. You deserved everything you got Dicko; let's do it again! . Matthew Frith once again excelled and had an all-round first class season. Frithos was at his best when the competition was toughest and it was no surprise that he played pivotal roles and was a key player in all our 4 finals wins. He is a big game, big time performer and always put his hand up when we needed him during the season. His finals performances were superb and showed tremendous courage & will to play 3 clutch innings as well as take an extraordinary 3/2 in 9 overs to knock over Ringwood in the Big Dance. . Tim Sheehan was the perfect No 3 and like Frith shone when it was toughest and played his most important innings in the 2 biggest games of the season. Shifta was outstanding in both Grand Finals successes and played crucial innings in both. He was in at 1/10 and it was 2/17 in the white ball GF when Frith joined him and they put on 73 for the 3rd wicket. When Tim eventually departed with the score at 158 he had contributed 60 and had done a superb job. The red ball GF was extremely tense when Dicko joined Shifta at 2/36 and with the pressure cooker it was, we had the right two players in! They bunkered down and set the game up with an outstanding 110 run partnership which in a Grand Final was gold dust. Shifta was also great assistance to Dicko & the team with his experience, poise and leadership. His fielding, particularly his slip catching is the best I have seen in Premier Cricket. . We were ecstatic to secure boom recruit Trent Lawford during the preseason as the club pro. The ex South Australian Redbacks & Adelaide Strikers player played a key role in our success. Lawf is the most destructive cricketer I have witnessed and a genuine game changer with a classic x factor & he didn't let us down. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Lawf for his fantastic achievements on winning the Arthur Liddicut Medal as

18

our Club Champion, for making the Sydney Sixers BBL team as well as being runner up in the Ryder Medal. Lawf also took the Premier competition by storm and dominated with both bat and ball. His best all round performance came in the One Day white ball final where he took us to a competitive score smashing 48 off 34 balls which included four sixes and then bowled us to victory taking 4/21 off eight overs to win man of the match honours. He also bowled a mammoth 283 overs for the season, 50 more overs than any other quick in the Premier competition. . Andrew Perrin had an extraordinary season; was our No 1 bowler, winning the bowling award, the Alex Cox Memorial Trophy as well as the Don Patrick Medal. Although Pez missed a number of games and played injured often, he took a staggering 50 wickets @ 10.62 and clearly had the best KPI's in the competition. Pez was enormous for us and his energy & passion for the club was unsurpassed. Pez's effort, courage & performances when the game was really & truly on the line was as breathtaking as it was extraordinary. He single handedly bowled us into three finals; the white ball final taking 3/13 in his 4 twenty20 overs vs Ringwood, the elimination final vs Northcote where at 2/50 they needed just 129 runs with Stoinis in control. Pez rolls both Stoinis and captain & Ryder Medalist Taylor in 2 balls, finishing with 4/21 to progress us to the semi - final vs. Prahran. Then when all looked lost in the semi he bowled us into the Grand Final with one of the greatest finals spells of all time, taking 7/71. This achievement was made all the more amazing as he carried significant injuries into each of these games. We also congratulate the great man for making the Premier Cricket Team of the year and more importantly has been rewarded with a two year state contract to train & play for Tasmania and we wish him every success. . We all acknowledge & applaud Jacques Augustin in being awarded the best clubman in a premiership year. Jacques was absolutely sensational in his efforts all season at training and the way he cared & looked after his lion's mates. This was especially difficult in situation he found himself in with Banners taking over his role as our preferred wicketkeeper to kick off the season. He should be proud of how he handled himself & supported his fellow players throughout the entire season and was rewarded with the position of 12th man in the grand final for his consistent performances during the year and wicket keeping sensationally for the 1st XI when Banners was away with the Vic U19 team. He deservedly was presented with the special Doug Rumble Trophy for Best Clubman for his great efforts, selflessness, leadership excellence & work around the club during the season. He also showed a unbelievable sense of clubmanship & spirit at all times and I don't believe there has ever been a more worthy winner. . Congratulations to Nat Vardi on a stellar year as well as making his maiden century (171no) vs. Dandenong. His 638 runs at 39.88 placed him 8th on the competition's runs aggregate and is great reward for his continued hard work, patience & persistence. Vard's also had an extremely mature innings of 43 in the GF and more or less assisted in icing the game with a patient and well thought out partnership of 128 with Dicko. Vard's break out year after winning the coach’s award last year was also due to his commitment, attitude and dedication and is a great role model to our young & formative players. His improvement & development continues to gain momentum and I have no doubt there are big things around the corner for Vards. . We congratulate both Liam Banthorpe and Nick Fletcher on being selected in the Victorian U19 team. Fletch & Banners represented their side with distinction and were terrific ambassadors for our club. Liam also represented Victoria in the futures league & played his part in the 1st XI's triumphant year. With some impressive innings & partnerships during the season Banners ended up with a respectable 392 runs @ 24.5 and along with his 39 catches & 1 stumping and his notable GF knock of 45 & 6 excellent catches, he is developing into one of Victoria's young brigade on the rise. Fletch in his first

