4 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Section A: Reports

President’s Report

As the President of the VCA Umpires and Scorers’ Association Inc. I am pleased to report on the progress of the Association in our 113th year. The Committee of Management is governed by the Rules of the Association which list our purpose as— (1) The protection and furtherance of the interests of umpires and scorers of the Victorian Cricket Association, trading as Cricket Victoria (hereinafter referred to as Cricket Victoria or CV); (2) The provision of support and assistance to CV as required; And (3) The promotion of efficiency and fellowship amongst all CV cricket umpires and scorers. It should be noted that the VCAUSA is a voluntary association and that the Annual Report produced by the VCAUSA is the only document that records scorer and umpire records that is available to all scorers and umpires. The season commenced with the awarding of Life membership to our Secretary and former President and Vice President, Gerry Schembri at the 2018 Annual General Meeting. Gerry is also a Bailhache Commitment award winner and he became our 56th life member. The award recognises his fine work as the Easter convenor, Easter sub-committee member, social event organiser and Secretary as well as his advocacy on behalf of all members’ interests. Gerry has been ably supported by his wife Sylvie who has attended and volunteered her time at many events, particularly Cup Day barbecues and the Crockett Shield and Butler Trophy Easter exchanges. This season we instituted the Cricket Victoria/VCAUSA scholarship for aspiring umpires to introduce them to high performance officiating. This scholarship was the brainchild of VCAUSA member Phil Gillespie following discussions with his National Umpiring Panel colleagues and Cricket Victoria’s Umpiring and Coach Education Manager, Jason Leonard-Scott. The scholarship was awarded to Luke Edwards following the submission of an expression of interest to the Umpiring Manager and the fulfilment of certain criteria which included being a VCAUSA member and a CV panel umpire for at least 2 years. The scholarship of $500 is funded by the VCAUSA and assists the scholar to be mentored by National and State Panel members and be exposed to the demands of high-level officiating. The purpose of the scholarship is to improve umpiring standards and encourage members of the CV panel to join the VCAUSA. Phil Gillespie was this year’s recipient of the Robin Bailhache Commitment award which is the VCAUSA’s most prestigious award. At our recent Annual Dinner and Presentation night we awarded the inaugural Ray Isherwood Perpetual Trophy for the Representative Umpire of the Year. It had become apparent in our discussions with members of the National Umpiring Panel that with the increasing number of representative matches they were unlikely to be available for many CV Premier matches and therefore ineligible for any VCAUSA award. The award recognises the outstanding contribution of our representative umpires and every umpire who was selected for a Cricket tournament or representative match received points which were tallied by the Umpiring Manager. The winner’s name was then

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 5 communicated to the VCAUSA President. The VCAUSA thanks the Isherwood family for their permission to name the award after former Life Member and President, 200 Club member and Test umpire Ray Isherwood. The award will be kept at the CitiPower Centre and an individual trophy was presented to this year’s winner, Shawn Craig. The VCAUSA is very pleased that Michele and Robert Geddes and Michael and Cassandra Isherwood were able to attend the dinner and assist in presenting the award. The perpetual trophy is a set of mounted stumps and was donated by the Bomford family. The perpetual and individual trophies were refurbished and crafted by the Monash Men’s Shed thanks to the efforts of Trevor Finlayson. This season we hosted the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (SACUSA) at Easter 2019 for the 41st R.M. (Bob) Crockett Shield match between the two associations and the 10th Keith Butler Trophy family event. We won the Crockett Shield match thanks to a fine effort and a winning partnership between Stephen Pitts and our Captain, John Richards at a new venue, K.M. Reedy Reserve in Hampton Park. We thank the HSD Cricket Club and their President, Brian Milne, for their hospitality and the cooperation of the City of Casey was much appreciated. Unfortunately, we were “out Finska’d” in the Keith Butler Trophy at the Glen Waverley Bowls Club but the smiles on many faces as we grappled with the nuances of this Scandinavian game demonstrated the importance of the family event in bringing both states together. The Easter weekend was a brilliant success thanks to the organising of Gerry Schembri and the sub-committee of John Richards, John Collins and Trevor Finlayson. One of our National Umpiring Panel members, Phil Gillespie, welcomed our visitors at the Friday night dinner and Eric Kelly was a fine Master of Ceremonies at both evening functions. In 2021 we will travel to Adelaide to defend the Crockett Shield and try to win back the Butler Trophy. This will be the 90th anniversary of the Crockett Shield and promises to be an exciting event with interest already being shown by and the ABC. In June 2020 members of the committee will meet to plan the event with our SACUSA colleagues at Penola. On behalf of the membership of the VCAUSA I thank the Committee of Management for their tireless work during the season. The events conducted included— • the Melbourne Cup Day barbecue at the • dinner at Bon Ap restaurant in Fitzroy • the 1st XI Grand Final Meet on the Hill • the Melbourne University Cricket Club • the Annual Dinner and Presentation Night Business Breakfast at the Veneto Club with our largest ever • the February Training and Development attendance with Cricket Victoria coach Keith sausage sizzle Jansz as guest speaker On behalf of all members I thank— Tony Ventura—Vice President, Bailhache Award winner, coordinated our defence of the Crockett Shield as Chairman of Selectors, fed balls to the bowling machine at CitiPower training, organised our social matches against the Australian Cricket Society and the Mount Waverley Veterans XI and authored “Dad’s Paper” in Law 43. Gerry Schembri—Secretary, Social Event Organiser, Life Member, Bailhache Award winner, former President and Vice President and Easter sub-committee member, MC of the Annual Dinner and Presentation night, ensured that the business of the association was managed effectively, particularly the attraction of new members, presentation of milestone awards, maintenance of membership records, correspondence and the production of the Annual Report. Trevor Finlayson—Treasurer, Life Member, Bailhache Award winner, former President, Crockett Shield umpire, Cup Day bookie and Editor of Law 43; maintained the financial records of the Association ensuring that income and expenditure was managed soundly, that the Easter event was conducted within budget and that a high-quality magazine was published regularly throughout the season.