19

year bowling at this level due to Jacques now keeping in the 2nd XI excelled and not just collected a magnificent 25 wickets @ 17.24 but also picked up the bowling trophy for being the 2nd XI's best bowler. A rare feat which makes him the best cricket utility & most flexible player going around. . Jack Blyth & Matthew Bremner did some great hard yards over the season at the top of the order and showed the way in some very tricky conditions. They are both very responsible & gritty players and are at their best when the going is tough. They had four significant opening partnerships of over 50 with 103 being their best vs Frankston Peninsula in the last home & away game. Both players certainly did their bit as opening batsmen with Jack making 347 @ 31.5 & Brem 388 @ 29.84 with a sensational energy sapping 129 vs. Prahran in 42 degrees. They are both brilliant in the field and took 21 catches between them. Brem also won the 2nd XI batting award making 399 runs at an excellent average of 44.33 which gave him a superb total of 787 club runs @ 35.8. . Our vice-captain and spinning all-rounder Ejaaz Alavi had a terrific season as leader and was great support and back up to Dicko and played a critical role with the ball. His maturity, poise and class as fill in captain was sensational and became the youngest player to ever captain the 1st XI at Fitzroy Doncaster. Ejaaz had a profound impact with the ball, bowling the 5th most overs (215) in the competition, capturing 27 wickets @ 21.59 while going for a miserly 2.71 runs/over which was the 3rd best in premier cricket. This meant he never let the opposition off the hook and supported the bowling group with his skill, intelligence & by keeping the pressure on was the perfect partnership bowler. He also had an outstanding twenty20 series bowling his 16 overs for only 103 runs and taking 10 wkts @ 10.3 with an extraordinary economy of 6.44. Importantly Ejaaz had his best batting performance of the season in the elimination final vs Northcote. He was involved in the two best partnerships of the game (65 & 81unbeaten) when we were under extreme pressure in both innings and was instrumental in us progressing to the semifinal. . What a terrific way for Ducky to retire from Premier Cricket. After 179 stellar games Steve Duckworth is a premiership player and no one deserves this accolade more than him. He was an important cog of this exceptional attack that claimed an unprecedented 218 wickets at 18.45 and as a group had their best bowling performance of the year in the biggest game of the year. Ducky used his guile, experience and skill to weave his own magic in the GF, bowing out with his best performance of the season; bowling 16 overs which included 9 maidens and taking 2/24 as well as capturing the biggest wicket of his career in the competition's best batsmen in David King. Ducky finished the year with 27 wickets at 18.75 without playing until round 7; so it was a fantastic way to finish a sensational career which netted him 305 wickets at 24.64. The duck will be remembered for much more than his cricket abilities as he was an outstanding club person who went above & beyond his duties around the club in mentoring young players, initiating & running social activities, organising and looking after the club clothing, coaching the HWA and development squad and was awarded the prestigious Doug Rumble Trophy for best clubman in 2013/14. We thank the Duck for his years of service and wish him well as he continues his career at the Balwyn Cricket Club. . Congratulations to Chris Moore on winning the coach’s award for his persistence, consistency, commitment, attitude and dedication to training. He is a superb example & role model on how to dedicate yourself, concentrate & work hard and his rehab work in coming back from a significant injury preseason was outstanding. Moorey's development & progression especially with his strength & conditioning was sensational. He also was the go to man for our many injuries during the season and performed at a high standard whenever he was in the 1st XI. He played 11 games taking 16 wickets @ 27.3. The opportunities for him & others with Perrin and Duckworth moving on are considerable and perfect timing and we look forward to bigger and better things from Moorey.