6 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Luke Edwards—Social Media officer, Crockett Shield winner; for maintaining our Twitter and Facebook profiles and our website. John Richards—Crockett Shield winning Captain, Easter sub-committee member and co-organiser of our matches against the Mt Waverley Veterans. David Meagher—Former umpire and current scorer representative. Rod McKinnon—Bailhache Award winner. Dan Bomford—Life Member, Bailhache Award winner, former Secretary and former Treasurer, holds the record for the number of Crockett Shield appearances and keeper of records and memorabilia. Damian Herft—Bailhache Award winner, Photographer and Social Media officer. Glenn Cumming—Bailhache Award winner, Badges and Accessories Officer and storer of port, hats, socks, shirts and jumpers. Darrell Holt—Bailhache Award winner, Miscellaneous Appointments Officer who connects VCAUSA members to other umpiring opportunities and provides snippets of Playing the Game for Law 43. Bill Ellemor—Bailhache Award winner, Historian, updater of the Crockett Shield history and preparer of Milestone Certificates. The VCAUSA gives special thanks to Teresa Ventura, Sylvie Schembri, Jill Finlayson, Bernadette Bomford, Suzanne Collins, Jill Richards, Caroline Herft and Sue McCarthy for their support and assistance in hosting meetings, taking photographs, attending and working at all our events and functions. Many of our members’ partners contribute behind the scenes and their contribution is invaluable. For the third time all Premier men’s and women’s clubs were invited to nominate a scorer who had contributed to scoring generally, their club, cricket overall and the work of the VCAUSA. The Committee was very pleased to award the Cameron Medal to Shane Herbert of the . On behalf of all members of the VCAUSA I thank Cricket Victoria Umpiring and Coach Education Manager, Jason Leonard-Scott for his support of the Association. Jason met with members of the Executive and provided advice and assistance in the development of the CV/VCAUSA Scholarship and the Ray Isherwood Perpetual Trophy. Jason was supported by Match Officials Administrator Alan Hale and then Nick Powell. Alan and Nick have provided the VCAUSA with details of appointments, milestones and records. The continued support of Cricket Victoria enables the VCAUSA to work on behalf of umpires and scorers. Some of this work includes the umpiring exchanges with South Australia and New Zealand. This season we hosted Dhaval Bhatt from SACUSA and Mathew Hill and Vinit Manha from New Zealand. The exchanges gave Adam Hawking, Matt Robertson and Mark Malmberg the opportunity to further their umpiring knowledge by officiating interstate or overseas. On behalf of the VCAUSA congratulations to all umpires and scorers who officiated in finals, first class and representative matches during the season. Congratulations to all award winners and particularly to Colin Hall who was awarded the Cricket Victoria Umpiring Service Recognition Award at the Ryder Medal dinner. The Committee of Management is indebted to all VCAUSA members and their partners for their support of events throughout the season.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 7 Secretary’s Report

As I reflect on my second season as Association secretary I believe there have been many positive aspects combined with a few challenges that will need to be addressed next season and in the years ahead. This year we achieved the highest number of members during my time with a total of 95 members comprising 66 umpires, 10 scorers, 5 associate and 14 life members. The main reason for the increase from 83 last year was the large number of new panel umpires (16 out of 18) who joined as well as the new Scholarship initiative championed by National Umpire Panel (NUP) member, Phil Gillespie. The introduction of the VCAUSA/CV scholarship in raising the profile of the Association cannot be underestimated and the support of all of the NUP members together with CV umpire and coach education manager, Jason Leonard-Scott in bringing this idea to fruition, needs to be acknowledged. The other major new initiative from your Association this season was the introduction of the inaugural Ray Isherwood Representative Umpire award. Many members have long believed that a gap existed in our annual awards whereby the best state umpire and the best first grade umpire awards needed to be separately distinguished. The representative umpire award achieves this goal and we are again indebted to the NUP members and Jason Leonard-Scott for their assistance in making it happen. The very successful end of year presentation dinner was again well attended and was a real season highlight with a total of seven end of season awards being presented including the Ray Isherwood award. This year we hosted the Easter Event involving SACUSA and the 41st match of the Crockett Shield and for those who attended the event, it was another memorable Easter weekend. This event has certainly stepped up over the years in terms of quality but this does come at a financial cost. As our Treasurer’s report will no doubt detail, the host state incurs numerous extra costs in running this event that ultimately are borne by the membership. In my opinion this will not be sustainable over the longer term under the current Easter program and desire for a high standard of event at a continued subsidised cost to members and their families attending. The continued payment of member subsidies for Easter and other social events throughout the season will eventually see us run out of money. A modest grant from CV every four years to help cover the Easter shortfall would be one solution and dialogue on this matter should be pursued next season. Other challenges that we face are attracting new people on to the Committee of Management and continuing to find ways for our association to be relevant to all CV umpires and scorers. Despite the hard work of the past few years we still only attract approximately two thirds of Victorian panel umpires as financial members of our Association. During the past year, your Committee of Management have met as a group on four occasions and I would like to extend my personal thanks to all those committee members who have contributed to the running of the Association over the past year. Our president, Alan McCarthy has continued to lead from the front and in his fourth year as VCAUSA president has done a fine job. Trevor Finlayson has worked tirelessly both as editor of Law 43 and in the important role of Association Treasurer. Tony Ventura as Vice President, has capably filled the void in Alan’s absence and together with John Richards has again been vital in overseeing all our social cricket matches. A difficulty during the past year has been trying to find someone to take on the Social Organiser role that was ultimately left to members of the executive to sort out. The administration of the VCAUSA continues to ensure that our procedures are correct and that, as far as I am aware, all of the mandatory requirements applying to Incorporated Associations have been met. Minutes of meetings have been kept; correspondences have been recorded and responded to; formal accounts have been maintained; and

8 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 reporting obligations to Consumer Affairs Victoria have been properly complied with. Your association is financially solvent albeit with a substantial drop in our bank balance over the past 12 months and continues to rely on voluntary membership fees for survival. Under our charter, the VCAUSA aims to represent the interests of all CV umpires and scorers. Most members are aware of the various social events and activities that are widely promoted over the year and a core group of members regularly attend. I am a strong advocate of the milestone recognition certificates issued by our association each year that go to both financial and non-financial members alike. Over the past few years we have purchased stocks of VCAUSA embroidered ties, polo shirts and jackets and it is great to see members proudly wearing these items at functions. At the start of this season, the Association prepared a detailed submission to CV pointing out that Premier Cricket umpire fees had fallen behind other Melbourne cricket competitions and we asked for a $20 per day increase. In the end we received a $5 per day increase. Our President has twice yearly meetings with Jason Leonard-Scott and this is our opportunity to raise issues that are of concern to us all. In this regard, I would like to thank Jason for continuing to work closely with our Association during the past year. Without a close working relationship with CV, our effectiveness as a member organisation would be diminished. It is vital that our association is able to build strong relationships with key CV people so that the interests of umpires and scorers can be properly represented. To close, I would like to thank all those members who have contributed to the VCAUSA during the past year and for your continued support. Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge the work of our historian Bill Ellemor for his efforts in compiling and publishing another Annual Report on our behalf.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 9 Treasurer’s Report