. I would like to acknowledge and recognise the following players for being part of the 1st XI at some stage during the year and playing such an important role in our overall success & triumph of 2015/16 season. They are: Lee Stockdale who played so courageously vs St Kilda and after being KO'd got back up to single handedly get us across the line by smashing 14 runs off the last over of the day (he only needed 5 balls!). Stocky ended up with 43no of just 31 balls. Stock was also a member of the one day premiership team. Jack Rudd who played the first 5 games of the season in the 1st XI but unfortunately didn't get the opportunities he or we would have liked. Ruddy went back to the two's and performed admirably winning the L.J. Tully Shield for the best 2nd XI player and capped it off with an astonishing double century; where he scored 222 of only 239 balls which included 27 fours & 6 sixes. More importantly he handled himself outstandingly well & is a terrific role model and mentor to our younger players and is waiting patiently for his next opportunity. Four players in Matt Grace, Josh White, Kam Nayager & Glenn Maxwell played one game and all acquitted themselves very well and competed at a high level. We also congratulate both Matt Grace & Josh White as the one game they played was their 1st XI debut. Daine Watts was selected to assist as one of the 12th & 13th men during the finals series and his efforts, attitude and hard work across all the finals were of the highest standard and he like Jacques Augustin (official 12th man for the Grand Final) was rewarded with the opportunity of fielding during the grand final (Dicko & Pez injured) which they both richly deserved. Jacques is acknowledged above for being the recipient of the Doug Rumble Trophy for the best clubman in the 2015/16 season & playing superbly in the 1st XI when the chance presented itself.

. There were also a number of players who showed development & progression in their performances which included: Noah Korkolis won the Warren Hockey Memorial Shield as the most improved/best Under 21 player. He worked his way up from the 4th XI after finishing his VCE and showed sensational patience, understanding and superb skill which saw him play and perform at a very high level in 2nd XI in the last 6 games of the season. He partnered Ruddy in two massive partnerships being 146 & 159 respectively, finishing the season with 623 runs @ 31.2 overall & making 254 2nd XI runs at 36.3 with top scores of 81 & 67 opening the batting. Sam Milne received the R. G. Wood Shield for the Development Player of the Year. As well as coming through our Academy (HWA) he was selected for the National U17 Championships playing for Northern Territory and acquitted himself very well. He still has a year and a half to go at St Kevin's College and is a prodigious cricket & sporting talent and we look forward to seeing him progress in the years ahead. We are very pleased that Charlie Simondson is playing at the FDCC as he is a very talented cricketer and his school and representative cricket reflects this. His 61 vs. Prahran before Xmas was a match winning innings and showed he will be a player to watch. Mitch Chappell was probably the recruit of the year progressing from the 4ths during the preseason to the 2nd XI where he performed as though he had been there before. His batting & wicket keeping was of a high standard and his training attitude & effort is first class. He made 333 runs@ 22.2. Watch this space. Liam Smith after winning the 4th XI batting award last season has backed it up with another superb development & progression year amassing 473 runs @ 33.8, including 2 magnificent centuries and a superb 81 in his debut innings in the 2nd XI. He also won the 3rd XI batting award & collected the H.J.Noonan Shield for the Champion 3rd XI player (best). Kieren Vanderwal after taking out the 4th XI bowling award last year, has done a Smithy and followed up by winning the 3rd XI bowling award with 17 wickets @24.88. Alex Cattanach also