It is my pleasure to present the financial report and associated statements for the year ended 30th April 2019, on behalf of the Committee of Management. As of this date, the Association’s cash funds totalled $19,549.01 which, when coupled with the value of Stock on Hand ($2,956.30) and the depreciated value of Items of Equipment ($809.78), resulted in the Net Assets figure of $23,315.09. However, with the significant overlap between the financial years 2018–19 and 2019–20 involving both the Biennial VCAUSA/SACUSA Easter Event and the 2019 VCAUSA Annual Dinner and Presentation Night, these ongoing Liabilities of $10,218.60 must be factored into this figure and, for this reason, these Outstanding Liabilities have been summarised for the attention of members, in Appendix I of the Financial Statements. The details of our cash funds (at 30th April 2019) as set out in the subsequent financial summary, are a Bendigo Bank Account of $12,447.75 and an Investment Deposit with the Uniting Church Ethical Enhancement Cash Trust of $7,221.26. The Association should note that the previously held CBA Cash Account was closed during this past season. The Uniting Church account remains the most effective investment method for our Association in that the money remains readily available as required but at the same time accrues interest at better than bank interest. For most of the current financial reporting period, the interest rate offered by the Uniting Church was 2.25%, still better than one could achieve with any bank cash account and even better than could be achieved with most bank term deposits. As has been done in recent years, any possible excess funds in our normal operating account for significant periods of time have been transferred to this investment account. Overall, for the financial year we recorded a net surplus of $6,173.04 (compared with a net deficit of $1,750.50 for the previous financial year) although the Liabilities mentioned above and summarised in Appendix I should be noted. I must highlight, particularly, the remaining liabilities to the 2019 Easter event which was hosted by the VCAUSA, and which I have seen fit to draw to the attention of the Association via the detailed Easter 2019 Financial Statement, (Appendix II to the Financial Statements which follow this report). The deficit to our Association for Easter 2019 has been $7,000.92. Part of this deficit would have occurred as a result of the subsidies of $20.00 per person and $25.00 per person offered to VCAUSA members and their partners for the Friday night and Saturday night functions, totalling $880.00 and $1,375.00, respectively. But quite clearly, such a deficit is not sustainable in the long term, so that in the future the Association must give serious consideration to either seeking sponsorship for this event or making changes to the format for the event in order to reduce the overall cost. Memberships have been maintained at a reasonable level with the figure of 95 members (5 Associate, 10 Scorer, 66 Umpire and 14 Non-paying Life). Membership subscriptions for the year totalled $8,820.00 compared to $7,440.00 in 2017–18, with the membership fee remaining at $120 for an Umpire and $60 for Scorer and Associate Members, as the result of a motion at the 2018 Annual General Meeting. Financial returns to members (in some cases to all CV panel umpires and in some cases to their partners and/or families as well) during this financial year were: the Cup-Day BBQ to welcome new members, held at the Carlton Cricket Club in November, 2018 ($693.50); a Restaurant Night at the Bon Ap Restaurant, Fitzroy, in January, 2019 ($455.00); the annual Melbourne University Business Breakfast in February 2019 ($180.00); two social cricket matches (vs the Australian Cricket Society in November 2018 and vs Mount Waverley Veterans in March 2019) ($649.10); the now annual sausage sizzle in conjunction with the February CV Training and Development Meeting ($92.60); and

10 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 the CV Grand Final drinks and nibbles, at CityPower, St Kilda Junction ($61.22) or in total $2,131.42. This specifically excludes the subsidies towards the 2019 Easter Event, discussed above and the 2019 Annual Dinner and Presentation Night which having been held on 17th May 2019, is outside the time frame of this report. Mention should also be made of the introduction of the VCAUSA/CV Scholarship awarded for the first time for season 2018/19, which was to the value of $500.00 The Annual Consumer Affairs Victoria registration fee for incorporation, amounted to $57.80. In accord with our Rules of Incorporation, there is no need for the Association accounts to be audited, but I can report that your Committee of Management has accepted the regular Treasurer’s Reports tabled at each of its meetings throughout this past financial year. In addition, the Financial Statements outlined on the following pages have been critically perused in conjunction with each of the reports presented to the Committee of Management, by Glenn Cumming who is a suitably qualified member to do so. The following pages contain the annual Financial Statements for the VCA Umpires’ and Scorers’ Association Incorporated, for the year ended 30th April 2019, comprising a Statement of Income and Expenditure and Balance Sheet presenting the Associations assets at this same date. In addition, as mentioned above, in the Appendices to the Financial Statements, I have included a summary of the forthcoming Liabilities and the Income and Expenditure for the 2019 Easter event, hosted in Melbourne by the VCAUSA.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 15 Badges and Accessories

A total of 47 items (including 25 bottles of port) were sold during the season with $811.00 banked. Additional stocks of the VCAUSA off-field jackets and the VCAUSA caps were purchased during the season. Thank you to John Collins and Trevor Finlayson for arranging the procurement of these items. Other items (mainly caps and bottles of port) were used as presentations to umpires who achieved major milestones throughout the season and as prizes at the 2019 Easter event. Caps were presented to new VCAUSA members. The VCAUSA continues to hold large stocks of apparel and bottles of port, although these stocks are slowly being reduced. The stock of port has decreased to 54 bottles remaining in stock. Efforts will again be made during the coming season to dispose of as much of the old stock as possible. My thanks to the VCAUSA Committee, especially Trevor Finlayson and Gerry Schembri, for their advice and guidance.

16 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Social Report

Melbourne Cup Day Barbecue, November 2018 The Melbourne Cup Day Barbecue at the Carlton Cricket Club was our first social function of the season. Torrential morning rain drenched many well-dressed patrons at Flemington and unfortunately prevented the attendance at the barbecue for a few who had previously signed up and had been catered for. The function was enjoyed by forty two Association members, partners, associates and families who had arrived at a time when it was impossible to see the spire of Ormond College, such was the downpour. Thanks to Bernadette Bomford, Suzanne Collins, Jill Finlayson, Heather Holt, Sandra Kelly, Sue McCarthy, Jill Richards and Teresa Ventura who provided the excellent dishes to complement the barbecued chicken and sausages prepared in trying conditions by Master Chef, John Collins. Those who braved the weather enjoyed themselves. Indeed, it was pleasing to be able to welcome not only the regulars but also some new panel members (including Usman Mani; Kim Faulkner with partner Chris and his father Tim Dey; Andre Conradie with partner Debra) and two seasoned life members and their respective partners, to socialize with both young and old members present, to share refreshments and watch the horses run. Thanks to photographer Will Downey whose efforts were presented in Law 43; resident Sweep Master Trevor Finlayson; and apprentices Benjamin Denmead and Lachlan Willis.

Restaurant Night, January 2019 As reported in the February 2019 edition of Law 43, a restaurant night at Bon Ap, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy coincided with the annual New Zealand Exchange visit. It was timely that the two events happened in the same week as it provided an opportunity for the New Zealand visitors (Matthew Hill and Vinit Manha) to meet more VCAUSA members than just those with whom they officiated during the week. Twenty seven Association members and their partners spent a most enjoyable evening, sampling the French cuisine, with a set menu chosen by Social Organiser Gerry Schembri. Jason Leonard-Scott, our Umpire and Coach Education Manager and his wife Kirsty attended this function. It was pleasing to see not only several of the regular supporters of Association functions present, but also to be able to welcome some new members (including Usman Mani, Tim Norton and Andrew Chatten) who, we trust, enjoyed themselves and will continue to support VCAUSA social events. Overall, a low number attended considering the size of our membership which could have been disappointing for the event organisers, but the atmosphere, friendship and fare compensated for quantity.

University Breakfast, February 2019 Nine Association members attended the breakfast event on Friday 15th February, the occasion for the Melbourne University Cricket Club Annual Business Breakfast. It has been conducted in recent years on the 17th Floor of the RACV Club Melbourne. Although former MUCC Captain/Coach, James Sutherland was not available, the guest for the morning was former Australian Test player and now cricket commentator, Ed Cowan. Some of Ron Steiner’s questions to Ed were equally searching as the many that he has put to James Sutherland at previous MUCC Business Breakfasts. Such issues as Michael Clarke’s leadership and qualities as Test Captain; the characters and personalities

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 17 of Greg Matthews and Kevin Peterson; and the aftermath of the 2018 sandpaper saga. Ron’s questions were handled with professionalism. It was interesting to observe that Ed Cowan was in his 22nd season as a member of the Sydney University CC and his thoughts on the character building potential for students as the result of becoming part of not only their University Cricket Club but also university sporting teams in general, struck a familiar chord for many at the Breakfast. Members attending included Daryl Brigham, Chris Grant, Trevor Finlayson, Paul Jensen, Eric Kelly, Mick Nolan, Rob Sturgeon, Mattis van Eck and Jamie Wyatt.