21

had a very consistent season finishing with 18 wickets @ 19.67 and was the backbone of the 4th XI attack. A number of players in the 3rd & 4th XI also stepped up and have developed & matured throughout the season. These include Josh Cruse (new from Bendigo) and Alex Smith left arm orthodox from Nth Balwyn Cricket Club. Others to also progress & perform during the season were James Trevenen, Vasish Vasan, Ben White and Joel Reid. We are looking forward to Matthew Bullen being back to full tilt next season as his numbers and what he has to offer are extremely encouraging. 18 wickets @ 15.7 is a lot to like. Along with Joe Blyth, Josh White & Zac Parr who missed most of the year with significant injuries should see some red hot competition for places. Congratulations to first year player Rohan Saric-Skewes for winning the N.R.Dowell Shield - 4th XI Champion player award. Rohan made 304 runs @ 21.71 and took 13 catches & 5 stumpings and was a very important member of the 4th XI team. Bailey Eustance was elevated to the 3rd XI after consistent performances in the 4th XI of where he has won the batting award for 2015/16 making 218 runs @ 27.25

The club's future continues to be exciting and progressive. The exciting thing is we can get better as we have only scratched the surface of our capabilities.

Although the 1st XI excelled in the Final Series we have as a Club the skill & talent to progress much further.

There is so much more to achieve and we have much to do.

If we keep turning up for each other, keep turning up with effort & attitude and always be prepared,

WE CAN DO THIS AGAIN.

1st XI Season Review – Peter Dickson

2015 / 16 was a season both myself and my team mates will never forget. Cricket is all about belief and momentum and chasing down over 240 in the first game of the year against St. Kilda showed us we were capable of matching it with the best teams. Lee Stockdale was instrumental in getting us over the line in this match hitting 17 off the final over off test spinner Michael Beer. Our one day form in the first five games was very solid with some strong wins against powerful premier teams including Melbourne, St. Kilda, Footscray and Melbourne University. We had a slight slip up against Monash Tigers but went in after the first block of one day games 4- 1. Despite our positive start we also recognized we were in this very position the previous year and the hard work was only just about to start with two day cricket commencing. The next two, two day games saw us comprehensively take care of Greenvale and Kingston Hawks, both games just falling short of outright points. After this we went into a four game block of T20 action where we saw some amazing cricket from our experienced players. Lawford, Frith and Perrin all had fantastic campaigns in the T20's and this proved to be a great springboard into the next phase of our season. With one game left before Christmas we played Prahran where we had Lawford and Perrin both missing due to state duties and injury. Despite toiling hard and long Prahran made a well compiled 300+ score. The following week we watched a magnificent century from Matthew "Billy" Bremner but unfortunately fell around 10 runs short. A tough loss to swallow, but all in all a solid start to the season and went into the break on top of the premier cricket ladder.

With a good win in low scoring conditions against Northcote in the first game back it secured us a home final in the one day final, the first time the club had ever competed for this title. In bizarre circumstances the fixture saw us play Camberwell in the first two day game after Christmas and then meet them in the one day final the next day. After securing 6 points on day 1 of the two day match we went into the one day final full of confidence and definitely believing we could take the honour’s once again. Despite us being the form side, almost all other premier cricket captains had said Camberwell would be to good, most quoting Simon Hill would be the difference. Simon Hill may well have been the best batsman in both side's but we were a much better side and as they say a champion side always beats a team of champions. We had a very strong win compiling 218 and winning by 46 runs. Lawford was man of the match, but Frith and Sheehan both unbelievable with the bat. We went onto beat Geelong, Dandenong and Frankston with very comfortable wins ending our season with only two losses and fifteen wins. The highlight of these matches was Nat Vardi's incredible 172no against Dandenong.

Finals were upon us, first up Northcote. Both finals were extremely tough contests! Northcote were 2 for 50 chasing 178 to be all out for 78. Whilst Prahran 3 for 210 and 4 for 230 chasing 310 to eventually be bowled out for 275. A couple of great fighting wins but also some fantastic personal performances. Senior players really stood up during these games with fighting 50's in both matches to Frith along with regular wickets, whilst Perrin was the star with 4 wickets and 7 wickets respectively. All players fought hard but cream rises to the top and both these players should be extremely proud with what they achieved.

GRAND FINAL! Guess what, everyone said Ringwood would be too good again.

As captain I have now not slept for two weeks throughout finals. Amazingly I arrived at training on Tuesday and watched our players train, compete fiercely and respect the players and coaching staff who gave us their time to help out at training. At this stage I knew we were unbeatable! We not only had gun players in form but we also had the best team culture I had ever been a part of. The rest is history; we completed the perfect match for the most important game of the year. The usual suspects were relentless with the ball including Duckworth, Frith, Alavi and Lawford. We went on to make 435 in which we had great contributions from all batsman.

We have now secured both titles and can be crowned 2015 / 16 premier. So many young talented players such as Vardi, Banthorpe, Alavi and Blythe having their personal best seasons and can call themselves premiership players along with our experienced campaigners. To all coaching staff we are so very blessed to have a group a people who all believed in us and did everything they could to help us along the way. To the President and committee, an amazing job off the field to give us the best conditions and support to help us. To all players thank you for making my job easy.

To retiring player Steven Duckworth, good luck at your new club and congratulations on a wonderful career. Very much underrated player who never let his team mates down and for many years carried the attack. Andrew Perrin all the best in Tasmania, you are a ready-made first class player ready to take the big stage.

To all else I'm looking forward to starting pre-season.

2nd XI Season Review – Eben Martin

Finishing as runners up the previous season, as a second eleven we had a lot to prove that we were still serious contenders for the flag this year, and having the taste of bitter defeat from the year before, we were very hungry as a group for the ultimate prize this year. The club was full of quality players, which meant competition for spots was going to be hot especially within the top two grades, and this was clearly seen with a number of long term First XI players spending the first few games of the season in the seconds. Our season was off to a perfect start on grand final day eve, with an essentially flawless victory over the saints, historically a very strong side. Matthew Bremner started his season off nicely with a well compiled 64. This was just the start of what was to come for Brem, as he amassed further scores off 43, 95, 72, 65no, by just round 6 to carry our batting line up, and as a result finally find himself back in the first eleven line up. This was true testament to his determination and skill, which was in full flight as he scored his top score of 129 against Prahran in the First XI only a few round later. The first block of one day games, presented a few challenges to us as a side. There were a number of injuries to fast bowlers in the top two grades, which meant our stocks were depleted, however not only did we manage to cover these, we actually uncovered some hidden gems. Nick Fletcher was certainly one of these. More well renowned for his work behind the stumps, in Round 4 against Melbourne University, I threw Fletch the ball to come down the hill at the Uni Main. Not exactly knowing what to expect, what occurred next out did everybody’s expectations, and put Fletch in the spot light to be a future First Eleven Bowler. In his first ever spell of bowling he showed supreme aggression, accuracy and very good pace to dismiss some of Uni’s top order bats, and finished with the figures of 3/38 (10). Just to prove that this was not a fluke, the very next game against Melbourne he returned figures of 3/21 (10). During this time, he was recognized with selection in the Victorian Under 19 team for the national carnival, and had some good success at national level. He took his first 5 for against Dandenong in Round 16, finishing with 7 wickets for the match. Also having a lot of talent with the bat, he will most definitely be an all-rounder to look out for in the coming years. By Round 7 we had 4 wins, and 2 losses (one of which was an extremely unlucky result where rain determined the result when we were in an almost unlosable position against last years’ premiers Monash), and we had our first two day game of cricket for the year against the new Kingston Hawks. This was a game we were expected to win easily, however there was nothing easy about obtaining these 6 points. After being bowled out for 201, a well below par score, we managed to snare victory from the jaws of defeat by just one run. After some time out of cricket, young quick Matt Bullen steamed in and took the last wicket to secure victory. He finished his return game in the seconds with figures of 3/34, and showed us what a class bowler he is. Unfortunately his season was somewhat interrupted by further injuries, however I am sure that if he can stay fit, he will be a serious contender for higher honours. The other stand out performance in this game which was crucial to our victory was Matt Grace. His first 2nd XI 50 came at a time when we were in deep trouble, and he was able to guide us, along with the help of the tail, to a score of just over 200. Matt is one of the cleanest strikers of a cricket ball you will ever see, and it was great to finally see this come to pass. He had had an up and down season with the ball to this point, and this certainly showed how valuable he was as an all-rounder. The T 20’s came and went as they do, and we won 2 from 4. A disappointing outcome, given the quality of our side, however again there were some individual performances which really showed the