Sausage Sizzle, Training and Development Meeting February 2019 All panel Association members who were available attended and shared in the Sausage Sizzle prior to the February Training and Development Meeting. Thanks to Gerry Schembri and Lou Tenace for catering and cooking for ninety hungry colleagues, and to St Kilda CC for providing logistics.

Premier Final Tent, April 2019 Thanks to Alan McCarthy and his wife Sue for catering with soft drink and nibbles for more hungry colleagues on day 2 of the Premier Final on Saturday 6th April 2019. And to Jason Leonard-Scott for arranging logistics. The day was cool although sunny and fine—those able to attend and celebrate the final Premier match of the season were treated to some wonderful cricket between Carlton and Geelong CCs.

Other Social cricket matches (November 2018, March 2019), Easter (April 2019) and Presentation Night (May 2019) are reported elsewhere in this Annual Report. By chance, six members attended the Crusaders Celebratory Dinner in October 2018.

Subsidies The Melbourne Cup Day Barbecue, Sausage Sizzle and Premier Final Tent are free events for all attendees. Association subsidies are typically allocated to major functions—Restaurant Nights, Easter and the Annual Dinner and Presentation Night are all subsidised events. Other functions such as the University Breakfast are charged at cost.

Acknowledgment On behalf of all Association members, thank you to: • VCAUSA Social Organiser Gerry Schembri, supported by his wife Sylvie, for arranging the calendar of social functions for Association members, partners, associates and families for season 2018–19; • other organisers, assistants and helpers including partners, photographers and cleaners who participated to support the Association in conducting its social functions.

18 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Miscellaneous Appointments

The Association receives requests seeking umpires for a range of cricket matches. The bulk of appointments for 2018–19 were provided to the MCC Club XI Competition, and to two schools competitions—the Associated Catholic Colleges, and the Association of Co-Educational Schools. Catholic Colleges sought our umpires for major Grand Finals matches. The Crusaders have regular need for umpires for both mid-week and Sunday fixtures. Also two major appointments were required—Will Downey officiated in the three day match Crusaders vs Victorian Sub-District CA at Donvale CC, and Will Downiey and Eric Kelly umpired a scheduled four day match vs a Cricket Victoria XI at the Albert Ground. MCC Club XI Competition again required 11 umpires each weekend of the season. MCC Club XI offered umpires top remuneration, and outstanding playing conditions, which assists filling Sunday matches. A mix of Cricket Victoria panel members and numerous umpires referred from Metropolitan Cricket Associations enabled all requests to be filled. Thank you to all umpires who accepted appointments and provided professional officiating. Apart from match appointments, the Miscellaneous Appointments role again provided to organisations advice on drafting revisions of Match Playing Regulations.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 19 Law 43

It is my pleasure to present this report to the Association. Volume 25 of Law 43 for the 2018–19 season comprised seven issues, one each month from September 2018 to February 2019 plus a “bonus” Easter 2019 issue to coincide with the Biennial Easter exchange with SACUSA, which was hosted by the VCAUSA this year. The first six of these issues were published as an email attachment one day or so prior to the respective Cricket Victoria (CV) Training and Development (T&D) night, sent out by the CV Administration Manager, (initially Alan Hale and later Nicholas Powell), to the whole umpiring panel email list, and likewise by our Association Secretary, Gerry Schembri, to his additional membership list. A similar procedure was followed for the Easter 2019 issue, just a few days prior to the Easter weekend. Gerry has also been responsible for uploading each issue to our Association website, http://vcausa.vic.cricket.com.au, where all copies of Law 43 dating back to Volume 21 from season 2014–15 are now available electronically, via the menu item Law 43. Only a required minimum of 10 hard copies have been printed by CV and posted to those members who do not have email or who specifically requested a hard copy. For the Easter issue, our Umpiring and Coach Education manager, Jason Leonard-Scott offered to produce 40 hard copies so that these could be made available especially to our South Australian visitors during the Easter exchange. Sincere thanks to Alan, Nicholas and Jason for generously maintaining this service in relation to the distribution of the newsletter. The additional outlet for each issue of Law 43 to the (MCC) Library, commenced in season 2017–18, has continued throughout this past season. Also, on account of the interest in the biennial Crockett Shield on the part of the Tinetti family at Cricket Willow, copies of the Easter 2019, January/February 2017 and Easter 2017 issues were sent to Trish Tinetti, in response to her interest in articles in these issues. I understand these items are to be added to the display of Crockett memorabilia at Cricket Willow. The introduction to new panel members via the publication of a short “bio” from each of them, again served a useful purpose and thanks to all new panel member for their contributions. I must acknowledge the various authors of both the regular columns and the occasional articles which I received throughout the season. Again the regular column From the President was shared between President, Alan McCarthy, and Vice-President, Tony Ventura, on an alternate basis. My thanks to Jason Leonard-Scott for his regular column, From the Desk of the Umpire & Coach Education Manager. I must acknowledge a number of members for their contributed articles, without which our newsletter would not be the interesting read that it has been throughout this season. These contributors are Eric Kelly (Sixes Cricket in Thailand), Richard Patterson (Cricket Australia Umpire Education Manager. What is my Job?), Darrell Holt (Dan Bomford—The Third Sexcentenarian for the CV Panel), Graeme Lloyd (400 and Still Counting—Graeme Lloyd Joins the Quarternarians), Alan McCarthy (The Hound of Prahran—with apologies to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Paul Wellbourn), Geoff Joshua (A ‘Wrap-Up’ of the JLT Cup), Mattis van Eck (CA U17 Championship 2018—Queensland), Phil Gillespie (The Women’s T20 International: Australia vs New Zealand—2018), Adam Hawking (The 2018/19 Vic/SA Umpire Exchange), Chris Grant (Deaf ICC T20 World Cup—17th November to 1st December, 2018), courtesy of The Telegraph (Honouring Basil D’Olivera: a life measured in far more than runs), Matthew Hill and Vinit Mahna (The 2018/19 NZ/Vic Umpire Exchange), Dhaval Bhatt (SA/Vic Umpire Exchange—Melbourne 2018–19) and Chris Grant and Tony Medina (The 2019 National Premier T20 Championships).