26

quality of young players we have. Mitch Chappell had an opportunity to keep wicket due to state commitments of other players, and it was not only his work behind the stumps that impressed. Against Carlton in Round 9, he was able to resurrect our innings alongside Jack Rudd from 5/35 to ensure that we obtained a competitive total of 122. His stoke play, and composure under high pressure was very impressive and certainly showed what he has to offer. No doubt he will get his chance in the not too distant future. We went into the Christmas break after a strong defeat over Prahran in 6th position on the ladder, a position that probably reflected our season well to date, a highly talented team which at times had been a little inconsistent. But we knew what we had to do after the Christmas break, and we knew that we were able to defeat any team on any day. There has always been a strong ‘win from any position’ mentality within the second XI group, and this has, and will continue to, serve us very well.

With one one day game, and only four two day games before finals, it did not leave much time to get things right. The first game against Northcote was a slight setback with a heavy defeat to the hands of an understrength Northcote side. This was a very disappointing result; however the one positive to come out of this game was the return of big Joshie White. Having significant back troubles following the end of last season, he had taken some time to return to his best. However it was most definitely on show against the Dragons, taking 5/33 from 10 overs, and being our main shining light for the day.

The next four two day games held some strong challenges. Camberwell, the best team in the competition, were first up, and despite putting in a very gallant effort, we went down by just two wickets, with the Magpies surpassing our total of 285. But this was the start of a significant upturn in our batting performances. Up to date we had been very inconsistent with the bat, but in the next two games we scored over 300 both times, and against Dandenong scored 3/410. The game against Dandenong was one which I will never forget, and undoubtedly a young man by the name of Jack Rudd will remember for the rest of his life. Having never scored a senior hundred, Jack decided to go one better. Opening the batting at Schramms Reserve, Jack batted for 2 and a half sessions to compile a mammoth 222, an unbelievable performance which will forever be known as #Ruddy222. Jack had had a frustrating start to the season with limited opportunity, and had not had the success with the bat that he would have hoped. However he used this time to improve his bowling and became our number one spinner in the second XI. Now his batting was back, he had established himself as probably the best all round cricketer in the competition, with his fielding an absolute pleasure to watch. The other two batsmen who very much impressed that day were Noah Korkolis and Liam Smith. Having debuted 2 weeks earlier, and scoring 81 against Geelong the week prior, Noah continued his form with a very elegant 67. Noah looked completely comfortable at the crease and absolutely showed that he was not only ready to compete at this level, but indeed command at this level. The game against Dandenong was Liam Smith’s debut, and what better ways to show case his talent than to blast 81. Liam is a young man, but full of talent and maturity beyond his years, so definitely look out for his name over the coming years.