20 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 It was also pleasing to be able to publish some most interesting Holiday Tales from Eric and Sandra Kelly, John Ward and my own with Jill on our trip to The Galapagos and South America. I trust we can publish further such tales in the 2019–20 volume. Another item of note this past season was the award of the inaugural VCAUSA/CV Scholarship and many thanks to Damian Herft for reporting on the award itself and to the recipient, Luke Edwards, for his two reports on his progress during the season. Of course, being a year of the Crockett Shield, hosted by the VCAUSA, I did my best to stir up enthusiasm for this now-traditional biennial event, with a regular column entitled “The 2019 Crockett Shield Mission Continues”. It was of interest to note that as a result of the special Easter Issue, there has been a suggestion that such an issue, published in collaboration between the VCAUSA and SACUSA, should become a feature of future Biennial Easter exchanges. It was pleasing that it has been possible to continue the regular column, Macca’s Book Review and the invitation continues for any book reader to contribute to this column in the future. Also, Tim Wendelken’s suggestion for the new column entitled My Favourite Test Team (February 2019) certainly produced some responses which it will be of interest to summarise in the first issue for next season. Finally, I am grateful to Darrell Holt for continually forwarding to me the cricket newsletter, Playing the Game, from which interesting items can be reproduced.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 21 Social Media

Facebook https://www.facebook.com/vicumpires/ Season 2018–19 has seen steady growth in use of our Facebook page, with a deliberate focus to engage our audience via meaningful content. There have been posts about key appointments, photos of our social events and games, achievements of our members and general stories of interest, but there are still opportunities to improve further. The Facebook page is our only Social Media information source, and we’ll keep up the focus next season as we use this as one of the methods to distribute information to our followers. The number of people who ‘like’ our Facebook page has grown to 450—which is a significant uplift from 303 in Sept 2017 and then 381 in May 2018. Our audience comprises of 88% male and 12% female—with followers in Australia, India, Pakistan, UK, Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, UAE and Sri Lanka. The post that attracted our biggest audience was the story at the start of the year wishing all umpires good luck on the start of the season, and especially to Dan Bomford prior to his 600th match. This post reached 1,150 people and generated 33 likes/comments. Our age demographic split is unsurprising for Social Media with the largest groups in the 18–34 range, followed by evenly spread groups from 35 to 54yo. We obviously have umpires and families on this page, but we also have a few players, ex-players, ex-umpires from here and interstate, as well as general followers of cricket. Providing information in a timely manner has always proved a challenge, but this year there was a focus to inform about representative appointments, milestones such as the above-mentioned post about Dan’s 600th as well as Darrell Holt’s 650th match and most of our representative (Cricket Australia) appointment. Easter 2019 proved popular on the Facebook page with hundreds of photos and lots of engagement, and this was followed up with another popular post about our Presentation Night, that reached 400 people and generated 188 engagements. As usual, the spread of information about our Facebook page will only enhance if you help promote our page. You can do this by inviting your Facebook friends to ‘like’ our page, and occasionally add comments/likes to it. Promotion brings awareness, and awareness brings better content, so if there’s any specific information that you’d like to see on the Facebook page, please let Damian Herft or Luke Edwards know. If we can do this, awareness of our page will increase, knowledge of cricket (and umpiring in particular) will increase, and cricket will be the winner.

24 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Cricket Victoria Season Review: Umpire & Coach Education Manager

Just like that, season 2018–19 is in the books! It’s fair to say that my first full season in the Manager’s role has seen some challenges, successes and learning opportunities. I’m particularly proud of the progress the panel have made this season. Overall, the captains have rated the group higher in all areas.

number ABCDEFGHIJK ave of reports ALL 2017/18 3067 2.33 2.34 2.33 2.35 2.29 2.27 2.30 2.31 2.30 192 2.12 2.31 Grades 2018/19 2666 2.40 2.43 2.41 2.46 2.35 2.28 2.34 2.37 2.37 203 2.09 2.38 change 0.07 0.09 0.08 0.11 0.06 0.01 0.04 0.06 0.07 0.07

This is testament to the effort and energy everyone has contributed to preparation, communication and the team-first attitude. On an individual grade basis, the Third XI (+0.01) & Fourth XI (+0.01) panels remained essentially steady whilst the First XI (+0.22) showed outstanding growth to average 2.50 as a group! The disappointing result was the Second XI which decreased by 0.10. These changes may be attributed to many and varied reasons, which we will unpack as a panel in the lead-up to next season. Thanks go to the mentors, off field observers and umpires for their support of the MOS system which will be expanded in the future. Congratulations go to all our Grand Final umpires across the season in all formats:

Selecting the umpire of the year in each grade, as well as the inaugural Isherwood trophy for Best Representative Umpire was a very pleasant problem to have … more on this later. At the recent Ryder/Paisley night, I was very pleased to award Colin Hall with the Umpire Recognition Award. It was fair to say Colin was surprised and very humbled to achieve this award. Well deserved, Colin. The Crockett Shield defence at Easter was a huge achievement. The weather looked after us and we got a great game in. Outstanding performances by all involved, especially captain courageous John Richards and Stephen Pitts for their outstanding 7th partnership to get us over the line in a very tense chase. Exchanges were held with New Zealand and South Australia. Many thanks to Matt Robertson, Mark Malmberg and Adam Hawking for representing Victorian Premier Cricket with such distinction. We welcomed Michael Hill, Dhaval Bhatt and Vinit Manha to Melbourne as well. End of Season Interviews, somewhat worryingly (but unnecessarily so) called “exit interviews” were completed. Whilst voluntary, I appreciated the opportunity to speak with 62 umpires, discussing their progress and helping set realistic goals for the coming seasons. Our mentors played a significant role in season 2018–19. These we referred to at each T&D. It was interesting to note that the report/caution data was almost identical this season. The significant change being the recognition of behaviour as ‘reportable’ rather than just a ‘caution’.

Reports Cautions Total 2017/18 5 84 89 2018/19 22 62 84

I’d like to think that this is because we’ve remembered that “The behaviour we ignore is the behaviour we approve”. Very few captains commented on poor explanations and there were more comments from them about clear and courageous decision making under pressure. Well done all.

28 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Vale—Bill Guelen and Jason Whalley

The VCAUSA was saddened to learn of the recent passing of two of its past members. Bill Guelen was the first grade scorer for . Bill passed away on 28th May 2019, aged 65. He commenced scoring in Victorian Premier Cricket in season 2010–11 and scored a total of 149 matches including 46 in first grade. In an email to the VCAUSA, DCC Secretary Liz Williamson wrote: Dandenong has indeed lost a great clubman in Bill. Bill will be sorely missed at the club. Although he was a quiet man he was always around willing to lend a helping hand and the boys did miss him this year in the scorebox. Jason Whalley passed away on 3rd July 2019 after a sudden illness. Jason joined the Cricket Victoria umpire’s panel in season 2010–11 and umpired a total of 129 Premier matches across all grades. In 2018 Jason moved to Wangaratta where he was involved in the local cricket community, and also stood as the 2019 Federal candidate for Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party in the electorate of Indi. The VCAUSA extends its sincere condolences to both families.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 29 Gerry Schembri—Life Member

At the 2018 Annual General Meeting, Gerry Schembri was presented with Life Membership of our Association. Gerry has been a member for 12 years, first being appointed to the Cricket Victoria panel of umpires, and joining the Association, in 2006–07.

Executive Positions Gerry has contributed to the smooth operation of Association administration whilst a member of the Committee of Management. He has been on the Committee for nine consecutive years since first joining it in 2009–10. He has contributed to management, freely giving his time in the following capacities: • Treasurer 2009–10 to 2012–13 • Vice President 2015–16 and 2016–17 (four consecutive terms) (two consecutive terms) • President 2013–14 and 2014–15 • Secretary 2017–18 (two consecutive terms)

Biennial Easter Event Gerry has been on the Committee during a time that the Association Easter management team has been developed, and he has been the Association Convenor for the biennial Easter event in conjunction with the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (SACUSA) for several events—a time and effort consuming role. Gerry has been instrumental in strengthening the ties between the two Associations, working closely with his good friend Lynton Donisthorpe of SACUSA, even to the point of developing an inter-Association meeting during the off years. Members from both Associations have noted an increase in participation in recent times including a greater level of inclusiveness at functions including pre and post event communication. The members note that this is attributable to Gerry’s involvement. Communication with his fellow Association members, treating them respectfully and inclusively, is one of Gerry’s strengths.

Loyalty and Commitment Gerry has always been a loyal supporter of the VCAUSA, entering discussion (and leading discussion when he was President) at meetings. He has shown a high level of dedication to the Association and its policies, and has publicly demonstrated his commitment to Association events and the Committee of Management. Gerry was awarded the prestigious Robin Bailhache Commitment award for his commitment over several years, but specifically for the 2016–17 year in which he was a member of the Association Easter management team and the Association Easter Convenor. The 2016–17 biennial Easter event was conducted in Adelaide, and was a particularly successful social event. The VCAUSA participated with many Association members, partners and families attending. The award of Life Membership acknowledges Gerry’s involvement, contribution, valuable service and loyalty to our Association and is a thoroughly well-deserved honour..

36 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 Easter In Melbourne 2019—Convenor’s Report

Easter exchange visits between our Association and the South Australian Umpires and Scorers’ Association (SACUSA) date back to 1931 with exchange visits held every second year. This year the programme of events incorporated the 41st match between the two umpiring and scoring associations with members of the VCAUSA hosting the visitors in Melbourne. The official program of activities over the Easter weekend included: Good Friday 19th April: Welcome Dinner • Ballroom, Novotel Glen Waverley. • Buffet dinner and drinks commenced at 6:30pm. • Introduction to the Victorian and SA cricket teams. Easter Saturday 20th April: VCAUSA v SACUSA Cricket Match • At KM Reedy Reserve, Hampton Park. • Match commenced at main oval (turf pitch) at 10:30am, 40 overs each side. • Light lunch including soft drinks was served from 12:45pm. Saturday Evening 20th April: Presentation Dinner Dance • Ballroom, Novotel Glen Waverley. • Three course plated dinner and drinks, commenced 7.00pm. • Presentation of awards, trophies and R.M. Crockett Shield throughout. Easter Sunday 21st April: Family Day and KC Butler Trophy Competition • FINSKA teams competition outdoors at Glen Waverley Bowls Club from 11:00am. • Spit roast carvery lunch was served at 1:00pm. • Drinks (soft and alcohol) were provided throughout the day. • Joint Committee meeting at Eureka Room, Novotel hotel at 4:00pm. Easter Monday 22nd April: Farewell Breakfast • Breakfast served from 7:30am at Oakleigh Room, Novotel hotel. • Final speeches & farewell. This Easter, the host state faced the difficult challenge of trying to find a suitable cricket ground very late in the year and then hoping that Melbourne’s unpredictable weather would not spoil the party. Thankfully our Committee of Management was able to secure an excellent ground and facility in Hampton Park that is used solely for cricket and a turf pitch was able to be prepared. The match was played in glorious autumn weather with temperatures reaching 30 degrees. The two evening functions received good support with 70 and 85 people attending on the respective two nights and the master of ceremonies on both nights was our own Eric Kelly who did a fantastic job. Congratulations to team captain John Richards and all the playing members of the VCAUSA team who successfully retained the prized R.M. (Bob) Crockett Shield on Easter Saturday and to Trevor Finlayson (umpire) and Alan Britton (scorer) for their respective efforts. On Sunday, it was the South Australians who won the most number of FINSKA games

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 37 to win the 10th competition for the Keith C. Butler memorial trophy. This was a Scandinavian outdoor game that catered for all ages with lots of fun and laughter to be heard during the afternoon. On the Saturday night, current Victorian holder of the Skull award, Rod McKinnon was very pleased to hand the bat over to Shane Roberts of SA. I would like to acknowledge the attendance and participation of the following VCAUSA members including associate and life members at Easter: Luke Edwards, Trevor Finlayson, Alan McCarthy, John Collins, Gerry Schembri, Dan Bomford, Rod McKinnon, Tony Ventura, Darrell Holt Eric Kelly, Ashley Barrow Peter Hooper, Cyril Andrews Chris Allan, Glenn Cumming John Richards, Greg Azzopardi Damian Herft, Glenn Schache Jamie Wyatt, Stephen Pitts Mattis van Eck, Paul Welbourn Glenn Davey, Courtney Lai Paul Jensen, Robin Bailhache, Alan Britton—First Easter, Luke Utenwoldt— First Easter for VCAUSA, Phil Gillespie—First Easter, Dale Ireland—First Easter, Jason Leonard-Scott—First Easter, Rob Sturgeon—First Easter, Chris Doyle—First Easter, Kim Faulkner—First Easter It was also pleasing to have support for this traditional Easter event from spouses and partners of attending members as well as some children and other family members. I would like to acknowledge Bernadette and David Bomford, Jill Richards, Sylvie Schembri, Sue McCarthy and Liz and Tony Trist for their volunteer work on Saturday afternoon. A special note of thanks to my fellow members of the Easter sub-committee, Trevor Finlayson, John Collins and John Richards for their vision and hard work over two years. It was mainly through the efforts of Alan McCarthy and his local club connections that the excellent playing ground and facility at Hampton Park was able to be secured. Our committee was able to work co-operatively with Lynton Donisthorpe from SACUSA in the lead up to the event to ensure that Easter plans were communicated effectively throughout. Thanks also to Damian Herft for acting as our official photographer and to our selectors Alan McCarthy, John Richards and Tony Ventura for arranging cricket net training sessions and pre match responsibilities. The embroidered playing shirts were again organised by John and Suzanne Collins. Retaining the Crockett Shield in a close and entertaining match was the highlight of the weekend but the real winner was cricket fellowship between umpires, scorers and family members of both State Associations. Easter 2021 will be held in Adelaide and will mark the 90th year of this traditional and unique event between our two associations.

Gerry Schembri, VCAUSA Easter 2019 Convenor

Easter 2019—The Crockett Shield Match Report

Following the Good Friday Night Welcome Dinner, the Easter match was played at KM Reedy Reserve Hampton Park. A perfect day was presented by the weather gods with the ground and facilities were in superb condition. Thanks and hats off to the VCAUSA president Alan Mc Carthy for organising the venue. Trevor Finlayson (VCAUSA) and Bruce Stribley (SACUSA) umpired with Alan Britton (VCAUSA) and Neil Ricketts (SACUSA) scorers. At the dinner both captains introduced the two sides to compete for the 2019 (41st) edition of the Crocket Shield. Now rumour has it that after the announcement of the VCAUSA side without the names Brne and Brigham (previous stars for VCAUSA) some of the SACUSA players confidence rose to the point that they thought: No Brne or Brigham playing, No VCAUSA.