Come the final game for the season, we were assured a spot in the finals, and although suffering a loss, it was our performance on the second day to come within one wicket of securing a convincing reverse outright which left us full of confidence for our finals assault. We faced a

27

Camberwell Magpies team full of first eleven experiences at Camberwell in the Quarter Final. After being sent in on quite a juicy wicket, I knew this was our opportunity to take charge of the game and put some real pressure on the pies. We managed to get to 192 before being bowled out early in the final session. Although not being a huge score, we knew that given the conditions this was definitely defendable. We just needed to be disciplined, and take our opportunities when they came our way. And that is exactly what we did. Enter Chris Moore. Very unlikely to be dropped from the First XI, Chris was the head of our attack, and his skill and smarts were all on display at Camberwell. His 6/51 was the main reason we were able to bowl Camberwell out just 15 runs short of our total. By the end of his spell he could barely walk, yet he still wanted the ball in his hand. No doubt we won’t be seeing much of Chris next season, and this is rightly so. So the Semi Final meant an opportunity to meet the Students once again at the University Main Oval. However, the game was not off to the best of starts, with play being delayed until 4:30pm due to water leaking under the covers. This meant we were under extreme pressure to push for a result for a chance to have another crack at the premiership. So I urged the boys to never give up hope, and always believe that we could win. From any position we are in we can make it happen and we all truly believed. So overnight Uni were 2/90ish, having taken a wicket off the last ball of the day. The next morning was quite surreal. By lunchtime Uni were 8 down, and we had bowled them out one hour after the break for 163. An amazing effort considering the quality of opposition and the pressure on us. It was an all-round performance by the bowlers. Now we had 45 overs to chase it down, a very achievable target. Unfortunately our batting frayed, and we looked completely out of the game, that is until Matt Grace and Kam Nayager came together at 8 wickets down. Matt had been dropped for the QF, which was an extremely difficult decision. However he took it on the chin, and was put back into the side to boost our batting line up. And that was exactly what he did. He and Kam put together a 71 run partnership to bring us within 7 runs of victory, when we lost 2 quick wickets to have us 5 runs short. Matt finished with 50, and Kam 23, and got us so close to victory. If it were not for them we would have had an early finish. So although it was a loss, it was a tremendous effort by the boys to even force a result given the circumstances.

So when it all comes down to it, a semifinal finish was I think a very true reflection on our season. A season where we did not quite live up to potential however played some extraordinary cricket along the way with some performances which were once in a lifetime.

So, as we move forward with this talented group, there is undoubtedly far more success to follow for us as a second XI, and more importantly as a club.

Award Winners

Award Trophy Player Best Clubman Doug Rumble Memorial Trophy Jaques Augustin

Doug Rumble was a wicketkeeper who played 187 games for Fitzroy and University. He was born in 1955 and played his first game in 1970 at the age of 15, keeping to the likes of Eddie Illingworth and ‘Froggy’ Thompson, the most feared opening bowling combination in district cricket. He made 1658 runs, took 286 catches and 25 stumping's throughout his career. After two seasons at University, Doug returned to Fitzroy to become captain coach for the club for two years in the early 1980s.

Doug was tragically killed in a skiing accident in 1986, just before the commencement of the first season of the amalgamated Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club. He left behind his wife Glenda and two young children, Jessica and Thomas. Fitzroy Doncaster lost a great clubman. Such was the respect of both Fitzroy and University had for Doug, the clubs now play for the ‘Doug Rumble Cup’ each time they meet. Doug earned this respect not only for the way he went about his cricket, but for the qualities he possessed as a person. On the field, you knew that if the side was in trouble, he would be the one fighting back in the lower order. Off the field, he was a great clubman, who was only too keen to help others. He was respected by both his teammates and opposition alike, and was probably one of the most popular players in the game.

This trophy is not for the best wicketkeeper, it is for the player who has best demonstrated those qualities that Doug possessed as a player, a clubman, a teammate and a friend. It is a very important trophy for the club to honour Doug’s memory, his contribution, and to encourage those qualities in the current generation of players.