38 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 One SACUSA player who shall remain nameless (Michael Williamson) was gloating that they were a “sure thing” to win the game this year, as those two players were the only players that performed in the previous two encounters and without them VCAUSA didn’t have much talent left. This confidence carried through to the start of the game. At the toss a new concept was introduced at the suggestion of the SACUSA president, Ed Branson. This was that an official “tosser” should toss the coin, someone who had allegiance to both states. So the perfect person to fit the bill was Paul Welbourn and he was elected the tosser. Dhaval Bhatt (SACUSA captain) called correctly and had no hesitation to bat first. SACUSA confidence was now sky high as normally who wins the toss wins the game. But hang on, this pitch didn’t look a typical late April pitch that has been served up in the past and looked like it would play truly all day. That’s the feeling we Victorians had before the start of play. The VCAUSA took the field with four debutants: Dale Ireland, Jason Leonard-Scott, Rob Sturgeon (umpire members) and Chris Doyle (scorer member). The VCAUSA were off to a terrific start due to the opening bowlers Mattis van Eck and Luke Edwards. Mick Sheppard was out to a magnificent catch taken by Dale Ireland (2nd slip) off the bowling of Mattis van Eck. M. Singh and A. Drosd came and went in fairly quick succession, SACUSA were 3/13 off 13 overs. Two to van Eck and one wicket to Chris Doyle who had just replaced Mattis van Eck after his fine spell. In came Craig Thomas, first ball he faced off Doyle was an inside edge onto his shoe which rebounded and hit the off stump, VCAUSA players got excited however the bail wasn’t dislodged and therefore . Was this to be Craig’s lucky day? David Little was dismissed by Chris Doyle, SACUSA were 4/28 and in a bit of bother. At drinks SACUSA were hanging on at 4/46. C. Thomas and A. Narwal put on an excellent 72 run partnership when Narwal was bowled by Glenn Davey with the score at 5/100 in the 29th over. This partnership breaks the record for SACUSA 5th wicket all time, which was held by A.Crafter and W.Penley (69 runs—1977). Then another healthy partnership between C. Thomas and M. Williamson saw the score to 6/149 in the 39th over when Craig finally was out off the bowling of Chris Doyle. Craig’s innings of 90 the fourth highest ever score for both sides included 6 fours and 6 sixes, which even he would admit had a bit of luck. I can remember at least six chances (3 dropped catches that should have been taken ended in 3 sixes and a run out chance that all the Victorians thought was out as Craig’s bat was still in the air after a spectacular bit of fielding by Courtney Lai off his own bowling). M. Williamson and T. Ambepitiya finished off the innings, SACUSA 6/156 off 40 overs. The VCAUSA bowled well to keep the SACUSA to a manageable score with thanks to the medium pace attack of Chris Doyle, Mattis van Eck and Glenn Davey who shared the wickets. A special mention goes to Luke Edwards who did perk up and came back on after he had to leave the field due to illness and bowled a second spell of 2 overs at the end and bowled quite economically. I must say that the fielding did let us down a bit, something to work on for next time. Rumour has it that the Victorians will have some fielding practice included at future T&D meetings which are held at the Junction oval in an attempt to improve our fielding. The SACUSA boys were still upbeat about their performance as they thought it was a winning score (going on their 2 previous performances). The Victorians were still quietly confident that a winning score was still achievable. A great lunch was served up, with thanks to the organising party. Courtney Lai and Dale Ireland opened the inning for the VCAUSA. With some tight bowling by the SACUSA opening bowlers and stubborn resistance by the openers the VCAUSA were 1/28 in the 9th over when Ireland was out. Greg Azzopardi came and went for a duck, VCAUSA 2/28. Jamie Wyatt was next in, promoted in the batting order due to some excellent lead in form. He ran himself out, VCAUSA 3/39 off 13 overs. In came Jason Leonard-Scott and he looked the part until he was given out LBW, VCAUSA 4/47. At the drinks break (20 overs) VCAUSA were 4/55 with Courtney Lai—batting solidly, and Glenn Davey at the crease. Not long after the break Courtney and Glenn were both out, VCAUSA 6/69 in the 23rd over. At that point, there were 106 balls remaining in the innings with 88 runs required for the VCAUSA to win. The SACUSA boys smelling victory all day long and now just waiting for the fat lady to sing, thought it was a foregone conclusion that they had won. I must say some Victorian supporters left

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 39 not long after as they also thought the VCAUSA was no chance. Well in came John Richards (VCAUSA captain) batting at 7 and Stephen Pitts batting at 8. They obviously didn’t give up hope. As the total slowly but surely ticked over, 6/81, 6/92, 6/103 the score was looking at least a bit more respectable. The score kept mounting up 6/120 with the remaining batsman (M. van Eck, G. Schache & R. Sturgeon) all padded up sitting in the same seat and without moving a millimetre for the entire time. The score was 6/131 at the end of 35th over. This meant VCAUSA required 26 runs with 30 balls remaining. Could the impossible happen? We started to believe, we have a chance to win. Everyone including the South Australian held their breath. VCAUSA were 6/152 at the end of the 38th over. With seven balls to spare it happened—S. Pitts brought up the winning run VCAUSA 6/158. Pandemonium struck as the Victorians were all up as one to congratulate the two batsmen Richards and Pitts on a magnificent performance. We had just witnessed a record 7th wicket Crockett shield partnership (88 runs of 99 balls) as previously held by Victorians, M. Sheehan and I. McGregor (59 runs NO, 1999) and South Australians, D. Harper and M. Aworth (49 runs, 1995). The look on the South Australian faces was one of disbelief (how did we lose this one???). A three peat for the VCAUSA was completed with the overall score now VCAUSA 22, SACUSA 18 and one draw. This game would have to go down as one of the all time great Crockett Shield games. All the players would like to thank the umpires Trevor Finlayson and Bruce Stribley, the scorers Alan Britton and Neil Ricketts for the professionalism and dedication to the Crockett Shield event. Thanks also goes out to Damian Herft and Lynton Donisthorpe for the mountain of excellent photographs which provide a lot of memories. The VCAUSA Selection Committee was served well by the Chairman Tony Ventura, Alan McCarthy and John Richards. Also a big thank you to Rod McKinnon and all other members who attended training and supported the team to this successful Crockett Shield victory. The support of all members, family and friends that attended is greatly appreciated and is the reason why this event is such a success. At the Easter Saturday Presentation Dinner the following awards were presented: Ian McGregor Medal, Player of the Match—Craig Thomas Cronin Medals, umpires Trevor Finlayson (VCAUSA) and Bruce Stribley (SACUSA) Howard Medals, scorers Alan Britton (VCAUSA) and Neil Ricketts (SACUSA) VCAUSA awards: Graeme Bugge Batting Trophy—Stephen Pitts (37 runs NO (John Richards too modest to give the award to himself, although Stephen Pitts also deserved it and only one could win) Ian Stuart Bowling Trophy—Chris Doyle (7 overs, 1 maiden, 3/18) Ray Isherwood Fielding Trophy—Dale Ireland (Spectacular Catch) SACUSA awards: Gladstone Jones Batting Trophy—Craig Thomas (90 runs) Peter Weddell Bowling Trophy—Craig Thomas (8 overs, 2 maidens, 2/10) George McDonagh Fielding Trophy—Michael Williamson The Skull Award—Shane Roberts

VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 51 Annual Awards

2018–19 Winners The Robin Bailhache Commitment Award Phil Gillespie The Ray Isherwood Representative Umpire Award Shawn Craig The Jim Phillips 1st XI Umpiring Award Chris Grant The Dave Elder 2nd XI Umpiring Award Mick Nolan The Ron Wright 3rd XI Umpiring Award Lisa McCabe The Andy Barlow 4th XI Umpiring Award Jeff Diamond-Smith The Cameron Medal for Scorer of the Year Shane Herbert

Background to the Awards The seven Annual Awards not only recognise the outstanding performances by seven of our active umpire/scorer members, but also honour the names of celebrated predecessors. The major award, the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award, was first awarded in 1992–93 as the Norwich Umpiring Commitment Award. At a 1996 General Meeting, the following motion was passed: “That in the light of the distinguished service given to the VCAUA by Robin Bailhache, the Annual Commitment Award should be renamed the Robin Bailhache Umpiring Commitment Award.” In the 1999–2000 season, following the introduction of official VCA scorers to the Association, the conditions of the Award were changed so that both active umpires and scorers could be considered for the Association’s most prestigious award, which would in future be known as the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award. The criteria for award of the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award are that the member has made a significant contribution to the Association off the field; has performed very well on the field (or in the scorebox); and is committed to their own and their colleagues’ performance. Selection is made by a process of confidential consultation between the President of the Association and other executive officers. The Ray Isherwood Representative Umpire Award commenced in 2018–19 to recognise the best performing representative umpire in Victorian cricket. It is named in honour of former Australian Test umpire Ray Isherwood who umpired in Victoria from 1962 to 1987 and was a Life Member and Past President of the Association. The four Premier umpiring awards were established in 2000 and were named after four celebrated Victorian Test umpires of past years, viz. Jim Phillips, David Elder, Ron Wright and Andy Barlow, whose names had not been honoured in any other Association Award. During the 2005–06 season, the award criteria were modified to require the winning umpire to have officiated in at least half of the matches played in the grade for which each award is made. Selection is based on the umpires’ performance throughout the season as determined by the Cricket Victoria Umpire and Coach Education Manager. The scorers’ award was presented for the first time in 2001 and, for that year, was named the VCAUSA Scorers’ Award. It was the unanimous wish of the Association’s scorer members that their medal should be named after two of the most distinguished scorers in Victorian cricket history, viz. Jack Cameron snr. and Jack Cameron jnr. Selection is made by the scorer representatives on the Committee of Management, in consultation with Cricket Victoria.

52 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 The Robin Bailhache Commitment Award The Robin Bailhache Commitment Award is our Association’s most prestigious award and the worthy recipient for this year is Phil Gillespie. Phil joined the Cricket Victoria panel in 2009 and has been a member of the Association since that time, rising through the Premier grades standing in both men’s and women’s matches. He won the 4th XI Andy Barlow medal in his first season and prior to this season the 1st XI Jim Phillips medal twice. In 2011 Phil was selected to umpire in Auckland as part of the New Zealand exchange program and in 2014 he was elevated to the Cricket Australia National Umpire Panel and made his First Class debut. In 2018–19 Phil was the architect and main driver in the establishment of the Cricket Victoria/VCAUSA Scholarship for the Development of High Performance umpiring which has benefitted the Association by encouraging membership of new panel members. He also provided input to the Association to improve the recognition of representative umpires which has led to the establishment of the Ray Isherwood Perpetual Trophy. As a member of the National Umpiring Panel Phil has been a regular lecturer at Winter Classes, the pre-season Seminar in September and Training and Development nights. He has always been ready and willing to mentor and support his colleagues irrespective of their years on the panel or the grade in which they umpire. He has supported the Umpiring and Coach Education Manager of Cricket Victoria to develop and improve the umpiring panel. At Easter 2019 Phil made the welcoming speech to begin our biennial exchange with South Australia and he has been a regular attendee at our annual Presentation Dinner. The Committee of Management and members of the VCAUSA congratulate this year’s winner of the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award, Phil Gillespie.

70 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 R.M. (Bob) Crockett Shield

One of the feature events on the VCAUSA calendar is the biennial Easter exchange with our sister Association in South Australia, SACUSA. In 2012, Kristen Thomas was commisioned by SACUSA to research the early history of the exchange, resulting in a revision of our understanding of the origin of the exchange. Her findings were published in a leaflet unveiled during the Easter exchange in Adelaide in 2013 as follows: Let the good times roll—cricket friendships offset The Great Depression Why DID a cricket match between Victorian and South Australian cricket umpires begin? And when exactly did it occur? Until recently, accessible records indicated that 1936 was the inaugural year of competition. But modern technology has enabled research into historic newspapers that reveals plans for the interstate fixture were underway as early as 1930, and the actual first match was held in Carlton, Victoria in 1931. During the beginning of a significant worldwide economic depression this was a bold undertaking, but one which was inspired by a desire to promote goodwill and hope. The traditional game that ‘The Vics’ and ‘The Croweaters’ indulge in today was born of a need to remind people that fun is an essential ingredient of life—especially when life is looking challenging. As it turned out, the result of the first match was a diplomatically correct ‘draw’. As it was not a limited overs game—and it appears that SA declared at 8 for 125—when Victoria reached 7 for 111 at stumps, the game was declared a draw. SA’s Victor Selth (former State level wicketkeeper) was generously awarded a trophy by Victoria, for being the best performing visiting player. (Source: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/artitle/45758502). Ernest Ramsden was a Victorian founding player who had the pleasure of umpiring a Sheffield Shield AND a Vic vs West Indies match at the MCG just prior to the umpires’ game. Depression or not, lights were shining brightly for cricket umpires and their beloved game 82 years ago when our partnership began. The competition was suspended during World War II, The South Australian association was named the South but resumed in 1947, playing for the R.M.(Bob) Crockett Australian Cricket Umpires’ Association (SACUA), Shield; matches have been held every second year since maintaining this name even after scorers were admitted then. Easter exchanges are much more than simply a to membership in 2001. In 2010, however, it changed its cricket match, however. Members of both associations name to properly reflect its membership, becoming the and their families get together to make and renew South Australian Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association friendships; on each occasion there are numerous social (SACUSA). 76 VCAUSA Annual Report 2019 The Ian McGregor Medal

Following the 2003 Easter Visit, at which time Ian McGregor was known to be terminally ill (he died in August 2003), the committees of the two associations decided to strike a medal for the player of the match to be called the Ian McGregor Medal. One of the medals was presented to Ian and his family a short time before his death. Ian was an enthusiastic participant and key organiser of Easter events from 1989 to 2001.

The Keith C Butler Trophy

Following the 1999 Easter visit a combined meeting of the committees of the two associations decided to commence a new competition between the two associations, to be known as the Keith C Butler Trophy. Keith Butler was a SACUSA member who attended every Easter event from 1936* to 1997. *In view of the new discovery that the exchange actually commenced in 1931, it would be interesting to know whether Keith participated in the earlier exchange(s) Competition is in sport or activity and a format which enables and encourages participation of all members and families. The actual contest is determined for each visit by the host association.
